He has to be calling the shots. He has to be in control of the process. Whenever he’s not (Thalia, Jason, etc) he can’t stand it.

It's the end of a hot summer's day. Gojo's students are practicing on the training grounds as he watches over them. Among the group is you, Megumi's senior by one year, who he crushes on like crazy.

"Is he just... thumbing through his socials?" Megumi asks incredulously.

"Why do you look disappointed? You can take this opportunity to stare at her without getting your ass whooped." Yuji teases.

"What the hell are you on about?" Megumi scowls at his friend.

"Acting dumb won't win girls." Yuji says matter-of-factly.

"Yeah, you would know." Megumi bites.

"Ow." Yuji clutches his chest, "Puppy's got a bite..."

"Don't call me puppy."

"What's up, puppy?"

"Nobara, no."

Nobara shares a braincell with Yuji on thinking that Megumi behaves like a puppy towards you. But Yuji thinks he could shoot his shot, meanwhile Nobara...

"Nah, she's too cool for you." Nobara says.

"What the hell!" Megumi looks at both of them like they're crazy. "Stop talking shit... I don't even have a thing for her, you crazy bastards are making this up." he spoke quickly, face reddening and voice going hoarse as he got overly defensive.

"Okay, puppy." Nobara teases. "Whatever you say. We can see you're getting all defensive..."

Megumi gets even more defensive, defending himself about being defensive. It makes Yuji and Nobara laugh. They're taunting the poor boy a bit.

"... can you two shut up and get back to practice... I don't want to get chewed out again." Megumi glares.

So they get back to practice, but giggle through it. Megumi looks over at you and watches you practicing. Maybe he watches a little too intently, because he zones out.

"MEGUMI. EYES OFF GIRL. FOCUS ON SPARRING. 🫡" Gojo yells from across the field.

"... WHAT?!" Megumi shouts in embarrassment, cringing.

You look over. Megumi makes very awkward eye contact with you and cringes even more. He's going completely red in the face. Yuji and Nobara cave in with laughter. You just seem totally confused.

Gojo knows what he's done. He worsens the situation, holding back his laughter.

He cups his hands around his mouth to amplify his voice, and shouts across the field, "YOU CAN ASK HER OUT AFTER PRACTICE. 👍"

"I'M LEAVING."

I'm going with 10 All Time Classics from the Captain America (MCU) fandom. I mean, they're all classics to me, at least. In no particular order:

1. This, You Protect by owlet

First installment in the Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail series, which are all amazing. It's a “Bucky escaping Hydra and rebuilding his sense of self” fic, which he does while spying on Steve. With eventual Avengers Family and a lovely cast of OCs bonding with Bucky in the meantime. It has a very distinctive perspective and writing style; Bucky's in constant internal (and sometimes accidentally external) dialogue with himself, making it hilarious and tragic all at the same time. I love it. I've recently been getting into The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells and this Bucky has a similar sassy-but-vulnerable vibe? Read this if you like that, anyway.

2. The One Who Knows by Dira Sudis (dsudis)

This is a Political Animals AU, in that no-powers Steve is inserted into the Political Animals world and Bucky is TJ. Discusses being outed and depression but is ultimately hopeful. The author is one of my all time faves and has written lots of great stories for this and many other fandoms.

3. Blue Scales by chaya

Steve is a merman AU. He's still Captain America, though. It's crack with heart, I love it.

Best line: "May your scales and your love story be our weird secret forever.”

4. Our Lingering Frost by eyres

AU where Bucky is rescued from Hydra in the 50s (?) and so is around for Steve to be found.

5. Assets Out of Containment by follow_the_sun

It's a classic to *me*, OK? Bucky goes undercover at Jurassic World just as that movie's plot kicks off. They're Hydra dinosaurs! It's just great. Also has a podfic and crossovers with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

6. Not Easily Conquered (series) by dropdeaddream and WhatAreFears

Some of the greatest fanfiction I've ever read, the whole series is epic. Anyway, it's a "Steve doesn't go into the ice" AU with added queer angst when (never sent) love letters from Bucky resurface. I particularly like the second installment in the series The Thirteen Letters, which are just Bucky's letters and are insanely well-written.

7. to memory now I can't recall by Etharei

Time travel AU! Featuring post-CATWS Bucky accidentally switching places with CATFA era Bucky.

8. If Wishing Made It So by Leveragehunters (Monkeygreen)

Genie!Bucky AU! This author is great at writing AUs with fantasy/genre elements, it was hard to choose. They've also written an excellent werewolf!Steve AU and a horse!Steve AU that I really love.

9. Into That Good Night by Nonymos

An Interstellar AU! Very angsty and tragic but with an eventual happy ending.

10. Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square by Speranza

Speranza must be one of the best writers in the fandom, so it was hard to pick just one of their fics. Other strong contenders were All the Angels and the Saints and The Fifties, so check those out too! But this one has a special place in my heart. Steve, Tony and Natasha accidentally time travel to WW2 London, leading to an accidental run-in with CATFA-era Bucky. The author does tragic and romantic time travel tropes so well, but with a happy ending.

I now realise that most of these are AUs, so here’s a bonus rec for a non-AU in-universe story that’s severely underrated and deserves more love:

Heart, Have No Pity on this House of Bone by Sena

This story follows Bucky in-action in the Pacific Theatre. It’s very well written and, from what I can tell, well researched. Steve only appears in Bucky’s imagination and the story focuses on the horrors of war rather than romance, but it’s gripping! And it explores unrequited love, being closeted and period-typical homophobia, which I also enjoyed. I’m still holding out hope for a sequel.

The coincidence of getting appendicitis at the same time as your boyfriend was a bit unbelievable. The recovery started off as a frenzied hellscape despite having just arrived home. You and Mingi wanted nothing more than to sleep but with 7 boyfriends ranging from a chaotic babygirl that never shuts up to an overprotective mother that insists on cleaning every 15 minutes you two can’t seem to keep your eyes closed. Originally he was in his own room but he was lonely. How he was lonely with at least one boyfriend coming in constantly you weren’t sure but you did like holding his hand as you relaxed in the comfy bed.

After a few hours of this you finally spoke to Seonghwa and Hongjoong, the parents finally ushering the kids out to give you time to actually rest. You knew it wouldn’t last long but you would savor the time while you had it.

Fully relaxed you were still having some discomfort but not in pain. Unlike the poor boy you were holding hands with.

“I’ve never been in pain in my life”

You give him a silent look but squeeze his hand anyway playing the next YouTube video.

Soon you hear the chorus of footsteps. “The nurses are coming”

7 men pile into the room- food, water, meds, heat pads, books all in tow. They’re trying to keep it down but god knows they just can’t. Immediately Woosan get into a whispered dispute about the food.

Matz are fussing over you both respectively, switching so they can each talk to both of you.

Yeo2ho quietly yet chaotically clean the old food containers and water bottles. Dropping some and laughing about it.

Then just like that the door closes behind the last one.

They’re gone. The storm of your boyfriends care had come and gone in an instant and it was dizzying.

“Were they really even here??” He questions

“Well wooyoung ate a chunk of my food and Hongjoong dropped a book on my foot then left it so I think so.”

Just then woo slinks back in and steals another bite and a kiss from both of you before slinking back out.

You two stare at the door. Chaotic.

alright so Crassus is a weird guy, existentially. There’s a tendency to speculate, assign, and insert him into whatever places are conspiratorial and shadowy because he fits into those narrative places with ease. My personal favorite (aside from all of it) is the idea that he may have pulled strings wrt to Sulla and Caesar’s conflict to help get Caesar out of it.

The Defeat of Rome: Crassus, Carrhae and the Invasion of the East, Gareth C. Sampson

In the universe that exists in my head, he definitely had a hand in it, but he didn’t really intend for Caesar to figure out he played a part in it, but Caesar’s good at puzzles, and noticing someone goes both ways. Binding someone to yourself goes both ways.

Crassus: The First Tycoon, Peter Stothard

This scene takes place sometime relatively soon after Sulla’s death. Crassus has complicated feelings about it, Caesar less so. Veni, vidi, vici, baby!
