Fiona Gallagher and Debbie Gallagher and their messed up relationship makes me so sick ☹️
They've got a 10 year age difference between them and we know that Monica left for the first time when Fiona was 9, Debbie unborn or still in the womb. That means since Debbie's birth, since even before it, Fiona knew she had to be the one to step up. She had to be the one to take care of everyone. Debbie NEVER got the Fiona that was purely sister, innocent and carefree (to an extent).
She's never going to have the Fiona that Lip and Ian had and she hates it because she's the next oldest. She's the line between 'Sister' Fiona and 'Mom' Fiona (even though Ian hovers on that too). And it's awful, because she was fine with how Fiona was when she was a child, when she didn't understand and all she wanted was someone to take care of her.
Then, as she grew up, she wanted a sister. Not a mom. Fiona barely even knew how to be a mom, considering she barely had one. Especially to a preteen girl. By the time she was that age, she had already been running an entire household. And Lip and Ian didn't have the same problems Debbie did. They didn't deal with periods and boys and school and friends the way Debbie did. Fiona couldn't be a mom to Debbie, but she had also stopped being a sister to her a long time ago.
All that hovering between her two roles, neither of them could manage it. So Debbie drifted to Mandy, and Fiona kept going however she could. Life went on, and their relationship got a little thinner.
Debbie's only actual role model on how to grow up and be a woman was Fiona, who had juggled boyfriends and children and work her entire life. Fiona who had grown up so fast, who'd been taken from her before she even had the chance to get to know her. She wanted to be a Fiona. She wanted to have someone too. So she started getting into boys, into babies. She got pregnant.
Fiona took the mom approach again, they fought. And then they fought again and again and again because neither of them understood each other and because neither of them could be what the other wanted. Fiona couldn't be the sister and Debbie couldn't be the daughter.
All of their trauma, shared and personal, deteriorated their relationship, distorted it, until it was barely recognisable anymore.
When they both grew up a little bit more, when what's done was done and there was nothing to be done about it anymore, they got a little better. Not perfect, not how it used to be, but better. Slightly.
By then, their problem wasn't that Debbie was growing up too fast and Fiona couldn't keep up. It was that Debbie was refusing to grow anymore (understandable to an extent, considering she was a minor) and Fiona wanted her to step up (also understandable to an extent, considering Debbie made the choice to have a child despite everyone saying otherwise- for whatever reasons she did it). To contribute to the house so that even Fiona could build her own life.
They knew that they would be there for each other in those rock bottom moments when life was a 0. But life isn't all 0s, and they couldn't build a relationship in anything above that. THEY LOVED EACH OTHER SO MUCH. But they both fucked up with each other on multiple occasions. 😭 It was neither of their faults, and Debbie Gallagher is not the awful witch everyone claims she is (though she has done many questionable things).
That's the end of my little relationship analysis 🤗🤗 Please tell me what you think of them and how you see them 🙏🙏

there's something that really gets to my heart about both Debbie and Svetlana naming their kids after their shitty abusive fathers because "they had good qualities too" and still actively working to be better parents than they had as children but there's still a part of them that are those scared little girls who just wanted their dad to love them and protect them but they got let down over and over again and yET they still honor those shitty fathers and who they could have been with their children's names 😭

people love saying Ian/Mickey would kill you for talking shit about the other. But similarly, any of the Gallagher’s would kill you for talking shit about one of their siblings. It’s big “I’m the only one allowed to hurt them” energy. Like you can hate Fiona all you want but at you gotta know that Debbie “hung Fiona’s ex boyfriend from a sign naked in the middle of street” Gallagher would kill for her sister no matter how much Fiona pissed her off

Tbh the writers having Ian say Lip was the “closest thing to a father they had” in the finale was weird to me because I never once saw their relationship like that? Like, obviously I could definitely see Debbie, Carl and Liam potentially feeling that way about Lip at points but Ian???? They’re only a couple years apart at most. And to me their relationship was always portrayed purely as best friends/brothers.

do you think we were supposed to take ian’s comment about hating debbie seriously? cause it just seemed like him being an annoying sibling but i’ve seen people scold him on twitter. I just think it’s weird that almost everyone else that szn was being aggressive or fighting with her but it’s ian that gets singled out and criticised again. I hate when people pit them against eo cause they are my favourites 🥲
no, i didn’t. and i’ve said this before. it wasn’t ian’s words THERE i took seriously, it was the intent john wells had, and the fact that it was a common pattern in s11 to have her be the punchline of every joke when before, it was nothing like that.

Fiona, Debbie, mandy, molly edit <3 shameless sisters
We definitely should have got more of mandy being a big sister because she's great at it. Fiona and mandy have way more in common than I think they realise. ALSO was gonna do some other scenes but all the scene packs were so bad 😭

Sometimes im just sitting around and then suddenly I get so sentimental about the opening scene of s4e1. It’s Fiona and Debbie using the upstairs bathroom at the same time, preparing for the day and getting glammed up. It’s them elbowing their way for the mirror. Teeth. Hair. Mascara. Cut to them in their own rooms. A split screen, trying out clothes, finding their own style, debbie wears fiona’s boots… it hammers down the similarities and dichotomy between them, setting the tone of their dynamic for the rest of the season as that teen angst slowly rears its ugly head.
And i love it. It’s a sweet reminder that they are sisters. We’ve spent seasons 1-3 of fiona baby-ing debbie and acting like a mother figure, and it’s easy to believe because debbie was so small. Although fiona still does act like a mom, it was at this point that emphasizes that debbie is a teen now, that she’s the small sister and fiona is the big sis. She’s a teen now, which fiona once was. There are two girls in the household and it’s them. There is an element of girlhood, past the shared traumas and abandonment issues, the bittersweet truth of growing up and getting to witness someone go through the things you did.

there’s nothing like the terribly specific hurt of growing up always trying to protect your little sibling from your parents, always shielding them and watching them like a hawk and teaching them not to be too loud or too argumentative or too in the way, only to watch your parents get better for them. not perfect, no, but better.
because it means that they always had the capability to be good. they always had the ability to be mature and kind and raise their children with love and easy affection and laughter instead of raised fists and sharp nails and terrible words. they were always capable of change. they just didn’t want to do it for you.
and you don’t want to be jealous because that’s your little baby sister, who you love, who you grew up protecting, who matters more to you than anyone on the planet, but you are. you’re jealous and it’s eating you up inside and you’re so sick with guilt but you can’t help it; you wanted the mom who loves you even when you mess up instead of slapping you across the face. you wanted the dad that makes weekend afternoons fun instead of getting drunk and weepy about his life to you like you’re a therapist. you wanted the parents you could trust to love you no matter what.
why does she get those parents and not you? why didn’t you deserve that mom and dad? why weren’t you enough for them to want to change? what did you do wrong?
