On the topic of mergeswap AUs, most of the ninja could be shuffled around to different Merge scenarios with equally compelling results, but I maintain that by far the most *interesting* swap would be Lloyd-Zane. That is to say, Lloyd gets put in the coma pod while Zane is left alone in the monastery.
Out of all the post-Merge scenarios, I think Lloyd would most severely be fucked up by completely sleeping through it - he wakes up to find that not only is the world different, but his friends have spent *years* struggling to survive without his help. He's supposed to be their leader, their guide, the chosen savior of prophecy. It's his job to look out for them, isn't it? But he wasn't there. The world fell apart, his team is in shambles, and everyone has suffered innumerable traumas as a result...and he wasn't there for any of it. Knowing Lloyd, the self-imposed guilt would absolutely eat him alive. Also, once again he is chronologically displaced - before it was the age of his mind and body being mismatched, and now he is once again missing several years of his life.
(Also I think it's funny if we put Lloyd in Zane's pod specifically, especially if he's still the Conduit. Because that means he woke up, immediately jumped into the fight against Imperium, and then like 10 minutes later volunteered to take on life-changing god powers from some random talking dragon. All without any context for anything that is going on whatsoever.)
As for Zane...god, where do I even start.
So, putting Zane in the monastery is fascinating for a number of reasons.
Out of everyone on the team, the ones who consistently cope with isolation the worst are Cole and Zane. That's not to say the others enjoy it, per se, but they're all at least able to lock in and get shit done as needed, trauma be damned. But Cole is very community-oriented and comes a bit unglued in the absence of a community to rely on (DotD, s10), and Zane...oh boy.
Zane is usually the one to die, so he is rarely put in a position of grieving the others. His only instances of mourning the absenceof a loved one are:
His father, which happened off-screen so we don't know how he handled that initially (he seems to be okay in s3, but knowing Zane he probably just repressed the feeling and moved on)
Nya in Seabound, which he was so ill-equipped to deal with that he turned off his emotions entirely
Pixal in DR, where he was so unable to handle her absence that he straight up stapled a photo of her to a broom and started talking to it. Also with Kai getting lost in superhell, which we don't really see him grieving over but also we don't see much of that from anyone so uhhh I'm choosing to ignore that for now.
Picture it. Zane, alone in the monastery, with none of his friends around and no way of knowing what happened to them. All he can do is sit and hold vigil in the hopes that they will eventually come back (something something Echo Zane lighthouse parallels). I'm not saying Zane would start taping his friends' photos to random appliances by the end of week 1 and cry over his tenth ice sculpture of Pix by week 2, but uhhhh....actually no that's exactly what I'm saying. Provided he doesn't miraculously find a way to get himself killed while chilling in the monastery, I give him like 6 months before his sanity completely unravels.
Another reason for swapping Zane into Lloyd's spot is that whoever is in the monastery at the start of DR also gets to be the mentor to the new ninja. And that puts Zane in a *very* interesting position.
Zane is, on both a meta and narrative level, a support character. He's your medic, your backup, your HQ, and he can even be your damsel in distress. He's not really a leader by nature, and it is rare for him to take charge or assume a position of authority unless the situation demands it of him. He's generally content to sit back and let everyone else take charge - he let Cole take the lead during the prison break in s4, he's one of the only ones not to express pushback when Lloyd officially becomes the leader, etc.
It's actually a bit odd how rare it is for him to lead, bc it feels like everyone else has way more instances of flexing their leadership skills. Off the top of my head, i can think of exactly three occasions where Zane assumes a position of authority:
For about 10 mins in s5, which ends in him glitching out and talking backwards
In s14 when he became Captain Zane, but that was mostly for comedic effect, and authority goes back to Lloyd and Nya once the situation actually gets serious
In s11 when he became Ice Emperor, but he had to be magically corrupted, mind-wiped, AND gaslit in order for that to even happen.
(You could argue he took charge during the Snake Jaguar incident, but he didn’t take charge of the whole team and also it didn't end well.)
All this to say, Zane doesn't have a positive track record with being in charge. Probably even worse, now that he has all that Ice Emperor baggage to deal with.
So what do you do with a character like that? Naturally, you give him a gaggle of wide-eyed children to look after and tell him to teach them how to be ninja. Lloyd was already hesitant to be their master in canon, but Zane would be even worse.
Furthermore, Zane, uh...doesn't really have many friends outside of the ninja (aside from his falcon, who hasnt existed in the show for years). Cole has the Upply and the Finders, Nya is close to Ronin and became good friends with Bentho, Kai has Skylor and Wyldfyre, Lloyd had the resistance and Akita and now the next-gen kids, Jay started an entire cult in Prime Empire and also seems to be on good terms with Unagami, and even Wu is close to Faith...but who does Zane have outside of the team? Vex, maybe? Possibly Borg, even though that relationship isn't explored onscreen? Sally, who gets one whole episode spotlighting her and Zane before vanishing into obscurity?
This even continues in DR, too. Theres a new cast of characters to befriend and connect with, many of whom share a lot in common with Zane, but he doesn't really interact at length with anyone but his old friends and Frohickey.
True, a lot of that can be blamed on Zane's gradual narrative dehumanization depriving him of meaningful personal connections, but in-universe you could also attribute that to his self worth. Zane is so wrapped up in his belief that he exists to serve and protect, and he is so strongly devoted to the ninja that he can be a bit one-track-minded about it. He loves his family so much that he doesn't have time to care for anyone else in the same way. They are his world, his everything, his life's purpose...without them, he is nothing. Can you say "codependent"?
But now, he's alone in the monastery. He doesn't know if his friends are alive. All he can do is sit and pray and hope they come back to him. And after years of waiting, he crosses paths not with his family, but with two new kids. They want him to teach them to be ninja. But Zane is too afraid - afraid of leaving his post, afraid that being in charge will bring out his inner Ice Emperor...afraid of betraying his family by finding a new one.
He does agree to help them in the end, if only because he exists to protect and they need protection. But the whole time, he is afraid, and anxious, and painfully unsure of himself. But just as he teaches them how to be strong, how to fight, how to be brave and kind and selfless...they teach him how to believe in himself. How to reclaim his sense of identity. How to stand on his own without his friends, and how to make new ones. How to live for his loved ones, rather than dying for them.
(And yeah, okay, a small part of it this is definitely spite for the way he's been unilaterally snubbed by DR canon. I won't deny that)
Personally, if I were to write a mergeswap AU that's probably the direction I'd take. But then again, I might just be on some next-level copium and desperately trying to make Zane actually relevant to DR in some meager way
#there are two things preventing me from buckling down and writing the zane-centric mergeswap au in my drafts#1) im currently doing a full series rewatch and im still on ToE#2) maybe i just dont know where to look but it often feels like zane is the least popular character in the fanfic space#and everyone loves dad lloyd. idk if itd go over well to hand that story off to zane instead#ninjago#ninjago dragons rising#dragons rising#ninjago zane#zane julien#mergeswap au#destiny post

I love one piece, and I love creating stories and "what ifs" and finally I am going to share one of my favorite AUs I made for One Piece.
This is an extremely Marco centric OP au. Now I created a more cannon complient post of Marco's backstory.
But This is gonna be its own whole thing and I have a lot for it, under the cut. NOTE: This is both a Naruto x One Piece AU (sorta not really, it's complicated) and involves an OC of mine heavily.
This first post is gonna mostly be about the OCs role in the AU
At the end of the 4th Shinobi War the final battle features a smaller force against the being known as Kaguya ((not an alien)), among these shinobi is one Kaida Uzumaki.
((Lots to say about her but ultimately she is Naruto's twin and instead of Minato she held the yang half of Kurama until Naruto lost the yin half and she had her father's edo-tensei help her remove the yang half to give to Naruto.))
During this battle while Kaguya keeps ripping open gates/holes into various dimensions, realities, and times. Kaida and Naruto almost get trapped in one. In order to make sure Naruto isn't trapped Kaida basically makes the sacrifice play and ends up on the wrong side of a closed portal, trapped and alone.
Months later she finds out she is pregnant, this immediately changes any plans she made before - most because not only does she have to earn enough for both her and a baby but with a baby she will not be able to truly focus the time and energy necessary to find a way home. So she does what she is best at, being a shinobi - or in this new world an assassin.
Or she thinks its a new world, but she can still hear the song of Uzushio. And the more she looks at the hidden secrets, and the forgotten ruins the more she realizes that she didn't get sent to a new world but a new time, far far into the future (at least 7-800 years by her estimations). Her home and people forgotten.
Kaida both makes a name for herself as a masked assassin and by her 18th birthday becomes a mother. ((the first battle of the war starts on their 17th birthday but ends in December)) She gives birth to son, with her blue eyes and her father’s blonde hair – she has no idea what to name him until one of the people she translates an old saying from before the time of the villages and names him for it, Iwoar mokaru-thu heaki, Sui-theisan hakai corera... – mokaru, she names her son Marco.
((War forges blades, Peace breaks them; but a blade Forged in Peace will keep its purpose true.))
Eating his fruit at the age of 4 she finds there is much she has to change in his training, but Marco lives in the care of his mother, learning of her world and his heritage, training under her, until he is 13 years old. When she is killed Marco is left alone hunting to retrieve the only thing left, the family sword she reclaimed, along this hunt he meets an older pirate who insists he should not be alone, and both helps him and takes him in – a man by the name of Edward Newgate.

hi hi hi!! first of all, i'm so fascinated with how your mind works. seeing your theories, metas, and explanations actually inspired me to read the books (even if they're off of this slightly dodgy website lol). i've read some of your thoughts on harry's love interests / possible li's for him (the theo posts too), and i wondered what sort of love interest would be fitting for him if they were a girl. would they be like luna or any other existing character, how would they meet (ideally), what house or personality traits, etc.
Thank you!! 💛
Holy shit, it's insane you enjoyed my writing so much even without reading the books and that I got you to read the HP books but please be careful not to download malware on your PC. Stay safe out there.
Honestly, I can see a lot of different types of characters working as a love interest for Harry, but there are some common denominators for characters I think would work with him better. That being said, shipping is very subjective, and I think any character could be written in a compelling romance with any character by a talented enough writer, so these are mostly my preferences for Harry's dynamics in a romance with how I see his character.
Someone like Luna definitely could work. I like their dynamic and under the right circumstances, I think it could work. She's blunt, and straightforward in a way Harry respects, she can call out his bullshit and isn't scared of being herself. Harry's also open-minded enough to let Luna believe whatever she wants and would probably not mind a Sweaden vacation even if he doesn't believe they'd actually find a Crumple-Horned Snorkack.
Personally, I was always under the impression that if Harry and Susan Bones actually talked they would've gotten along really well due to Susan's, like, 3 lines:
“Not with the dragon, you didn’t,” said Michael Corner at once. “That was a seriously cool bit of flying. . . .” “Yeah, well —” said Harry, feeling it would be churlish to disagree. “And nobody helped you get rid of those dementors this summer,” said Susan Bones.
(OotP, Ch16)
She clearly sees Hary's accomplishments for what they are and calls out his unfounded self-doubts (Harry needs someone who can do that without making him feel stupid).
Hogwarts students, who now found themselves the unwilling objects of a gruesome sort of reflected fame as they walked the corridors: Susan Bones, who had an uncle, aunt, and cousins who had all died at the hands of one of the ten, said miserably during Herbology that she now had a good idea what it felt like to be Harry. “And I don’t know how you stand it, it’s horrible,” she said bluntly, dumping far too much dragon manure on her tray of Screechsnap seedlings, causing them to wriggle and squeak in discomfort.
(OotP, Ch25)
She's straightforward and chill with a few of her own demons and she dislikes public attention as much as Harry. Even if Susan had ways less time with Harry, she understands he doesn't like the attention. She asks "how you stand it?" she thinks he must hate it as much as she does. I just find it interesting a random Hufflepuff girl who has 2 lines knows and understands Harry better than his love interest who thinks he likes getting attention and going after Voldemort.
Basically, a blunt, chill Hufflepuff that treats him like just Harry and not the Boy-Who-Lived would work too, is what I'm saying. Like a younger Tonks-like character who's a bit more serious and responsible (which is how I imagine Susan, except, less punk) could work with Harry. (though Harry thinks anyone who looks a little punk looks cool... He thinks Tonks is cool, and Kingsly and Bill are instantly cool in Harry's opinion for having an earring, so maybe give him a punk girlfriend. I think he'd be into it)
A Gryffindor girl who likes Quidditch (like Ginny) could've worked too. My problem with Ginny is that JKR tried to make her too perfect in the later books. Like, a Gryffindor girl who's confident and has a sense of humor could've been a good match for Harry. Just give her some actual insecurities and the willingness to be emotionally vulnerable with Harry and without Ginny's obsession so she'd see Harry as Harry and not as the Boy-Who-Lived — that could've worked. Like, Ginny as a concept could've worked if the character and her romance with Harry were written better. As she is in the books, I don't think it works though, I'd change the character's personality/attitude if I wanted to write her with Harry, so I don't feel like I could really call her "Ginny" you know?
A Ravenclaw like Cho who doesn't expect Harry to be another Cedric and is just more chill and not actively grieving could've worked. Like, as I mentioned Luna (who's a Ravenclaw) could work with Harry, but a sporty, chill, Ravenclaw could've also worked. She just needed to know who Harry is and date him for him and not as a Cedric replacement. Also, I just, don't think Harry would be interested in a girl who's into dragging him to Madam Paddifoots, but, like, a Ravenclaw who plays Quidditch and is, like, idk, obsessed with alchemy and has a bit of a mad scientist vibe going on, could work with Harry. I think his love interest should have interests of her own, basically. I think it adds flavor.
A cunning and intelligent Slytherin girl who isn't Pansy Parkinson (a la Daphne Greengrass or Tracy Davis) could work as well, depending on how you characterize her.
Basically, to ship Harry with a girl, of any house, I'd be looking for a lot of the same traits I look for in guys I ship Harry with:
Treat Harry as Harry and not as the Boy Who Lived — the reason doesn't matter but he/she has to see Harry as his own person and not his scar or fame and understand he hates the attention.
Intelligence — because Harry's actually really smart and he needs someone who could not only keep up with him but also correct and argue with him when the situation calls for it.
Self-confidence but also some insecurities — they need to have a spine to stand their ground and call Harry on his bullshit and his own low self-esteem but they should have their own issues and self-perception problems. I like it when things are fair and a ship helps each other grow together. Also, I don't think Harry would date someone truly arrogant. Arrogant to hide insecurities — that I think could work though under the right conditions.
Wit and humor — Harry is a sarcastic, sassy little shit with a slightly dark sense of humor, I think he needs a partner who can match his sense of humor and not get offended if he makes a comment about wanting to torture Snape.
Chill — Harry is a little emotionally inept, he would probably not manage well with a very emotional partner that requires a lot of attention (like Cho). Don't get me wrong, Harry would care and do his best, and pay attention when needed, but the guy doesn't really know how to deal with crying people. So, his partner should be someone who's fine with Harry's sort of comfort methods. (Some people don't want to talk about it when they're upset, they just want someone to listen to them vent a bit. Which, I think Harry would be great at. And vice versa. Harry, when upset, often just wants someone to be next to him quietly, but he doesn't want to talk about it sometimes). Basically, they need to have matching comfort styles so they could actually communicate when upset.
Chill (p2) — Harry's sort of anger requires someone who'd be able to remain cool once Harry reaches his threshold in year 5 wouldn't get quickly offended, but instead calmly put Harry in his place. Basically, they need to have more emotional intelligence than Harry because someone needs to know how to do emotions in the relationship. (In Ronmione's case, Ron is the more emotionally intelligent one, contrary to what Hermione likes to think. In Hinny's case, neither of them knows how to do emotions somehow, which adds to why they never appealed to me, I think. In Tommary, which I used to read, Harry is the emotionally intelligent one in the relationship, which is why this pairing is only realistic to me when it's a disastrous mess)
Knows to be both blunt and subtle depending on the situation — Harry needs someone to match him, as Harry can be a sneaky Slytherin sometimes, but sometimes, the situations in his life would require his partner to be brave and blunt. I think, regardless of house, his partner should be able to do both.
The capacity to be quiet — Harry is a quiet person overall and I think he'd work better with a partner who can just let him be quiet and not force him to engage in conversation. Ron and Hermione, for example, love bantering and bickering, but Harry finds their sort of bickering infuriating, so, yeah. Like, he can work with a partner who talks more than him, but they need to not always need to talk, yk?
At least a little anti-authority (or a lot) — I don't think Harry could date someone who's perfectly by-the-book and loves the rules and authority. Most of his clashes with Hermione come from a place of her trusting certain authority while Harry doesn't really trust any authority. I think he'd get frustrated dating someone who's too pro-authority (why he and Cho wouldn't have lasted even without Cedric's ghost hanging over them).
Magically talented — Harry's magic is insane, he doesn't need a partner that's on his level, but someone who is capable and skilled enough to hold their own is necessary with how dangerous Harry's life is and for him to be able to treat them seriously.
Brave — there are different kinds and levels of bravery, but at the end of the day, I don't think Harry could date someone who isn't brave enough to deal with all the shit Harry's life throws at him. Like, Harry's partner, I think, should be willing to join the trio on the Horcrux hunt should they be offered to. (I personally portray Theo, for example, as someone who doesn't think he's brave, but when he needs to, he's way braver than he thinks. Luna is brave enough to be herself and damn what anyone thinks. So you can play around with the kinds of bravery). Like, the fact Ginny didn't press him to know more about what they're planning and wanting to join the danger to help protect and defend Harry is insane to me. I think Harry deserves a ride-or-die relationship because he's a very ride-or-die person for the people he loves. (Hence why I love his friendship with Ron and Hermione. The Golden Trio is the definition of ride-or-die)
A bit of a tragic Backstory — this isn't mandatory, per se, but I think Harry would work best with a partner that has some of their own demons in their past. It's a little spice that I love. It's why I like shipping him with Theo (who from the very little we know of him can be read as being abused by his father, plus his mother is dead) or potentially Luna who saw her mother die. I think someone who's suffered some trauma similar to Harry would be better at connecting with Harry and seeing him in a way even Ron and Hermione struggle to do.
So, yeah, this is like, my thoughts on shipping Harry with any character and what's the broad strokes of my recipe for my preferred Harry dynamic in romance.
But, like with most things in fiction, it's all about execution. If you write it well enough, anything will work.

hmmmm 🤔
Aged up Bumblebee for wof requests pretty please :)

So.... I went a little overboard, and just decided to draw how I envision the aged up kids for the hypothetical arc 4 in my head. No Peacemaker though, cause 1: I ran out of room, and 2: I have literally no ideas on what to do with him.
I also decided to include some headcanons about them under the cut (also some close-ups of the art above)
Dusky
. 6 years old, making him the oldest of the group (would also be the tallest if he didn't slouch all the damn time)
. He's doing a lot better now :) (dw, I'll traumatize him again later)
. He's still a pretty anxiety riddled guy the majority of the time, but not nearly as bad as he was in book 15
. Overall he's a really gentle soul and is very easy to get along with. He'd have an army's worth of friends if he wasn't terrified of talking to new people
Mink
. 5 years old, just a few months older than Cliff (to fix how her age didn't make any sense)
. Wears a TON of bracelets, which is because she enjoys making them
. Is the one friend that cares for her friends so much that she'll yell at them if they talk bad about themselves
. Is also the type of person to make sure everybody's taking care of themselves. I wouldn't call her the "mom friend," she's moreso the friend that very aggressively cares because she just has a lot of love inside of her
. (also maybe it stems from the trauma of watching her sickly mother get worse and worse until she died much too soon...)
Cliff
. 5, also is the tallest of the group
. The essence of his being is a cross between a himbo, a theater kid, and a bard
. HUGE mama's boy. He's the type of guy who will call his mom for an hour at least every other day (Auklet's jealous of their relationship)
. Has taken lessons for a few different types of instruments, but prefers bowed string instruments the most
. Is incredibly embarrassed by that one published anthem he made as a little kid and rewrote it at some point. Auklet, Mink, and later Bumblebee know this and will sing it at random to mess with him. Dusky's more merciful but he still finds it funny
Auklet
. 4 years old, shortest of the group (Cliff would probably use her head as an armrest if they weren't quadrupeds)
. Looks and is perpetually tired because her sleep schedule is shit
. She's a history nerd, and is especially interested in the history of animus magic
. She's also an enjoyer of conspiracy theories (again mostly with stuff about animus magic and the mystery of where it's gone)
. The interest in animus magic mostly stems from how it disappeared before she would've been tested for it, and the idea of how she could've had it but now she'll never know drives her kinda crazy
. Mommy Issues™ (which is to be expected when your mom is Coral. (I just want more characters in universe that hate Coral okay?))
. Has no real desire to be queen, and really hopes that someone else will take over the throne
. Doesn't wear as much jewelry as you'd expect from somebody in line for the throne, only having a few piercings on her fins
Bumblebee
. 4 with Auklet being about 9 months older than her, making her the youngest
. Her personality has become essentially what you'd get if you took Sundew's brashness and combined it with Cricket's eager nature
. She strikes me as being a bit of a jock as well. I don't know what kind of sports these dragons have, but I think she'd be good at them
. Her and Dusky have a sibling-esque relationship, it's a classic extrovert and introvert dynamic with them
Close-ups:

i don't have it in me to really produce any kind of a robust post on the subject, it but something i find particularly interesting to think over is the hope aspect's relation to narrative and fiction, and specifically fantasy as a genre - we've got associations with the aesthetic trappings of magic and wizards via eridan but broadly speaking 'fantastical' also covers jake's media interests in adventure and action movies and cape comics. the usual incoherent rambles under cut
i know i'm probably reaching here but i'm not really interested in adhering to the idea of classpects as a perfect, strictly defined and systemetized approach to narrative - or rather, i find it interesting but limited, i think there have to be some bleeding edges to the thing.
anyway when i talk about hope and fantasy it definitely also crosses over into 'comforting fantasy' and escapism (tavros is one of those bleeding edges, engrossed in games and daydreaming about flying and magical fairies) but i don't think 'escapism' really covers the entirety of i'm trying to get at here
sure, on the story level hope is almost certainly an aspect related to beliefs the characters have about the world - including notably coping mechanisms - but what about on a metaphysical/metanarrative level? if the aspects are building blocks of a narrative-as-reality, as i'm inclined to look at them - what narrative element does Hope describe? is it the tone or emotional gist of the story or is hope something to do with the audience and their beliefs about the story? how does that comport with the 'fantasy genre' stuff i gestured at earlier? what even IS the core of the fantasy genre, anyway - is it about magic and dragons and swords or is it about existence having some intrinsic narrative weight or meaning?
cue an extremely circular and navel gazey soliloquoy wherin i remark upon my own relationship with fiction and reasons for being preoccupied with this particular media object, during which the floor opens beneath me into a yawning void to which i am apparently oblivious. look, i know i'm polluting a lot of this with a bunch of other random shit i happen to think or find interesting about fiction, but in a story like homestuck which to some degree asks 'what does it mean to be part of a narrative' - the aspect that i might argue potentially suspension of disbelief/investment in the narrative SEEMS like something worth turning over a few times
and now comes the time where i gesture at gamzee, rage, whistles and psycholonials without any of the voculabary which which to discuss those things. i don't quite understand the ongoing clown motif - or rather i feel like it has depths which i do not understand, but that's okay. anyway; what's the instrinsic opposite of hope as belief in a meaningful existence? might just be finding out that everything you thought meant anything was just the setup for a punchline you didn't see coming. all along you were just a really stupid joke.
... or maybe it's you, the audience, who were stupid for caring? no, i don't really buy the ultra-cyncial reading a lot of embittered former fans bring to homestuck, and it definitely doesn't line up with hussie's stated positive position on fan-work, but there's some palpable element of cynicism to the story. if you're already not happy with it apparently not delivering on what it you feel like it 'promised' and then it starts poking and prodding at you even more directly and comparing you to a character as unflattering as caliborn - i get it. and the epilogues are even more blatant about asking the audience what they expect from the media they interact with, and in that case i do understand the feeling that it is directly challenging or even insulting the reader for being invested in the fiction in the first place, even if i make no such assertion about that being the actual intent.
i got so far off-topic with the last paragraph and now i'm too out of steam to pull it back into aspect theme territory. i typed and deleted a dozen disclaimers about what i'm trying to say here but really i'm just wondering out loud! feel free to tear me apart if you read this far i guess.
#the usual disclaimer that i'm retreading old ground with classpect stuff because i don't trust anyone else on the subject#i hope the sparknotes version of the essay i'm too fucked to write makes sense.#i'll come back one day with sources and better articulation#WIP

Thea Sisters Book Reviews: Part 1
I will be posting my honest and unfiltered thoughts on each and every one of the Thea Stilton books >:3 (Including the Mouseford books and Special Editions, or at least the ones released in english)
There will be three per part, a part posted every Friday, and this one is Dragon's Code, Mountain of Fire, and Ghost of the Shipwreck :D
Dragon's Code: 6/10, ah yes, the titular first book of the series. Where we first meet the girls, their mentor, and how they got their name. You’re probably wondering why it’s ranked so low. Well, you know how the first episode of a series is always so different from the others, and it's often people’s least favorite? This is because of “growing pains” so to speak. The series was finding its tone, its footing, its characterization, so it's only natural it's gonna be a cut below the others. And also because it was released in the early 2000s, it was kinda stereotypical in its portrayal of Violet.
The book is from Thea’s perspective, and it starts with her meeting the girls. From there, we see the girls’…rough interactions, and then they’re faced with their very first mystery. It starts with a strange mouse, Hans Ratson. Supposedly, another new student. He’s been acting suspiciously ever since Thea and the girls met him. Then the Whale Family, who work at Mouseford, keep saying cryptic things about what happens if you “stick your snout where it doesn’t belong.” Then after random things start going missing, the girls begin to investigate. They find a secret room, with codes, and most importantly, a dragon statue. After solving the puzzle and the mystery of why all those random items disappeared, they find a Viking ship down in a cave! And down there as well, hanging down from his ankle via a length of rope, is Hans Ratson, or more accurately, Bartholomew Sparkle, a journalism teacher, and one of Mouseford’s best graduates, who disguised himself to investigate that very mystery the girls were.
Like I said before, this book isn’t really the best, since the codes felt kind of overly convoluted, and the girls’ personalities are…not the best. The character designs and illustrations are also notably rougher than the others.
All in all, despite not being the best book in the series, you should still read it. It’s not a bad book at all. And you get to see how it all started.
Mountain of Fire: 6/10, same reason as the first one. The girls head to Australia to Nicky’s ranch, where her sheep have fallen ill. Who is behind it, none other than the ranch’s rival, Mortimer MacCardigan, the usual jealous, petty, money-grubbing villain from the older books. He poisoned the grass that the sheep eat, and now Nicky and the girls have to find a way to heal the sheep before they die.
This book is definitely not bad, first off the villain has a lot of personality, and is quite memorable, if just for how much of a petty bitch he is. Like damn, imagine being a grown ass man beefing with a college kid. I also liked the conflict with Mortimer, his son, and Nicky, I thought it was interesting. How the hell did Mortimer have a kid?? Who knows. The conflict just didn’t catch my eye as much as the other ones, but that's not an inherent issue with the book. The representation was a little…iffy, I have to say, but I’m not that qualified to talk about that, so I’m just gonna leave it at that. Also, this book is from 2006, so that should explain a few things.
I would still read it though, don’t let my neutrality on this book sway you. It’s still pretty decent, at least compared to the shit they publish now. COUGH COUGH IRRELEWOOD HOAX COUGH COUGH.
Ghost of the Shipwreck:
-Part 1:
7/10, a short but fun read! We follow the Thea Sisters as they prepare for the hatching of sea turtle eggs, but Professor van Kraken mysteriously disappears. Once they get into his lab, they hear that he’s been sending a Morse code. After rescuing him from Windy Grotto, they find out that there are treasure looters on the loose after the sunken treasure nearby. After getting van Kraken back on the surface and almost crashing the submarine, the girls are attacked by strangers in black diving suits, likely the ones looking for the treasure. And just when they think they’re saved, it turns out that the new ferryman Captain Coral is their boss! They get captured, but with the efforts of van Kraken, they’re rescued and the treasure is recovered.
Although it only accounts for half of the book’s content, this is a good story. The villain is memorable and is actually competent, the action scenes have that thrill that keeps you interested, and not to mention Violet being an absolute girlfailure, trying to deal with her crush on Professor van Kraken. My only gripe is that it was far too short and that the second part should have been its own book.
-Part 2:
7/10, also a good read! The girls are invited by Violet’s parents to Beijing to see an opera her father is conducting. When they get there, they meet Xiao, Violet’s childhood friend, and he shows them to their suite (did I mention that Violet’s parents are bougie?) and Violet whisks them all around Beijing. They eventually end up at a market, and they each get a differently colored stone to represent them. They also find a beautiful lacquer box to keep them in, however, as soon as they buy it, someone is already trying to get them to sell it. They refused, and from then on, their trip went off the rails. They find out the lacquer box is the key to a treasure, and that’s why Madame Hu, the pushy woman who tried to buy the box, wanted it so badly.
I also think this was a fun story! Although, as I said before, this definitely needed to be its own book instead of being shoehorned into one book with a completely different story. The highlight of the book is definitely Madame Hu. With a striking design, intimidating demeanor, and underhanded tactics, she’s one of the best villains to come out of this series. (I might just be biased because she’s hot.) In general, the mystery is interesting, especially Violet’s mysterious, almost prophetic dream that just– never gets explained.
All in all, definitely read this book! Well– Read both stories in this book that is.

Munday meme

What do you look for in a rp partner?
Chemistry, above all. Writing chemistry is an absolute must, and someone who is willing to actually give me something to respond with. OOC interaction is important as well, but I understand that we're all busy, we're adults, and I absolutely don't expect everyone to chat ooc with each other (especially because I'm a massive culprit here as I'm antisocial af). It's a MAJOR added bonus if we have OOC chemistry as well as writing chemistry, but we don't HAVE to have OOC chemistry to have good writing chemistry either. I have written with people before and we hardly spoke OOC and we just chatted OOC in the tags and shit to get a feel, etc, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it absolutely does help to have OOC interaction and feel like there is a common interest amongst Rp partners. But yes, writing chemistry is an absolute must for me.
Favourite trope?
Oh man, so many... I'm a slut for so many tropes, lol. But my favourite is probably slow burn shipping, getting to know each other and pining and falling in love. I also love frenemies, enemies to lovers, grumpy and happy getting tossed together, and chaotic gremlins causing mischief. I'm also a big sucker for ANGST. Honestly, just give me something to work with and I'm happy, lol. I want to explore all the things with the muses and cause my muses to have reactions.
Who is an author that inspires you?
I think every media that I take in inspires me one way or another. A lot of my inspiration is simply from every day things, common things that humans do, whether that is good or bad. I get inspiration from my favourite movies, music is a LOT of my inspiration, you guys are also a lot of my muse and inspiration. I take it from where I can get it, and that's everywhere. :)
What is the muse that you write for the longest?
Rp wise, it would be my Inquisitor, Kaaras Adaar (from Dragon Age). I think I wrote him for a good... 7-8 years? I mean, I still WILL write him and his blog is still up, I've just not been very DA inspired as of late, tho I do imagine with the new game coming out, I'll likely get back to his blog eventually <3
As for non RP writing, Megatron has been my longest muse, from Transformers. I have a whole long fic series about him, his past, his post war life, lol. It's a wild ride X'D
Do you tell your friends / family that you write?
Yes and no? lol. I'm shy and awkward. There are some people that know I write, there are people who knew I USED to write (don't know I still do), and there are people that don't know I write at all. Most of my family and RL friends don't know I actively write, let alone write fanfiction and RP lol.
Do you ever get jealous when rping? How do you handle this?
I have in the past, yes, and I think that we all have days when we feel a little jealous or down. I've suffered through some very bad depression in my past, and that was a very unhappy time for me, with skewed visions that the depression no doubt made me think. Thankfully, I have been doing a lot better in the last few years. I still have my moments where I do feel like maybe I'm not as good as my RP partners or entertaining, lord knows I'm no way near as chatty as some of you guys lol, and that's okay. I've come to terms with it over the years. That's just the person I am, and there's nothing wrong with that. I know it's just the negative vibes talking and being stupid. When this happens, it's best to just step away from the PC and go enjoy something else. Come back when you feel better and it's all good. Remember, RP is a hobby, and you should enjoy it, it shouldn't make you feel bad. Thankfully, I'm pretty good at recognising when this happens if it does, and I'm able to handle it maturely.
Do you ship someone’s muses on your dash?
Most of the ships I wholeheartedly support, lol. In particular, I love Alaara x Gale (but also Alaara simply oogling her entire camp) @chaoticbard . Seeing Alaara on my dash just brings me joy, she's just such an amusing character. Cassian and Ras are also another couple that I love seeing on my dash, big beefy boys @ode-of-odr , @crimesought (also Sornin and Cassian ofc <33 ), Literally Minthara and anyone because @spiderwarden just writes her SOOOO WELL!!! Also ofc I'm entirely bias when it comes to Haarlep x Raphael. (:
Do you have developed dynamics with the OC of another mun that has influenced your OC or Canon muse?
Oh absolutely! Check out Alaara and Haarlep, and how they have both moved forward (especially Haarlep lol). I absolutely adore their dynamic, and then because of that interaction, I have been able to harass Astarion @apalestar (and in turn, Astarion makes Haarlep's ears bleed), and it's just so damn funny and fun. I have chaotic gremlin energy with @silvertiefling and Haarlep, which I love so damn much as well, as Haarlep still tries to fuck her constantly lol (ofc he does tho...). But I think each and every one of you that I write with gives Haarlep a unique dynamic. I think that that's what I love about writing him so much, tho, is that he's willing to be decent enough to interact with good aligned muses, and chaotic and evil enough to play with evil muses. He's REALLY flexible, and I love that.
What’s one random headcanon about your muse that people mightn’t know?
Ummmm, I think I pretty much splurge them all out whenever they come to me, LOL. Haarlep is an open book X'D You know my secret one which I will keep between us and Haarlep's potential blood :'D

Sort of dumb Drakengard and Nier stuff I find really really interesting
this will be long. and dumb. and probably wrong. under the readmore

This is an image of what the Alien’s ship looks like in Automata. And yes, it most definitely looks like a flower. Interesting thing is, aliens coming down in a ship shaped like a flower is something that sounds really familiar to the lore: of how in Drakengard, the Watchers came down with the Flower. (fact check me if that’s wrong though)

This image is faintly in every in-game cutscene in Drakengard. These are implied to be images from the universe’s altered Bible? (Christianity is the main religion in the game, it’s just altered with things like the Goddess the seals etc). Which, means, if you squint…
this image looks like a dragon impaled on a tower. It’s pixelated as fuck but higher quality images do confirm this. If I find one of those I’ll update it. (something something, timeloop is obvious)

These two scenes have been paralleled to death. Yes, the black box scene in Automata does look somewhat moderately kind of if you squint like the scene in which Caim pacts with Angelus, but let’s focus more on the ladder scene because something has always bugged me about it.
Firstly. The souls themselves. Maybe it’s just me… they look like egg cells? Which, no, I’m not going “Caimangelus had sex, good for them” I’m going “If this is the case, what else are referred to as “eggs” in this game?”

In the original version of the game in Japan, the Seeds of Destruction are not referred to as Seeds. They’re called eggs.
another thing. We get to see what happens when a seed is destroyed in ending C. And for a brief second, it looks like this:

Another thing about this scene. Something I also never noticed was that when he pulls out his soul, Caim’s chest does… this?

I’d gif it if i could but atm I cant, but believe me. Angelus just shoots it out from her mouth he just reaches into his chest like it’s liquid. And again, back to the ending C scene:

What does this imply?
…Jack shit lol I just think it’s interesting. Smiley face.

Accord is an incredibly mysterious character in the world of Drakenier. We know nothing of her origins, who created her, why she is at all, and the most we know is:
There is a lot of her. She was created in the “Kingdom of night”. She was created by “something like humans”. She studies singularities. Her goal is to prevent the fall-down. She’s a boob lover.
Something interesting to note is that, the character of Adam kind of somewhat maybe shares a lot of design parallels with Accord. Not even just in terms of the use of white/cream.
Adam has glasses, a black tie, and on one hand has a glove similar to what Accord has. In the anime he gets the same tattoo of the Cult of the Watcher’s Eve had in the game, and Accord is specifically stated to have taken an interest in the branch involving the cult’s creation.
But what’s weird is that Adam… is a machine. And accord isn’t. At least, she’s not supposed to be? Who knows. I have lots so say about Accord but most of it is just theorizing so I’ll leave that for another day.
But I want to talk about the other twin: Eve.

Weirdly enough, Eve and Brother Nier and to an extent, the Shadowlord, share a lot of similarities as well. Sure there’s the white hair, the fact they’re both siblings of someone, etc etc etc, but something I never noticed was how similar their attacks are. Thank the fucking sadfutago church thing for that one lol.
I mean… just the fact that these two not only share the same English VA, but that in the automata DLC for Replicant, the Shadowlord boss music is replaced by Dependent Weakling. (Fact check that for me too, it’s been a while)
Weird parallels all around.

These… doors. Why are they here?
for context, in a Drakengard level you stumble across just this… room with a couple random, red doors. Some of them are open. Some of them are not. I. Don’t. Know. Why. These. Are. Here.
(I mean I do… I very much do, but again. That’s theory.)
Anyways. Doors are actually mentioned in the game, in the final line for ending C. “A pitiful child shall defy the hands of the gods, and a door will close.”
Hmmm?? Thing to note: the “hands of the gods” are dragons. “A pitiful child shall defy the dragons, and a door will close.”
And to end off this post, a fun fact; before becoming the first intoner, Lady Zero had a different name. Rose.
#drakengard#nier#drakenier#nier automata#nier replicant#drakengard 1#drakengard 3#caim#accord#angelus#a2#eve#adam#lady zero#intoner zero#2b#9s#kaine#AND IF I GOT ANY OF THIS WRONG PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I DONT WANNA BE DUMB AND ILL FIX IT IF I WAS :3

if you ever feel up to it, i'd love to hear how you got the mew. hearing stories about people and their pokemon is really fun.
SOMEONE TOOK THE BAIT LET'S GOOO i wanted to talk about thisSDFFDKS
anyway i got my hadou mew through basically a miracle encounter - back in 2020 i was buying a lot of older pokemon games to fill holes in my collection, either games i never owned or games that i lost over the years from childhood, and as for my missing gen 3 games, i ended up going for japanese copies of firered and sapphire instead of english because having foreign carts is neat but mostly they're just a lot cheaper. buying secondhand pokemon games is always fun because often times the seller doesn't wipe or even check the save file and especially if the save file has a lot of playtime, they're like time capsules from a stranger right. so both games come in and the sapphire has nothing interesting but i'm perusing the boxes of this firered and uhhh
LMAO my initial reaction says it all, i literally just found this thing on a completely random firered cart i bought! it was not advertised to have mew in it on the ebay listing, in fact the seller i bought from sells a LOT of imported japanese pokemon games (and other gba titles) so i imagine he just has a pile of these and he picked out a random one to mail me without so much as checking what was on it.
of course mythical pokemon on gen 3 carts are dubious, it's not like it's particularly hard to gameshark a mythical pokemon, especially considering that i've gotten a secondhand file before with shit like a box full of Deoxys caught at level 2 on the first route in hoenn LOL... so i was pretty serious about checking for legality on this thing as best i could - backed up the save file and inspected it in pkhex, all data was 100% accurate to the event and also reasonable RNG wise, like normal random IVs and stuff... checked for archived versions of this event mew, none of them were identical to online injectable ones, which means the owner couldn't have downloaded and injected it... and most of all, context clues

here's ancient pictures of this mew traded to my english leafgreen so it's readable for everyone - i had not done anything with this mew yet so it's completely untouched from how i found it here. we can tell from looking at this that whoever owned this mew was training it with the exp share as its still holding it and is level 23 despite being met at level 10, and the moveset... solarbeam, mega punch, dragon claw?? very random moveset that i can only imagine a child using. this mew looks like it was played with by its owner legitimately. additionally not shown here, the firered cart had a lot of playtime and like 2/3 of the dex complete, the boxes were full of pokemon that the owner had been breeding and a few unhatched eggs, like i hatched one and it was a completely normal eevee so they may have been getting extra eevees for pokedex purposes etc.
basically i cannot 100% confirm this mew was obtained legitimately without teleporting back in time and getting that japanese movie preorder bonus myself, but there is literally nothing strange about this mew and the save file it comes from is well loved and appeared to be played by a child doing normal pokemon stuff. so for all intents and purposes, this mew is definitely legit to me. actually insane happenstance. i have never gotten anything this crazy from a secondhand file before
think of it this way. some japanese kid in 2005 preorders a pokemon movie > he goes to the store to redeem it for a mew in person. in 2005. in japan. > he plays with the mew a bit > at some point he stops playing pokemon > he sells the game to some random american seller after never wiping the save or removing the mew > the american seller buys jp pokemon games in bulk to resell on ebay so he has a ton of them and probably doesn't check them for what's on them or the old save files > when i order it from this random ebay listing, the american seller picks a random fire red cartridge out of his bulk stash and mails it to me > it ends up in my hands 15 years later after the kid first got this mew
like holy shit it's a small fucking world huh
another old convo from the RM discord because i'm nostalgic about it, i had just started talking here at the time... i'm gonna be honest the ribbon master challenge and the people i met through it genuinely changed my life and this mew came into my life at the perfect time so it means a lot to me on top of being insanely cool
anyways i went on about that longer than necessary but yeah bless my mew i love him

i originally didn't wanna talk about this, cuz i genuinely get afraid that if i critique too much, the creators will see it or people will have torches and pitch forks, but, uh.
one thing that's really bothered me, ever since i first got into the series, was the dragon.
not Porridge, no, but the obviously parental dragon.
like, when she first 'showed', my immediate thought was "oh, is there gonna be a subplot where they think Porridge got taken by Rupert and Amir, but then they eventually co-parent with them?"
yeah, that didn't happen. in fact, almost nothing happened. the dragon is just a super minor antagonist, and when i realized they weren't gonna do anything with them, i was like:
"THEN WHAT'S THE FUCKING POINT???"
maybe they had to cut some corners, but you guys couldn't just... cut out the dragon entirely and make Joan and her army fight something else? hell, they could've had a snippet where there's remains of Porridge's bio-parent, but there's literally nothing but "evil big dragon, must kill evil big dragon, even tho they're probably looking for their fucking baby".
i love Porridge, he's cute, but i thought they were gonna do something more with his lineage. especially considering, in the TTP universe, it's canon that dragons have been supposedly extinct. like, there's so much lore potential there?
still really do love TTP, but i would definitely have to warn people ahead of time that there isn't a lot of lore or worldbuilding in it. which, i wouldn't mind if it was a simple fairytale love story with curses and shit, but they included a fucking dragon and little crumbs of lore.
just kinda feels like gimlet really wanted to make a simple love story, but thought people wouldn't like it that much, so just added random things here and there, and i'm not even just talking about the dragon.
sorta wanna know if people would be interested in my take of TTP? again, i do love the podcast, but my brain's been itching to dive into this. the cast is memorable and charming, but, for me, that's sorta where the writing 'ends'?
but, again again, i am on edge about potential backlash, and i also understand that some things are better left alone, so if no one's up for it, i totally get it. just wanted to ask in case anybody's curious!
if this sounds harsh, it's genuinely not meant to be. i relisten to TTP whenever i desire to for a reason. i am really engaged with the cast, their personalities ( however rightly or wrongly they're presented ), and how they interact with each other. and i really understand that, especially in the time the podcast was made, queer stories were, and definitely still are, needed. i just wish that writers, esp queer writers, weren't so afraid to be 'simple', y'know? paying attention to your personal interests is important, and the key to doing what you love.

ok here are some ideas for my human stuck
Mituna Captor - a twenty eight year old walmart greeter who wears exclusively bad dragon merch and random shitty taco-cat tshirts from walmart or toptext bottomtext meme tshirts and flannel pajama pants, or pants so tight you can see the outline of Everything going on down there. Other than working he spends most of his time in outpatient therapies or hanging out with his various partners. He can't drive and he rides the bus everywhere and that usually means he's 30 min late to everything. Mituna had sort of a shit childhood growing up and it's one of the few things people know about him due to his parents infamy where they live, and sets him up a bit for failure.
Kurloz Makara - a thirty year old occultist ex-satanist, probably into a lot of really disgusting internet spaces growing up but he's mellowed out a LOT and has started going to intensive therapy since his break up with Meulin. Kurloz is very popular in the local BDSM and rave scene and met Mituna through selling him LSD. They now regularly meet up to get high as fuck and watch shitty horror movies and have weird sex. Kurloz makes most of his money through mysterious methods online, though, most people are pretty sure he's just getting money from his uber rich dad. Kurloz is one of those people that people don't let into the party because he has laced things before as a teenager just to fuck with people.
Latula Pyrope - a twenty seven year old streamer who currently lives in a group home for mentally unwell adults, and is currently on a large roster of antipsychotics. She is currently attempting her previous past "conspiracy theorist" persona for something more chill and normal and more focused on her interests and things that make her happy instead of things that drive her into deep deep psychosis spirals. Her and Mituna go to the same therapy center but they don't share any of the same sessions, and have set it up that way to make sure they don't overlap. Latula doesn't like Kurloz but has recently been trying to stomach him in attempts to support Mitunas relationship.
Kankri Vantas - a twenty six year old who currently lives in Porrims house rent free because he can't get a job. He spent most of his childhood in and out of psyche wards and has exclusively gone to special ed schools growing up, despite this, he is incredibly incredibly book smart and well spoken. You wouldn't assume his background if you only just met him. He has no idea how he got lumped in spending time with these three jackasses considering they're all fucking crazy and he's literally so fucking normal. Identifies as a "voluntary celebrate" and says its due to religious reasons, though is extremely clammy about said religion. Has an obsessive crush on the idea of Latula Pyrope, and spends a lot of time with Kurloz Makara talking about theology and his specific interest in reincarnation.

Happy STS! What are your characters' favorite fun facts?
Heya! Been holding off on this because I've mainly been trying to understand it. I'm pretty sure it means just what they think is a cool fun fact so I'm going with that, answering what they'd say about "oh here's a fun fact...". Sorry lol. Excuse to post interesting fun facts.
Lexi - would love the psychology behind friendship if she read about it. Like maybe that animals can make friends or that it's one of the first things infants learn. Or she'll give a cool gardening fact like plants reacting to sound
Maddie - stuff like "did you know that you'd need 40 billion Legos to reach the moon" or random things related to a special interest, and her looking up animals facts will also add to that, such as talking about how cheetahs can't retract their claws
Ash - "did you know Viggo Mortenson broke his toe during Two Towers?"
Gwen - I don't think she'd be able to pick a favorite. She loves reading so she'd probably read a fun facts book at some point about specific topics like music or she'd know the publication history of a series. She also loves researching so she may go down a rabbit hole and then discover something like "hey did you know middle fingernails grow the fastest?"
Robbie - he knows the most random shit. Like "With 13 minutes of end credits, The Lego Movie 2 has the longest amount of end credits for a non-Disney animated film. Thus, it is also the first animated film to use that amount of end credits without post-credits scenes." (From IMDb btw also I pull up this fact at random times)
Akash - knows a lot of stuff about sports. Like how numbers 86, 89, and 92 have never been worn in baseball. Or his a dragon obsession led him to know they first appear in Mesopotamian art as snakes
Jedi - he pulled "intangibles can't breathe while they're phasing!" Out of his ass, as well as thinking of at least 8 powers that Gwen could possibly have been demonstrating in chapter 11. Do not ask him a fun fact about the powers, because he will spend ages listing all of them
Carmen - I don't think she would particularly like the term fun fact. Facts aren't fun, they are just facts! However, she genuinely does find theoretical powers fascinating, so she might list a fun fact about why the existence of dragons is so intrinsically connected to Alii powers , and she also definitely knows a lot of fun facts about the plants and animals in the area, such as what to do if you get yourself stuck facing a predatorial deer
Well, I hope I answered this correctly! If not, hope you enjoyed some fun facts!

Dragon's Dogma having only one save file may be a design choice (I know of at least one major thing you're referring to), but in actual practice, it just means that some people are objectively going to lose progress or have very negative experiences with the game
To that point, I started a new DD1 file before DD2's release and I ran into an issue where I just kept freezing on random load screen, right as it was autosaving, so my save file kept getting corrupted. Lost like 5 hours of progress from the start of the game, had to do it all over again, then it happened again in a different spot. The only reason I was able to make any meaningful progress until I figured out the issue was by making manual backups
I'm honestly terrified of the same thing happening with Dragon's Dogma 2 and have actually been stopping my play sessions periodically just to make a manual backup, then loading back in. Not even including the in-game event(s) that can royally screw your playthrough, that is a completely unnecessary fear that the devs have chosen to create, which is particularly egregious considering the mountain of performance and crashing issues people have been experiencing due to poor optimization
People who want to save scum or simply want the security of backups are always going to find the means to do so regardless of what the devs intend. I mean, DD1 had a mod that automatically backed up your save file and it was already retooled for DD2 literally on release day. To inconvenience all players purely for the sake of encouraging a specific play style is, quite frankly, insulting to peoples' time. Plenty of games manage to create compelling exploration experiences and interesting points of consequence and tension without tying any of it to some random, severely limiting mechanic or design choice
I say all of this as someone who's currently 40 hours in and is loving the exploration (which evokes that first time experience of playing Breath of the Wild), but who absolutely abhors the notion of having to repeat a 20+ minute long trek because I got to a quest area to save an NPC from some monster and the NPC ends up falling in the water literally as soon as I arrive, causing the game to auto-save because the quest is now "complete" (failed). Or, suddenly all of my pawns have swan dived into a river due to pathfinding issues or climbing movement quirks, causing me to waste time, rift crystals, or ferrystones to recuperate. Or, being forced to automatically talk to a passing NPC/pawn during a fight, causing my escort NPC to draw aggro and die while I'm trying to mash out of the dialogue menu
Defend the vision of players needing to pay attention and sit with their consequences all you'd like, but small, dumb shit like that is honestly infuriating and it happens way more often than it should
i get that this is annoying but i also think that if the ability to savescum existed in the game, everyone would do it. would i necessarily complain about multiple saves in a game like dragon's dogma? probably *not*, but i would miss the experience of being forced to engage with the game in a way i would not if i had access to multiple saves. i found myself missing this in baldur's gate 3 — because i had the ability to savescum things like rolls, i never played with the consequences of failing rolls.
is that a failure of those game systems? yeah. larian wants you to engage with failed rolls, but how many players do you know actually do that? who don't just press f9 when they get a shit roll?
you can dislike these systems, that's fair. but dragon's dogma fills a lot of niches that other games do not. one of these niches is a one-save system that forces you to engage with the game by making you play the game with your consequences, or suffer some really annoying backtracking with the inn save system. i do not think that every game has to appeal completely to every person. if you think dragon's dogma is insulting to your time, that's fine. if you think the execution is bad (which i could argue for, even though i really like what dd2 does) that is also fine. not every aspect of the game is gonna be a hit, god knows there's a particular section of dd2 that i think was a real miss (those who've beaten the game know exactly what i'm talking about) but i mean... there are reasons for it, infuriating or not. that is also part of the experience.
#i also did not experience these things the way that you did but i don't think that my experience of the game necessarily negates yours#asks#.txt
