How Does it Feel to Read Classic Sci-Fi?
Orson Scott Card: Two of the most interesting books you’ll ever read if you’re willing to look past a handful of things. And then you find the planet of Chinese people who worship having debilitating OCD. And the Mormonism. And the fact that the author is wildly homophobic and ought to read his own books.
Robert Heinlein (or at least the Wikipedia Summaries): I guess that’s a neat concept—oh, it’s a sex thing. Um. Gotcha.
Ray Bradbury: Man, I gotta read this thing for class huh. Well here’s hoping it’s good! *three hours later* oh. that’s why he’s famous. this will stick with me forever and I will never look at the phrase ‘soft rain’ the same again. christ. And then repeat 3x.
Isaac Asimov: Wow, this is such an interesting concept! I wonder how the exploration of it will influence the plot! Wait, hey, are you going to add any characters? Any of em? No like, with character traits other than ‘robot psychologist’ and ‘autistic’ and ‘woman’? None of em? No, ‘detective’ isn’t a character trait. Those are all just facts. Aaaand now I’m bored.
Ursula K. Le Guin: Hah, get a load of this guy! He’s never heard of nonbinary people before. Lol, what a riot; how dumb do you have to be to comprehend that these people aren’t men *or* women actually? Oh, wait, what’s happening. Oh shit, it was about society and love and learning to understand each other? And now I’m crying? And perhaps a better human being for it??
Andy Weir: Alright, this guy’s a really good writer. Funny, creative, knows so much engineering stuff…ooh, a new book! …I guess he can’t write women. Well, he wouldn’t be the first sci-fi writer…ooh another new book! And it’s more engineering problem solving and—wow. It’s not just women he can’t write. Please stop letting your characters talk to each other.
Lois Lowry: Oh, I remember this being fun when I was a kid! Wouldn’t it be fucked up to not see color? …upon reread, it would be fucked up to have your humanity stripped away, replaced with a tepid, beige ‘happiness’ for all time. Yeah.
Tamsyn Muir (let me have this ok): Haha, “lesbian necromancers in space” sounds fun. Lemme read this. Oh wow, yeah, this is right up my alley. OH GOD WHAT. NO. FUCK. OH SHIT WHAT IS EVEN HAPPENING AND WHY IS IT REFERENCING THE BOOK OF RUTH AND HOMESTUCK BACK TO BACK!!! AHHHHHHHHH!! Now give me more please.

oh fun fact:
you know serotonin syndrome? (if not, go read the linked wikipedia article.)
you know how you get it from either overdosing or using multiple meds that act on serotonin, which includes most antidepressants you'll find (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, tricyclics, lithium, St. John's wort), some ADHD meds (amphetamines), some migraine/headache meds (triptans, valproate), and at least one anxiety medication (buspirone), as well as stuff like cocaine and ecstasy?
i knew that much, because i take four meds that are somewhere on that list daily, and another one as needed. every time i started a new psych med i'd read up on serotonin syndrome and half-convince myself that i had it. but as far as i know, i never actually have. (though in hindsight, like, it's not like i've gotten my serotonin levels checked, and a chronic slightly high level of that might be contributing to my heart rate always being so fast.)
what i didn't know?
also on that list?
opioids.
like, say, the hydrocodone my doctor sent me home with after my revision surgery last week.
...thankfully it was definitely a very minor case of serotonin syndrome if it was even a case at all (minor enough i didn't get it checked out by the doctor or anything), but that sure could explain why i felt warm sweaty and restless, kept picking at my nails, and couldn't sleep or focus all day yesterday, after taking a hydrocodone in the middle of the night because i was aching some and "it couldn't hurt."
turns out it could hurt.
learn from my mistakes, kids.

Im soooooo hungry i neeed.... gaming trivia. tO live 😺
i mostly just have TF2 trivia, as its history has always been something ive always been fascinated with, so i hope these suffice:
The Pyro's Beta Head: While 8 of the 9 classes had their heads redone throughout development (to better show off Valve's new facial flex system), only the Pyro was left untouched, leaving them as the only class to still have their beta head.
Reference Posing Medics: In "Trailer 2", there are two Medics who are in their reference pose, during the first-person sequence of the Scout running through RED's base. While their role isn't clear, one likely theory is that they were meant to be camera positions for shots that were ultimately removed, in favour of the Scouts perspective, and Valve just forgot to remove or hide them. The second Medic even turns to look at the Scout as he runs by, maybe further proving their original purpose.
The Teaser Corkboard: While we don't have a clear idea as to what Valve had been planning with the "Teaser Corkboard", one likely theory is that it was created for the proposed update that would've included both Asteroid and Cactus Canyon, due to the few mentions of "Future", the blueprint of the rocket engine from Half Life 2 Episode 2, and Poopy Joe. Also worth noting, the two posters that were added with the corkboard share similar styles Asteroid and Cactus Canyon.
The Balls of Steel Taunt: Originally, The Love & War update was meant to include a lot more taunts than what ultimately shipped. One of the few to get scrapped is a taunt called "Balls of Steel", where the initiator would dare other players to kick them in the groin. While we don't have footage of this taunt, we do have voiceline files that reference the taunt's intention, as well as the name. The few files that remain were reused for other contexts, such as the Soldiers Conga taunt, where his "Ooh!" and "Ahh!" lines were originally his pain sounds for the taunt.

It's wild because I have exactly one episode of Vampire Diaries left and I've been saving it since *checks blog* a little over a week ago (versus the six episodes a night I was watching back in season 1) and I keep telling myself I have to watch the ending if only so I know what I'm working with in fic but also I do want to see the return of Elena (and Katherine) but also I don't want to see Stefan die (or Damon and Elena in a flashforward apparently? How will they have time for all this, honestly?) but I do want to see how they manage to break the curse with Bonnie still alive (but maybe it wouldn't be so bad to write my fic without knowing) but I don't know. I'm notorious for not watching the last few episodes of shows I love (White Collar, Psych, Once Upon a Time, although that last I ragequit over many minor grievances with multiple seasons left so it's not really the same thing) but I keep telling myself that if you don't watch the end of a thing then you just have less of the thing that you love but like I turned the TV on to watch it just now and I'm actually so nervous? I both do and don't want to watch it so intensely, so I had to open up tumblr and blog about it. I could save it another week but I want to watch it before the intensity of my obsession starts to fade but I know this is going to hurt me, emotionally and profoundly. Maybe I can stretch it out to two episodes by stopping in the middle or something idk. But aaaaaaaaa I don't know I'm not ready but I feel like I have to watch it. Help me I don't know. I need some of you internet people to come over and watch this with me or something lol I don't know. I'm so nervous I'm not prepared but I don't want to put this off forever either. And once it's done I could start rewatching. But like, aaaaaaaaa!!

All my knowledge of ghosts comes from you so I have a question if that's okay!! If all the ghosts come from the house then how is the cave person (robin? I think) part of the crew :0c
Hope your tummy feels better soon 💖
tysm, I am feeling a little better today I think <3
but yeah that's actually a great question! so the rules the ghosts follow as explained in the show are inconsistent and confusing, even for the ghosts themselves, as shown in "a lot to take in" when julian (90's politician) has just died and can sit on a chair but also walk through it and thomas (regency poet) says "yes, it doesn't make sense, does it?" so just know that even the show itself recognizes that the lore is nonsensical.
but yeah "you stays where you dies" "and how you dies- died!" "it's your classic haunted house" is basically the number one rule, so for the ghosts that came before the house was built, namely robin (the caveman), the plagues (plague pit), and mary (burned at the stake), are tethered to the land rather than the house. even for those that died after the house was built, pat (scout leader) died outside of the house on the grounds, for example.
there's a whole bit in uhh the exact episode escapes me, but there's a bit where mary and robin act as sort of lawyers trying to insist that alison owes them because technically she's living on their land, and the land came before the house, so it should belong to them. so even they are sort of unclear on the distinction between the land and the house.
the exact boundaries on their roaming aren't ironed out totally either, julian who died the most recently tried to leave the grounds through a main gate and kept getting sort of teleported back, and cap (the captain. you know him.) remarks that "we've all done it" and robin jovially counts how many time julian attempts this, implying that the other ghosts have all similarly tried to leave the grounds. but the exact point that stops them might be different for each ghost? I have no idea. robin goes into the woods a lot more frequently than anyone else, howling for the neighbor's dogs and such. so his like. haunting radius might be bigger than the others??
but then, you have to consider the fact that, in s5, when alison is considering selling a chunk of the estate, fanny (edwardian noble lady), is all in a tizzy about losing some of their precious grounds. captain talks about how he likes to walk around the part they're planning to sell, but kitty (burgundy dress, hair feather), says that they still would be able to. and cap says "the afterlife isn't bound by freehold agreements" so???? what the fuck is it bound by then bestie???
I even have a wip of a fanfic idea going that considers this, imagining that they are connected to the physical land like the soil rather than anything, so if alison digs up a chunk of dirt they can follow her sort of on a leash outside the bounds of the house. why not?
anyway. long story short. it's a really good question. and I don't have a satisfying answer. the simple version is that they're all sort of loosely bound to the button house grounds, even the handful that came before the physical house. but the details of that connection are a shoulder shrug at best. even within the fiction of the show, they don't really know. so. that's the best I can do for you.
