My mom, after spending an extended weekend with my dad's old college classmates and their families: It's so weird that all of these very weird, intelligent and structured men who got their masters in engineering in the late 1980s have sons that are all autistic and daughters who all have mood disorders.

me as a child, considering whether my parents are right about me being incapable and worthless: but would anyone in the world be saying those things with such confidence and conviction if they're not even true? Honestly, the biggest downfall in the writing of Hotd is that the writers seem barely aware of the actual politics behind the Dance other than the misogyny.

And even that they only touch on in the most surface level way completely divorced from the context of the actual feudal system it exists in.

like i cannot stress enough that porn addiction is a fake thing made up by fundamentalists to make you demonize sex. it is not a real thing. you can have all manner of compulsions, sure, but a porn compulsion is no more harmful than a compulsion to doomscrolling or washing your hands or brushing your teeth. which is to say, it's not great to have a compulsion at all, but a compulsion to pornography is not uniquely concerning in and off itself.

research on this subject is very clear that porn and porn consumption itself is not the issue. what causes distress and shame is the culture surrounding porn and the way our society demonizes people for normal sexual feelings.

porn is morally neutral. you are not a bad person for enjoying porn. the real-life porn industry is a shitshow, but there are many ways to enjoy pornography that are entirely harmless. support your favorite independent porn producers.

Thinking about step 9 and the whole concept of forgiveness of one’s self and others and it bringing healing and how bobby and Eddie have been paralleled a fair amount and the idea that Eddie started this process back at the end of s5 with his forgiveness and acceptance of his father but how he hasn’t yet gone anywhere near his mother and their relationship .

How his catholic guilt storyline seems more likely to play on his reltionship with his mother than his father (if his father wasn’t around that much it would’ve been Helena taking him to church etc each week) so the idea of an Eddie - Helena storyline that plays on catholic guilt and potentially his queerness in relation to that has me chewing on glass - it could be so epically good

i just watched 'socratic method' too, and huh! yeah! good shit! chase trying to warn 15-year-old luke away from spending his life taking care of his mom, admitting he "would have done the same thing," able to explain the hyper-organization of the house to foreman - this is what you do, you try to control everything, you organize and list and track and it's like you're making a difference. chase watching luke reunite with his now-sane mom, looking away and leaving because that wasn't him. (house being weirdly nice to luke. sympathetic. you did a good job given your situation. you've taken good care of her. )

rowan chase showing up, smiling sincerely and greeting his son "dr chase." actually seeming pleased to see him. probably even proud. he made something of himself. he's glad his son comes to see him off. he smiles when they hug. he doesn't tell him he's dying anyway. he still abandoned him. rowan telling chase it wasn't his job to take care of his mother, that it was too much for a kid (house telling luke he did the best he could). rowan abandoning him to do it anyway.

chase in s8, explaining to adams his mother died with him hating her, his mother used to lock him away for hours and hours. the implication that rowan was proud, did care and even love his son, but was a shitty and neglectful father anyway. the implication that chase's mother couldn't have thought he turned out alright, that he was "too much" for her and she'd lock him up, that maybe one of the reasons he hated her was that she hadn't been a loving parent even before she fell apart.

(that chase has a much younger sister, in diapers when he was 15. almost certainly still a minor, still a teenager, when he goes to the US. that he says she wasted "half her life" drinking, when she's probably only in her 20s.)

having pondered the matter, i've decided it makes better sense for viserra targaryen to be motivated by wanting to escape the fates of her mother and sisters through a marriage to the widowed baelon rather than dreams of queenship.

even though viserra was alysanne's tenth child, she wasn't the last. while she was too young to be cognizant of the physical toll birthing valerion & gaemon had on her mother, (with alysanne being bedridden half a year after the birth) she was old enough to be aware of the concerns made about alysanne's age during her pregnancy with gael.

alongside alysanne's reproductive abuse by jaehaerys is what happened to viserra's sisters. both alyssa and daella died in childbed quite recently. to viserra, delicate daella might have been more predictable than someone like alyssa who'd already successfully given birth twice before.

why on earth would that be appealing to viserra? to anyone?

that's why she tries to "seduce" baelon. (air quotes because she was FIFTEEN). it's not because she sees him as a path to queenship, it's because she knows baelon, knows that he's devoted to his two sons, and isn't interested in having more which is part of the reason he doesn't remarry after alyssa. with that, viserra is less likely to become a similar victim to her mother & sisters. would she be taking a gamble? sure, but viserra probably preferred to try her luck with someone she knew rather than some stranger who been widowed 3 times!!!

im not trying to refute her vanity or that she wouldn't have preferred being queen, but like- baelon wasn't even heir to the throne at the time? aemon was still around, he could father a son, and he had rhaenys. baelon wasn't guaranteed anything. as far as anyone knew the throne was not in his future. that's what makes alysanne's comments so nonsensical to me. waving aside the queenship thing, what else did they except with their family's glorification of incest? the targaryens being held up as closer to gods? no wonder the vain viserra who agreed with the squire who called her one thought baelon a worthier match for her than a manderly lord far away from court.
