In a surprise move of "huh?" and "now?" and "really?" and "why?", Cup Noodle just put out a new commercial based on El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron... the obscure PS3/360 game from nearly 15 years ago.
(A history below...)
At E3 2010, a peculiar game trailer dropped, free from either Sony or Microsoft's big stage shows. It featured vague narration from a snazzily-dressed deep-voiced man, and gladiator combat from a seemingly airheaded prettyboy protagonist. It was barely comprehensible, but I suppose that was also its appeal...
youtube
For reasons beyond my comprehension, this trailer absolutely took off in Japan's internet culture, becoming a huge meme on Nicovideo, spawning numerous parody and remix videos.
This one was an old fave of mine, mashing up the trailer with a famous Puyo Puyo song. Also it loops endlessly, so you never have to stop watching.
There was even a goofy no-budget live-action remake of the trailer that's hit 1.5 million views...
El Shaddai eventually launched the following year in 2011. However, despite its early meme status, the game flew criminally under the radar. While it wasn't exactly a flop, and reviewed reasonably well, it just didn't quite leave the impact it probably should've.
Which is a shame, because it was one of the few genuinely ~artfully crafted~ big-shelf games for the big-boy consoles of the era. It donned a painterly style, using pseudo-cel-shading with pastel colors and a watercolor look. The story is esoteric, the environments are abstract. And it even dared to be a bit flamboyant! Wow.
It was essentially the polar opposite of where gaming culture was at the time. And as someone who was completely disillusioned with the direction games were going in that generation, it was one of the few games I really wished I could play. But unfortunately I couldn't...
...UNTIL...!!!
In 2021, a strange miracle happened. A surprise remaster of the game launched on Steam. It too seems to have flown under the radar. But it's still there, still buyable, still playable. And the port seems to be good.
A Switch version also exists if you're so inclined.
So do y'wanna talk about "hidden gems"?? Here's your PS3/360 hidden gem!! And it's available right now, on modern platforms, running well, with no strings attached!
Did I mention it was directed by a character designer who worked on Okami and Devil May Cry? Does that pique your interest yet??
Let's right the wrongs of the past!! It's finally El Shaddai's time to shine!! MONDAI NAI!!!

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron HD Remaster for Switch launches April 28, 2024
Gematsu Source
Tumblr media
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron HD Remaster will launch for Switch on April 28, 2024, publisher Rainy Frog and developer crim announced.
In Japan, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron HD Remaster will be available both physically for 4,950 yen and digitally for 3,850 yen. A physical deluxe edition will also be available for 8,250 yen, which includes a drama CD and drama CD script.
Here is an overview of the game, via crim:
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron, originally released in 2011, is a unique third-person action adventure filled with a deeply artistic world-building, outstanding aesthetics and thrilling battles. Experience an incredible mix of 2D-like platformer action and a colorful 3D world in an exceptional setting.
An Ever-changing Endless Visual Experience
El Shaddai‘s artistic setting aims to provide a canvas-like world that changes in an organic way as long as you progress your adventure. The world keeps changing constantly in the most creative and innovative ways, perhaps even nostalgic. Easy to play, hard to master. You’ll only have four buttons: jump, attack, guard and weapon stealing. But this simple way of proceeding is deeper than one can expect. There is no need of manuals or walkthroughs to get into the game, but if anyone is ready to deepen into the mechanics, the game will offer a profound, precise and rewarding timing-based action experience. The motto of El Shaddai’s gameplay always was to be “easy but profound”. Many of the game’s mechanics such as the offense-defense systems were carefully created to provide the best possible game feel. The game received the “Future Game of the Show” award in the Tokyo Game Show 2010 and the script, noting some of the characters lines, got a gold mention on the Internet Buzzword Awards 2010 as well. The original aesthetics, the uniqueness of its concept and the feeling of being ahead its time (2011) were widely discussed on the international media.
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron HD Remaster is currently available for PC via Steam.

When your team is fucking weirdos, hated by the fandoms, with half of them involved in gay drama and you're just trying to stay in your lane...
Aka my collection of problematic Metafaves
I thought about actually drawing them all, but i dont think i would ever manage...
Legend under the Cut (links to character pages provided, open at own risk for spoilers)
Tumblr media
Enoch (Metatron) from El Shaddai Ascencion of the Metatron (both video game and tie in Mangas, the game is fucking underappreciated!)
Metatron from Dogma (he is sarcastic baby)
Metatron from Good Omens (TV Series) (innocent until proven guilty, the book one looked kinda like #15)
Metatron from Supernatural (unfortunately proven guilty, because they copied #9's homework)
Metatron from 7 Heavenly Virtues Anime ("Nanatsu no Bitoku" kinda NSFW, big tiddy anime )
Metatron from Shin Megami Tensei video game series (obligatory, cause first mayor video game appearance)
Metatron (Enoch, Sean Christian) from Devils and Realists Manga ( "Makai Ouji" sad little meow meow, reminder to always read job descriptions )
Metatron from Omniscient Readers Viewpoint Webnovel (I have not collected enough spoons to read all of it)
Metatron (Enoch) from His Dark Materials Novels (+TV) (If you think his ego is big, you should see his dick. He's thinking with it. )
Metatron from Dear Door Webtoon Manhwa (Yeah... I'm not gonna link this one. The story and art is amazing, but there is also so much gore and even more hardcore gay sex in like every single chapter. Google it and read it yourself, but... Dead Dove, do not eat - unless you're into that or are a fast scroller )
Metatron from Spawn Comic Series (She's so pretty, and the Spawn comics are just visually cool)
Metatron (one of several forms) from the Puzzle&Dragon Games (They are so pretty... acursed Gatcha games!)
Metatron from Angel Sanctuary (nostalgia, he did nothing wrong, baby with evil twin)
Metatron from Dating Game Miraclr (He has red hair and his Storyline is... just Metatron, just Metatron...)
Metatron ( Eternity (Earth-TRN781) ) from the Marvel Comics (Obligatory cause marvel is everywhere and I put the Spawn one)
Im aware there's some more in various other gatcha games but those usually dont have any story to them... and the other animes, im not yet familar with (or role is too minor)...
Collection is still open if anyone has some Metatron's to drop off...

So there's two video games I've been trying to remember for decades, in the case of one and 12 years for the other. And YouTube just dropped a vid about the 12 year on me today.

Two New Old Fics
After 84 years, Adult Fanfiction resurfaced, and by combing through my reactivated account, I found two old-ish explicit fanfics that I never posted on AO3! (probably because when I joined AO3, AFF dot net was already pretty dead so I based my fic uploads on what lived on my FF dot net account at the time)
Once AO3 is back online I'll be uploading both. One is El Shaddai and the other, Devil May Cry 1 (and probably my oldest explicit DMC fic to boot).
