6. Are there any good fics, that stay true to canon characteristics, where Jiang Fengmian lives? Specifically ones where the core transfer still happens?

I have this plot in my head that idk when I'll write it cause life right now is chaotic. The story would diverge at the lotus pier attack. JFM would have gotten stabbed trying to save YZY and passed out. Everyone presumes he's dead and YZY dies like canon. He wakes up around the same time WWX & JC comes back but stays still. When everyone leaves the area, he rolls himself into the water and swims to shore. Some how his body isn't noticed to be missing. JC gets captured like canon and WWX collects him with the help of WN. WWX asks WN to collect JC's parents bodies, WN comes back and said he was only able to save YZY body. They presume the JF body was dropped in the lake/burned. JF makes it to JYL and is reunited with JC later. (How would the plot diverge with JF leading lotus pier, being an active general in the war who is senior to everyone else, understanding the benefits of backing WWX, & who may be grateful for WN & WQ help retrieving his wife's body and securing his heirs life).

If anyone wants to write this, please do!! I would love if it stayed true to canon characteristics. @myblurryreality

Sorry. My reading comp is toast. Explain it like I'm drunk (I am). LWJ is only a bottom to satisfy western WWX top preference? (What about switch?) Should I not drink and ask?

Here's the thing, what about switching means you have to continually make it out of character for them to make it a thing? Wei Wuxian enjoys being in control teasingly and dirty talk, this doesn't mean he wants to be the doer to get his satisfaction. Lan Zhan is fairly shy about things, this doesn't mean he can't be overwhelmed as the apparent top.

Switching also doesn't automatically mean "more inclusive". To posit such a thing is sex shaming anyone's individual wants with sex. Hey, I like bottom Lan Wangji. What I don't enjoy is making him needing to be "more open" or "or more emotional" with the act of bottoming as if that's a claim that Wei Wuxian really needs for them to be equal. Too many seem to rely on this act as if Lan Wangji is somehow letting go for reals. Was him not finally being intimate somehow not enough with the person he loved? Why is switching somehow the true act of equality between couples constantly for fandom, and anything else close minded?

Because Wei Wuxian is the more ideally masculine of the pair and this is said especially of his old self, he would never have bottomed "if it was earlier". As if we weren't shown and told by himself about being taken in libraries or woods for Lan Wangji to do as he wanted. Having want to be submissive and penetrated by a partner doesn't mean lesser, especially for gay men. Lan Wangi despite being described as the maiden of the story, doesn't mean he needs to also be suddenly docilely overwhelmed due to the act of penetration. As described in the book itself Wei Wuxian is the talker, Lan Wangi is the doer. What of this dynamic means they have to shift in preference of action and words to be a top and bottom respectively for the act of sex to make them wildly out of character suddenly because of switching their usual roles during sex?

Arms up high, back arching and beautiful before he leaned over and—

lwj was going to hell.

jzxuan snickered quietly to himself, obviously having smelled whatever mortifying smell he had released, as he pulled on an oversized t-shirt—one of lwj’s. “Hope you don’t mind,” the other alpha said as he grabbed his phone from the bedside table, fingers swiping absently over the screen. “You gave it to me last night, even if you never actually let me put it on.” He motioned to a pile of clothes in the corner. “Both our clothes were a mess.”

lwj glared at the pile, which was clearly a mix of both their clothes, his own on the bottom, because apparently Drunk Wangji had decided to just leave muddy clothes on the bedroom carpet.

Another bump sounded from the living room, and lwj pushed himself out of bed, eyes clamping shut as the world spun. Bump then water. He definitely needed water.

“You okay?”

lwj hummed a very noncommittal hum. He wasn’t exactly not okay, but he definitely couldn’t say he was okay either. He didn’t think he was going to throw up, at the very least.

lwj moved to grab his discarded sweater—slowly, he moved very, very slowly. His hand hesitated over the sweater. “Does ‘decimated’ involve a mess that may get on our clothes?” he asked. The last thing he wanted was to ruin another of his mate’s possessions. In the grand scheme of a decimated house, it probably wouldn't mean much, but it couldn’t hurt.

“Eh~ maybe? Not so much you won’t be able to come back and change, if you decide you need to.”

“Alright,” he said softly, pulling the sweater on. It barely covered his ass. Drunk Wangji needed to learn that pants were important. He had flashed jyl last time, too. At least this time he hadn’t also ditched his underwear, but he’d prefer to just not lose his pants while drunk.

“Shall we?”

lwj glared at his friend. He was way too cheerful for this early in the morning. Was he usually a morning person? Yes, but he was not an annoying, cheerful one. He was a neutral, productive, morning person. Smiling should be reserved for after 10am. Maybe even after lunch. Yes, smiling and laughing were after lunch activities.

Did he actually know what time it was? No, but it seemed early and lwj refused to check. He’d much prefer to live in a world where it was before 10am, and he hadn’t slept hours past his usual 6am, thank you.

1) the character everyone gets wrong: Jiang Cheng might be the most polarizing character of all IMO. But I don't think people get him "WRONG," so much as we tend to fall on either side of the discussion: either more or less critical of his inactions/overreactions. Personally, I am less inclined to forgive a lot of JC's BS, but!!! I also blame his parents' godawful child-rearing for him being so emotionally constipated.

2) a compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom: Canonically, LWJ never bottomed a day in his life, and I rebuke any heresy refuting this god-given evidence, amen.

3) screenshot or description of the worst take you've seen on tumblr: That one poll where people actually voted to behead WWX and marry Xue Yang had me like WHOMST???? Like, I understand marrying JGY, but XY?! O_O

4) what was the last straw that made you finally block that annoying person? I haven't blocked anyone in the CQL/MDZS fandom (yet)

5) worst discord server and why: I don't use discord. I wish they'd change the layout, it's a jumbled mess IMO.

6) which ship fans are the most annoying? I don't read anything but WangXian and 3zun fics, so I don't really get annoyed by other ships

7) what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them? See #1. I'm actually hating JC LESS because of how the fandom acts--I used to spit on that man's name, LOL. XD

18) it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on... The fact that LWJ has the arm-strength of Hercules himself--people never talk about how physically inhumanly STRONG he was! Like...he lifted WEIGHTS. O_O

20) part of canon you found tedious or boring: every time Sect Leader Yao speaks.

21) part of canon you think is overhyped: The Incense Burner chapter. Like sure, all the smutty smut-smut, but I don't like sex pollen type tropes.

22) your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores: LWJ being a literal TODDLER when drunk. It's the most adorable thing on the planet, but people usually just have LWJ pass out and wake up the next day, without showing how his repressed childlike/immature tendencies come out when he's inebriated.

23) ship you've unwillingly come around to: Lan Sizhui with Lan Jingyi. I see them more as brothers, and I ship LJY with Ouyang Zizhen more. But I get it--having LSZ w/ Jin Ling would be LXC w/ JGY all over again, in terms of who would marry in/out; while having LSZ w/ LJY stay together in Gusu is much neater, logistically.

24) topic that brings up the most rancid discourse: See #10.

25) common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing: that LWJ bottoms. He doesn't. End of discussion! 😤 And Happy Hanguang-June!!! XD

It's really funny that ppl think lwj standing beside wwx in his 1st life will change things. When lwj did this in wwx's 2nd life, he got called a traitor, & this was 13 years later when ppl's hatred was supposed to have lessen by time. He'd get killed on sight if he did this at that time w/c is exactly what the lan clan feared. The conflict is so easy to understand but these victim!wwx stans are just too deep in their victim mentality they just missed what mxtx wrote.

Well, I thought this passage was pretty telling:

"At this point, a small voice suddenly spoke up, “Dad, I feel that maybe he really didn’t do it. Last time, in Yi City, he was the one who saved us. This time, he seem to be here to save us as well…”

He followed the voice. The person who spoke was OuYang ZiZhen. However, the father immediately scolded the son, “Children shouldn’t talk so carelessly! Do you know what situation we’re in? Do you know who that is?!”

Withdrawing his gaze, Wei WuXian spoke calmly, “Now I understand.”

He had known from the start that no matter what he said, nobody would listen to him. What he denied could be forced; what he admitted could be twisted.

LWJ alone is ineffective once he publicly sides with WWX against the mob drunk on their own righteousness. Regardless of how unimpeachable his reputation had previously been. The juniors' voices alone are dismissed. You need the help of someone from the inside. But people forget about NHS (which frankly NHS would love). Even at the second siege of the Burial Mounds, NHS is the one who runs into the cave first. And again, that was a perfect inimitable situation and a huge strategic misstep from JGY (also caused by the pressure NHS put on him w the threatening letter) because this environment is created where everyone is forced into a room cave, exhausted and powerless, essentially forced to listen to WWX. NHS's little comments spurn the conversation on too.

Yi WeiChun shouted, “There’s nothing for us to chat about with you!”

Wei WuXian, “How could there be nothing to chat about? I’m not buying it—don’t you want to know how you’ve suddenly lost your spiritual powers? From the bottom of my heart, I’m not so powerful as to have done something to all of you without anyone noticing.”

Just as Yi WeiChun spat, he heard Nie HuaiSang respond, “Yeah, I think he makes a lot of sense.”

WWX gets room to speak and slowly weave a trap for SuShe. He saves everyone there in the most heroic way possible. And finally, at Lotus Pier, Nie Huaisang's witnesses come to take down JGY's reputation from all sides, firmly refocusing everyones' zeal for "justice". So many things had to happen for WWX to get a break. Not in the least, there being a new focus for the angry mob to rally against. But ppl are like: WWX won bc of the power of love and hopes, wishes and dreams! Well the story is more cynical. Having support is nice on a personal level, but "justice" still comes about because the goals of someone on the inside, are temporarily aligned with those of the protagonist. Someone who perfectly weaponizes his image to appear as unthreatening as possible to the established order while subverting it. No matter how wonderful and brilliant the protagonist is, or how perfect the love interest.

"What!" Wei Wuxian sits up. "How can you say that? Of course it's important! This is the person you'll be with for the rest of your life, Lan Zhan."

My dash brought me several posts on the same topic at once, and since I couldn't choose which one to reblog, I decided to make a separate one and tag the OPs, lol. @jaebald @withinsnow @grewlikefancyflowers

I love both vers and switch!wangxian (a friendly reminder that switch and vers are different terms) because reading the same kind of smut over and over is boring and I start skipping, but initially I was in favor of switching them precisely because of power dynamics. And not WWX being the badass YLLZ and thus being the one more suited to topping (what even is that logic, heavens) — no, it was about how during the course of the book we see WWX vulnerable physically and emotionally, injured, distressed, needing help. (Even more so in the show, but CQL has a different relationship dynamic altogether, and since their preferences in CQL aren't expressed, I can vibe with nearly anything.) We see him like that way more than we see LWJ like that. LWJ is the love interest who, in the present timeline, swoops in and saves him, who takes care of him, who is the rock WWX can lean on. In the past timeline, the Xuanwu cave is the only time we see LWJ in distress.

Thematically, it fits that in his second life WWX finally gets that one person in his corner, finally has someone who will help him and stand by his side. Thematically, WWX can fight his own battles, but it's nice when he doesn't have to. I can acknowledge all of that and still wish that we had more moments of LWJ in a position of vulnerability and WWX being his rock.

For me, it's not about their power objectively. They're both shown as badass during the plot. It's about how LWJ, despite his adorable drunk shenanigans and offended princess act, fulfills the narrative role of the LI saving the MC. That's why I adore WWX's tendency to swoon over LWJ being soft and cute, to call him a good boy, to fuss over his dirtied robes, to treat him like a spoiled princess. It evens it out somewhat.

It's also why I like their sexual dynamic as it is presented in the book (chapters 111 and 112, I didn't read the incense burner extras) — despite WWX physically bottoming, he is the one who takes initiative, who tells LWJ what he wants him to do ("Wouldn’t it be convenient if you take off your forehead ribbon and tie my hands up?"), who plays at being a helpless victim with gleeful abandon. He plays at it. He blabbers not because he wants LWJ to shut him up but because he wants to egg him on. He laughs, he has fun, he doesn't take any of it seriously even in the heat of the moment. Their dynamic isn't the typical dom/sub you see in fics, or the typical smut, which is why fics that have them as vers or switches tend to get it right more often since they throw "typical" out of the window. Funnily enough, I have seen more BJYX (the actors' CP, if you're out of the circle) fics nail that exact dynamic than actual wangxian fics.

Sometimes people have physical preferences, and maybe WWX isn't into sticking it in or LWJ isn't into taking it. Sometimes people have psychological preferences, and maybe WWX isn't into doing the work, he wants to be a pillow princess and feel pampered (hello to LWJ bathing and dressing him, that man is the best, WWX really lucked out). Sometimes those two overlap, which is why people tend to conflate top/bottom with dom/sub and probably why the "YLLZ is a top" take exists — when you're into someone being forceful and powerful in life and you want to see them behave that way in bed, it doesn't usually translate to envisioning them topping from the bottom. When I see that take, it usually comes across as someone wanting WWX to be absolutely in control and drive the encounter. But if we look at MXTX's books, the ship that is the most traditional one in this sense is actually hualian. From the glimpses we get of Xie Lian remembering their first time, it was exactly that.

I'm not into telling people what they should or should write, nor am I into judging other people's fanons. Fandom is transformative. It makes sense that people would change stuff to their liking. But when you take a canonical dynamic that is subverting the stereotypes both from a "personality" perspective (the reserved one topping, the bold one bottoming) and from a smut perspective (the top taking cues, the bottom remaining himself instead of getting overwhelmed and lost in his own head) and try to claim it homophobic, that's where I draw the line.

Lan Wangji makes extremely deadpan videos of his daily life with Wei Wuxian and their kids and nephews (and nieces if JC and JYL had more). This would include:

*shows a video of LWJ staring out the window for a solid thirty seconds, face entirely unchanged and somewhat disappointed, turns camera around to show Wei Wuxian and the kiddos putting mentos in soda bottles and trying to chuck them at each other, camera pans back to his face, still entirely devoid of emotion*

That one time Jin Ling got stuck up a tree and Wei Wuxian tried to get him down and also got stuck up there and now the other kids are looking for a ladder while LWJ just watches them from the patio, drinking tea. The kids finally give up and shamefully come to LWJ and ask him for help, he gets his husband and nephew down without a word.

The one where he buried 5yo A-Yuan in a pile of bunnies and got scolded by Lan Xichen for it because they might bite him if they get annoyed with him.

There is an entire compilation of rabbits that won’t leave him alone. Climb into his lap. Follow him with every step. Get excited when he comes outside. Hear a guqin and start looking for him. Just. He’s the rabbit whisperer. One of the black ones is just about always with him.

Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian interacting in any capacity is going to involve a lot of hitting each other and pushing each other over. Only-child kids think they hate each other, but people with siblings are all ‘no no, siblings are just Like That’. People think Yanli is all innocent till they realize she def only tells them to stop when she thinks they might actually get on each other’s nerves. She’s in the ‘boys will rough house and probably only have one collective braincell’ category.

People won’t stop asking him if he speaks so he vaguely makes mentions of having extremely low verbility. They ask if he does sign and he’s not really sure how (lol cause words hard) to explain to them that sign doesn’t really help when the issue is more of him not having much to say tbh. This is apparently the wrong thing to say because then people start being all ‘yeah I get you, I’m pretty dumb too, at least you’re pretty’ and he’s just sorta sitting there with this smacked fish look on his face while WWX can’t stop laughing next to him at the very idea of someone calling his husband slow. Wow. LWJ just sorta finally gets out that he has like two degrees and teaches giqun lessons and it’s amazing. The kids find out about it and can’t stop laughing for hours.

“Hey, why did you name your son ‘sorrow and longing’?” *commense 10 minute video of that time Wei Wuxian got arrested for something to do with a satanic ritual and that’s when LWJ ended up with custody of his adopted son for the next three years and he was in a really angsty mood tbh so it just kinda happened* not a single commenter expected that, even less so when he mentions that they weren’t even together at that point

Films what the viewers think is a prank at first, where he pours a dangerous amount of chili powder into a mug of hot chocolate (with a completely straight face) and then brings it to WWX who takes a drink and makes a dreamy little sigh and goes ‘you always know how to make it just like I want it’ and no one is sure how to react to this video. It’s like watching someone peel and eat a lemon.

You know that video of the girl with the deadpan voice saying she went downstairs to take a shower and there was something brown in the bottom of the tub but it turned out to be potatoes and she’s all ‘not a problem I was expecting, but a problem I can handle’? Okay so that’s how he talks in every video. WWX hands him a baby and he talks to them exactly like that. People ask if he’s good with kids and WWX is all ‘yeah, he’s not just a rabbit whisperer, he’s a baby whisperer too, he’s super great with kids’ *shows LWJ talking to a baby in That Voice while the baby looks at him in utter adoration*

“What’s it like growing up gay? Do you ever get shit for it?” LWJ.exe has stopped working, he has only met one straight couple the same age as him and they’re his sister in law. His brother has three boyfriends, one of which is his brother-in-law. He doesn’t know what a het-er-o-sexual is and he doesn’t want to. Pretty sure his uncle is acearo and hasn’t seen his parents in like 20 years.

LWJ: ‘I apologize for being so emotional in my last video.’ *viewers scrambled to find what video he meant because they ain’t ever seen that man emotional before but end up finding a video where Sizhui told him he loved him and called him papa and gave him a hug while WWX filmed, you can barely see LWJ’s left eye twitching and he pets Sizhui’s head for a moment* viewers are very confused on how this constitutes emotionalism.

Viewers ask to see his brother ‘you know, the one who apparently has three boyfriends’ and LWJ posts a video of LXC passed out on a couch with like three fully grown men all in various states of sliding off onto the floor while the teens play a game of ‘who can stack the most random objects on uncle’s bodies without them waking’ because apparently LWJ and WWX were gone for a weekend and the uncles were supposed to watch the kids (like, all ten of them probably, there’s probably a lot of kids) and it’s Sizhui filming the whole thing cause he’s the ‘good one’ and never does bad things. But he’s also like Auntie Yanli and is totally gonna egg them on from the sidelines.

WWX hands LWJ literally any food and LWJ will eat it all with a completely straight face but as soon as WWX is turned around LWJ is chugging a glass of milk with a look of death on his face. The kiddos straight up can’t stomach his cooking.

😭 someone asks why their hair is all so long and LWJ puts up a video of chatty adorable Sizhui braiding WWX’s hair while he tells him about his day at school. It’s. Too. Cute.

The never ending debate on if LWJ’s deadpan personality/speech is acting or not. No matter how much everyone assures them he’s really just Like That people just aren’t convinced.

Someone points out several times that in their house they have a room with a satanic symbol on the door. That’s just WWX’s home office it’s all good. This is treated as ‘lol WWX is so dramatic’ for like four whole weeks before LWJ posts a video of Sizhui standing outside the office looking nervous. ‘What’s wrong?’ He says. ‘Dad called me into his office.’ Sizhui replies. ‘WWX must be a very strict father,’ the viewers think. That’s not it. That’s not it at all tbh. That video got flagged on like four different platforms and kept getting removed for graphic images and half their viewers don’t. Want. To know. What happened. In that office. (WWX doesn’t even see what the big deal was, that goat was dead when he bought it shut up.)

That one time the kiddos hypnotized Jin Ling into thinking he was a kitten. The adults all thought it was really weird that he was finally going through the whole ‘pretending to be an animal’ phase at like ten, but then the kiddos fessed up to learning how to hypnotize and they aren’t sure how to fix it. WWX instigated a rule that no brainwashing is allowed outside his office from now on.

People ask how WWX and LWJ met and it’s told from the POV of Lan Qiren who progressively getting drunker as he tells the story of the terrible high school romance that he had to watch between bad boy WWX and his precious baby angel nephew that made him consider quitting and how no one believed them when they insisted they didn’t get together till after WWX got out of jail for the cow incident.

Inspired by your service dom post- something I've noticed in reading Wangxian fic from fans who come straight from cql with no knowledge of the book is that they tend to write lwj as a sub and wwx as a dom and I just feel like that really misses out on so much of their dynamic and interior lives/personality

This is the post in question - I was rather late in getting to this. 

I would caution you against assuming that anyone sexual position or dynamic is necessary to a character’s personality or relationship to another person. That’s actually part of what I was pushing back against in that post - the assumption that any one set of behaviours can only correlate to one particular manifestation in one’s sexual life. In this particular case, I am myself interested in how devotion and indulgence towards one’s partner could potentially play out through a dominant sexual role, and would appreciate it if that possibility were not dismissed. But I don’t think that either possibility is the natural end result of that particular inclination. 

There is a habit in fandom at the current moment of discouraging the drawing of any kind of connection between personality, or interpersonal habits and preferences, and sexuality. I’ve encountered a lot of the subtext - or sometimes explicitly stated idea - that of course it’s valid to have preferences for how your characters have sex, but only if those are strictly id-based, “I think it’s hot” preferences, rather than anything based in analysis or broader characterization-based headcanoning. I don’t like this trend because I think the assumption that sexuality has no relationship to other aspects of one’s selfhood and interpersonal life is faulty, and based in societal stigmatization of sexuality and the sexual self. But I also don’t think there’s any inherent or deterministic relationship between those two things, and it’s possible to conduct such character analysis without treating behaviour that could have multiple sexual manifestations as definitive “proof” of one. 

I am also not convinced that WWX and LWJ’s dynamic in MDZS is contingent on those particular sexual roles. LWJ’s struggles with consent aren’t dependent on him being a dom, unless you buy into the idea that only doms can violate consent (untrue). (In fact, while LWJ is fairly physical aggressive during the drunk sex scene, it’s WWX who instigates it and who feels guilty afterwards for taking advantage of LWJ while the latter is in an altered state of mind.) Wei Wuxian also isn’t strictly a sub in the novel, as he expresses an interest in domming in one scene (his noncon kink seems to go both ways), and I don’t think him being a sub is really necessary to the story. He’s a bottom because MXTX likes to have the protagonist bottom (idk if this is a broader genre convention, but I wouldn’t be surprised), but it’s not really important. 

I also can’t speak to whether sub!LWJ/dom!WWX is a CQL-only phenomenon. I feel like the vast, vast majority of what I’ve seen has had dom!LWJ/sub!WWX, but then again there’s plenty I haven’t read and I haven’t filtered for CQL-specific fics to look at what trends are. In fact, something I’ve observed is that predominantly or exclusively CQL-influenced fic for them often involves them switching, rather than one character exclusively domming.

Saw this cute post earlier on my dash making the claim that The Untamed version of LWJ wouldn’t be a top like in book canon, he’d be a bottom.  I didn’t reblog it only because I respectfully disagree and didn’t want to come off as raining on their parade. It’s all in good fun. I figured instead I’d share my headcanons about these two crazy kids and what their sex life might be like once they get together:

-First of all, I like to think that they would do a lot of experimentation and would switch frequently depending on their mood. 

-Things they have in common that would come out during sex no matter what they are doing: they both love each other deeply and both committed to making the other person happy. So lots of service topping and crying.

-Differences are that WWX is more playful and provoking and more likely to want to try some new kink he read about in one of NHS’s porn books. LWJ is very intense and focused and will absolutely take charge if WWX is being too much of a little shit.  That may play out with him topping or it may play out with him riding WWX until he is speechless. 

-LWJ does feel so deeply that there will be times he is overwhelmed and WWX will take over and make him feel loved and cared for. LWJ would definitely want Wei Ying to top him if he’s thinking too much about having lost him for so long, he’d want to feel him everywhere.

-I love the idea of WWX being flirty when they are around other people and LWJ has no problem ignoring him. It’s when Wei Ying does something unintentional that LWJ is affected:

     -Wei Ying tying his robes up to show his knees because he’s calf deep in the lotus pond he’s installing by the jingshi.  

     -the curve of his throat showing because he’s laughing brightly at one of the tiny juniors showing him their sword work.

     -WWX roasting someone obnoxious during a tedious conference or banquet.

-On such occasions LWJ would literally stop what he was doing no matter what it was - Sect Leader Yao could be mid-rant about some nonsense - and walk away to grab WWX and drag him off to somewhere private to shag him into the mattress.

-WWX never knows what to expect on the rare occasion when LWJ will get drunk. Is he going to be Softe Babie who will pout until Wei Ying puts him to bed and makes love to him sweetly? Or is he going to immediately strip off his robes and demand the most filthy thing that not even NHS has ever heard of?

-WWX likes the idea of sex in the cold springs, but never able to execute it - the water is just too freezing. So instead they wait until visits to Lotus Pier to frolic in much warmer water. LWJ tends to be the top on those occasions because generally they have dinner with JC earlier in the evening and his brother-in-law irritates him to the point that he’s feeling aggressive and possessive. WWX may or may not have noticed this pattern and instigates things during dinner.

Lan Wangji definitely had to explore the cold springs every time he reminisced about this scene:

Jin ZiXun thought nothing of this, “It’s not like they’d get drunk with just a few cups. Even if I drank eight large bowls, I’d still be able to fly away!”

A wave of cheers came from all around them. Lan WangJi was still sitting, staring coldly at the cup of liquor that Jin ZiXun forced into his sight. He looked as if he was about to speak when a hand suddenly took over the cup of liquor.

Lan WangJi paused in surprise, his knitted eyebrows unravelling at once. He looked up.

What first reflected against his pupils were black robes. A flute hung at the waist, tassels in the color of blood dangling off one end. The person who came stood with hands against his back. With a lift of his head, he drank all of the liquor and showed the empty bottom to Jin ZiXun, “I drank it for him. You satisfied yet?”

Laughter clung to both his eyes and his words. Handsome features accentuated his slender physique.

Lan Wangji starts high school in perfect step with the rhythm of his uncle's expectations and his duty to his family.

He doesn't quite stay that way.

My comments:  In which lwj and wwx giddily fall for each other in high school, and that joy lasts for half the story before lan qiren clues in and ruthlessly separates them by some 5k miles. This results in utterly tasty, angsty shock for lan wangji, who is shipped off willy nilly to his brother in London, who, while sympathetic, still enforces lan qiren's desire that he never get in touch with wwx at all or else he'll be disowned. Lwj gets drunk and hurts himself, but then later gives up and becomes the automaton his family insists that he be. Which is how wwx finds him 13 years later when he returns from the US to charge an exorbitant amount from the Lan Academy for cyber security. Slowly the pair works out their issues (with many false starts and misunderstandings), and there's a happy ending.

This is a Persuasion au, which is a Jane Austen story I'm not familiar with, and didn't need to be, so that's good.

Excerpt:  from a conversation lwj overhears after the 13 year interval (did I say angst?):

Wei Wuxian lets out a short, sharp laugh. “Are you kidding me? It’s surreal. I barely recognised him.”

“Really?” Jiang Cheng asks. “He doesn’t look that different to me.”

“I swear, I almost didn’t know it was him,” Wei Wuxian insists. “I’ve never seen anyone so altered. He just looked so… dull. Pale and dull.”

Jiang Cheng snorts. “He’s always pale.”

Wei Wuxian shakes his head. “Not like that. More like, washed out. Washed up, really,” he says derisively. “It’s like he got small.”

“He’s still taller than you,” Jiang Cheng points out.

Wei Wuxian swirls his whiskey, ignoring his brother and looking thoughtful.

“I used to think he’d outshine us all, you know?” Wei Wuxian’s voice is quiet now. “He used to shine so brightly he was hard to look at. And now, well.” He takes a swig of his drink. “I told him once to go into music, but I guess it’s a good thing he didn’t. You need a lot of passion for that,” he almost sneers.

“No doubt,” Jiang Cheng agrees. “Can’t say I’d ever associate the word ‘passion’ with Lan Wangji.”

“Hm,” Wei Wuxian nods. “Me neither.”

Lan Wangji holds his breath and tries to feel anything besides the torturous clenching of his heart. He brings his right hand up to press against his chest, sliding it underneath his suit jacket, hoping to ease the ache. But all he feels is the perfect ridge of scar tissue underneath the thin fabric of his shirt, and it sears a line of shame across his palm.

“Come on,” Jiang Cheng says. “I need another drink.”

Wei Wuxian tosses back the rest of his whiskey and turns to follow his brother back to the bar, leaving Lan Wangji alone once more.

He shouldn’t be surprised, he thinks. What had Wei Wuxian said that he doesn’t deserve? Lan Wangji is a small person, with a small life. He has his work. He has his family. But he has no friends, and he definitely has no passion. And yet, the words still sting. They strike at something old and wounded and desolate at the very heart of him, and Lan Wangji is almost paralyzed by the pain.

If he’d felt the stirrings of an unbearable hope earlier tonight, reality is now rushing back to crush it into dust. Foolish, he thinks. Shameful.

They end up in a ramen bar, of course, and not Lan Zhan’s bed. 

He cannot bring himself to be surprised; loving Wei Ying has never been anything like expectation. Wei Ying had once persuaded him to climb the bell tower together after midnight, and they had settled beneath the carillon and watched the moon set over the golf course; he had taken Lan Zhan to the canal that runs along the edge of town, renting a canoe and rowing so far north that it had taken them hours to get back; he had helped Wei Ying sample every flavor of ice cream from every ice cream shop in town, including the fro-yo shops, an endeavor that had left him giddy and half-drunk on sugar; and he has spent many a day following Wei Ying around the local record store and pulling him up from under the tables where they keep the cheapest records in boxes, dust in his hair and eyes wild with excitement. 

So tonight Lan Zhan does not, in fact, take Wei Ying back to his place and fuck him. 

He intends to, but Wei Ying is exhausted. The shine of it is in his eyes, and the trail of conversation veers wildly from one topic to the next. By the time he clutches at Lan Zhan’s arm and drags him down into a restaurant for an evening snack (just a little snack, you have no idea how hungry I am, Lan Zhan I could eat a horse I could eat you), Lan Zhan is wearily unsurprised. 

He is hungry as well, but for other things.

The restaurant is just below street level, located in the basement beneath a beauty salon, at the bottom of a short set of stone steps. Inside, the mood is warm, wood along all the walls and the ceiling, with a slate floor and the saffron filaments of incandescent bulbs burning over the long bar that lines the wall. Slim windows run along the top of the wall, allowing an unparalleled view of the shoes of those walking by. The sidewalk is splashed with light. The ramen bar is a knot in time, tied off in a pattern that does not match the world around them. Standing in this place, Lan Zhan feels like he has stepped through a copper mirror, into the fading world of the past.

They sit at the bar, Lan Zhan’s coat stripped off and hanging over the back of the chair. Wei Ying slurps his noodles when they come, his hair curling slightly over his cheekbones in the steam that rises from the ramen. His lips are bright with spice. He is an unglamourous eater, and a strange sight at this noodle bar, with stars shining beneath his eyes and charms clinking against the edge of the hand-spun bowl. In the open kitchen, the chefs speak in rapid Japanese, in which Lan Zhan is rusty enough that he only just catches the gist of what they are saying—something about their daughters’ schoolwork and the weather—as the conversation ebbs and flows around them. Lan Zhan sips his broth with deliberation. It is late enough that the room is half empty, and the sounds of chatter from the other diners are just meaningless murmurs. 

“How are you, Lan Zhan?” Wei Ying asks, when half the bowl is gone. Lan Zhan glances at him in surprise; the silence has become a physical thing around them that held his tongue in place, and Wei Ying shatters it so easily. “You look tired.”

“Mn.”

Wei Ying sets down his chopsticks. He turns toward Lan Zhan, leaning his chin on his hand. “Are you taking care of yourself?” His eyes alight with curiosity. 

Lan Zhan deigns to answer only with a raised brow. 

Wei Ying’s lips quirk and he laughs to himself. “You’re right, I need to do the same. But Lan Zhan, I worry about you. I have a ton of people to watch out for me every day. Too many, most days. I drive them crazy. But you don’t have anyone. I worry.”

His tone is soft, softer than Lan Zhan recalls, the accents of eastern China clinging to his words. Lan Zhan spends time with plenty of ex-pats here at the university, but somehow the sound of Wei Ying’s voice—so familiar, and so new—sends a thrill through him. 

“I have you,” he says. He lays his hand in the space between them. 

Wei Ying’s answering smile is half a flinch. His eyes skitter away and across the bartop. He reaches for his chopsticks and then lays his hand down flat, pressed against the whiskey-colored wood just an inch or so from Lan Zhan. The wood has been polished to a shine, and there are marks from the bowls that have rested there before.

“What is wrong?” he asks Wei Ying. 

“Nothing!” Wei Ying grimaces. “Nothing, really. It’s just.. It’s been a while, right, Lan Zhan?”

It has been almost four months since he has seen Wei Ying. And before that, nearly six months. Five years since they have been together in truth, since grad school ended and Wei Ying went off to his illustrious career and Lan Zhan chose differently. 

“Mn.”

Wei Ying can count the time as well as he. He breathes into the silence.

“I’m glad we are together now,” Wei Ying says. He slides his hand across the gap between them and twines their fingers together, sending a visceral thrill through Lan Zhan. 

For so long, they have been confined to distance. They spent endless hours together in grad school (fools, they: who should have counted), curled in one corner or another, but as the years grew longer and the splendorous rigor of endless academia eased into exhaustion, they had drifted apart. Wei Ying had begun reaching out to agencies in China and auditioning to be an idol, spending his spare time recording tapes to send to agents; Lan Zhan had retreated into the library stacks and his dissertations. The nights apart became more common than the nights spent together.

And yet. 

They did not fall out of love. Their lives shifted and changed, and Lan Zhan’s love for Wei Ying only deepened. Some nights, when he could not sleep, when he spent the long hours at the window and watched the moon dangle above the tiled roofs of the university, he thought that his love for Wei Ying was like a bottles of wine—it could live in the dark for years and grow only richer, the taste deepening toward the sublime, the fruit of the earth transmuted to something priceless. No matter how far apart they drifted, Lan Zhan knew he would never stop loving Wei Ying. His love was an essential part of him. 

It has never lessened.

But that does not mean that he is content. He misses Wei Ying, with a fervor that borders on the obscene. Most days he buries himself in texts at the library, spending long hours in the research department unspeaking, before heading to his second job at the bookstore and collapsing into bed. He works himself to forgetting, because drink has never been his vice, and only when he is tired enough to see stars does the sound of Wei Ying’s voice, the echo of his touch, ease from Lan Zhan and let him sleep. 

When they leave the restaurant near closing, the streets are quiet. The rain has eased away and left the sky a featureless black, stars and moon hidden by the clouds. The crowds have retreated to their bedrooms and dining rooms, and the windows of the town gleam with warmth. Lan Zhan stands beneath the edge of the building as Wei Ying pulls out his umbrella and considers it. 

He has been very quiet tonight. Lan Zhan is beginning to suspect that it is something more than exhaustion. 

He cannot stop thinking about the distance between them. 

“Wei Ying,” he says, and the object of his attention turns. 

Lan Zhan crowds him back against the wall, pressing him into the stone. It is cold and damp. Wei Ying is all muscle beneath him. Lan Zhan slips a hand beneath the edges of his jacket and touches him through the soft material of his shirt. 

Wei Ying sighs and Lan Zhan kisses him. His lips are sharp with spice, burning hot and Lan Zhan bites him in punishment. Wei Ying twists into him, clawing beneath Lan Zhan’s coat and jacket and tugging at his shirt, slipping his fingers between one button and the next and pressing his hot fingers against Lan Zhan’s skin. 

Lan Zhan breathes into Wei Ying and holds him up. He threads his fingers through Wei Ying’s hair and tugs hard enough to make him gasp. 

“Too long,” he whispers into Wei Ying’s skin, answering the unasked question. “Need you.”

Wei Ying looks up, and the lights of the evening shine in his eyes.

“You have me.”

Lan Zhan gathers himself, folding inward all the sharp edges of his desire, and steps back. 

He will take Wei Ying home. Small as it is, Wei Ying will fill it with his very presence. He will touch him, slip his fingers beneath the edge of his jacket and tug at the buttons of his shirt. Wei Ying will reach up, and the charms hanging from his nails will tickle as they slide across his skin. His lips will be slick with gloss, and he will taste like salt and peppers; his skin will be hot, even on a cold evening like tonight and with his clothes slick with rainwater; he will be everything that Lan Zhan has longed for, everything he craves. 

Lan Zhan will peel back his clothes and leave him bare, slim and pale on Lan Zhan’s white sheets. He will gasp as Lan Zhan kisses him, not on the mouth but working his way down his body, kisses on the neck and the bones of his shoulders, on the curves of his chest and the edges of his ribs, on his nipples and the soft skin at the bend of his elbows. Lan Zhan will kiss every part of him, lick the sweat from his skin and work his fingers into Wei Ying’s muscles, gripping hard enough that he will leave bruises that will last for a week, the remnants of Lan Zhan dug into Wei Ying long after he has left and boarded his plane back to China. 

But not yet. For now, they stand on a rain-slick sidewalk and watch each other, the silence between them a vast distance that Lan Zhan does not know how to cross. 

He will. He has three days with Wei Ying, and his heart sings as he thinks of it. It is enough time. He will make it enough. 

He will write himself into the shape of Wei Ying, and for all the long months that they are apart, he knows that he will turn outward, reaching, grown into the echo of Wei Ying.
