In the The First Shadow, George and Betty Are New Characters and Not Characters we Already Know

I have seen a lot of theories go around as to who George and Betty might be, But one thing about those theories always makes me think one thing. Why would they hide names of characters we already know and can assume that are in it due to other characters?

Let me start of with saying that there is nothing wrong with liking the theories. Some of them are cool and do make sense in some way. To me they don’t make sense due to that question I put forward and age discrepancies between the characters put forward and George and Betty.

Now let’s get into the first part. The character ideas.

1.1 George is either Henry or Lonnie

Out of the two, Henry is the most common answer I have seen so we will start with him. A lot of people assume that George Smith is an alias for Henry Creel. A cover up. This does make a bit of sense as in the recently released audition tapes, George has some connection to flickering lights as Betty was able to sense him and also was hiding something during confessional. But there are two things wrong with this theory: age and appearance.

On the casting call, it says that George is 14.

But Henry’s age in the show is stated as being 12 (in the newspaper article). The Duffers are known for not being the best at continuity with little details for characters so this could easily mean nothing but season 4 and this play were probably written at the same time because as stated before, the play will be apart of the series canon. They do not want anything about it to not make sense with anything we have seen already.

This is where we now move onto Lonnie. It has been pointed out that the possible(?) actor for George looks a lot like Lonnie and nothing like Henry (source henrysglock).

This is a more underrated theory. It is a really good one as well but again the issue with age comes up. If George is fourteen, how would he interact with Joyce, a high school senior?

Now it has been hinted at that Lonnie will be in the play by the writers, but not in the place of George. Here’s my theory:

In the synopsis that was released on the day the play was revealed, it states two things about Joyce an Hopper (sorry for bad image quality)

Hopper’s car won’t start and Joyce wants to leave Hawkins. I think that Lonnie is a bit older than Joyce (he’s around 19-20). He makes these promises to her while Hopper is figuring out what’s wrong with his car that he is her way out of Hawkins and tells lies about Hopper. In the process, Joyce falls in love with Lonnie and the same goes for him as well.

Now this does not mean that it’s still possible. Lonnie could be fourteen at the time of events. It would be weird considering the fact that Joyce is around eighteen at the time and I’m a bit weirded out by that idea. But these theories bring me back to the question from the start. Why would they need to hide Lonnie and Henry’s names in a casting call when we already know that they are going to be in it?

By proxy, we know that Lonnie will be in it because Joyce is in it. We know that Henry is in it because he is on the promotional material. We already know these characters. We have seen them already in the show. This means that George is a new character we have never met.

Let’s move on to Betty.

1.2 Betty is Ms. Kelley

I have seen this idea once. Like the other ones it’s good, but go back to the discrepancies. I also have some of my own personal issues with Ms. Kelley theories. I personally think that she is a red herring. Everything about her seems too obvious. The clock key necklace, the clocks everywhere, and many more feel too on the nose.

If you don’t know what a red herring is, here is the definition (look at the highlighted text or #2):

In mysteries, the most obvious suspicious person is never the killer, it always the one you least suspect. The clock stuff is meant to distract you from what is actually going to happen and who is actually responsible.

Also the way I saw this theory gets tied in with how Henry is actually George but since we can disprove it with two things, I think her role if she is in the play could be different. I will explain it after this next section on who George and Betty actually are.

2. Who They Are

Now that we have gone through the theories, who could Betty and George actually be? They aren’t characters we have seen before so who are they? Let me tell you.

The descriptions of Betty and George remind me of two characters: Nancy and Jonathan.

Pale and moody outcast? That’s Jonathan.

Goody two shoes falling for said pale and moody outcast? Sounds like Nancy.

Obviously they cannot be in it since they are not actually alive yet, but the role of Betty and George is like theirs.

Betty is going to be the first person who notices that weird things are going on. Eventually, George gets sucked in and the two work together to figure out what's happening and come to a conclusion. The conclusion being that Henry is behind it. Just like Jonathan and Nancy, a bit of a romance is going to spark between them as it states in Betty's description that she is falling for George.

Now where does Ms. Kelley fit into all this? Well I think that the key-clock necklace she wears around her neck is important. Betty gives it to her for safe keeping and the way that they know each other is through church as Betty would help out I assume. Unwillingly, Ms. Kelley is used by Vecna to find people he can curse as the necklace she wears is connected to the grandfather clock we see used a lot by him.

But what about the stuff with George having powers and being able to see into the mindscape? Well this post from a Twitter thread I saw through my lurking (I don’t have twitter) sums up what I’m thinking:

George could be a target of Henry’s because if George has similarities to Jonathan, he could be the only person who sees Henry’s true character and Henry may or may not like that because it would ruin his plans.

Another idea is that Henry uses George as a human test subject with his powers because so far we have only seen him use them on animals. Henry is not stupid to jump into a plan he wants to work. In the process George gets cursed somehow.

I don’t know exactly how these two ideas would work with what we currently know about the upside down but anything is possible I guess.

Reader pov:

I’m sitting at my desk filling out an after action report for the case we just closed when I hear a door swing open and Rossi walk out.

“Okay I’m so done with reports and I’m sure you all are too, who’s up for a drink? I’m buying the first round!” He walks down to the lift after saying this and we all collectively scramble to put away our things.

“Ugh I’m so happy he saved us from that, our desks are so far away it’s u fair I couldn’t even talk to you.” I hear a familiar voice complain from behind me. I turn around to see my gorgeous girlfriend JJ.

“Agreed, now, let’s go I really need a drink.” She giggled at my response and clasped my hand in her own and we headed out the bau with the rest of the team.

Time skip to when they’re at the bar:

JJ pov:

“SHOTS OMG LETS DO SHOTS!” I hear Penelope yell over the loud music.

“Ooh yeah let’s do shots!” I hear Emily respond to her. They both head off to the bar to go get their respective drink while I stay seated still nursing my cocktail. Y/n was sitting to my right, Rossi was across from us, Spencer was next to him and the rest of the team was either at the bar or on the dance floor.

“Come dance with me Jayj, please!” My girlfriend pleaded with me, using her best puppy eyes. In all honesty I was far too tired to dance right now, and my cocktail hadn’t quite kicked in yet.

“Maybe in a bit babe, alright?” I hear her huff at my answer but comply nonetheless.

“Okay fine, I’m just going to dance with Derek first a bit then!” She cheerfully skips off and starts dancing with Derek. I giggle at the fact she peeled a girl off him just so they could dance together, he would not be happy about that.

I sit back in my chair a bit and watch as Penelope and Emily come back with the shits they ordered, clearly not just for themselves.

“We knew you’d say no to shits so we got you one anyway!” Emily explained as she sat a small glass in front of each of us, excluding Spence obviously. I put my glass down and picked up the smaller one with a questionably coloured liquid inside it but downed it with the rest of them anyway.

“Oh my god that’s.. oh god that strong.” I wince as the drink burn my throat. As I take a second to readjust to the sensation I look around and see y/n taking a break by the bar, but not with Morgan. A blonde who I’ve never seen before was cozying up to her side and whispering things in her ear. I could tell she was trying to ignore her but it still made my blood boil.

“Oh no, JJ’s jealous!” Rossi called out to everyone. Collectively all eyes then landed on my girlfriend and this woman at the bar.

“Oh damn JayJ she’s got your girl, what you gunna do?” I hear Morgan say to me as he walks up to the table.

“I’m going to wait a bit, see what happens.” Everyone shared a look that I didn’t care to analyse right now and went back to staring down this random blonde and sipping my drink.

After y/n was handed her drink she went back to the dane floor, I’m assuming to look for Derek, but instead she was met with two hands in her waist and a girl practicing grinding on her. That is my breaking point. She was visibly uncomfortable, what is with this girl?

“JJ!” Y/n shouted as she saw me approaching. I smiled sweetly at her and then glared at the woman now standing next her, with an arm resting on her hip.

“Uhm, who’s this?” The snarky girl asked. Y/n tried to sneak away from her to me but she was having none of it.

“I’m her girlfriend who are you?” The look of shock the flashed across this girls face was priceless. Instantly she let y/n/n go and she walked off.

“Hey are you okay?” I ask as she practically falls into my arms.

“Yeah I’m fine, just hated her.” I laughed at this then said, “You and me both. You’re mine, and no one else’s.” She looked into my eyes and gave me a small peck on the cheek and began to sway, with a shit eating grin on her face.

I smile at her antics and sway along with her. I pull her in by her hips and her arms find their way around my neck pulling my head to meet hers in a sweet kiss. Our lips moved together and it was like the world around us was drowned out. As if we were the only two people in this place, y/n/n had that effect on me. I tugged on her bottom lip and like clockwork she parted her lips to give my tongue entrance. We explored each other’s mouths like it was the first time again.

As we pulled away she smiled at me when her favourite song came on and her face lit up.

“OH MY GOD JAY WE HAVE TO DANCE TO THIS ONE!” I agree with her and we begin dancing together. Not with any real coordination, just enjoying ourselves.

so this is a big, long rant about sexism in the idv community bc it's been on my mind lately and i need to put it out there. this is what i've observed after almost four years in the fandom and been stewing on for a long-ass time. if you don't feel like reading an essay on how annoyed some random enby on the internet is, then don't click the read more and just keep scrolling. don't interact with this post if all you're gonna do is get mad; i'm not here to piss anyone off, just make observations. and if this isn't your experience, good for you and please direct me to whatever circles you run in because i need to be there.

so, i've noticed that the idv fandom is extremely shit when it comes to how they treat female characters, and nobody really.. talks about it?? the only person i've ever seen actually discuss it used it as a way to drum up sympathy for ada. which, if you know me, you know really fucking pisses me off. because there are SO MANY OTHER EXAMPLES of sexism in this community, but no, clearly because we have sympathy for a male victim of abuse we're being sexist towards his abuser.

the thing is. there is so much to point to when you talk about how the fandom is sexist. it's very common to see female characters boiled down to just a couple traits. mary?? hot mommy step on me. michiko?? soft and gentle and demure (don't think i won't notice the weird shit about how that's a very common stereotype of asian women btw i see it). demi?? hot and drinks a lot. emma and lily are "uwu mentally ill babies". annie is soft. emily is either an irredeemable monster or a bitch, depending on who you're talking to. patricia is scary and mean. sangria's a girlboss, grace is soft and gentle, martha is spunky. and if you ask anyone their thoughts / ideas on these characters beyond those short descriptors you get nothing. i'm starting to fucking hate the word "girlboss" because it's all anyone says in response to like half these characters.

male characters are given alllllll the nuance in the world you can't talk to an aesop fan without them going into their endless headcanons / theories on why he's the way he is or how he's not actually that bad of a person or how cute he is or whatever. look at norton, or eli, or orpheus, or luca, or edgar, or joseph, or ithaqua, or any characters in that vein, and look at how the fandom treats them. look at the endless fanfictions and character studies and ships and x readers and headcanons. and then look at what female characters get. nowhere near that much.

i feel like margaretha and emily are the ones who suffer the most from this male-centric view by the fandom. they're characters who are inherently intricate, whose actions can't be explained away as entirely good or entirely bad. but that doesn't stop people from actively trying. they're going to act like margaretha wasn't being horrifically mistreated by her husband and just decided to burn down the circus for funsies or whatever. they're going to act like emily isn't trying so fucking hard to help emma and repent for what she's done. neither of them are meant to be read as black-and-white, but people will try because if they have to use more than two braincells on a female character they're going to implode.

meanwhile you get paragraph after paragraph about the intricacies of the argument between luca and alva. you get so many people analysing the relationship between norton and orpheus and how they're both kinda dicks but also both kinda have points. you get endless people defending joseph's actions bc his brother's dead and he's terrified of growing old / forgetting the people he loved / dying. you get so many fucking stories about how y'know, edgar's not that bad actually.

AND I'M NOT AGAINST ANALYSING THESE CHARACTERS!!! idv, especially in recent years, has been doing some great things with character writing. like, fuck 'em, they've got their issues, but they're still really good with some stuff and deserve credit. but don't act like it's not obvious how so many people have overlooked women (and poc, don't think i've noticed people ignoring the intricacies behind william and ganji as characters as well in favour of "himbo" and "bastard who cares", but i'm white so that's not exactly my place to talk) in favour of their favourite skinny whiteboy of the week.

they're that way with older-looking characters, too. if an idv guy has facial hair, you bet your ass he's also getting boiled down to his base traits. jose's an alcoholic, kevin is self-sacrificing and likes women, kurt is a little guy, kreacher is Awful, charles basically doesn't fucking exist anymore. but again not the focus of the talk atm.

it's just. so upsetting. esp. since most of my favourite idv characters are women but everyone i talk to about them is like "oh yeah demi's hot" or "aww annie's such a nervous little baby" or "god patricia's such a cool girlboss". and even when the shit they say is positive in a vacuum it still makes me so upset bc THAT'S NOT ALL THEY ARE!! demi is kind and loving and hardworking in the face of a world that only ever hurt her. annie's life has been an endless stream of pain and heartbreak and the only thing she really wants is freedom. patricia is literally cursed and is trying to find her place in the world.

also. i fucking hate ada but she falls victim to this too. as much as i despise the "you dislike her just bc you're sexist" thing and as horribly uncomfortable as she makes me, don't act like you haven't seen how her entire character is boiled down to how much she "loves" this man. don't act like you haven't seen how her entire character, all of her promise and potential, is forgotten in favour of that fucking trainwreck of a relationship. i bet half the fandom can't tell me anything about her other than her relationship with emil. emil suffers from this too, with his backstory and personality and life of abuse becoming an afterthought, but again, not what we're focusing on.

this is not an isolated thing or confined solely to the idv fandom. this happens in fandoms everywhere. but because idv is so close to my heart i feel like i really need to talk about it. there's so little content of female characters when there's fucking daily content of male ones. and don't get me wrong, i do like male characters. norton is literally one of my favourite fictional characters and i love talking about / analysing him. but i can guarantee a lot of people wouldn't be so interested in him if he was a woman.

sorry, just needed to get that off my chest. mandatory "this doesn't apply to everyone in the fandom" and "if this doesn't apply to you then i'm not fucking talking about you". we were so against the ashley wood collaboration bc of how much he sexualised michiko (and women in general) but like. do y'all really care that much?? bc i really don't think you do.

Interesting thing that skinchangers don’t have visions, meanwhile apparently Alys has some, but greenseers have visions, called green sight, and are able to change skin, entering animals minds

Even dialogues in leaked tapes are not very reliable, sometimes they make into final cut, sometimes they don’t, and its delivery obviously differs, Emily and Gayle could interpret it differently, but dialogue itself usually gives some sort of context, so we can little bit analyse on text

It was just my assumption of Alys’ magical abilities, with all shit surrounding Harrenhal, Old Gods here and Isle of Faces near it, i hope for more magic next seasons

hi! i was wondering if i could request an aaron hotchner x ftm reader where the reader is pre-transition and hasnt come out and maybe theres a case involving trans victims and the team notice the reader being more defensive/worked up about the case than usual, and hotch mentions something to them about it and the reader just blows him off and makes up some excuse, but they eventually decide to come out to everyone on the trip back after the case?

You were on edge throughout the case (to put it lightly). You had been questioning your gender for years but never had the courage to talk to anyone about it (unless it was online and on an anonymous account). You working on a case where transgender individuals were being killed, their deadnames being written on their body in blood, and announced for the whole to see was driving you slightly up the wall. The team, to their credit, had noticed your behaviour and tried their best to coax you out of your shell. You had denied even being in that shell to begin with, the team members that had approached you (Derek, Spencer, JJ, and Emily) had just sighed at your words before shrugging at the others. There wasn’t much else they could do.

The tipping point didn’t come until two days in, after the team had realised that something was wrong and had tried to talk to you about it. “And then she-” It could have been an innocent slip up, the officer just forgetting the pronouns, had it not happened more than a handful of times before that, that day.

“He. The least we can do is continue to respect the victims’ pronouns.” You snapped, “Your whole team have been doing it since we got here and it’s ridiculous. They have just as much right as we do to be respected.” The officer flushed at your words and the attention before giving a sharp nod. Good. Maybe he’ll think twice before misgendering someone in the future. Satisfied with this, you nodded. An awkward silence passed, “I’m going to make a coffee.” You announced, leaving the room abruptly. You  felt like you couldn’t breathe in there without the team looking at you, profiling you. You didn’t want them to find out. You didn’t want anyone to find out. You had squashed this feeling down for years, you could keep going. No one needed to know. They couldn’t know. You needed to be (D/N). And (D/N) only. 

Hotch walked in moments later, just the two of you in the room. “What’s going on?” He asks after a moment of silence. You don’t look up from your cup, trying to keep the tears at bay. You knew the minute you let it show he would know what was wrong. So you shrug.

“Nothing.” You lie. “I’m just tired, that’s all.” You feel his eyes on you. Analysing you. “Stop doing that.”

“Stop what?”

“Stop profiling me. We’re not supposed to profile each other, remember?” 

“(D/N)-”

“Don’t call me that.” Your response is immediate and causes you to freeze. Shit. You weren’t supposed to give it away to anyone. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. 

“Hey, hey,” Aaron’s by your side in an instant. “I need you to breathe for me. Okay? You need to take some deep breaths.” You looked up at Hotch, shaking your head.

“No one’s supposed to know. No one’s-”

“Hey, look at me,” He pauses, “No one knows anything. I don’t know anything.” It’s not a complete lie. He doesn’t really know anything. He has his suspicions, but he doesn’t know anything. He takes your hand in his delicately, placing it on his chest. “Just breathe with me.”

He waits until your breathing has returned to normal before speaking. “You don’t owe me an explanation as to what that was about,” He says softly. “But, if you did wish to speak about it, I’m always here.”

“I think I’m like them.” You whisper, “I’ve hid it for years but I don’t know if I should anymore.”

“It’s not a thing you have to be ashamed of,” Hotch reassures, “What pronouns would you use? Do you have a name in mind?”

Your answer is immediate, “(Y/N), he, him,”

Aaron gave you a smile, “It suits you,” He said, watching you for a moment, “What are you thinking?”

“That I don’t want to hide anymore,” You answer, “I need to cut my hair, get new clothes, a binder, change my name. There’s so much to do…”

“First up, shopping,” Aaron said, “I’ll be right back.” You furrowed your eyebrows as he left the room. He was maybe a minute and then he was back in the room, “Okay, one haircut, let’s go.”

“What?”

“You said you wanted a haircut,”

“And?”

“And I’ve got us both the rest of the day off so I can go with you to get your haircut and get some clothes,” 

“You don’t have to-”

“I want to.” You frown for a moment before nodding. 

The team are confused to say the least, when you’re on the jet the next day and standing in front of them with a fresh haircut, clothes, and a flat chest (you and Aaron hadn’t been able to find a binder, but a well fitting sports bra did the job). 

“Everyone, this is (Y/N). He has recently come to terms with some things,” Aaron began, “But I expect him to be treated like anyone else.”

“Of course, man,” Morgan said, walking towards you with a grin. He embraced you for a moment before letting go, patting your shoulder. “You look good, dude, it suits you.”

You grinned. Maybe this would be okay after all.

i’m such a big fan of low empathy emily prentiss but i feel like i’d get killed by some fans for saying that lol. like i’m not saying that to mean "she’s a bad person because she’s not empathetic", i just think she has low empathy! does il that come with its own struggles? of course. but does it mean she’s Bad And Just Like The Unsubs? no! wtf! i feel like there was like a super short period on this site where people started finally acknowledging that your level of empathy doesn’t inherently make you a better or worse person, but it seems that faded very quickly… but anyway. jj literally remarks on her being unflinching in emotional situations, she generally has the least reaction to crime scenes (and when she does react it basically never hinders her ability to analyse the scene), when garcia was all distressed and told her that someone hurt themself in prison to get in solitary she literally said "oh that’s great!", she is mainly used for interviews and interrogations because her skills are in manipulation, she’s worried what people will think of her when she does something wrong but she’s not really remorseful about it, etc etc etc. she has low empathy. and she’s not the goofy ‘himbo’ empathetic wife figure that fandom often paints her as. not even that that would inherently be bad for a different character, i guess, but it’s not *her*. people are just intent on seeing her as just the good, neat parts of her character. sorry for the ramble, i hope you’re having a good day.

low empathy emily makes sense for so many reasons? it’s not something they really address at all, but i think it’s vaguely hinted at. like how she only shows vulnerability AFTER jj makes that comment… she knows hotch and the others are starting to get suspicious. her last job is highly classified so that’s a problem for a lot of reasons, but also i think it’s bc she realizes she hasn’t been as emotional as she should? kind of an “oh shit i havent been masking right” wake up call.

i also think it really works with her skillset? she’s had to adapt to a world where being in touch with your emotions and the emotions of people around you are both valued.. she’s had to learn to fake it. stands to reason that she’d be good at manipulation. not necessarily in a negative way—it’s just… something she’s had to do. it’s something she’s more comfortable doing than most. and it’s something she’s used to her advantage? she’s able to survive deep, dangerous undercover work with relative ease bc she knows how to be convincing.

i agree w you i think i lot of people don’t necessarily consider this headcanon bc they think it’s an insult or a negative thing, but honestly it’s just another part of life. it’s not a good or bad thing, it just is. i feel like on the internet in particular people like to assign morality arbitrarily and unnecessarily. but truthfully some people are just born like that? or it’s a trauma response? or it’s a part of something else? whatever the reason, it’s not a negative thing. if anything, it’s tough for the person who has to either learn to fake it or be ostracized for being different.

but it works in her favor a lot? other than just working undercover or doing interviews/interrogations, it adds a different perspective, a different skillset. sure maybe you could say she’s “missing” something, but she also has a strength where others have weakness. faceless nameless is such a good example: i think, if anyone else had been the first to find hotch’s apartment like that, they wouldn’t have been able to concentrate like she did. they would’ve been caught up in their fear and worry. not that she wasnt afraid or worried: the way she looked around shocked and the way she waited at his hospital bed and the way she escorted him to his apartment after proves that. she just didnt let it effect her the way the others wouldve. she was able to cooly, calmly step back and observe the situation. she could compartmentalize and painstakingly go through his entire fucking apartment to analyze if anything was missing, if anything was out of place. it’s such a small thing, i don’t think the others would’ve noticed a page of his address book missing. i think they would’ve gotten caught up in the fact that they were going through their missing, private boss’s things. they were only able to realize haley was in danger bc she did that. tbh i bet hotch was thankful she was the one to find him. i think that’s why he trusts her to lead the team—he knows she can focus and guide the others through difficult times.

idk to be fair the writers arent really great at writing women in general, so i cant really blame people for filling in the gaps, but low empathy emily just… makes a lot of sense? especially when we have alex blake come in right after, who very clearly IS bothered by things, just has a difficult time expressing it. anyway it makes me happy that someone else sees it bc low empathy emily is so personal to me, and it feels like no one ever talks about it

The last couple of episodes has been torture.

It’s been a good season, but for the love of God! I need the women to get out of Tamra Judge’s ass!

Shannon Beador accused Heather of putting the blame to everyone else, but I don’t think Heather is wrong.

It’s an obvious gang up season for Heather.

All the mean jokes, all the death stares when Heather and Terry Dubrow walked into Gina Kirschenheiter’s Halloween party, it’s just… mindblowing.

Even Taylor Armstrong and Jennifer Pedranti had an issue with her. There’s no benefit of the doubt when it comes to Heather.

What has Heather done to deserve this treatment? Was it because of how big deal her return to RHOC was? They want to dethrone her?!

This was Tamra’s plan all along, and nothing can convince me otherwise.

Gina, Shannon and Emily Simpson should be ashamed of themselves. They were pawns this season.

But I need Emily and Gina to stop letting themselves become pawns and stop falling for everything they’re told.

I could analyse that in a million different ways but ultimately I just need more info really.

Honestly let's take a moment to think about how much it would have sucked for Shauna being not only pregnant as a teen in that situation but also her best friend dying and losing any sort of comfort she had from that relationship on top of everything else. Like I can close my eyes and imagine Jackie helping her or snuggling up to her or giving her a massage or whatever cause she was that kind of friend. And now that's gone.

I completely understand why she would go into that shed to talk to her and Tai is fooling herself if she thinks she'd be any better if Van really did die when she got mauled to death.

Would it be bad if I just skipped all these filler scenes and just watched the bits that I cared about? This is honestly starting to resemble pretty little liars in a bad way with all the random filler comphet relationships. Like I had to wait through so many Ezra and Aria scenes just to get to the good stuff (Paige and Emily) and it feels like this show is kind of turning into the same thing at this point.

Every interesting scene is intercut with random shit of straight people screwing or married couples fighting and crap like that. We get like one gay scene but we have to sit through 45 minutes of other crap to get to it and it's not fair.

I don't hate any of these characters, they're just spreading the runtime time too thin between too many characters. Cut Callie out completely. Take out a chunk of Shauna and Jeff's stuff, they haven't really been interesting since Adam's death. Even Misty is suffering due to her forced collaboration with that shitty stalker of hers. Nat and Lottie and Tai and Van is where the present day story is at but their scenes are moving along at a snail's pace because they just spend way too much time trying to showcase other characters. Especially when things are really picking up in these other stories. I'm getting whiplash with the way the focus is constantly changing between all these groups of characters.

And I know other shows do it too (Game of thrones, bold and the beautiful, etc) but it's still really frustrating that it's happening here.

At least we're learning a bit about the cards. Though we already heard about them, we never really saw how they used them to divide tasks.

Crystal and Misty are bonding though and it's cute but it's making me worry that Crystal is going to get killed off soon. They tend to not focus on anybody but the mains and the characters that get killed off and since Crystal only really started cropping up recently I feel it would be naive to assume they were just showing more of the other yellowjackets out of the goodness of their hearts and not just to make us sad when they eventually killed them off.

One thing I did not anticipate is how much I would end up loving these characters...specifically the yellowjacket girls, and even more specifically the lesbians (Shauna, Nat, Van, Misty, and Taissa). I am just so glad all my babies are all alive 😌 and now Van and Taissa can get back together and live happily ever after 🥰

Nothing against Simone but she doesn't get Tai like Van does. And while divorcing would be hard I think it's safe to say their marriage is beyond saving at this point. Not only did they lose love and trust but when your partner actively fears you then you NEED to step away.

Anyway Crystal and Misty are cute -though some of those stories they're sharing feel like something they should be unpacking with a psychiatrist and not a friend- but I am really worried about Crystal...wait, Kristen, apparently.

Maybe related to that cult stuff. Though with the info we have now it seems more like a rivalry and like Nat is trying to break her cult up from the inside rather than trying to join it. Although cults do have more of an effect on people who fit Nat's circumstances, who are isolated and don't have much of anything going on for them.

I'm lowkey hoping Misty Crystals that William guy that's with her because I don't trust him and I can't stand him and historically her friends don't dare well.

Anyway I'm clueing onto the fact that Misty has some deep seated issues with self loathing and only pursues friendships with people like Nat, who hate her or otherwise look down on her because she can't accept being treated with love and respect as she doesn't feel like she deserves it.

Basically Misty is a masochist and turning away someone who looks up to her (or at least appears to worship her) because she hates herself and doesn't feel worthy of love and this is the way she's stagnated (like all the other girls have) and gotten stuck at age 16.

Honestly the vibe I'm getting is they're all punishing themselves. Nat through drugs, Shauna through sticking it out with Jeff because she feels like she HAS to make it worth basically killing Jackie, Misty through living a life of Loveless was and anonymity where she just cares for other people who would never care about her and Tai and Van by giving up the one thing that kept them while and sane; each other.

Everybody's making a sacrifice.

I’ve never read the IT book (pls i promise i’m not a fake fan!!) but could you describe the scene where eddie confronts his mom in the book and how it differs from the movie confrontation bc you make it seems as if eddie reacted differently?

omg pls i would never consider you a fake fan just because you didn't read the book! you've honestly saved yourself hours of grief and batshit craziness, so count yourself lucky haha! although, if you ever do get your hands on the book, i think you should definitely take the time to read the chapter "eddie's bad break" because it's such a fascinating and heartbreaking chapter where eddie discovers all the truths and lies in his life but also tries to navigate through this new reality as any eleven year old can do.

the events in the book vary drastically from the movie so let me give a bit of context. in the book, eddie learns that his aspirator is actually a placebo directly from the pharmacist mr. keene. eddie is understandably upset and confused, but most of all feels betrayed. and right when he's trying to figure his feelings out, he runs into the bowers gang. they have a chase and then he gets his arm broken by henry and starts laughing because he notices he can breathe and run normally. and for the first time he felt "real pain" and realized he could "still exist inside the pain, in spite of the pain." he then gets taken to the hospital where he gets his cast put on and ofc his mother is blowing a gasket and being her usual controlling self about how to "properly" treat eddie. she turns the losers away from visiting eddie at the hospital, and that's when eddie confronts her.

there are a hundred screenshots i could make of this chapter, but i think these ones show just how eddie's demeanor changed while confronting his mom and sonia's clear panic. the most interesting aspect about this confrontation is that it's all in sonia's point of view. so, we get direct knowledge in how she thinks of eddie and know undisputedly, that she is manipulating eddie for her own selfish needs.

and this screenshot is right after the confrontation, switching back to eddie's point of view.

another thought-provoking aspect of the confrontation is that eddie appears to be very calm and "stormy," indicating that he's not like his usual self. it's speculated that maturin (the space turtle that created the universe and is good/neutral guardian that wants to defeat It) possessed eddie when he confronted sonia. i believe eddie is obviously brave enough to confront his mother on his own, but i also believe maturin had a helping hand because it knew that eddie was a vital part in destroying It and in order to accomplish that goal, all seven of the losers needed to be together and sonia was actively trying to separate the losers club. also, another reason i think maturin could have possessed eddie is because eddie very blatantly manipulates sonia back during this confrontation; he "traps" her by saying he'll continue to use the aspirator knowing that it's fake, as long as he gets to keep his friends. eddie isn't very manipulative by nature, so this compromise might have been instigated by maturin. plus, we see the "real" eddie return once he asks for a hug, showing that he is inherently caring and forgiving even though his mother lied to him.

so obviously, the book confrontation is much more complex and difficult to translate onto the screen. it's why i don't criticize muschietti (shockingly lol) for going in the direction that he did for the movie confrontation. i think the same elements are there: we see eddie be impulsive and stand up to his mom in a behavior that deviates from his normal self, his mom still has that creepy manipulative attitude when she darkly says "they help you eddie. i had to protect you.", then eddie confirming that his friends are the real people who protect him, and finally even when he's leaving he's still apologizing to her, which shows his true complex feelings for her. so while i'll always enjoy the book confrontation more because of its depth, the movie still did a decent job and was iconic in its own right (and we really have to thank jdg for that improv haha)!

Hey Elsa, I understand that things are a bit too crazy right now and that we all need some time to cool off. First off, I am very sorry about the Anon-hate right now and I hope things cool down for a little while.

But at the same time, I personally believe that it isn’t okay to fade out people’s opinions. I understand that certain words were said and some people were hurt by them, but as I see it, I didn’t find anything hateful about it. The whole “using of tropes” thing, with Ethan and MC living their posh life, is not necessarily a bad thing at all. I found it to be a mere observation rather than something completely hateful. It is absolutely okay to use certain plot devices in writing. Heck, if you were to take a couple of movies and try to analyse them, you’d find so many repetitive plot points and yet, they’re all wildly successful. 

Supporting writers is important, but it is important to acknowledge that it is the internet. Things are going to be a bit difficult. There will be tears, opinions, laughter and others. While it is completely important - and I agree - that writers have it hard, it is worth noting that there will be different perceptions too. Not everyone would find Ethan and MC endearing. Not everyone enjoys Happily Ever After endings. But at the very same time, there are people who love them. That’s, unfortunately, the internet and its workings.

This is in no mean a “hate comment”. You’re doing your part in keeping this fandom alive. But I just hope all of this doesn’t contribute to many talented people leaving the fandom because they believe their opinions won’t be respected and will be shot-down.

I am sharing this one solely because you are respectful and expressing your opinions in a polite manner, the exact same way I did when I responded to the message yesterday. But, most of the rebuttals saying it's not Will are iffy. Cause we really don't have much evidence to point to any 1 character. Like the hair counterargument: that the hair is too long to be Will's .Will's s4 body double has a similar hair tuff on the back of his neck. *Also, any movies I’ll be mentioning (in the theories , below) were stated to be inspiration for ST.

So theories...

Theory 1) It's Joyce's car ( and it was rigged  to explode/look like an accident by Brenner or Lonnie). And Will wasn't there but sees it in a nightmare cause it's already happened/or it's a dream vision of the future.

Evidence:  CAR TROUBLES: Joyce’s car model was infamous for exploding in car accidents-being sued by the state of Indianna before the start of the series. We also have Alexi tell murray about a way to cause cars to explode-and turn people into dust (and make it look like an accident). Brenner’s name means “to burn” and he already hurt 1 mother to keep a subject -so not out of the realm of possibilities for him to hurt Joyce (and make it look like an accident to try and get Will and or el). 

In s3, we have Jonathan and Hopper try and fix  the car-and after this cars explode with people inside. Jonathan lifts the car hood- and notices someone rigged nancy’s car . Than,  right after,Billy’s car lights on fire with him inside. With Hopper (he also lifts the car hood) and joyce barely escapes the lit car (but she may not be so lucky next time).

 We also have Joyce tell Will 3x she’s going to be ok... which is a bit overkill if she will be OK ... 

And, notice during the hoodlift we see Will observing- which is similar to Alexi watching and warning them before hand that the car (with Joyce inside) will explode. So it’s possible foreshadowing since Will may predict the future and was was paralleled to Alexi.Alexi ‘can we watch lonnie toons now?. Will : can we play d&d now?

movie inspos: 

It’s hinted s4 will be around Will’s b day: In gilbert grape- Arnie after his b day, has his mom die, and a fire was stagged that lit his mom on fire. ( Before this,Arnie was also raised by his older brother Gilbert cause his dad wasn’t around). stoker-  kid’s parent dies in staged car ‘accident’ on her bday (this allows ab*sive relative closer to kid-since dead parent banned him from seeing kid). The kid  was taught how to hunt, by dad. And is also a painter and bullied at school (like Will). what dreams may come-painter blames themselves for fam dying in freak car accident- the relative was getting a present for them when it happened. so they blame themselves. The descent- also had (right before a b day, the main character’s fam dying in a car accident) .And the sole survivor/family member of the deceased hallucinates a shadow chasing her in a empty hospital hall. Get out-photographer (jonathan)blames himself for mother dying in car accident.

There’s also a lot of other films where the kid (for no logical reason) blames themselves for their mom’s/parent’s death: goodson, dream catcher, analyse this,etc. Of course ... this could simply relate to max and el having survivors guilt after the mall killed their family members (in a fake ‘mall fire’). However, a fake out fire causing  family to die (in s3)  could be foreshadowing for it actually happening in s4?

rigged car explosions: scarface -have guys try and bomb a car with kids and parent inside. backdraft -guy raised by older brother had 1 parent die in explosion and sees the freak explosion occur- later in the film someone rigs a car to explode and masks it as a  freak car accident. Same thing occurs in godfather- he sees family member die in rigged car explosion. The dark knight- rigs car to explode. batman v superman- calls superman a demon and says they need to burn the witch that bore him (aka his mom).

dreams (if in the past): Never ending story (reffed in s3)- starts with kid with bowl cut saying he had another dream about his mother who died. Peanut butter solution- kid has visions in dreams about people he knew who died in fire.  this next movie (emily rose) is  said to be Joyce byers inspo according to Winona - has (kid with 2 personalities) have nightmares from the past  of her and her mother burning in a car fire. while screaming/sleep walking she burns windows with her hands -accidentally using her powers. Some people suspect the videogame “life is strange’ is show inspo too- it has character named max caufield with a ‘never maxine rule’, etc. Anyways in the game prequel queer chloe, who plays d&d, would have dreams/nightmares of her nice parent’s car accident . Despite , chloe not being present for the car accident. After the parent’s death,  she’s stuck with her mean step dad.

dreams (if predicting the future): Will says in s3 Will the wise can see into the future. We also see Will/Will the wise via a dream predict Hopper was in danger-saying  to Joyce “he’s going to die”.  In ‘12 monkeys’ and ‘Rebel Robin st novel’ they mention the myth of cassandra- who could make accurate future prophecies , but was cursed to never be believed by those she warned. In 12 monkeys- he tries warning others of a dreaded event in future- and it’s dismissed as  him being mentally ill. Since, Will’s other abilities were dismissed as his ptsd in s2-and with the Byers fam having a family history of mental illness (they may not believe him over such a prediction). In ‘the ring’-the  movie opens with the guardian saying the boy is drawing the car accident that killed his mom -as a psychological coping mechanism. Only for the teacher to say he made that drawing before his mother’s death (and it’s revealed later the boy is psychic). Terminator 2- sarah conner says she is having future visions, which include explosions, and everyone dismisses it as her being schizophrenic. Like how in s2 a scientist said about Will “let’s see if this boy is a wizard or a schizo”.

If joyce survives the accident she may be hospitlized (and unable to have legal custody). In black swan the girl (with 2 personas) -blames herself for what happened to Winona Ryder’s character (who is in a coma after a car accident. They had had a verbal fight before the accident). In girl with the dragon tattoo- the main character (who is compared to a phoenix and dragon) has 1 parent burned in a fire- and after this her kind guardian is hospitilized so they can no longer take care of her- and she is placed with an ab*sive foster dad (who resembles her bio dad). If Joyce was in a coma - it would further parallel her to terry- and be another willel parallel.

 if dead: Tokyodrift- mom loses custody, and dad who is a mechanic and abandoned the family years ago, later gets custody. Super 8-mom dies in freak accident- douche dad gets custody. Book of henry-mom dies pre-film, ab*sive dad got custody. Outsiders- parents die in car wreck, relative gets custody of teen who he slaps etc.In black swan-girl who blames herself for Winona’s accident is stuck living with ab*sive parent. good son- mom dies, stuck with violent and manipulative relative after this.

Of course-joyce may be fine. And Lonnie may just visit for Will’s b-day and ruin shit that way.

Theory 2) It's an undercover government car that Will uses his powers against in self defense... or in anger after they hurt someone he loves.

Evidence:

Joyce about ‘Will the wise’: If he’s so wise, why does he need the fireballs? Why can’t he just outsmart the bad guys? Will: cause the bad guys are smart too. Joyce: so he needs the fireballs? Will: Yeah, to burn them to a crisp.

* the fact-this flashback happens at a funeral of a Byers, could also be narratively significant as foreshadowing.

Gov agents in s1 are  called “the bad-men” so Will may use fireball on “the bad-guys”(government agents) . Fire has been used on all the other adversaries relating to the upsidedown-so why not the gov agents (aka human villains) next? 2 movies on the inspo list caught my attention: firestarter & carrie (which are both stephen king adaptions with psychic kids who have fire abilities). 

Firestarter- she has pyrokineseis (firepowers) . And unlike every other psychic in the film- she is the only psychic that doesn't get nose bleeds (aka mini brain hemorages) from using her powers (Will). We know el and kali gets nose bleeds.  

(Anger): She only unleashes her fire abilities on gov agents after they kill her parent...

*And uses a literal “fireball” on them.

Could also be another willel parallel. kali about the US gov:" They took your mother away from you!" El str*ngles man from gov agency that incapacitated her mom . El before str*ngling him: " you hurt mama".

(self defense): While  in carrie  she kills people who tried to run her over with a car. And causes the car to explode.

Also, in s3 Steve does technically cause a car to explode to protect Nancy from being run over by a car (so maybe foreshadowing?). I believe, tumblr user ‘bran-who-writes-theoretically” was the first to point out the Carrie/car on fire parallel.

* This car scene could also be added to the list of Willel parallels. El  in s1 uses her powers to flip a government-car upside down. And looks back at it. And it’s a ref to the film Et. So Will causing a government -car to explode and flip upsidedown (referencing carrie) could be a parallel. 

Of course El flipped over a car in s3 to attack the Soviet agents and protect her friends too ( right before losing her powers). Sort of like Steve using his car as a weapon in s3 to protect his friends. so who knows, if not Will, maybe El (wearing a ponytail) got her telekenesis back and she flips the car and it explodes ? To be honest, I just find this explanation too boring, cliche, and predictable. And I still hypothosize the mindflayer took her telekensis (but not her other powers). Since in d&d mindflayers have ‘mage hand’ (what el is called) and ‘telekenesis’/ along with the ability to steal powers from other life forms. But, we’ll see...

Theory 3) The car flips (maybe caused by a deer jumping in the road) and it blows up after the crash- with Joyce inside. And maybe Jonathan survives it/ Will wasn’t there but had a nightmare /vision about it?

Evidence: in s1 Jonathan sees a dead deer that was hit by a car. This could be symbolic : because it related to Jonathan mentioning the hunting story with his dad and how he cried for a week cause he liked the film Bambi. Which in the film : Bambi (a deer) has his mother k*lled. And after his mother’s death, he’s taken in by his douchey dad who was M.I.A for most of his life ,until his mom passed away. And the hunters are the bad guys in the film . In ‘get out’ the photographer , Chris,blames himself for his mother dying in a car accident - and he sees a dead deer hit by a car -and the dying deer was used to symbolize the guilt he has over his mother’s  death. in ‘the long kiss goodnight’ a character is driving home with a friend- they swerve and hit a deer and 1 of them is ejected from the car into the forrest. But their friend is unconscious in the car and it quickly explodes on the road. The survivor turns and sees the car in flames- disoriented they stumble and kill the dying deer. And it’s left ambiguous if they were helping the deer end it’s pain or if it was vengeful-hunting (since it caused the car accident that killed their friend). Cause their face was emotionless from shock.

Even in the st novel "suspicious minds' rabbits- like jonathan was forced to kill on the hunting trip with his dad (around his b-day) represented the bond between mother and child.And the mother sacrificing herself for the baby-to not get k*lled (by Brenner).

-so maybe?? jonathan before he gets the pizza job/car (may have his car break down , like hinted it would in s3).

 So him and Joyce share the car (once his car stops working) and the accident happens while Jonathan is behind the wheel -with Joyce. And after this he gets the job at surfer boy pizza. Billy was a surfer boy and that memory was used to think about his mother who is no longer around (once he's stuck with his ab*sive dad after moving away from Cali). While Jonathan moved to Cali after his mom passed-maybe stuck with Lonnie.Jonathan's actor in recent pics has a blonde mullet - which sort of resembles joyce/Billy's og hair. This may be why he starts doing dr*gs - which is pretty out of character for him- but it could be a coping mechanism(like in the s4 films). One of many examples was 'enter the void'- the older brother was surrogate parent to their lil sibling and after a car accident k*lls his parents , he starts doing dr*gs to cope. Also ‘hunger games’ was on the list- and Katniss (who was a surrogate parent to her litle sibling, like Jonathan is to Will) in the sequel, saw her family die in an explosion. And it really broke her emotionally.

I've mentioned this before but Billy is used to parallel and foil Will and Jonathan. And it may be more than a ... what if Lonnie had custody scenario. But to show how Lonnie (like most ab*sers) will later bring out the worst in the kids (once he does have custody). Like how s3 has Will mimick lonnie with the baseball bat (and we see in s3 Billy being bullied by his dad to play baseball and flashbacks showing him mimicking Neil). I've also discussed how there's a theme with pretty much every character mimicking their parent- for better or worse.

Killing a deer would certainly hint at Jonathan's possible character regression (and mimicking Lonnie to a certain extent). if he not only blames himself for Joyce's death. But is also stuck with his ab*ser.

The animal k*lling motif , and after that, mimicking an a b*sive father is already shown with el. Brenner , in s1,tried to make her k*ll a cat (using her powers) and she refused (similar to the s1 rabbit hunting story of Lonnie forcing Jonathan to k*ll a rabbit ). But in s2, she uses her powers to k*ll a squirrel (and like a deer- it's typical hunting game). Than in s3 el does literally everything Brenner ever asked of her- she spies on people and repeats the words back (like brenner told her to do), she becomes a weapon to ‘fight the commies’ (which was said to be the reason he k*dnapped her in the first place), and when looking into the void to see the mf (she mirrors the words brenner told her - when he made her go into the void to face the demogorgan).

And some s4 movies are literally about being trapped in a house with your ab*ser and slowly losing your mind because of the ab*se and gaslighting- lighthouse , black swan , good son, are prime examples. But movies like scar face , girl with the dragon tattoo, and book of Henry touch on this theme a bit as well. And ordinary people- is about a guy who survived a vehicular accident but his relative in the same accident didn't- and it causes him alot of issues /survivor's guilt.

The shadowy figure could just be Will in the shot - seeing it in a dream before or after it happens?

Theory 4) Will sees a future vision or has his ’now memories’ of someone else's car.

Evidence: i guess the s4 shot parallels El (in s3) spying on Billy while he’s hurting Heather. During that spying scene: the shot is of El near Billy's car. So it’s possibly a diff willel parallel?

If not Will. Who knows ...if El’s telekenesis is gone maybe her spying abilities strengthened and look different because of it (and now she can see background details)?

Theory 5) it's Lonnie's car and Will escapes from the trunk and uses his powers in self defense

Evidence: I’m pretty iffy on this one. This goes back to how people suspected Lonnie took Will in s1 (and could be foreshadowing). Even the recent rebel robin book-has characters say Lonnie probably took Will. Jonathan suspected Will may be at Lonnie’s - so checks Lonnie’s car trunk (to see if Will is there). We also see how the mf in s3, knocked people out by dr*gs/str*ngulation, ties them up, and throws them in a trunk (to k*dnap them). Or how the cops raided jonathan’s trunk- which had stuff to track the demogorgan (and the demogorgan parallels Lonnie) . And after looking in Jonathan’s trunk-they suspected something fishy is going on.

*heather was described as “another me” by Will- who was thrown in the trunk.

movies: “tangled” was on the s4 list- and had an ab*sive parent later try and kidnap their kid ,and that parent ends up dying. in girl with the dragon tattoo (the girl associated with dragons & phoenixes-  lights her  ab*sive bio dad on fire. In ‘drop dead fred’ (girl who is in love with childhood friend, named Mikey, who she met at age 5) lights a imaginary version of her ab*sive parent on fire - while in a trippy memory world. Chrissy accidentally lights her ab*sive relative (nickname “daddy”)  on fire in self defense- in a trippy hell memory scape. in ‘long kiss goodnight- the girl with 2 personalities (Will/will the wise) was kidnapped and put in a trunk and escapes by jumping into a quarry. Not sure if that could relate to a flashback or something else? like in ‘don’t breath’ the older sibling who essentially was a surrogate parent to the younger sibling-mentions how their dad left the family, and her parent would throw her in the trunk for hours as a punishment.

Rating Every Song on Fearless Based on How Gay it is

Hello friends! I still have a few song analyses in the pipeline (and one on Lover the album) but today in honor of Fearless (Taylor’s Edition) being announced and Love Story being released in a few hours I thought I’d do something fun to celebrate!

And you know what? Fuck my usual disclaimer, I am the word of god here. Try and change my mind about any of these. I dare you. (I kid I kid this isn’t that serious and you’re free to disagree <3)

1. Fearless 15/10

Everything about this song is so fucking gay oh my god. This isn’t a fruit, this is a whole ass edible arrangement. As a small rural town Gay (my hometown has a population of less that 4,000 and where I’m living now has a population of 2,500) this uh. Hits.

“And I don't know how it gets better than this/You take my hand and drag me head first, fearless”

Y’ALL

The idea of falling in love with someone who makes you less afraid of your homophobic small town…….it’s getting to me.

“My hands shake, I'm not usually this way but/You pull me in and I'm a little more brave/It's the first kiss, it's flawless, really something/It's fearless”

This is making me emotional, I'll be honest. I see so much of my friends and my experience in high school in this song. 

This quote I found on genius is from when the album was released on BMR’s website.

“When I wrote ‘Fearless,’ I wasn’t dating anyone. I wasn’t even in the beginning stages of dating anybody. I really was all by myself out on tour and I got this idea for a song about the best first date. I think sometimes when you’re writing love songs, you don’t write them about what you’re going through at the moment, you write about what you wish you had. So, this song is about the best first date I haven’t had yet.”

This just screams baby Tay writing gay folklore to me, about the gay stories she wish she had. Notice how there are no pronouns in this song??? Fruity I’m telling you.

All that to say. I’m crying because the linear note says “I loved you before I met you” and I want to go listen to Long Story Short and cry now.

2. Fifteen 1/10

Objectively pretty straight as she’s singing about her and Abigail’s dating boys in HS. And Taylor got with a senior guy. Good for her I suppose.

Unless he was one of the shitty ones in which case.

“This is life before you know who you're gonna be”

This however, is a cute line and the whole song makes me warm and nostalgic. You can also hear her crying after the line “and Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind” which makes me emo and I’m sure will take on new depth after Abigail’s divorce and hurt me even more.

Other highlights that make me sob include.

“When all you wanted was to be wanted/Wish you could go back and tell yourself what you know now/Back then I swore I was gonna marry him someday/But I realized some bigger dreams of mine”

Bigger dreams of hers indeed :’)

(Also how can you say she’s a gold star lesbian when this song exists. She was obviously dating boys in high school and even if you think she’s a lesbian. Comp het is a hell of a drug kids.)

3. Love Story 8/10

Tried to change the ending indeed.

This is THE Taylor Swift song, and maybe it’s the nostalgia talking but damn I still love it. Written because she wanted to change the ending of Romeo and Juliet (how anyone likes RandJ enough to want to rewrite I have no clue.) and/or because her parents didn’t approve of a guy she was seeing. (according to genius, it would’ve been too early for Joe J so it could possibly be Boys Like Girls frontman, his image did clash with hers and they did release some cute songs together. However if you want my take it’s probably folklore about Emily, take for what you will)

This song has very oft gay vibes with the ‘They don’t approve of our love angle!’ but uses male pronouns so points redacted for that. HOWEVER this is a very early use of ~the male perspective~ in Taylor’s songs and for that it deserves all the love.

“ So I sneak out to the garden to see you/We keep quiet, 'cause we're dead if they knew/So close your eyes/Escape this town for a little while”

More rural town angst!!!

Nothing gets me more than rural town angst.

“Romeo, save me, they're trying to tell me how to feel/This love is difficult, but it's real”

Originally the lyric was “this love is different”. Granted I do not remember the source, i’s just lore implanted into my brain, but make of that what you will.

“"Marry me, Juliet, you'll never have to be alone/I love you, and that's all I really know/I talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress/It's a love story, baby, just say "Yes"”

Marry me Juliet from the male perspective :)

Also worth noting. This is Karlie’s (and Kim K’s lmao) favorite Taylor song which. While basic as hell. Makes this cover sad as hell to this former Kaylor. (thanks @swiftgron-get-married for the tears <3)

Also not to make this about a man AGAIN but the secret message is “Some day I’ll find this” AND SHE DID IM CRYING.

4. Hey Stephen 1/10

The one thing Camilla Cabello and I have in common is loving this song, so I have to live with that for the rest of my life.

This song is very painfully straight.

How can you think this woman is a gold star lesbian.

The only noteworthy thing is that this is one of the few songs she confirms who it’s about. The secret message is “Love and Theft” which is the name of a country music duo who went on to open her Fearless tour. Which, does make me side eye this song a little bit.

Still a cute song.

5. White Horse 1/10

Oh look. It’s track five. 

You know maybe this is just me being a bitch but in my ranking of track fives this is. Pretty low. Maybe on the bottom.

Like I don’t have a lot to say about it. 

She’s going through it over a guy. He was a cheating dickweazel. 

“'Cause I'm not your princess, this ain't a fairytale/I'm gonna find someone someday/Who might actually treat me well”

“Try and catch me now, oh/It's too late/To catch me now”

These lines hit though!!

And she found Joe!! Who treats her well!!!! And she isn’t the princess, she’s the prince who dropped her sword and knocked on her door!!! But this time if they come for them she’s ready!!!

6. You Belong With Me 5/10

Ah yes. The other THE Taylor Swift song.

You know. If I went to a high school with a cheerleading squad. And I had a crush on a cheerleader. I would blast this song. So for that it gets a 5/10. Otherwise. Fairly straight and fairly iconic.

7. Breathe 8/10

Well. We know this one is about a woman. (Emily Poe for those not in the know. Ha. A rhyme!) That alone has an 8/10. And it’s the first time she has a featured artist so bonus points for that!

It was nominated for a Grammy and it fucking lost to Jason Mraz. When’s the last time you thought about Jason Mraz.

I will not have Kaylor feels on a fucking Fearless song but damn is it VERY easy.

“Never a clean break, no one here to save me/You're the only thing I know like the back of my hand”

“It's 2 A.M, feeling like I just lost a friend/Hope you know it's not easy, easy for me”

Also this bridge? Goes off. HIGHLY underrated. 

8. Tell Me Why 3/10

You know. Maybe this album isn’t as gay as I once thought.

This song does bop though, not as good as her other angry songs on this album. But I can vibe with this you know. Why are you being an asshole mysterious man.

“You could write a book on how to ruin someone's perfect day”

This has to be one of baby Tay’s best burns. Damn. 

“Why do you have to make me feel small/So you can feel whole inside?/Why do you have to put down my dreams/So you're the only thing on my mind?”

Men ain’t shit kids. However, bonus points for the shade. 

9. You’re not Sorry 1/10

Ok, ok. Maybe this was a foolish endeavor.

Because yet again we have a very straight song. A good song. That was on Taylor’s episode of CSI. But oh dear. Very straight. Gets a measly one point. We started this post off so very very gay but damn. We seem to be nearing the end on a very straight note.

10. The Way I Loved You 20/10

Hey Remember what I said about this album being very straight.

WELL THAT WAS A LIE.

Is this a comphet album or am I projecting.

This is one of my favorite baby gay Taylor songs. Her masterful use of pronouns (he is sensible! And so incredible! And all my single friends are jealous! But I miss screaming and fighting and kissing in the rain, when it was two am and I was cursing your name!) makes the other person she’s singing about completely vague, while we know she isn’t happy with whichever guy she’s dating.

Mayhaps an early reaction to PRomances?

Either way this song is so good, truly an underrated gay gem I mean. Look at it.

“Breaking down and coming undone/It's a roller coaster kind of rush/And I never knew I could feel that much/And that's the way I loved you”

AND THE BRIDGE. Do all of her gay songs just have kickass bridges?

Also please watch the live performance of it from the Fearless tour. It’s such a damn shame this got cut from the movie and some woman in the front row is wearing a cowboy hat. Everyone is holding up those cameras everyone had to have before smartphones. Taylor is being endearing. It’s a good time.

11. Forever and Always 6/10

Bonus points for the ~drama~ of it all. Added last minute to the album? The iconic throwing of the chair in live performances?? All of it very dramatique and for that we stan.

Still pretty straight.

Also Joe Jonas responded to the song and why do I find his response so damn funny. “It’s part of being a musician, I guess. You write songs about each other.”

This is another song where the idea of Taylor’s grown up vocals on this is………..whew

12. The Best Day 0/10

This gets zero points because it’s about her literal mom.

Still makes me cry.

13. Change 13/10

We start the official tracklist with a gay song. We end it with a gay song.

We will ignore that it was originally written for Scott and BMR and instead induct it into the hall of gay pride anthems, as it should be.

Like. Picture baby Taylor writing this song and playing it on her guitar to a girl she has a crush on telling her that she’ll protect her and they’ll be safe and in love and happy together. Gah, maybe I’m ~projecting~ but this sweet ass song always gets me and is EASILY in my top five Taylor songs. Super underrated and hecking cute.

This song gets 1/10 because I don’t like it. There. I said it.

17. Come in With the Rain 3/10

I can see why this is a bonus track. It doesn’t hit me as much as the other songs on the album.

But damn if I don’t want to scream sing this one driving down a high way.

18. Superstar 7/10

You can’t tell me this song is about a man. I simply won’t entertain the idea.

You cannot prove to me that this song is about a man. There is not a male pronoun in sight.
