Your blorbo posting dragged me into watching The Apothecary Diaries, and it's amazing. Thank you!!! Maomao is amazing and I really like how the episode plots tie into and build on each other. I was expecting most every episode to be stand alone in the detective style and I really like the exploration of consequences, foreshadowing, and long-running plots that the connectedness allows.
(I may have just binged the first dozen or so episodes)
Isn't it fantastic? I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I started watching it, but I am now feral. I love that it's more than just a bunch of random Things happening, that it's all building into a wider story, and everything about, like you said, the exploration of consequences. Not as just a "one thing leads to another" kind of thing, but in a specific "what this means in a rigid society like this" kind of way. I love how acutely aware Maomao is of those potential consequences at every moment, how she knows exactly how quickly everything can be stripped away for saying or doing the wrong thing (by whose definition of wrong, which may be capricious or over-wrought), while other characters - even the more savvy ones - aren't as aware of the danger that being smart - being noticed - puts her in.
But she also can't not speak up? She doesn't have it in her to just keep her mouth shut when people's lives are at stake. It's one thing to go "not my problem" about things that she desperately does not want to be involved in, but when a baby could die? And she has the power to save them? The only question is how. Even though she knows that this puts her in danger. Her moral core is dangerous for her, her desire to just be an apothecary and help people is dangerous for her, it all puts her in a position of having to do a political dance that she has absolutely no training for, except what she can adapt from the pleasure district's lessons. Gyokuyou says in the first episode that ignorance is a sin, but she's unaware of the consequences of knowledge. Maomao, on the other hand, is constantly aware of them. It puts her placid face and care with reactions and words into context: she cannot know certain things, and if she knows them anyway, no she doesn't.
It's very complex and fascinating, how it deals with this rigid society and the "renegade" who defies it, so so so differently than everything else. Like, Maomao defying the social structure and rising so high as "merely a servant girl" is incredibly dangerous for her! It's not something she's doing because she's So Cool and Better Than Everyone Else, it's because she couldn't hide her intelligence and people in power have dragged her into their machinations where she is forced to tapdance on a high wire of social expectations and keeping the right people happy. It's funny on the surface how she's the queen of staying in her lane, and how we as the audience know that she's not in as much danger as she thinks she is, because those people in power are head over heels in love with her, but it's absolutely terrifying from her perspective. She has to always be doing the right thing, all the time, or she risks having to choose her preferred method of execution. We know that half the Rear Palace and Inner Court would throw hands on anyone who would hurt her, but what she's aware of is how precarious her circumstances are and what she is perhaps not entirely wrong about (remains to be seen) is how fragile those affections can be. After all, she's seen top courtesans lose all of their value in a flash, or have the chance of freedom dangled over their heads and ripped away by the fickle "love" of a man. She knows that relying on the affection of others to protect her is a dangerous gamble. Maomao is such a complex and fascinating and adorable and funny and clever and heartbreaking character, I love her your honor.
And all of this doesn't even start on how positive the show is about sex work! That's also a massive breath of fresh air that totally took me off-guard like holy shit a show that treats sex as a completely neutral act? Like it's a thing people do with their bodies, either for fun or procreation or work, and none of these carries any moral weight. It doesn't pretend that sex work is not without danger or always chosen by the people doing it - but it's explicitly held up as a mirror to the Rear Palace, where women are also often in similar danger and not always there by choice. I don't know of any other show that treats sex like something completely neutral that has no moral weight, either positive or negative, and sex work as just another form of work, where the workers are framed so positively.
I binged the whole first season on Netflix and then jumped to Crunchyroll for the second as soon as I discovered that it was there, then promptly got my best friend to start watching as well, and she is also rapidly becoming feral about it too. I'm glad I caught another one in my frothing at the mouth over it!

16. What’s an AU you would love to read (or have read and loved)?
Okay, so I recently read this Dune Firefly fusion that I absolutely loved, cannot sing its praises highly enough. I'm generally not a crossover person, but a thoughtfully blended fusion? Shoot it straight into my veins.
23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?
Fairy tale AU! I've been turning around a vague idea for a Lockwood & Co one, although now I think of it, the conceit might work really well for Dune, too.
28. Does anyone read your fics before you post them? If so, who?
I share snippets here on Tumblr on occasion (love you all), and sometimes I will share sections of WIPs with the writer friend group chats. Our downed soldier (deactivated, lol) womaninwinter is probably the person who comes closest to a beta for me, on rare occasion. I'm stingy with most things, partly because I worry I'll get weird about feedback, probably more so because if I share too much of a WIP, it scratches the validation itch and I lose steam in working on it.

RCSS here! It's so funny how quickly time passes, but I'm still plugging away on your gift when time allows. Been busy with worth and some not-so-great personal things, but I'm so excited to finish, edit, and share when the time comes! I see that you like historical and fantasy types of au's - I do, too - but what are some of your other favorites?
Hello! Nice to hear from you again!
I'm as excited as you to discover your gift, just thinking about it makes me so happy!
As for AUs - oh boy, I like pretty much any AU, tbh, but some of my favorites are the fusion kind of AU? I think that's the term, you know, when characters from one franchise end up playing in another - like this Rogue One crew as The Old Guard by @theputterer or this Rebelcaptain in GOT setting by @rifle-yes. And I have a fondness for more niche stuff, like this fic where Rebelcaptain enters the GBBO by @mediumsizedfountain or this Star Wars x Firefly crossover by @cacchieressa.
But truly, give me any AU by an author I like, and I'll eat it up ^^

Fic writer asks 9 and 30 please
Thanks! <3
9. Have you ever written for a fandom without watching/reading/playing the source material?
Nope, not that I can think of, and I can't imagine why I ever would. That...completely misses the point of why I write fic, which is because I fall in love with the characters/verse and want to explore them further. I have written for a fandom for which I'd only seen a small amount of the source material, though - a brief crossover ficlet between Firefly (my beloved) and Supernatural. But even then, I had watched a few SPN episodes, so I did at least have some familiarity with the character in question (Dean).
I've READ fic in fandoms I'm not familiar with - crossovers or fusions, again, which I very much enjoy when it's an author I trust - but that's different than trying to tackle the character voices myself.
30. Do you continue to write for a fandom after you’ve moved on or do you focus solely on the new one?
Oh, I'm always multifannish at heart, I just cycle through new primary fandoms every few years. But there's no reason not to dip back into an older fandom if I have a new idea for it! (And then there are the fandoms I never truly leave, a.k.a. X-Men - I can go years without writing or even reading anything in that fandom, but I'll always circle back to it eventually!) So, like, after being all in for TOG fandom for about four years, I'm currently on a bit of a break from it while I hyperfixate elsewhere, but that definitely doesn't mean I'm done with it. ;)

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thanks for the tag @sparrow-in-the-field and @strangethings-everywhere
I guess today is the day that you all get to learn about my other AO3 account since a lot of these Qs are about overall stuff lol.
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
59
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
846,116 which is insane to me, esp as more than half that is one fic
3. What fandoms do you write for?
MCU - Phlint and Stucky Stranger Things - Steddie 9-1-1 - Buddie Criminal Minds - Reid/Hotchner Firefly - Jayne/Mal H50 - McDanno TBITB - Coxstroke Merlin - Merthur NCIS - Tony/Gibbs SG-1 - Jack/Daniel The Sentinel - Jim/Blair
4. Top five fics by kudos?
He Whom My Soul Loves (Stucky) - 988 A Diaz By Any Other Name (911) - 970 The Man On The Wall (Stucky) - 929 Magic Man (Merthur) - 781 The Royal Camelot (Merthur) - 650
5. Do you respond to comments?
I love answering comments. If someone can take the time to leave a comment, I always do my best to answer. Not always immediately, but I get there!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angriest ending?
I don't think I've ever written anything with an angry ending. Maybe not happy, per se, but not angry
7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Uhhh probably The Man On The Wall because after a 475k slow burn, Bucky finally gets his kiss
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I have done! Not in a while, but not because I'm any better, but because I'm such a teeny writer, nobody cares enough to be rude anymore!
9. Do you write smut?
Yup! Though by the time I'm done writing it it feels dry as the Sahara and textbook dull, I can only hope it reads better and that I'm just jaded after spending ages working on it
10. Craziest crossover?
I've done fusions, but not a crossover. Not yet!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yup! Why they'd choose mine, I don't know. Also had them added to goodreads against my wishes
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Never been asked! I've had art made for fic, and someone wanted to do a podfic version of one, but never translated.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Absolutely not!! I'm too much of a control freak and if my procrastination and oh-so-slow writing annoys me, it'd enrage even the calmest of co-writers! I wouldn't do that to an innocent person!
14. All time favorite ship
Honestly, I have favourite ships in a fandom, but narrowing down a favourite of all of them, I don't think I can!!! Cop out answer FTW!
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
While I never start a fic in the hope of maybe finishing it as I always start with the intention to finish, sometimes they end up so big, or are outside my sphere of limited talent that they peter out. I have 120k of a Night At The Museum type AU for Stucky that has sat on my hard-drive for nearly a decade, and I'm 65k into a OFMD fic that I'm determined to finish, but at the moment the OFMD is the far far more likely fic to see the light of day
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue for sure. I can write whole fic that are just nothing but dialogue, and then I go back in and fill it out. The dialogue is the skeleton I work the rest onto
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Everything not dialogue!! Everything
18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
....I don't have any?!?
19. First fandom you wrote in?
Probably Harry Potter some 20 years ago
20. Favorite fic you've written?
The Man On The Wall is my baby. I wrote it twice so its my sweetheart. It was also a serious labour of love at 474,747 words (also I love how neat that word count is) very very close second is Life, Written and Illustrated By in the Merlin fandom. It was my first foray into Merthur and was part of a competitive pornathon and I won that weeks with it so huuuuge confidence boost for my writing

20 questions for fic writers
tagged by @yee-hawlw
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
208!
2. what's your total ao3 wordcount?
524,331
3. what fandoms do you write for?
top five would be warriors, moon knight, star trek, overwatch, and homestuck. i haven't posted anything for overwatch or homestuck in AGES tho, and i've got a good number of fic plans for fandoms i've never posted for. i just like to be complicated like that ig.
4. what are your top five fics by kudos?
burned off the tapestry; drarry. written in high school.
ashes; squirrelflight/ashfur. in dear deserving of an update. i'll get there. eventually.
if i ever get the nerve to say hello; k/s accidentally secret relationship where uhura thinks she's dating spock.
better left unsaid; po3 slight-crack about everyone knowing the three aren't biologically squirrelflight's.
a cool summer night (and this sweet breeze); some hollywillow/kestreljay nonsense. can't believe this one is in my top 5. i don't even ship kestreljay. i don't even LIKE kestreljay. it's only in this fic because the premise required it.
5. do you respond to comments? why or why not?
i try, but not very often. honestly sometimes i forget, sometimes i'm busy, sometimes it's just too much. basically all my fics have moderated comments because i have had Issues with commentors in the past, but. i collect the comments in my inbox and love them very mcuh.
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
oof, tough question. i'm gonna go with "anything at all," which uh. ends with a mother finding her teenage daughter dead by drug overdose. i don't think it's my best work, i wrote it when i was like 15, but it's probably the worst ending.
7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
oh shit i have to go thru all my fics again? damn. this is easier and harder than the previous one. i like to write happy endings! i prefer it! but i limited myself to only fics with happy endings, not, like. fluff pieces that are all happy. and with that, i'm gonna go with "i see the moonlight steal across your sheets." yes, it is the daddy kink tigerdove one, but it has a very happy ending with very little bittersweet.
runners up include: "a firefly is forever (you know my answer)", "a tree called life," and "it's mere assignment."
8. do you get hate on fic?
rarely. in my inbox is more common. i moderate comments for a reason tho LOL.
i think people on ao3 are much less likely to have problems with me because things are always tagged and warned for. you can't really go into a fic from me and not know what you're getting into.
9. do you write smut?
yes, but i haven't finished anything to publish. which is funny. because i write a lot of smut. [i do have one explicit fic, but. it's not smut.]
10. do you write crossovers?
my first ever fic (written and posted when i was ten) was a crossover. other than that...i write fusions, sometimes. i have a warriors & night circus crossover which is a proper crossover but doesn't really engage with the world as a crossover, if that makes sense. they're not really my thing tho.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that i remember? i think i've had to address people over copied paragraphs, but i don't think i remember the details of that. it could've been me noticing someone else's work being copied.
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
yes! and it was very kind of the person who did so.
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
...it's complicated.
i'm working on a co-written fic rn tho.
14. what's your all-time favorite ship?
character named james who goes by something else X guy who is constantly getting into situations.
(not really a joke, three of my favorite tags on ao3 fit this description. house/wilson, k/s, steve/bucky.)
15. what's a WIP you want to finish but probably won't?
ohf, i'll admit it here ig. i have a shrewsquirrel piece, "waiting for me in some unholy sunlight," that i really adore. but uh the ending. it ends in a bittersweet way, and uh. well. the ending i had planned ended up more-or-less happening irl. so. i can't. i just can't.
16. what are your writing strengths?
tenacity. lol. uh, i think i'm good at description when i let myself get into it. and i think i'm good at like. the structural elements of writing.
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
actually fucking finishing things. and. i've gotten a lot better at it, but i still struggle to keep a balance between narration and dialogue. sometimes it feels like there are pages between two sentences in a conversation.
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?
goddamn this is something i've done. i think i've mentioned most of the fics involving this here also. okay. so. i'm going to answer with what i do, because there's not, like, one right solution to this. what i prefer to do is keep everything in english, and use dialogue tags to specify what language is being spoken. however, if it's a single word, or a specific phrase, i might keep it in the original language, for flavor/"it's a concept that doesn't translate well."
i have written a fic with sentences in spanish, and i took a long time to make hover translations work, except it doesn't have accents because to this day i can't figure out how to make it work. sobbing and crying etc.
i don't think i would do that with a language i didn't know. in that case, the character being latina was important to how i wanted to angle the story, so it made sense. i'm not sure if i'd do that in a different situation?
basically i play things very by ear. if i was writing a physical book with pages, i would use footnotes fairly heavily, but it's not the same on ao3. you have to lose your place to check a footnote. like, even if it's linked back to the spot (which, y'know, i would do, now that i know how to make footnotes), it jars you a bit.
19. first fandom you wrote for?
i'll give you half the cross over, MLP:FIM
20. favorite fic you've written?
that would be telling ;3
tagging @kudossi, @creed-of-cats, and @secondyearpigeon, with no pressure. anyone else who wants to is welcome <3

K, P, X
K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?
Ope I already mentioned this a bit here but I'll give the same answer. I really love Kim Secretan's arc. I kind of get the sense that at the beginning of Will Darling Adventures, he's just slightly above the lowest point in his life and on shaky ground. He can't communicate without lying for the majority of the series. He's a manipulative bastard and he's pretty awful to Will and it's not entirely Kim's fault but it's not entirely not his fault either. But he chooses to commit to doing better and he follows through. He accepts the terms that Will sets for trusting him, and he chooses to live up to that trust. It's great I love it.
P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).
I suppose I can't use the cursed Homestuck/WDA AU where the members of Zodiac are the trolls associated with the symbol on their wrists. Oh here's a good one! Firefly AU: Will is an ex-Independent soldier; Kim is a rich boy from the inner planets working for a shadowy branch of the Alliance government. Actually yeah that's something I'd write.
X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.
Ooooh this one is tricky because the tropes that I like are usually very specific to the fandom or the characters. Tropes I like for Fandom A aren't always what I'll like for Fandom B, etc. That being said, I love crossovers and fusions (especially if the two crossover fandoms are very distinct from each other - I've written some Firefly/Merlin crossover fics and it was a ton of fun melding the two worlds together), mutual pining, and both friends to lovers and enemies to lovers, especially if they are on opposite sides of a political or ideological conflict (like Silas Mason and Dominic Frey - delicious rivalry)
Thank you for asking! =)

AU-gust 2024 Day 20
Crossover/Fusion
Star Wars and Firefly
Mal was fast coming to the realization that trading the Alliance for the Empire was like trading the Devil for a ship full of Reavers. Once again, like so many times before, he was stuck on a nowhere planet doing nowhere business with nowhere people. Emphasis on the nowhere people.
“The buyer said Mos Eisley, right?”
“Yes, Wash.” Mal replied without turning around. “Mos Eisley. My ears hear just fine.”
Wash followed his captain a few more steps toward the dirty cantina before opening his mouth again. “But if the buyer isn’t in Mos Eisley, where else could he be?”
Mal stopped short and spun around. “Don’t know, Wash. Out in the desert? Oh, wait. We ARE in the desert.”
“Ok, ok. No need to get all snippy. We can ask in the cantina. Maybe someone in there knows.”
Mal spun back around and trudged towards the cantina kicking up dust behind him. Wash coughed. “Damn desert. Shoulda stayed on the ship with Zoe.”
“If you had stayed on the ship, then Zoe would’ve been right here and I wouldn’t have to listen to your moanin’."
The inside of the cantina was incredibly dark and smoky. Mal got that they were trying to keep the blazing sun out, but what happened instead was quite like a clay oven with no windows to vent all the humidity.  The annoying music on incessant repeat didn’t help his mood either.
“Well, this is not better.” Wash mumbled under his breath. “Mal, I need a drink. Want one?”
“One.” He wasn’t planning on drinking, but he could feel himself roasting from the inside out. Maybe a drink might help to cool him a bit.
Wash placed his order and waited patiently while Mal scanned the darkness for anyone who might be able to help. He couldn’t even tell what race some of these patrons were and he had not had time to brush up on his alien dialects before landing. This trip might be a wasted one.
The bartender set down two tall glasses in front of Wash and then yelled towards the door, “Hey. We don’t serve their kind here. You’re droids, they’ll have to wait outside.”
Mal and Wash turned around to see a lanky kid dressed all in white saunter up to the bar and order the same thing the bartender had just set down.  Wash nodded at him and they left to find a table.
“Do you even know any of these people, Mal?”
“Been here same as you. You know anybody?”
Mal found a table in the corner and sat down with his back to the wall. Wash sat across from him. After several long minutes of surveying the dark bar of all its customers Mal pointed over towards the bar. “That old man looks like he knows a few things.”
Wash looked over to where Mal pointed. His graying head barely poked out of the oversized brown robe, but it didn’t seem to affect his movement in the slightest. “Go ask him if he knows where we can find Dengar.”
Wash stood to approach the elderly gentleman, but immediately sat down when a blue light shot out from his right sleeve and sliced through the shoulder of a bully that seemed to be bothering the kid in white.
“Gorram bar fights.” Mal muttered. “Looks like grandpa knows a few more things than I previously suspected.”
The elderly gentleman turned to look directly at Mal and began approaching him. “Looks like I won’t have to go ask him.” Wash said. “He’s coming to ask me.”
“Excuse me, gentlemen.” The elderly man sat in the third and final chair across from Mal. “I’m looking for transport to Aldaraan.”
“Not headed in that direction, old timer.” Mal smiled. “Don’t have room if I was.”
“We wouldn’t be any trouble.” The kid had walked up behind him to invite himself to the conversation.
“Not a question of trouble. Question of room. Don’t have none.”
The elderly gentleman nodded. “Do you happen to know of any transport ships that would be able to help us out?”
Mal nodded over to the opposite corner of the room. “Guy over there has got a ship he seems keen on. Braggin’ how fast it can run through Kessel.”
The older man stood. “Many thanks for your assistance.”
“Maybe you can help us right quick.” Mal said before the man walked away. “Know where we can find us a hunter goes by the name of Dengar?”
The older man nodded. “Jabba’s Palace. Not too far east of here if you have a speeder.” He smiled at Mal and Wash then turned to walk across the bar.
“C’mon. We got a hunter to find.” Mal stood without finishing his drink.
“What’s a jabba?”
“Don’t know. Don’t care. Only care about gettin’ rid of this gorram cargo and gettin’ off this desert.”
