re that last reblog although only tangentially actually related i’ve been thinking a lot lately about how “it made me cry” seems to be becoming nearly synonymous with “it was good” and what that kind of...implies about the supposed purpose of art or expectations people have of art or whatever. because obviously defining what is ‘good’ is hard to do and people disagree etc and probably to many people if something evokes a strong enough emotion to make them cry they WOULD automatically consider it good. but i think i don’t! i think there’s a lot of media that evokes strong emotions in me when i’m consuming it but that i certainly wouldn’t consider good and might even consider actively bad and i think that’s especially true with media that makes me cry specifically.

and on the one hand like who cares right people can consider things good on whatever basis they want to but on the other it really does seem like it ties in pretty closely with this idea that something being confessional or Honest or personal automatically makes something good (and conversely, if you want to make good art, it has to be those things), because those kinds of personal and intense and ~honest~ stories tend to be the kind of thing that is frequently able to evoke tears/strong emotions/whatever without actually Needing any sort of refined craft or skill behind it.

and i really don’t like that!! i really don’t like the frequency with which i ask if something is good and get a response of how much it made someone cry! i don’t think it’s fair to a lot of incredible art to draw that kind of equivalency and more importantly i really think that treating art like it has to be Personal and Honest to be good is going to end up impacting the kind of art people want to make in a bad way and FURTHERMORE i think it’s like. bad for artists. it’s bad to feel like in order to make art you have to be tapping into these very personal things because literally like. lots of things are personal for a reason.

and like this is an unedited post that i think maybe seems like it’s talking about two different things but really i think they are both part of the same Trend and i think it’s really. an unfortunate and reductive trend that is likely bad for a lot of people and is Definitely bad for. the type of art that gets acclaim
