so i had an idea based on a horror manga i read forever ago
(not sure what to call this)
Emi Saito, a college student, lives a normal life with her nurse aunt and older sister, Kami... Until Kami, a famed geneticist, dissapears. A few months after, a horrible, unbelievable outbreak occurs;
All of Japan's regional and corporate mascots have become real, living beings, and many of them have a thirst for human blood.
Panic and terror rule the streets as hundreds of adorable (and not so adorable) mascots swarm and kill any human they come across. While there seem to be a few exceptions, most of the mascots are maliciously murderous. There doesn't seem to be a way to kill them either. Bullets, fire, acid, explosives...nothing fazes them. They regenerate at super speeds and bounce back seemingly no matter what.
Emi witnesses her aunt die trying to protect the patients at her clinic.
With no one left to turn to, Emi flees the city on her own, somehow managing to dodge the many mascots that prowl the streets. She makes her way to the countryside, attempting to find shelter or survivors. Eventually she's cornered by a small pack of wandering mascots, but just before they can take a bite out of her, she's saved by a rough-looking dog mascot.
He introduces himself as Uzu, the mascot of a small seaside fishing village. He asks Emi if she can cook, she says yes, and he whisks her (somewhat unwillingly) away to the village to be his lil' housewife- I mean maid! Housemaid!
Things are tentatively peaceful for the two for a while. Uzu is happy to have company-whohappentobereallycute-who can cook fish, and Emi is just happy to be alive and safe (even if her roomie is a bit terrifying).
Until some mail arrives for Emi. Her sister is alive, and is calling her to return home.
Uzu, who's come to care deeply for Emi (far beyond his stomach) doesn't trust the letter, and urges her to stay with him. They've built a good life here, he reasons, why rock the boat? But Emi insists. Her sister might still be alive, she has to know for sure. Uzu relents. He'll go with her, ever loyal, and kinda wanting to see the city for himself.
So they go, making their way across the countryside, fighting mascots and rogue humans along the way. When they get to the city, it lies mostly empty, ravaged and bloodied by the mad mascots. Emi, remembering her time before meeting Uzu, is now a bit reluctant.

NieR Orchestra Concert 12024 [the end of data] (London, 15/2/2024)
Tumblr media
NieR concert was incredible just as expected. Honestly, from the moment I got there - the cosplayers, the general atmosphere, it was just a good place to be surrounded by NieR nerds lmao. So many people happy to chat with the stranger next to them, kind of a con vibe.
Tumblr media
But of course we were there for the music! And it was fuckin amazing. The emi evans/j'nique nicole duets😭These were special orchestral arrangements specifically for this concert, and the way the sound of the orchestra fills the space, how you can see a phrase physically ripple across the orchestra... I don't get to go to a lot of concerts but I really should try to go more often, because it's something else to hear orchestral music.
below: further comments on the concert, lots of cosplay photos.
The multimedia elements also worked really well - every piece was accompanied with backing videos using either demosceney abstract visuals or images from the games, along with text that told a short story over the course of the concert, with some segments voice acted by the English voices of 2B and 9S (Kira Buckland and Kyle McCarley, who have previously made their own performances of the original Japan-only concert readings). I won't spoil the story in this post since there are still concerts to come, but it was... not that substantial I'll admit, but sweet, and a nice framing device to create a flow through the songs and various moments from the games.
Hearing J'nique Nicole's voice live though, that was incredible. Emi Evans was there just as last time, and just as amazing as always - but this time we had both of them on stage together, and it was absolutely sublime. We all went wild. They performed duets in several songs, with the standouts naturally being A Beautiful Song, Ashes of Dreams, and of course Weight of the World. I think we all thought that was the end because we gave it a standing ovation but then Emi came back out to perform Kainé. After that we got into the groove of standing up and stood up again like three more times lol.
Tumblr media
Yoko Taro and Yosuke Saito showed up at the end and made a bunch of rapidfire jokes in Japanese that the translator couldn't keep up with, bless her. But we got to give them like the fourth standing ovation of the night, and made a lot of noise when Yoko Taro suggested it would persuade the president of Squeenix to fund a sequel. I'm sure they appreciated it lmao. I think it must be so weird for Yoko Taro to go from someone with a career of niche, unsuccessful games to being internationally renowned to the point that a massive auditorium full of people in multiple countries will go absolutely nuts just to hear him speak a language we mostly don't speak.
Good mix of people who were at a NieR concert for the first time and people who'd been to the last one. There was a guy near me who had apparently been to the Berlin concert just a few days before, and snagged a ticket for this one literally yesterday just to get it again with better acoustics. I respect it lol. Everyone I spoke to was remarkably friendly - last time I went to one of these things I felt really nervous about approaching anyone but it seems I've gotten better about that kind of thing in the last few years. Anyway, people had come from all over - I chatted with a pair of Americans from Boston all the way down the merch line.
Here are some pictures, mostly of cosplayers. I am still getting used to shooting with the DSLR my friend gave me, so not all of these came out perfectly steady and some of them the exposure wasn't right,, but there are some nice ones in here...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
bokeeeeehhhhhhhhh... I spoke a bit to the owner of this 9S doll. Her mum was there too, and it turns out she's a haberdasher who makes cosplays for her daughters and has now done over 70. That's a legendary mum right there.
Tumblr media
The 9S cosplayer here gave me his instagram. he's a pro photographer so I feel a little embarassed at the quality of the photos I took of him ^^'
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got some merch too, since I understand it's the main way events like this support themselves.
Tumblr media
That Kainé thing isn't a print, it's a vinyl record with a few arrangements of Kainé. Though I was totally prepared to buy it as a print because it's a lovely drawing. I don't actually own a record player, but one day I'll surely listen to it ^^'
I was too fatigued to make a cosplay this time, but I'm sure there will be another concert and next time, for sure, I will go as Devola or Popola. Unless Yoko Taro comes up with another redhead character in the meantime lmao.

Live Audience Ranking
Note: this only includes the LIVE audience of the performances in ep3+4, plus the additional 3,000 bonus votes. Whoever won out of the two groups that performed the song got 3,000 bonus votes.
Second note: These are essentially useless rankings as they weren't actual fan votes submitted online/through mobile.
Third note: Tumblr hates ties in lists. Use the vote count to determine a tie. Most everything from rank 36 onward is a tie.

The Warm-Up 3: Pro Wrestling GRIND “Masters Of Reality”- 4/28/2023
“The Human Monster Truck” Perry Von Vicious (7-7) vs. Bryce Donovan (0-0) Perry Last 3: Derek Neal d. Perry Von Vicious - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Perry Von Vicious d. Ryan Galeone - Overkill 2023 - 2/24/2023 Perry Von Vicious d. WARHORSE - All We Are - 12/31/2022 Bryce Last 3: Shook Crew d. Mane Event - Celebration Day - 10/28/2022 Rip & WARHORSE d. Shook Crew - Fear Of The Dark - 9/4/2022 Jay Freddie & The Saito Brothers d. Shook Crew & Dante Drago - Come & Get It - 5/27/2022 Just as Bobby Orlando vs Ryan Mooney will be a clash of speed kings, Bryce Donovan vs Perry Von Vicious is a test of all-rounded might.  Both stand at well over 6 feet and yet are not afraid to take to the skies or grit their teeth and slug it out.  Perry looks to avenge a Rip Byson singles loss to Bryce from Blitzkrieg Pro years back, while Bryce would make a thunderous statement in taking down a Day 1 GRINDer in his singles debut. Will Perry take his first step back towards Grand Championship contention?  Can Bryce topple the Human Monster Truck or will Perry roar to victory?! “Uptown” Andy Brown (2-2) vs. Griffin McCoy (0-0) Andy Last 3: Andy Brown d. Brandon Williams - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Andy Brown d. Danny Miles - Overkill 2023 - 2/24/2023 Perry Von Vicious d. Andy Brown - Sinister Urge - 12/2/2022 Rising stars in the tri-state area set for a first-time ever collision as the surging Andy Brown takes on the debuting Griffin McCoy.  Both west coast imports are well-rounded and battle-tested strikers that can shift phases by the second.  Can Big Griff capture the ever-elusive debut GRIND victory or will Andy Brown make it 3 in a row and possibly cement himself as the next GRIND Grand Championship contender? “God Queen” Delmi Exo (6-3) vs. “Courageous” Christina Marie (0-0) Delmi Last 3: B3CCA d. Delmi Exo - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Delmi Exo d. Jac St. Jean - Overkill 2023 - 2/24/2023 Emi Sakura d. Delmi Exo - All We Are - 12/31/2022 “The God Queen” Delmi Exo welcomes a new gladiatrix to the Emerald Ring in the form of the powerful “Courageous” Christina Marie.  Christina has competed all across the Northeast and is no stranger to high-pressure debuts, while Delmi looks to bounce back from a loss to International Pop Sensation B3CCA and rise to the top 5 of the GRIND Singles Rankings.  Will Christina succeed where so many other warriors have failed and notch a successful debut against the matriarch of GRIND?  Or will the Rise of the God Queen continue?! “The Goatest Of All Time” Bobby Orlando (0-0) vs. “Rabid” Ryan Mooney (6-4) Bobby Last 3:  Shook Crew d. Mane Event - Celebration Day - 10/28/2022 Rip & WARHORSE d. Shook Crew - Fear Of The Dark - 9/4/2022 Jay Freddie & The Saito Brothers d. Shook Crew & Dante Drago - Come & Get It - 5/27/2022 Mooney Last 3:  Ryan Mooney d. Ichiban - Overkill 2023 - 2/24/2023 Anthony Henry d. Ryan Mooney - All We Are - 12/31/2022 Jay Freddie d. Ryan Mooney - Electric Crown - 9/30/2022 Tri-state junior gods collide as one of the longest reigning singles champions in New England wrestling history in Bobby Orlando makes his singles debut against GRIND mainstay “The Rabid Honey Badger” Ryan Mooney!  Mooney came very close to tasting singles gold of his own in the Emerald 12, beating Alec Price and Rip Byson before falling to Jay Freddie in the semifinals, and looks to build on his recent victory over Ichiban.  Will the Shook Crew go 2 for 2 in singles debuts?  Is The GOATest Of All Time on the cusp of starting another legendary singles tear?! Or will Ryan Mooney make it two straight in his neverending quest to mark GRIND as Honey Badger Territory?! A-GAME/SKYROS II “Moonlight Son” Mike Skyros (3-3) vs. “A-Game” Joseph Alexander (3-4) Skyros Last 3: Mike Skyros d. Ryan Clancy - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Mane Event d. Moonlight Hornets - Overkill 2023 - 2/24/2023 Mike Skyros d. JD Drake - All We Are - 12/31/2022 A-Game Last 3: Joseph Alexander d. Rip Byson - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Manders d. Joseph Alexander - Sinister Urge - 12/2/2022 Joseph Alexander d. Nolo Kitano - Celebration Day - 10/28/2022 Our first of two rematches on the evening is from July 2022 at “Doctor Doctor,” a night where Joseph Alexander captured his first victory at GRIND at the expense of the at-the-time also-winless Mike Skyros.  This time around, this is a Mike Skyros who has since found victory in 2 of his last 3 contests, and notably 3 of his last 3 singles contests.  A-Game has also been victorious in 2 of his last 3 contests, and now both combatants are on the cusp of Grand Championship contention.  Who walks out the winner in A-Game/Skyros II?! STRAP MATCH “Iron” Rip Byson (8-4-1) vs. “King’s Road Slayer” Derek Neal (1-0-1) Rip Last 3: Joseph Alexander d. Rip Byson - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Rip Byson d. ZPB - Overkill 2023 - 2/24/2023 Gary Jay d. Rip Byson - All We Are - 12/31/2022 Derek Last 2:  Derek Neal d. Perry Von Vicious - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Derek Neal nc. Rip Byson - Come & Get It - 5/27/2022 The two most decorated Strap Match participants going today lock horns with an endless amount of bad blood between them.  Just as Perry looks to avenge a Ripper loss to Bryce Donovan from Blitzkrieg Pro years ago, Ripper looks to avenge Perry’s loss to Derek Neal last time around at Stiff Upper Lip.  This only stokes the fire that started at Come & Get It nearly a year ago when the first singles bout between The King’s Road Slayer and Easthampton’s Iron Horse went to a no-contest after the referee attempted to assert some order and received a pair of fists for his trouble.  Who will survive what is certain to be one of the most ferocious battles in GRIND history?! GRIND GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP (V5) Anthony Henry (3-0) vs. “Blue Thunder” Jay Freddie (12-1) (c) Henry Last 3:  Anthony Henry d. Ryan Mooney - All We Are - 12/31/2022 Anthony Henry d. Jinpachi Nezu and Mieko Harada in Ran (Akira Kurosawa, 1985) Cast: Tatsuya Nakadai, Akira Terao, Jinpachi Nezu, Daisuke Ryo, Mieko Harada, Yoshiko Miyazaki, Hisashi Igawa, Pîtâ, Masayuki Yui. Screenplay: Akira Kurosawa, Hideo Oguni, Masato Ide, based on a play by William Shakespeare. Cinematography: Asakazu Nakai, Takao Saito, Shoji Ueda. Production design: Shinobu Muraki, Yoshiro Muraki. Film editing: Akira Kurosawa. Music: Toru Takemitsu. Costume design: Emi Wada. Lavish in color and pattern, Ran may be Akira Kurosawa's most pictorial film, to the point that the images and costumes and sets sometimes threaten to overwhelm the human drama at its core. This is Kurosawa's second effort at translating a Shakespeare play into medieval Japanese terms, and I prefer his adaptation of Macbeth, the 1957 Throne of Blood, to this reworking of King Lear. It seems to me that in Ran, Kurosawa stumbles over the analogous figures from Shakespeare in ways that he doesn't in his earlier film. Turning Lear's daughters into Hidetora's sons robs much of the delicacy and painful sadness of the Shakespeare play, especially in the final reunion of Lear and Cordelia. And King Lear is a more complex play than Macbeth, with its intricate subplot involving Gloucester and his sons, and the multiple intrigues of the households of Goneril and Regan. Kurosawa has pared down and fused some of these secondary stories, but he still loses sight at times of his central figure, the Lear analog, Lord Hidetora. Tatsuya Nakadai is unquestionably one of the world's great film actors, but he's too sturdy a figure for the enfeebled Hidetora, and the stylized old-age makeup often hides his features -- except for the great, glaring eyes. There are grand things, however, in the film, including a wonderfully villainous performance by Mieko Harada as the Lady Kaede, and a curiously effective Fool, performed by the androgynous actor-dancer known as Pîtâ.

When a game is over and all hidden things have been found, what is there left to do? Move on. That's what you would have liked to have done after finishing the disappointing secret ending of a popular otome game. But when the story is over, and all things were said and done, you find yourself trapped in that very game. Faced with the task to keep everyone alive, can you make it to the end without falling in love?
Long read ahead
Chapter Thirteen
New Plan Acquired
Owlishly, you blinked back in response.
“A-ah, uhm, I’m fine, partner…” Internally, you were kicking yourself for being so awkward and forgetting her name. She had gone out of the way to reintroduce herself last Monday and now you’ve gone and forgotten it already, but in hindsight you had so much going on that week who could really blame you. Thankfully not her.
With a sweet, understanding giggle she kindly said, “You forgot my name again, didn’t you?”
At her words you hung your head and walked the few steps to stand behind your station, all the while saying, “I’m so sorry about that. I know you already told me it but then so much happened last week, and I hadn’t had the time to commit it to memory yet, and–well…” Even though the plain girl clearly didn’t seem bothered by the fact, your own mortification about forgetting your lab partner's name caused you to bashfully ramble on.
“Hey, don’t stress about it. I don’t blame you at all, especially not after everything that you went through.” She quickly waved away your concerns, her hair that was tied up in a ponytail wishing behind her head. “My name is Nakano Emi,–be sure to remember it this time.” she playfully added, lightly teasing you.
“Right!” you exclaimed, showing your determination to remember her name, which in turn stifles another laugh from her.
“But, of course, you can just call me Emi-chan.”
Before you know it the Home Econ teacher, Saito-sensei, enters the classroom and almost immediately starts talking about the switch in partners. The good mood you developed from talking with Nakano quickly washed away and was instead replaced with the same sense of dread that you felt earlier.
“Alright class, as I’m sure many of you already know, Makino-san is no longer with us,”
‘What a crude way to put it, teach.’
“With her absences, I will need to rearrange a few of you so that things are even again, which shouldn’t be too difficult. Suzuki-san,” aforementioned boy looked up at the sound of his name, “You will be partnering up with Kobayashi-san from now on.”
“Yes, sensei,” he obediently replied, not that he had much of a choice anyways. He seemed to already know who she was as his gaze immediately turned to look over at her, sending a friendly smile in her direction.
You couldn’t help the furrow of your brows or the slight grimace that graced your face as you watched Suzuki move from his old station over to Yuki’s. Of course they seemed to get along just fine, an observation you made as you couldn’t help but to watch them as the teacher went through the class. But it seems you weren’t the only one interested in watching their interactions.
When you finally decided that you should probably be paying attention to class, you turned to inquire about something with Emi but stopped when you noticed her eyes trained on the two people who have been giving you the most grief as of late.
‘Huh? Why is she staring at them so intently?’ Looking between her and the two across the room, you did a few double takes trying to figure out what it was that caught and kept her attention. ‘No, wait. It’s not the two of them that she’s staring at but rather–’
“You like Suzuki-kun?” you question out loud without even meaning to.
“Eh?” she quickly snapped her head to face you. “EHHh!” she loudly exclaimed, face flushing a bright red.
“Settle down over there! Do not interrupt my class!”
“Y-yes, Saito-sensei!” Emi bashfully said, bowing and apologizing profusely. When the moment passed, and everyone went back to what they were doing, Emi turned back to you still with a flushed face. “Are you crazy, L/n-san!” she stiffly whispered. “Me? Like Suzuki-kun? T-that’s absolutely absurd! Sure, he and I have been friends for a few years now, and, sure, I can't help but admire that sparkle in his eyes whenever he talks about something he’s passionate about. That doesn’t mean I like-like him or anything! We’re just friends after all. Haha, aha, haaa…” There was a moment of brief silence before Emi gently slapped her hands over her face and murmured saying, “Is it that obvious?”
“What? Noo–I had to look really close to notice,” you stammered out, trying not to embarrass her any further..
Emi only sighed and slumped behind your station slightly. “It’s okay, you don’t have to spare my feelings. I know I’m obvious–to everyone but him it seems,” she said forlornly with a sigh, dragging her attention back over to Suzuki. To her surprise, he was already looking over at her direction, gazing at her with obvious concern. Startled by this, Emi quickly turned her head away and began to fiddle with the appliances on our station table, unaware of Suzuki’s expression whose brows furrowed deeper with added worry from her reaction.
‘So Emi likes Suzuki, and Suzuki clearly cares about her, but he will eventually fall for Yuki before asking her out…’ Slowly the figurative gears in your head started to turn as a plan slowly started to formulate in your mind. ‘If Suzuki goes out with Emi instead–Akui wouldn't have a reason to kill him!’
“That’s it!” you excitedly exclaimed and clapped your hands together.
“Hm? What’s ‘it’, Ln-chan?”
You couldn’t help but smile with glee as you turned and clasped your hands over Emi’s own, the feeling of both relief and joy at finally having a solid plan to keep Suzuki alive made you more bubbly than usual. “I’m going to set you up with Suzuki-kun,” you beamed with determination.
“Eh… EHHH!”
“What did I say about interrupting the class!”
“Sorry, Saito-sensei!”
It took a moment for Emi to settle down again, once more she was completely flustered. “Set us up? L/n-chan, there’s no way that’s possible! He only sees me as a friend, and, anyways, I don’t think I could ever have the courage to tell him how I feel–he’ll probably end up rejecting me anyways…” she sputtered out before trailing off near the end in a sad tone. Clearly, she lacked confidence in herself.
‘She and I aren’t really that close, so I might come off as intruding but even so–’ you began to think. “Emi-chan, you won’t know how he truly feels unless you see for yourself. If you let your fears stop you from putting yourself out there then you’ll never know what could have been” ‘This is the best shot that I have to keep Suzuki alive, and there is too much at stake if I don't take this opportunity!’
Emi stared at you with a type of wonder and admiration in her eyes. “Okay, I’ll do it!” she said with a fierce determination. A determination that lasted all but two seconds before she was back to slouching into herself again. “Nope, I don’t think I can do it…”
‘Well, I knew it wouldn’t be that easy,’ you think to yourself with a slight sweat-drop. ‘I’ve got a lot of work to do this week, and it starts with step one…’
“Hey Mom–no, nothings wrong–I was just wondering if I can stay after school with some friends. I know, I know, you don’t want me to wander around alone–but Kobayashi-chan will be there and she promised that she would keep a careful eye on me,” you urged your mother over the phone while nodding over to Yuki, who gave you a firm thumbs up. “Yeah, don’t worry–Kobayashi-chan and Akui-kun will be walking me home… yes… yes, I understand… okay, love you too.”
There was a brief pause as you hung up the phone, leaving Yuki and Akui–mostly Yuki–in a type of anticipation.
“Well? What did she say?” Yuki finally spoke up after not being able to take the silence any longer.
“Well…” you trailed off, “she’s still worried about me walking around, but, because my Dad works late, I’m free to stay late today as long as I stick with you guys, and I can’t be home later than six o’clock,” you went on with a blithe smile.
At your words, Yuki beamed with her own excitement. “Yay! Now we can look at more clubs,” she cheered. “Which is perfect because you and I really need to make a decision soon, which reminds me–Akui-kun,” she swiftly turned to face said boy, “Are you sure it’s okay for you to keep missing practice to hang with us? I don’t want you to get in trouble.”
“Don’t worry about me. I’m good as long as I go into at least one practice a week, besides it’s not like I’m in the starting line up anyways,” the brunette boy waved off her concerns with his simple explanation.
“Well if you say so, but don’t come crying to me if you end up kicked off the team,” Yuki cheekily remarked, already making her way to the gyms. It was already decided that you three would check out the sports clubs next.
You were actually surprised to hear from Yuki that she didn’t explore the rest of the clubs last week like originally planned; she didn’t want to do it without you there apparently. Though a part of you felt concerned with how close Yuki and yourself were perceived to be, you’ll eventually have to make some distance from her.
‘She needs other friends besides me,’ you began to mull over. ‘Yuki seems really clingy right now, and if it looks like Yuki is wanting to spend too much of her time with me then Akui might try and get rid of me just because of that fact. But if she had a few other platonic friends that she could hang out with, Akui won’t think I’m trying to steal all of her attention, which brings me back to the first step of my plan…’
“–Right, I’ve bever played, but I heard tennis is pretty fun.” It seems you’ve chimed back into the conversation right in the middle of Yuki’s speech.
“Sure, but can you even stay committed enough to stick to it? Don’t be offended, but you’re kind of all over the place, Yuki-chan,” Akui lightly bantered back in response.
“You’re one to talk–weren’t you just saying that ‘I’m good as long as I go to at least one practice a week,’” Yuki said playfully mimicking a deep voice.
After taking in a hesitant breath, you injected yourself into the conversation saying, “Uh–Kobayashi-chan–” the two paused their talk and slowed down, looking over at you, “you sit with Suzuki-kun, in Home Econ, now, right?” you asked. “What can you tell me about him?” you questioned before she could respond, noting how Akui tensed up slightly with an almost dark expression before he went back to a calm neutral.
“Suzuki-kun? Well, not much. I mean, this was my first time talking to him, but he seems nice,” she said, sounding almost hopeful.
‘Was she looking to get close to him? I need to shut that down.’
“Like, he was really helpful and super easy to talk to. Plus it was fun not having to do everything by myself now that I have a partner. But why do you ask?”
“Actually I made a new friend today, during Home Econ, well her name is Nakano Emi, and she really likes Suzuki but is too shy to ask him out herself, so I figured I could help her try and get him to notice her, and since you’re lab partners with him I was hoping you could sorta be like the inside-woman,” you excitedly rambled with a hopeful expression.
Yuki’s eyes seemed to widen as her mouth spread into a wide, toothy grin, matching your own excitement. “Aww! That would be so cool, and fun, and-and–ehe!” In her excitement, Yuki rushed up to you and interlocked your fingers together and began to enthusiastically wave them around but was also careful with your cast bound hand. “You’re such a kind person! Helping a friend win over with the person they love; I would love to help you,” she said with an energetic air around her. “This is so exciting, you definitely have to introduce me to her sometimes so that way I can better help!”
Even though you didn’t want to damper the happy mood that Yuki developed with her cheerful excitement, you couldn’t help the cold chill that ran down your spin, and you knew exactly where it was coming from. Standing over to the side, Akui just stood by and was staring at your interlocked hands with an intense blank look. ‘Always the buzz kill I see. This is why I want Yuki to befriend Emi, but until then I can’t get too friendly, at least until I can figure out a way to get him to show Yuki his true colors without endangering anyone. Luckily I have a plan for him too until then.’
“Akui-kun, I’ll be needing your help too,” you said, letting go of one of Yuki’s hands and reached out to him.
“Me? What’ll you need my help for?” Akui asked.
“A lot actually. For starters as a boy you could talk to him about what he might like in a girl without seeming interested in him,” you quickly said. “I mean, if it was me I’d think a boy who asked me what kind of guys I like was somewhat interested in me, so Yuki can’t ask those questions.”
“Ah, that’s true! I’m sure there’s only so much a guy would be willing to tell me because I’m a girl, but if Minato-kun was to befriend him then we could learn more information,” Yuki said, also reaching out to Akui. “Come on, team up with us!”
While he did seem hesitant to join in on this idea, probably because it seemed a bit childish and he would have to spend time with more people besides Yuki, but he couldn’t say no to her expecting face, so he grabbed ahold of her left hand and interlocked their fingers.
“Okay, fine. I’ll play along with your ridiculous antics, but only because you asked me to, Yuki-chan,” he responded with a light blush on his face.
Happy by his response, Yuki grinned widely and said, “See, that’s why you’re such a great friend!” It seems the subtle romantic hints that Akui gave went over her head.
“Of course, that’s what I’m here for,” he said after a small sigh. “So, L/n-san, what’s your plan?” Akui asked you.
“Well we can’t do much today because Emi’s mom is already expecting her home for something. Believe me, I already asked if she could stay late today so that I could introduce you guys but things didn’t pan out that way,” you began to explain. “So we can just focus back on our club investigation until tomorrow.”
“Okay, that sounds good. I can’t wait to meet her though!” Yuki cheerfully exclaimed. “I’m still not sure what club to join anyways, and if I can’t decide soon then I might just join a cram school or check out the Judo gym they have here.”
You tilted your head. “Have none of them really caught your interest, Kobayashi-chan? I’d figured you’d have fun regardless of what it was,” you remarked as the three of you continued walking along to the gyms.
“I feel like I definitely could but none of them felt right, you know?” Yuki replied with a shrug of her shoulders from her place in between Akui and yourself. You all were still holding hands as you walked, mostly due to Yuki as she held a slightly tight grip swinging your hands back and forth. Akui on her left and you on her right.
“Well you’re so energetic, so a sports club might be best for you,” you advice.
“See! That’s what I was telling Minato-kun, but he said–”
In a way, it felt nice spending the afternoon doing nothing but chatting casually and exploring the different sports clubs your school had to offer. Since coming to this world there had hardly been a moment where the plot wasn’t weighing on your mind, the only other moment you could think of being when you hung out with them that Saturday, but knowing that you won’t have to deal with some crazed bully this week put you at ease, even more so now that you have an actual plan to save Suzuki; something that you have been stressing over the last few days.
‘This might be difficult to pull off in less than a week, but as long as Suzuki doesn’t think of Yuki in any romantic light then it’ll be fine. Besides, even if he does ask her out, Yuki will definitely say no now that she knows a friend of mine has a crush on him,’ you think to yourself as you change out of your indoor shoes alongside Akui and Yuki, it was already time to go home. ‘And it’s not like I’m actually going to let those two participate in this plan more than they need to, I just need them to feel like they are. Regardless, I am confident in my matchmaking abilities, I even managed to get Ashleigh with her current boyfriend.’ You halted your movements. ‘Right, Ashleigh. I’ve barely thought about her since coming here. I wonder how she’s…’
“Hey, L/n-chan,” Yuki suddenly spoke up, pulling you out of your thoughts.
“Yes, Kobayashi-chan?” you replied, looking up from your feet.
She didn’t immediately continue, instead choosing to giggle quietly to herself which only grew louder when she looked up to see your confused face. “Sorry, sorry, it’s just I’ve been wondering, are you always this formal, L/n-chan?”
“Huh? What do you mean?” you asked perplexed, standing to your full height.
“It’s nothing, really, but I figured we’d be close enough to call each other by our first names, but you always use my last name which makes me hesitant to use yours, so I guess I was just curious.”
This new revelation threw you into a small panic. ‘Wait, I thought I was using the correct terms of address!’ “O-oh! It’s nothing like that, I’m just not… used to… having close friends…” ‘Of all the excuses I could come up with I had to pick the most pathetic sounding one! I’m not even sure how many friends this world’s version of me had; how can I just spout that out without thinking!?’
“Ah, I see. Don’t worry about that because you have me and Minato-kun now!” Yuki happily said, patting you on the back lightly. “Right, Minato-kun?”
“Of course,” Akui said, stepping up to the two of you.
‘Eek! Yuki is new and doesn’t know me, but Akui knows me from my past here. If what I just said contradicted how the me from here acted then it’ll totally look bad on me.’
“I know how much of a loner L/n-san was before, so I’m glad to see that she’s stepping out of her shell more,” Akui said with a closed-eyed half-smile.
You couldn’t help the twitch of your eyebrow as you tried to hold back your annoyance at Akui’s very subtle jab. ‘Ouch, did I really not have friends here. No one has approached me saying otherwise which is sad, at least it’s convenient for me…’ you thought to yourself.
“Great!” Yuki beamed with a clap of her hands as she tilted her head to the side. “I can just tell this year is going to be amazing now that I have two of my best friends, so let's go home now, Y/n-chan.”
The light of the sunset seemed to hit Yuki’s figure perfectly, giving her this ethereal air of beauty. It was no wonder she had plenty of boys after her heart, with her looks and likable personality. It was too bad that she also had a tendency to attract the wrong kind of guys, and it wasn’t just Akui, who was currently staring at her with a love struck gaze, but two other boys, who you needed to find ways to save, who were scumbags in their own right. While not as bad as Akui, who has them beat out by simply being a love crazed murderer, they weren’t sanguine love interests who would follow Yuki around like a lost puppy. Rather, they were pushy dirtbags who weren’t keen on taking no for an answer. ‘I’ll have to deal with them when the time comes, for now let’s just focus on Suzuki.’
“Alright,” you spoke. “Let’s go, Yuki-chan.”
‘But I will have to touch up on Japanese culture more when I get home…’
A/n: Lately it seems every time I try to an write this story something always comes up and pushes back the publishing day. I meant to post it last weekend but all that week I was busy taking care of my two sick puppies and then when one of them ended up passing away I just lost my motivation for a little while, so here it is now. You guys don't need to feel too bad, sometimes that is how life is and I'm already doing better. The worst part is getting over that he is no longer here and missing his presence in the house but I'm just glad my younger puppy survived. For now, updates will still be sporadic and all over the place as I try and get back into the groove of things. I try not to dwell on the sad things in my life as sadly death has been a common occurrence for my family, I'm just glad I can say it's not something I can ever get used to. But enough with the sad stuff, I like this chapter a lot especially the first half. I finally get to introduce Emi and I feel like you guys will like her character because I know I do. She is super fun to write and I can't wait to write her interactions with Suzuki. Also, I would like to thank everyone for always leaving such kind comments and real helpful advice, so don't ever be afraid to leave a comment telling me what is on your mind because I read them all and I always take into consideration what you have to say. I only ask that you be nice and respectful to me and to others. I hope everyone has a great day and enjoyed reading this chapter. I'll see you in the next update.

Remember Me [Saito x OC] Chapter 16
When the Shinsengumi, accompanied by Ai, got to Osaka-ya, it was silent. Almost eerily so. As the men approached the front of the inn, the sliding door was kicked down and Emi emerged.
“Uh… Emi?” Okita asked, his smile tight.
“What?” she asked. Emi’s kimono was filled with blood-splatter.
Hijikata stepped forward and glared. “What the hell are you doing?”
Emi shrugged. “I taught a thief a lesson.”
“A thief? Don’t tell me…” Ai stared with widened eyes at her sister.
“I found the guy that stole my sword and confronted him,” she answered. Ai smiled wryly. She was already referring to the sword as her sword.
“Did you kill him?” Hijikata asked.
“If I killed him, it wouldn’t be much of a lesson.” Emi buffed her nails against a clean spot on the front of her kimono.
“What exactly did you do?” Ai asked.
“Nothing much.” She tossed an object at their feet. Upon closer inspection they realised it was a man’s arm. It was cut off cleanly, not ripped. Ai imagined Emi had used that sword to do it.
“Miss Yukimura, I cannot condone you acting on your own like this,” Kondo said. Emi arched an eyebrow. Everything about her expression screamed Why would I listen to you?
Emi waited outside with Ai as the Shinsengumi went inside to survey the damage. They emerged some time later with the apprehended ronin. Emi flashed him a toothy grin to which he responded to by visibly shivering.
“K-Keep that monster away from me!” he said. The men dragged him away as Emi began snickering.
“Emi,” Okita approached the girls. “Maybe it’s time you give that back to Hajime?”
“What?” Emi asked. That was the last thing she expected him to say.
“Yeah! Quit being so difficult about it!” Harada chimed in. Emi slowly removed the sword from under her sash and looked at it. Her brows furrowed together as she thought.
“Yes, I think it’s time we returned this sword to its rightful owner,” Kondo said.
“I’m its rightful owner,” Emi said. Kondo sighed. Emi was well aware of the presence behind her, but she didn’t turn around.
“Truthfully, I’m with Emi on this.” Ai turned around. “I’m not sure you deserve this anymore, Saito-san.” Emi kept her back turned. “It was Emi’s yes, but she didn’t just buy this somewhere. She made this. Not commissioned it to be made, but actually made it. Herself.”
Saito turned to Emi, his eyes wide. “You… made it?” Emi didn't respond. “You never told me…” Saito looked at the ground.
"Would it have made a difference if I did?" she asked flatly. She finally turned toward her lover and walked over to him. She stuffed the sword in his hands. “Just take better care of it, okay?” She turned halfway and looked at the other soldiers. “They looked into it, too. They tried to find it before they knew I already had it.”
“Your happiness is this important to Soji and the others. You must be overjoyed. Right, Hajime?” Kondo beamed.
Saito wore a tight expression. “Everyone… Thank you so much.”
Hijikata clicked his tongue. “Why do you always have to sound so formal?”
“Hey, what are you going to do? That’s Hajime for you. He may be stiff as a plank of wood, but I wouldn’t change him for the world,” Okita said.
“Yeah, even I’ve grown to appreciate it. Every group of friends needs an overly serious guy,” Harada added.
“That used to be Toshi, but Hajime set a new precedent,” Kondo laughed.
“Really, though, I mean it. Thank you. From now on… I look forward to continuing to fight alongside all of you,” Saito answered.
“What is this, some kind of formal ceremony? Who actually says things like that? Anyway, I’m glad to hear it. You’re the only decent sparring partner I’ve got, Hajime. Emi usually refuses to fight me.” Okita turned an overly dramatic pout on Emi.
She shrugged. “Ask Ai.”
“I don’t even like fighting,” Ai retorted.
“Don’t feel like you’ve gotta prove yourself to us. Just be you, man.” Harada smiled at Saito.
“I will.”
Emi smiled slightly as well.
“Well then, let’s go home,” Hijikata said. Emi hummed and started walking behind everyone else when Saito grabbed her hand.
“Hajime?” she asked curiously.
“Sorry, but, there’s something Emi and I need to do,” he said.
“There is?” Emi cocked her head to the side.
“Oh-ho! Got a hot date scheduled, have you?” Okita teased. Emi gave him a sarcastic smile and flashed a vulgar gesture.
“What the hell? I thought we’d all go celebrate the return of your sword over drinks!” Harada exclaimed.
“As if you need Saito around to enjoy a drink,” Hijikata retorted.
“Well, I mean, it helps…”
“Let’s let the two of them celebrate however they see fit. Come along, gentlemen, Ai.” Kondo led by example, and the others followed him down the darkened streets.
“There’s some place I’d like to take you,” Saito said.
“What place?” Emi asked.
“You’ll see.” Saito said nothing more as he started walking, pulling Emi along by the hand.
Of all the places for him to take her, the graveyard was the last place she was expecting.
“This is where you wanted to take me?” Emi asked incredulously.
“Yeah. I wanted to come here with you. Together. Last time was just a coincidence, and you were pretty angry…” Saito spoke softly, then crouched down and clasped his hands in prayer. Emi knelt down next to him and did the same. Emi was a demon; she didn’t pray. But she liked to think her father, having been human, could hear her speaking to him, wherever he was. When she’d finished saying what she wanted, she opened her eyes. Saito still had his head bowed. “Shall we go?” When he finally did raise his head, he looked refreshed, as if he’d been relieved of some burden. A smiled spread across Emi’s lips for the first time in a while. Saito smiled back. They were still staring deeply into each other’s eyes when a drop of water fell on Emi’s cheek.
“Hm?” she looked up at the sky. “It’s raining.”
“Is it?” Up until now, rainstorms had triggered intense reactions from Saito. But now, there wasn’t a hint of hurt or worry on his face. “Looks like it’s starting to come down harder. Shall we run for it?” Saito took Emi by the hand. She wrapped her fingers tightly around his as they ran.
They found cover under the awning of a nearby lodge just as it started to pour. Soaked, Emi wrang out her long hair before looking back up to the sky.
“Doesn’t look like it’s going to let up any time soon,” she mused.
“No… Are you cold?” Saito asked.
“A little.” Emi wrapped her arms around herself.
“If we stay out here, you’ll catch a cold. Why don’t we head inside, and rest for a while?” Saito suggested, his eyes kind.
“Demons don’t catch colds, but I won’t say no to some warmth.”
Saito led Emi inside the lodge, where they were shown to a snug, cosy room. “We can stay here for a while.” Saito borrowed some towels from the owners of the lodge so they could dry off.
“Thanks,” she said. Saito turned his back to her, removed his sword, and wiped it down with great care.
“Emi, thank you…” he spoke while keeping his back turned, but Emi could hear the smile in his voice.
“If you lose it again, I’m taking it back for good,” she retorted.
“I’m not talking about the sword.” Saito turned to face her. There was a light shining brightly in his eyes. “Honestly, after everything that happened, I wasn’t sure how I should act around you. But everything your sister said before made it clear to me. Whenever I feel helpless, you’re always there to rescue me.”
“Where is this coming from?” Emi asked, her eyes wide.
“You’re always opening your heart to me. And encouraging me to do the same. It’s the salvation I’ve always needed.”
Emi gasped. “You’re… my salvation, too. Over and over again, you’ve shown me something that I never even knew was missing. All I want is for us to share our feelings. If you feel like you’re able to do that with me, then I’m happy. It makes me feel like we’ve grown a little closer.” She smiled.
“Yeah…? Yeah, we have, haven’t we…” Saito sounded like he was reflecting deeply on Emi’s words. He nodded. “From now on, I won’t hold back. I’ll be completely open. Okay?” Emi didn’t reply as she smiled happily. Saito looked back at her and smiled too. His face drew closer to hers and he pressed his lips to hers in a tender kiss.
“Hajime,” she said softly.
“Hm?”
“Welcome home.”
“What? But we’re…”
“It just feels like I finally have the real Hajime back.”
“Oh. I get it.” Saito paused. “Sorry I kept you waiting so long. And… that I hurt you.” Emi’s eyes fell on the sword, but she said nothing. “I’ll take care of it, I promise.”
Emi hummed. “What were you praying for back at my father’s grave? You had your eyes closed for such a long time.” She tilted her head up to look at him.
“Oh, yeah, about that.” Saito held her close. She could see his cheeks tinged slightly red. “See… I wanted him to know about the decision I’ve made. I know I may not have the right to say this kind of thing to your father, but…” Saito got up, careful to avoid Emi’s gaze, and walked over to open the sliding door. In the twilight, a steady rain continued to fall. “Still going strong…”
“Don’t change the subject.” Emi got up and walked to his side.
“I told him about how, from now on, I want to spend my life with the most important person to me.”
Emi’s eyes widened. “Hajime…”
“You’ve dragged me out of the depths of despair, and held me close ever since. You believed in me, when I had nothing. When I was nothing. And so…” he smiled sheepishly. “Will you stay with me?”
“Of course I will,” Emi answered. With his large hands, he squeezed hers. She took a step closer and buried her face in his chest as he held her close, basking in the warm glow of the joy that they shared.
