Skiing - a beginner’s guide
I first went skiing in Switzerland with my friends nearly 10 years ago and I loved it. The feeling of the wind on my face, the speed, the adrenaline- it was exhilarating.
I’ve compiled a basic list of ski events, a semi-scandalous article and some of the best destinations in the world as well as some budget friendly ones.
Socialite ski events:
Snowboxx:
Since it launched in 2013, winter festival Snowboxx has been growing in popularity - and it involves flying out to the Alps for a week-long ski party.  It takes place in Avoriaz ski resort, Morzine, France each March, and this year saw a superstar lineup of artists performing in the mountains, including ex-Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac, Becky Hill, Jax Jones, Sonny Fodera and Andy C.
The combination of partying to some of the world's best DJs, with the unusual day-activites of skiing and snowboarding, are making many turn away from the summer festival circuit in favour of the winter one.
Hahnenkamm, Kitzbühel , Austria:
The Hahenekamm ski race weekend in Kitzbühel is arguably the biggest alpine ski event in the world. The world’s best take on the iconic Streif downhill track, which is historically the toughest ski race track on the World Cup circuit. A lot of the speed skiers consider winning races here as a bigger honour than the Olympics. As a spectator, the atmosphere is electric with fans around the world admiring some breathtaking ski racing.
X Games, Aspen, USA:
The world’s best freestyle skiers and snowboarders compete annually in Aspen. The event is a prestigious honour to win amongst action sports athletes and has propelled careers. Spectating the event is excellent because you can see most of the action from the viewing areas. The halfpipe events in particular are excellent to watch for this reason.
European Snow Pride, Tignes, France:
Tignes is home to Europe’s biggest gay ski week, with the European Snow Pride. Each day has a theme with nights of brit-pop to superhero days. Many international DJs are invited to play each evening party in the resort’s local clubs and bars.
Slightly scandalous tales: Things I Never Knew About Skiing Until I Was a Private Instructor in Aspen
Really interesting read. I was thoroughly entertained.
Popular ski destinations:
1. Whistler Blackcomb, Canada
Whistler makes it onto pretty much every ‘World Top 10’ list when it comes to ski resorts
2. Niseko, Japan
Located on the northern island of Hokkaido, this Japanese skiing destination is a snow-covered paradise. With a huge 15 metres of average snowfall, it’s no wonder that Niseko is the country’s premier ski resort.
3. Zermatt, Switzerland
As the highest resort in the Alps, it’s got the views. The incredible peak of the Matterhorn can be seen from just about anywhere on the slopes! It also boasts the greatest vertical drop in Switzerland, and there’s all year round skiing at the Matterhorn Glacier.
4. Courchevel, France
The resort is a part of the world’s largest alpine ski area, offering more than 600 kilometres of terrain and interconnected ski runs across 10 summits. The snow here is well-groomed, and there’s a legendary black run that’s considered to be one of the trickiest in the world.
5. Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy
Known only to the most dedicated, well-travelled skiers prior to the 1956 Winter Olympics, Cortina is a hidden gem in Italy’s Dolomite Mountains.
6. Baqueira-Beret, Spain
It may be a surprising destination for skiing, but Baqueira-Beret in Spain is one of the best places in Europe where you’ll find value for money for a ski holiday. You’ll be able to find affordable accommodation as well as some of the finest tapas restaurants in the country.
7. Ylläs, Finland
The arctic landscapes of Lapland are perfect for skiing. If you dream of snow-dusted trees, the magic of the Northern Lights, or the glow of the midnight sun, Ylläs is a unique winter resort that you won’t want to miss. As Finland’s largest ski resort, it’s got everything you need.
Budget friendly destinations
1. Vogel, Slovenia
An ideal spot for couples or families, this Slovenian spot is a truly beautiful and peaceful ski area. Overlooking Lake Bohinj, Vogel is part of the Triglav national park.
2. Livigno, Italy
Duty-free zone Livigno offers excellent slopes for intermediate skiers. But advanced skiers and snowboarders will be kept busy too – especially if they’re keen to explore off piste.
3. Poiana-Brasov, Romania
Poiana Brasov is Romania’s biggest mountain resort and certainly one of the nicest. The fairytale slopes, flanked by pine trees, are the perfect place to take your skis. With more than 24km of ski runs, there’s plenty to explore.
4. South Korea -Muju Deogyusan Resort
Muju Deogyusan Resort in Jeolla province is only 3 hours away from Seoul. So, if you want to spend your holiday skiing and still enjoy the city of Seoul, this is the place to go.
5. Niseko Ski Resort
Located in Hokkaido, Japan, Niseko Ski Resort boasts a total of four different resorts but with linked ski area. A single pass would give you access to all four resorts. One of the resorts, Mt. Resort Grand Hirafu has been officially named as Japan’s number one snow resort due to the wide array of activities offered.
6. India - Gulmarg
Gulmarg is a rare gem in the Himalayans that will undoubtedly take your breath away with its picturesque beauty. However, skiing in Gulmarg, Kashmir is not for the weak-hearted as the terrains are not suitable for beginners - to add to that, the ski lifts carry you to the highest point in the Himalaya at 13, 780 feet!
7. China - Nanshan Ski Resort
80km away from Beijing, Nanshan Ski Resort is perfect for skiing and snowboarding as the snow are neither too hard nor too soft.

Do you know fics where Draco fights for Harry? Doesnt have to be entire fic I just notice usually around the climax of the fic its Harry that makes the grant gesture to get his man; i want Harry to be fought for 😭😭
Hi anon! I definitely have some recs for that one, hope you enjoy these 😊
Like Gold by @the-sinking-ship (E, 4k)
Draco runs away from home on the back of his boyfriend’s motorbike.
Be Still by @writcraft (E, 5k)
Harry’s back in England and Draco tries to fix things before he disappears again.
(The Piece) I was Missing All Along by lauren3210 (E, 30k)
Draco and Harry have been flatmates and best friends for years, and Draco thinks life is just perfect that way. But when something comes along and threatens to take all that away, Draco has to decide what it is he really wants, and just how hard he's going to work to get it.
Make Me a Headline (I Want to Be That Bold) by dicta_contrion (E, 31k)
Draco never expected to see Harry doing that again. Especially with someone else, in a grainy photograph that's landed on his desk one Monday morning.
All Roads by @korlaena (M, 36k)
Draco hates his job at the Prophet. He hates it even more when he’s assigned to write an article on Harry Potter, who left the country three years ago after their falling out. Draco doesn’t want to face the truth about himself, but he’s stuck between Harry and his duty, and he’s out of options.
In The Red by @bixgirl1 (E, 45k)
When Harry goes looking for a vampire at a Creature club, the second-to-last thing Harry expects is to find Malfoy working there. The last thing he expects is to fall in love with him.
Nights With You by @the-sinking-ship (E, 58k)
Draco is mortified when moments prior to departing for the most anticipated destination wedding of the year, he is cruelly dumped. But when he learns that Harry Potter has, at long last, split with his horrible boyfriend, Draco is certain his luck has changed. Never a man to squander an opportunity for revenge (and what would probably be a spectacular shag), Draco vows to make Potter his for the weekend.
Tea and No Sympathy by who_la_hoop (E, 70k)
It's Potter's fault, of course, that Draco finds himself trapped in the same twenty-four-hour period, repeating itself over and over again. It's been nearly a year since the unpleasant business at Hogwarts, and Draco's getting on with his life quite nicely, thank you, until Harry sodding Potter steps in and ruins it all, just like always.
Among Ancient Pines by @graymatters (M, 74k)
Every day, Draco Malfoy tries. With every fiber of his being he tries. But he doesn’t much think about what he’s trying for. In his final term of Healer training, Draco is unfortunate enough to find himself on a plane, the only means of traveling to a small, magical town in rural Alaska. Years of hard work have culminated in an opportunity to work with an experimental wandmaker to study the intersection of Healing and wand theory. When Draco arrives, he doesn't find the wandmaker, but does find his apprentice, who happens to have ridiculously messy hair, a lightning bolt scar, and a definitely-not-charming smile.
I Am Not Who I Became by mab_di (E, 93k)
Draco left England after the trials and has travelled the world meeting wizards and Muggles from different cultures and with vastly different relationships to magic, each other, and the natural world. Now he's a fisherman in Finland on commercial vessels. Harry has been struggling since the war and has become a recluse while trying to write his autobiography.
Dwelling on Dreams by @the-sinking-ship (E, 135k)
Draco thought he could avoid Potter for the duration of his brief return to England. He’d stick to his schedule and be back home in Paris, where he belonged, in a few short months. No trouble at all. He had plenty to occupy him, what with the opening of the London branch of his successful apothecary, his innovative research, drinks with Pansy, a backlog of unread potions periodicals.

Speaking of travel. My husband and I are thinking of taking a long weekend trip somewhere next month. I have an extra day off, and he’s just really burnt out at work. Does anyone recommend any places for a 4 day weekend type of trip? We considered Boston and Salem since Halloween is coming up, but last minute booking is making it a tad too expensive. We could literally leave the country for a few days for less money 😂 but suggestions are definitely welcome! 🦎///
BERMUDA! I jk... but not really. The one thing that I must say I have enjoyed throughout the last 2yrs shitshow is I now have added Finland, Bermuda, and Portugal to my travel bucket list. Cape Cod was always on there but I do follow some people purely to use their travel pics as inspiration for my own destinations.
I need to start doing that too! Maybe I’ll quit my job and try to become a travel influencer for free trips!
…a girl can dream, right?! 😂🦎

Rare Beauty of Raahe
Tumblr media
Do you ever long for a place of tranquility and beauty that you would very much want to escape to when everything gets too overwhelming around you? Or do you have a place of your dream where you can be alone with your thoughts?
There were so many tourist destinations nowadays that you can see in blog posts. There are those elegant restaurants and high buildings with the busy streets and people. There are also places where we go to for their natural beauty like these pristine white beaches or clear waterfalls.
Of course, we cannot rule out the places who are rich in culture and history which you cannot wait to discover and experience yourself. However, don't you ever want to go to a place that will not only give you a beauty but also a story?
Tumblr media
If you do, it seems like I have the best place for you. It is a rare place of beauty and peace that is just right for tired souls who want to recuperate and take a break from the chaos of this world.
This place is especially perfect for lovers of the history as it will transport you back to the 19th history with its old houses and museums. The place is not also rich with the story of the past but also with all the stories of people living in it.
Are you curious where can you find it? Then, let us now explore the rare beauty of Raahe.
Tumblr media
Raahe is a quaint and warm seaside town in Finland with its old, wooden, and historical attractions. You heard it right. It is a coastal community situated in the Gulf of Bothnia and is even known as the "Town of Sea Winds". A lovely and peaceful town with sea air and a rich history.
It seems the perfect gateway for our longing souls. But wait, it gets more exciting than that. To give you a brief background, the town was founded by Count Per Brahe the Younger, the Swedish statesman and Governor General of Finland, in 1649.
The plan for the said town was patterned after the ideals of the grid plan of the Renaissance. In fact, the oldest remaining picture of the Old Raahe dates from 1569 which shows the town being surrounded by customs fence with about two customs gates.
Tumblr media
In 1810 however, the lovely town encountered a huge fire where most of its houses and records were destroyed. From this, a new town plan was drafted for rebuilding the town which consists most of what Raahe is now. Despite this unfortunate events however, the town school and church were saved from the fire.
Now that you know its history, let us get more familiar with the small wooden town Raahe is known for its wooden town center and historical museums. It also has its own small-town events like the Raahe Music Week, the Brahe Classica, Pekka’s Day, and the Jazz on the Beach Festival.
Now, let us get to the most famous spot in Raahe, the Old town of Raahe which serves as one of the oldest towns in Finland. There, you can find the Pekkatori Square where the neo-classicist houses of Fontell, Montin, Frieman, Hedmansson and Kivi-Sovio, and Lang are situated.
Tumblr media
Beyond this, the Old town also has the oldest dwelling in Raahe namely the Sovelius House which was built in 1780. Can you think of anything more interesting and delightful than what this town has to offer?
Whether you want sea air, history, festivities, or just a beautiful and peaceful scenery, Raahe can give it all to you. If the abovementioned sites and features of the town still not convinced you. Then maybe this most essential feature of the will.
Raahe is known for its welcoming and cozy people coupled with its calming environment. This is the very place for you to just be yourself and shed all those pretenses and pressures from the outside world.
Here, you can create your own pace and time as you slowly immerse yourself in the rich history and beauty of the town. Indeed, Raahe is rare in its wonder and beauty. The perfect combination of its coast, old wooden houses, museums, and festivities will make you want to get back to it as soon as possible.

Last song you listened to: ummm would have been my Spotify Wrapped top 100. The exact song I remember is House By The Sea by Modii.
Favourite pizza topping: if it has cheese, mushrooms, olives and/or pineapple I'm there. Supreme, capricciosa - anything like that.
Dream holiday: I have already been on some of my bucket list destinations! West Canada in 2017 and Norway/Finland/Tallinn; Estonia in 2020. I reeeeally want to go back to Northern Europe and Scandinavia sometime soon. I felt at home there. I'd also love to go to New Zealand to visit WETA Workshop and Rotarua.
Earth, Air, Fire or Water: I like to think water, despite the realisation I am NOT GOOD on open water and am 100% convinced we'll drown. In reality, probably earth, which is boring. I want the flowy elements.
Children's cartoons you grew up with: Kimba the white lion, Tom and Jerry/ Looney Tunes, whatever was on Saturday mornings.

Canada Ranks Among the Top 10 Countries for Work-Life Balance
Tumblr media
A study released by Remote HR, a global Human Resources firm, has found that Canada ranks among the top ten countries globally for work-life (or, as the study calls it, life-work) balance.
Canada placed fifth overall while New Zealand, Ireland, Belgium, and Demark took the top four spots.
The data includes rankings for several factors that influence an employee’s work-life balance. These include statutory annual leave, sick pay percentage, hours worked per week, minimum wage, and an overall happiness index.

Canada achieved an overall score of 72.75 out of a possible 100. It scored high for its relatively short work week (an average of 32 hours for most Canadians), safety, and for being 2SLGBTQ+ friendly.
Germany, Finland, Australia, Norway, and Spain rounded out the top ten. Canada’s closest neighbor, the United States, ranked 55 out of 60 in the Remote rankings with a score of 31.82 due to no annual paid vacation or sick leave, non-universal healthcare, and more hours worked per week.
The data on average working hours in Canada reported by Remote is supported by the most recent Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) work-life balance rankings where Canada again placed fifth overall. OECD said that “just 3% of employees work very long hours in paid work, much less than the OECD average of 10%.”
OECD noted that full-time workers in Canada use 61% of their day (14.6 hours) for personal care. This includes eating and sleeping as well as leisure activities. This is just slightly less than the global average of 15 hours.
Canada is short on vacation time
The Remote report showed that Canada fell short in annual statutory leave and vacation time. The data said that people employed in Canada receive 17 days of annual statutory leave. However, this is not always easy to measure as employment standards in Canada are mandated by provincial governments. For example, in Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, workers in the private sector (meaning those not employed by the federal government or in a federally regulated industry) can spend the first five years in any job with just 10 days (two weeks) of vacation time per year. According to the Ontario Employment Standards Act, minimum vacation entitlement increases to three weeks (15 days) after five years.
Again, this timeline can vary by province. Employees in Saskatchewan are entitled to three weeks of paid vacation after one year of employment, going up to four weeks after ten years. Quebec’s annual vacation entitlement rises from two weeks to three weeks after three years of employment.
This does not account for Canada’s federal statutory holidays such as Christmas Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Good Friday, and Victoria Day. There are also other public holidays but, in many instances and depending on the province, employees are not automatically entitled to take those days off. It often depends on their employer.
Comparatively, in both New Zealand and Ireland, all employees are entitled to four weeks of paid annual vacation after 12 months of continuous employment.
Consistently high rankings
Canada typically ranks high in global lists. For example, in January this year it was voted the world’s safest country for travelers by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP) and a study by Givetastic in late 2023 found that Canada is the world’s top “dream work destination.” Canada also has the world’s seventh strongest passport according to the most recent rankings by residence and citizenship advisory firm Henley and Partners.
These rankings add to Canada's appeal as one of the most sought-after destinations for newcomers. In 2023, it welcomed over 470,000 new permanent residents, and the Immigration Levels Plan for 2024 targets admitting a further 485,000. While Canada’s immigration minister, Marc Miller, has recently indicated that immigration levels in the near future may look different, he also recognized the economic and social benefits of welcoming newcomers sustainably. Happy Tuesday, everybody!
So, I'd written down three things that I wanted to mention in today's post and then I'll get to all of the daily goings-on. So, Finland has its own professional hockey league, Liiga, which by many accounts is one of the best hockey leagues in the world. Currently, there are 49 Finns playing in the NHL. That is 5% of all NHL players. The NHL for many hockey players is the ultimate destination, the highest goal, but there are other leagues in Europe that are very competitive and very popular. Liiga is one of them. There are two teams in the top division of Liiga here in Tampere: Ilves and Tappara. So, apparently, everyone must choose a side. I am prepared to declare my side right now. I am a supporter of Tappara. Their colors are the same as the Detroit Tigers and their logo is a medieval battle axe, not a weirdly drawn lynx. Observe:

So, as you can see, the Tappara logo is superior. We were told a lot about these two teams when we were at the kids' classmates' house last Saturday. The son, Joaquim, is a big Tappara supporter and the dad, Mika, says it is a great idea to go see a game at Nokia Arena when they play each other. I am going to plan to do that.
Another thing I wanted to mention this week is that Eric collected a few apples from a bin outside of someone's house, a bin designated for passers-by to take fruit from, and when he got these few apples home, they smelled amazing! I have never smelled apples with such an amazing scent. The were lighter yellow-green than apples I typically see in the store. Not green like a Granny Smith. But the fragrance was something I wish I could include in this blog for you.
I wanted to tell you about about my visit to my unit, "Languages," in the faculty of Information Technology & Communication Science, on Monday. My colleague and host, Maija, helped me find out what my classroom would be for Wednesday, when my first class convenes. Now, she and I had to click around a lot on Sisu, their internal faculty/staff/student web area, and finally, we found where the class meets -- but what shocked me, and I never would've thought, was that over fifteen weeks, the class meets in a different room each week! So very glad she clued me in to this! We went and visited the classrooms for the first two weeks. The first is in our building (Pinni B) and the other is in the building next door, sort of the main campus building, or at least the one that says the university's name on the front. Now, there, we looked for the room (A161 or something) and we could not find it for the life of us, so we went to the information desk, and the guy said, "oh, that one is down the stairs and down a corridor to your right and actually says B6." What?? Anyway, I think I will be visiting the information desk a lot. I teach my first class tomorrow! Also, interestingly, the class is listed for 12-2 p.m. but Maija clarified that it actually starts at 12:15 and ends at 1:45. Good to know!
In other news, on Sunday, Cece and went on a lovely walk (while Eric and Rowan were mountain biking) on the shores of Pyhäjärvi and we studied all of the small boats and canoes chained up on the side of the lake. It was a pretty windy day but still so nice. We took a sharp right and headed up a very steep staircase, with very uneven stairs, and we found ourselves back in the town and near a miniature golf course! Walking back home, I saw my dream apartment building: mint green with adorably and each-very-unique little balconies. I will try to get a photo of it sometime.
Rowan had tap and both kids had skating on Sunday afternoon and late afternoon, and for skating, we were at a new rink this time! Tesoma. There are so many jäähallit! Eric found a running group, ParkRun, and he ran a very fast 5k for him! He was stoked and very glad to have found a running group. Now, he's working to find a swimming group! There are lots of organized "hobby groups" for adults and they even get funding from the government.
Today is Tuesday and Cece had her first night of gymnastics! I did not get to go because I had a meeting with my co-author and the acquisitions editor at SUNY Press -- who is contracting our book!!! Woohooo!!!! We expect to finish it in June--after which the Editorial Board can say "no thanks," based on the peer reviewers' remarks, but that rarely happens to books like ours, that have been contracted as a result of the recommendation of the series editors and the chapters we've already submitted. Better start (or rather, continue) writing ;)
