Ash had at least managed to get through a good portion of the night headache free, not getting too lost in his thoughts as the orders kept coming, a steady job to do to make the time pass by faster. He had managed to take a few breaks here and there, various different people stealing him for a few minutes, happy to catch up with others he hadn't had the opportunity to catch up with. Still, it was hard to ignore the self inflicted isolation, while it's mostly a blanket statement for the night, he knew a name was partially the bulk root of it. He hasn't shown much emotion regarding the matter, even as they sat by the bar earlier for a drink, eyes meeting with a soft glance for a second before moving on. Pretty sure he was in the clear even from JP.

But when he came over just as Ash was chatting with Ruth, empty cup in hand, it was almost obvious he wasn't just here for a quick refill to go back into the fray. "Well, I'm here so that our dear sister get to rest and enjoy the party," he didn't say it out loud as he tries to deflect, but the suppressed smile was evident in the warmth of being acknowledged as a brother. "Depends on your definition of live a little," Ash hesitated before topping up his glass with the same whiskey he ordered before. Knowing JP, the definition could go in a huge range of ways. Ash turned back to Ruth with a pleading look for backup, but knowing her, she's the one that has just gotten her own backup to pull him out from the safe space behind the bar. "Who's gonna get people their drinks then?" He was stalling as much as he could, pushing JP's glass back to him.

While he'd been chatting up Sada and Jer after their arrival, then Birdie once the party was in full swing, JP couldn't help but notice Ashton behind the bar and the almost hidden (if the two weren't as close as they were he would have missed it completely) dejected glances Jeremiah's way. And even though he knew Sada despised his friend, she was right about it being a party and everyone was enjoying themselves. He couldn't go all night watching Ash half-mope around - whether it be from Jeremiah's choice of date or just being here in the first place, JP was going to make it his mission to get Ash to let go for once.

An unnecessarily detailed analysis of the differences in perceptions and characterisation between the EN and JP versions of Aventurine ~ (voicelines included)

I cannot speak or understand japanese, but am exposed to it often through anime and playing some of my games in jp. So I appreciate my perceptions of cadence may be skewed by that :3 it would be cool if someone who does could discuss this too and whether they agree with my points !!

So...I'm doing this because it was stuck on my mind and I couldn't draw today since my arm hurts and i needed something else to do ~ I genuinely think your perception of Aventurine as a character could be very different based on your 'version' you experienced !!

so if you have some time to spare, any interest in this or Aven, or kinda hate Aven and are open to someone changing your mind... let us begin on this journe- lol. im not gonna do that. lets just get into it ~

this is gonna be an analysis of the differences in voiceline delivery in terms of feel and implications. at the end of each set of voicelines i also give a little summary in terms of the 'goal' of that version of Aventurine by giving the line that way.

So this is the first time we meet him, interrupting us in the line at the desk to check in. Listen to his EN version ~

Hotel security is on high alert with zero room for error. And with such a last minute change it really isnt something that this young lady's words can resolve on a whim. My esteemed guests from the astral express - please do not make it harder for her.

Now the instant feeling I get from this is...this guy deems himself a sort of authority, and his voice is heavily lilted with this kind of exaggerated-authority figure-admonishment while his words are still polite. The emphasis is very pointed, very very close to sarcastic. 'sUch a lAst mInute change' ~ he's being rude, essentially, through a very close-to-boundary passive aggression. The way he said esteemed guests, astral express, and the plea, its clear in his words he's almost exasperated by them already. Which is like ?? okay? why? or is this guy just a bit of a dick? - those are my thoughts upon meeting him like this, like...whats this guy's problem.

Now the jp version ~

The feel is rather instantly different. Here, he approaches in a sort of semi-polite intrusion, but still maintaining the sense of authority and knowing. It's matter of fact. He has a sort of ~ to his tone, right? Like he's being a bit passive aggressive but in a gentle almost melodic way, subtle, rather than the voice kinda dripping with 'you guys suck and are causing problems'. The feel I get from this is still like...uh who is this guy, but I don't feel instantly super like hey tf this guy is rude. He isn't outright rude, or admonishing, and he isn't sarcastic either. He doesn't act like 'esteemed guests' is a jab, he means it but has this lilt that makes you think he might not quiteee mean it inside, like you cant tell if he's quite genuine. This is the thing.

The point of Aventurine, his whole thing, is that you cant quite tell if he's being genuine or not. That's what makes you think, makes you squirm, makes you lose your mind over whether you can trust him or he's playing you. That's how he plays his game, his world. The jp one does this effectively instantly from the first line. The en one doesn't give me that impression. I don't feel like he's intelligent and shrewd and wonder if he's playing me, wonder what his deal is, I think he's being a dick. This obviously doesn't have to be clear in every damn line delivery, but in his introduction, and at a time where he IS making a play~ the mood should be set.

EN Aven Goal - pick a bit of a fight, impose status, put them down

JP Aven Goal - suggest status, input presence, subtly jibe

This only increases with the next line I'm focusing on, which is after they ask him who he is. EN version ~

-subordinate to supervisor Diamond. I was cordially invited by the Watchmaker. I also happen to be a traveller that's had to stand behind you for quite a while.

Now, heh, listen. This line honestly makes me laugh so much like... im gonna give you how it sounds to me through the eloquent use of emojis okay:

'sUperVisOr dIaMOnD' 😏😎 i was CORDIALLY invited by - the w a t c h m a k e r~~~~ 💅🏼😌☝🏼🤓 i also happen to be a traveller that's had to stAND behind you for qUiTe a wHiLe 😏😏😏

like...let me take a guy seriously lsdjkdkjsdsdk and listen listen. I KNOW he's supposed to be over the top here. Just the line itself without the voice over is snarky and 😏☝🏼🤓 okay? That's how he is sometimes. But the delivery is DRIPPING in sarcasm and derision. There is NO SUBTLETY even a bit. lol sigh, just listen to the jp~

instantly different. matter of fact, but still cocky and self important, subtle jabs without being rude or sarcastic. He doesn't use the fact he was invited as like...a show of coolness, he just says it like - yes, i was invited by him 😌☝🏼 because why would he? of course he could be invited, hes fucking ipc bro? thats not a flex. and especially when he says the last part about standing behind you - its more like a 'heheh, alas ~' not like ewwwyy peasants im standing behind you, dont you know. He is shrewd, careful, and incredibly eloquent with his speech. He doesn't use it to jab he uses it to play a melodic song of making someone a bit bewildered but impressed by him. His delivery is playful. That little stilted words part, its like a playful passive aggressive jab. He's not actually bothered.

Why would he be interested in picking beef with and looking down upon, which is what he is doing in the EN version, the astral express? There is no reason. This guy is literally interested in the opposite of that, even if he doesn't like people he uses them to his gain, the literal dialogue written here and as the story continues continuously perpetuates that he is trying to get in good/okay graces with them (and others, that's literally his mo) and he can use them and manipulate if needed. It makes no logical sense for him to be so rude here. he is rude with his words and suggestions, but its passive aggression like its supposed to be, not outright rudeness like EN.

EN Aven Goal - shove status down their throats, be a rude boy

JP Aven Goal - feigned nonchalance stating status, gentle prodding and testing with a sort of hehe not quite rudeness

The next one -

just...listen - EN ~

*sigh* I've been waiting here for more than 10 minutes. Do you know how many credits 10 minutes is worth to me?

This is just pure derision. Contempt. The line itself is, too, regardless of delivery. He is being a pp here. In the second half of the line, you can hear him almost grit his teeth. credits, minutes, worth. he's alllmost spitting the words. hissing. He is pissed off, getting actually angry about it, it seems. So self superior.

But listen - JP ~

Exasperated, a bit frustrated, but weary. He's like 'oh goodness, sigh, im wasting so much time here~'. You can almost tell he's playing it up, it still feels almost playful to me, like he's testing, being a cock but stifling a bit of a smirk and feigning a slightly overdramatic sigh. Its melodic, you can imagine him tilting his head and lifting an eyebrow, right?

And this makes so much more sense. The guy isn't in a rush. It's revealed later he literally had that room, and just strolled there and met them before the trailblazer got there. He's playing. He's being his stupid shrewd annoying playful self. Why would he get angry just to get angry? It doesn't fit with his character, or his motives. Why would the Aventurine get actively pissed off with some randos for no reason?

It would also make sense for him to play with this aspect of himself and his role. We know from later events Aventurine really doesn't deeply identify or hold much 'love' for his status or role, other than for specific reasons. It's like a double entendre, he's playing with you, and he's making a subtle joke with himself by playing up this act that he's just some money hungry asshole like his superiors are. Because he's smart. He's not just...an asshole.

EN Aven Goal - make sure his status is shoved so far into their large intestine that they have a baby bump - just coz

JP Aven Goal - sighing and being rather overdramatic in a jibing playful manner, being annoying, still toying with his status

One more set for this scene (and post) (i would apologise but im not sorry im sorry dshjsdjsd YOU CHOSE TO BE HERE ilu.) Here he is after Himeko suggests a solution. EN ~

Heh he's such a prick honestly /aff. lil shit. so, again, the line itself is rather turn-nose-up cheeky asshole type stuff that makes you wanna smack him and roll your eyes simultaneously. The delivery, again, is very: ☝🏼😌 and then 😒🙄. The way he's like 'nOT from YOU' all is sooooooooo childish, sarcastic, icky. like meh, eh, i throw my juicebox on the floor after ive pestered you to open it for me for three hours. the emphasis on the 'you' gives the clear implication he is derisive of 'you', not fond of 'you', and see's 'you' as beneath him in a sardonic and mean manner.

JP~

Matter of fact, playful, still a little shit. He's being purposefully irritating, he's not irritated. That's the clear difference here. Aventurine through this whole exchange has been, in the JP version, unflappable. He gives this effortless air of authority while making subtle clever half-jabs that make you both slightly flustered, confused, irritated, and intrigued the whole time. He is a charmer, a weaver of well placed webs.

This, to me, is how I prefer it. His theme, his thing, is playing. Cards, poker, life, anything. He plays, he gambles, and he never shows his emotions much behind that ever present smile - as said in his wiki page even. He is a man of subtlety, one that you can never quite work out and he wants it that way. And I think the jp version of him does that for me ~

Overall, for me, a summary of what I'm taking away from this exchange with him in both versions is:

EN Aven Goal - ??? wanted to be a dick, flaunt status

JP Aven Goal - flaunting, being difficult and annoying, but finding it a bit amusing? what's this guy's deal, anyway?

I think that's the thing. I would totally understand and be quite with you if you didn't like Aventurine from this scene alone if you played the EN. He is a character that is being a dick just...because? Thinks you're below him, puts himself into your business for no reason, etc. etc. I don't like him, like this.

But coming away from the JP one, I'm intrigued. I'm slightly ruffled, a bit irritated and confused, but intrigued. I want to know what his deal is. It draws me to him, almost begrudgingly. That's what's so beautiful about a character like this.

Both VA's are awesome and did a great job in different ways ~ Its cool to me how such a different feel for a character can be gleaned from the same lines but different deliveries. I'll probably make more parts of this through the game <3

Okay I've got beef with the Persona 5 Royal Art Book and need to yell about it.

Specifically about how much Royal content Udon cut out, and how much of a damn rip-off it is for fans.

To add context, I'm someone who has all three of the physical P5 game artbooks:

The 2017 version by Prima Games ($39.99 USD initial seller price)

The Japanese Royal Artbook (3,520 yen initial seller price, which is about roughly $24 USD as of this post)

And this one by Udon ($73.40 USD initial seller price)

So is this a karen-esque rant about how I "wasted money just to see pictures I already paid for?" No, far from it. I knew what I was buying.

... At least, I thought I knew what I was buying.

My reasons for purchasing the Udon artbook was to see the Royal content translated. The creator's commentary, the "about" section for Kasumi, the interviews, etc.

What I instead got was... This.

That tiny slither of pages underneath that paper bookmark (or on the right side of my finger)? That's what made it into the Udon artbook.

The book next to it? The Japanese Royal artbook.

So much got cut out for the royal section... Actually let's get into the specifics:

So first off we've got the index page itself:

Er, ahem. Wrong one. Sorry about that. Here's the index page in the Udon artbook:

Yeah. That first index? That's from the Kadokawa e-book artbook (about $14.52 USD as of typing this post), which I didn't mention earlier by virtue of the fact that it's, well, an e-book. This version by Udon is technically its physical release (though it wasn't promoted as such), just with "extra" Royal content.

So we're already off to a great start. 👍✨️

All of the pages in the Udon artbook are exactly 1:1 with Kadokawa's (bar some ridiculous choices in art page placements all over the book), even to the point where Udon has to actually credit them as well (hidden all the way on the back of the last page):

So it's literally just slapping an Udon label on top of it, and charging the same price as what scalpers are currently asking for with the Prima Games artbook.

Again... Off to a great start... 👍✨️

Let's talk about the Royal section itself, since that's the part I was harping on about initially (and probably what most of y'all are curious about anyhow).

Well, in the Japanese Royal artbook, we've got some snazzy pieces of Joker and Raoul, as well as 3D models of his Third Sem outfits, and sketches of the two:

All in all, a really cool section for him, and the Royal artbook operates under the impression that fans already might own the Vanilla P5 artbook. So no repeat content, this is all brand new for Royal.

The Udon artbook however?

... That's it. That's literally it.

"Surely there's more on the next page, right?"

Nope. Next page is Ryuji, followed by his Third Tier Persona, and that repeats for everyone else.

Everyone... Except for Joker, Sumi, and Akechi. There is no Raoul, Ella, or Hereward in the Udon artbook.

And speaking of Akechi:

No Loki here, either. Udon literally slaps in the ONE persona Akechi does not use during Third Semester.

Though I suppose in Udon's case, this goof-up makes sense because Robin Hood is shown in the Japanese Royal artbook as well.

... To explain Hereward. Because they cut Hereward out entirely though, it just looks like someone slapped images together without having actually played Royal (much less gotten to Shido's arc in Vanilla).

And of course, go figure, no Black Mask refs either. The closest we get is the JP Royal artbook with 3D models and sprites, but... Alas, we're still stuck with the P5A artbook being the only ref for him.

Now let's go straight to Sumi herself because my god did she get shafted...

Japanese Royal Artbook:

As well as 10 pages of her 3D model and sprites in different outfits or expressions as well.

... Udon Artbook:

And that is it.

And that's not even getting straight to Maruki because suprisingly? He got done even dirtier than Joker somehow.

In the Royal Artbook, he has 12 pages all to himself, most of which admittedly is also 3D models and sprites, but he has various concept sketches as well:

In the Udon Artbook?

Half a page. Seriously. This is all both he and José get in the Udon artbook. No Azathoth or Adam Kadmon in sight, nor either his palace ruler or metaverse outfits. Even for "avoiding spoilers reasons," they couldn't be bothered to add his casual outfits either.

And lastly... The interviews. My god the interviews.

So when I had bought the Udon artbook, I was really hoping these interviews would've gotten translated (there's 17 pages of this, but alas Tumblr's image cap is being a butt):

What we got instead?

... Just the interview responses about Vanilla P5 from the Kadokawa e-book. That's it. None of the Royal interviews got translated.

Would I recommend this artbook to anyone?

It honestly depends.

The Kadokawa artbook has content that was missing in the Prima Games version, so it is more faithful to the original Japanese release.

If you don't already have the Prima Games artbook, and are looking for a "definitive Vanilla P5 artbook," I'd definitely recommend the Kadokawa version in favor of it.

... But as far as physical releases, though? That's where I'm torn, purely because of the price point (and how much of a markup it is compared to prior releases, as well as JRPG artbooks in general), and the sheer lack of Royal content that does not make doubling the cost worth it.

So much of it is cut that overseas fans are unfortunately forced to purchase the Japanese Royal artbook on top of this one just to have a "full experience" of sorts, and that's roughly $100+ USD purely because Udon was too lazy to bother translating with Royal (which is in their right as a publisher) and half-assed it for obvious profit.

At this point, you really have to ask yourself if breaking your wallet for a tangible medium instead of a digital one is worth it personally.

But hey, Persona 5 fans will buy anything, no matter the quality, amiright? 🫠

Hey! This is a weird question, probably, and just nitpicky, but I was wondering if you knew how come Sano is "number 13" (ch43) on the student list in Class 2-3? I alphabetically ordered all the students, surnames first, and he came out on the 20th spot. The students whose surnames we don't know (Odawara, Akibe, Koizumi, Marilyn, Daisy) all place above him, but even knocking them down (assuming their surnames started after the S), he still wouldn't be the 13th... do you happen to know why? ☹️

your first mistake is going by english alphabetical order, when you should have been going by hiragana order (a-i-u-e-o ka-ki-ku etc etc), which does put sano at 13!

what complicates things is actually that we get another student's index number: Mame at 18 (ch39) ( i have double checked with the jp that its not a typo)

this puts 5 names between 13 and 18 when there's only space for 4

the only explanation i can think of (and probably the case) is because fuji, marilyn and daisy were not originally characters when ch3 (with the class photo) released in the magazine, and were only added in the volume release (citation)

so it goes like:

tanamai makes either fuji or daisy first -> she comes up with the roster index numbers -> she makes the other one (oh no! now theres 18 names that are supposed to come before mame! but she never realised or just didnt update her roster)

(also i think its fairly safe to assume that any students with 1 word names, that either is their entire name or that's their surname, because a teacher would not be calling a student by first name)

and the heikazu scene.,.. i came there fully expecting to not care at all but they actually made me invested. ran was SOOOO CUTE her excitement directly influenced me to also want to see heiji succeed. heiji asking if the legendary 100 million night view is better than big ben and ran agreeing just to placate him for the sake of her otp 😭

THE STUN GRENADE! the fact that kazuha immediate reaction is to protect heiji ears.... her self sacrificial nature a call back to mermaid island in the most subtle way 🥹🥹🥹 heiji shocked eyes was so cute. and heiji confession speech isnt cringe and is actually cute! shocker! (sorry trauma from heart anniversary lines its so awful im dnfuebdjfjf) devastated such an ideal confession scene was wasted. but its from kazuha trying to save heiji SO FORGIVEN

this movie really play a lot with the crumbs from kendo school tournament arc. heiji-ran friendship makes me want to cry, ran efficiently karate chopping hijiri to make sure theres no distractions for heikazu 🥺😭 ive been convinced on okita's cuteness the past 3 month cuz if the okita fanart boom in my corner of jp twitter but watching it for myself... he really have it bad for heiji LMAO wdym "it's boring if hattori ain't here~" how much did you say this for kaitou kid to catch that its a good trait for an okita disguise. im glad this movie give a good balance of real okita and fake okita, m10 still makes me so sad for having ZERO real hakuba 🥲 kid's dosu e~ is so moeblob

my final review of the movie is this is my no 1 fav conan movie of all time, 2nd place is bride of halloween. i still havent rank anything below that properly. im truly entertained by this movie it got so many characters i care about with a lot of bombastic scenes. as much as i want to say my ultimate fav is m7 and m21, both of them are kinda... slow with all the deduction talk. im here for eye candy after all 😔 mixing kid's energy is doing wonders for the tone of a heiji movie. heiji's presence is also doing wonders for KID as well cuz gosh!!! KID has never emit this much childlike moe blob energy. heiji and conan being the straight man to kid's prank is the dynamic really help to emphasize his whimsical energy

and the final theme i caught; parallelism where hijiri is willing to do anything to protect his father's legacy only for us to find that its all for naught.... now why does this sound familiar 🤔🤔🤔

Piranha: S-BLAST 91, .96 Gal Deco, & Splatana Stamper Nouveau (I could see him using vStamper for Zipcaster and Stamper Nouveau for Toxic Mist interchangeably. Zipcaster for more aggressive up-in-your-face attacks while Spider-man across the stage and toxic mist could be like his farts to slow down enemies and strike them down with a charged slash.)

Snake: Splatterscope CAM-O, Jet Squelcher COB-R, and Custom E-Liter 4K Scope (My hc is that Snake is a charger/sniper main with a pocket cobra Jet. He would want to stay away from fray and fight from afar. And Jet Squelcher, while being a shooter, can shoot from long range.)

Wolf: N-ZAP 85, Enperry Splat Dualies, and Undercover Brella (Usual spy, heist themed weapons. Perfect weapons for him. Tacticooler from Zap to support his gang because Wolf’s a very supportive guy plus gray Zap comes close to an actual gun aesthetically, he can shine using his maneuver abilities with the Enperry’s dodge rolls and Splashdown as get-off-me attack. Undercover because of Kingsman plus the JP name for the weapon is called Spy Gadget. He can sneakily place ink mines and unsuspecting enemies would fall trap to them causing the mines to explode and mark them. Reefslider as a call back to his skills as professional getaway driver.)
