The Coruscant Guard’s armor had been the same as the deployed troops’ in the very beginning. Soon, certain politicians and some loud parts of the public got uncomfortable with war tanks “strolling along our streets and even the Senate”. The armor had to change. Quick. The war was already on every news outlet and ever present, the clones stationed on Coruscant did not need to remind the peaceful citizens of it.

So a more streamlined version was designed (design 12 was approved, finally) with a headset visor instead of a helmet.

This, too, was not right.

“I cannot be expected to concentrate on my duties when I see the same face everywhere!” Senators complained.

The designers gently hit their heads on their desks. And another helmet was designed.

“I am going to murder them all in cold blood,” Commander Fox was not quoted on the matter when the new design was revealed with barely any visor present. “How am I supposed to take a dump on the flimsiwork when I can’t see it.”

“If I may,” Senator Organa spoke up, and the designers for the Alderaanian guards’ armor was put in charge.

“Senator,” one of the designers said in a confidential meeting, “the specs contain restrictions and regulations that…” They looked at the holo helplessly, turning it this way and that. “Why does it need to be connected to their neural system in this manner?”

Bail is nonplussed unsurprisingly often in his life, especially when faced with the utter nonsense other Senators spew. “In what manner exactly?”

Now usually the suit provides the connector but somehow, with all the designs the previous designers went through, it was forgotten for the Coruscant Guard, hence the need for the helmet to click into the port in the clones’ neck.

Bail needed someone of equal trust to look into the Guard and their inner system to see how they could circumvent the neural connection’s dubious workings. All the while making sure the clones could still be in contact with other clones and no one being the wiser they wouldn’t be able to receive orders via the very hidden, very concerning channels built into the clones’ heads. A Jedi Shadow would be excellent, given their confidential nature.

Brothership Bros. Attacks - My Thoughts

It's nice that they made an effort to have these attacks actually play differently.

In previous games, if there was only 1 enemy, the Green Shell acted the same as the Red Shell. And if there were multiple enemies, after taking out the chosen enemy the Red Shell acted the same as the Green Shell.

Red Shell: Out of the two Shells, this is the clear winner. It's Mario's strongest attack until the mid-game, and even after that it still has a niche as a high damage, low BP single target attack. (That said I never had enough BP issues to be forced to resort to this.)

Green Shell: While it has a niche as the first multi-target attack you get, it drops off hard after the early game. Luigi's next Bros. Attack is also multi-target, but deals way more damage at only 2 more BP. Theoretically, it could have had a niche as a cheap way to take out hordes of weak enemies, but after the first strike, Mario's attack, and Battle Plugs it doesn't even have that going for it. At least it looks cool.

Hatch Me if You Can: While it's cool to see Yoshi helping out the brothers, and it's the first multi-target attack on Mario, it also suffers from the same issues as the Green Shell. Once I got Bomb Derby, I never felt a need to use this ever again.

Zapperator: And here's the point where you never need to use the Green Shell ever again. Like the Green Shell, it's a multi target attack on Luigi. But unlike the Green Shell and Hatch Me if You Can, it has a unique feature that keeps it relevant until quite late into the game: dealing equal damage to all enemies. You will need this for some of the challenge and even main story battles.

Bomb Derby: For the third Mario & Luigi game in a row, here's Bomb Derby. Having played both Dream Team and Paper Jam earlier in 2024, I can definitely say they made this Bros. Attack much easier to pull off. The time limit for tossing the bombs is much more lenient, unlike the previous 2 games where you had to start the input as soon as Luigi got hold of the bombs. The newly added finisher is also a nice touch.

Jump Helmet: Considering this is Luigi's only single target Bros. Attack in this game, he definitely got a good pick. What I found really cool was how they changed it from Bowser's Inside Story. Since the Switch doesn't have a dual screen, they just pulled the camera back. Makes me wonder how a Partners in Time remake would handle its Bros. Items.

Clockout Blow: The most popular Bros. Attack in this game by a long shot. And I can definitely see why. Pulling from all the best parts of anime, this move offers big damage and amazing visual spectacle. And the QTEs become easier once you realize there's set patterns as to how the bros show up.

Yoo Who Cannon: Unlike the Magic Window, which seriously suffered from being given a big finisher, Yoo Who Cannon was greatly enhanced. Not only does it look cool and deal massive damage, but it also gives what was previously a rather meh move a standout feature.

Max-Mix Vortex: Aka Luiginary Typhoon 2.0, it's cool how they turned one of this game's field abilities into a combat move. My strategy for pulling off an Excellent is to press the A & B buttons 4-5 times at the same time and then fill out the remaining gaps with precision. I also love how the tornado changes its color depending on how many fire and ice balls were used.

Conductor Connector: Aka: The Zee Egg if it didn't suck. While it has a learning curve with the outer space section, once you get that down you get high damage consistently. I wish you had gotten it a bit sooner though.

Final conclusion: While some Bros. Attacks were much, much better than others, I do have to applaud this game for not having a single Bros. Attack that I actively didn't enjoy using (for example, Paper Jam's Drill Shell). Even the weaker ones like Green Shell I still could whip out and not feel my pleasure suffering.

Writing Scientist Characters

this post is mainly an excuse to post a certain list of lab supplies I've made for a friend and infodump about lab work. but feel free to use this as a little resource when writing characters who are scientists and/or lab nerds. who knows, maybe it'll be of use.

General thoughts

Many people think it's a stereotype that scientist or nerd characters talk using complex technical jargon. While that is true to an extent, there actually is some kind of lab jargon. It varies across different labs and fields, but one thing they have in common is that it seeks to simplify, not the other way around.

They will probably not call a glass of water "silicon dioxide and h2o".

...and more. feel free to get creative. If you're writing in any other language than English, you can throw in one or two anglicisms as well. Also, most scientists will never gatekeep their work, and in an opposite fashion, will not shut up about it unless you make them. And no, most chemists do not know the entire periodic table by heart, only the most relevant elements. (main groups and a few commonly used metals of the subgroups) When it comes to characters doing the lab work, keep in mind that there are a lot more people involved than the scientist themself. Most scientists are more occupied with paperwork and data analysis, it is the laboratory technicians and assistants that do most of the practical work. They often have more lab experience than the scientists themselves.

Well, it's for a school research paper and we have to gather data on how social media affects stress and people's mental health.

First off, asking for help on finding sources is not stupid/dumbass, it's the opposite. Smart people ask for help when they don't know what they're doing.

Second, since you said school and not uni, I'm going to assume you're at high school level roughly and not uni/college. If so, then google scholar is going to be a fine starting point for you to find sources. It's generally user friendly and going to provide decently quality for what you need.

Unlike main google, it's been untouched by the AI nonsense and functions mostly like it did 5 years ago. It's also handy because it will often provide free copies of papers when it can find one. It should help you get some good research papers as sources that you can use as citations, and it'll let you save articles/handles citations for you.

Here's a quick guide for what you need to know to use google scholar!

When searching, put in keywords, NOT questions.

For reasons unclear to me, search engines and humans being weird has trained people to type in queries to search engines like questions. This is bad!!! It will get you worse results!! You want to instead remove any unnecessary words and focus in on giving the computer the most unique keywords to match you with what you actually want. For example:

BAD: how does social media affect stress and mental health?

BETTER: social media stress effect mental health

BEST: social media mental health

You really want to par down your keywords as much as possible, limiting connector or filler unless you absolutely need it. The more specific words you use (ie using "depression" rather than the more general "mental health") the more specific your results. Focus on practicing that and you'll do excellent.

With that out of the way, for actual google scholar use:

Right here, we have a very important feature, the free copy. If google can pull up a free public copy of a paper, it will! Always use those when possible.

Always check the date on the research you're pulling! For a topic like social media, I would be wary of pulling any source that's 5 years or older, since it's an evolving landscape! For other topics, the rules vary a lot depending on the topic and quality of research available.

Next up, saving & citation. The save button lets you save an article for later. You can stick it on a particular list. Handy for keeping track of sources. The cite button generates citations for you, in most of the common styles. Saves you having to mess with making them yourself.

Finally! Further research! When you click down here, you can see articles that have cited this paper and related articles. Both are quite handy for exploring a particular topic further as you look for research that builds on what you've found. Particularly when the area you're looking at is niche or highly specific. Also a great way to find systematic reviews of data that are sometimes a bit stubborn about showing up in research results.

During the pandemic I struggled to keep up with my academic studies, and so I got myself a self-help book about excelling in science: A mind for numbers by Barbara Oakley. I'm mentioning this because it ended up offering great insight on how to stay focused, motivated, and disciplined, regardless of what you're doing, and I use the advice to this day, even for my hobby writing. This is a mix of everything: tips from the book, other advice I've found online, and what helps me in particular.

Find a schedule. I personally find it easier to start an activity once it becomes part of my routine. It's something my brain anticipates and prepares for. Now, it doesn't have to be an exact timetable. But you can have a look at your current schedule, and come up with a rough interval. For example, you might have more time in the evening, or maybe you have a burst of energy in the morning. Pick a time when you're not too tired and try to stick to it most days.

Focus on the process, not achievement. So, you've established your routine. What did you set as an achievement? Concrete goals, such as finishing up a story, or writing a given number of words? While this isn't a bad idea, it can sometimes contribute to that stumped feeling you've mentioned. I once read an article from a professor who suggested the following: pick your time window, and focus on just doing something. In that hour you've dedicated to writing, you can write as planned, or you can sketch up the characters, create visuals, build an outline, draw a timeline, collect bullet points to elaborate later on, and so on. Maybe you're not particularly inspired at the moment; don't let it stress you out, just work around it instead.

Don't force yourself. Our brain uses two different processes for thinking - the focused and diffuse modes. In order to solve a problem or task, it's ideal to be in a focused mode. Your brain is actively building connections and coming up with solutions. A neat little detail, however, is that your brain doesn't stop working once you move on from a problem. It continues fiddling with it in the background: that's the diffuse mode. It's why you sometimes have a sudden eureka moment, despite not actively thinking of said topic. If you're struggling with your story and can't come up with anything, step away. Do activities that trigger your diffuse mode, like sleeping, listening to music, walking, cycling, drawing, taking a shower or bath, meditating. Let your mind fiddle with it freely, give it some time, and try again later.

Don't worry about how you write. You don't have to sit down and write entire paragraphs. I used to have an idea for a story, then I'd struggle to come with connectors for said idea. What happens before that? How do I begin? I'd end up wasting a lot of time writing the premise instead of the actual thought I originally had. Now I just write down whatever I feel like, while I have the inspiration, and fill the rest later. Even if it's just a sentence, or a concept, scribble whatever comes to mind and patch it up afterwards. It'll be easier to continue when you have a starting point to build around.

Small steps. Lastly, it's okay to take breaks, and it's perfectly fine to have days, weeks, or even months when you're simply just not in the mood. There are other ways in which you can build your story. You can draw the characters, build world maps, watch movies related to your topics, create fitting playlists, all that jazz. Be patient with yourself and don't forget why you're (presumably) writing in the first place - because it brings you joy. :)
