Why did no one tell me that fairy tales count as their own fandoms on AO3?
I’d always avoided fanfic and fandom culture because seeing other people’s (entirely subjectively) Wrong Opinions on existing IP tend to make me irrationally angry (and that is something I’d like to work on Not Doing—why do I do that?) but!!! Straight-up fairy tale retellings? That aren’t AUs of copyrighted media?? Taking the tools of modern transformative fiction and applying them to traditional tale types and thus creating a hybrid between the very new and the very old???

So I read a fanfic the other day and now I'm terribly scared of what the showrunners will do in s2. Like, I don't know what reason they'll give us for Daeron to be away but in the fic he was sent away because he had brown eyes and Rhaenyra was like "guess who has bastard children now" eventhough Daeron wasn't a bastard because Alicole was strictly platonic. And like, I know this is irrational because even they can't fuck up so badly, right? But then again, I don't trust them
I think the showrunners have said "oh he was just off in Oldtown with his Hightower relatives" because what definitely happened is they forgot Daeron existed and then Twitter pointed it out and they needed to figure out what to do. I don't think they'll try anything with the Hightower-Targaryens and their parentage, just because that's a bit old and tired (and it seriously dilutes the story which is why I hate the theory that Helaena's kids are Aemond's I hate it so much). So I don't think they'll fuck up badly on that regard, because I've actually liked a lot of what the show's doing, as much as I complain about things I dislike, and the issues don't seem to be about Bad Writing.
I think the issue we've seen with some of the writing in HOTD is that there are a lot of people writing different episodes, so it can feel a bit disjointed. Game of Thrones had many, many flaws in its writing but for the most part, it was written almost exclusively by David and Dan, with one episode a season (for the first four season) being written by GRRM and one episode a season written by Bryan Cogman, so everything could be kept with two people who share a vision and have a clear understanding of what they want to do (no matter how bad what they wanted to do was). Meanwhile, one season along of House of the Dragon has more people listed as having written an episode than I saw listed as writers for the first four seasons of GOT, so what we have is an episode written by someone who loves Daemon, then an episode written by someone who hates Daemon but still is Team Black, then an episode written by someone who hates Daemon and loves Aegon, then an episode written by someone who's Team Green but loves Rhaenyra, and on and on it goes. If they're able to be concise, to storyboard and plan correctly enough so that everyone has an understanding of what needs to go into each episode, and keep things small scale in their writers' room while also having a singular vision, things might go better than we've seen.
And it does appear they're taking George more into consideration than D&D did, so we have that as a final failsafe against any asinine decisions.

the effort it takes to find something that will make me laugh like a single-minded brute who manages to accidentally court a god and get married? incomparable. i stumble upon these gems by pure accident. and they're free ✨

That viral post that's going around about how people who write "book quality" mlm fic are too "normal" to publish and have real jobs so only "weird" people publish their "shitty" fanfic is so completely out of touch with reality and I am giving a massive side eye to everyone reblogging it.
Not only is it completely, easily verifiably untrue (you cannot enter any professional writing space without tripping over a dozen grizzled scifi writers who got their start by filing off the serial numbers and publishing their Star Trek fanfic even going back decades ago??? it's a whole thing?? plus how can you look at the mlm category on Amazon right now and say with a straight face that people aren't publishing shitty Spirk and Stucky fanfic??? Oh, honey...) it's also the perfect example of this kind of sneering elitism that true artists would never sully themselves by seeking profit, they do it only for the purity of the thing that always somehow leads back to, "no one should be paid to make art, actually."
The only reason you're seeing more published fanfic right now has nothing to do with the idealistic purity of your hypothetical government employee written smut of the past vs the debased scribbles of those awful straights of today and everything to do with the fact that a) self-publishing has created a voracious readership that wants a ton of content so it's become a viable, flexible income stream for many, especially disabled people b) anyone can publish now with self-publishing tools so there are less gatekeepers and c) lockdown got a lot of people into fandom and therefore writing who never tried it before.
And if you really think there's no "shitty" published mlm and no "book-quality" m/f writing out there that started as fanfic, then you are clearly not a reader so why are you even talking about this?

fanfic writer habits i've had to unlearn when trying to traditionally publish original work
a list in no particular order in case you're curious
starting sentences with "And"
so. many. one sentence. paragraphs. like, yeah, this is fun for The Drama but also...not how books work
using italics for emphasis--gotta use your WORDS, zippy
head hopping. rereading old fanfics i wrote, i'm like, WHOSE POV IS THIS?? HOW WOULD JANE KNOW MAURA THINKS THIS?? jesus christ keep your pov tight, zipperoni. i had to really learn this when i was revising my first book and my agent pointed it out.
Oh. Oh. some of these are good but too many are oh [failure]
Using scene breaks to skip through transitions instead of actually transitioning. this one i'm working on right now and it's haaaaaaard.
scene choreography. if someone is holding something, do they ever put it down? are they STILL HOLDING IT NOW, FIVE YEARS LATER?
overwriting vs using a lighter touch. "that's normal. that's casual. that's fine." sometimes that's great for emphasis, but if it was always just "that's casual. that's fine." the point comes across the same way, and doesn't hit you over the head with it as much.
introducing new characters and making them memorable, vivid, and not sucking up too much space when the reader doesn't recognize them (it's lena! i love her!)
pacing! things have to happen at specific times, the book needs to end at a specific time, the conflict needs to be sown here and explode there. making that all feel organic and honest for the characters while also conforming to the genre expectations that have very little flexibility (especially for a new author trying to convince publishers I know how to write books)
ending things at the right time. at first i wrote too far beyond the climax (classic fanfic problem) and then now i seem to have swung too far in the other direction and am ending too soon after it. but the good news is that my editor asked for an epilogue. you know what that means?? A WHOLE SHORT CHAPTER OF FLUFF Y'ALL!!!
Does this need to be a curse word or can it be a different word? i mean often it fucking needs to but not always!
Just cut out the word just almost all of the time even if it feels like it's just the right word; it will hurt just a little but you should just do it.
use as much sex as the plot needs. incorporate it into the plot. don't change the tone of the piece. make it stay in character and also be hot and also serve the narrative.

Red vs. Blue fanfics written and released between October 13th, 2013 (The episode with the heart wrenching "Freckles, shake") and June 23rd, 2014 (the episode where Tucker, Caboose, Grif, and Simmons find the rest of the group alive and well with the Feds) are top tier angst for Tuckington fans. We were in the trenches, 7 months with no content between the two, the genuine fear that Wash (and the others) were being tortured and possibly killed, Tucker busting his ass and learning how to be a leader and feeling like he's floundering because he doesn't think he can be as good as Wash was. The fics being written during that time just hit every time. If you are looking for good Tuckington angst, go to Ao3 and set the published dates to between October 13th, 2013 and June 23rd, 2014 and you will find gold, I promise you that.

Calling all BL academics! You should check out Intersections: Gender and Sexuality in Asia and the Pacific Issue 49, June 2023. It's devoted to Thai BL and it's Thai scholars, publishing in English, and available free. So basically everything I ever wanted.
Thai Boys Love (BL)/Y(aoi) in Literary and Media Industries: Political and Transnational Practices - This is the introductory article. One interesting takeaway is that there's a market for western M/M romance in Thailand and I'm dying to know what sort of titles have gotten Thai releases.
Chinese Historical BL by Thai Writers: The Thai BL Polysystem in the Age of Media Convergence - I didn't read this one. It's about the phenomenon of Thai writers writing danmei set in ancient China.
Authorial Revisions of Boys Love/Y Novels: The Dialogue between Activism and the Literary Industry in Thailand - This one was super intersting. It was about how the backlash to certain problematic tropes affected both revisions to Y novels and their tv adaptations. It uses Jittirain as a case study and includes passages from 2gether that were rewritten.
Boys Love (Yaoi) Fandom and Political Activism in Thailand - This article has a lot about Not Me, both about the backlash to the novle due to it being originally a GOT7 fanfic (allegedly) and the political context for the series. It also discusses a few other series related to the youth movement and marriage equality.
Heterosexual Reading vs. Queering Thai Boys' Love Dramas among Chinese and Filipino Audiences -This really only covers up to 2019 and as we all know everything is changing fast. I'll be interested in future scholarship that covers the current period. Basically expands on some of Baudinette's work.
Provincialising Thai Boys Love: Queer Desire and the Aesthetics of Rural Cosmopolitanism -I just skimmed this since I'm not familiar with either series mentioned or the rural culture of Isan.

I'm new to their work. BUT "A Coffin Made of Glass" is so beautifully written. It's dead dove yet so utterly bewitching. It takes place in the space between famous Star Wars scenes and gives a more in-depth view of the character's actions and sentiments. 
@spacexseven, omg where do I even begin? Okay, so they just have such a natural way with words. Their stories flow SO smoothly it's honestly astonishing! They've written two Childe fics, "Broken Vows" and "Mandatory Obligations" that I'm wholly obsessed with. The dialogue they write also feels so natural and forthcoming, it's absolutely enticing!!

Can I take a moment to just appreciate how poetic and GORGEOUS all her stories are?? Like seriously!! "Almost god" is my favorite fanfic of ALL TIME!! And don't even get me started on "Cry for Me"!! 
This turned out long I don't think anyone was expecting an essay. To be honest I consume more fanfics than published books nowadays so I guess it's a given to have such a long list.

WOO YAY im glad i could inspire you to start writing!!!🙏and i get it, writing fanfic is defs self indulgent and for ourselves first and foremost, but obvs nobody wants to release their work into the void😩 as for how my own fic got popular, one of the main things is defs timing. i published the first chap basically within the first week of the game being out (it came out on the 10th and my chap was on the 18th) so it was there right at the peak/start of the fandom. but i also dont wanna attribute it all to timing BAHHA cuz i think im a pretty good writer and that helps....my fic also didnt get popular right away, but i was consistently posting every single week + eventually started adding art every single week, and was just really dedicated to not only writing but also drawing art for it (which is also obvs another huge factor/probs the biggest factor). ive had so many ppl tell me they started reading my fic bc they saw my art on pinterest or something LOL, and some ppl have even read it fandom-blind bc they were into the seb/clora dynamic??? which is another point actually. i always joke about how i love my cliches and good girl+bad boy dynamics, and that im unashamed about loving them LOL, but also...they're cliches for a reason!!! lots of us eat that shit up!!!😤so i think thats defs another factor, vs if my fic was a bit more niche and avant garde LOL the fandom is also (understandably) a lot slower than it was at the beginning of the year so itll be harder in general, but maybe you could commission art to go with your fanfic? ive seen a lot of other HL fanfic writers do it, and i think it defs helps to draw attention! GOOD LUCK and i hope you keep writing!!!🫡💖💖💖🙌

The fanfic post I just reblogged has got me thinking. I say this as someone whose understanding of fanfic and the surrounding culture is 0% participation and 100% observation, but it strikes me that there are strong parallels, if not a joint root cause, between small-scale fanfic culture, mid-scale books being marketed using fanfic-derived tropes and terms, and the large-scale trend in movies and tv towards remakes/reboots/spin-offs/sequels of existing IP. From my perspective these phenomena appear to feed into/off of each other, but again without having personal experience in any of these fields this is is largely informed speculation.
But! I’d love to hear from anyone who has more personal experience with any of these areas and their thoughts on the matter.

Okay! But if you write fan-fiction, you're already a writer! I'm guessing you mean an aspiring author? ♥
How would you help with distractions and writer's block? I try to dedicate myself to writing, but then I wander off to other stuff and my motivation wanes.
This is not uncommon and there can be a lot of different reasons for why it happens. Understanding the reason behind why it's happening is important for knowing how to fix it. I have a couple posts that will help with this:

How do you advise me outlining a huge original story plot with world-building in an organized way that isn't just scattered?
Outlining is really just any method that helps you get all the important pieces of the story out, in order, so that you can use it as a reference while writing. Some people use one big beginning to end summary. Some people like scene lists or timelines. Other people like scene cards or mind maps... Different things work for different people, so part of the work you need to do as a writer is figure out which method/methods work best for you.
I often find, though, that the struggle people have with outlining is less about what method to use and more about how to actually fill out the details, which brings me around to plot and story structure. All stories have structure. Fan-fiction is often short, character-driven fiction, which gives it a different structure from the average novel. That said, even if you're a prolific fan-fiction writer, you may still need to take some time to learn about plot and story structure. I'll link a few posts that will help, but once you understand story structure (all the specific plot points a story should go through), it becomes much easier to know how to outline it.

What advice would you give for writing fictional religions and mythology?
First and foremost, it's important to understand the role religion and mythology play in your story... how do they feed into your characters' beliefs? How do they influence your characters' actions and behavior? How do they guide the forces of power in your story's world? How do they impact the story's conflict/s and plot? Ultimately, you don't want to put a lot of time into creating and fleshing out a religion or mythology that's ultimately unimportant to the story. It helps to focus most on the aspects that truly matter.
Also, you might consider using real world mythology and religions as inspiration... just be careful about cultural appropriation. It's best not to use anything that belongs to an active culture or religion unless it's yours, or unless you do intense research and consult with sensitivity readers to make sure you don't do anything harmful.
And lastly, what sources do you recommend to accurately describe buildings (especially castles and manors) battlefields, geographical locations especially when it comes to mountains and rivers, etc), dresses and clothing especially if it isn't modern, and fighting techniques that are believable (for example, how a smaller woman would fight a larger man without being unrealistic)?
1 - Find Inspiration Sources - No matter when and where your story is set, it's important to find inspiration sources for the places in your story, whether that's buildings, towns, regions, whatever. Not only will this help you imagine and describe what you're envisioning, it will help you immensely with research on specific details.
2 - Time and Place Are Important - Many descriptive details are specific to time and place, so make sure you know that about your inspiration sources and/or the elements in your story. You can do a Google search for layout, architecture, and design (along with relevant location and era information) to find the details you need. For example, "medieval European castle layout" or "Victorian era manor house architectural details." Likewise, you can look for "Tudor era menswear" or "Victorian era dress details."
3 - Fighting Techniques - This again will tie into the time and place when your story is set. However, some fighting techniques will be somewhat timeless. I would strongly suggest heading over to @howtofightwrite for the best information and resources about portraying fighting techniques in writing.

Time to drop my pet peeve. There's lots of obnoxious discussions about why fanfic is just "different" and is "perfectly valid" without "being something it's not", i.e. being compared to books, but when people actually articulate why it feels different (it sure isn't quality! because published shit sure does exist out there), they end up just describing the effect of... word count.
Ohhh published novels are more "stimulating" and "give you more to think about"? When the average published novel is at least ten times longer than the average fic? You don't say.... *eyeroll*
The main difference between people who read mainly published fiction and people who mainly read fanfic isn't necessarily the level of originality in the work, or the quality, but the latter group will generally read a LOT more short stories! I find that super interesting, and nobody ever seems to talk about that.

It is interesting because I usually dislike big publisher short stories, but I like shorter fanfic fine. Looking at the non-fanfic short works that I like, I think it probably has to do with how short content with a ton of outside context looks vs. short content that isn't leaning on something else. It's also because fandom is exponentially less likely to use that short length to end with a downer twist.

Writing Advice: Third Person Point of View - The Problem with Head-Hopping
A personal pet peeve in fanfic—and even some published books, unfortunately—is an author head-hopping.
I understand that not everyone learned about writing point of view in primary school, and many fanfic writers are new to writing and might not even realize they're writing head-hopping.
So, this post is an educational means for those who are interested in learning how to improve their writing.
I'm going to give a quick overview of point of view, a breakdown of third person point of view, and how to spot head-hopping in your writing.
What Is Point of View?
Point of view (POV) is the perspective (voice) from which a story is narrated.
There are three POVs.
First person
Second person
Third person
Third Person: Limited vs. Omniscient
In third person POV, the author is narrating the story through third-person pronouns (she, he, they).
Third person POV is subdivided into two categories: third person limited and third person omniscient.
Third Person Limited
In third person limited, the narrator is an external observer who knows the thoughts and feelings of ONE character at a time.
Here's an example from R.F. Kuang's, The Poppy War, page 341:
The Cike were stretched to their limit, especially Rin. Each moment not spent on an operation was spent on patrol. And when she was off duty, she trained with Altan.
Note that this paragraph—the entire book, actually—is from Rin's POV. We have access to Rin's feelings, thoughts, and observations throughout the book, while also seeing how other characters are acting.
But we are only in Rin's head. We do not have access to the thoughts and feelings of other characters. This is third person limited POV.
Third Person Omniscient
In third person omniscient, the narrator is an all-knowing observer who has access to the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of ALL characters in the story.
Here's an example from Jane Austen's, Pride and Prejudice, page 104:
As they drove to Mr. Gardiner’s door, Jane was at a drawing-room window watching their arrival; when they entered the passage she was there to welcome them, and Elizabeth, looking earnestly in her face, was pleased to see it healthful and lovely as ever.
Notice how we have access to both Jane and Elizabeth's 1) physical locations, and 2) thoughts. Even though Elizabeth is in a carriage and Jane is inside a house, the narrator is all-knowing and can narrate both of them at the same time.
The problem I see from many fanfic writers: they attempt to write in third person omniscient when they're actually writing shoddy third person limited, constantly switching between the POVs of multiple characters.
This is called head-hopping.
Head-Hopping vs. Omniscient
Head-hopping is when an author shifts between the POVs of multiple characters without a scene break. Meaning, the author is inside Character A's head but abruptly—and randomly—shares the thoughts, feelings, and/or observations of Character B.
Here's an example:
Kathy arrived at the cafe in hopes of showing Brittany her completed sweater. It was the first time she had knitted and she was eager to share her hard work with her best friend. Brittany took one look at the sweater and cringed. She hated it, but she didn't want to hurt Kathy's feelings. She didn't know what to say.
In this example, we are inside both Kathy and Brittany's heads. Both characters have distinctive voices, and because of this, the narration of the story is inconsistent.
It's jarring to read, and pulls you out of the story.
Here's the same example written through omniscient POV:
Kathy arrived at the cafe with the intent to show Brittany her completed sweater. After hours of hard work, the opinion of her best friend was important. At Kathy's approach, Brittany observed the sweater in her friend's hand and wrinkled her nose. The sweater was hideous.
In this example, we are inside the head of the narrator. The narrator is telling the story through its voice, rather than the individual voices of Kathy and Brittany.
Remember: Omniscient means the reader is inside the NARRATOR's head, not the characters'.
The Scene Break to Denote POV Switch
Back to my definition of head-hopping: Head-hopping occurs when a writer suddenly switches POV without a scene break.
Like the first example of Kathy and Brittany—there is no scene break between their thoughts. If the author wanted to write from both Kathy and Brittany's perspective, the author would have to include a physical break to alert the reader to a switch in POV. See below:
Kathy arrived at the cafe in hopes of showing Brittany her completed sweater. It was the first time she had knitted and she was eager to share her hard work with her best friend. ~~~~~~~~~~ Brittany took one look at the sweater and cringed. She hated it, but she didn't want to hurt Kathy's feelings. She didn't know what to say.
The squiggly lines demonstrate a switch in POV, and the scene would then continue in Brittany's POV. [Please note that a single paragraph space (as seen in the first example of Kathy and Brittany) is not a scene break. It is a paragraph break, and therefore cannot be used to demonstrate a switch in POV.]
You can write multiple POVS throughout a story. These will all be in third person limited POVs.
For example, each chapter in Rick Riordan's Heroes of Olympus series is dedicated to ONE character. Throughout that chapter, the reader is inside the head—reading the thoughts, feelings, and observations—of that singular character.
Individual chapters can also have multiple POVs (again, these are third person limited POVs). These are denoted by a divider or additional paragraph space.
For example, Timothy Zahn's Thrawn switches between the POVs of multiple characters in each chapter. The switch between his characters' POV is shown by an additional paragraph space.
Why Should You Care about Head-Hopping?
If writing head-hopping makes you happy, then keep at it. It's fanfic, and most readers are so desperate for content they don't care.
But, if you're interested in improving your writing, here are a few reasons why head-hopping is problematic:
It's jarring to the reader, and takes them out of the story. Frequent head-hopping can confuse readers as they struggle to keep track of whose perspective they are currently experiencing. It disrupts the flow of the narrative and can make it challenging for readers to form a strong connection with any one character.
It makes it harder for readers to truly immerse themselves in your story. Consistent use of a single POV allows readers to immerse themselves in the story's world through the eyes of a specific character. Head-hopping disrupts this immersion by constantly pulling readers out of one character's perspective and into another's.
It hinders character development. When the narrative constantly shifts between characters, there may not be enough time or focus on any one character's growth and development.
It takes away the emotional impact of the scene. Head-hopping can prevent readers from fully empathizing with or understanding any particular character's emotions, motivations, and inner conflicts.
Even well-established authors struggle to write omniscient without head-hopping. It's a nuanced subject that can be confusing to understand and difficult to overcome.
Again, this post is simply to inform writers about third person point of view and the subtle differences between its subdivisions. It’s not an attack on fanfic writers.

i read a hella lot on ao3. so what i am going to try this year is: make a count of words of fics that i read, then translate that into pages to make my count.

Fanworks vs. Published Works
Okay, so, I was on Reddit and there was this discourse of fanfic v. published work, and how the lines are beginning to blur more and more, particularly among readers, and how dangerous this is for fandom spaces because fanfic is not designed for the same sort of engagement one has with a published work. They look similar and feel similar, but equating them can be devastating for fanfic writers, particularly if people start reviewing and critiquing fanworks the same way they do published works.
The comparison on that subreddit—which I had never encountered but might well have been around forever and new to no one but me because sometimes I do live in a cave—was that fanfic is like a potluck. And I love that because it's 100% accurate.
At a potluck, you make something for people to enjoy out of love. It’s really shitty to go to a potluck, then walk up to someone who made what you believe is a subpar casserole and start in like you’re a food critic. You’re missing the point of the potluck. And you’re kind of a dick.
In a restaurant, the rules are different, just like in the publishing industry. You select a restaurant, you pay for a meal, and if the meal isn’t to your liking, you can leave the restaurant a review on Google or Yelp or the platform of your choice (assuming you didn’t just throw a tantrum in the restaurant itself, but that’s another discussion). And sure, YMMV from other diners’ experiences, but even if everyone loves this restaurant and you don’t, it’s perfectly acceptable to leave a subpar review listing the reasons why it didn’t meet your standards. It’s fodder for future diners to consider at this point, less for the restaurant itself. The way book reviews are meant to be for readers, not the author. The author will see it, they might get annoyed, but unless they want their career to go up in smoke, they won’t respond. Just like restaurant owners who go nuclear on bad reviews, word spreads when someone can’t take criticism.
And no, it’s still not cool to critique someone’s potluck dish even if that person is a professional chef. They still elected to invest their time, talent, and creativity to bring that dish to the potluck and are getting nothing out of it but the satisfaction of their dish being enjoyed. The potluck should be a safe space for everyone—the chef knows to expect unsatisfied customers at work; when they’re at play, when they’re relaxed and enjoying something with a chosen community, it’s really shitty to start acting like a customer in the restaurant. You don’t have to love what they brought but keep it to yourself and go try something else.
As a published author, it bothers me a lot more when people invade my fanfic space to be critical than it does any of the 20+ works I have for sale on Amazon and other vendors, and this is why. Fanfic is more personal because it’s unpaid labor created out of love and a desire for community. It’s not a commodity, and treating it like that is how you murder joy and, for some creators, sometimes the drive to ever create again.
So don’t be a dick at the potluck, okay?
