There was a small knock on the door and Florence pushed herself to the edge of the bed, hopeful that the new arrival was who she had been waiting for. A moment later her youngest daughter walked into the room with a small child that Florence hadn’t seen in years, but would recognize anywhere.

Zelda’s smile was as soft as she always remembered, only there was a calmness emanating from her that Florence would never have expected. She stood to hug them hello and Zelda scooped up the small, curious child from the floor so that she could see her grandmother.

Violette immediately reached out to Florence and she laughed merrily, “And here I was concerned that you wouldn’t remember me, little one.” Zelda smiled at them, her own worry that Violette would have forgotten her grandmother now happily quieted, “Should you be standing, mother? Let’s sit, please. I don’t want to tire you.”

Violette sat there for hours, listening to the adults talk as she twirled Florence’s unkept curls and marveled at her grandmother’s English accent, so much stronger and more mesmerizing than the one that she was used to hearing from her own mother.

They spoke for so long and with such elation that when Virginia came in to check on them Florence couldn’t quite hide her exhaustion any longer. She gently passed her laughing grandchild to her daughter so that she could play with her cousins in the adjacent room.

The moment that Violette was gone, it was like the string that was holding Florence upright suddenly snapped. She fell back onto the bed and Zelda slid to the floor, frightened by her mother’s sudden shift in demeanor and desperate to make her more comfortable.

Florence looked toward Zelda and spoke in a remarkably calm voice, “My child, could you please sing me the song that you did for your father? The one that you wrote for him on your birthday? I would like to fall asleep hearing exactly what he heard; maybe that will make it easier for me to find him when I get wherever I’m going.”

Zelda knew what her mother was asking, so she grabbed her hand and sang to her softly as quiet tears rolled down her face. She remembered her father and the way his hand had felt the last time she had held it, the last time that she had sang this song.

Florence listened to her child’s quiet voice as the world became more and more hazy; until finally, her green eyes closed seemingly in sleep, never to open again.

The Second Saturday Night Dinner

There was no longer any avoiding it. Penelope knew she was going to have to tell her parents. She was coming out about Little Lime. Her parents were in a particularly good mood this evening, so there was no better time. The mood would be wrecked, regardless, might as well not do it when they're already mad. It might kill them. No, tonight was definitely the night.

Annalise was humming along in their kitchen preparing dinner. She'd had a fantastic day. She had just been notified that she would be getting the first cup of tea at her next tea parting with the ladies, a most coveted position. Her expose email about Florence Darlington's inability to sell all the tables at their next fund raiser put her in bad graces, paving the way for Annalise to step in and make things just so. As such, she could not have been happier; an enemy's demise was always uplifting.

"How was your day, dear?" Annalise said, looking at Darion.

"Great. Sorry to have my phone out at the table, Anna, I know how you hate that. Parker over at the office just needed confirmation on the San Myshuno contract. I am all yours now."

"Thank you. Penelope? How was your day?"

"Fine," she said, sounding tired. Or was that hesitation? No no, Annalise's day was going just as it should, she was not going to go looking for problems with her daughter. Not today.

"Great! This is just great," Annalise continued. "What a wonderful day."

Oh boy, Penelope thought.

They ate a few bites, appreciating the comfortable silence. Well, what the Harpers thought was a comfortable silence. Penelope struggled with every bite, riddled with anxiety.

You're just going to have to say it, Pen. Just....just say the words. Boy, do you think there are any 24 hour hazmat rental shop nearby for all the fallout that's about to happen, Little Lime?

"Oh! Penelope, I meant to ask you how your garden is doing. You're so secretive about it." Annalise was actually smiling at her daughter. Penelope lost some of her nerve, unable to look her mother in the eyes.

"Oh , you know, it's growing," she said. "I think I may have a chance at the Finchwick Fair one day with the flowers."

"Well, I think that's just wonderful. I wish you'd let me see it, but every girl needs her own special place." Annalise laughed. "It's like your own secret garden. I loved that book as a girl."

Penelope also laughed, however the nervous air in which she did so made her father stare at her a little too intently. "Well," she said. "Speaking of secrets, I have something I have to say."

"Alright, what is it?" Annalise said. She managed to still stay perky, but the glitter had worn off her tone a little.

Penelope took a deep breath and looked straight forward, still unable to make eye contact with either parent. "I'm pregnant."

Darion sighed and gestured at his daughter. "Penelope, now this is a serious topic and not appropriate for one of your little jokes. Now, your mother has had a great day. There's no need to ruin it with your antics. Besides, being pregnant as a teenager would be incredibly irresponsible!'

'For three decades Searchlight Pictures has consistently stood firm as an awards season and box-office powerhouse, punching through with titles including The Full Monty, Black Swan, Slumdog Millionaire, Twelve Years A Slave, The Shape Of Water, Nomadland and The Banshees Of Inisherin. Initially established in 1994 as Fox Searchlight Pictures, a specialty production and distribution division of 20th Century Fox, the company has stayed true to its path of supporting independent, often edgy, film­making voices that can also find favour with audiences, as exemplified by the trio of hot titles in play this awards season: Poor Things, All Of Us Strangers and Rye Lane.

What is less known is the pivotal role that its lean UK operation has played in driving the creation of these and other titles on the Searchlight slate. “I think some people still don’t realise we’re here, and how bespoke we are,” says Katie Goodson-Thomas, executive vice president, head of film production and development and the founding member of Searchlight’s UK team. “There’s an assumption that everything is somehow just coming out of the US.”

Smooth operation

The UK office has been running since 2013, with UK projects previously overseen from Los Angeles. “The Full Monty was the film that made them realise the UK could be a foothold,” reflects Goodson-Thomas. The Bafta- and Oscar-winning 1997 comedy was backed by Film4 at development stage, but the UK funder opted out for production, with Searchlight fully financing at a $3m budget and later grossing more than $250m worldwide. Searchlight’s further notable UK forays included backing Bernardo Bertolucci’s Stealing Beauty, produced by Jeremy Thomas’s Recorded Picture Company, and Never Let Me Go. The company distributed Sexy Beast (2000), Bend It Like Beckham (2002), The Last King Of Scotland (2006) and Slumdog Millionaire (2008).

Goodson-Thomas, a former producer, initially joined to work across both Searchlight and private equity fund Ingenious Media, which had struck a co-financing deal in 2011, and was tasked with searching the UK for new investment projects. “For the first year, I didn’t even have an assistant,” she recalls. But Goodson-­Thomas fought to get the UK noticed. After two years she was moved into the now shuttered 20th Century Fox Soho Square office, to work solely for Searchlight.

“Partly that was because I had been a British producer before, so I was more proactive than they were used to,” she says. “Suddenly we had a slate, and there were loads of films about to go. Also, the industry here over the past decade has continued to get stronger and stronger, and they could see there was commercial potential.”...

The London office’s production and development squad now totals a small but mighty four, headed up by Goodson-Thomas, who along with her US counterpart DanTram Nguyen has joint oversight of film development and production on both sides of the Atlantic; they report into Searchlight’s US-based co-­presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum. “We both run everything, and we have each other, but I tend to oversee the UK [and European] productions in a more hands-on way, and she tends to oversee the US ones,” she says.

In the UK, Goodson-Thomas works alongside Pete Spencer, director of development and production, who came to Searchlight in 2017 from Big Talk Pictures and oversees the day-to-day running of the London office. They are supported by two assistants, Florence Darlington and Tara Williams, who are across development and talent outreach.

Rounding out the team are legal and business affairs and marketing and distribution, bringing the total Searchlight UK workforce to around 15, most of whom are based in Disney’s corporate HQ in Hammersmith, west London. The production and development team, however, stayed behind in Soho, moving into a comfy fifth-floor base in London’s media heart, after Fox’s Soho Square office was closed in the wake of the Disney acquisition...

Being embedded in the UK industry allows Goodson-Thomas and her team to keep close ties with the public funders, BBC Film, Film4 and the BFI, and UK-based producers, tracking projects and talent and looking for the right opportunities for Searchlight to come on board at the development stage, as a co-­producer and/or as a financier and executive producer. Film4 in particular is a regular partner — Poor Things was co-financed with Film4 and All Of Us Strangers was developed by Film4 and financed by Searchlight — but it also works with the BFI and BBC Film, as it did on Rye Lane, which the three partners co-financed.

They also have longstanding ties with some of the UK’s leading independent producers. Goodson-­Thomas started her career at Graham Broadbent and Damian Jones’ Dragon Pictures, collaborating with the producers again on All Of Us Strangers and Rye Lane through Broadbent’s Blueprint Pictures and Jones’ DJ Films respectively...

All Of Us Strangers is nominated for six Baftas, including outstanding British film of the year and best director. At time of writing it had passed $3.5m (£2.8m) at the UK-Ireland box office after 10 days on release. The Searchlight team had been tracking the project for some years, with Film4 developing an adaptation of Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel Strangers with Goodson-­Thomas’s former employer Broadbent and Blueprint. When Andrew Haigh boarded as director, it became a no-brainer for Searchlight.

“Andrew is the perfect example of the type of filmmaker we want to work with, but it had to be the right project,” she says. “We like to bring those auteur voices to a wider audience.”...'

The sun broke over the tree line of Henford-on-Bagley, illuminating the remaining mist in the air and sending a shimmer of iridescence along the river. From outside, life at Darlington cottage had seemingly continued unchanged for decades.

Yet inside, Florence had been in and out of consciousness for days. Her body was slowly trying to let go, but she wouldn’t let it.

She could hear the constant low hum coming from the living room that accompanied any death bed. My death bed, she thought with a small sigh. She turned to look at Oliver, is this how you felt my love? Knowing they were all out there, just waiting for something to happen?

Although the photo was even more faded now than when it was first taken, she could still see how blue his eyes had been. They called out to her from across time, making her painfully aware of how long it had been since she’d heard his voice. Not yet, my love. Not yet. There were voices that she didn’t hear in the hum outside her room, voices that she had to hold on just a bit longer to hear.

But no matter how much she tried, there was one voice that she wouldn’t be able to hear. Rosella. Rosella should be here, huddled in the living room with her siblings, playing with her nieces and nephews the way that she had once loved to play with Zelda and Isaiah.

Florence shut her eyes tightly against the tears that clouded her vision and engulfed her in dreams of the way that night could have gone. If only she had been more caring, more reassuring, then maybe her daughter would never have left, maybe she would still be alive…

No, Florence told herself. She had tread that path of regret her whole life, she wouldn’t tread it on her death bed too. Besides maybe, just maybe, she would see her daughter again soon; then she could hold her and stroke her hair the way that she should have that night, the night that she walked out the door never to return.

Florence was jolted from her reveries by the sound of the front door of the cottage. Suddenly, the hum outside the room grew louder, the voices tinged with the merry tones of reunion, forgetting why they were all gathered there in the first place.

Florence pushed herself up on the bed. Finally, it was time.
