One of the things I find so interesting is how Jing is so very much not what a FL’s endgame love interest, especially in an epic xianxia, looks like (I mean in terms of character and narrative, not physical looks. Deng Wei is a ridiculously handsome man, like the rest of XY’s choices.)

I wonder if that is where at least some of puzzlement over XY’s choice/dislike of Jing as endgame that I’ve seen come from.

Jing is NOT the male lead - that is Cang Xuan, XY’s cousin who she never has even a glimmer of romantic feeling or attraction to. But Jing is also not the biggest badass or most magically powerful or most ambitious or with most status or most grand gestures or most epic story or even most outsize interaction with FL (vampy took her on dates to freaking underwater with his magic while Jing got her a practical gadget to use to go underwater herself; Vampy gave up one of his nine lives to heal her; Jing was only able to preserve her body so it would not be beyond saving and also try to die himself. Vampy’s power is battle while Jing is a tracker. Jing’s love is all-consuming and devoted but it’s also quiet.)

Jing does not come out first in anything except possibly torture (tho honestly that’s a bit of an open season on that one) and abnegation for FL’s sake. I mean the three guys are (future) emperor, a legendary rebel general with nine lives and an insane amount of magic and a…wealthy merchant.

And in a lot of ways it goes against the accepted usual narrative. Of course the top alpha dog would get the FL - the biggest bestest dude!!!! There are not many dramas where FL ends up not with ML and the ones I can think of still have a guy with outsize power/not that quiet/unhinged charisma - think of Ji Chang Wook in Empress Ki for example. The closest I can think of is in The King Loves also based on a novel where FL did not end up with the royal ML but the SML, the quiet royal bodyguard (but even there Rin was the best fighter in the drama.)

And of course the other thing that reinforces this whole departure from the usual narrative and can drive frustration is if you look at the three arcs/obstacles to FL for the three men. Cang Xuan is freaking fighting and scheming to win an empire! And accepting the whole drama maxim “love is never fated for an emperor.” Vampy is literally a sworn enemy of XY’s brother and fights to restore the long-defunct kingdom. So we have a would be emperor and a rebel leader. And then Jing’s problem is getting out of his engagement to an awful woman to be free to marry XY and/or leaving his monster family and abandoning his name to follow XY. I can see someone going “that’s nothing!”

BUT!

I love the narrative for getting that to a person living it, it’s all-consuming but also sticking to its guns that who XY will end up with is not about the usual tropes but what makes sense for her as a character. And so there is a reason Cang Xuan is the ML but Jing is the endgame and she does not end up with Vampy either. Cang Xuan’s wishes and plans drive the plot but that is precisely both why Jing is secondary in the plot but the one XY picks - she wants someone who will not drive the plot because what she wants is someone she wants cottagecore life with and there is no plot in cottagecore. The very fact that all Jing yearns for and all he fights for is domestic bliss (a traditionally FL obsession) - even all his scheming to help CX ascend is because he wants to assist FL’s desires - is why she ends up with him.

As she pretty much point blank stated in 33, everyone in her life put her second to a great cause and she’s done with that. The girl does not want a man who will change the world, she wants someone who is content to live in it with her.

ETA: I keep saying it but what the audience would pick in her place remains irrelevant. I mean I would not pick any of the three myself - I don’t feel like eternally sharing my man with 100 women as anyone with Cang Xuan would have to, Vampy’s greatest desire is to perish in the fight and the lack of appeal of that as a dating quality is obvious, and with his fam, marrying Jing would be like marrying into the Manson Family. But I am not XY so here we are.

TBB S2E08 Truth and Consequences

Oh this episode was narratively just so satisfying. After the season 1 finale, my prediction was that Tech would leave the Batch first, but now with the Clone Rights subplot introduced it makes total sense for Echo to leave first. His strong idealism just finds a better home with Rex and the Clone Cause instead of aimlessly drifting through the galaxy.

Honestly, I am thrilled to see the series slowly dissolve the squad. I can imagine the reasons why Tech would eventually leave, I'm not so sure how they would pull it off with Wrecker (ETA: scratch that, I can totally see it with Wrecker; dude became a Wookie fast in that one episode). In the end, I guess it's just Hunter and Omega, and then interesting things can happen.

Especially with Rampart now being set up as a foil for Crosshair; when Rampart is arrested in the senate, he claims to have only followed orders. Which sounds suspiciously similar to Crosshair's Soldiers Follow Orders. The Imperator discards of his Admiral, Crosshair was left behind by his squad. It would be interesting to see each of them deal with that shame in their own way, though I don't expect Rampart to return before season 3 (should it ever happen).

Echo's departure weakens the Batch considerably, so far having filled in as Hunter's de facto second-in-command in Crosshair's place, and given that this episode sits at the midpoint of the season, the pace will pick up and the squad can unravel quickly from here on.

With Echo and Crosshair each representing two diametrically opposed ends of the ideological spectrum, and now both of them separated from the squad, I would be thrilled to see some interactions between them. Perhaps during a mission Echo is running for Rex. That would be delicious. Imagine hating yourself so much you need to partially divert that hatred onto a (quite literally) faceless group of people you call 'Regs' and look down on for something that is essentially indistinguishable from your own essence of being. And then you run into somebody who fights for Clone Rights, and hey, you're a Clone too, regardless of how much you tried to separate yourself from them, this guy is fighting for your rights too, even though you're a mean asshole. That's Echo and Crosshair. That's the dynamic I wanna see.

Qenik and Vitak Venerables prepare the Artokekoitzai Colosseum for use, for the first time in this Age, The Artokekoitzai has been called. It is a challenge between Queens to resolve a dispute, a substitution for war when diplomacy fails. The opposing hives select their greatest warriors and hunters to compete in the Artokekoitzai Colosseum, the largest arena on Aradas.

In this case, the Zaxatel League and the Xav Empire have used their right to challenge the Ikibat Federation, the Eta-Vet Pact, and the Vur Grand Hive over their deadlock on the issue of the @pactargent, resulting in the compromise of the demand for Juggernaut removal and subsequent Argent-hive departure of Aradas. Although that is the main point of contention, the tensions between the hives have built for some time, and various issues are up for resolution in this Artokekoitzai.

The Zaxatel League states if they achieve victory, the other hives will have to agree to leave spiritual beliefs out of Tribunal affairs in regard to alien-hive interactions. The Aradas Confederacy of Hives and the Xav Empire already agreed to this prior to the calling of Artokekoitzai. Additionally, they demand the territory of Qehiak Island, as they believe the geothermal properties of the island will serve the advancement of Aradas better in their hands.

The Xav Empire states if they achieve victory, the personal xenophobic beliefs of the Vur Grand Hive must not influence their policies and the dispute over the Border Hives will be resolved with Vur submission of the territorial claims.

Though the Zaxatel League and the Xav Empire offered the Confederacy a place by their side in the Artokekoitzai, they refused to take part in the tradition. Calling it "the senseless bloodshed of drones".

Currently the Ikibat Federation, the Vur Grand Hives, and the Eta-Vet Pact are formulating their own demands if they achieve victory, and rumour has it that the Eta-Vet Pact will be making their own claim against the Vur Grand Hives.

This one is excited to actually witness The Artokekoitzai. As the practice was abandoned in the early Industrial Era, the last time such an event occured was when the Zaxatel League was founded, nearly two thousand years ago.

With Harry’s explosive claims that the palace is responsible for leaking information, I thought I’d write out some patterns we’ve all be noticing in a comprehensive list.

“Meghan’s Wild About Harry!”: Meghan and Prince Harry are officially dating is leaked to the press after Harry explicitly instructed Meghan not to talk about their relationship. Guess who leaked this information? Meghan herself to the press (per Tom Bower). Who benefited from having this information in the news? The Palace or Meghan? Side note: Lainey Lui is gossiping about Harry and Meghan/Other Royals before officially announced. Who’s Lainey Lui’s best friend? Meghan.

“South Africa Refuge”: Only 3 people knew Harry and Meghan were headed to South Africa. Why would it be in the interest of the institution to leak this? This would look poorly on the palace for a member of the royal family is leaving the fold! Who has never wanted to be anywhere near South Africa? Meghan.

The Day The Queen Died”: Omid Scobie reports via Twitter that both Meghan and Harry are travelling to Balmoral to be with the Queen. Behind the scenes though Meghan is told she would not be welcomed. Meghan leaks she is going to Balmoral and uses the press to bully the royal family into allowing her to come OR makes the royal family look bad for “uninviting” her to the Queens final moments. Who benefits from this leak? The palace? Or Meghan? Side note: Another press leak stated that Catherine isn’t going either. Was this the palaces’ retaliation to show fairness? Or was it Meghan to save her ego?

“The State Dinner”: Omid Scobie again leaks that Harry and Meghan were invited to the state dinner during the mourning period for the Queen. Another feeble attempt to bully the institution into getting what she wants or purposely making the royals look bad. Why would the institution leak this kind of information when they know it’s false? Who is benefitting from this leak? The royals? Or Meghan?

ETA: “The Farewell Announcement”: They leaked their own statement by themselves on their Instagram page without consulting the firm. Meghan convinced Harry the firm is against them so they must fight back by bullying them through the press. She leaked the departure to the world because she needs to bully the institution into giving them what they want. Interesting that their initial demands were the famous half-in, half-out scenario which was shot down by the firm before they leaked their departure and was of course shot down after their departure. She knows what she is doing.

Get Up by NewJeans is a solid 8/10.

Every song on the EP is an earworm and I've been streaming the album since it dropped. There's no other 4th gen girl group that gets me excited for new music lately, more than NewJeans. XG is a distant second (anon in ask 2, all they've put out so far is a couple of singles which I think are very good, but the actual comeback is in late September so we'll see).

The stand-out songs on the EP for me are Cool With You, New Jeans, and ASAP, but every song on the EP is doing very well (except ASAP that most people seem to hate right now. But I suspect that will change with time.)

My theory of NewJeans' overarching concept being Alice in Wonderland, was confirmed for me in their visual album as that's the throughline idea in all the MVs, despite their very different themes.

The Powerpuff Girls / New Jeans intro being the most obvious analog, starting the EP with taking bunnies inside the imaginary world of NewJeans' townsville, reiterating that they aim to "make you feel like you're in a game", that this sound and vibe is what to expect, etc.

Super Shy which follows the girls within their universe where they're already known and loved (the callback to Attention at the start of the MV which people are already dancing to)

ETA is the first obvious reference to the parasocial attachment that NewJeans continues to highlight in their music. Just as in Ditto, it's self-aware with a morbid and surreal undertone to it. The MV director Shin Woo-seok, has also said the MV plot lesson is centered on how rumours can be used and weaponized regardless of whether they're based in fact. Which... again, just brilliant considering everything about how k-pop stans operate in general.

Cool With You & Get Up are the climax of the EP in my opinion, and in them we see the most interesting and sophisticated expression of identity conflict and reconciliation in parasocial attachments, using the story of Eros/Cupid and Psyche. Get Up, according to Ador, is only an interlude in this EP but will serve as the sonic blueprint for their next album. And this also confirms another pattern I've noticed. Min Heejin has been using one song from each album to hint/tease the dominant sound for the next. So, what I mean is:

1 - In NewJeans (debut EP) Cookie was a slight departure sonically from the other songs on the album, but sounds very similar to OMG which followed.

2 - In OMG (singles album) Ditto sounded nothing really like OMG (the song) but its UK garage + Baltimore Club combo sounds more like the full fledged expression of D&B that we see in Super Shy, Cool with You, and other songs in Get Up.

3 - And now in Get Up (2nd mini album) we hear that their next album project will sound a lot like Get Up (the song).

ASAP is easily my favourite song on the album. It reminds me a lot of Close Your Eyes. As the outro, here NewJeans doesn't hint at it anymore, they show you that you're Alice, and that you're already well and deep within their beautifully fantastical wonderland. There's just enough horror elements in the MV to keep you alert even though everything about the song is meant to lull you into a dreamlike illusionary state. It feels childlike and nostalgic.

If it were up to me, I'd nominate Get Up for every Album of the Year award. And I have to give kudos to Ador for not just collaborating with PPG by borrowing their trademarked characters and visuals, (which is where most k-pop groups and companies would've stopped at), but by finding a way to incorporate even the PPG theme song into their music. Whoever realized that a nostalgic cartoon has one of the most recognizable beats in the Drum & Bass genre and thought to repurpose it in their music, that person should get a raise.

I'm aware k-pop stans have tabled their usual complaints, tried getting various controversies to stick, from claiming Min Heejin was pushing terrorism to claiming that Hoyeon (the respected South Korean actress most known from Squid Game) was involved in making porn in front of minors... thankfully, the facts won (in more sane corners of k-pop fandom) and none of that bullshit really stuck. Now the only complaint I'm still seeing around is that the songs are too short, but again, it just drives home the fact as I keep saying, k-pop stans really have no idea what they're talking about. It's one thing to wish the songs were longer for your own enjoyment, but one of the characteristics of the D&B and Garage genres is their length, because they are percussion-driven and repetitive, songs in those genres are typically shorter.

Also, aside from a handful of other girl groups, NewJeans is producing some of the most fun, interesting, and engaging choreographies I've seen in a hot minute.

Ador needs to be given their due. They know what they're doing and I hope they continue having the freedom and cash to fully flesh out each of the girls' talents in NewJeans, because all five girls are incredibly talented. I'd love for Jimin to work with them somehow, Yoongi too (both as a collaborator and in a production capacity). I'm looking forward to seeing more from them in every possible way.

Have you heard of the twincest in Cruel Intentions 2?

So, a movie was released back in 2000 called Cruel Intentions 2. It was direct to video prequel to the movie starring Sarah Michelle Geller and Ryan Phillipe as stepsiblings oozing sexual tension. All the roles were recast and it shows how their characters first met.

Right from the start, Kathryn and Sebastian don’t like each other but are still attracted to each other. Kathryn decides to manipulate Sebastian by having two of her friends strip naked and join him in the shower. (NSFW Warning) The two are played by real life sisters. The two start teasing him. Although they are obviously twins, they mess with him saying they are kissing cousins and proceed to kiss. Actually kiss on screen. Two real life twin sisters. nothing else happens and after some more dialogue they leave the shower. the guy then hears one outside saying “here sis, i’ll dry you off.”

Also, in a departure from the first film, where the step siblings relationship never goes beyond a kiss, at the end of the movie it’s implied they’ve entered into a polyamorous relationship with another girl.

Cruel Intentions 2 is such a strange movie because it kind of tells the same story but tells it very differently. It’s like an AU of the first movie, which is so unusual. Anyway, it’s worth mentioning that Kathryn and Sebastian aren’t stepsiblings in Cruel Intentions 2 but blood-related, if I remember correctly. I haven’t watched it in a long time. Am I making that up? I think I remember that.

💫what is your favorite kind of comment/feedback?

Honestly, I'm delighted by every kind of comment so I have...less of 'favorites' and more of 'kinds that stick out in my memory'? And those kinds are 1) 'reread' comments that state or imply that they're leaving this on their second+ time back (!!!), 2) the 'I am commenting on every chapter because I am very enthusiastic' comments that I am always so shy about replying to, and the 3) rambles. I REALLY adore rambles, because sometimes they're not very coherent, which I find just...really delightful and charming. They're just full of stuff that someone liked and give me a little glimpse into the person who left it.

🌈is there a fic that you worked *really fucking hard on* that no one would ever know? maybe a scene/theme you struggled with?

Oh, yes! The entire fic of Our Corners Start To Curving 'Til We Shine. It's set in the John Wick universe, but after the second movie and before the third, so it's a little older and I'm sure no longer canon compliant. It's all OCs since it was for a worldbuilding challenge and it's one of my shortest fics, too, so you wouldn't think it would be anything special, but it was a deliberate exercise in writing something short, sharp, and concise that was also a complete and finished story. At the time, those traits made the writing style an active departure from my regular style (...in 2018, wow. It feels like much longer ago.). I was stepping out of my comfort zone on purpose, and I'm deeply pleased about how it came out. Finishing it and polishing it up affected my writing style in a lot of ways, tbh, and made me a better writer in general. My fics before it are in some ways denser and more sprawling and my fics after it are planned tighter and with an eye toward using a limited page more effectively.

💞what’s the most important part of a story for you? the plot, the characters, the worldbuilding, the technical stuff (grammar etc), the figurative language

I think this is the double heart one that you mean! The most important bit, for me, is the interactions between characters. So a little bit of character, a little bit of plot, a little bit of dialogue, but most specifically all of it revolving around how characters respond and react to one another, because that's where I find the most crunch to explore when I write. There's a...it's sort of a vibrating tension between the lines/characters when I get it right, and that's something that I specifically chase whenever I'm setting words down on the page. When the note is hit just right, I can feel it like a shiver somewhere in the vicinity of my emotions, and I'm always hoping that it comes through even just a little to a reader.

🕯️how do you think engaging with each other through tumblr, twitter, comments, kudos, creates healthy fandom experiences? How do you deal with that if you’re not a social person/experience social anxiety?

(ETA: oh shit there are two candles? If you were thinking the other one, ping me and I'll answer that instead? Ahha.) Oh! This is such an interesting question (if a bit leading, lol, I hadn't noticed that before trying to answer it). I'm bad at interaction and engagement because I'm definitely in the 'shy' and 'tired' categories, but it's... I think interaction is a big part of what makes fic and fanart and other fandom stuff into play. I share things I'm enthusiastic about. I take them apart and put them together and tell stories about them and then save the results for later. I CAN do it on my own, and I honestly write more because I can't get ideas out of my head than I do because I need interaction about them, but it's a deliberate choice for me to make the Stuff I'm Getting Out Of My Head into something for the community. Because I want to participate in the sandbox everyone else is playing in, because that's where the people are, and I like people. Plus, half the fun is yes-anding, or finding someone with a wildly different interpretation that you think you could make something out of, or getting a new angle off of something you would never have thought of otherwise because of your particular lived experience vs their particular lived experience. Without interacting, you get YOU out of it, but you don't get anyone else, and I find a great deal of joy in the fact that other people are producing NEW stuff about a thing I love. So. The thing with me is that I'm super reserved, and the 'shy and tired' means I'm more likely to go 'ah, I simply cannot just now' and make a mental note to respond at some later date (andthenIdidn't_johnmulaney.gif). So I don't...honestly interact much as a creator. I interact way, way more as an audience member. Which, from the PoV of a creator, I think is pretty dang valuable, yanno? But I do what I can in a more...hrm. So, I reblog things I like, I comment when I have the bandwidth, and I don't stress about how I as an individual am somehow be responsible for aggregate trends in not commenting or something. All this is play: I join the game when I can and don't sweat when I can't. (I also have a vague tangent about how the ability to be seen and found by literally the whole world instead of a small niche subcommunity has made everything just...so much different, but I think that's for another time. :))

XANDER: Off the Runway ⇀ Episode 001 

it’s episode one, the one where ought to start off with a bang, but jisoo knows he should ease into it and not burn himself out with the first episode. this is a project that he is extremely excited to do and it’s a nice departure from the typical industry he works in. and nothing wrong with that, the model adores the clothes and fragrance, jewelry and makeup that he gets to work with, but he wanted a casual side, one where everyone could see what he was like at home. well, not really at home. that was a bit too personal. and he didn’t like displaying all of that for everyone to see. jisoo was a bit introverted, private, so while he does want to share parts of himself, it’s selective.

but hey, it doesn’t hurt taking the scene out of seoul. this explains why the staff and jisoo are both awake, at the very ungodly hour of anytime-before-5am, and on their way to jeongseon county, with an approximate ETA of 3 to 4 hours. eternally thankful that he doesn’t have to drive, he apologizes briefly to the cameraman who is filming, that it is very likely he may end up passing out for a large portion of the way there. which is promptly what occurs with the white and brown noise in the air with the travels there. 

but it’s no surprise to those who are familiar with the area, that there are some popular skiing regions in jeongseon and when the film makes its cut again, they’re at the skiing high1 resort and jisoo is dressed for the occasion, and with one of the instructors for his day trip of skiing at the resort. “i am a complete beginner, you guys! i’ve never had that much of a chance to do winter sports, with the exception of when i was a child back in canada and they dragged us to skate and skii, and sled for gym class. this will be a sincere blast to my childhood, but don’t feel too bad for me if i fall over, because it will probably happen a lot.”

they pan out to a scenic shot of the hills where no audio can really be heard but the view does have the instructor and jisoo in the shot, of him being shown how to do some of the rudimentary movements, and follow the leader, basically. and even then, the amount of strain that jisoo has to put on his body for this. it’s definitely a full body excercise. and no matter how many workouts someone does in the gym, when they’re out of their element and not doing their basic one-two-three routine, it’s a lot.

eventually, jisoo does get a shot where he comes down the hill ( the baby hill !!! ) successfully, he makes a victory whoop as he skids down to where the camera is, though his joy is short-lived as it pans directly to the next slope that is the next challenge. “already? maybe after a hot cocoa...”
