Me *making Galactic Basic into an in-universe conlang created by the Republic Department of Linguistic Standards (DoLS) to impose Republic cultural domination in advance of Republic political and economic domination as a weapon against Hutt & other factions' potential control over systems, often with the effect of replacing and wiping out the indigenous languages of entire planets due to way it was created to be easy to learn for a wide variety of species and linguistic backgrounds*: sure yeah but this one is evil

Linguists: well…umm…uhh…you’re probably overestimating your ability to make a language that appeals to as wide a variety of first language speakers… Umm…and no language is—well—hmm…

Me: but also it's the only language the clones are taught growing up. Which is a tragedy among tragedies of course but they'll also adapt it and add new words and make a patchwork from other languages they hear on a thousand different planets and study during long hyperspace journeys, and they'll code switch to perfect "standard phonology" basic with certain people and most of their self-invented names are in Basic too because no one ever gave them names and nobody else actually names their kids in Basic because there are barely any names in Basic and this whole thing will be a form of Basic largely untouched by the Republic education systems beholden to the DoLS for funding

The locals' dialects are pretty interesting to begin with, and we're trying to get everyone accustomed to Galactic Basic, but youngling slang can be like a language all its own.

Took me a week of teaching before they explained that they weren't actually insulting me when I overheard them call me a "dink." It's some kind of rhyming slang thing thing: Since I like fiddling with machines, I'm a "tinkerer," and that gets shortened to "tink" which rhymes with "dink."

Language is kriffing wild, bruh.

Now, I just automatically assume any non-standard words they say are some kind of swear or curse. I don't punish them for it, or anything. I just think it's funnier that way.

Cinui - spices/flavorings

Cinui gets swapped out for cunii to avoid censors and law enforcement until eventually it takes on the semantic meaning of "drugs" for most speakers of Basic. At some point the meaning narrows to refer to one specific drug, in most contexts. This meaning spreads among essentially the entre Basic-speaking population of the galaxy due to expansive drug trade, and then even into Huttese and other languages as a loan word. Thus by the clone wars era, we get the near ubiquitous use of *spice = space cocaine*

My take on a likely explanation for why the lingua franca is called “Basic” or “Common”:

One culture makes an empire by the usual means of conquer etc. Their language becomes adopted as the language of the elites and of administration, law, commerce and culture, as tends to happen. Originally the language is called “Fictiolandish”. In time, it starts being known as “Common Fictiolandish” or “Basic Fictiolandish”, perhaps to distinguish the speech of the masses from those of the elites.

More time passes; maybe the original empire is gone; maybe the dialect of its elite class is gone with it. And eventually people shorten “Common Fictiolandish” into just “Common”.

It's always so disappointing when sci fi and fantasy books call their languages "Basic" or "Common". No language is apolitical or universal if they're all calling one language Basic, who made it that way? Why is THIS dialect "Common" and all the others are Special/Magical/Incomprehensible??? Show me even a hint of the politics, or give your language a real name

Stray final-episodes Syril/Heert thought: Heert leading the ISB troops to capture Kleya in the apartment block mirrors Syril leading the corpo troops to capture Cassian, especially with both being anxious deskriders who are good at investigative work but are not used to real action; who rely on the troops' squad leader to actually take charge on the ground; who seem to have their targets pinned down before getting disastrously outmanoeuvred; and both debacles spell doom (figuratively or literally) for both them and their superiors

Absolutely! I think that whole sequence in the finale was meant to parallel Syril's Ferrix operation.

It's interesting as well because Syril's fuck up leads to the downfall of Pre-Mor and Heert's fuck up is basically a death blow to the ISB's reputation.

Capricorn is the tenth sign of the zodiac. Capricorn is an earth sign. They exemplify this by being incredible down to earth, stoic, and purpose driven.
