Oregon governor Tina Kotek yesterday signed the state's Right to Repair Act, which will push manufacturers to provide more repair options for their products than any other state so far.
The law, like those passed in New York, California, and Minnesota, will require many manufacturers to provide the same parts, tools, and documentation to individuals and repair shops that they provide to their own repair teams.
But Oregon's bill goes further, preventing companies from implementing schemes that require parts to be verified through encrypted software checks before they will function, known as parts pairing or serialization. Oregon’s bill, SB 1596, is the first in the nation to target that practice. Oregon state senator Janeen Sollman and representative Courtney Neron, both Democrats, sponsored and pushed the bill in the state senate and legislature.
“By eliminating manufacturer restrictions, the Right to Repair will make it easier for Oregonians to keep their personal electronics running,” said Charlie Fisher, director of Oregon's chapter of the Public Interest Research Group, in a statement. “That will conserve precious natural resources and prevent waste. It’s a refreshing alternative to a ‘throwaway’ system that treats everything as disposable.”
Oregon's law isn't stronger in every regard. For one, there is no set number of years for a manufacturer to support a device with repair support. Parts pairing is prohibited only on devices sold in 2025 and later. And there are carve-outs for certain kinds of electronics and devices, including video game consoles, medical devices, HVAC systems, motor vehicles, and—as with other states—“electric toothbrushes.”
Apple opposed the Oregon repair bill for its parts-pairing ban. John Perry, a senior manager for secure design at Apple, testified at a February hearing in Oregon that the pairing restriction would “undermine the security, safety, and privacy of Oregonians by forcing device manufacturers to allow the use of parts of unknown origin in consumer devices.”
Apple surprised many observers with its support for California's repair bill in 2023, though it did so after pressing for repair providers to mention when they use “non-genuine or used” components and to bar repair providers from disabling security features.
According to Consumer Reports, which lobbied and testified in support of Oregon's bill, the repair laws passed in four states now cover nearly 70 million people.

Hooray for piracy!
The only way gaming in the third world can be remotely accessible.
You know they used to sell modded games as well here along with the pirated copies of real games?
Back in the days of the gameboy color, I had this gameboy game called Harry Boy - Sail Like a Bomb. It was a strange terf wizard bootleg where the game inside wasn't actually based on any HP title on gameboy, but was instead a strange Mario-like platformer where Mario got replaced by a custom sprite of Harry. Boy. With Bomb powers.
I can't remember anything else about it but I didn't even think about how weird that was until years and years later.
I also bought this heavily modded version of Red Alert 2 called Red Alert: Rizfire. It had extremely strange units, like suicide bomber dogs that had nukes attached to them (thus allowing a tiny squad of dogs to decimate armies AND irradiate the ground making it unpassable) or an upgraded Crazy Ivan (i forgot what they named him) who could throw dynamite rather than just plant them on things.
It's kind of wild to look back and think about how those days were also the years right after 9/11. Islamophobia was at an extreme high, but the best stalls in Manila with pirated games, jailbreak services, or even full console (and cellphone, you had to be diverse) repairs were often run by women in hijabs. Not only did they have to deal with hiding and moving stalls constantly to avoid getting caught by police raids, but they had to deal with cops randomly coming in to harass them because they were Muslim and not because of all the illegal bootlegs they had all over their shops.
Anyway I'm grateful to them. Video games would have been completely unaffordable without their bootlegs, plus the secondhand PS2 I bought from one of these stalls had the stall-owner open it up, take it apart, put it back together, then told me it would last a good 10 years after she was done fixing it. It lived for 12 before I sold it off and it was still working then. Incredible work.

With Love For Dragon Age
When I say Dragon Age saved my life, I'm not exaggerating. It's not hyperbole. It's 100% factual. When I was at my lowest, I made a list in my head of things I would not be able to enjoy if I ended my life. This game was number one.
I won't be able to play the next Dragon Age game.
I won't be able to feel my husband's hugs.
I won't be able to hear my cat purring.
That was the order ever single time.
I haven't felt that way for about...four years now. When I got sick with covid in 2022, Dragon Age gave me more motivation to fight the disease (bed rest, lots of soup, neti pot, pneumonia breathing exercises), and I know it helped.
Between the three games, I have around 40k hours (or 4.56 years) of game time invested in it. I have all the books and graphic novels, the tarot deck, and more. This game is on a short list of things I'm well and truly passionate about.
Unfortunately, it looks like I won't be able to play until next year. Why?
Pay off Cacoa's vet bill from earlier this year - 50% there
Pay off at least half of another debt - $1619.20 left to pay on it right now, and it starts collecting interest in spring 2025.
Purchase a game console - XBox Series X, $500 - I have an XBox One, and it can't play this game.
Purchase the game - around $70, and I'm not pre-ordering.
With your assistance, I can reach those goals. Selling two of my original paintings would take care of both the first and second goals. I have quilt listings starting at $20. There's also the option to commission me for a quilt, become a monthly supporter, or make a donation. I'm rather fond of having space for making new things, and my space is very limited, and the shop has many listings with more added almost every week right now, when I'm not working on commissions.
If I'm able to play this year, I will be ecstatic. Ideally, playing as part of my celebration for have less debt. We have another debt to pay off after this, but it's collecting no interest. Selling everything in my shop, however, would pay off everything on this list, plus that debt, and enough left to make home repairs (like replacing the plumbing).
If I reach goals one and two, totaling nearly $2k with the two combined, by October 1st, I'm having a massive giveaway. One when I reach my current goal, one when I reach the next one, and as celebration for reaching both by October 1st, a third giveaway.
Listen, my love for Dragon Age runs deep as the marrow in my bones. It was one of the very things that kept me from ending my life during the darker times of my life. I will be genuinely upset if I'm unable to play when the game is released, but I will be happy just to be able to play this year. My love for Dragon Age is incentive enough to offer free quilts.

California became just the third state in the nation to pass a "right to repair" consumer protection law on Tuesday, following Minnesota and New York, when Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 244. The California Right to Repair bill had originally been introduced in 2019. It passed, nearly unanimously, through the state legislature in September.
“This is a victory for consumers and the planet, and it just makes sense,” Jenn Engstrom, state director of CALPIRG, told iFixit(which was also one of SB244's co-sponsors). “Right now, we mine the planet’s precious minerals, use them to make amazing phones and other electronics, ship these products across the world, and then toss them away after just a few years’ use ... We should make stuff that lasts and be able to fix our stuff when it breaks, and now thanks to years of advocacy, Californians will finally be able to, with the Right to Repair.”
Turns out Google isn't offering seven years of replacement parts and software updates to the Pixel 8 out of the goodness of its un-beating corporate heart. The new law directly stipulates that all electronics and appliances costing $50 or more, and sold within the state after July 1, 2021 (yup, two years ago), will be covered under the legislation once it goes into effect next year, on July 1, 2024. For gear and gadgets that cost between $50 and $99, device makers will have to stock replacement parts and tools, and maintain documentation for three years. Anything over $100 in value gets covered for the full seven-year term. Companies that fail to do so will be fined $1,000 per day on the first violation, $2,000 a day for the second and $5,000 per day per violation thereafter.
There are, of course, carve outs and exceptions to the rules. No, your PS5 is not covered. Not even that new skinny one. None of the game consoles are, neither are alarm systems or heavy industrial equipment that "vitally affects the general economy of the state, the public interest, and the public welfare."
“I’m thrilled that the Governor has signed the Right to Repair Act into law," State Senator Susan Talamantes Eggman, one of the bill's co-sponsors, said. "As I’ve said all along, I’m so grateful to the advocates fueling this movement with us for the past six years, and the manufacturers that have come along to support Californians’ Right to Repair. This is a common sense bill that will help small repair shops, give choice to consumers, and protect the environment.”
The bill even received support from Apple, of all companies. The tech giant famous for its "walled garden" product ecosystem had railed against the idea when it was previously proposed in Nebraska, claiming the state would become "a mecca for hackers." However, the company changed its tune when SB 244 was being debated, writing a letter of support reportedly stating, "We support 'SB 244' because it includes requirements that protect individual users' safety and security as well as product manufacturers' intellectual property."

Glitchy Rorke au part 2
.. they took the disk out; it was steaming hot and overheated the consol, this is why you don't buy cheap games from eBay.
they attempted to contact the seller a day after, they let them know the issue and all they responded with was
":) maybe you're playing it wrong"
and then they blocked them
sigh, looks like they're stuck with this game that doesn't work, probably a creepypasta or a pirate, and the seller won't cooperate. Google has nothing because nothing pops up when you put in "Call of Duty Ghosts glitch" nothing besides hacks and stuff for multiplayer.
they decide to clean off the disk with premium cd cleaner you found in a cabinet, Afterall, maybe the old owner just used it so much it started to scratch the disk and break the game.
they throw the clean disk back into the console, if this doesn't work it might be something wrong in the console and should take it to a repair shop. After throwing the game back in, it doesn't start back on the title screen with all the options, it starts in the middle of the campaign, but it's not glitchy anymore!
until the characters just stopped moving, they weren't even at a cut scene
it started to glitch out again, Rorke specifically, his character model started to move weirdly, and the sound was gone, the other characters stayed still but they weren't glitching, Rorke had rgb effects around him as the character model twitched and freaked out. The game was broken.
while walking over to take the disk out of the console, the character... started banging on the screen, the glass starting to crack as the player backed up quick, to stunned to take the disk out. IT had gained consciousness and wanted out, its hand busted through the screen, glass shattered as the glitchy hand desperately tried to latch onto something, the player quickly lunged toward the consol, desperately trying to unplug the thing form the wall as the hand kept trying to grab onto something. anything. It wanted out.
after a minute (that felt like 30) the consol was unplugged and the arm faded back into black pixels. the broken tv's glass was on the floor and tv stand, the innards of the tv could also be seen, there was a large hole through the whole tv... the tv was soon also unplugged.
after that the player was too scared to go back online for the day.
The next day around 12:49 player decided to open up their laptop, it took longer to turn on than usual. When the computer was turned on the player could have sworn there was fist flying at them through the screen, it made the player jump back and pupils dilate... what the fuck... after catching their breath they unlocked the computer, almost puking when the background was replaced with Rorke. It was the photo of him staring at the player at the end of the game, eyes boring into the soul of the player, but there was something off... his eyes were bloodshot and tired. After blinking a few times, it went back to the normal photo, a picture of the player's cat. After forgetting about what they were going to do online they shut the laptop and put it in a drawer... rushing to the bathroom to splash ice water on their face... it has to be fake... this has to be fake... it's a virus... or something!!!
The player jumped nearly jumped out of their skin when they got a call... the phone was taken from the pocket... it was an unknown number, but the background of the call was glitchy... the player let out a frustrated scream this fucking thing was taking over their life... the player answered
"WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS...?!?" the voice was paranoid, frustrated, and nervous. there was no answer just 3 beeps and then the thing on the other side hung up...
the player is paranoid. They started getting notification's, a lot of them.
one from Messanger
2 from Snapchat
1 from Instagram
1 from Tumblr
2 from Discord
1 from Virus protection.
As the players phone blew up, they shut it off in fear, every notification and vibrate like stab to the gut. It was unbearable. the phone turned back on, the screen glitchy and cracking just a bit. The player, with tear filled eyes picked up the phone and looked at the notifications.
1 new message
Gabriel has added you as a friend. Say hi!
Gabriel sent you a message
1 new notification from Tumblr
2 new messages on Discord
New virus detected!
threat level: dangerous
The player sniffled and opened Messenger.
there wasn't any text, but an image... an image of the same photo of Rorke with the bloodshot, tired eyes.
then the player opened Snapchat...
the same image.
the Bitmoji in the right corner of the screen was glitching out.
player had a new massage on Tumblr...
the same image just more glitchy.
Discord wouldn't open, it kept crashing.
Virus protection was glitching out and crashed as well as the player tried to protect their phone.
after it closed all the apps were deleting themselves, the icons were glitchy and shaky. The background had set itself to the photo of Rorke.
FUCK
the player quickly put the phone in their pocket and ran back to their room. Slamming the door and throwing open the draw the computer was in making it slide forward slightly. There had to be a way to fix this
Player unlocked the computer all of the applications and files were gone except for one.
Gabriel.exc
Virus protection was the only notification received before that got silenced and deleted to. The player let out a choked sob as they opened the file. It needed to be deleted. The same photo, its eyes still bloodshot, tired. The image was burning itself into the players mind, every little pixel. After exiting the file, the wallpaper had also set itself as the image. Player is going insane.
It needs to be taken to a device repair store.
-------~--------~----------~---------~--------~---------~----------~------

“Being Best-friends with Dante Sparda„
Being a son of Sparda doesn’t mean he doesn’t have time to fool around with you ! Gender neutral human reader
Teenage Years | DMC3
Being the massive flirt he is he’ll most likely try and flirt with you upon meeting
Seeing as his twin brother is currently trying to kill him and take his necklace he’ll keep your first conversation short and leave you with his number
After literal Hell on Earth he’ll remember to give you a call
Y’all click instantly…he’s also just a really easy person to get along with but we’ll just ignore that
Now we all know he STAYS broke so either you pay for a meal or y’all are taking a walk in the park somewhere
Getting him to actually talk about himself is pretty difficult
Give him space and he’ll open up about deeper things in his life eventually especially things that concern his demon half(brother, childhood, etc.)
He does enjoy throwing compliments everywhere so expect daily words of praise whether it be sarcastic, goofy, exaggerated, or sincere praise
If you like to compliment as well it’ll be like the most sickening bromance ever
If your still in school DO NOT go to him for homework help
He’ll hype you up for sure but if you need genuine academic help just get a tutor💀
Would be genuinely upset if you made a joke regarding his white hair bro would get hella moody and claim you aren’t friends anymore
If you have a part time job you can BET he’s gonna ask for some bread
Not exactly outright but he’ll allude to it like..
“You remember all the damage those demon guys did to my shop? Yeah…it’s gonna cost A TON to repair it by myself…”
“Are you hungry? Well I heard about this new pizza spot that WE should totally tryout 😁.”
If you like to make clothes/jewelry/accessories he’ll totally wear it
Refuses to let you mess with his hair until like two years into knowing each other
Takes pride in his looks and you should too! Self care! Ofc you’re paying for any and all expenses🫶
Glorified sugar daddy😭
If you live with your parents…so does he
Congratulations you have a new brother 🩰
If you don’t he’ll offer to be roommates so he can get a cheaper rent
You’ll definitely meet Lady she is absolutely appalled at how you tolerate him constantly sarcastically ofc she knows he’s a good guy
If you’re into video games he’ll play with you granted he doesn’t have the money to pay for a game console so it’ll be on whatever console you have
Once he’s in your life he’s never leaving literally.
A best-friend for a lifetime
Adult Years
He probably saved you from some demons
Like if you met him in his teenage year he’d def start flirting
What can I say he stays true to himself
His personality would never change regardless of his aging
Still the same wacky woohoo pizza man we know and love
Thinks you look hot and invites you on a date which quickly just turns into a hangout after the LACK of romance
Still finds hanging with you to be fun and keeps a friendship
Even after establishing a friendship he still flirts here and there—force of habit
Would definitely teach you how to ride a motorcycle if you didn’t already know
More willing to let you mess with his hair
Like put it in pigtails or tie it up/braid it
Introduced you to the whole DMC gang
Now depending on the time period he’ll tell you about Vergil and his upbringing
He would totally tell you all about it after the events of DMC5 after he returns ofc!
I feel like he’s an animal guy so if you have any pets they’re now his pets too
Co-parenting core🩰
If you’re an artist he’ll be your muse/reference material any day
Loves the attention
Drunk dance nights
Karaoke too he doesn’t have the best singing voice but it’s not the worst
Since he’s a devil hunter he goes on missions a lot and seeing as you don’t want to get your shit rocked you stay behind
Cherishes every moment spent together and will make sure you know that
You always take him with you on vacations
How could you not???
He appreciates if you chip in helping him pay off his MASSIVE FUCKING DEBT
He doesn’t expect you to though
Despite being broke he stays stylish and if you asked would help you with fashion
Ofc he isn’t like BIG on fashion but cmon have you seen his looks? He dabbles
Immediately sees you after missions and starts ranting about the entire thing
“Can you believe it?! So obviously I shot that nasty bitch and it had the nerve to explode all over my jacket! It died so I can’t even get it to pay for a new one!”
“Don’t worry about why I smell like this worry about the fact that Trish totally took MY commission!”
Very dramatic but laid back too if that makes sense
Calls you cheesy nicknames that I will not elaborate on use your imagination 🗣️🫶
Enjoys live music and will go with you to concerts if you like
Shows you his demon form if you’re interested
Whatever your hobby is he’ll be interested
Would make sure nothing ever bad happened to you regarding devils ofc
Best bros for life and in death🫡

Syrup
From an anon request - thanks anon! :) Pairings: Rei x reader Fluffy fluff
You’re sat up on the counter, cross-legged, staring up at the television screen suspended from the ceiling, mashing X as if that would make a difference. It’s a slow afternoon in your workplace of four years – Mr Kyoshi’s Joypad – a shop purely dedicated to video games and consoles. It’s a great place to work, combining your love of video games and recently you’d entered into repairs as a side hobby. In quieter periods, Mr Kyoshi had no issues with you passing the time by gaming yourself, as long as you still attended to the customers, of course. There were sample consoles dotted around the place with recent demos installed, but the one above the counter is where you’d mainly play to show off the most recent games.
The bell dings as you reach a critical part of the fight. If you pause, you’re going to lose momentum and you always die at this point. “Welcome to Kyoshi’s Joypad where we cater to all your gaming needs!” You say almost robotically, before adding, “I’ll be with you in just a second…”
You mash X again, hoping maybe you’ll get another attack in before the boss’ big attack but it’s not to be – your character’s HP drops down to 0 and the screen displays game over.
“Ugh!” You put down the controller and hop off the counter, before spinning round. “Sorry about that, I’ve been trying to beat him since yesterday…” You trail off at the sight of the man before you. He’s tall and lean, shaggy black hair and he looks like he didn’t sleep the night before, but you’d be lying to yourself if you didn’t admit he was attractive. He’s dressed in tight black jeans and has a blue hoodie zipped up, with a tote bag in hand.
You realise you’ve trailed off and you’re just staring at each other, so you laugh before starting over. “Er, hi! What can I do for you?” You smile, warmly. You’ve had your experience with a lot of socially awkward boys and men in your time working here – some more painful than others – so you’re aware when you might need to lead the conversation some more.
“You need to buff up your defence with iron heart when he powers up.”
“Huh?”
He points to the screen behind you.
“Oh! I’m so bad at remembering that’s a thing, you know? I just like to hit everyone with the big sword.” You scratch the back of your head – a habit when you’re nervous – and grin. “But thanks! I’ll try that next time – I’ve been stuck at this bit for ages.”
He nods and then there’s another pause.
“So, er, can I help you with anything in particular, or did you just want to browse, or…?” You could ramble enough for two.
He puts down the tote on the counter, hesitating before retrieving the contents. “I read online that you do repairs?”
“Yeah! Of course, this voids any warranty on the product, so if it’s still in that period we’d always advise going to the manufacturer first.”
“Mm. No, they’re out of warranty.” He pulls out two controllers. One looks crusted with a questionable substance and the other seems fine, albeit worn.
“Lemme guess – drift?” You point at the battered one.
“Yep.”
It’s a known problem with these controllers – just the amount of use over time wears them out and as a consequence your accuracy takes a hit as the joystick takes on a life of its own. It’s annoying for first person shooter games, as well as racing games – both genres you suspect this guy is into.
“And, er, what happened to this one?” You point, not quite daring to touch it yet until the mystery substance is identified.
“My daughter gave it a bath in syrup.”
“Ah.” You nod, and poke at it cautiously and find it to be horrendously sticky. The thought crosses your mind that this man looks a little young to have a daughter and there’s no wedding ring… You mentally smack yourself for prejudices.
“The other one has been drifting for a while, so I was mainly using this one until…” He shrugs.
“So, I can definitely fix this one for you.” You tap on the drifter. “Syrup one… Well, I can give it a go but I can’t make any guarantees on its survival.”
“That’s fine.”
You grab a repair form from under the counter and note down the make, model and status of the controllers. “I can do the both for 10,000 yen, if that sounds okay?”
The man nods. “Sure. How long will it take?”
“So, I do all the repair work from home where I have the proper set-up as there wasn’t any room in the store.” Mr Kyoshi was not an organized man – he loved retro games and consoles and the back room was overflowing with boxes. It wasn’t good to perform any repairs back there with all the dust, so you’d set up a dedicated space in your bedroom. “I can usually get the drift fixed in an evening, but I think I’ll need some extra time on the syrup, so it might end up being Friday. I’m probably going to have to use a combination of things to see what works”
He frowns at the mention of Friday – probably the only controllers he owns.
“However, since we don’t want you to be without…” You crouch down below the counter and retrieve a controller from the box you keep back there for such occasions. “You can borrow this. It’s one I’ve refurbished for the shop and you can tell it’s seen a lot, but it still works great.” You slide it over to him. “And you can just bring it back when you come to collect yours.”
“Thanks.” He feels it in his hands. “Could tell I can’t wait that long, huh?”
“Hm, well, I know there’s a Morio Kart online championship coming up and that a lot of people are practicing… I might be way off here, though.”
A smile creeps up on the man’s face. “Hm. Maybe.”
You slide over the form with a pen and tap at the bottom. “Haven’t lost my touch! So, if you want to just write your name and phone number down there for me.” You grab a zip-lock bag to stick the sticky controller in – you don’t want to put that in your backpack.
“My phone number?” His face looks quizzical.
“Yeah…” You smile. “You know, so I can let you know when to pick it up?”
“Ah.” He scribbles down the two bits of information quickly.
“Great! Is there anything else I can help you with today?” He shakes his head as he puts the loaned controller in the tote bag. “Okay, have a good day.” You grin as he heads towards the door.
“Good luck,” he nods up towards the ‘game over’ screen.
--
Through extensive research (aka browsing numerous forums and checking videos), by late Thursday night you’d got the syrupy controller back to its best. It was a bit of trial and error with rubbing alcohol, a tiny toothbrush and a scraper to try and dislodge the sticky residue from every nook and cranny - the payment was probably not worth the amount of time you’d spent on the thing but you were a sucker for a cute guy. The other controller was an easy enough fix at least, one you’d done a number of times already for other clients.
You were covering the 12-8 shift in the shop on Friday – Mr Kyoshi liked to keep it open a little later ahead of the weekends, so as soon as you got in you dug out the form and rang the number the customer – one Rei Suwa – had left you.
It rang for a little too long and you were now expecting it to go to voicemail when suddenly the ringing stopped.
“Hi.” A curt greeting.
“Hi!” You answered cheerfully. “It’s Kyoshi’s Joypad here…”
A loud bang cuts you off. It sounded like a gunshot in the background. He must have one hell of a surround sound system.
“Yeah?”
“So, good news! Both the controllers are working, so if you wanna drop by…”
“What the hell, Rei?! Are you seriously on the phone right now?!” A voice screeches, before there’s another burst of gunfire. “Get to cover!”
You roll your eyes – you must’ve disturbed a Call Of Duty session with his buds.
“Thanks. I’ll be there later on today.”
“Dude!” The other voice hisses.
“Okay, bye.” But the dial tones tells you he’s already hung up. You place the phone back on the receiver, before and putting the fixed controllers underneath the desk along with the form to be collected later and get on with your shift.
--
It’s half three and you’ve been kept pretty busy. You’re sat behind the counter, finishing off the last of the stock audit when the bell rings again and you look up with your automatic greeting.
“Welcome to Kyoshi’s Joypad where we… Whoa.” You wished you hadn’t said that last part out loud.
The man standing the other side of the counter from you is in an incredibly well-fitted suit, waistcoat and red tie. His dark-hair is tied up on top of his head, revealing an undercut. His face seems similar but you can’t quite place it.
You manage to stop yourself gawking. “I mean, whoa-t can I help you with today?” You know as soon as it comes out of your mouth that it was not the smoothest save and the slight smile on the man’s face just seems to confirm it.
“I’m here to pick up the controllers…” He mumbles, and then you put two and two together. This is the same guy from the other day?! You found him attractive then, sure, but this look… Ooft.
“Oh, Rei! I’m so sorry, the suit threw me off.”
“You don’t like it?” He looks down at the fit with a frown.
“No, no! I just… It’s not what the average clientele wears in here, so I just didn’t put the two and two together. It looks good, really good…”
“I had a meeting.” That doesn’t really blend with what you heard on the phone earlier, but maybe that was a lunchbreak thing? You shouldn’t judge, you spend a good deal of your working day gaming and get away with it.
“Oh, cool. What do you do for work? I mean, you know I work here, so…”
“I guess you could say I clean up the city.”
“Ah…” You nod as if you get what he means, but you don’t. There’s an awkward silence and then you remember what he came in for. “Right, your controllers!” You bend down and retrieve them – they’re in a paper bag with the shop’s logo on. You slide the bag across the counter. “Should be as good as new.”
“Wow,” he peeks in the bag and retrieves one, then the other, looking closely. “I can’t even tell which one was the syrupy one.”
“Thanks!” You smiled. “I was pretty pleased with how it turned out too. I’ve tested them both out with a couple of games, but if something doesn’t seem right just bring them back and I’ll take a look, free of charge, of course. I like happy customers.”
“Thank you.” He retrieves the store’s controller from his suit pocket – you’re not sure how it fit in there. “And this is yours. I kept Miri away from it to make sure it didn’t come back in syrup.”
“Miri - is that your daughter’s name?” He nods. “That’s cute. How old is she?”
“Four.”
“She must be a handful.”
“Mm.” There’s a pause. “Did you beat the boss from the other day?”
“I did – thank you. Your tip did the trick. I promise I’ll remember about my status boosts from now on, or at least try.”
Someone stands behind Rei with a game in hand, ready to check out. You want to keep the conversation going, but Mr Kyoshi doesn’t pay you to flirt with handsome men – though he does bemoan why a nice young lady such as yourself is single…
Rei notices the person too. “How much do I owe you again?”
“Oh, yeah. 10,000 yen, please.” You enter the amount into the register as he passes over his card and you slide it through the machine. “Thank you. Here’s your receipt. Hope to see you again soon!”
“Thanks. Me too.” He picks up the paper bag and gives you a small wave as he leaves.
--
It’s Monday when you’re next back in the shop. The morning is very quiet and after you’ve taken the usual deliveries, you’re sat back upon the counter playing another quest when the bell rings. You immediately pause and slide off the counter, ready to greet the customer. “Welcome to… Oh, Rei. Hi!” You smile and he smiles back almost sheepishly. He’s in casual attire today and has a bag in his hand.
“Morning.”
“How can I help you today?”
“Er, I’m afraid Miri had another accident.” He places the bag on the counter and you peek inside. It’s soaked in syrup again.
“What – how?!” Your eyes widen at the sight of it.
“Blame Kazuki, he’s always giving her pancakes…”
“Kazuki, huh?” You try and ask casually.
“Yeah, my room-mate. We, er, co-parent. It’s a long story. Can you salvage it?”
“I think so. Leave it with me. It might be another two-day job, if that’s okay? I can lend you a controller again if you need two…” You grab another form and jot down the details.
“Thanks, but I wouldn’t want her to drench yours either. She can just watch me.”
“It’s sweet that you guys play together.” You smile. “Can you write your number down again for me?” You’ve already filled in his name.
“Sure.” He notes it down. “How are you getting on?” He points up to the screen.
“Mm, better! It’s my own fault – I’ll admit I like playing for the storyline more than the combos.”
“No, I can understand that.” His phone chimes with an alarm from his pocket. “Ah, sorry. I need to head. You’ll ring when it’s ready?”
“Mm-hm. Speak soon.” You watch him leave, disappointed the conversation was so short today. You let out a sigh and hop back up onto the counter, resuming your game.
--
You call Rei Wednesday morning after you’ve successfully eliminated all traces of syrup again – this time it’s quiet in the background on his side. He says he’ll be by in the afternoon and, true to his word, he appears with a little girl holding his hand.
“Hi, Rei!” You smile brightly as he heads over to the counter. Miri, you presume, is bouncing on her heels and looking around the shop in wonder, squealing as she recognizes different video game characters.
You bend down and retrieve Rei’s controller, placing it on the counter before leaning over it and grin down at Miri.
“So, syrup bandit, we meet at last, huh?”
Miri grins back up at you. “Oh, you’re the pretty lady that fixes them!” Rei’s face flushes red and he stutters, but you can’t help but find it adorable. Miri’s attention span drifts and lands on the Morio Kart display demo to the side. “Do you get to play all these games all day?!”
“I sure do! Sadly, I have to let the customers have a go too otherwise my boss gets kinda mad.” You wink. “Speaking of which, you can play Morio Kart if you like.”
“Oh, can I? Can I, Papa Rei?” She tugs at Rei’s arm again with a pleading look.
“Sorry, Miri. Papa Kazuki said we needed to be back by 4 today. How about we swing by another time, and we can play when we get home, okay?”
“Okay, Papa Rei.” She nods, though her eyes stare longingly at the demo machine.
“How much do I owe you today?”
“5,000, please.” He slides over cash this time and you ring it through the register.
“Now, young lady, please can you promise me not to cover this in syrup again?”
She frowns. “But Papa Rei told me to do it so he could come see you again!” Rei looks like he wants the ground to swallow him up in that moment.
“Oh, did he?” You laugh, feeling your own cheeks flush. “Well, here’s your receipt and…” You grab a pen and write along the bottom. “..my gamer tag.”
He nods his head frantically, grabs the receipt, the controller and Miri and speedwalks to the door. “Thank you! Bye.”
“Bye, pretty lady!” Miri beams and Rei yanks her out of there.
--
When you get home later that night, you make a quick dinner before collapsing on your bed as you boot up your games console. You logged into the network, and a notification beeped. One new request from ReiSuwa1.
You hit accept and see he’s still online, playing the game you’d struggled on the other day. Coincidence or deliberate, you muse. A few minutes later, another notification comes up. ReiSuwa1 is inviting you to voice chat.
Your stomach flips as you grab your headset and put it on, before hitting accept.
There’s a beep to show you’ve been connected.
“Don’t tell me there’s been another syrup incident.”
A chuckle fills your ears.

Bit of an awkward situation I need some advice for: my ASURA copilot suffered what my readouts are telling me is a sudden cascade after we were exposed to a jury-rigged blinkspace device mid-sortie. The only problem is, I was engaged in fullsync at the time, and… ASURA doesn’t seem to BE anywhere in our Everest’s systems. What’s more, all sensors read as normal and yet everything’s slowed to molasses to my own senses. Are there any specialists I can page? Because I’m really not sure how safe it would be to disconnect and leave the cockpit right now.
Find the communication line to the nearest Horizon Collective Repair shop. They will connect you with a team of specialists and set up an action plan with instructions for you. You might have to stay plugged in for a while but if it is any consolation, this kind of situation is not as unusual as you might think it is.
My recommendation is that you use the moment to get some high scores on some video games while you're in speed mode.

Masterlist M's Hundred Celly
Mickey hadn’t necessarily thought that middle school crushes would be something he’d struggle with as an adult. But the second he stepped foot into the Nerds United store and laid eyes on you it was all over for him. You were talking to a teenage girl about the differences in dice and what games they each worked best with.
You answered all the questions that she had with ease and a beaming smile on your face. He had hoped that you would be done with the girl quickly so that you could help him find a new game he was wanting to buy. He had been to at least 5 different shops before coming to yours as his last hope. But instead a lanky looking fellow came out between the shelves and had assisted him instead.
After he left the store he was determined to see you more. So that’s how he found himself not even 2 days later walking back into the store laptop in hand. The perk of your store was that it was an all nerds kind of thing. There were dice, trading cards, video games, consoles, funko pops, movies, dvd’s, merch from different fandoms and also repairs available for laptops and other gaming devices.
He hadn’t used the laptop in a long while but figured getting it repaired was the perfect excuse to see you.
But much to his disappointment you were nowhere to be found. The hope of seeing you slowly died out. The same lanky fellow came to the counter to help him again, this time he learned his name was Jeremy and that while you were co owners of the store, he was actually the computer expert so it was a good thing he was there as you would’ve been clueless.
He hadn’t found another reason to go to the store while his laptop was being fixed so he had just the first time he saw you to help get him through. He thought back to the ripped jeans, supernatural shirt and vans you had been wearing, a red and black flannel wrapped around your waist. He thought about the way your eyes crinkled at the sides when you smiled at the girl you were helping. The way you became so animated as you showed the girl a specific onyx set you had claimed to be your favorite.
A week later he got a notification that his laptop was ready. He was all but rushing out of the base to get to the shop. He had knocked into Phoenix in his haste to get out which earned him a questioning look from the brunette. He was desperate to get another glimpse of you. With his luck the last time he came in he wasn’t expecting to see you this time. But as he walked in he could see you and Jeremy arguing about something. As he got closer to the counter he heard what the argument was about. Why Captain America is a complete asshole and how Iron Man deserved so much better. You being on Iron Man's defense and Jeremy on Captain Americas.
He idly stood by as he listened to the two of you beef it out. His eyes scanned through the case of trading cards looking to see if there were any that caught his eye when the arguing suddenly stopped and Jeremy was making his way over to him. Mickey hadn’t noticed you slip out until you were walking back up to the counter with his laptop in your hand. He noticed the name tag hanging from a punisher lanyard wrapped around your neck ‘Reaper11’ was scrawled across it in black sharpie. That must’ve been your gamer tag.
You didn’t say a word as you slid the laptop to him and turned to help a customer that had just entered. So Jeremy rang him up and he was leaving again. As he exited he thought of any excuse he could to come back to the shop. He thought about it on the drive home, when he ate dinner, as he jogged before work the next morning, he thought about it while he was up in the sky with Rueben for an exercise Maverick had them doing. It wasn’t until he was sitting at the Hard Deck sipping on a beer that he finally got the idea of going to just browse the store, maybe see if there was a funko pop or a t-shirt of some sort that he might want. Three days after getting his laptop he was back in the store.
He spotted you right away talking to an older couple that sounded as if they were looking for a gift for their grandson but wasn’t sure what to get for him. You helped them pick out a game and a pack of cards based on what they told you about him. You rang them up and sent them on their way with that same bright smile on your face as the first time he saw you. He glanced back to the shelf he had been standing in front of full of Marvel funko pops. He was about to move farther down the shelf until a voice popped up next to him causing him to jump a little.
“Who’s your favorite Marvel character?” You asked him, a playful glint in your eyes. He stood still for a moment staring at you. He hadn’t been this close to you before so he was trying to take you in. You had on similar attire to the first time he had seen you. A scarlet witch shirt, ripped jeans and a pair of vans, this time however a beanie was placed atop your head. He noticed the few freckles and moles that were scattered across your face. The way your eyebrows arched and then the shape of your lips, which were moving. He blinked a couple times before his brain started working again.
“Shit sorry, what did you say?” he asked you with a blush rising to his cheeks at the realization he had been caught staring at you. Your eyes slightly squinted as you let out a laugh. Head slightly thrown back. He decided that he wanted to do anything possible to listen to that laugh over and over again.
“I asked who your favorite marvel character is.” You told him as you finished laughing, gesturing to the shelf in front of you. He blinked again before answering you.
“Oh my favorite Marvel character would definitely have to be Hawkeye. I love his sarcasm and wit. He is also super underrated and I wish he had more screen time in the movies. I totally love his show though. Especially the fact they finally tied in him having a hearing problem. Though I think they should’ve had that as a part of his character from the beginning to be more true to the comics.” He took in a deep breath realizing he had been ranting to you. His left hand had come up to run across his face in embarrassment. He hadn't expected you to be standing there so intently listening to his tiny speech. Most people would’ve told him to shut up when he rambled on that way. You however looked invested in what he was saying.
“I completely agree with the hearing problems thing, it would've been more authentic for them to have done it from the beginning instead of just now after all the phases we’ve gone through without him needing a hearing aid. He is definitely underrated and I was so excited when they announced they’d be doing a show about him. It totally sucks what happened to Jeremy though with that accident he was in. I hope he makes a smooth recovery.” You replied to him with that same smile you had on your face while talking to the teenage girl and the older couple adorning your face. He wasn’t sure what to say to you. Stunned that he found someone that so easily conversed with him on topics he was interested in.
Then it was you that was caught staring at him. Your eyes moved up his face from his lips to his nose to eyes. As your eyes caught each other a blush rose to your cheeks this time.
“Has anyone ever told you that you look a lot like Joaquin Torres from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier?” You asked him, your head tipping slightly to the right as you took him in again.
“I have been told that a few times but I don’t see it.” He replied with a tiny shrug and a small smile. You simply hummed at the answer.
“Do you need help finding anything?” You asked him after a moment, staring at each other.
“I’m just browsing.” He said as he shook his head.
“Well if you need help finding anything just let me know alright. I’ll be up at the front so you can just yell for me.” You said as you rocked back on the balls of your feet. Pointing towards the name tag you were once again wearing. Then you were spinning around hands clasped behind your back as you made your way to the front of the store. He was kicking himself as you walked away for not finding something else to talk to you about.
He looked for a couple more minutes and decided on getting a vision funko pop and a BB-8 funko pop that he had been thinking about getting for a while. As he made his way back up to the front of the store he saw you going through a box of comics. He really didn’t want his time with you cut so short but he didn’t want to linger around your store too long and seem like a creep.
You smiled upon seeing him and pushed the box over slightly so he could set his stuff down. Neither of you knew what else to say so you went through the transaction in a comfortable silence. He noticed a reaper tattoo on your forearm as you handed him his compostable biodegradable bag. It was a reaper pepper dressed as a grim reaper. He would have to ask you why the fascination with a reaper but figured he would save that for another day.
As he was turning to leave you shouted out to him “Don’t be a stranger, okay?” he turned as he opened the door, a smile as wide as yours working its way across his lips.
“Wouldn’t dream of it.” he replied before slipping out the door. He would definitely be back soon the both of you knew that.

(What's new with Red? How's everything going with work and family and all? Any fun stories to tell?)
You and Red are opening the shop late today. The nice thing about owning your own business, Red says, is you can choose your own hours. And if that means not coming in until around 11 so you can have breakfast with your bro, your sister-in-law, and your niece, then so be it. Red is still laughing about little Poppy’s antics as he unlocks the door.
“…looked like she washed her hair in syrup,” he chuckles. “That kid is gonna drive ol’ Boss nuts one of these days.” He laughs again. “Well, more nuts anyway.”
You laugh too. “At least she looked super stylish,” you say. “Syrup and sprinkles is a real look. I think it’s gonna catch on.”
Still laughing, the two of you get the lights on and set things up for the day. Red’s shop is mostly a repair shop, but since part of what he does is fix up old game cartridges and consoles, there are some things for sale on the shelves. While he checks the list of stuff that needs to get done, you make sure everything is in the right spot.
Once you’re satisfied, you turn the sign on the door to Open and take your spot behind the counter. Red settles at his desk at the back of the store. The two of you crack jokes back and forth in between customers.
A late breakfast means a late lunch, so it’s not until around 2 that your stomach starts growling. Just as your’e about to suggest closing and heading to Grillby’s for lunch, the door opens and Boss and Poppy walk in.
“Skulls!” the little girl cries and nearly jumps out of her father’s arms and into yours. Thankfully she’s no longer sticky.
“Hey kiddo,” you say. “What brings you here?”
“Wanna visit,” she says. “Wanna play!”
“She was hoping you and Uncle Red would have some time to play with her while I run some errands,” Boss says. “She refused to stay with anyone else.”
“I like Skulls and Uncle Red!” Poppy declares. She wiggles out of your arms and runs to Red to hug him. He scoops her up.
“I’m fine havin’ her here if you are, Skulls,” Red says, looking at you.
“Sure?” you say. “Just no touching the parts bins this time, Pops. You made a big mess last time you were here.” She’d pulled Red’s entire parts box down off his desk, scattering tiny screws and electronics parts all over the floor.
“Oh, Poppy won’t do that again,” Red said. “I got somethin’ special for her this time. You wanna see it, baby?”
“Yeah!!!” Poppy’s eyelights sparkle and she thrusts her tiny fists into the air. “Show! Show! Show!”
Red stands up and goes over to a cupboard. “I found somethin’ the other day an’ thought of you, Poppy-pants,” he says. “And of your daddy. He used to have somethin’ a lot like this.” He pulls out a big cardboard box. It’s full almost to the top with colorful wooden blocks. “I woulda given it to ya for Gyftmas, but I didn’t find it in time.”
“Are those—?” Boss asks, stepping forward to look at the blocks.
“Almost exactly the same,” Red says.
“Bocks!” Poppy cries. “Put me down! I play! I build!!!”
Red sets her down and she dives into the box, pulling out block after block and happily exclaiming over each one. (“Purple!” “Twee!” “Twiangle!” “Fwuffy bunny!!!”) Her father and her uncle seem to be having a silent conversation, and you can just see a little shimmer of tears in both pairs of sockets.
“I’ll be back in about an hour,” Boss finally says. He bends and kisses Poppy on the top of her head. “Be good, dearest.”
“I will, Daddy.” She blows him kisses with blocks still in her hands.
“See ya, Boss,” Red says with a salute. He sits down on the floor next to the box. “C’mon, Pops. I’ll show ya how Daddy used to build traps with these.”
After Boss walks out of the shop, you turn the sign over on the door. You can open again when you’re not babysitting, and this way you can give your undivided attention to the cuteness that’s sure to unfold.
