Detecting Storms Thanks to GPS - Technology Org
Researchers at ETH Zurich have succeeded in detecting heavy precipitation events directly with GPS data. The results of their study could significantly improve meteorological monitoring and forecasting.

An exceptionally severe storm swept over Zurich on 13 July 2021 shortly before 2 a.m.: howling squalls, constant lightning and torrential rain woke people up with a start. Benedikt Soja, Professor of Space Geodesy, also got little sleep that night. âIt was one of the most severe storms Iâve ever witnessed. I woke up in the middle of the night and could see the storm raging through the window,â he remembers.
The scale of the storm was evident the next morning â fallen trees on streets and in parks, damaged rooftops and overhead tram lines pulled down in various parts of Zurich. The ground in the vicinity of the Hönggerberg campus was also strewn with branches and even entire trees. âThe storm must have passed right over ETH,â says Soja.
GPS data outages
A GPS station on the roof of the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry on the Hönggerberg campus records the signals of various satellite systems around the clock. When examining the data of the night of the storm in more detail, Soja and his colleagues at the Institute couldnât believe their eyes. âThere were outages in the GPS data processing. We couldnât understand at first what had caused them,â says Matthias Aichinger-âRosenberger, a former postdoc in Sojaâs group and now a lecturer at ETH Zurich. When other stations also reported outages in the measurement of data from GPS and other satellite navigation systems for that night, the researchers started to analyse the raw data of the antenna on the Hönggerberg campus.

They were able to show in the study, which was published in the specialist journal external pageGeophysical Research Letterscall_made, that extreme weather events influence the quality of GPS signals and that these signals are therefore also suitable for detecting storms. It could one day even be possible to use them for the early detection and forecasting of thunderstorms.
The signal-âto-noise ratio dropped
The scientists drew their conclusions from the analysis of the data of the storm of 13 July and of another storm in the summer of 2021. It became evident that the extreme weather events had an impact on the signal-âto-noise ratio, which indicates how strong the satellite signals are that reach us on the earth. The higher the ratio, the better the quality of the signal.
âThe signal strength that we measure with our antenna on the roof normally only changes minimally,â says Aichinger-âRosenberger. However, this was not the case on the two storm days: âThe signal-âto-noise ratio in the GPS data dropped considerably at the time of the storm. We saw that once the storm had moved on it was back in its normal range.â
In order to determine the precise time of the stormâs arrival and to check whether this matched the time when the signal-âto-noise ratio dropped, the researchers compared their data with radar data of the University of Berne. âThis confirmed our suspicion that there was a direct connection,â said Aichinger-âRosenberger.
Was it heavy rain or hail?
The researchers are certain that heavy precipitation is responsible for the sudden drop in the signal-to-noise ratio. What is not clear is which type of precipitationârain or hailâhas a greater impact and why. The scientists wish to find out in the future.

As simple as the studyâs result may sound, it is a breakthrough for space geodesy research. âIt has never been proven yet that severe thunderstorms and other weather events with heavy precipitation significantly influence the signal-to-noise ratio,â says Aichinger Rosenberger. Until now, it has been assumed that GPS is a weather-independent system. Now, it appears that GPS data are sensitive enough to capture such atmospheric disturbances.
Forecasting precipitation more reliably
These findings could open up new prospects for the use of satellite navigation data in meteorology. âWe now wish to collect more measurements in order to improve the forecasting of precipitation in weather models,â says Soja. Reliable precipitation forecasting still remains a major challenge. âMany other meteorological parameters such as the temperature can now be predetermined quite well with numerical weather models. Unfortunately, however, such models are often not good enough in the case of precipitation.â
In order one day to make use of the ETH researchersâ findings for forecasting, they need to be brought into relation to a weather model. âIn order to transfer our observations to specific parameters such as the water and ice content in the air or the stormâs direction of movement, we need to collect and analyse further data. These findings could then be incorporated into a computer-âbased weather model in order to improve the forecasting of precipitation,â says Aichinger-âRosenberger.
More receivers needed for early detection
Storms still need to pass directly over the measuring station for GPS signals in order to be detected. Because the network of measuring stations is not sufficiently close-âknit, the method is not yet suitable for the early detection of storms. âIf, for example, we had thirty to forty stationary receivers around Zurich, we would be able to capture extreme weather events across the city accurately and also very cost-âeffectively,â explains Soja. âA dense network of stations could also be used to determine where storms are moving to and how fast.â
Such an early detection system could in future be used, for instance, to ensure safe air traffic, says Soja. âA dense network of GPS stations around the airport would enable a storm to be localised in real time and warnings to be issued to this effect.â
As well as refining the method, the scientists are also planning to expand their research work across Switzerland and at the European level, to enlarge their network accordingly. Although the severe storm in July 2021 caused a lot of local damage, it also enabled knowledge to be gained that could one day be applied globally.

for obvious reasons, that car ride changed everything.Â
itâs like a switch flips in your mind, a new experiment, a new challenge. youâre determined to push him. test him. see how far you can go without him snapping.
so, the week begins and you take notes. like a scientist, youâre methodical.Â
careful.
but your methods are anything but innocent.Â
you're testing him with everything you can think of: words, touches, close proximityâanything to see how he reacts.Â
and fuck, does he react.
when monday rolls around, you start subtle.Â
youâre sending him texts, clingy and cute, with just the right amount of affection to make his insides churn. youâre expecting a response, somethingâanything. but when the texts go unanswered for hours, your smile falters for just a second.Â
his replies come in cold, sparse, detached.
nerd [12:13PM]: uâre trying too hard nerd [12:18PM]: stfu for the rest of the day, yea?
on tuesday night, you attempt to perfect the art of being close without overdoing it.Â
itâs a delicate balanceâteasing the line between friendly and intimate, but you feel confident⊠partly because the circumstances are on your side. mentally, you thank jimin for inviting you over to join their movie night.Â
as you sit next to him on the couch, your body just a little too close, brushing against him ever so slightly. your shoulder presses against his, the fabric of your shirt grazing his skin.Â
itâs subtle, but itâs enough to make him feel the weight of your presence beside him. you watch him out of the corner of your eye, waiting for any sign, any reaction. his eyes stay glued to the screen, but you catch the subtle tension in his shoulders.Â
you can feel it in the way his muscles tighten, like heâs aware but is trying to pretend otherwise.
you donât pull away.Â
instead, you lean in further, your body pressing against his just a little bit more. you can feel the heat radiating from him, and it makes your heart race. you let your head gently rest on his shoulder, letting the weight of it fall naturally.
for a moment, his body is still, like heâs frozen in place. his breathing stays steady, controlled, but you can tell heâs aware. his jaw tightens ever so slightly, and you notice the way his fingers twitch, like theyâre itching to push you away, but he doesnât. his hand, though relaxed, sits just inches from yours, and you can almost feel the friction between the two of you, an invisible force keeping you both in place.
"are you serious?" he glares at you.
you take note that his voice is flat but tinged with something elseâlike heâs trying to convince himself this is all just a joke.
you smile, pretending to play innocent.Â
âwhat?â
â___âŠâ he warns. â⊠fuck. whatever.â
âyeah?â you tease. âwhatever? jungkook, iâm just sitting here, enjoying the movie," you say, tone light, as if thereâs nothing unusual about the way your body is pressed so close to his.
he shifts uncomfortably, but you can tell itâs not a total rejection.Â
his arm, once resting by his side, is now slightly tense, fingers flexing just a bit.Â
âyouâre really pushing it today," he adds, his voice gruff, but thereâs no real bite behind itâjust a hint of reluctant amusement. âthe guys will notice.â
you donât move.
you just stay there, head still resting against his shoulder, feeling the way his body stays taut beneath you.Â
âlet them.â
his jaw tightens again, but he doesnât push you away.Â
instead, his arm stiffens where it rests against the back of the couch, like heâs holding himself back.Â
âyou comfortable?â
âmhm,â you answer half-heartedly.Â
âwith me?" he says, raising an eyebrow as he looks at you sideways. "keep lying to yourself. you should quit this shit soon.â
you smile knowingly.
his words are harsher than he means them to be, but his body says otherwise. heâs not pulling away, not really. his chest rises and falls with a quiet exhale, and you can feel the warmth of his body seeping into yours.
âif itâs so shit, then you move." you murmur, pressing just a little closer.
he shakes his head, his hand twitching again like heâs about to do something, but he doesnât.Â
instead, he leans his head back against the couch and tries to focus on the movie. you can tell heâs trying to hide the way his breath catches whenever you get too close, but you notice it all the same.
the silence settles, but it's different now.Â
youâre closer, and you can feel the way the tension thickens. he doesnât push you away, and he doesnât pull closer, but his body is no longer stiff.Â
thereâs a slight shiftâa crack in the armor, just enough for you to know youâre making progress.
when wednesday arrives, the tension between you and jungkook shifts. you can feel it in the airâa subtle change, like a shift in the current. youâve pushed him just enough that now, you know heâs starting to feel something.Â
maybe itâs curiosity, maybe irritation, but whatever it is, itâs there.Â
and thatâs when you go for it.
youâve intruded his home for the 2nd time this week (thank you yoongi for the emergency key). youâre standing behind him as he fiddles with something at the counter. you glance at him, making sure the space between you is just close enough that you can brush up against him without making it too obvious.Â
you take your time as you lean across the counter to grab a mug.Â
the movement is slow and deliberate. you make sure your boobs brush against his arm as you do. heâs taller than you so no matter what; itâs inevitable.Â
heâll see what you intend for him to see.
itâs casual like youâre just going about your business⊠but you watch him carefully, studying his reaction. his body stiffens for the briefest second. his eyes flicker, narrowing, before he quickly schools his features again, turning away slightly.Â
but you see itâyou feel the way his jaw tightens, the way his shoulders shift.Â
itâs all there, even though he tries to play it cool.
you donât move away.Â
instead, you linger just a little longer, standing closer than you need to, your body just a bit too close to his. you watch as his eyes flicker, the smallest hint of frustration in his gaze, before it softens into something you canât quite place.Â
maybe itâs confusion. maybe itâs something more.
âyou look handsome today,â you say, the words slipping out with that playful, almost too-casual tone. though your voice is light, thereâs a little challenge in it. you know how it sounds, and you know itâs enough to get under his skin.
for a moment, thereâs a beat of silence.Â
he doesnât flinch.Â
doesnât even look at you directly.Â
⊠but you can feel the weight of his gaze on you, and when you glance at him, you see his lips pressed together tightly. his face is impassive, but you know better. heâs holding back, trying to keep it together.
âcut it out,â he utters under his breath.Â
itâs not the sharp command you expect, though. itâs more like a warning. like, heâs not sure what to do with the way youâre pushing him. his gaze flickers down to your lips for a fraction of a second before he quickly looks away.
you grin, knowing youâve struck a nerve.Â
then, you pull back just slightly, but you donât move too far. you keep your body close, letting the space between you linger with tension. slowly, your eyes flicker to his, catching the way his gaze darts between your eyes and lips, and the flicker of hesitation in his expression.
you know itâs working.Â
the coldness is a mask, a shield, but itâs starting to crack. the way his body tightens ever so slightly, the way his breath hitches for a fraction of a second, itâs all the proof you need. heâs trying to pretend heâs not affected, but you can see through it.
innocently, you tilt your head, studying him.Â
"whatâs wrong, jungkook?" you ask, your tone dripping with false sweetness. "did i make you uncomfortable? or just horny?â
he looks at you for a long moment, his eyes narrowing again, but you see the shift in him.Â
heâs not as cold as he wants to be.Â
thereâs something softer in the way he looks at you now, the way his shoulders relax just a little. but the silence stretches between you, and you can feel the unspoken words beginning to weigh in.
jungkook stays quiet but the tension is undeniable, and you knowâyou knowâheâs not as unaffected as he wants to be.
on thursday, you decide to be a menace.
the timing has to be perfect, so you wait outside jungkookâs lecture hall, pretending to be on your phone.Â
when the doors open, students file out in waves, and there he isâblack hoodie, backpack slung over one shoulder, looking as effortlessly cool as ever. heâs walking with a few of his classmates, casually chatting. you wait until heâs just a few feet away before stepping into his path.
the bump is perfectly orchestrated.Â
your shoulder brushes his, and your notebook, pens, and phone all tumble to the ground with an exaggerated clatter.
âoh noâŠâ you sigh dramatically, crouching down immediately to gather your scattered belongings. jungkook stops, his classmates following suit, their conversation halting as they glance at you and then down at your outfitâa fitted crop top and a tiny skirt that rides up a little too much when you kneel.
you hear a low whistle from one of the guys behind jungkook.
âdamn,â someone murmurs, and thatâs all it takes for him to snap.Â
his jaw tightens as he bends down next to you, shoving your phone and notebook into a messy pile before grabbing your forearm, and making you stand.
âseriously?â he mutters, glancing behind him at his classmates, who are still ogling. âyou couldnât wait to drop all this somewhere without an audience?â
you blink innocently, brushing off your skirt as you stand.Â
âit was an accident,â you pout at him. âbut thanks for helping.â
his glare softens, but only slightly. he bends down again, this time crouching low and deliberately blocking the view of his classmates as he picks up your things.
âwanna introduce me to your nerd friendsââ
when he straightens up, he thrusts the pile into your hands, but before you can even say anything, he asks, âwhere are you going?â
you hesitate, taken aback by the question. âuh, the other side of campus...â
jungkook doesnât miss a beat.Â
âiâll walk you.â
âreally?â you say, surprised, but already grinning. he looks like he regrets offering the second the words leave his mouth, but he doesnât take it back. âyou donât have to. did you have a meeting or something with your marine conservation club?âÂ
he tilts his head at you.Â
âwhat? iâm not mr. save the dolphins today? your tiny brain actually remembers my club name?â
you shrug.
âiâm not that dumb.â
âso you say,â he grumbles. âbut yeah. i do have a meeting. iâll just attend it late.â
gasping, you let out a last-minute squeal. âmr. perfect attendance is tarnishing his rep for me?â
âitâs fine,â he says flatly, glancing back at his friends and muttering something about catching up with them later. before you can tease any further, heâs taking your notebook and phone from your hands, tucking them under his arm as if itâs his duty now.
as the two of you walk, you chatter away, filling the silence.Â
normally, heâd roll his eyes or tell you to be quiet, but today, he listens.Â
he nods occasionally, even hums in acknowledgment, though his eyes are straight ahead, his expression carefully neutral. you canât help but notice, though, the way his hand finds its way to your waistâlightly at first, almost hesitant, but then it lingers, his fingers splayed across your side as though keeping you close.
and then, as if his subconscious takes over, his hand slips lower, brushing against the curve of your ass. your steps falter for a moment, and you turn to look at him, a teasing smile tugging at your lips.
âjungkook?â you say, arching a brow. ây-your handâŠâ
he blinks, glances down, and quickly pulls his hand back, shoving it into the pocket of his hoodie as it burns him.Â
âshut up,â he hushes you, his ears turning red. "you wanna act like an ass? at least give me some."
you laugh, loud and unapologetic, and he glares at you, his lips pressed into a thin line.Â
but you notice the way his shoulders are less tense now, the faint hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. he doesnât say anything as he walks you the rest of the way, carrying your things like itâs the most natural thing in the world.
on friday, you leave him alone.
no texts, no calls, and no showing up.
by 2pm; jeon jungkook realizes he misses you.
so, jungkook caves.
nerd [3:02PM]: wya? nerd [3:04PM]: come over :/ yn [3:08PM]: hiii yn [3:08PM]: what for ? nerd [3:09PM]: sent image attachment nerd [3:09PM]: figure it out ?
you donât see jungkook until saturday night.
⊠which, isnât too bad considering it wouldâve just been like⊠a day and half since he last saw youâbut it was bad.Â
jungkook ran through all the possibilities in his head.Â
could he be sick?
could he be undergoing some sort of unconscious stress thatâs leading him to feel this way about you?Â
or⊠was it finally time for him to accept the truth?
when the doorbell rings, jungkook wants to answer it.Â
but he stops himself.
he isnât easy.Â
he doesnât want to be.Â
instead, he lets one of the guys answer it.Â
as you walk into the room, youâre greeted with the view of the guys are lounging around, a few beers and snacks spread across the coffee table. jungkook is in his usual spot, slouched in the corner of the couch, his hood up, legs stretched out like he owns the place.
he looks up when you enter, his dark eyes flicking to yours for just a second before darting away, as if the sight of you doesnât make his heart trip over itself. you catch the subtle change in his postureâhe straightens ever so slightly, his legs pulling in just a bit, his shoulders losing their slump.
âhi,â you call out, your voice light and warm as you shrug off your coat.
he nods at you, keeping his face neutral.Â
âhey,â he replies, the word coming out gruff, almost dismissive, but you donât miss the way his gaze lingers as you move to take a seat.Â
you plop down on the couch next to him, close enough that your thigh brushes his. he stiffens at the contact, his hand twitching where it rests on his knee, but he doesnât shift away.
âmad at me?â you tease, tilting your head to look at him, your lips quirking into a grin.
he looks at you funny.Â
âwhy would i be?â
you shrug.
âyou arenât greeting me like the way i want you to.â
he leans forward. âhow do you want me to greet you?â
you pause, pretending to take a moment to think. then, you take his hand and gently place it on your upper inner thigh. his eyes widen and you stroke his hand gently.Â
âwannaââ
he scoffs, his expression carefully guarded. jungkook catches your bluff.
âgod, youâre annoying.â
yet, the corner of his mouth betrays him, twitching upward just a little.
you giggle and then push his hand off.Â
the banter is effortless, the tension between you subtle but electric.Â
throughout the evening, youâre all warmth and light, leaning into him when you laugh, your hand brushing his arm or shoulder every chance you get. at first, jungkook attempts to resist.Â
his replies are short and his eyes anywhere but on you⊠but as the hours slip by, you feel him softening, his walls starting to crack just enough for you to sneak through.
then comes the game of mafia.
the group gathers around the coffee table, cards dealt, and jungkook ends up as the supposed villain. the accusations start flying almost immediately.
âyouâre way too quiet, man,â taehyung declares, pointing at jungkook with a dramatic flourish. âyouâve got âmafiaâ written all over you.â
jin chimes in, grinning. âyeah, itâs always the quiet ones. plus, look at himâheâs sweating.â
âiâm not sweating,â jungkook snaps, sitting up straighter, his jaw tightening. âiâm wearing a fucking hoodie and you guys turned up the heat. you're all so fucking bad at this game, you've all been sabotaging me physically!â
the others laugh, piling on more ridiculous accusations. even you canât help but join in, a mischievous grin tugging at your lips.
âsorry, jungkook,â you say, shrugging with mock innocence. âyou do look kind of guilty.â
his eyes snap to yours, and for a moment, something raw flickers thereâhurt, maybe, or frustration. his lips part like heâs about to say something, but instead, he pushes back his chair and stands abruptly.
âwhat the fuck do you know, ___?â
old habits die hard.
âchill,â yoongi warns. âitâs just a game.â
âwhatever,â jungkook says, his voice clipped. âthis gameâs stupid anyway.â
without another word, he turns and storms off, leaving the room in stunned silence. the sound of his bedroom door slamming echoes.
the group exchanges awkward glances before taehyung leans toward you with a teasing smirk.Â
âour boyfriend is in a mood⊠what should we do?â
jin chuckles. â___, you should probably go check on him before he sulks himself into oblivion.â
rolling your eyes, you push yourself up from the couch.Â
âheâs so dramatic,â you chime, but thereâs a softness to your voice as you head up the stairs and down the hall towards his room.Â
a part of you hesitates⊠partly because of the event that occurred the last time you were here. but, you shrug it off. as you stand before his door, you raise your fist to knock but abruptly, he swings his door open.
âwhat do you want?â
âhowâd you knowââ
âyouâve got heavy ass fucking feet.â
you hiss at him. âyah, sore loser energy does not look good on you.â
opening the door wider, you step inside. he huffs and sits on the edge of his bed. with his hood still up, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, he glares at you with a mix of irritation and something elseâsomething softer.
âdid they send you up here to check up on me? what did they bribe you with this time?â
ânothing actually,â you answer him truthfully. âiâve got my own motivations.â
jungkook canât help but crack half a smile.Â
âlike what?â
you lean against the doorframe, crossing your arms with a small, knowing smile. âwouldnât you like to know?â
before he lets himself enjoy this moment, his jaw tightens, and he looks away. his gaze fixes on the floor.Â
âwhyâd you turn on me?â he huffs, his voice quieter now, almost vulnerable.
you push off the doorframe, stepping closer.
âitâs just a game, jungkook,â you say gently, your voice deliberately soft. âyouâre not actually mad, are you?â
his shoulders tense, a flicker of something crossing his faceâannoyance, maybe, but thereâs something deeper underneath. his hands clench into fists on his thighs, the muscles in his forearms flexing as though heâs trying to ground himself.
âitâs not the game,â he finally says, his voice barely above a whisper, rough and raw like it was dragged out of him against his will.
you blink, caught off guard by the weight of his tone. âthen what is it?â
his jaw tightens, and for a moment, he doesnât answer. his fingers twitch at his sides, and then heâs dragging a hand through his hair, pushing back his hood. his hair falls messily over his forehead, but he doesnât fix it. when his eyes finally meet yours, itâs like being hit with a tidal waveâanger, frustration, and something else that makes your breath catch.
âyou.â
your heart stutters in your chest, but you keep your composure, tilting your head slightly. âme?â
he exhales sharply, shaking his head like heâs trying to find the right words.
âyou play too much.â
his voice is rough but lacking its usual sharpness.
âyou get in my head⊠and then you justââ he cuts himself off, the frustration rolling off him in waves. his leg bounces slightly, and his hands grip his thighs again, knuckles pale from the tension.
âyou donât even care,â he says finally, his voice quieter now, almost like he doesnât want to admit it. âwhat the fuck were you doing to me all week? experimenting or some shit? fuck, isnât your major psychology or something? youâre basically being trained to be a psycho.â
the jab stings, but you ignore it. instead, your chest tightens at his words, the vulnerability heâs trying so hard to bury beneath his irritation. you take a step closer, your knees almost brushing his.
âi do care,â you say softly, reaching out, your fingers brushing against his knuckles.
his gaze drops to where your fingers touch his, and for a moment, heâs completely still, like he doesnât know what to do. then, slowly, his hand turns over, palm-up, brushing against yours with a hesitance that makes your chest ache.
âthen can you stop messing with me?â
thereâs something about his toneâabout the way he says this. his words are one thing, but the ache of his deliverance is completely something else.
âi wasnât messing with you,â you whisper, your gaze locked on his.
his lips part slightly, and his breathing is uneven as his eyes search your face, like heâs looking for somethingâan answer, a hint, anything.
âthen what are you doing?â
you lean in, closing the distance just enough that you can feel the heat radiating off him. your smile is soft, almost teasing, but thereâs a weight behind it.
âmaking you want me.â
jungkook is good.Â
you have no idea how or why, but your underwear and skirt are on the other side of his bedroom floor.Â
your legs are spread wide for him, as he licks his fingers and begins to gently drag it inside your folds. he separates them before lowering himself in. he looks at you, not breaking any eye contact as he flicks his tongue against your clit.Â
you clench your fist.Â
after a few licks and sucks, he lifts his head away. he brings his fingers to your mouth, cueing you to suck on them.Â
you do.Â
as he places his thick fingers inside, you part your mouth and suck on them. bobbing your head and twisting your tongue around his digits as you suckâjungkook winces at the way you do so.Â
âfuck,â he utters.Â
as he takes his fingers out, he begins to massage your folds. his pressure is firm yet pleasurable. his fingers trace around your entrance and play with your clit. you feel your toes curling as he breathes near your pussy.Â
it pulsates.Â
he canât help it. the view is just too fucking perfect. jungkook massages your folds, spreading them a part before he spits on it. he takes his thumb and rubs in his saliva. massaging it in, slowly and surelyâmixing it with your wetness.Â
âgood kitty,â jungkook praises. âyour pretty pussy is swelling up, ___. whatâs going on? excited? horny? happy? youâre so wet, baby. so fuckingâdo you hear it?â
jungkook shoves his fingers inside you, curling and pumping them in and out. you gasp at the sharpness but feel completely immersed in his act.Â
.. and yes.
you do hear it.
you hear how wet your fucking pussy is.
âo-oh my god! j-jungkookââ
âyeah, baby?â
your stomach twists.Â
âd-donâtâstop. stop calling meââ
âsorry,â he apologizes quickly, shifting his body to tower over you. he caresses your face, his thumb lingering on your bottom lip. then, he kisses your cheek and trails his kisses down to your neck. you moan at his softness.Â
heâs so close to you. itâs only now that you realize how addictive he is.. from the way he smells to the way his touches make you feelâŠ
heâs perfect.
in this moment, he is everything to you.
âsorry,â he repeats against your skin. âiâm sorry, kitty.â
you gulp.Â
âdo you forgive me?â he pouts, resting his forehead against yours. âhmm? forgive me, please.â
âi forgive you,â you breathe. âc-can youââ
just as you reach for him, he shakes his head.Â
âcanât kiss you,â jungkook sighs. âwonât know how to get rid of you after.â
you smile.Â
âyou wanna get rid of me after this?â
jungkook stays quiet.Â
you shift.Â
âno.â
just as jungkook leans in, your lips inches a partâ
the door suddenly creaks open.
a girlâsomeone you didnât recognizeâsteps halfway in, her hand still on the doorknob, her brows lifting in surprise when she sees the two of you.
her eyes darts between your flushed face and jungkook.
âoh, shit! uhâsorry,â she says quickly, taking a step back but still lingering awkwardly in the doorway. âi didnât know you had a tutoring session before mine... iâll, um, come back later, then? sorry to interrupt.â
before you can even process her words, sheâs gone, the door clicking shut behind her. the sound left a hollow sort of silence in its wake like the air had been sucked out of the room.
you blink at the now-closed door, the words tutoring session before mine looping in your head like a broken record. your chest tightens, heat crawls up your neck as you turn back to jungkook.Â
his expression is already shifting, panic bleeding into his features.
you shift your body entirely, pushing him off you.
âwait,â he starts, âshit, ___. itâs not like thatââ
âokay,â you say flatly.Â
you get up from his bed and grab your underwear and skirt. yanking them on, your movements frustrate jungkook.Â
he doesnât know what to do.Â
in any and every angleâheâs in the wrong.
âiâm sorry, okay?â he tries again, stepping closer. his voice was softer now, almost pleading. âit wasnâtâi didnât know sheâd just barge in like that. i thought the door was lockedââ
you shove past him, your shoulder brushing his as you make your way toward the door. you could feel the pressure building behind your eyes, a sick mix of anger and humiliation clawing at your throat.
âwaitââ his hand shot out, grabbing your wrist, but you ripped it free, spinning around to glare at him.
âdonât.â
â___, pleaseââ
âitâs not about whether or not the door was lockedââ you choke, âitâs⊠fuck. tutoring session, really? is that what i am right now? is that what she isââ
âno,â jungkook answers sternly. âholy fuck, please. letâs talk about thisââhis jaw tightened, and for a moment, he looked like he was about to let you go, to just let you leave. but then he took a step forward, his voice sharp and cuttingâ
â___, what did you want from me?â
you freeze, your hand still on the doorknob, your back to him. the words hit you like a slap, knocking the wind out of you.
jungkook takes a chance.Â
he steps closer to you.Â
â... because, honestly, i donât think you even know.â
you stay quiet.Â
jungkook clears his throat.Â
âwell, fuck. if you donât know, then itâs not my fault,â he says, his tone hard now, defensive. âyou can't want things from me and then not know how to handle shit, ___. you donât get to make me another one of your fucking situationships. you wanted me to want you and thisâholy shit. this isn't my fault. itâs yoursââ
suddenly, your palm connects with his cheek before you even realize it. the sound of the slap reverberates in the room. his head jerked to the side, and for a moment, he just stands there, stunned.
your hand stung, your chest heaving as you stared at him, your vision blurring at the edges.
âi hate you.â
â___, iâm sorryââ
but itâs too late.Â
you donât even bother looking back as you storm out of jungkookâs room, your chest heaving with a mix of anger and humiliation. the tears are already burning at the corners of your eyes, but you blink them back, determined not to let them fall. your feet carry you down the hall, towards the stairs, your vision blurry with rage.
âwaitââ jungkookâs voice echoes behind you, followed by the thud of his footsteps as he chases after you. he hustles, dressing himself as he goes after you.
âfuck off!â you snap, your voice trembling but firm.
he doesnât listen.Â
of course, he doesnât.Â
âholy shitâplease! ___, stop. just fucking hear me outââ he pleads, his tone exasperated, like he doesnât know what else to say.
âstop?â you spin around halfway down the stairs, glaring up at him. âstop what, jungkook? stop assuming? stop feeling humiliated? stopââ
your voice cracks, and you hate how raw it sounds.
âwhatever.â
jungkook freezes on the step above you, his lips parted as if heâs going to respond, but nothing comes out.
you donât wait for him to gather his words.Â
you turn back and keep walking, practically jogging down the last few steps and into the living room where everyone else is. their laughter dies down the second they see youâflustered, teary-eyed, and furiousâfollowed immediately by jungkook chasing after you.
âuh, whatâs happening?â namjoon asks, his eyebrows raised as he glances between you and jungkook.
âare you two fighting?â jinâs tone is a mix of concern and curiosity, his head tilting as he watches the scene unfold.
"fuck," jungkook groans. "no shit, hyung."
âguys, letâs all chill,â taehyung interjects, raising his hands like a referee. âweâre all friends hereââ
âheâs no friend.â you cut him off, your voice sharp and laced with emotion. youâre trembling now, fighting the tears that threaten to spill over.Â
the room goes silent.
even taehyung, who was halfway through a casual shrug, stops mid-gesture. everyoneâs eyes dart to jungkook, whose expression shifts from startled to pained in a split second.
âwhat am i to you, then?â jungkook asks, his voice low but audible enough in the tense quiet. he takes a step toward you, his hand reaching out before falling limply to his side.Â
you donât answer.Â
you just shake your head, the tears finally breaking free as you turn on your heel and head for the door. the air feels suffocating, and you need to get out of there before your emotions betray you any further.
âwaitââ jungkookâs voice cracks, and for a moment, it sounds like heâs desperate. he jogs after you again, his hand catching your wrist just as youâre about to reach the front door.
âwhy the fuck are you so pissed about this?â jungkook cries. âholy shit, youâre infuriating. you know that?â
âare you done?â you ask him coldly.Â
a beat.Â
âdo you want me to be?â

The Father's Heart
PAIRING:Pedro Pascal x reader
WORD COUNT: 2076| requests are open (send requests, I will gladly answer them all)
Pedro Pascal Masterlist

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the cozy kitchen. Y/n hummed softly as she flipped pancakes, the sizzle a comforting counterpoint to the gentle chatter of her family. Pedro sat at the kitchen island, scrolling through his phone, a thoughtful frown creasing his brow. Their youngest, Leo, a whirlwind of energy at eight years old, was attempting to build a tower out of cereal boxes, while their middle child, Mateo, fourteen and perpetually attached to his headphones, mumbled something about needing more syrup. Elena, their eldest, sixteen going on seventeen, was the last to arrive, a vision of effortless cool even in her pajamas.
"Morning, sleepyhead," Y/n greeted, placing a stack of pancakes in front of Elena.
"Morning, Mom," Elena mumbled, giving her mother a quick kiss on the cheek. She glanced at Pedro, a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes, before grabbing a fork and digging in.
Pedro watched her, his frown deepening. Heâd been doing some thinking, some serious thinking, and he wasn't entirely sure he liked where his thoughts were leading him. He cleared his throat.
"Elena," he began, his voice carefully neutral.
Elena looked up, a question in her eyes.
"Your⊠friend, Ethan," Pedro continued, choosing his words carefully. "He's coming over later, right?"
Elena nodded, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Yeah, he said he'd be here around two."
"Two," Pedro repeated, the word hanging in the air. He glanced at Y/n, who gave him a subtle âdonât you dareâ look. He ignored it. He was a father. It was his job.
"So," Pedro continued, "what exactly are you two planning on doing?"
Elenaâs flush deepened. "Just⊠hanging out," she mumbled, avoiding his gaze.
"Hanging out," Pedro repeated again, the words laced with suspicion. "Doing what, exactly?"
"Dad!" Elena exclaimed, her voice rising in exasperation. "We're just going to watch a movie or something. Maybe work on our history project."
"History project," Pedro echoed, unconvinced. He knew teenagers. Heâd been one himself, a lifetime ago. "What's this project about?"
"The French Revolution," Elena replied quickly, a little too quickly, Pedro thought.
"The French Revolution," he repeated, nodding slowly. "Interesting. Tell me, Elena, what was the primary cause of the French Revolution?"
Elena blinked, caught off guard. "Uh⊠economic inequality?" she stammered.
"And the Reign of Terror?" Pedro pressed.
Elenaâs eyes darted around the room. "Robespierre⊠guillotine⊠lots of people died?"
Pedro sighed. "Elena, Iâm not trying to grill you on your history project. I just⊠I want to know what youâre doing. I want to know who youâre spending your time with."
"Dad, I know you don't like Ethan," Elena said, her voice low.
"I didn't say that," Pedro countered, though it wasn't entirely true. He didn't dislike Ethan, exactly. He just⊠he was sixteen. Sixteen and full of⊠hormones. And Elena was his little girl. Always would be.
"You don't have to say it," Elena retorted. "I can tell. Youâre always giving him the âlookâ."
Pedro knew exactly what âlookâ she was talking about. The âI will disembowel you if you even think about breaking my daughterâs heartâ look. It was a work in progress, heâd admit.
"Elena," Y/n interjected gently, "your father just cares about you. He wants to make sure youâre safe and happy."
"I know, Mom," Elena said, her voice softening. "But I'm not a little kid anymore. I can make my own decisions."
"About some things, yes," Pedro said, "But some things⊠some things your mother and I still get a say in."
"Like what?" Elena challenged.
"Like⊠like who you spend time with," Pedro said. "Like⊠making sure youâre not getting into any trouble."
"Dad, I'm not going to get into trouble," Elena said, rolling her eyes.
"I know, honey," Pedro said, reaching across the island to take her hand. "I trust you. I do. But⊠Ethan⊠heâs a nice boy, Iâm sure. But heâs still⊠young."
"So am I!" Elena exclaimed.
"Thatâs my point," Pedro said. "You're both still figuring things out. And I just⊠I don't want you to get hurt."
"Dad, everyone gets hurt sometimes," Elena said. "That's just part of life."
"I know," Pedro said softly. "But I donât want you to get hurt unnecessarily. I donât want you to make any mistakes youâll regret later."
"I won't," Elena promised, though Pedro could see the flicker of doubt in her eyes.
"Okay," Pedro said, finally relenting. "Okay. Ethan can come over. But," he added, pointing a finger at her, "the French Revolution better be discussed. And," he added, glancing at Mateo, who had finally removed his headphones and was listening intently, "no funny business."
Mateo snorted. "Dad, please."
"Iâm serious," Pedro said, his gaze sweeping over all three of his children. "I love you all. More than anything in the world. And Iâll do anything to protect you. Even if it means being the overprotective dad."
Elena smiled, a genuine smile that reached her eyes. "I know, Dad," she said. "We love you too."
The tension in the room dissipated, replaced by a warm, comfortable silence. Y/n smiled at her family, a feeling of contentment washing over her. They weren't perfect, not by a long shot. But they were hers. And she wouldn't trade them for anything.
Later that afternoon, Ethan arrived, a shy, lanky boy with a mop of brown hair and a nervous smile. Pedro greeted him at the door, his âlookâ firmly in place. Ethan swallowed nervously, but managed a polite "Hello, Mr. Pascal."
"Ethan," Pedro replied, offering a curt nod. "Come in."
He led Ethan into the living room, where Elena was waiting. "Hey," she said, giving Ethan a quick hug.
"Hey," Ethan replied, his cheeks turning a delicate shade of pink.
Pedro watched them, his eyes narrowed slightly. He cleared his throat. "So," he said, "the French Revolution, huh? Big topic."
Ethan blinked. "Uh, yeah. We have a presentation to do."
"A presentation," Pedro repeated. "Interesting. What aspect of the French Revolution are you focusing on?"
Ethan looked at Elena, who gave him an encouraging smile. "Weâre looking at the role of women in the revolution," he said.
"The role of women," Pedro repeated. "Fascinating. Did you know that Marie AntoinetteâŠ"
And so began a lengthy discussion about the French Revolution, with Pedro occasionally interjecting with historical facts and anecdotes. Ethan, to his credit, held his own, demonstrating a surprising knowledge of the subject. Elena, meanwhile, seemed amused by the whole exchange, occasionally rolling her eyes at her fatherâs over-the-top protectiveness.
As the afternoon wore on, Pedroâs âlookâ softened. He could see that Ethan was a respectful young man, and that he genuinely cared about Elena. He still had his reservations, of course. But he was starting to realize that he couldn't protect Elena from everything. All he could do was offer her guidance, support, and unconditional love.
Eventually, it was time for Ethan to leave. "Thank you for having me, Mr. Pascal," he said politely.
"Youâre welcome, Ethan," Pedro replied, offering a genuine smile. "Just⊠take care of her."
Ethan nodded. "I will, sir."
He turned to Elena, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek. "Iâll see you tomorrow," he said.
"See ya," Elena replied, a soft smile playing on her lips.
After Ethan left, Pedro turned to Elena. "He seems like a nice young man," he said.
Elena nodded. "He is," she said.
"Just⊠be careful," Pedro said.
"I will, Dad," Elena promised. "I know youâre just trying to protect me."
Pedro smiled. "Thatâs my job," he said.
He pulled Elena into a hug, holding her close. She was growing up so fast. It seemed like just yesterday she was a little girl, playing with dolls and dreaming of being a princess. Now, she was a young woman, navigating the complexities of life and love. And he, her father, would be there for her every step of the way.
Later that evening, after the kids were in bed, Pedro and Y/n found themselves alone in the kitchen, the quiet hum of the refrigerator the only sound. Y/n was washing dishes, while Pedro leaned against the counter, a thoughtful expression on his face.
"So," Y/n said, breaking the silence, "what did you think of Ethan?"
Pedro sighed. "He seems⊠polite. Respectful. Nice enough."
"But?" Y/n prompted, knowing there was a âbutâ coming.
Pedro hesitated. "But he's still sixteen. And Elena⊠she's my little girl. It feels like just yesterday I was teaching her how to ride her bike, and now⊠now she's dating."
Y/n chuckled. "I know what you mean. It's hard to believe how quickly they grow up. It feels like just yesterday we were bringing her home from the hospital."
Pedro nodded, a wistful look in his eyes. "She was so tiny. So fragile. And now⊠she's this beautiful, intelligent young woman. And I just⊠I don't want anything to hurt her."
"I know, honey," Y/n said softly, drying her hands and turning to face him. "But you can't protect her from everything. She has to learn to navigate these things on her own. We can guide her, support her, but we can't shield her from the world."
"I know," Pedro said, running a hand through his hair. "It's just⊠it's hard. Seeing her with him⊠it makes me realize how much time has passed. How quickly she's growing up."
"I feel it too," Y/n admitted. "But that's a good thing, isn't it? It means we've done our job. We've raised her to be a strong, independent young woman."
"I hope so," Pedro said. "I just⊠I don't want her to make any mistakes she'll regret."
"She will make mistakes, Pedro," Y/n said gently. "Everyone does. The important thing is that she learns from them. And that she knows we'll be there for her, no matter what."
Pedro nodded, his gaze softening. "Youâre right. You always are."
He reached out and took her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers. "Thank you," he said. "For everything. For being such an amazing mother to our children. For⊠for putting up with me."
Y/n smiled. "Youâre not so bad," she teased. "Most of the time."
Pedro chuckled. "I love you," he said, pulling her close.
"I love you too," Y/n replied, resting her head on his chest.
They stood there for a moment, wrapped in each other's arms, the silence once again filled with a comfortable warmth. They knew that the road ahead wouldn't always be easy. There would be challenges, and heartbreaks, and maybe even a few French Revolution debates. But they would face them together, as a family. And that's all that mattered.
A few weeks later, Pedro found himself having another conversation with Elena, this time about her future. She had been accepted to a summer program for aspiring writers, a program that would take her out of state for six weeks. Pedro was⊠hesitant.
"Six weeks?" he repeated, his brow furrowed. "That's a long time."
"I know, Dad," Elena said, "But it's an amazing opportunity. It could really help me with my writing."
"I know, honey," Pedro said. "It's just⊠I'll miss you."
Elena smiled. "I'll miss you too, Dad. But it's only six weeks. And I'll call you every day."
"I know, I know," Pedro said. "It's just⊠you're growing up so fast. It feels like just yesterday you were asking me to read you bedtime stories."
Elena laughed. "I still like you to read me stories sometimes," she admitted.
Pedro smiled. "I know you do," he said. "And I always will. No matter how old you get."
He looked at her, his eyes filled with love and pride. She was so talented, so passionate. He knew he couldn't hold her back.
"Okay," he said finally. "You can go. But," he added, pointing a finger at her, "you better call me every day. And," he added, his gaze softening, "be careful. Okay?"
"I will, Dad," Elena promised. "I love you."
"I love you too, sweetheart," Pedro said, pulling her into a hug.
He knew that letting her go was the right thing to do. It was part of growing up, part of becoming her own person. And as much as it pained him to see her go, he knew that he had to let her fly. All he could do was be there for her, waiting for her return, ready to catch her if she fell. Because that's what fathers do. They protect. They guide. And they love. Unconditionally. Always.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FAQs (Expanded)
What is the "Original Legends" tag?
Original Legends is a tag for fan creations in the LoZ community who are telling stories about Hyrules thus unseen. So, not based on any particular game but on the franchise as a whole. Generally, the current definition of Original Legends go-eth thusly:
Stories following original Links, Zeldas, and/or Ganons in tales that could be their own games. Those aren't limited to adventure or fantasy stories, but they do need to be original stories for their cast.
Are there any exceptions to works you will include?
There are currently three exceptions to Original Legends works we'll include in the archive:
Links Meets (unless it is entirely Original Legends)
Immediate sequels/prequels to canon stories (Looking for about a 100 year/generational gap between characters)
"Coffee shop" AUs (Works that are Original Legends by nature of how severe the genre changes it, but still use existing cast)
Crossovers with other franchises. This is for tag organization purposes
These exceptions are in place until Original Legends is a better established tag and may be removed in the future.
Are there limits on genre? Nope! Any genre or AU so long as it's a new story.
Do you accept submissions?
Absolutely! This helps a whole ton. You can send them in via the blog's ask and submission box or by hopping on the EH Discord.
What is Expanding Hyrule's stance on AI?
The archive will not include work that uses AI in any capacity.
Can I join the community even if Iâm not an Original Legends creator?
You absolutely don't need to be a creator, you just need to be interested in original legends.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We would like to note that while Expanding Hyrule itself will only block people for directly harassing the archive, our team is entitled to moderate their personal online experiences as they see fit, which may result in reduced visibility with our team.

Engineers have developed a device that can generate temperatures of over 1000°C (1832°F) by efficiently capturing energy from the sun. It could one day be used as a green alternative to burning fossil fuels in the production of materials such as steel, glass and cement. Manufacturing these materials involves heating raw materials to above 1000°C by burning fossil fuels, which is extremely energy intensive. âAbout half of the energy we use is not actually turned into electricity,â says Emiliano Casati at ETH Zurich in Switzerland. âItâs used to produce many of the materials that we need in our daily lives and our industries.â
[...]
While this is just a proof-of-concept device, Casati hopes that it will one day be widely used as a green way of producing the high temperatures needed in manufacturing. âWe really need to tackle the challenge of decarbonising these industries, and this could be one of the solutions,â he says.

PICK A CARD INTUITIVE READING: WHAT TYPE OF GODDESS ARE YOU?
Wanted to do something fun for Venus day, so whats better than figuring out the type of goddess vibe you carry ? Pick which vibe suits you the most, and you read each energy for yourself.

Pile 1 : 'An Angel With Wings, The Beauty Queen, The Ocean Ruler'
This gift you have is connected to Mother Nature. You have a divine feminine frequency that propels your aura towards a larger group of people. Your energy is humongous and people notice you from afar. Your gift is being able to be a star and growing beyond what others limits were for you. Your creative energy sparks when your more confident in yourself and your potential. Your energy attracts demons (spiritually as well as physical bodies) because your spark enlightens their rage, shadows, envy etc. But its because your healing aura shines so brightly that they NEED to let go of that dark energy. When you walk into the room, people's hearts are touched. The heart chakra is stronger with this group, it is connected to Mother Gaia in a way that makes people believe in something beautiful. Venus Daughter. You're a gift from the divine to others.
Pile 2 : 'Beauty Comes Slowly But Gracefully. A Thousand Times Better Than Before.'
This group is more of a late bloomer, but in the most beautifulest way possible. Your star power comes through as you gain insight and experience in your lifetime. Your beauty shines in a way that other people takes kind too. You eliminate the bad around others because you see the good in them and who they truly are at the core. This could be a blessing and/or a curse, but your ability to touch others with seeing their darkness and sharing love and compassion with them is what helps them see themselves and heal. Your energy shines through the hugs you give people and people love to tell you their secrets or things they usually wouldn't tell a stranger.
You have this childlike essence to you that keeps you young, so being a late bloomer is more about you being a child throughout life, you're not hear to learn everything so quickly. You're a child of the stars, here to start something brand new and making way for other future generations in the process.
Pile 3: 'Crazy Meets Eccentric. The Boss. The Goddess With The Brain. The Angel Who Cuts Her Wings To Be A Goddess Amongst All The Other Realms'.
This group contains a lot of knowledge that allures others to their magic. They are spontaneous and allow this side of them to create space for their raw imagination. People are enticed with what they know and whats going on in their brain. These individuals are good at telling you like it is, however a little less bluntless will get you the most favor.
Angel guides are stronger with this group, you have a larger purpose to fulfill and a lot of it has to do with teaching abilities you carry in this lifetime. Just like the last group, you have an aura that will change the view of how other people see the world but for this group you will challenge people in how they view the world through THEM. You mirror back to them what they hate to see in their selves and this group could deal with a lot of uncertainty when working with others since your ideas will be too vast for a few others. Your beliefs and ideas of the world at large is what will propel you to great success in the long run. Use it wisely, and not everyone is meant to know these conquests you've been on to obtain the knowledge you seek. Be better than the last. Good times ahead.
Pile 4: 'The Girl With The Big Butt. The Illuminary. The Luxurious Queen.'
This group is known for their body and the beauty of their psychique. These spontaneous leaders are gifted with the power to influence others in different vocations. You have a light that contains tremendous power and shouldn't be taken to lightly. Men will be in favor to you if you pay attention and use your discerning abilities carefully. You have a lot of spiritual protection coming from the ethers, as your boss mentality keeps people at a standstill with feeling powerless, envious and throwing out the evil eye whenever they can. You have a guilty free conscience and if shame is an issue for you than this is something you truly need to work on. Nothing good comes when you're feeling shame, you have to live your best life. Who cares about what others think of you, as long as you think highly of yourself than thats all that matters.
Hope this helps <3 Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

Thom Wolf, the co founder of Hugging Face wrote this the other day about how the current AI is just âa country of yes men on serversâ
History is filled with geniuses struggling during their studies. Edison was called "addled" by his teacher. Barbara McClintock got criticized for "weird thinking" before winning a Nobel Prize. Einstein failed his first attempt at the ETH Zurich entrance exam. And the list goes on.
The main mistake people usually make is thinking Newton or Einstein were just scaled-up good students, that a genius comes to life when you linearly extrapolate a top-10% student.
This perspective misses the most crucial aspect of science: the skill to ask the right questions and to challenge even what one has learned. A real science breakthrough is Copernicus proposing, against all the knowledge of his days -in ML terms we would say âdespite all his training datasetâ-, that the earth may orbit the sun rather than the other way around.
To create an Einstein in a data center, we don't just need a system that knows all the answers, but rather one that can ask questions nobody else has thought of or dared to ask. One that writes 'What if everyone is wrong about this?' when all textbooks, experts, and common knowledge suggest otherwise.
âIn my opinion this is one of the reasons LLMs, while they already have all of humanity's knowledge in memory, haven't generated any new knowledge by connecting previously unrelated facts. They're mostly doing "manifold filling" at the moment - filling in the interpolation gaps between what humans already know, somehow treating knowledge as an intangible fabric of reality.â

In The Time It Takes To Rise

People say I'm too soft sometimes, that I let things slide, wait too long, or give too many second chances. But I don't see it that way.
I think my patience is one of the few things that's kept me steady in a world that's anything but. When the cafe gets busy and the orders stack up and tempers flare, I take a breath. I smile. I keep moving. There's a rhythm to waiting, like the way bread rises, or tea steeps just right. You canât rush good things. People need time too, as well as space. And someone who wonât give up on them the moment they mess up.
I guess thatâs where the kindness comes in.
I donât really go around calling myself kind, but I notice things. I notice when someone in sad or happy. When they stir there coffee for too long, lost in thought. When they say âIâm fineâ but wonât meet your eyes. Iâm not great with big, loud gestures- but Iâll remember your order even if you havenât been in for a few days. Iâll slip an extra cookie into your bag if it looks like you had a rough day.
thatâs what I like about myself. That I try to make room for people, even when theyâre hard to understand. That I wait. That I care, quietly.

A Picking Robot for the Greenhouse - Technology Org
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/a-picking-robot-for-the-greenhouse-technology-org/
A Picking Robot for the Greenhouse - Technology Org
Working in a greenhouse is both strenuous and time-consuming. The ETH spin-off Floating Robotics picking robot takes on particularly repetitive tasks, alleviating the strain on human pickers. It is currently undergoing testing at Beerstecher AG in Hinwil.
[embedded content]
The work in the greenhouse at Beerstecher AG in Hinwil is demanding. With humidity levels of 80 percent and temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius, those working in it very soon find themselves exhausted. The family business in Hinwil consequently faces a challenge when finding and retaining suitable labour for its vegetable harvests.
The picking robot from ETH spin-âoff Floating Robotics addresses these challenges. It automates crucial tasks such as defoliating, harvesting and boxing vegetables.

âThe robot primarily takes over strenuous and repetitive activities, allowing our employees to focus on more demanding tasks that require a creative and critical mindset,â explains Bianca Curcio, who is responsible for production management in the Beerstecher greenhouse and is an ETH Zurich alumna.
Although the robot is still in the pilot phase, Curcio anticipates it will play a permanent role in Beerstecher AGâs production process.
The robot was developed by engineers and students from the Robotic Systems Lab (RSL) at ETH Zurich. Under the leadership of Salman Faraji, they established the spin-âoff Floating Robotics in 2023 with the aim of bringing the technology behind the picking robot to the market.
Equipped with an integrated camera, the robot monitors the crops, and with the assistance of its built-âin computer can recognise different plants and objects. Its robotic arm is activated to perform specific tasks, such as de-âleafing or harvesting.

FULLY THE NOTBOOK CODED IDC, but ethan and reader hving their first kiss in the rain? like they could just be out doing something when it starts HEAVY downpouring, so eth takes her back to her and chad's dorm since its closest between the two of theirs. and reader kinda lets the childish inner thoughts win and prob splashes him with water and ethan does not take that kindly (sarcasm) && they have a bit of a playfight until they lose balance and end up on the grass nearby with her on top of him. and through the midst of the giggles and flustered smiles between the both of them (mutual pining yall) eth without thinking kisses her. cries
ethan grumbled as he pulled his hood tighter over his head. "we should get inside soon, we're gonna be soaked."
you huffed as you looked over at him. your hair was dripping wet, with some strands sticking to your skin, but you seemed unbothered, almost as if you enjoyed getting drenched in the rain.
"you're no fun! i'm not going inside anytime soon, this is great!" you beamed as you hopped into a puddle in front of you, accidentally splashing ethan.
"wha- hey!" he said, scowling at you, even though you could see a hint of a smile underneath. "i'm gonna get you back for that!"
you laughed and ran ahead of him, hopping in puddles as you went. "that was an accident, but if you wanna challenge me, then game on!"
ethan chased after you, his much longer legs helping him catch up with you relatively quickly. he tried to grab your shoulder, but with his gaze focused on you he failed to notice the massive puddle in front of him. he slipped and fell just as he reached you, falling forward and tackling you onto the grass in the quad.
you laughed as you turned over underneath him, your eyes gazing up at his.
"i'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that wasn't meant to happen."
ethan laughed and shook his head. "no, definitely not... i'm not upset it did, though," he said, his voice barely a whisper as he found himself getting lost in your eyes.
you opened your mouth to respond, but before you managed to get a single sound out, you felt ethan's lips on yours. you gasped softly at the feeling, your eyes widening in shock.
ethan suddenly seemed to realize what he was doing, and quickly pulled away. "shit, i'm sorry! i- i don't know why i did that."
you smiled and shook your head, your hands resting against the back of his neck as you pulled him back down. "just shut up and kiss me again."

Three Students Just Deciphered the First Passages of a 2,000-Year-Old Scroll Burned in Vesuviusâ Eruption
A Roman scroll, partially preserved when it was buried in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79, has been virtually unwrapped and decoded using artificial intelligence.
The feat was achieved by three contestants in the Vesuvius Challenge, a competition launched in March 2023 in which people around the world raced to read the ancient Herculaneum papyri.
Papyrologists working with the Vesuvius Challenge believe the scroll contains ânever-before-seen text from antiquity,â and the text in question is a piece of Epicurean philosophy on the subject of pleasure. The winning submission shows ancient Greek letters on a large patch of scroll, and the author seems to be discussing the question: are things that are scarce more pleasurable as a result?
The author, whose identity is unconfirmed, doesnât think so: âAs too in the case of food, we do not right away believe things that are scarce to be absolutely more pleasant than those which are abundant,â one passage from the scroll reads.
The three members of the winning team had previously individually made significant contributions to the competition. Luke Farritor, a computer science student at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Youssef Nader, a machine learning Ph.D. student at Freie University in Berlin, had been two of the first contestants to detect a smaller number of letters, winning $40,000 and $10,000 respectively. Julian Schilliger, a robotics student at ETH ZĂŒrich, developed a tool that began to automatically segment the scrolls. They will share the $700,000 grand prize.
Nat Friedman, a tech investor and executive, and one of the challengeâs organizers, recently printed out the winning submission. âAll this has been in this dreamlike digital world in my imagination before," Friedman says. "Seeing it on paper, rolling it up, it just made it so tangible.â
Thereâs a lot more to discover. The scroll partially decoded by the winning submission was one of 800 discovered in a southern Italian villa that was first uncovered in 1750. The combined efforts of the competitors and organizers so far have resulted in around 5% of one scroll being read.

The final scramble to read the scrolls
Since the Vesuvius Challenge launched nearly a year ago, participants had both cooperated and competed, sharing their latest techniques with each other and posting pictures of their progress. But as the race for the grand prize intensified, the Discord, a social media platform where the participants shared information, went dark, says Friedman.
Of the eighteen submissions for the grand prize, most of them were received on the last day of the contest, Dec. 31, and three were sent in the final ten minutes, according to Friedman. Friedman recalls he was at home with his family around Christmas, decorating for the holiday while compulsively refreshing his phone, when the winning submission came in. âI ran into my little office at home and popped it open,â he says. âI was like, âWow, this is really magnificent.ââ
In accordance with the criteria set in March 2023, the winning submission contains four passages of 140 characters each, with at least 85% of the characters in each of those passages recoverable by professional papyrologists. It also contains a further 11 columns of text.
It isnât known who authored the ancient scroll, but experts have developed theories. âIs the author Epicurus' follower, the philosopher and poet Philodemus, the teacher of Vergil? It seems very likely,â writes Richard Janko, professor of classical studies at the University of Michigan. âIs he writing about the effect of music on the hearer, and comparing it to other pleasures like those of food and drink? Quite probably.â Robert Fowler, a professor of Greek at the University of Bristol, also believes the author to be Philodemus. âLike other Epicureans, he valued pleasure above all - but pleasure rightly understood, not mere indulgence,â Fowler writes of the philosopher.
In the final section of the scroll, the author appears to criticize his intellectual adversaries, who âhave nothing to say about pleasure, either in general or in particular, when it is a question of definition.â
âI can't help but read it as a 2000 year old blog post, arguing with another poster,â says Friedman. âIt's ancient Substack, and people are beefing with each other, and I think that's just amazing.â

What comes next
The Vesuvius Challenge has issued a new grand prize for 2024 that will allow the AI-enhanced decoding to move at a faster pace.
The competitors largely have been developing algorithms for automatic letter detectionâusing AI to see traces of ink on segments of virtually unrolled scrolls. Aside from letter detection, the other main challenge associated with reading the scrolls is segmentationâseparating the layers and virtually unrolling the scrolls. So far, this process has been highly manual; the Vesuvius Challenge employed three full-time segmenters. In order to ensure that theyâd have segmented enough of the scroll for someone to win the grand prize, Friedman bought the team new monitors and computers to boost their productivity. The challenge for 2024 is to automate the segmentation process.
Friedman admits that he has had other tempting offers of new quests to pursue. Over the last year, he says his inbox has been filled with Robinson Crusoe-esque proposals, from people alerting him to lost shipwrecks and ancient cities, undecoded languages, and strange glyphs on the sides of mountains.
But he canât walk away. He wants to help read all of the 800 scrolls already discovered in the villa. And some archeologists believe there is a main library containing tens of thousands of scrolls, still waiting to be excavated.
To expedite the excavation, Friedman has obtained the mobile number of the Italian civil servant responsible for the villa, whom he has texted, twice. âMy hope is that I won't have to go and dig it out myself,â says Friedman. âBut if that's what it comes to, I will.â
By WILL HENSHALL.

GRANDAUNT NGENG WILL NOT MARRY
Ngeng ap Ten was no grandaunt thenâher breasts stood high, her arms were masts, her hair flowed like the night breeze freely.
And like all young chieftesses she was quick to folly. She would not flee from a fight. She looked at the Zum King, saw his soft belly, his pale lips. She judged that she could not lose. She would have been right.
She kissed her spear and said: âI accept your challenge, o king. Should I win you will never seek me again, and live in peace always.â
He pointed his sword and said: âI accept your terms, o queen. Should I win you will give me your hand, and rule with me in splendor now and ever.â
Ngeng ap Ten laughed aloud and answered: âNever!â
She was no grandaunt thenâher eyes glared fire, her fists were mallets, and her hair swirled like a storm approaching.
Spear haft sang, spear point shrieked. But though the Zum King was slow, unskilled, she found she could not fight him. Her thrusts were forced away. Her slashes she threw aside. She found she would not spill his blood.
She dropped her spear and said: âCalumny! Treachery. My own right hand betrays me!â
He sheathed his sword and said: âI am a son of the gods of heaven. No mortal arm may hurt a star.â
The Zum King offered her his open palm and said: âCome!â
Ngeng ap Ten was no grandaunt thenâher heart beat steady, her brow an unbowed arch, her hair hung still like a veil never to be parted.
With her left hand she seized his sword. With his sword she severed her right arm at the elbow. This she offered to him, in accordance to his terms. He asked for her hand, if he won. It was her hand that she gave him.
Thus the Zum King, who thought to trick Ngeng ap Ten, was tricked in turn, and went home to his city with a wife he could not marry.
So it has been to this day: that the kings of Zum rule palace and markets with an arm now bone as their scepter. Thus Ngeng ap Ten, who thought to best her enemies with might, learned guile instead, and paid a limb for wisdom.
So it has been to this day: that she is our Grandaunt Ngeng, living ever free and alone in the heart of the wood.

This is a self-congratulatory post.
The above fable is part of an adventure I have just I have finished writing, for the Cairn 2E Boxed Set. The adventure itself is titled: A Tide Returning.

It is now in layout, and will receive proper art and cartography by proper artists. (These sketches are my own personal studies.)
Of late I have been doing poorly, mental- and emotional-health-wise---so it is a wonder I finished anything at all. I am glad I finished A Tide Returning. I am pretty proud of it.

A little shy, because it retreads the same general themes as a lot of my past work---the mangrove setting; colonial-capitalist violence done to a people and landscape.
Am rationalising the above worry thusly:
I have now written a trilogy of TTRPG adventures, set at the beginning (Lorn Song Of The Bachelor), middle (A Tide Returning), and end (Spy In The House Of Eth) of a settler-colonial project. Taken together, they make the point that:
Colonial projects are long-term, violent throughout, and an evil not simply halted by the defeat any single Big Bad.
But also that:
Resistance is as long, and as tenacious, and righteous action is its own victory.
Thank you Yochai for letting me write this thing.
PS: the header image is that of the Heritiera littoralis, or looking-glass mangrove---the kind of tree Grandaunt Ngeng appears as, in the adventure.

Original approaches to the assembly of NFT. They use different languages, and others will be used. Different font, not only the font of the document, but also Morse code, font for the blind, text encoding and others. There are mistakes that I didn't fix, now it's exclusive. The numbering, take a look for yourself, you'll understand for yourself. Ridiculing politicians and leaders of nations. They need to know the truth about themselves. Sex, humor, irony, sarcasm, philosophy, sacred meaning. Crypto slang. Truth. Shocking. Protest. The uniqueness of the content, many NFTs, is a challenge to the system of world order, it is suffering, struggle, revolution. The work will be carried out throughout 2025. There are only 300 NFTs, but the numbering assumes more of them, that is, at 300 NFTs everything will be over. The price, with the exception of a few dozen NFTs, is fixed and will not change â 0.08 eth. 2 in 1, but in several NFTs there are 3 tokens and 1 token, look for it.
