old news but I've been seeing ppl call johnny's alien lover a centipede and I feel that it should be known that she is literally just. hallucigenia with big eyes. human-sized hallucigenia with different head.

like if johnny ever happens to stumble across information on extinct cambrian ocean worms he'll be having some flashbacks.

Found some old printmaking supplies and have banged out a few things. Not sure what they'll be used for; I tend to make images first & think of uses later.
This print is just a test in my sketchbook. I wonder how this would come out with proper ink on good paper & pressed properly...
Animal factoid: Did you know coelacanths don't have a backbone? They have a flexible notochord instead!

i wonder if theres some kind of evolutionary advantage that little electric rodents have that makes them pop up in every region. are they just an integral part of the ecosystem? did they evolve independently or are they all descendants of the same ancestor?
sure you could be Lazy & say "uhh all the pikaclones are just gamefreak trying to recapture the success of pikachu until it just became tradition" but that is boring & does not answer my question. unless gamefreak is an in-universe company genetically engineering new electric rodents, but even then i still think the concept of long-term Evolution in pokemon is more interesting (do they call it smth else? "evolving" in the pokemon world happens in mere seconds it seems, so how would they describe the kind of change that takes place over many many years?)

What is YOUR favorite dinosaur 🦖 👊👊👊
Ok so this is actually a really difficult question because I have a very deep love for a lot of prehistoric life for a wide variety of reasons. But I think the dinosaurs im most attached to are a lot of the weird, fucked up, strange herbivores:
The variety of triceratops & the various close species that fill the same shape & niche are a big point of interest- as well as stuff like Ankylosaur & the Pachycephalosaurus. Im so interested in these because so many of them just like- didn’t become anything. Like there is no modern triceratops long distantly evolved relative- triceratops & so many other absolutely stellar creatures are especially interesting to me because they are entirely alien to all we currently have on the planet. But some how, through insane luck & circumstance; we get to see these alien bones & learn about them & I think thats so fucking cool
Oh but also I’ve been obsessed with Parasaur & Spinosaur since I was tiny so probably those above all else.
Niche-r dino I love a lot is Psittacosaurs. No one talks abt it except dino & fossil nerds & a really astounding Psittacosaurs fossil went viral a few years back but outside of that no one really cares in the general public ✊😞🦖
Edit: sorry 4 rant

ok so i found a fossil
Tumblr media
this mf was just. sitting in the middle of the school field?? like right next to the long jump pit in the grass?? what are the odds
think this might be a sand dollar but idk
also it's vaguely heart shaped which is very cool
Tumblr media
back side of the rock! i'm pretty sure this is chert (conchoidal fractures, sharp)
funny thing is i didn't even see the sand dollar at first i only saw the back side and i thought "hey that's a nice piece of chert" and then i turned it over and HOLY SHIT A FOSSIL
this was truly one of the moments of all time, imagine going to school and finding a fossil

Happy #GeologistsDay! The early history of the field of geology is fascinating, and surprisingly explosive – and we explored it in our video on the word “Fossil”.

Oh my God how did I convince myself Lenora's museum CURATOR instead of the director?
While a curator and a director have common duties they're not exactly the same... I made the rookie mistake of treating both terms as synonyms.
Lenora is an archaeologist and a museum director. Important to keep in mind

TIL where the term "jet black" comes from.
Jet is considered a gemstone, but it's basically a type of fossilized Araucaria wood.
