Scenes/Things in Supernatural that genuinely don't make sense to me if Dean was straight:

The confession booth scene.

Sam just rolling with the fact that Dean's siren is a guy while still thinking sirens infect people through sex.

Dean being flustered by several men: Gunner Lawless, Aaron, Doctor Sexy, etc.

All the parallels between Destiel and other couples. (A big one being "last night on Earth" bc how do you do that accidentally.)

Having all the gay jokes be on Dean instead of Sam.

Paralleling Sam meeting his childhood celebrity crush with Dean meeting Gunner Lawless.

The boner Dean got when Cas cleaned up.

Dean gulping after Cas does an impression from a Western movie.

Charlie, a lesbian, calling Castiel "dreamy."

The way Mary looks at Dean and Cas when they hug.

Dean wondering why everyone assumes he's gay, while Sam not caring.

The logic that Charlie can't flirt with guys because she's only attracted to women, but then having Dean flirt with the guy for her.

Dean seeming disappointed when learning that Aaron's flirting was fake.

The amount of time Dean and Cas spend staring at each other.

Dean canonically having an orgy with Crowley.

A woman saying that she knows when someone's pining for someone else to Dean, just for us to learn that Dean was never in love with Amara.

The set design and script choices that lead to a cross in the background while Dean said "I do." to Cas after he came back to life.

That time when Dean wanted to say something and Cas was like, "It's okay, I heard your prayer." But Dean still looked like he wanted to say something important.

Amara: [about Dean] "I can see inside your heart. Feel the love you feel. Except, it’s cloaked in shame.”

Books of 2025: OVERGROWTH by Mira Grant.

Plant-astically delighted to report that I received an ARC via Tor (Nightfire) and Goodreads! I love Seanan McGuire's writing, and my first foray into her work as Mira Grant was INTO THE DROWNING DEEP, which was phenomenal (think all the best parts of Michael Crichton--the Science, the Speculation, the Consequences--but women and queer people are Entire Characters)(we love a good sci-fi horror paced like a thriller in this house).

The premise of OVERGROWTH is basically "the pod people are coming, they've been warning you about it for decades, and no one has been listening." Stasia, our main character and (first person, past tense) narrator, has spent her whole life telling people that she's "the vanguard of an invading species of intelligent alien plants," which is confirmed via a broadcast from space.

And the chapters are time-stamped "X days pre-invasion."

Yeah.

This book was an absolute delight and all around a lot of fun--the tone was the perfect balance of funny and heartfelt and relatable and dread-inducing, and it very much read like a love letter to the genre with lots of cross-pollinated references (Seymour? Little Shop of Horrors? War of the Worlds? Jurassic Park? Hello????).

It was also very much a book about the distinction between being human and being a person, and about alienation and belief and trust and friendship, and about queerness and neurodivergence and belonging. And, y'know, mimetic plant aliens, in myriad shades of green.

I was initially surprised by the choice to tell this story in past tense and first person (because DROWNING DEEP was patently not that, and most of what I've read of McGuire hasn't been either), but it turns out that was The Only Correct Way To Do It: For most of the book, Stasia didn't have the full picture of what was going on, but her partial understanding + our readerly perspective from inside her head carried both the relatability and the horror. It was a really interesting and cool way to do an alien invasion book (from the perspective of the invader's plant)(ahaha, botanical pun). Also, the narrative frame made me pterodactyl Hunter shriek my way through the last two pages, which. OOF. WHAT A RIDE!!! I'll be rotisserie-ing over the late-game twist (page 396/465 in my copy) and the ending for a long time.

I loved that the aliens felt alien and all too much like people; I loved Toni and Hunter; I loved the biology and worldbuilding; I loved the botanical quips ("salad bar" is, in fact, the best possible term of address to an alien invader, no notes); I loved the shady government agencies and unethical experimentation; I loved the "we are the monsters you have made". I stayed up way past my bedtime several times for this, and it was worth every second. Do recommend, check this out in May!!

The way a lot of people talk about the "male loneliness epidemic" and its effect on politics is so bizarre to me. I have not noticed that being conventionally successful (rich, well-liked, attractive, happy with their situation in life, etc.) consistently makes men less shitty about women. A man just does not need to have a lot of problems to blame them all on women. The problem can literally be "I sense that one woman at this social gathering doesn't like me all that much." The problem can be "I think that this woman, whom I don't want to date, has overly high standards for dating that I personally meet." The problem can be "women don't laugh when I make super-mean personal jokes about them." I'm sure sometimes it's easier for men to be nice when things are going well for them, but it's far from a guarantee.

So, I twisted my ankle 2 years ago and it's still fucked so I'm going to an orthopedist next week. (Yay EDS)

I was talking to my PT on the phone today and he went, "When's your apt again?"

"Next week."

"Okay, do you mind if I come?"

And, y'all, I feel really bad because I burst out laughing. Like, huge chuckles.

And just silence on the other end.

So I apologized and made some excuses but, honestly, I have no idea why I found it so funny.

I get why he wants to. My body is a cornucopia of fucked up and he has multiple theories about why my ankle has just hit a roadblock in recovery. So it makes sense that he would come with and be able to talk to the doctor face-to-face to discuss options instead of playing phone tag or me attempting to (no doubt poorly) tell my doctor his thoughts.

I dunno, I still find it really funny and I really hope if he brings it up tomorrow (during my actual apt) I don't laugh in his face because honestly it is a dick move to a really kind gesture.

But, y'all, it's just really funny.

friday, august 11 day 5: Benji gets Ethan to watch something geeky/nerdy (@benthan-week-forever)

Ethan and Benji found themselves cuddled up on a soft sofa, enjoying a quiet evening together.

The room was dimly lit, and the only source of illumination came from the glow of the television screen.

They had decided to watch an episode of Star Trek, a show that Benji was particularly fond of.

As the opening credits rolled, Benji couldn't help but share his excitement with the older one. He began explaining the intricate details of the technology featured in the show, his voice filled with passion and enthusiasm. Ethan listened intently, his eyes fixed on his partner’s face. He had a soft look, a mixture of adoration and contentment, as he soaked in every word that the blonde spoke.
