‘Unusual’ and ‘Unique’ Treasures Found in Woman’s 1,300-Year-Old Grave in England
More than 1,300 years ago, a young woman was buried in England — along with various medieval treasures. Now, a year after discovering the ancient grave, experts have unearthed another “unique” artifact from the site.
Archaeologists discovered an “extremely delicate, large silver and gold cross backed with wood,” according to a Dec. 12 news release from the Museum of London Archaeology. The cross was described as an “unusual item,” and it was found in a grave dating between 630 and 670 A.D.
The cross was first identified with an X-ray image, experts said. Then, archaeologists conducted micro-excavations by removing “whole blocks of soil” from the site before examining them in a controlled lab.
Tumblr media
Lab excavations revealed the artifact, which is a central cross “decorated with a smaller gold cross,” according to officials. It has five garnets, one large and four smaller, and at the end of each arm is a small circular silver cross with garnet and gold at the center.
Experts said the cross resembles other crosses found in “high status female burials” from around the same time, indicating that the woman in the grave could have “held a very special position within the Christian community.”
“Seeing the central gold and garnet clasp cleaned up is breath-taking,” Simon Mortimer, an archaeology consultant, said in the museum’s news release. “The key is now to reassemble all of the evidence that was buried on that day with this lady – to understand the full significance of who she was, where she was from and how she came to be here and why. Those answers will rewrite our understanding of early Medieval Northamptonshire.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Archaeologists are now working to determine whether the coins on the necklace were original Roman coins or if they were imitations made as part of the necklace, they said.
The original excavation also revealed several teeth fragments, but officials said further investigations at the site have uncovered more bones, which will give more insight into the deceased.
Since last year, osteologists have discovered “the upper part of a femur, part of the pelvic bone, some vertebrae and part of a hand and wrist,” the museum said. The bones were preserved because they were covered by a “crushed copper dish placed within the grave.”
Early analysis of the skeletal remains indicate that the deceased was likely a young woman, but further tests will be conducted to determine more details, according to experts.
Harpole is in Northamptonshire, which is approximately 70 mile northwest of London.

Brand New Moves
by tawaen
T, 7k, Wangxian
Summary: In the most ambitious heist ever planned, Team Rocket attempts to steal two legendary Pokémon – one from the Burial Mounds Gym Leader, Wei Ying; and one from the Snow White Pavilion Gym Leader, Lan Zhan. These two former rivals are paired up to battle against one another for the first time since becoming Gym Leaders! Will they be able to defeat Team Rocket? Or will they loose their composure and their Pokémon? (Just joking, Wei Ying and Lan Zhan never even notice Team Rocket. They only have eyes for each other!) Kay's comments: It's been a hot minute since I last consumed any Pokémon content, but you don't have to be very knowledgeable to get the gist of this fic. Rivals fem Wangxian meet again after years apart to battle, now both as gym trainers and it goes differently than expected. Really loved the slow clearing of the past misunderstandings between them and of course the Wen-Wei found family vibes. And Wei Ying the MILF. Excerpt: “Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan breathes out raggedly. She comes up to the top landing, but doesn't get any closer. “Can you tell me what I did wrong?” Wei Ying tries to keep her voice even, “You didn't do anything wrong.” She doesn't succeed. Her voice breaks as she says that. “You forfeit the match. You are crying. Please, what can I do?” Lan Zhan keeps her voice soft. Before today, they have not spoken in almost four years. Wei Ying has never heard her be so gentle. She clearly will not leave until she knows Wei Ying is fine. So Wei Ying just needs to convince her of that, somehow. “You really didn't do anything wrong. I just wasn't expecting to see Froslass again. I swear, I just need a moment. Then I'll be fine.” Lan Zhan sucks in a breath, “I traded to get Froslass because the other person told me you were the original trainer.” “I'm glad she's with you. That's... I really am happy. I'm just surprised.” Wei Ying sternly tells herself that she is happy. This is what she originally wanted.

// mpreg , pregnancy
There’s something intensely hilarious and fitting about imagining a Wei Wuxian who, as Wei Wuxian does, finds a way to get himself pregnant, only to act like a Harvest Moon/Stardew Valley farmer and go about business as usual. Pregnant Wei Wuxian out in the fields tending to his crops as if nothing was different.

The grave of a völva, a female shaman and seer in Norse mythology, was discovered in Köpingsvik, on the Swedish island of Öland. This grave contained several intriguing artifacts that provide insight into the völva’s role and status in Viking society.
One of the most notable items found in the grave is an iron staff that measures 82 centimeters long. This staff is adorned with bronze details and features a unique model of a house on top. The term “völva” translates to “wand carrier” or “carrier of a magic staff” in Old Norse, indicating the significance of this artifact. The staff or wand was an important accessory in the practice of seid, a type of sorcery practiced in Norse society during the Late Scandinavian Iron Age.
In addition to the staff, the grave contained a jug from Central Asia and a bronze cauldron from Western Europe. These items suggest that the völva had connections to far-reaching places and was likely a part of the upper strata of society.
The völva was dressed in bear fur and was buried within a ship setting, or stone ship, which also contained sacrificed animals and humans. This type of burial is indicative of the völva’s high status and the reverence with which she was regarded.
These findings are on display in the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm. - Source: Pagan Trader ThePaganTrader.com

An Anatolian marble female idol of Lilliya type,
Chalcolithic period, c. 3000-2200 BC.
9 in (22.9 cm) high.
The Guennol Stargazer is from the Chalcolithic period, between 3000 and 2200 BC, and is considered to be one of the most impressive of its type known to exist.
‘Stargazer’ is the colloquial title derived from the slightly tilted-back angle at which the large head rests on the thin neck, thus creating the whimsical impression of the figure staring up at the heavens.
There are only about 15 nearly complete idols that survive, although fragmentary examples, particularly heads, abound. Most of the complete examples have been broken across the neck, as with the present figure, suggesting that the sculptures were ritually ‘killed’ at the time of burial.

'The Shepperton Woman' Reconstructed Burial, 3640BCE to 3100BCE, The Museum of London, (Currently Relocating), London.
The woman was in her 30s to 40s at death and the lower leg bones indicate she may have had a nutritional deficiency as a child or she suffered from some repeated work injury.
Lead in her teeth suggests she was not originally from the London area, possibly The Mendips or the Pennines and she spent her childhood in a different area. It is possible that as an incomer she was treated to a special burial as most would receive sky burials. Her teeth were worn but free from disease.

I am LIVING for the Elizabeth Comstock slander 🙏
Yeah she is my least favorite character lol she's just male gaze personified with her oversexualization and manic pixie dream girl personality--she feels entirely designed around pleasing the male ego, when she's like 20??? bruh.
Ken projects through her character so hard at times--like when she talks about the Vox and Lady Comstock. like she's just not a fun or entertaining character she's grating. Which is a shame because the character concept of "locked away and wants there to be more to her life--to experience life to its fullest" is one I like! But at her core she's Ken's favorite character and he makes her so insufferable as all of reality starts to hinge on her existence--making her the most important character in the multiverse. Listening to Ken talk about her in interviews is grating as he discounts every other character in the franchise to prop up his barbie doll.
And I say all that, but when fans who don't like Elizabeth get REALLY violent around her it still makes me uncomfortable. Some people wish so much death against her when I'm like. she. she's not a real person guys. she's an extension of Ken. and people ALWAYS respond to female characters they dislike with extreme violence when like. that's what happened in canon. Ken smashed her head in. I thought we all agreed that was bad. I just pretend she doesn't exist.

I Die, You Die, They Die
Tumblr media
“Suicide,” someone murmured after reading the announcement that a woman had died at the retirement center. “She was estranged from her family,” said another who stood beside the first speaker. Her remark rang true because the death notice asked that no condolences be left for the family. A shiver of melancholy ran through me as I read it. Being the last of my tribe, I realized that upon my death, no one would need consoling.  Headstones proliferate like autumn leaves in a graveyard but no matter how touching their inscription, the words are unreliable tributes to a life.  A generation passes and few remember. After eons come and go, archeologists may take an interest in a burial mound. And, if they find a necklace or smooth stone left beside someone they have disentombed, they are elated rather than grieved because the found object has been shorn of its memories.       Sometimes two bodies share the same grave, a discovery that raises a question.  Are these bones those of lovers? Or does a mother lie eternally with her stillborn child?  Their deathly embrace tells a story but who remembers? The desire to escape oblivion is potent. A hundred thousand years before homo sapiens walked the earth, the prehuman Homo Naledis buried their dead with mementos before carving the histories of these loved ones on cave walls.  Again, researchers rejoice because while the personal memory of these beings is erased, something about the hominin culture remains.  Patriarchy has a long presence in the affairs of humanoids, for example.  DNA studies of ancient sites suggest that females left their home community to join another– suggesting the probability that they followed their male companion to his home tribe.  Memory is a frail weapon with which to hold back the dark. Technology may come to serve us better.  In an earlier blog,  I wrote that one day we might download our stories into avatars but that would be a pale version of immortality. A combination of technology and biology is also possible, like current efforts to merge Artificial Intelligence (AI) with brain cells.  Will the result make machines smarter?  Or will humans become superhuman? Either way, will the merger help us conquer death?  We must wait to see. Some among us seek a less ambitious goal. With diet and medicinal cocktails, they hope to reverse the aging process.  Regimens like theirs are spartan, often eliminating meat and sugar.  To obtain a longer life, will humans forgo their hamburgers with cokes? Again, we must wait to see. Beyond tinkering with the human lifespan lies an existential question.  Having plundered our planet’s resources to the point of self-extinction, do we have enough time to save our species with discoveries and technological advances?  Or, is our destiny to grovel in the dust for a sip of water? To be or not to be IS  the overwhelming question.  The woman who committed suicide at my retirement center made her choice freely. Others have done the same because without love and respect what is life?  Germaine Greer, a woman near my years, ponders a related question: how to age with dignity?  Once a  professor,  feminist, and author of numerous books, The Female Eunuch most famous among them, and a person brilliant enough to disabuse William F. Buckley of his misconceptions about women’s liberation at 84 faces a growing infirmity. To maintain her independence, she moved into a retirement center.  The solution proved to be unworkable.  There, she suffered endless days of Bingo and bus outings to places that looked the same.  This she endured for ten months, being subjected all the while to abuse from  fellow residents who repeatedly told her to  “shut up.” The treatment must have come as a surprise to a person accustomed to being paid to speak. Fortunately, a brother took pity on Germaine and built a studio in his home where she could live in the bosom of her family but in solitude.  I say, “Happy is a woman with a compassionate brother.”  Happy is the individual who dies loved. Science and technology have the power to lengthen life spans but human attitudes toward aging are slow to change.  In the United States, prejudice against the elderly is the last reservoir of disdain that people feel free to express, as if growing old were a personal failure.  Teenagers may be forgiven for imagining themselves to be immortal, but tyrants who feel the same are fools.   Is it the light that falls from the swords of their armies that blind these dictators? Are they unable to see that like any pauper, they serve no higher purpose than to satisfy the appetites of worms? How greater their history might have been had they considered our common destiny and devoted themselves to acts of kindness.  In death do triumph and failure humbly meet.   (The Victory City by Salman Rushdie, Thorndike Press, 2023, pg. 531.)
