So, last week in Warsaw we had an all-time low water level in Wisła, the main river of Poland — in some places it was only 20 cm deep
(usually it's between 2-7 m, depending on a time. Again, normally when the water levels are low they are still 10 times higher)
So! Warsaw has a drought, the summer was hot and now we have a big flood at the south of the country. Nothing weird about that, what do you mean there is a climate change? /s
(We also had ~7 tornados this weekend but I genuinely don't know if that's a lot, internet says that apparently we usually get like 15 a year)
I heard that the this flood is comparable or will be even worse than the Millennium Flood, but hopefully the water won't get too far because of the new Racibórz Dolny reservoir. Let's hope it lasts and reduces the further demages... Otherwise Wrocław and Opole are fucked
(Not that that would help Stronie Śląskie where the dam has already burst and made the town impossible to get to. The videos from there are awful)
And, yknow, I think I prefer droughts+floods over wildfires in terms of climate change side effects but still it would be great if all those things just. Didn't happen. Every year we hear about droughts and record-breaking low levels of rivers and heatwaves and other anomalies—
And sure we do make steps forwards but it's like pulling out teeth. I wonder if it will influence the conversation around climate change in the following months or if the first snow this winter will make people forget (if we will get snow of course)

Microbes do a lot under the soil surface that can’t be seen with the naked eye—from sequestering carbon to building the foundation of Earth’s crust. But even tiny microbes are feeling the stress of a hotter, drier future. The study, published in Nature Microbiology, is just one part of the B2 Water, Atmosphere, and Life Dynamics project, which brought over 90 researchers from around the world to the University of Arizona’s enclosed rainforest at Biosphere 2 to conduct a controlled drought experiment and better understand what happens to the world’s ecosystems when water is scarce. Uncovering how soil microbes process carbon and interact with the atmosphere under environmental stress helps scientists predict and support how ecosystems will adapt in the face of increasing temperatures and prolonged drought. When most people think of volatile organic compounds, they think of aerosols—which can contribute to warming and have negative impacts on air quality—but the term “volatile” simply refers to how easily a chemical or compound can change from a liquid to a gas phase, says lead study author Linnea Honeker, a postdoctoral researcher who worked with associate professor of environmental science Malak Tfaily in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences during the B2 WALD project.

An article from 2007 which gives an overview of the devastation and horror we’ll face if we don’t stop using fossil fuels.
Where no refuge is available, civil war and a collapse into racial or communal conflict seems the likely outcome. Isolated survivalism, however, may be as impracticable as dialling for room service. How many of us could really trap or kill enough game to feed a family? Even if large numbers of people did successfully manage to fan out into the countryside, wildlife populations would quickly dwindle under the pressure. Supporting a hunter-gatherer lifestyle takes 10 to 100 times the land per person that a settled agricultural community needs. A large-scale resort to survivalism would turn into a further disaster for biodiversity as hungry humans killed and ate anything that moved. Including, perhaps, each other. Invaders do not take kindly to residents denying them food. History suggests that if a stockpile is discovered, the householder and his family may be tortured and killed. Look for comparison to the experience of present-day Somalia, Sudan or Burundi, where conflicts over scarce land and food are at the root of lingering tribal wars and state collapse.
The Statue of Liberty in New York will be gone and so will the city.
Cities and towns around the world will be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels and mega-storms.  Saltwater will penetrate deeply into continents destroying the few fresh water supplies remaining.  Heat domes will linger for months with countless thousands killed by the intense heat, torrential rivers of precipitation will create flooding so severe it will erase the places and the people who live there, and billions will die from starvation.
Greed, selfishness and the reckless pursuit of profits over people is killing planet Earth and all of us along with it.

Deuteronomy 11:16-17, KJV "And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron. Psalms 32:4, KJV "Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill: And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes. And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard. What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes? And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down: And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry." Jeremiah 2:6, KJV "Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness. Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up. And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads. Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads. Yea, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass. And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass." Jeremiah 14:1-6, KJV "For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit." Jeremiah 50:38, KJV "And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come up in my face. For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel; So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground. And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord GOD: every man's sword shall be against his brother. And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD." Ezekiel 38:18-23, KJV "I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought." Hosea 13:5, KJV "Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD. Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house. Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit. And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands." Haggai 1:7-11, KJV "And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles." Zechariah 14:16-19, KJV "Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit." James 5:17-18, KJV "These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will." Revelation 11:6, KJV Just as God causes droughts, He also sends the rain. #BREAKING: 2024 is the hottest year on record, surpassing 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. 🌡️
Fossil fuels and the destruction of nature are driving severe climate disruption — and that is driving severe wildfires, floods, droughts and extreme weather that threatens communities, accelerates wildlife loss, increases emissions and destroys even more nature.
🔥 We must heed these warnings in 2025 — more ecosystem restoration and protection and more ambitious emissions reductions to lower impacts, create jobs and finally turn the temperature back down.
The time for talk is over. ⌛

🛑New Blog Post Coming Soon🛑 “It is a grave and worsening injustice that the impacts of climate change are felt the most by those people who are least responsible for rising carbon emissions and global temperatures.
Without justice, we will not have a fair, healthy and peaceful world. And without climate justice, we risk not even having a liveable planet for future generations.” - Mary Robinson
This year alone, numerous extreme weather events have been taking place around the world including the heatwaves in Europe, North America, Asia, the wildfires in Canada, Greece, Hawaii, the floodings in Norway, China and the droughts in South Sudan to name a few.
The intensity and frequency of those extreme weather events are attributed to climate change mainly caused by human activities and will only keep rising if left unaddressed. Thus, the fight for climate justice has become even more crucial.
What is key in achieving climate justice is to implement the solutions which will help eradicate the harmful effects of climate change to those who have contributed the least to climate change (for example: countries in the Global South, Indigenous Peoples, etc…), but are disproportionately affected by it.
On September 1, our climate justice action guide 🌍🌱✊ will be published! Be sure to check it out to enrich your knowledge on this pressing issue, discover the different ways you can play a role in ending climate injustice, and much more!

World's wealthiest 10% have contributed to two-thirds of global warming since 1990, study finds
Wealthy individuals have a higher carbon footprint. A new study published in Nature Climate Change quantifies the climate outcomes of these inequalities. It finds that the world’s wealthiest 10% are responsible for two-thirds of observed global warming since 1990 and the resulting increases in climate extremes such as heat waves and droughts. The study assesses the contribution of the highest…

Happy to see an update that reservoirs have been recovering, sad I didn’t see this news until after it had started to resolve—but hurricanes are not a permanent solution to water loss.
I’ve actually known about this problem for a while because I studied environmental engineering. For those unaware, Mexico City, originally Tenochtitlan, was built atop islands in lake Texcoco in 1325.
As the city grew under the Aztecs, Spanish, and then Mexicans more and more was built on top of the lake, via floating platforms and then under colonial rule the DesagĂźe, where the lake was fucking drained to make a bigger city.
As a result of this and other hydraulic engineering efforts, the groundeater under Mexico City has been depleted so much that the city is sinking. That aquifer all their foundations are on top of is also Mexico City’s main source of drinking water.
Combine that with old, failing infrastructure (that is also sinking) that leaks tons of water (I think I was taught around 40% but I could be misremembering) and historic droughts, they have had a huge crisis and that crisis will continue.
I do not know what the solution needs to be. Obviously the people of Mexico City cannot rely on fucking hurricanes to replenish their drinking water. 22 million people live there, and hurricanes can be extremely destructive (and damage already super leaky water infrastructure more) and deadly. I do not pretend to have even a faint understanding of the political situation in Mexico, but clearly massive overhauls to water infrastructure, aquifer replenishment and stabilization programs, and a new source of drinking water are needed—and none of those programs are easy to undertake even in ideal circumstances, circumstances I suspect Mexico City is not in.
As someone who lives in the US I have always at least tried to pay attention to the problems in our neighbors Canada and Mexico (though I live way closer to Canada so they’re a little more accessible, to say nothing of the language barrier). The water crisis in mexico city is one I have been aware of for years, and global warming will only exacerbate droughts.
I’m sure there are more direct ways we can help our neighbors, be it charities, pushing for better US-Mexican relations and aid, etc. i don’t know what those specific actions are though. But I do know that climate change is a factor, and it’s screwing us all over—my home state, WA, which borders Canada has suffered wildfires, heatwaves, and decreased snowpack (which is gonna cause our own water problems fyi) already—and it will only get worse. We can all do things in our local communities, country’s governments, and our own careers (I did study environmental engineering for a reason) to deal with climate change, and it’s an issue we are much more aware of.
Hopefully if we do, it will at least lessen the droughts in Mexico and give them more time to fix their infrastructure. Ideally those efforts will be paired with the US helping Mexico however they want/need us to. Water shortages and crisis are emerging all over the world, and it’s a scary, scary problem.

James 5:17-18, KJV "These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will." Revelation 11:6, KJV Just as God causes droughts, He also sends the rain.
