halfway through 2024 book review

June isn't over yet but I'm looking at a couple of very busy weeks so it's unlikely I'll read a gazillion new books or something by end of month. So we do this now!

books I enjoyed so far

Aliette de Bodard's Dominion of the Fallen series, set in a post-apocalyptic Paris with fallen angels and magic and dragons in the Seine. I didn't quite love the three main novels, but I enjoyed how unique the world-building was. However, I REALLY loved the last two novellas about Asmodeus and his husband Thuan, who are a delicious pairing. The novellas are: Of Charms, Ghosts and Grievances and Of Dragons, Feasts and Murders.

Pacat's Dark Heir, which I enjoyed so much that I went back to reread Dark Rise and then again, Dark Heir. I liked the second novel a lot more than the first (and I actually ended up appreciating the first novel more on my reread). Needless to say, I am very, very impatient about the end of the series.

A Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel. KJC has done it again. The sequel to her Doomsday Books series is fantastic, with a vivid cast, an excellent main pairing, and superb pacing. Couldn't put it down. A great historical m/m romance.

The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold. I'd heard a lot about Miles and it was fun seeing him bullshit his way across the galaxy.

The Mountains of Mourning by Lois McMaster Bujold. A novella in the Vorkosigan saga. Very touching and emotional and a great character study of Miles. Really loved this.

Newcomer by Keigo Higashino. This dude is seriously amazing at crafting unusual murder mysteries. This one is structured as vignettes of shop-owners in a Tokyo neighbourhood and, as the stories progress, more light is shed on the mystery of a strangled woman.

Faithful Place and The Secret Place by Tana French. Fantastic prose, absorbing murder mysteries that are more like deep character studies as well as an incisive portrait of contemporary Ireland.

The Lady of the Lake by Andrzej Sapkowski. This is pretty grim at times, ngl, but it has a daring structure with lots of POVs, switching between numerous timelines, a frame device, lots of found materials (essays and chapters from fictional books). All that worked for me very well. I love some experimentation with craft. I wouldn't say it was my fave read, but I'm happy that I finally reached the end; completing a series always gives me a dopamine rush so yay

progress on my reading goals

A reminder that my two goals for the year are:

to read (some or all of) the Vorkosigan saga

to read less or no US authors

I'm doing pretty well on those two scores. Read a few installments of the Vorkosigan saga, and (besides Bujold and a poetry anthology by Maggie Smith) have read no other US-based authors. My intention was to diversify my reading and, indeed, so far, I've read French, Japanese, Polish, UK, Australian, Irish, and currently reading a Ukrainian author.

I've not read as many books as I normally do so far, esp in the last couple of months, but I read a lot more fic than recent years. I've read some fab stuff in a variety of fandoms. The fics I'm going to rec below are the longer ones that I read on my ereader:

Tarnished Gold by Prim_the_Amazing (bingqiu/svsss, M, 118k) Inventive premise. Couldn't put it down.

Memory (T, 23k) and Out of the Dead Land (M, 62k), both stucky, both orphaned by one of my top authors ever. The second one gave me the worst fic hangover I had in ages. I had to go and rewatch Captain America.

contrapasso by damagecontrol (jegulus, E, 41k) Very horny. I like that.

Fire Burn and Caldron Bubble by pastapug (jegulus, E, 40k) Lush language, fascinating setting.

Beholden by Faith Wood (faithwood) (drarry, E, 123k) Gave me all the drarry feels.

I will only pick 7 and it might not really be my top seven to be fair as I’ve read probably hundreds. I’ve only just a few days ago gotten an ao3 account so I can save them yeesh. So here are 7 Drarry fics I’ve read and immensely enjoyed!!

Turn by Saras_Girl // E rating, I cried, disgustingly, like when I rewatched Kiki’s Delivery Service as an adult post college burnout.

Eclipse by Mijan // T rating, written and set after Order of the Phoenix, huge Draco arc with lovely magic and mystery and a very, very long hiking trip.

And a bonus of anything written by bixgirl1 as I’ve read almost every one of their fics and I’m obsessed.

There are lots others like Running on Air of course and just gosh so, so many others I think it’s unfair not to list them. That’s the wonderful part of this fandom. It’s so rich and active it’s hard to taste it all. Oh yeah and most of the fics I’ve read are from over 3-4 years ago or older because I’ve been working through the search result on Ao3 in chronological order like a cracked walnut with a nasty case of completionism.

Chapters: 32/32 🖤🖤🖤🖤 Sinopse: Due to a spell Draco and Harry can read each other thoughts and things go crazy, emotional and cute at the same time. This one got me stay up all night.

The Ordeal of Being Known by louisfake

Chapters: 14/14 🖤🖤🖤🖤 Sinopse: Due to a curse Harry can't use your voice and Draco, a  Licensed Healer Legilimens, is going to help. It's like a time-travel fic but only through dialogue and revisiting memories, heavily emotional and overall well paced but for me the final chapters were a little bit rushed.

An unusually fic rewrite series. I love this 'new' Draco, he's just to silly that makes you laugh a lot plus it's amusing to see the Slytherin gang befriends with the golden trio. (It's sad that the author takes sooo loong for an update )

Chapters: one-shot 🖤🖤🖤 Sinopse: ""When Harry Potter unintentionally severs their soulbond before it can fully form, Draco Malfoy resigns himself to a slow death and decides not to burden Harry with a soulmate he's made it very clear he doesn't want. He's never been selfless before, but for Harry, he can try."" God that was painfully beautiful. Though it has a happy ending, the plot broke my heart in tiny little pieces, I'll never read this fic again.

Book: 5/7 (currently reading) 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 Sinopse: Through a magic mirror, Draco goes back to 1st year at Hogwarts as a child of 11 years old. This time he decides to make things right even if the process hurt. All time favorite time-travel fic. This was my first reading of time travel fic and rewrite series, tbh I never thought that someone would be capable of rewrite the whole story changing the perspective, it amazed me the creativity and love required to do this. All the characters are very dear to me, specially Draco I love him just too much; and the fact that Drarry is a slowwwwww burrrrnnn dynamic, makes this fic a work of art.

THE BIG FIND: DAY TWO

Welcome to the second day of our anniversary celebration!

The Big Find is a 10-day long Drarry fic-finding marathon to celebrate the blog’s first anniversary. Below is the Day 2 compilation of lost fics, both old and new, that we’ve been unable to find. Our aim is to get as much attention to these lost fics as possible, to help people finally find their missing fics! Anyone can participate by reblogging, reading through each list, providing additional fic details, and informing us the title, author, or link of a fic, and their respective number in the comment section. 2.1 It’s kinda old and short about FWB Drarry set during one morning in Harry’s bed. I believe Draco caught feelings and as he contemplated this Harry walked in the bedroom levitating breakfast for Draco. Draco asked what’s the occasion, and Harry said it’s the 1 year anniv since they first had sex. It was basically some tooth-rotting fluff about them officially getting together. (original post)

2.2 it has Draco, Hermione, Ron, and Harry but the main scene is basically just Draco and Harry in the Room of Requirement. Premise is that Harry had been using magic to glamour himself to cover up the signs or the Dursley’s abuse FOREVER so no one has actually seen what he looks like. Somehow I think Ron and Hermione convince Harry to let someone in so he decides to show Draco who he’s dating what he actually looks like and Draco is so shocked/aghast Harry thinks he’s disgusted and one of them (though i don’t remember who) runs away back to the dorm and Harry is deeply upset. I believe it’s relatively short (2-10k?) and i feel like it’s 2-3 chapters or parts but could be wrong. It’s probably AO3 but slight possibility it was FFN (HIGHLY unlikely tho). If it is AO3 then unfortunately it’s not tagged for any of the things i listed. (original post)

2.3 ao3, 8th year, dated before 2019 for sure. Draco was trying to repay his life debt to Harry by technically putting himself at his service and will, so Harry had control over him. I don’t recall if it was part of the life debt magic or a curse, but Draco didn’t have much free will and it freaked Harry out! (original post)

2.4 Harry was Snape’s apprentice and I have a feeling Snape was already dead and kinda existed as a portrait. Harry and Draco was working on some new lycanthropy potion (stronger than one Snape was making for Remus). I suppose Draco was a apprentice too. I have a feeling Remus was alive in this fic, but maybe it was for Bill. But it definitely was a quest to help someone in particular, or maybe in memoriam. also have a feeling that there was some interaction between Harry and little Teddy. I think I read it on ao3, but I’m not sure. There’s also a slight chance I actually read it in Russian, but then it probably was translated from English. (original post)

The fic I’m searching for had Narcissa Malfoy in it as a secondary character extensively, like, multiple instances of Harry and her having to sit and have tea and “politely” discuss her interest in pedigreed crup breeding. Another thing that stuck out at the time was how often the author described Draco as being/acting “warm” with zero actual actions that could be described as such (it was my only pet peeve about the fic, author did it so much I counted the number of times they did it; we were told Draco acted/spoke with “warmth” when he only ever acted like a cold-ass bitch well over 400 separate times over the course of the fic and its sequel).
