Only the first of those titles will actually show up when you search for it.  There are now 50 episodes Dubbed, and all of the same episodes can also be watched Subbed and maybe more by the time I get this posted.

Initially it was only the first 10, of those 971-974 is an interesting 4 parter and the best of those 10 which are all muliti parters.

The best one off episodes from in the first 20 are 978-980, any of those three could make a neat first impression of the show.  

984-985 is a Kaitou Kid case featuring some of the regional recurring characters that is pretty good.

988 and 992 are Sonoko Deduction Queen episodes and I guess I just feel bad for the BangZoom actress never getting to do one of these since it never happens in the movies.  At any rate both these episodes are pretty cool.

But perhaps the best episodes Dubbed on Tubi so far are 993-995 Makoto Kyogoku the Understudy.  It's the Dub debut in any cast for Sera Masumi and a pretty perfect episode to introduce her with.  Makoto's character is also perhaps better represented here then in the Blue Sapphire movie.  The episode has an isolated case that's interesting but happens do a decent amount of Lore refreshing that I think makes it a good set of episodes for newbies.  And also plenty of moments that are just plain fun.

1000-1001 is actually a remake of an early case, episode 11 on Crunchyroll and Filmrise and 11-12 in the Funimation Dub.  It's a stand alone case plot-wise but story wise is important to why saving the lives of even the culprits is important to Conan.  But it has a potentially problematic element that makes my feelings towards it mixed.  At any rate I really don't consider this remake the optimal viewing experience anyway, the tone and mood of this story really is better served by Retro Conan's artstyle.

1002 is the lead in episode for The Scarlet Bullet.  How these lead in episodes actually relate to the film in question is usually pretty abstract, they are by no means necessary.  Part of why I think a mistake was made is that even before these finally went up I was expecting that 1002 might be skipped for the purpose of saving it for being a bonus feature when Scarlet Bullet finally gets an English BluRay release.  I would probably like this episode more if I wasn't as politically informed as I am, this is practically a PSA episode about littering that really plays into the Liberal individualizing of the issue.

1004-1005 is another good 3 parther.

Episode 1009 is a fun Detective Boys episode.  1010 is a unique episode that I found pretty fun, and it;s another appearance of Danny's.

1011-112 is pretty interesting.  It's the first Columbo type Case in these Tubi Dubbed episodes so far, and the Dub debuts of both the Kindergarden Teacher and Yamamura the Gunma inspector.  I was actually suprised how well Yamamura's voice turned out, he fits the character perfectly.

1013 is one is a really compelling episode.

A Sierra Storm

This past week in Northern California has been unsettled with nightly thunderstorms in the mountains. After a quiet fire season, we are now dealing with several dozen fires. While I am not in the mountain now, it made me think about some prior lightning encounters.

A summer storm in the Sierra is hardly a unique mountain experience. Yet I find them disconcerting … underscoring our vulnerability and insignificance.  I’ve been known to make promises in the midst of the alpine pyrotechnics that I still need to make good on. This story shares one particular episode just north of Muir Pass, on the stony shores of Wanda Lake.

The National Weather Service calculates that my odds of being struck by lightning any given year is literally one in a million.  Just about the same as my odds of winning a gold medal in the Olympics.  As I sat tucked on my Thermarest pad trying to minimize any direct contact with the ground, I could feel the tension throughout my body.  My racing heart, shallow breathing, and knotted stomach.  Another flash illuminated the tent followed almost immediately by the demoralizing explosion of thunder.  Our little foxhole felt so incredibly vulnerable.

 Flash.  BOOM.

I stole a glance at Howard and Jim.  We were each mouthing the numbers as we counted between the flash and the thunder.  For a while we had been able to count and joke.  For the past eternity – perhaps ten minutes – we were happy to get to “1001” or “1002”.

Flash.                    BOOM.

A little longer.  Maybe the storm is passing.  Several rumbles chase each other down the valley, tripping and tumbling as they go.

Flash.BOOM

My body tightened.  I just hoped that it wasn’t my time yet.  You have to be fatalistic in these storms.  You are completely powerless. Impotent.  A minor actor on an immense stage.

We had started early to make the first climb into Evolution Valley in the cool of first light. That seemed so long ago now.  We made steady progress as the trail paralleled that series of beautiful meadows that follow the meanders of Evolution Creek.  After some half dozen miles of this leisurely stroll the trail climbed steeply into another hanging valley, the Evolution Basin.  We made an extended stop at Evolution Lake to do laundry and wait out the most intense part of the day. At 10,800’, trees are scarce and the sun fierce.  Through the mid-afternoon the skies had remained perfectly clear offering no hint of things to come.

          Grey granite walls touch

          Translucent blue waters that

          Reflect the heavens.

Flash… 1001 … 1002 … 1003 … BOOM

The lightning and thunder brought me out of my reverie and back to the present.  I stretched my legs quickly and pulled the sleeping bag around me to preserve the warmth.  This was the quiet between.  The waiting.

“Damn,” I muttered.  Jim suggested that we should count faster.

As we had passed Sapphire Lake I can remember thinking, as I eyed the skies, “Probably not the best time to be heading into such an exposed world.”  Ah, the wisdom of hindsight. 

About 6:45 p.m. we topped the bench that dams Wanda Lake.  Just, and I mean precisely at that moment, as we took our packs off the rain began.  The first few drops gave us the illusion that we had ample time to select a suitable tent site.  That was not the case.

Almost immediately the rain transitioned from drops to sheets and with it a chilling wind swept across the lake. The rocky landscape offered little protection and a few totally inadequate tent sites, ones we would have scoffed at any other time. 

The leader of a Sierra Club outing group camped nearby amidst a jumble of rocks, motioned to us that there was a flat space near them.  Even as efficient as we were at erecting the tent after more than a week on the trail, we were pretty wet by the time we had the tent up and packs somewhat protected.  Then the lightning had begun.

          In this high country

          With lightning in a barren land

          I feel so naked.

Frankly there is little I find more terrifying in the high country than lightning, that massive electrostatic discharge caused by unbalanced electric charge in the atmosphere. 

“Separate,” yelled the Sierra Club trip leader. 

Flash                               BOOM.

We huddled in the tent.  The thunder reverberated off the surrounding peaks.  It was the hall of the mountain king with tympany pounding and cymbals crashing.  The rain alternated sleet, hail, and rain.  I took my sleeping bag and dry clothes from my pack sheltered (somewhat) in the vestibule.  Jim and Howard’s resources were under pack covers well outside the tent. We put on my clothes and covered our legs with the sleeping bag as the temperature dropped.  The sweat and precipitation that had dampened us, now began to chill us .  The wind buffeted the tent bending the tent wall toward us.

Flash… 1001 … 1002 … BOOM.

We waited.

Flash … 100BOOM

Too close.

Fortunately, the whole episode lasted about an hour.  Not an atypical Sierra storm. It was twilight by the time the storm was spent.  In the waning evening light we made a quick dinner, appreciated the illuminated peaks around Wanda Lake, and watched (rather ironically) the stars as they appeared.  No cards tonight.  Perhaps a few prayers.

PodQuiz: Trivia That Can Crush Your Dreams of Being a Jeopardy Champ

Did you know that the long-running TV game show Jeopardy has a 27 million weekly audience? Every night, millions of families sit down and challenge each other to answer the show's trivia questions before another family member. Serious bragging rights are at stake here.

Millions more head out to Pub Trivia Nights and challenge strangers to do battle on trivia knowledge. Usually, the winners take home a modestly-priced gift card. However, it's the bragging rights that count.

Trivia is about small facts, but is certainly big business. If you haven't heard about it, let me introduce you to PodQuiz, the weekly trivia quiz podcast. The format is deceptively simple. "Each week there are twenty questions, some music as an interlude, followed by the answers. Get your Friday fix of trivia every week"

 The podcast has been recording and releasing episodes for nearly 20 years and 1,005 episodes at the time of this review.

   James Carter is the host of PodQuiz weekly trivia quiz.

He is also a blogger, walker, geek, and host of Starring The Comp. I could not find much else on Carter, other than my observation is that he is the exact opposite of Elon Musk. Where Musk makes everything about him, Carter is content to let his trivia podcast take center stage, as he seems comfortable in the background. It's refreshing.

In a June 2024 interview with Waveform, Carter explained, "In the early days of podcasting, it was an amateur affair with no professional or corporate involvement, and podcasts were informal conversations among friends."

Carter was initially interested in the technology behind podcasting and the delivery of audio via RSS, which led him to start PodQuiz. The show has maintained a consistent format over the years, closely following the traditional structure of a pub quiz, as Carter has not felt the need for major changes.

PodQuiz started as a hobby inspired by trivia segments on other early podcasts. Carter uses a simple setup with Audacity and a USB microphone to record and edit PodQuiz, which takes him about an hour and a half to two hours for each episode. To avoid burnout, he approaches PodQuiz as a hobby and spreads out the research and preparation work over the course of a week, totaling around eight hours per episode.

In the Waveform interview, Carter said, "I put thought into creating questions and categories with varying difficulty levels to engage listeners with different levels of knowledge on a given topic."

So what are some of the categories? There are four on each episode. Five questions for each category.

Here's a sample of recent episodes: 

June 13: Music (Sax Solos), Postage Stamps, Quantities (Quickfire), and Pandas

 May 16: Music (Connections), Printing, Flowers (Quickfire), and Transport.

Here are a few questions. Let's see how you would do?

 1. What animal was part of a thought experiment by Erwin Schrödinger in which that animal is both alive and dead until actually observed?

2. The infinite monkey theory postulates that a monkey hitting a random key on the typewriter in infinity will eventually type the completed works of what author and playwright?

3. Name the year of the Hindenburg Disaster?

4. Name the country where Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie was born -- France, Poland or the U.K.?

 Finally, Carter has a music interlude between the questions and the answers. The music is not a tune streamed two million times on Spotify. Instead, you'll hear Thought Experiments by Alex Kult, Post A-Priori by Apache Tomcat, and Eric and Magill with a song called Vegetable Gardeners. No Taylor, Drake, or Dua Lipa. 

I like the musical choices. They're unique and interesting. 

On occasion, Carter enables guests to devise questions for a category they are passionate about. For example, in episode 1002, guest Winston asked about pandas. WTF! 

If you are a trivia fan, check out PodQuiz. It's not fancy, but it is the best trivia show in the podcast universe. It will humble some and reward others, based on your skill in trivia.
