hey lovely! such a cute rq, i’m down. don’t think i’ve ever mentioned this but jaemin was my first nct bias, so every time i write for him it feels like i’m writing for some long lost first love. anyways, here it goes.

you really wish you had a window seat. maybe then, sitting in class wouldn’t feel like such a drag. pursing your lips, you return your head back to the table as the teacher turns back to the board. you lift it once he turns around once again to face the class. the cycle repeats for the duration of the period, only ending when the bell sounds down the halls at exactly 11:50 AM. lunchtime.

by this time, it’s safe for your friends to assume that you’ve already knocked out after enduring an hour and a half of the monotonous hum of your physics teacher’s lectures; shaking you awake and tugging your limbs out the door, through the hall, and down two flights of stairs is something they do on a daily. but what really jolts you awake is the sound of lisa’s tray thudding down in front of you, paired with a, “so, you mind telling us what all that was about?”

your hand is groggily streaking through your hair, face scrunched in confusion when you reply, “what’s that?” lisa’s complexion denotes incredulity and you’re not oblivious enough to miss that even jisoo’s does as well. lisa follows up, “jaemin? and you?” you pick at the grain of rice that’s escaped the bowl, distractedly, you muse, “jaemin and i...what? what’s up with us?” jennie, who had a different class the previous period, is the last to join your table of five. “what’s up with you and jaemin?”

huffing, lisa relents, “are you guys like...a thing?” jisoo perks up at that, sitting straight with her elbows propped onto the table, “yeah, i saw him stari-” you finish processing lisa’s proposition in the middle of jisoo’s remark, “what?” 

“well we just thought that because he was sta-”

“no, what, no! i-” your voices drops low when you realize who’s sitting two tables down, “he’s right there, you guys might wanna shush up.” they do stop talking about it, but only after jennie adds with a playful glint in her eyes, “why? scared to admit he might like you back?”

jaemin has a window seat, though he wishes he had any other seat in the room. maybe then, he could be closer to you. he doesn’t mind staring from a distance though, something about not needing to be discreet. 

you, on the other hand, are a great deal bored. the period after lunch marks as your least favorite, sucks to say that taking a health course was required. mindlessly, your eyes rove over to the window, hoping to catch a scene of some rowdy boys on the soccer field or maybe an interesting shape in the clouds. instead you’re met with the eyes of na jaemin, burrowing holes into your own. both of you are instantaneous in looking away, heads turned up front, but both of you are also in sync when your heart begins to overwork itself. 

it’s then when it clicks. staring. he was staring at you. you mentally deck yourself in the head with a chair because the girls actually had a point. risking a glance, you dart your eyes over to the boy again, only to swerve back equally as fast when you see that he’s looking right back. 

you pass the majority of the rest of class with your sights held up ahead, for once, though as usual not a word of what your teacher says strings coherent thoughts in your mind. class is over soon, give or take three minutes, when a hand taps urgently on your left shoulder from behind. checking to see that your teacher is still writing out definitions on the board, you turn. the girl behind you has an almost annoyed expression on her face, as if the post-it note she was asked to pass on to you was more a chore than a favor. you also note lisa, who sits behind the girl, currently donning the most anticipating face as she motions for you to hurry up and take it. you assume she knows what it’s about or maybe who it’s from.

what you’re not expecting, as you unfold the pink sticky note, is the writing to be jaemin’s. distinctive in the way he crosses his t’s with swirls. it reads, can i take you on a date after school? with two boxes drawn below, one labeled yes! and the other no! but maybe next time ;).

diligently, you fill in the box as if it were an answer on a scantron test, the blue ink opaque from corner to corner. the bell rings and before the girls even have a chance to launch in your direction, you’re already sending them that look, the one that says ‘i have a love life, go find your own and leave me alone.’ they’re quick to leave but you’re sure your phone is bound to be blown up with questions in just a few moments. you busy yourself with tucking away your textbook and pencil case and everything else except the little slip of paper, all while pretending that you don’t see jaemin’s figure approaching you in your peripheries. 

he’s in front of you now and speaking, two things, both of which you find very hard to digest. you have no clue what he’s saying but you hold out the post-it note for him to see and the smile he gives in return, oh boy, you bet you could stare at it for the rest of your life, even if it meant being stuck in class for all eternity.

The week after Win's death was a blur, it didn't feel real no matter how many times you tried to convince yourself. Convince yourself it wasn't your fault, but it was hard there had been nothing from your new supposed enemy, NCT. It was now 7 o'clock Friday night and you hadn't left your bed, Jungkook had tried his best to cheer you up. You were great full for it, for his kind words of reassurance but even then; Nothing seemed to help, to fill the hole, so you lay there, as your room darkened with the day. You felt gross, dirty, his blood still staining your hands you rolled from your bed forcing yourself to change your clothes— to pretend, at least, that you're alright.

Pretend; You'd guessed you'd done that a lot recently, it became second nature. You didn't want the others to see how truly weak and wounded you were— the emotionally scaring toll that last weeks events had put on you.

Downstairs, Yoongi walked out of the gym, a towel drapped around his neck. The black dri-fit shirt hugged his toned chest and biceps nicely. As he reached the stairs he saw everyone gathered getting ready to go out.

"What's going on?" Yoongi asked with mild confusion.

"We're meeting with SKZ for a trade." Namjoon stated.

"And you didn't think to tell me?" He questioned, everyone's eyes finding another's as they glanced around.

"You're staying and watching y/n." Namjoon stated bluntly before turning to lead the others out the door.

"Why me?" Namjoon stopped and glanced back to Yoongi as the others continued out the door, "Tae's here."

"He's on monitors, suck it up Yoongi, you've delt with worse." Yoongi just rolled his eyes, trudging up the steps, he found your door was cracked open.

His hand raised, ready to knock, but through the crack he saw you. Your bare back facing him as you pulled on an oversized top. He couldn't seem to pull his eyes away from your exposed state no matter how much he wanted to. He watched until you brought your hands to the waistband of your pajama shorts, finally forcing his eyes away not wanting to invade your privacy and see anything more he wasn't meant to.

He could feel his heart pounding insanely in his chest, shaking his head he finally knocked lightly on the wood.

"One minute!" Your voice squeaked in surprise, you quickly pulled on a fresh pair of shorts and hurried to the door. You were surprised to see Yoongi standing at your door, "h-hey, what's up?"

"Uh, Your brother pinned me with watching you." He informed you, his eyes quickly and subtly flicking over your form.

You chuckled, "No need to treat me like a burden."

"Whatever," he looked over you again, only this time you noticed, "What are you doing?"

"I was thinking about watching a movie." You informed him, he pushed past you going deeper into your room, "What are you doing?"

"We're watching a movie aren't we?" You gave him a weird look.

"I guess you can join, I'm going to get water, you want anything?" You asked him, he shook his head as he looked around your room.

You sighed, leaving the room, you stalked down the hall and to the kitchen mindlessly. One might say you were lost in a daze, though in reality it was the sleep deprivation creeping up on you, looming behind your eyes. You hadn't slept beyond three hours the last few nights, not wanting to close your eyes, for fear of the lifeless face of your friend haunting you again.

A chill ran through your body at the thought, grabbing a bottled water from the fridge. You twisted the cap off gulping down a sip in an attempt to swallow the rising lump in your throat. It'd been hard for you to eat, the smell of his blood, thick and irony, it was burned in your nose.

You went back up the steps your footfalls on the polished stone, was all that could be heard. The trance that enraptured your mind however, was quickly broken when you stepped into your bedroom again.

Yoongi was facing you, his features of stone remained stoic but his eyes held amusement. In his hand he held a hot pink object, your face mirroring the shade in embarrassment.

"Tch, frustrated are we?" He joked, pressing the button, a quite vibration emitting from it.

You hurried quickly to him grabbing it and throwing it back in the drawer it belonged, "Min Yoongi you should know better than to go through peoples things." You scolded.

"I can't help my curiosity."

"Just go." You said, the flames in your cheeks never wavering as you pushed him to your door.

"You sure you don't want help?" Yoongi asked as he back up while you pushed him.

"What?!" You asked in horror, stopping to look into his eyes, was he seriously-

"I can hold it for you," his eyes glistened playfully, "While we watch a movie."

You swallowed hard, trying your best to keep your cheeks from blazing any hotter. You quickly and hastily pushed him towards the door.

"You are so crude Min Yoongi." Informing him as you pushed him out into the hall, he gave you a shit eating grin, "I'll be just fine on my own."

The second you shut the door in his face you took in a breath, your heart was pounding in your chest. Thoughts racking through your brain, why had you pushed him out? You like him don't you?

But you guessed it wasn't that simple, your thoughts knew how complicated it would become getting involved with Yoongi. No matter how much your body begged to fall into his tempting grasp you had to restrain. Because the theory of him was what attracted you and so many others, not the cold exterior and troubled heart.

Min Yoongi was complicated, to say the least.

But he was human— the flutter he felt in his chest when you became flustered by merely his words. It confused him not knowing why you filled him with such warmth. But he pushed his thoughts away like any time before.

The next afternoon was somber, quiet, as if no one wanted to speak. You were clad in a black dress and flats, the boys in their suits. They all watched you descend the steps for the first time in what felt like ages. You were burying Win today, finally putting his body to rest, a step of 'moving forward and mourning' they'd said though it just broke you more. But you had to pretend, you couldnt let the others see you as weak. You weren't weak.

"You ok?" Your brother asked, and you could only nod to reassure him. For you knew if you tried to speak you would break down, You were greatful he didn't push for a more sufficient answer to the question. 

The car ride was rather short, a feeling of dread lingering in your heart. You looked out the window of the car upon the lawn, stones where so many others loved ones names were carved in their remembrance. You tried desperately not to cry, to let out a sob and let the boys around you know you were breaking-- shattering in fact. It shouldn't have been him it should've been you, you wanted it to be you; to know that your bestfriends death wasn't on your hands. Maybe it was selfish, but the aching in your heart was begging for the roles to be reversed.

"-Y/n?" You hadn't even realized Jungkook had opened the door for you, his voice bringing you back to reality. Aware again, that you in fact were the one with breath in your lungs. You didn't say anything just stepped out of the car, and followed the others to the site. It was beautiful, a top a grassy hill that looked out over a large expanse of trees, You knew he would've loved it. 

Everyone stood around the grave where the casket was to be lowered. No one spoke, not a word, just stood and looked at the sleek wood that encased Win, or his body rather. The man that stood next to it a bible on hand began to speak, and your eyes drifted to the grey stone.

'The journey doesn't end here;'

"Today, we're here to put a friend to rest, to send his soul home-" The reverend started, but you zoned out, eyes locked on the grass at your feet. You felt numb, How could this be real? Win was supposed to survive to live and be loved, and have an impact everyone he met. Silent tears fell from your eyes, due to both frustration and sorrow. Namjoon noticed from where he stood next to you and pulled you into a hug, holding your head to his chest as your tears soaked his jacket.

"I invite you all forward to put a handful of dirt over casket, you may take this time to say any final words." You let go of Namjoon wiping your cheeks with your hands.

We all moved in a line grabbing a handful of the dirt and taking turns circling to the grave, doing our part. Some taking longer than others to say things aloud or in their heads, everyone who he worked with were left with a positive imprint in their lives due to him. When it was your turn, You looked down to the dirt in your hand before holding your hand over the grave and letting it trickle from your grasp.

"I'm sorry." You whispered, fresh tears brimming your eyes. You turned back to the others, standing next to Yoongi as you watched everyone else. You felt Yoongi's hand brush yours experimentally, before he finally laced your fingers with his. You looked to your hand in his then to his face his eyes those of sympathy and support. Though affection wasn't his strong suit, he wanted you to know he was there. You gave him a weak smile in return

"I give the words said here today, to Seungwin, in hopes they will help his soul move forward. Friends, Death seems cold and dark but it is not extinguishing the light of life. It is putting out the lamp because the dawn has come, and Seungwin lived fully to his dawn."

The final words resonated with you, stuck to your heart. He lived a full life, it may have seemed to be cut short but he was everything anyone could have wished to be. He was great, It should've been me. Your mind invaded with the negative thoughts again a shaky sigh passing your lips as you willed yourself not to cry again, watching the grave workers put the remaining dirt in the grave. The others had started to walk back to the car.

"Y/n, come on." Your brother beckoned quietly, but you shook your head.

"Not yet."

"I'll stay with her." Yoongi's voice sounded from somewhere behind you, You couldn't see it but Namjoon nodded before pressing a feather light kiss to your temple. He was worried, you could feel it radiating off of him, he already had a lot on his plate, the last thing he needed was an emotionally unstable sister.

"Stop blaming yourself," Jen, you went to speak but she waved her hand, "I know you, Y/n, and I know that look." 

You looked around finding Yoongi sitting on a bench a few feet away. You turned your attention back to Jen, and you felt the urge to cry again.

"I'm sorry, Jen." Your lip quivered, and tears began to stain your cheeks again.

"There's nothing to be sorry for." With that she reached into the bag that was on her shoulder pulling out a bottle of liquor, "You can only have some if you promise not to cry." You wiped your cheeks quickly.

"I solemly swear!"

You hiccupped lightly as you sat on the grass next to Win's freshly made grave, Jen was fully laying down and the empty bottle of alcohol was between the two of you. Chuckling as you thought back to your 20th birthday when Win mixed you all his favorite drinks, you were so hung over the next morning.

"Do you remember my 20th birthday?" 

"When you threw up on Win after he got you shit faced? How could I forget?" Jen slurred her words.

"Or when he flipped the table because he was losing in monopoly." You brought up the game nights you'd all have when you were younger.

"Alright you two lets get back home." Yoongi said going to help you up, the sun was setting and he wanted to at least get to the car before it was dark. He helped Jen up next and then guided the two light weight girls to the car.

The whole car ride home Yoongi listened to you and Jen reminisce over your memories of Win. Though even drunk your voice sounded weak and broken as you talked over the good times and Yoongi took notice, him being the only sober one in the car. The wall you'd been keeping up to hide your emotions was crumbling away now that you were drunk, vulnerable.

When Yoongi pulled up Jeonghan was waiting at the doors, ready to take Jen to her room. Jeonghan chuckled lightly as Yoongi told him what happened, before ultimately thanking him for bringing them both home safe. When Jen and Jeonghan walked away Yoongi turned back around to find you sitting down on the gravel drive way.

"Whatcha' doing?" Yoongi asked with a hint of amusement in his tone, though it made a deep pout form on your lips.

"I can’t walk."

"Why not?"

"I'm sad." Your voice broke.

"Ok, You think you can get on my back?" Yoongi asked quietly, you nodded, and so he carried you. 

"I miss him." You whispered, which happened to be right in his ear,

"I know."

When he reached your room he set you down on the bed, then going to slip your shoes off your feet. When he looked back to your face though, he saw a tear fall from your eye.

"Its all my fault." You spoke suddenly taking him off guard.

"Hm?"

"Win is dead because of me." You chocked out, "I-I should have saved him." Silent sobs now shook your small frame.

"Y/n, None of what happened was your fault, there was no way to know."

"He blames me- It sh-should've been m-me" You managed to get out as more sobs fell past your lips. You couldn't control it anymore nor hold it in, something and Yoongi's chest ached with each strangled sob you tried to keep quiet in your throat. He picked you up lightly to make room for himself on your bed and he pulled you close to his chest.

"Shhh, No one blames you, Y/n. We cant go back, we can't change what happened, its destined to fate. You don't need to blame yourself anymore."

Not another word was spoke that night, Yoongi held you as you cried yourself into a deep sleep. He stroked your head, as your breathing became less labored with your sobs. His heart ached part of him hated to think that you felt all alone, and made him want to hold you tighter. But the other part wondered, since when did he care?

Na Jaemin was one of the popular kids at your high school and it was pretty easy to see why. Smart and athletic, kind and funny. He was full of charisma and charm. With that popularity came a lot of invitations to hang out, join clubs, and attend parties. He enjoyed interacting with everyone, being the social butterfly that he is, so the attention never bothered him. It did, however, bother you.

You were Jaemin’s best friend, so everywhere he went, you weren’t far behind, usually being dragged along whether you wanted to go or not. And most of the time, you definitely did not want to go. It’s not that you hated crowds or anything, you just had no interest in social gatherings. You’d much rather enjoy your solitude while playing video games.

Halloween was around the corner and you were feeling conflicted. You were planning on having a Friday the 13th tournament with a few of your online friends, but you knew deep down that Jaemin would probably try and drag you to one of the many parties happening around that time. Haechan was another popular kid, though not nearly as popular as Jaemin, and every year he hosted a huge party for the entire school on Halloween night.

Every year, he invited you and every year you politely declined. And every year, Jaemin dragged you along with him anyway.

You yawned, stretching your arms above your head as the final bell rang. You gathered your things and stood up, glancing over at Jaemin. As usual, he was surrounded by people, all talking animatedly about one thing or another. You frowned, not wanting to disturb them, so you silently slipped out of the classroom. While most people were part of a club, you couldn’t be bothered to ever join one, though Jaemin had tried to persuade you to join one.

As you reached the school gate, someone called out your name. You glanced over your shoulder, seeing Jaemin running up to you. “Don’t you have practice, Jae?”

He nodded, offering you a bright smile. “You left without saying anything. I wanted to make sure you were okay.”

Your heart fluttered as you rubbed the back of your neck. “You were talking to your friends, I didn’t want to interrupt. Sorry.”

“They are my friends, sure, but you are my best friend. You take priority,” he poked your forehead.

Your lips tugged up into a smile. “Next time, I’ll let you know. Sorry about that.”

He nodded, satisfied. “I’ve got to get to practice. I’ll text you later. Be safe on your way home!”

“Don’t get hurt at practice!” you called after him, watching as he ran back to the school.

You readjusted the bag on your shoulder and headed for the market to get some stuff for dinner. Next to the market was a small shop, the sign reading ‘Zeref’s Spells & Voodoo’. The word ‘Halloween’ was nowhere to be found, but a pumpkin carved with a sinister face sat in the window.

Curiously, you glanced around before stepping into the shop. The lights hanging from the ceiling gave off a faint yellow glow, casting shadows across the dark walls lined with shelves. On the shelves were bat wings, bones, and strange-looking liquids in jars.

You walked carefully down the thin aisles, trying not to knock anything over. None of the strange items really caught your eye until you got to the back of the store. A black rectangular box was sat on a dark oak display table, surrounded by folded clothes on one side and jewelry spread out on the other.

You reached your hand out to touch the box but hesitated, your hand hovering above it. It felt like something was trying to pull your hand away from the box, like a strong breeze pushing you in the opposite direction.

“May I help you?” A voice drawled from behind you, making you jump and turn around. The voice had come from an older man, hunched over a wooden cane. He looked around five feet tall, with thinning gray hair combed over to one side. His beady eyes were half-lidded like he was falling asleep.

He made you feel uneasy.

You cleared your throat, shifting from one foot to the other. “Um, no, I was just looking around.”

He huffed, turning and slowly hobbling toward the register. “If you didn’t enter the store with the intent to buy anything then leave, lest bad fortune befall you.”

You didn’t need to be told twice. You left the store, trying to shake off the chill that had settled over your body.

As the bell above the door echoed throughout the store, words started to appear on the black box, crudely drawn as if a child had written them with a crayon.

It was the day of Halloween, but it was a Thursday so class was still in session, but most of the students paid no mind to the lessons being taught that day. Excited chatter filled the air as the students talked about their costumes of choice and the plans they had for that night. Most were talking about Haechan’s party.

You sat at your desk, absentmindedly tapping your pencil on the textbook as you stared out the window. ‘It’s strange. Every year since middle school, Jaemin always asked me to go with him to Haechan’s party three days before Halloween but this year, he hasn’t mentioned it to me once.’

“Alright class, before the bell rings I’d like to say a few things.” The teacher announced, waiting for the room to quiet. “Now, I know today is about having fun, but don’t do anything stupid. Be smart and be safe!”

The bell rang and everyone grabbed their things, filing out of the room. You glanced back at Jaemin’s desk and he gave you a smile, excusing himself from the crowd before approaching you.

“Clubs are canceled today,” he said.

You nodded, wondering if you should ask him about the party. You decided against the idea as the two of you walked side by side out of the school. Both of you lived in the same neighborhood, just a couple houses apart from one another. He paused in front of your house.

“I’m gonna go change out of my uniform and I’ll be right over.”

You tilted your head as you watched him jog down the street. ‘Did he forget he has spare clothes at my place?’ you briefly wondered before shaking your head and entering your house. You threw your schoolbag onto the couch. ‘I’ll make some sandwiches for us.’

The front door opened and closed before Jaemin entered the kitchen, dressed in a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and a button-down shirt that he left unbuttoned. He smiled at you, pecking your cheek and taking the sandwich. You sat at the table across from him.

You took a bite, chewing thoughtfully. “Hey, Jae?”

“Yeah?”

“Are you… going to the party?”

“Nope,” he smiled. “I’ve been going every year since middle school. I feel like doing something different this year. Why? Did you want to go?”

“Not even a little.”

He chuckled, wiping his hands on a paper towel. “Don’t worry, we’re going to have fun tonight.”

You watch him with curiosity as he left the kitchen, returning a moment later with a rectangular box. It was black and the cover felt like leather, white letters spelling out ‘Ouija Board’. Underneath that, in a smaller text was ‘a fun interactive board game for the whole family’. Your brow furrowed as your fingers traced the words. Why were you getting a sense of deja vu right now?

He noticed your expression and teasingly said, “Are you scared, Y/N?”

“No,” you answered honestly, cocking your brow at him. “Do you even know how to use this thing? Aren’t there rules?”

“Yeah. I did a lot of research last night and found this page,” he squeezed his butt onto the chair you were sitting on, making half your body hang off the side. He held out his phone so you could see the page he was talking about.

“‘Rule one: Don’t ever taunt a spirit.'” you read out loud. “‘Two: Be careful with your questions and don’t ask when you will die.'” you glanced at Jaemin who raised a brow. “‘Three: Not all spirits tell the truth. Four: Never use a Ouija Board alone. Five: Don’t leave the planchette on the board.'”

“Some of these rules are weird.”

You shrugged and continued reading. “‘Six: Always say goodbye. Seven: Never burn a Ouija Board. Eight: Don’t play at three am.'”

“Isn’t three am the best time to contact spirits?” Jaemin asked, his brow furrowed in confusion.

“I always thought so,” you answered. “Let’s see… it says, ‘At three am, it is more likely that anything can and will come through the spirit board.'”

“‘Anything’? Like… demons?”

“It’s possible, I guess.”

“Any more rules?”

“One more. ‘Number nine: Never let a spirit count down or go through all of the letters.'”

“What happens if they do that?” He leaned forward on the table, his eyes scanning your face as you read.

“‘It can allow them to escape,'” you murmured, setting the phone on the table as you turned to meet his eyes. “I never knew there were so many rules for this.”

“Me neither,” he tapped his finger on the table, thoughtfully. “Do you think we should go through with it?”

“As long as we follow the rules, it should be okay.”

10:00 PM

After moving the coffee table to the side, you and Jaemin sat across from each other on the rug. The lights had been turned off, replaced by a few cream-colored candles that had no scent. The board was placed on the floor between the two of you. Jaemin took the planchette from the box and looked at you.

“Are you ready?”

“As I’ll ever be,” you nodded, watching him set it down onto the board, his fingers on one side while you set yours on the other. “No games,” you warned him.

He nodded his head before clearing his throat. ”Hello? Is anyone with us?”

The room was silent save for the crackling of the candles as the flames danced. The planchette didn’t move.

“If anyone is here, we mean you no harm,” you tried. “We just want to talk.”

The planchette wiggled before slowly moving across the board. Your eyes snapped to Jaemin, who looked just as concerned as you did. Your eyes snapped back to the board.

“H – I,” it stopped moving. “Hi?”

“Can we know your name?” Jaemin asked. Silence. He tried again. “My name is Jaemin.”

“My name is Y/N.”

The planchette wiggled again but stayed put over the I.

“Do you want to talk to us?” Jaemin questioned.

It shook violently, flying across the board.

N – O – T – Y – O – U

“‘Not you’?” you looked at Jaemin, confused.

He had an idea of what it meant, but he wanted to test his theory out to be sure. “What is your name?” he asked again, waiting in silence. “Y/N, try asking the same question.”

“Huh? Why?”

“Just try it.”

“Um, okay…” you cleared your throat. “What is your name?”

It wiggled, sliding across the board.

“I knew it,” he mumbled under his breath before raising his voice, eyes locking on yours. “It’ll only answer you.”

Before you could question him, the front door started to rattle violently, as if someone were trying to force their way into the house. You jumped at the sound, heart picking up speed. There was a loud bang in the kitchen and when Jaemin turned his head to look, the planchette ripped free from your grasp, settling over the NO.

As soon as the noises started, it stopped. Silence settled over the house.

You breathed shakily, putting your hand over your racing heart.

“Y/N,” Jaemin called, softly. His fingers were still on the planchette. “Ask it what it wants.”

You tried to swallow your nerves as you put your fingers back on the planchette, voice wavering. “What is it that you want?”

It started to move across the board, but the second it touched the K, it shot over to P. It continued back and forth like a game of tug-of-war.

“K – P? Are those initials?” Jaemin wondered.

You weren’t so sure. Something was gnawing at the back of your mind and you found yourself asking, “Is there more than one spirit here?”

It stopped dead in the center before slowly creeping over to YES and then to NO.

“So which is it, then?” Jaemin frowned.

“Is… Is there something other than a spirit here?” you breathed out.

It sat still for a moment before moving at an agonizingly slow pace.

YES

All of the candles blew out in one swift whoosh.

“Jaemin!”

“Y/N!”

You were too scared to move.

“One of us has to keep their fingers on the planchette,” he breathed out. “The other person will grab the lights.”

You really didn’t want to be fumbling around in the dark. “I’ll stay.”

“Okay,” he stood up, slowly making his way across the living room. He flicked the light switch a few times, but nothing happened. “Crap.”

“What is it? What’s wrong?”

“I think the breaker tripped,” he headed for his bag sitting on the couch, fumbling around for his phone. When he found it, he turned the flashlight on, making you wince at the sudden brightness.

Using your free hand, you grabbed the lighter and flicking it a few times. It clicked and sparked, but refused to light up. “Didn’t you just buy this thing?”

“Yeah, this morning.”

“It’s out of fuel,” you frowned, setting it back down.

“Okay, I’m going to go get the lights back on. No matter what happens, do not let go of that thing.”

You nodded, applying pressure to the planchette. You watched him disappear down the hallway, the light fading as he turned the corner. The silence was deafening but you did your best to ignore it, concentrating on your breathing to lower your heart rate. A cold chill settled over the room, your breath coming out in small puffs of air. Every few seconds, your ears would pick up faint sounds.

Metal jingling in the kitchen. The curtains rustling behind you. Floorboards creaking in the hallway. Footsteps above you in the attic.

Your eyes adjusted to the darkness but you still couldn’t see more than the faint outline of the furniture around you. Sweat rolled down your cheek as you looked around, wondering what was taking Jaemin so damn long. He knew where the breaker was.

Your head started to hurt and you closed your eyes as an image flashed through your mind. The box… it was the box from the store! The old man’s words echoed in your mind, ‘Lest misfortune befall you.’

You swallowed hard, trying to think rationally. ‘No, there’s no way this is the same thing. The box I found had no words on it, it was blank. My mind is just reacting to the stress of the situation, I need to calm down.’

Footsteps echoed in the hallway and you tensed up.

“It’s not the breaker,” Jaemin announced as he entered the living room. You noticed the lack of light coming from him. “My phone died right as I reached the box. The battery was full when I left school.” He headed over to the window, pulling back the curtains. Pale moonlight fell upon the room. “The whole block is dark, must be an outage.”

“What are the chances of a power outage happening tonight? And right after we started using the board,” you muttered, listening to Jaemin’s footsteps as he took his seat across from you.

“We should end the game.”

“But we can’t see it. How do we say goodbye?”

“The board is facing me,” he answered. “So the goodbye should be -” he placed his fingers on the planchette and guided it toward himself. “Goodbye.”

“Goodbye,” you repeated.

Both of you removed your fingers and packed up the board. You scooted over until your back was against the couch, keeping your ears alert for any unnatural sounds. Jaemin joined you a moment later, pulling the blanket down from the couch and wrapping it around the two of you. You snuggled into his side, enjoying the warmth and comfort he provided for you.

The power didn’t return until five am that morning. Neither of you had slept, too nervous after the events of that night, so when the power finally came back on, Jaemin went home and you headed to your room, both of you intent on getting some sleep. You quickly changed into your pajamas and slid under the large comforter.

Just as you closed your eyes, an ice-cold chill settled over the room. Had you left the window open? Cursing, you slowly sat up, pushing the comforter off of your body. Your eyes widened and a scream ripped from your throat.

Floating near the door was a young man, his body transparent and a teal flow covered him. A book floated in front of him, open to a random page. The scream made him look up, his eyes locked onto your own as he smirked.

“You didn’t say goodbye properly… Y/N.”

Reason behind the username: It used to be PirateQueenoftheCosmos, because I’m a scifi nerd, but when it changed to a kpop blog I wanted to have something about the boys in my name so I changed the last word to Bangtan. Tempted to include Monsta X in there somewhere but that’ll be for later.

Dream Job: Realistically, I’m working on becoming an Occupational Therapist who specializes in working with children on the Autism Spectrum which in itself is a dream job. But like way out there dream job? Makeup artist for idols. I love makeup and that would be incredible.
