Martha Wells publishing a short story from Dr. Gurathin’s POV—it could be so interesting, we don’t know what he’s up to in the Network Effect/System Collapse timeframe and seeing things from an augmented human’s (especially THIS augmented human) view point could be fascinating!

uh hi. i wanted to illustrate one of the introductary scenes for SecUnit's character, since that would go along well with this being kind of my first post here. i... think that makes some sense. i promise more Murderbot diaries fanart after this (calling it content feels icky)). (did I start overusing brackets becouse of these books? possibly).

and i hope i captured SecUnit freaking out while trying to keep its composure at the same time well. as weird as it sounds, i like seeing depictions of it being nervous, becouse this side of it is what got me to relate to it so much in the first place (besides the heavily implied neurodivergence. though i guess the two go hand in hand). examples: in the second panel of the second page i tried showing how Gurathin's words affected it by making the speech bubbles visually "choke" (?) it, though it kept its face straight. oh, and i made it look much shorter than it actually is to mirror the way it is feeling!! figuring out details like that was pretty fun

(i'm sorry for any inconsistencies and the messy colouring and linework, i have ADHD and i get incredibly bored when i spend time trying to make everything "perfect" and looking the same in each panel... )

Discord convo shenanigans. I think Ratthi is overly enthusiastic about cats and always scares them away, MB ignores fauna in general unless it's eating humans so cats LOVE it and it doesn't get why. Deep breath guys, this is a two page comic so it's gonna be a long image id, oof.

Abandoned Unit by Skits (https://archiveofourown.org/works/37948960) The Murderbot Diaries. Murderbot is stranded on the survey planet after the humans evacuated. Sometime later, another ship crashes onto the planet, with another group of humans called PreservationAux on board. Murderbot takes it upon itself to protect these humans, especially from it’s damaged appearance. It doesn’t want to frighten them, after all. The humans deciding to return the favor and help Murderbot, even when it’s asking them to terminate it is very heartwarming. I was left wanting more to see how the humans helped Murderbot get repaired and get off the planet.

I LOVE THIS IDEA, and this portion of the summary really sells it in IMHO:

THAT IS WHAT WE'RE HERE FOR. I LOVE IT WHEN THINGS GO WRONG. THAT'S WHERE THE PLOT THICKENS. hehe. This seems like another wonderful recommendation. Thanks so much for sending it in!

On the 29th of March 2023 I published what was going to be a oneshot, a fun little chapter featuring Murderbot and ART and Gurathin and a dastardly plot with a Combat SecUnit designed to look just like MB…that was then…today chapter 27 of what is now the second longest Murderbot Diaries fanfic on AO3 is published

It’s now a teamwork with @rj-abacura @theash0 @gamebird @opalescent-potato @hopedtheredbestars and more who have worked on it along the way—and you’re all amazing ❤️❤️❤️

I don't know what it says about allos, but it sure as shit says something that they'd rather ship Murderbot (aroace and hates the idea of being in any kind of relationship, including platonic) with Dr. Gurathin, who spent the entire first book and a lot of the fourth one being a genuine asshole to it, over Dr. Ratthi, who's always been genuinely friendly and supportive. Dr. Ratthi's also been confirmed to be mspec. We have no fucking clue if Dr. Gurathin's not even aroace himself.

Like, these people aren't JUST being aroacemisic by shipping Murderbot, they're going out of their way to ship it with the one recurring human character who's spent most of his existence treating Murderbot like shit and purposefully antagonizing it.

Like. They insist Murderbot isn't actually aroace or that they're shipping it queerplatonically (ignoring the fact that it is BLATANTLY also not okay with queerplatonic relationships either, as everyone who fucking read the fifth book knows full well), because they're aroacemisics...but then they can't even fucking do the bare minimum of shipping Murderbot with someone who hasn't treated it like shit????

Like motherfuckers, if you're going to be an aroacemisic, and insist upon shipping Murderbot with someone, Ratthi's right fucking there. But most of the people who ship Murderbot with Dr. Gurathin fucking make Dr. Gurathin white, while Ratthi's obviously not, so I guess we fucking know why they picked the one human who's actively an asshole to Murderbot over any of the other characters it could be shipped with with an semblance of morals, if not a fucking lack of amisia. (And no, you literally cannot ship Murderbot without being an aroacemisia. Murderbot does not want a romantic, sexual, or platonic relationship with anyone, no, not even ART you stupid fuckers)

Like, no, you people are not hiding your racism at all. There's a very clear fucking reason everyone shipping Murderbot with Dr. Gurathin decided Dr. Gurathin's white, and almost everyone fucking makes Murderbot white too. It's not fucking subtle, especially when Dr. Ratthi is right fucking there, supportive and friendly with Murderbot the whole fucking time, confirmed to be mspec (Dr. Gurathin could literally be aroace considering all other human characters have established current relationships or past ones but there's no mention of Dr. Gurathin ever dating anyone!)

If you ship Murderbot with anyone you're literally already automatically aroacemisia. If you decide to ship it with the one human asshole instead of anyone else, you're an asshole. If you make Murderbot and whoever you're shipping it with white, you're fucking racist. And if you ship it with Dr. Mensah you're just beyond fucking hope. This series has stated over and fucking over again "do not ship slaves with their owners" but some of you fucking idiots go "oh I wonder who that's for!!!"

And this isn't even getting into the fucking ableism of all you fucking assholes erasing the fact that Murderbot's touch averse and hates physical contact, even though that's one of the things this series does right by always respecting -.-

Poking sensation in the Feed (tmbd)

It is interesting that Murderbot seems to get awareness of "poking" in the feed as something akin to physical sensations.

All Systems Red

Dr. Gurathin, the least talkative one, was an augmented human and had his own implanted interface. I could feel him poking around in the data, while the others, using the touch interfaces, were just distant ghosts. I had a lot more processing power than he did, though.

Artificial Condition

It said, You’re a rogue SecUnit, a bot/human construct, with a scrambled governor module. It poked me through the feed and I flinched. It said, Do not attempt to hack my systems, and for .00001 of a second it dropped its wall.

ART poked me hard enough to make me twitch. I snapped out of it and ran my recording back a little to catch up on what was happening.

ART poked me. I see it, I told it. The search had turned up a series of notices posted around the right timeframe.

Network Effect

The SecSystem poked me in response and I told it everything was fine, and it went back to happily interfacing with me again.

System Collapse

“So we land on flat ground somewhere, the area looks stable,” Tarik said. He’s not stupid. I think he was trying to annoy ART-drone, but I poked Ratthi on our private feed connection with a video file.

Of course, ART-drone said. It poked me in the threat assessment module. And what is the probability of that, again, exactly?

My impression (without getting different POV) is that constructs like Murderbot and bots like ART perceive poking in the feed as something similar to physical poking. Instantaneous and attention-catching. Humans perceive them more like alert notification. (probably stronger poke than the Facebook poke function...)

Ratthi responds to Murderbot's poke because it was a video file, set to autoplay.

Augmented humans with extra feed interface like Gurathin and Iris (?) may be more sensitive to pokes, but not sure if they flinch/twitch in response.

ART can poke Murderbot in specific place, like threat assessment module. Maybe it's a super AI thing, but I suspect it is because ART is given access to all the assessment modules (e.g., threat assessment module, performance reliability assessment module) during this mission. Again sounds pretty intimate.
