see this is part of the reason why there should be more physically disabled characters in pjo in general but the reason that Will being physically disabled would be such big deal is because he’s a healer. disabled people are extremely underrepresented in healthcare even though it’s so important for their voices to be heard. Will in canon is pretty ableist (because Rick is ableist), but imagine if he was physically disabled. imagine a Will who understands his patients because he’s in the same situation and leads reforms for accessibility because he’s dependent on it, too. imagine a Will who dreams of revolutionizing the medical field to make it easier for people like him to become doctors and nurses. imagine a Will who struggles with physical disability every day but is proud of who he is and wouldn’t change himself for the world.

Disabled Nico makes me so happy. Not that he's in pain, that makes me sad but like, idk. I wouldn't say I'm disabled, but I have chronic leg and back pain that doesn't ever seem to go away and the idea that my favorite character has the same thing and is managing it, even if terribly, gives me some sort of happiness??

Authors Note: I came out to my parents as trans recently and to say they didn't take it well is a understatement. So I handled it by writing about it. Which is why Will is trans. Some trigger warning for transphobic language!

Will comes out to his grandparents and it doesn't go well. Nico attempts to be supportive.

Nico stepped out from the shadows into the familiar gloom of Cabin 13, crossing to his bed, dropping heavily onto it. He stowed his sword along with his cane, flopping back to lay down. He groaned, dropping his arm across his eyes. He had promised to go see Will as soon as he got in, but he was so exhausted he needed to take a minute to just rest. Nico took a deep breath, holding it for ten seconds, releasing it slowly. He intentionally relaxed each of his muscles the way Will had taught him, feeling the tension and some pain bleed from his body into the mattress beneath him. The quiet of Cabin 13 was shattered by a loud pounding at the door. Nico groaned and lurched to his feet, grabbing his cane, crossing to the door and yanking it open, fully preparing a tirade at the poor soul on the other side of the door. What he wasn’t expecting was a very out of breath Austin Lake, who visibly relaxed even as he took a step away from the very no-longer-relaxed Nico.  

“ Nico, thank the gods your back” Austin exclaimed, slumping against the porch pillar. Nico’s brow furrowed.  

“ What’s going on?” He questioned, even as he glanced toward the end of the green where Cabin 7 sat. If Austin was this happy to see him, it had to have something to do with  

Will. Austin sighed, following Nico’s gaze. Nico leaned his weight on his cane.  

“ He told his grandparents.” Austin’s voice was even, but Nico could hear the emotion boiling under the surface. Nico winced. Will had been open about their relationship from the beginning and told everyone except his maternal grandparents. Nico didn't really understand how someone as kind and accepting as Naomi Solace could of been raised by people like her parents, but all the stories of Will’s grandparents had been of a stern, “old fashioned” southern couple, who hated any deemed other while proclaiming the love they claimed to hold dear. Will had been toying with the idea of telling them for at least a few months but always decided against it. If he had indeed told them, it clearly hadn't gone well.  

“Where is he?” Was all that Nico could think to say. Austin sighed, turning toward the lava wall.  

“ Kayla is trying to convince him to go to the cabin but he got back and went straight to the infirmary. He’s probably still there. There’s no one there tonight, he’s just unpacking the supplies that Argus brought last week.” Nico followed Austin slowly across the green, wishing he could move faster. Nico climbed the steps to the infirmary. He stepped into the dim infirmary, letting his eyes adjust.  

“ C’mon Will- this stuff can wait and there’s no one here who needs your attention. Let’s go back to the cabin and get some rest. “ Kayla’s voice was calm but she looked exhausted, one hand rested lightly on Will’s shoulder where he stood, emptying a box of bandages into the storage they used for excess bandages. Will’s face was impassive, eyes focused on the bandages in front of him. He gently shook Kayla’s hand off his arm.  

“I’m fine, Kayla. I’m just gonna stay here a bit longer. Don’t worry about me” Even Will’s voice, normally lilted was flat. Nico could hear the tears in his voice and frowned, taking a half step forward. Everything in him wanted to rush forward and hold Will but he didn’t want to spook Will- he wasn’t even sure if Will knew he was back yet.  

“Kayla” Austin called softly, catching Kayla’s attention yet Will’s focus remained steadfastly on his task. She glanced up and catching sight of muttered a soft “Thank the gods” walking over to give Nico a quick hug, following Austin out. At the sound of the door, Will turned to look at the door. He locked gazes with Nico, surprise flitting across his face. Will’s guarded expression crumbled, his lip trembling. Nico lurched forward as quickly as his crutch allowed him, as Will rushed forward at the same time. Will collided with Nico, hands fisting in the back of Nico’s jacket as Nico wrapped his free arm tightly around Will, pulling Will as tightly to his own body as physically possible. Will buried his face in Nico’s shoulder. Sobs shook Will’s shoulders as Nico soothed his free hand up and down Will’s back.   

“Hey, Will. I’m here, lovely. “Nico murmured into Will’s ear, kissing the shell of Will’s ear. Will sniffled, hands clinging to Nico.  

“Let’s sit, yeah? Want to go to my cabin?” Will shook his head against Nico’s shoulder, leather creaking underneath his head. 

“ Okay, let’s sit here. It’s okay- we don’t have to go anywhere. I got you baby” Nico slowly led Will to the nearest bed, awkwardly lowering himself to the mattress, still holding onto Will with one hand. As soon as he was seated, Nico dropped his cane to wrap Will fully in his arms. Will tightened his grip on Nico’s jacket, clinging to the smaller man like his life depended on it.  

“I’m here Will.” Nico soothed, running his hand up and down Will’s back, pulling Will onto his lap. Will whimpered, tucking himself into Nico’s neck, breath tickling over exposed skin.  Silence reined pver the two men, Will still crying, curled into Nico’s neck, Nico holding Will tightly, soothing a hand up and down the taller mans back. After what might have been minutes or might have been hours, Will broke the silence. 

“ They didn’t take it well” Will’s voice was thick with emotion, and Nico could feel Will’s hands shaking where they clung to his jacket.  

“I’m sorry love” Nico whispered into the blond curls. Will took a shuddering breath, turning his head to look at Nico out of the corner of his eye.  

“Wanna talk about it?” Nico asked gently, smoothing the curls with his free hand. Will sighed, closing his eyes. After a moment Will opened his eyes, sat up and looped his arms around Nico’s neck. Nico waited patiently, hand continuing to rub along Will’s back. Will sighed, leaning his forehead against Nico’s.    

“I was visiting my mom at one of her concerts- it happened to be in the same town that my grandparents live in. Mom told me it wouldn’t go well if I told them- not being negative, she was concerned about their reaction. I was just so tired of hearing my deadname from them and wanted to be able to talk openly about you and would rather tell them and handle the reaction than not tell them and never know how they’d react. So, I went to see them. It was kind of obvious I guess what with my transition, but I still sat them down and told them that I wasn’t who they were calling me, that it’s not my name anymore, my name is Will. UI know it’s a lot to process but I wanted to be able to bring my partner over to meet them and that I could be who I truly am- who I’ve always been. I wanted to tell them about my transition and all the things that happened with that, but I knew it was a lot to take in”  

Nico hummed softly, running a hand through Will’s curls  

“How’d they take it?” He questioned tugging gently on a curl. Will sighed again, playing with the collar of Nico’s shirt. 

“Grandpa didn’t say much- that's not surprising. He's normally pretty quiet- always has been. Grandma was...” Will hesitated, searching for words. “She was very vocal about it. She said they could accept me being gay but not me ‘mutilating’ my body, that I was always going to be a girl, and no matter what lies my father or anyone else fed me I was always going to be a girl. She also said, it was no wonder my father didn’t stick around, that if they had known that camp would ‘turn me trans’ they wouldn’t have let Mom send me there and wouldn’t have even let her have me, that I was better off dead than to be trans.” Nico inhaled sharply as a pit formed in his gut. Of all the things they could have said, Will’s grandmother went for the most hurtful things she could have said.  

“I’m sorry love. They are wrong, you know?” Nico murmured, pulling Will closer. His hand rested on Will’s hip, and he squeezed lightly, reassuring him with more than just words. Will smiled at Nico, though it was weak.  

“I know they’re wrong- I know I’m not better off dead, that nothing made me trans, even if I wasn’t a demigod or my father's son, I still would have been trans, right? But knowing that and hearing the things my grandma said and realizing she meant it- it's still hard. She’s still my family. She’s still someone who I wished accepted me, wished loved me enough to love me for who I am, not who she thought I was. I wish her opinion of me didn’t matter but it does. And I just wanted her to choose me over her religion for once in my life but I’m not worth that to her. She doesn’t want me, and I have to somehow learn to live with that. Learn to live with the fact that I’m not enough for her- that she would rather a dead kid than a trans kid. I’m no longer willing to pretend to be the person she thinks I am. I’ve spent enough time denying myself freedom and I’m not willing to deny myself any longer. If she can’t love me for me and would rather love a ghost- that's on her. It still hurts, and maybe it always will. But i can’t cut pieces of me off just so I fit someone else’s idea of who I am. She is who she is, and I am who I am and if that means losing her than I have to do that. At the end of the day, it’s her loss.”  

“Oh Will” Nico whispered, crushing his boyfriend to his chest. He pressed his lips to Will’s forehead, trying to convey without words how much Will meant to him, how brave he thought Will was.  

“I’m so proud of you, you know?” Nico continued, pulling back slightly to look Will in the eyes. His blue eyes were shot with red, betraying the calm exterior he was trying so hard to have. Nico smiled reassuringly at Will before continuing  

“You choose to see the best in others, you refuse to let others hate drag you down. I’ve never met anyone before who embodies sunshine so much- not even your siblings do so you can’t say it’s an Apollo thing. It’s a you thing, love. If light was a person, it would be you. I’m sorry she hurt you- and don’t get me wrong I’m angry but never at you. I’m angry for you. I’d love to go tell her exactly who she’s missing out on but I don’t think that is what you need right now. “Will chuckled, shaking his head.  

“No, not really. I just need you.” He squeezed his arms tighter around Nico’s neck “I just need this. And time” Nico smiled at him, sure that Will could see the love written on his face. Will leaned forward, and kissed Nico. When they separated, Will stood and stooped to grab Nico’s cane. He offered it and his hand to Nico who accepted them easily. “My cabin?” Nico guessed, as Will led them to the door.  

“Is that okay?” Will asked. “I know you just got home from wherever your dad had you going- do you need some time to rest?” Nico was shaking his head before Will finished his sentence. He pressed himself closer to Will’s side as Will shut the infirmary.  

“No- you need me and it’s my pleasure to be in your corner. Besides, there’s nothing saying we can’t rest together.” Will hummed softly, wrapping a arm around Nico’s waist as he led them to Cabin 13. Nico let go of Will to walk up the stairs, openeing the door and letting Will through before shutting the door behind him. As soon as he turned around, Will wrapped his arms around Nico, leaning down to kiss him again. Nico kissed back enthusiastically, leaning his weight against Will. When Will pulled back, smiling, Nico traced his cheek tenderly.  

“Cuddles?” Will asked, still smiling.  

“Yeah” Nico answered, letting him take the cane to put away. Will supported Nico’s weight easily, helping him to the bed toeing off their shoes and climbing onto the bed after Nico. Nico tugged lightly on Will’s arm, positioning them so Will’s head was on Nico’s chest. He ducked his head to kiss the top of Will’s head, settling himself back against the pillows.  

“Comfortable? “Will asked from his position on Nico’s chest.  

“Very” Nico whispered, feeling sleep pull at him as Will started humming. He allowed his eyes to slip closed.  

“Oh-” Nico opened his eyes as a thought occured to him. “Before I forget- I love you” Will giggled, lifting his head to look at Nico.  

“ I love you too. I am gonna have a nap though, so if you wake me up I will throw you into the canoe lake” Nico snorted, tightening his hold on Will.  

“Sounds good to me.” And allowing his eyes to close again, he drifted off to sleep, with his boyfriend in his arms.

You look like you’ve been…” If he was going to say “crying,” which he figured he probably was, Nico didn’t want to hear it. He grimaced, not really fond of Will’s younger siblings hearing about him showing any kind of vulnerability. Will noticed the face he made and didn’t add anything else. “Want me to go check on you? Maybe it’s… Fever?” Apollo children were terrible at lying, but Nico found it cute, at least on Will. “Please, come.” He’d placed the call with the idea of asking him to go with him without sounding desperate, but he couldn’t really help the “please” escaping him.

nico definitely hits people with his cane. or at least he vaguely threatens, too. occasionally, one of the apollo kids will crack a joke at him (probably austin), and nico will reach over and hit the back of their knees with a cane so their leg buckles. nobody ever believes them.

a rant about adults having 3+ copies of middle grade books.

probably an unpopular opinion but i don’t like it when adults have 3+ (most i’ve seen is four) copies of tsats just bc they can. like i get it if your copy gets messed up so you get a new one, or if you buy a lot for a giveaway, or if you have a backup copy, but FOUR COPIES is excessive. especially if you’re not even the target audience, bc that takes away from the target audience (coming from someone apart of the target audience.) tsats is a middle grade book. a book for middle schoolers. here’s my unrealistic but easy to understand hypothetical: say when tsats was released they had 100,000 copies ready to be sold, and about 10,000 adults each got four copies, for their own use/benefit. that means there’s 30,000 middle schoolers that are gonna have to wait for more books to be printed just so they can scrap up 20 dollars (my copy was 15 but in canada its like 30 so yeah) and buy the book. i got the very last copy walmart had in their book section. bc so many people were preordering so many copies that the preorder went from 15 dollars to 30 dollars in the US. tsats is a book about silly little teenagers FOR silly little teenagers. “oh but i grew up on pjo, i should get to read the book too!!” ok. you don’t need 4 copies to read the book. you really don’t even need 1 copy. e-books are a thing. and if you are an adult that got tsats, cool. good for you! but please don’t get more than two copies unless you already had a copy or two and another was gifted to you. the queer teens that are reading this book may need the representation to keep them going. so please don’t take away from us. also this is all meant to be respectful as possible. and this goes for all books. if you’re not the target audience, please don’t take away from the target audience. that would be most appreciated. :)
