Derek is a dancer coming back from rehabbing a horrible injury (lower back?? fucked up his knee??) and has a chip on his shoulder because a) he totally has stage fright! b) has a reputation for being surly and overly intense. Pre-injury he was a rising star in the ballet company and had a lot more confidence but now he is a man humbled, quiet, relieved not to be in charge, but he also feels like he has a ton to prove! Especially since his mom and his older sister are famous dancers.

The ballet troupe is smallish and Stiles is in charge of logistics and MARKETING! Because he is a noted uncoordinated klutz. He's all about strategy and reviewing data and making things happen, and he is the absolutely bane of Derek's existence. He wants Derek in photoshoots, he sometimes coordinates with the artistic director (Lydia) on people's roles, Derek finds the way he talks about engaging customers manipulative, and tbh Stiles can be abrasive and annoying! So smart but so mean!

Derek has a recognizable everything face so once he has returned Stiles wants him to do an ad photoshoot so they can slap his picture on the side of a bus and this just makes Derek feels even more pressure. Resents Stiles for this and also because it's compromising Derek's anonymity. His only respite is teaching children's ballet classes, which is something he started doing while rehabbing his injury and also because the pay to be a ballet dancer isn't great at this small troupe!

But sometimes, when Derek is teaching these first graders, who do not care if he is weird and quiet, he notices Stiles watching. He thinks at first Stiles is going to want to use this for marketing but Stiles never says anything about it, just stays to watch Derek and the kids.

Then at some sort of holiday dance event Derek runs into his horrible ex, Kate Argent, who is a principal at a much larger and more prestigious company, and panics...only for Stiles to appear, wrap an arm around Derek like they're dating, and say "hey babe, who's this?"

AITA for not believing my friends new boyfriends "backstory"

I 20(F) am very close friends with a girl (20F) who we will call Alex. Alex recently got out of a really bad relationship with someone our age, and jumped very quickly into a new relationship with a man 14 years older than her, who we will call Ben. Alex and Ben are in the same community college class, and have known each other for 2 years as friends.

I have never actually met Ben. I am at a college several hours away and Alex is one of those people who like to keep friends she's made in different parts of her life separate from each other, like school friends all know each other but don't mix with collage friends, who don't mix with work friends etc. She says it's an autism thing but idk. She doesn't do this this romantic partners tho, she introduces them to all her friends and she's keen for me and Ben to meet now.

Recently, Alex has been telling me more about Ben, all the normal relationship stuff you'll tell your friends. He seems to be a lot better than her previous partner, but the bar is in hell, so it's not difficult to be a better partner (or person) than the previous guy. But idk a lot of the stories about his life she's told sound very far fetched? Like not impossible but more likely to happen in a soap opera than real life, you know?

The story that pushed me over the edge into complete scepticism was that apparently Ben had been online dating someone for several years who died unexpectedly, and their mother took over their computer after their death and pretended to be them for over a year until the mother died and lawyers involved in her will contacted Ben, and the mothers plot was revealed.

Now... that might not be impossible, but I'm smelling bullshit. When i have online dated before, we've spoken on voice chats, and on facetime, via Snapchats etc - did none of that happen for over a year? No new photos in over a year? Was this mother faking to all their mutual friends - some of which were IRL apparently- too or were they all in on it? Also, who is this mother who can perfectly copy her child's texting style, so much so that their long term partner didn't see a change? I know my mother and I text very differently, and the evil mother in this story was have been in her late 50s at the time, so I highly doubt that she and her mid-twenties child just so happened to text exactly the same way. Alex says Ben is rly into memes and meme culture too, and I really really doubt that a late 50s mother - grieving mother no less - is just going to instantly understand meme culture to the point where he wouldn't notice that his "partner" was behaving differently. Also, a lawyer is not going to an Internet boyfriend first when dealing with wills. They just arent. The whole thing sounds either fake, extremely exaggerated.

Alex did not take it well when I (gently) tried to point out the weird bits in this story. She got very defensive and claimed I was judging Ben just based on his age and looking for something to be upset about, and that I'm disrespecting his trauma by being sceptical. She said that because I've never met him I'm projecting bad vibes towards him based on my own assumptions. Idk maybe she's right and I'm being unkind AITA?

i mean can we all be honest with each other here for a second? so was the Jersey Mike's "Top Your Sub" tweet. if you have a decent level of internet savvy, you can probably do this for a not insignificant number of "viral" tweets. it's a form of environmental story telling in humor. i'm not going too deep into meme lore for twitter screenshots.

i've mentioned this before but my only hard and fast rule on my blog for twitter screenshots is that the username of the original tweet is always visible and if i can find one, i'll sometimes drop a link to the original tweet in the body of my blog posts.

but honestly this is tumblr and no one should even take it as seriously as i do. i usually only take it a step further because i have the time and patience to do so. no one is a bad person for posting/liking/reblogging faux tweets. just make sure you're crediting artists and comedians and attributing work properly.

either way, thank you for pointing it out. here's the top result on Google about this tweet right now. that Opera DX account may actually be in some trouble over this which is honestly hilarious and makes the fact that the tweet blew up beyond belief even funnier.

There is a common argument, made by Kurt Pahlen among others, that Mozart had a very different understanding of Cosi fan Tutte than his librettist Da Ponte, and it shows in the second act duet between Fiordiligi and Ferrando.

On the level of the libretto, it is easily a continuation of the ongoing game: Ferrando, afraid of "losing" the game to Guglielmo, decides to try a bit harder to woo Fiordiligi. So he comes at her with the usual declarations of love and threats of self-harm until she, probably inspired by her sister's newfound enthusiasm for free love, gives in and lets him have "whatever he wants".

But on the level of the music, that's not what happens at all. Fiordiligi's resistance may be fake, but Ferrando's love is real. He felt secure in himself as long as he thought he had the love of Dorabella; but he found out that he may never have had that at all. Fortunately, there is a woman who is offering exactly the kind of faithful all-consuming love that he wants: Fiordiligi. So for Ferrando, this is really a win-win scenario. If Fiordiligi stays faithful to Guglielmo, this proves that love is real. If she falls for Ferrando, he gets his dream girl. So his declarations of love and longing can be fully sincere.

As for Fiordiligi, she certainly also feels that this stranger is more in line with her values than her windbag fiancé. It makes enough sense if it's just vibes based, but it makes even more sense if she's seen through the masquerade. Many productions have Ferrando take off his disguise in this scene, just to underline the point that these are two people who have found each other.

There is a very clear break in the music after the line "dei, consiglio", where the game of fake advances and fake resistance turns into the most beautiful love duet you will hear in your life. And isn't that nice.

Of course, it is extremely perverse to have two characters falling in love because they're both so impressed with the other person's fidelity to someone else. But as the meme says, good art mocks the concept of values and confuses the mind. And this is very good art.

And of course, the two interpretations above aren't mutually exclusive. At the same time that Ferrando is finding the love of his life, he is also celebrating internally, because Guglielmo is not the more desirable man after all. And of course, thinking of the end of the opera, once the masquerade is over this connection can't possibly survive the deception that the whole game is founded in.

In other words, absolute depravity, absolute beauty, I love it.

i’m reading your lovely jenate fanfic rn and one of the details i’ve really been enjoying is the way you characterize the sibling relationship between jenny and dan! and it has me wondering, more generally, how do you picture dan and jenny’s relationship playing out as adults? we don’t really get to see jenny post going to london on the actual show, and i’m curious how things might have changed or evolved between them with them both being on more equal relational footing, so to speak. (i also think i remember you mentioning here that you yourself have siblings, so as an only child i can imagine you probably have a much more nuanced picture of this than i do lol)

ohhhh thank you so much!!! this is something that I actually explore in the next chapter (posting forthcoming), but I'll talk about it now just to get ahead of that lol

I am thinking, in show canon -- and in the canon i construct in this au in which the show ends after Despicable B ;) -- that Jenny sort of...gives herself a clean break from all things New York, including Dan. and Dan, with all his abandonment issues, takes that harder than she probably sees at the time, but completely removing herself is what she needs the most in that moment. and then, a couple years later, they gravitate closer, but virtually.

with their work being so time-consuming and not really on the typical layman's schedule (like, writer and fashion designer lol what free time) they don't really have time to full on talk on the phone or facetime, but they text regularly, often over an inside joke or a link or a meme they need the other to see (because their partner wouldn't find it as funny)

I think Jenny as a grown up would find it easier to talk to Dan first about things over their parents, and vice versa, because their is this sibling kind of thing were no other person quite understands you the same way, and has known you this long and loved you this long. but the love is different from the love you feel with your parents. i'm not sure if this is entirely accurate...but the love feels...more unconditional somehow, because a sibling has more choice in loving you, but less failures of doing so.

and yes! I do have an older brother, our age difference (3 years) is slightly larger than Dan & Jenny's, but my relationship and experience with him informs - consciously and unconsciously - a LOT of how I write Jenny & Dan. Disclaimer: our pasts are not nearly as traumatic as these fake people, and our parents are still together (over 30 years WOOT WOOT), so our life experiences don't exactly line up

but that being said, I look up to my brother so much. and I switched school mid highschool (like jenny but for less fraught reasons) so I went from being "Andrew's Little Sister" everywhere I went to being just Liz, just myself. and that's an adjustment, from always being the little sister to growing into your own person, and I wouldn't have gotten that opportunity without moving schools, and Jenny probably wouldn't have without moving to London.

and my brother and I have followed our own paths and live in different timezones (and regularly different countries, he splits his time between the US and Canada it's a whole thing), but I never don't feel like he isn't there for me. I know with him I always have a place to crash and someone to send me cute pet pictures when I'm sad and someone who is just as worried about my dad's health as I am (again, whole other thing, not gonna get into it bc privacy but yeah). and I am never entirely lonely as long as he is existing someplace in this world. shit I'm gettting emotional just talking about it but,

he's the guy that drove me to my piano lessons and teased me for my music taste and took me to my first punk show and said "that was so good!" after every performance even though he knows nothing about opera. and when I had a 3 month contract in florida and couldn't take my cat with me he fostered Steph and now Andrew is Steve's favorite person and when I was unemployed I crashed in his apt while he was organized for the 2020 Iowa caucus and he crashed on my couch to visit me after I got my job and moved and we smoke weed and recite monty python and joke and laugh together and I can be a version of myself with my big brother in a way that I can't be with anyone else.

so to bring it back to your meta question, lmao, I imagine and attempt to write Jenny's relationship with her big brother in the same way. it's never the same as when they lived in the same house, and that's hard. (because they stopped living in the same house when he was 18 and she 16 and you can never really go back to that), and they each have their own lives and careers and loves that keep them where they are, but they are still always just...their for each other. and, if given the choice, they are the first person to hear the other's good news.

Practically everything I watch or listen to xD Most of my friends aren't into anime and even the ones that are aren't big on Japanese artists so some of my fave artists like Spyair or Maximum the Hormone, no one irl has any idea exist. Me and my mom also love watching Hallmark-like slice of life/romance tv series like When Calls the Heart, Virgin River and The Good Witch that none of my friends like, sadly. Oh and my aunt recently recommended to us a Turkish soap opera called "Sen Çal Kapimi" (Love is in the air) that we are absolutely obsessed with atm and literally no one else knows about so this is my propaganda for everyone to go watch the Turkish soap opera, it's on HBO Max!!! It's enemies to lovers fake dating, come with me to my ex's wedding style, and they are both absolutely batshit insane people. Seriously, everyone watch it and then come talk to me about them cause I can't get over how crazy they both are, I'm on ep 7 and they haven't made ONE normal person decision yet. Plus the guy is super rich so there's rich people DRAMA, which is the best kind of petty useless drama.

17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?

Tbh, I feel as if a lot of my AUs are designed for me to appreciate? (Which is valid, since I write them to make me happy first and foremost.) I tend to write steampunk, vampire, historical, and academia AUs, or fics that combine some or all of those elements. The Lighthouse Fivan AU was definitely an example of an EXTREMELY niche AU that I wrote for, like, five people and a cat, but those five people are very fond of it, so yes.

23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?

Oh geez. Hmm. I mean, as noted above, I have my five (5) different AU versions that I write for various ships and fandoms, so I'm pretty established in what I like and what tends to tickle the muse's interest. I do want to write more space operas, though, for reasons. So Burn The Stars is another fic I would like to continue when the brain allows.

I am currently working on chapter 2 of my new Dreamling fic, of my misery make thy use, and it delights me to present Hob's reaction to the Whole-Ass Mess and Dream Self-Destruction that was the end of chapter 1:

Hob groans out loud and falls backward in the suspiciously clean sheets, throwing an arm over his face and wondering if it’s too late to just fake his death and hop aboard a prisoner transport to Australia. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. This is the second-worst mistake he has ever made (the first-worst, unfortunately, is obvious) and he entertains a brief and wildly optimistic notion that it was all just a dream. Humiliating as it is, it’s not the first time that he’s had a filthy nocturnal fantasy about the stranger, and at least it would allow him to pick himself up and walk out of here as if nothing – or well, nothing much – is wrong. But the memory in his body and the ache in his muscles is too real, there are bite marks on his neck and dried semen on the sheets, and he feels both pleasurably and mortifyingly used. What the hell, what the fuck, what the goddamn Risen Jesus Christ on a speeding velocipede was that? The stranger insults him, storms out, comes back, and they fuck to within an inch of their eternal lives. Then he insults Hob again (possibly three times?), insists that it changes nothing, and announces that he shall now vanish for another century. Still didn’t think Hob has any reason to know his name or anything else about him. What. What. What. The. Fuck.

2. Anything that you’d like to write but feel like you’re unable to?

tbh i'm incapable of ever finishing that rvb fic LOL sorry to everyone but the protection and vague anonymity the corner of the HS fandom i have wedged myself into has given me, results in me never wanting to return to the chaos that ensued when i was an rvb writer. BUT for things I'd LIKE to write but cannot: i have a whole ass space opera au but it's SO involved i don't know if i'll ever get it off the ground :'(

8. How slow is a slow burn?

SEE NOW..... IT FEELS RUDE (not it's not) TO ASK ME, THE PERSON WHO HAS A VERY LONG FIC, TAGGED "slow burn (reconciliation)" HOW LONG A NORMAL SLOW BURN SHOULD BE...............

but when i am reading romance and typical slow burn horseshit, i'm gonna need at LEAST 50k and the entire first half of this better be them barely exchanging glances or just talking or it's not slow ENOUGH

This varies based on fandom and type of fic i think! obviously top tier plot tropes for me: Redemption/Rehabilitation (i call it rabid raccoon rehab), Refusal to "kill" the villain due to the protagonist loving them or what the fuck ever, FOUND FAMILY, also reincarnation yes this is four i'm adding it. if we're doing more umm non gen for me: Slowburn (duh), friends to lovers, reincarnation a la finding each other across every timeline/every me loves every you etc

11. Three tropes that are fine but are overrated.

tbh i am the pickiest human alive when it comes to reading. anything LOL. ship specific, as well but. hmmhmhmhmhmhm. Maybe.... Soulmates (unless very specific and kind of fucked up), fake dating, role swap aus

I only saw clips on Twitter and its only from Night 1, but... yeah... WWE is not for me anymore. The same ol' predictable spots and the same lukewarm characters. And fans trying to turn everything into a meme.

Wrestling used to = wrestlers telling stories and trying to do something original so you won't change the channel, because there were other wrestling shows on. Now its wrestling companies guilting you to like wrestlers, not based on matches or stories but who they are in real life. Their "story", which for 99% of them is not that interesting.

Roman has a story. Cody has a story. Rock has a story. But they aren't telling a story. Its just dudes wrestling and saying they should win because they have a story. That is not good wrestling. And Seth Rollins has no story. He's just forced on WWE audiences because he's HHH's boytoy and Becky Lynch's beard.

Things were bad with Vince, but they still were about storylines. The storylines were terrible, but they were still story-driven. Now the stories are match-driven... same as AEW. Everyone is copying the indies from 10 years ago. Thats what HHH did with NXT: throwing action and new talent at you so you forget there's no original story or gimmicks.

Yes, HHH is way more tolerable than Vince and even Tony Khan. What a low bar to pass.

I wish a real wrestling show would come along. Lucha Underground was the last great wrestling show. The in-ring action was innovative and the characters were totally new to American and even Lucha audiences, but the show was based 100% in over-the-top soap opera DRAMA that was goofy and fun. Wrestling an adult or a kid could enjoy.

I don't think anyone could give a shit about modern WWE unless you explained 10 years worth of backstory that is still not that interesting unless you watch the show twice a week. And thats fair. The diehard fans get a lot out of modern wrestling. But I don't. Because there's more important stuff to do with my life. You need to make me believe its real or forget that its fake.
