Ophelia didn’t put it on. The piece of clothing felt too heavy in her arms. She asked quietly, “Just how long do you think I’m going to stay hiding away?”

“As long as I say so,” Li Fei said. Ophelia glanced up, her stare so severe, her mother almost seemed taken aback by it.

“Was it even Orpheus’ idea to send me off in the first place?”

The air between them turned rank. Li Fei’s face hardened. “Get on the carriage, Ophelia.” She spun to leave and Ophelia couldn’t explain why, but she felt herself take a step towards her mother, the string of words, uncharacteristically desperate and surprisingly raw, making it way out of her. “Aren’t you even going to say goodbye?” she demanded.

Li Fei didn’t reply. She didn’t even bother to look back. She just walked until she disappeared from view, her golden train trailing behind her.

Ophelia hadn’t cried because of her mother for many years now, but the sudden burn at the back of her throat told her she was almost going to. She couldn’t stand to look at the cloak, now limp in her arms, much less to drape it over her shoulders. It felt like a blanket of iron.

this is later than I intended, because work, but as promised, chapter one of my queer historical fiction.

Not two weeks past when Rhett Price sends his cattle out to pasture, he and his boys find a stranger collapsed out along the fence north of the house.

"Gonna catch cold," Rhett says, standing over the man’s body. "Best bring him in."

"You don't know what he's doing here, sir. Might be a poacher. A thief," Gabriel says, turning his gaze to Cooper. Cooper’d dig through the man’s pockets, maybe find some reason he's there, but the poor kid looks like he's lucky to have the clothes on his back. He's a right mess. Covered in mud and dust, in cattail fur and little more than rags.

Orpheus scowled. “You have no right to speak, thief.” He spat out the last word like poison. The Morningstar had hit a sore spot, although it wasn’t hard – Orpheus had many. He gestured to the palace guard. “What did he steal?”

“Anything on the bodies. He went through many pockets, ransacked rooms…” She showed him a burlap sack hefty with loot. Ophelia counted watches, rings, silver emblems and a ruby-encrusted dagger that seemed awfully familiar. A swell of panic seized Ophelia up and she touched her thigh, where her weapon was supposed to be strapped to.

“The dagger!” Ophelia exclaimed, startling all three of them. She shouldered her way to the palace guard and swooped to pick up the golden knife. Its handle was still warm as if someone had just used it. Ophelia’s breath shuddered in relief.

The look on the Morningstar’s face shifted when Ophelia came into view. She didn’t realize how close she was standing to him until she looked up to realize she could see a small healed up scar across his jaw. His eyes lit up slyly.

“It’s beautiful,” the Morningstar said. “You have a good eye, Princess.”

Immediately, the masked man was dragged away from Ophelia’s reach, pushed roughly to the other side by Orpheus’ strong arms. He barked orders to throw the Morningstar into the dungeon until they decide what to do with him
