Recently my life has been all about EMS. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun, it’s pays my bills, and my new partner is awesome. But it’s killing me in the way of exhaustion. I went a whole month where I didn’t sleep through one night at work, and on that truck, that’s rare. I’ve been assulated by a patient in which my temporary partner thought he had some unspoken duty to deal with it when I already had. It’s been a challenging month. I can only hope this month will be better. But I have a bad track record of being up for 24 hours straight on this truck. To add to this, our admin says we cannot nap before 5 pm... in my opinion that’s the stupidest rule in the world.

The Firefighter: In the eyes of a female in the ranks (March: Women’s Month)

The whole ordeal of leaving the comforts of being assigned on a fire station not too close to your home is somewhat desolating. At least that was how I felt seven years ago. Seeing my name written beside an unfamiliar place is startling. So off I google the place and step my feet on the lands of my place of assignment on 2012. From then on, life was never the same.

Working a male dominated job puts a bit of boast to a female ego, admit it or not. Basically an invisible armor to wear during the tour of duty. And of course, having a great team behind you is also a huge part in shaping that sleeping female warrior inside of you.

 I don’t believe that women should be kept in silence on a job that females are outnumbered. It is not to celebrate feminism, but just being respected as equal to say the least. Working with thirteen men and being the only female in the roster for a long time taught me to strive to work more, rather than to tiptoe my way to my advantage as being such “the only girl”.

 Females, as the “Ilaw ng Tahanan” is a tough title. You’re expected to have the magic female touch on your work, while doing a job that requires the strength of a man and a heart of steel.

 We may be sensitive, we get emotional. We may break down during fire response, seeing the families of the victims running to save some of their belongings from the blazing fire. A crying mother carrying her children finding refuge from a hell-like nightmare. The sharp pain of the invisible dagger thrusting on your chest upon seeing the charred remains of a then sweet angel- a breath of a short prayer for the sweet soul.

 There’s nowhere to draw the line between where we separate firefighting as a job for female or a job for male. Because firefighting is nothing in between. It is a job for the brave, regardless of who wears the pants. It requires not only physical strength, but moreover a sound mind and a heart that feels.

 This might be too much to stomach at least being exposed to the details of our noble job. The chance to be of help to others in dire need, and actually extending that help not just because we were trained to do it, but because we have the heart and willingness to do it, setting aside how much we make from it.

 So fret not, for being assigned in a place far from your home. This is not to encourage us to grow distant to our families. Because believe me, it is the opposite. Nothing can ever replace the moment you get to be with your own family, but I tell you, each mandatory leave we take to be with them makes it all worth it.

  A word from a not-so-new female firefighter- We know that Women’s Month is not just about Gender and Development Seminars. It is our everyday of the year. It is our responsibility to get better each day. To contribute and perform the duty we all took oath of.

 For the new recruits, don’t get upset if you think this may be not your dream in the first place. This is just one of the many reasons you realize that you might be actually called for this. And that you just responded late to the calling.  So go on girl. Cut your hair short. It will grow back before you know it. You’re here for a reason, Lady. It was not an accident.

Along with One World Medics, we had as our Grand Marshal @oyebombera If you don't know about here she is a well know Firefighter from Mexico. We have all had those really incredibly crappy calls in emergency services. This past year, I’ve had quite a few. And it takes a village to make it through these calls. But what happens after the call? In my experience, everyone goes off and does their own things. Cope with it how you cope with it kind of deal. But I personally feel like I am alone. I would appreciate that extra help. And it’s so hard to reach out for it.

We all suffered a loss this year. My emergency services system lost a great man. I lost a peds patient, and sadly I have only had two successful cardiac arrests saves in my career. Knowing how many arrests I’ve been too, that number seems so low to me.

The point of this post is to encourage any first responder out there, if you need someone while you are struggling with the stresses of the job or just a specific call that still haunts you, reach out. Reach out to friends, family, loved ones, your crew, a counselor, me, just reach out to someone. No one should have to go through this alone. It’s time to start saving those who save us.
