Some more thoughts about Dungeons and Drag Queens (D20), especially Brennan’s presentation as DM

Brennan spent a large chunk of his life attending or working at a LARP camp. He’s no stranger to dressing up for games. He played a space wizard on Ultramechatron Go. He’s no stranger to dressing up on camera.

But in Dimension 20, he is resolutely Some Guy™️ and honestly it feels like he is doing that to make D&D and other TTRPGs as approachable as possible. You don’t have to go over the top. You don’t have to dress up. You can just be Some Person™️ and let your imagination do the heavy lifting

Which brings us to D&DQ. Brennan is full glam. And people are Horny™️ for it. But I think a lot of people might be missing the point. Doing an all Drag Side Quest is a political statement in America right now. And if Brennan was just Some Guy™️ he could potentially give fuel to folks (who don’t actually know anything about him) to say “look at what the dropout sjws are forcing on this poor cis-het dude”

So Brennan cheerfully dons A Lewk™️. For the first time, Denise the super talented makeup artist gets a crack at his face. And yes, he’s meeting his players where they are. And he’s doing his best to let the spotlight shine on the Queens. But. He’s visible. He’s (intentionally or not) telling the world “If you want to come for them you’ll have to come through me”

Don’t get me wrong, I love the “Brennan hotboi!” takes. And maybe I’m reading too much into it. But I love the feeling that this cis-het white boy got sprayed with glitter, tossed on Eursulon’s pauldron, and said “I got y’all. It’s safe here.”

In a world where it is very much not safe to be trans right now, that means a fucking lot

i <3 thinking about my ocs on main hold on.. so klein is like. originally i was gonna make him a lil older but i think hes actually about 31. and originally the thing where hes xeres's roommate was kind of a joke at his expense? where i just wanted this really pathetic little man to be around and i thought itd be funny if hes like.. a guy who doesnt have a Real Job (hes a data entry freelancer. hes very passionate abt it and its definitely not interesting.) and who sublets his spare room to make rent to some student whos clearly got more going on for her than he does. and he has a lousy first name so he goes by his last name, and all his clothes are a little too big bc hes short, and he always dresses like an 80s office worker bc his dad was a washed up yuppie and he aspires to emulate him despite there not being much to emulate. and hes one of the "oh i just dont do labels you know" kinda people or at best hell say hes gay but hes not, hes bisexual but hes intimidated by women and hes bad at being masculine or taking charge and hes convinced himself that means he would be no good w a woman bc hes bought into the idea that m/f relationships have set roles that he cant fulfill.

but the most important thing about klein. is that if his teenage roommate came home one night and was like "hey man, sorry im late on wiring you rent, i can do it tonight but um btw i just killed a guy" he would definitely go ahhh fuck ahh well what are you waiting for we gotta deal with this before rigor mortis sets in!! like i think he wouldnt hesitate and part of it is that hes a good friend to xeres even tho shes always making fun of him, part of it is that he has a deep mournful yearning for something wild and special to happen in his life and i think hes always rearing to go for something that he cant handle, and the last part is just that hes too stupid to realize hes not involved and doesnt have to do anything about it.

Sometimes the homophobia inside the house is so much stronger than outside. And that's just... I don't know what to say.

Oh, and if you ask why I'm saying this, well. The community kind of made me stay in the closet, because I was not a gay or a lesbian and therefore not welcome into the community. And of course not that welcome to the outside world for that matter. Yeah

For sureeeee. I'm so sorry the community is for everyone and some people truly don't understand how excluding groups of queer people from their own community is so damaging ❤️ The infighting within our own community is so damaging and harmful to queer people who don't fit into what some perceive as "acceptable" and "family friendly" BUT it is also not welcoming to people who aren't in the LG(sometimes B and maybe just maybe T) area and this isn't even beginning to touch on people who don't fall under the label of "white" within the community and how they identify/present themselves.
