The thing that kills me about the Oct 11th entry with Mina insisting that should she turn into a vampire, she wants the others to kill her, is not just that Jonathan does not promise to do that, but that the way we hear Seward describe the scene—Quincy promising first, Jonathan brokenly asking if he has to and hesitating, the way we know about Jonathan’s private holy vow to Mina in his journal—is that I wonder if Jonathan is drawing his line in the sand.

He’s already made up his mind about what he will do if Mina turns, and now with Mina making the suitor squad promise to kill her, I wonder if now his fear and intention has subtly shifted.

You can almost hear it in that scene as Seward is describing Jonathan’s body language, but as soon as Quincy steps up to make his vow, I can almost sense the shift radiating off Jonathan.

He now has to contend with not only Dracula, but if it comes down to it, also against everyone else there, because he cannot allow Mina to come to harm, by any hand, especially not his own.

I think he was re-evaluating his priorities and loyalties. Yes, he is friends with all these people and loves them and wants them to work together to defeat Dracula and save Mina, but now he has resolved to the fact that there is a possibility of a last stand of “us” (him and Mina) vs. “them” (suitor squad), even if it’s not what Mina wants, he would do anything to keep her safe.

And if you follow the subtext that Jonathan was bit too, he knows he’s on limited time as well at this point, if he even remembers being bit, but regardless would let Mina turn him if he didn’t remember. He knows killing her would not save him like she thinks it would, besides the fact that doing so would destroy him. He would rather be rest assured in the damnation of his own soul than have it utterly destroyed in the act of ending Mina’s life. I don’t think he could go on, and I think he would find it useless regardless, because he would rather die than kill Mina.

And he would rather harm everyone else than let anymore harm come to Mina, even if that means he has to cut down those nearest to him if it means saving her.

When he promised to himself to let himself become undead with her, he’s not only damning himself and Mina, but the whole of London and beyond. And if he’s willing to let the world burn for Mina, I’m willing to bet he’d let his friends burn too.

He now has an ulterior motive and while everyone else will be keeping a close eye on Mina, he will be keeping a close eye on everyone else, because he can no longer trust them not to follow through on their promise to her.

He doesn’t promise.

He won’t kill her.

And you’ll have to go through him if you want to try.

Mina's last will and testament, her wish, being picked up on first by Quincey just like that! ... He knew she was asking him and everyone else to be strong, and set her free by their hand should they not defeat Dracula. Even if they do defeat the Count, there's no guarantee she'd be her old self again.

Jonathan... Poor, sweet, Jonathan. He only wants his wife to be happy and okay again; even if it means doing the unthinkable. Everyone thinks that he'd do as Mina wishes, but I know that he'd join her in her un-death before he let any of them take what life she had left. After all, without Mina his life doesn't matter to him. She was his reason for surviving the castle and Weird sisters, his drive to make it home— to her! She is his love, his life, his everything. How can you expect someone to go on after that?

There is no hesitation, no fear, now. They must— they will defeat Dracula.

I admit, though, that the whole "Brave Men killing their wives to keep them from Falling Into the Hands of The Enemy" stuff made me cringe in a significantly higher than zero way. But aside from that it was an oh so marvellous scene.

Want to (re)read Animorphs?

Have you seen posts about the series by K A Applegate around tumblr and thought “What happens in these books?!” Are you like me and read them all as a kid but want to reread now? Maybe you just read them last month and still have the brainworms from them (heh). Maybe you want to be unmarketable by diving into a kids’ series from the 90s for the next year or just want a long-term alternative to doomscrolling?

Whatever your reason, do you want to make it a book club in the spirit of Dracula Daily?

So it looks like the poll suggests a one-book-a-week read-a-long, so it will take over a year to complete. Don’t let that intimidate you. You can always pick up at any time – either starting with an earlier book later into the year or by picking up with the book of the week as the Animorphs series was made to be largely self-contained in the individual books.

As previously stated, I’m not emailing out the bits and pieces like Dracula Daily. I don’t want to get in a fight with Scholastic and for no particular reason the year 2025 seems like an excellent year to support libraries. If your library or library app doesn’t have the ebooks or audiobooks apparently there are also PDFs of the entire series floating around on the internet with the authors’ blessing. Who knows, maybe you’re lucky enough to be in a position to have the physical copies.

Yeah. There are a lot of books. At one per week it will take over a year, but the books themselves are very short. If you’re unfamiliar with the series you might be confused by the addition of Megamorphs and Chronicles books meant to be read between the main 54. No worries, I’ve made a schedule.

I decided (admittedly quite arbitrarily) to start the first week of March to try to give a buffer between the idea and the start date for interest to spread before the first book. The idea is to finish each week’s book by Saturday but there’s no pressure if you fall behind or skip a book or join late. I can’t guarantee you’ll avoid spoilers, but I’m hoping people tag with the number or title of the book or some such method to discuss them. Idk, I’ve never done something like this before.

Also feel free to correct me on where to place the Megamorphs/Chronicles in relation to the regularly numbered books.

Reading BlueCatWriter's Dracula along with Dracula Daily

Ok so I've been meaning to read all of @bluecatwriter 's wonderful Dracula hc fics in order for a long time but I never have time to get with it so I decided to read it along with Dracula Daily this year.

If anyone else wants to do the same, here are the dates (or aproximante dates*) for each fic. (idk if someone has done this already but oh well) (BlueCat if you read this feel free to correct me if i got any date wrong)

*(Since there's 2 pre-canon fics and 2 days of may before dd, i'm setting those fics on those dates. Dates of undated fics are also adjusted to not overlap with date of other fics)

*(The order during the varna stay is a bit wacky since the book gets pretty vague for 2 weeks there but I tried to adjust it as well as possible.)
