Probably-not-unpopular fan theory/HC, Dark Crystal (Podling/Deet edition)

You know what? I think the freaking Deterge started right in the middle of that Podling village's annual Mud Festival.

I think the Deterge is in fact deliberately TIMED to start in the middle of their annual Mud Festival.

And btw yes, I've decided there is such a thing as a Mud Festival. Why? Because as much of a little speech as the Order-master makes about Podlings being filthy, dirty beasts -_- , we don't actually see Podlings acting like this at any other time in movie, series, comic, or fiction that I know of. We certainly don't ever see Hup acting like that, and I know he's trying to get a coat-and-tie job ATM but come on.

So why would they be doing all that, flinging mud, wallowing in mud, eating mud, etc?

Well, BECAUSE IT'S MUD FESTIVAL, silly. Once a trine we give thanks for the bounty of the earth and the soil and reaffirm our intimate connection to it as Podling, mostly by drinking ourselves horizontal and getting magnificently dirty. I'm sayin' the mudball fights are SPIRITUAL, y'all.

And why during the holiday? Are Gelfling just that assholish?

Well yes, but also, optimal filthiness levels for our delinquents to have to clean and Learn Their Lesson! And an opportunity to remind them that Podlings are inferior creatures that need other species to even see to their basic hygiene, so however we treat them is OK.

I will also note that I've never been keen on the idea of Grottans not washing either. I mean here on one hand we have Deet and Hup getting understandably upset by comments about her being filthy or smelly, and as audience, we're meant to understand these are unfair charges. It's meant to be a racism Aesop, right? So why do we have Deet later saying to Seladon "why would I ever wash my hands?"

Seriously, girl? YOU WORK WITH LIVESTOCK FOR A LIVING. You're GOING to be cleansing your damn hands somehow. I'm sure Thra DOES have fecal-borne diseases even SANS the Darkening. -_-

Therefore, I would like to propose that Grottans do not usually technically wash--i.e., with water and soap or some other exfoliant--perhaps because there's only enough clean water for drinking, not for bathing?--but that there's some other thing they do.

I am open to suggestions. What do y'all think? Some kind of dust/grit bath? Smoke bath? Sauna and sweat-scraper? A special fungus? (It's Grot. There's got to be a special fungus for EVERYTHING.) I'm just saying we need to rectify this wrong against the Green Woobie, you guys. Help me out. :-D

Help, I got pulled into dark crystal by two certain people. (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE SKEKLA AND @devilbinx) *Cough* Anyways. Meet Skeksyn or "the Monarch". 

He will appear only in the movie.  After the Emperor died, SkekTek took a bit of his ashes in the hope to cheat Thra and death itself. He tried to find a way to be reborn again by an untested cloning technique. The experiment went well and soon out of the ashes and young Skeksis emerged. The doctor soon realized that he did not look like SkekSo or even remember anything, which means he created a new Skeksis out of the ashes. 

SkekTek proclaimed that this experiment was futile and wanted to destroy the youngling. But SkekZok believed that this was the emperor in some way and refused to let the scientist kill him. 

SkekTek couldn't refuse the Ritual-master and gave the newborn the name SkekSyn (Skeksis +Synthetic). Pleased with the name, the Ritual-Master gave SkekSyn the title "Monarch".

He immediately replaced SkekSo's place as the ruler, which SkekSil and SkekUng immediately displeases. Another issue is that SkekSyn has no counterpart, meaning that he has both sides. Good and evil. 

It will cause conflict under the Skeksis, but also they cannot do anything, because he is under the protection of SkekZok.

What a mess! He is also only the size of a Gelfling. 

I also need to headcanon that Jen takes WAY longer to get to the place. Because in the original movie he popped up within 24 hours  after SkekSo's death in that place.

Thank you for giving me an excuse to write this all out. I've written a rambly essay about wings, brief timeline thoughts, and dreamfasting!

I've been thinking way too much about gelfling wings. I like the headcanon that Hyrule is trans ftm so he gets wings (since gelfling born as girls have wings and boys do not)! I don't think he minds them at all. But it's got me thinking about other trans gelfling or how wings relate to gender for gelfling, if at all, and their utility. I've watched the original movie, the netflix series, and have read The Power of The Dark Crystal. I've skimmed Beneath The Dark Crystal and it seems like the flying troops and ground troops are split mostly between those with and without wings. One of the significant side-characters is trans and has a set of wings which are attached to like, a corset, wrap, thing. She gifts them to Kensho and he flies with them. There is a comment that "the council wants a winged leader anyways" which speaks back to the matriarchal society of Age of Resistance, but Kensho does not change anything gender-wise and still becomes leader pretty sure so like, leaders being women is what has been done traditionally but isn't required. But also like, are the worn wings magic? Can they fly on their own? In the movie Kira can't fly with her wings but only glide. Do different wings have different function, have they changed over time? I did a google search and came up with a quote from the novelization that it's the latter, that gelfling have lost the ability to fly. But then they get it back by PoTDC. Was it a symptom of the darkening, then?

BUT ANYWAYS- how does this apply to LU? Also I haven't read any of the other comics or books so I'm making a lot of this up. BUT LIKE wings seem like they'd serve a great utility. Especially for warriors even if they cannot fly but at least to glide (in the situation where the worn wings aren't magic). Maybe wing harnesses that can be worn? So Wild and Sky would get a pair as gliders. Four and Legend get a pair in place of the roc's cape and feather. I swear I saw a picture of the puppets once where it's shown Jen or Rian maybe have the outline of wings on their backs but I could also completely be making this up. But like, is the emergence of wings a coming of age thing? And if male gelfling do have vestigial wings what if there's gender affirmation surgery for trans mtf gelfling? Would it be for gender affirmation and presentation? Would it be for fashion? Utility? Would the wings have function? For gliding? What about full or partial flight? Genderfluid Wild where he's had the surgery and has some flight capability yet his wings are too small on their own so she still keeps a separate full pair which clip on and are then secured with a harness which allow for full flight. And they can swap between depending on how they feel like presenting or for utility. Legend also has a worn pair. He wears them to dress more effeminately, sometimes for gender, sometimes vibes, or as a fashion statement. (Wars too) He might also have a pair of wings that emerged but never developed to flight. There's a lot of interesting things to be done with the headcanon! (worn wings with different shapes to telegraph their function? Legend would have so many pairs, then!)

Would the worn wings be fabricated or something inherited from a passed family member, warrior, donated? There is Onica who has lost her wings so I don't think they grow back. I think Aughra would be miffed but proud of the gelfling's ingenuity: "Gave gelfling binaries to make things simple! Easier to understand! And yet they choose to listen to Thra anyways! Find their way back! PAH! What marvelous creatures! Seems they don't need Mother Aughra after all! PAH" and all the gelfling are like oh stop we do love you.

(and you know what? we can redirect Legend's righteous god-hating anger towards the Skeksis. This man would get along with Mother Aughra like a house on fire. Maybe she gives him too many quests, and maybe he resents her somewhat, but he's too fond of her as well. Aughra is Thra, after all. Maybe he just stops listening for a while. OoooOO internal conflict that has consequences in the world!!! >:D )

aaAAA Happy Pride?! Gender affirmation surgery for gelfling!

I've also been thinking about where to place these guys on the timeline. I think it'd be a shame to take them out of the same reality as the series as the preexisting cast has so much lore. Which I am not as versed in as I could be. But Age of Resistance is what sparked this so probably somewhere in that time or nearby. There's literally a great tree which bestows a vision unto Deet to leave home and save Thra but I don't want Hyrule to replace her... hmmm... I know I want them to be facing the darkening and that the crystal calls them (or calls their Zeldas). From there, idk. I mostly have ideas for some encounters for these guys with the creatures of Thra and general designs and how they're living taking the AoR clans as inspiration. (Currently I've placed them in Thra. I could also apply Thra to Hyrule. I need to weave in more Zelda elements.)

Wind would be Sifa. atm Hyrule is Grottan though that may change. I think Legend would be Sifa and Spriton, spending the harvest and planting seasons with the Spriton, and at sea the rest, but spends most of his time now traveling after an incident at sea. (He does not trust dreamfasting. OH GOD THE POTENTIAL ANGST FOR DREAMFASTING. Dreamfasting has been shown to share experienced memories- I'm unsure about actual dreams or imaginative things. Are the voiceovers in the shows shared through the dreamfast or are the gelfling speaking aloud, I'm not sure. I think that the great tree and probably Aughra might be the only characters shown to share visions? Can you imagine Legend refusing to dreamfast because he doesn't want to find out if Koholint is something he experienced in person or only dreamed of??? You also cannot pass on someone else's dreamfast and it's believed madness can be transmitted through dreamfast so there's that as well. Would there even be a way for him to tell? What if he can share it but is convinced its madness that he willed into memory? Wild's regained memories on the other hand can be eerily confirmed through dreamfast. Though that means I need to find a place earlier on the timeline to place him where something traumatic happens.) (THOUGH THE DARKENING SICKNESS- it manifests in various ways- in Power Of it grows on the gelfling and needs to be burned off with fire or purified by the crystal. It's how Kensho got his scars! It could be how Wild got his scars!) (there are lots of potential little ties to malice, gloom, and the triforce)

Wolfie is very big and has lots of teeth. I want him to be a much scarier creature to gelfling than a wolf is to a Hylian. Currently with six legs and amphibious.

(So here’s some headcanons I have re: trine. In the system of three suns + Thra, basically what’s going on is that there’s one central star and two other stars orbiting around it, and then planets like Thra orbiting that same central star at a much greater distance. We do NOT want to deal with any other star arrangement. I’ve read The Three-Body Problem. Now, because of the three suns, that’s a lot more heat and energy from the center of Thra’s solar system, so the habitable zone would be farther away from the suns than in Earth’s solar system. This means that Thra would have a larger, longer orbit/year than Earth. Because of thematic threes, I have arbitrarily decided that 1 trine would be about the equivalent span in a gelfling’s life of 3 years in a human life. So, a gelfling living 30 trine would be very old, they would be considered adults at 6-7 trine, etc. To be clear: I don’t care if supplemental official materials say something else. The timeline of the skeksis ruling Thra unquestioned needs to be longer than 1000 years from split to reunification considering how MUCH has been forgotten by the gelfling, and how much the skeksis needed to do to get to the state of the beginning of Age of Resistance. The equivalent human time of 3000 years is more viable.

UrSu teaches that one of the evils of the skeksis is the callous way they treat the gelfling, unconcerned with their lives because their deaths come so quickly. The skeksis and the urRu are mortal, just like the gelfling. They all eat and drink and breathe. They all sleep. They all bleed. There were 18 urRu and 18 skeksis the moment they split, and now there are only 16 of each. They are mortal.

The other urRu understand this and place it in their hearts. They will guard themselves against skeksis thought, and treat every gelfling life as a phenomenon of infinite value and wonder, no matter how quickly 30 trine can pass. They must be just as ephemeral to others. The sanctuary trees, surely. Thra itself, obviously.

The urRu are mortal, and they do not forget.

Their hair grows. Spirals twist their skin. It becomes difficult, then impossible, to stand tall without support. They, or their skeksis, suffer injuries, and the wounds heal into scars.

But they do not die, and they do not die, and they do not die.

UrGoh wanders. UrVa cannot give up the forest. UrSan cannot give up the sea. UrLi cannot be totally contented with an audience of only fifteen. In the early trine, before the Valley, they all had much contact with the gelfling, learning the crafts and skills they would need to survive on Thra as mortal creatures. UrSol still trades with gelfling after the Valley.

All urRu know they are mortal. They know they are not superior to gelfling because they have happened to live longer, so far.

They all see gelfling live and die, live and die, live and die.

They are just as mortal. They know this. And yet it cannot be helped, the thoughts that slowly grow, with so much time to grow. With gelfling generations blurring—eight trine for a baby to have her own baby, and no gelfling alarmed by the speed. Mourning, but no shock, when Thra takes back a gelfling after 30 trine. It is impossible not to notice how little their lives are, the more time one spends around gelfling.

It is impossible not to think that perhaps—just perhaps—death is something for gelfling, for creatures of Thra only.

It is impossible, when the breeze smells sweet with growing things, and a friend’s hands braid and comb one’s hair, not to think that so much life is a gift, and not a punishment. To welcome even the aches of age that can be soothed by a friend’s hands.

It’s wrong to think like this, and UrSu will explain why.

But at least it requires less frequent explanation in the Valley, where the fleeting lives of gelfling are not so often observed, not often thought about and so—cannot be treated callously.

So my species I made, I don't wanna go through the entire backstory cause it's a lot lol BUT some straightforward stuff, they're taller than Gelfling but still shorter than skekSis. They mainly have human features except they have big ol awesome wings!! And they can fly! Men have feathered wings and women have webbed wings.

ANYWAY I always liked the trope of the silly little boyfriend and the badass girlfriend/boyfriend/partner. I just think it would be really funny with Gurjin being the silly little guy lol

Gurjin x Reader Headcanons (Requester's Oc Species Reader)

Gurjin is the only one of the group to be in a relationship with someone of your species

He uses it as a playful flex with his friends

He loves it when you lift him a little so you can kiss his lips/face

Question? If you *had* to change the old Disney Snow White movie, either to adapt it to audiences now, or to make it closer to the original story, or fit your own headcanons? What would you change?

Asking because I genuinely haven’t thought about the movie until I saw you talking about the new live action version. And now I’m thinking about rewatching the movie and trying my hand at rewriting it.

What are the things you’d definitely keep, vs things that you might add if it got more screen time, or even stuff you’d cut or change. (One of mine is actually seeing the Hunter’s family. Which might be my forgetfulness? But I don’t think we do in the movie)

personally, I love 1937 snow white so much that I wouldn't change a thing hehe. I think it's wonderful the way it is.

But if I were to make my own adaptation (which I'm dead set on doing if I ever get the resources and ability to do so)....

I would do my own spin that focuses more on snow white's bond with the dwarves instead of the romance with the prince. As much as I am a sucker for romance, I do adore platonic relationships as well, especially those that are family-oriented. And snow white and the dwarves are my favorite parts of the 1937 film, so why not expand on that? Thus, the prince would probably be cut from the story, and it would be the dwarves who break the spell (they each give her a farewell kiss on the forehead that collectively breaks the curse). another thing I'd change is the dwarves, to an extent. they are still seven little men, but they lean more on the fantasy side. I'm thinking they'd look like a mix of a dwarf, gnome, and gelfling.

elements I'd keep are snow white's traditional attributes (hair black as ebony, skin white as snow, etc.), the evil queen setting multiple traps for snow white (I recall in the original fairytale that the queen tried to kill s.w. with a cursed corset and hairbrush? I'll have to brush up on my snow white lore), and the true love's kiss that breaks the sleeping spell.

I'd also load it with German fairytale aesthetics! I'd want it to be traditionally animated, in a similar style to these other works:

The general tone of my version would be a mix of dark fantasy (Don bluth vibes) and peaceful cottagecore (studio Ghibli). Generally a calm, beautiful, but eerie film that isn't afraid to get "Grimm" (eh?! eeeeehhh???!!).

Saw “Avatar way of water”, so many things to say that are greatly positive. One of the great things was that the water tribe got me inspired to draw early age Drenchen designs. I thought out of all the clans they would be the most active in the early and savage lands of the Swamp of Sog. Which I personally headcanonned that the Drenchen colonized despite the much stronger predators. Like the Drenchen in the Current Age, they incorporate beads and feathers into their fashion. They are quite proud of their physiques, but it’s not the reason their way of dress is very small. Sog is a hot place and Drenchens are hunters so they often wore clothing that allowed them to maneuver through treetops and not get weighed down when they swim. Made this on the flight on the way to my vacation destination.

Random Headcanon Meme

⍤ : What does your muse’s voice sound like? Is it light? High pitched? Scratchy? Deep?

I will be honest, I am very partial to G1 Starscream's voice. Very scratchy, very high pitched, all that. But I feel it's hard to imagine that specifically all the time on my blog. The crack posts? definitely. But the more serious posts and threads its a bit different. The best possible way I can describe His voice would be, and bear with me this is going to be a hell of a description..

The sound and pitch (and general whiney-ness) of The Chamberlain from The Dark Crystal, but spoken with the overall tone and infliction of The Joker specifically in Batman the Animated Series. Some example clips for those two: Chamberlain (at first his voice is gentle because hes trying to manipulate the two gelflings , but his voice towards the end where he grows angry is more what Im aiming for) The Joker (that second clip in this video is more what I see for him) Idk if this makes any sense, its just what my brain conjured up for some ungodly reason.

Nowen Headcanons

- Owen loves all reality shows including GBBO, although they can't compete he and Noah watch it every year and Noah orders fancy snacks for them to eat while they watch. - Although Owen loves going to parties with the rest of the TD cast he knows they burn Noah out so he always makes sure there's a box of Noah's favourite tea and a new book waiting for him when they get back home so Noah can wind down the way he enjoys. - They double date with other cast members with varying levels of success: dates with Geoff and Brody end in chaos although Owen always has fun Noah ends up outnumbered, Duncan and Noah are still pretty snarky with each other and Alejandro is still warming up to Owen but Aleduncan double dates work pretty well, Owen and Duncan can be goofy together while Alejandro and Noah chat over coffee, they don't talk about the one double date they went on with Courtney and Heather.

A Midsummer Night's Dream AU

- Adding to my original post to have the TD boyband whose name I can't remember in place of the players. They're having a bad band rehearsal where nothing's going right and Harold claiming he could easily take on all the roles in the band because of his mad skills isn't helping. The band temporarily splits and Harold ends up with Bottom's plot from the original play. At the end of the story the band gets back together for their performance which the main characters watch after they finally return home. - Originally only had Bridgette as the fairy queen and Katie and Sadie sharing the role of Puck in my outline but decided that Geoff as the fairy king is a good shout. He and Bridgette are having relationship problems and fighting over how Geoff is too lax with their kids which makes Bridgette seem like a strict mom. Katie and Sadie can't agree on how to resolve this relationship dilemma either and make Bridgette fall for Harold by mistake while they're still arguing about what they did with the main group.

High School Comic AU

- Duncan acts as Brick's mentor in the second year of high school... he's not good at it XD but Brick is able to make it through his Freshman year without too many issues. Alejandro and Duncan ship Jo/Brick almost immediately after seeing the two interact for the first time and Duncan gives various pieces of bad advice in regards to befriending her. Duncan also exclusively refers to Dawn as Gelfling after meeting her, mainly because Ron finally watched The Dark Crystal and has added it to Duncan's interests XD - Duncan and Heather's bedrooms reflect their journeys throughout the comic. Both are still quite childish to begin with so their rooms have a lot of stuffed toys and bright colours etc., their rooms look a lot darker and barren after they’ve been at high school a little while and attempt to lean into the whole grownup/hardass aesthetic, towards the end of high school their rooms finally incorporate the best of both worlds where they more accurately reflect how they’ve grown up but still show off their personalities. Heather's also incorporates lots of orange and pink tones to match the lesbian flag.

Drag Race Artwork and Potential Story/Drabbles

- Duncan’s first time attempting drag involved reusing Courtney’s blonde wig and princess dress with very basic makeup. As he grows more confident with his drag persona and making his own outfits, his looks incorporate lots of fairy tale and fantasy elements. He brings Lindsay on board as his makeup artist as he still struggles to do more than nails and eyeliner. Courtney is unamused to be branded his drag mother, instead taking on more of a managerial role and helping Duncan to secure gigs.- Alejandro’s experimented with more androgynous and feminine looks for as long as he can remember. He gets mistaken as solely a fashion queen at first glance due to how highly polished his outfits, hair, and makeup are, but he equally has the acting and dancing talent to match. Heather assists Alejandro with his brand and social media image, ensuring he always looks perfect and runway ready.

That observation about SkekSa's lack of navigational skills reminds of this particular headcanon I've made where said skill isn't just a literal flaw but also a reflection of the inner turmoil she faces within herself. That and the Mariner title was something that she placed on herself, not the Emperor.

When she first left the castle, what she really wanted to find was her "fortune". But what was it exactly? Is it freedom? Maybe love? Validation? Power?

Whatever it was, she knew she wasn't going to find it by being a court member.

And given her fascination with the Gelfling residing next/living out at sea, she thought that this would be a way to start fresh.

But in order to do that, she had to legitimize her presence to them. However that would come at the cost of trying to show off her true self. So when UrSan ended up coming into her life, she began to notice this toxic mentality that not only manifested within herself but also the company she keeps. They're a crew full of extreme mind-setted Sifans who have no intention of going back to land.

Sure, maybe creating this exaggerated version of yourself could potentially give you all the friends and gifts you wanted or never asked for, but it wouldn't be enough to focus on the things that truly mattered.

So UrSan balances that out by trying to get her involved in things like map making, star gazing, or just appreciating the simple things that the silver sea has to offer.

Also, she tries to channel SkekSa's positive trait. The type of trait that attracted so many Gelfling to her in the first place--her kindness.

But even that's not enough.

As time goes on, some of the Gelfling in her crew would come and go either through death or just leaving in general. Such thoughts terrify her because it feels like everything she worked so hard to protect is meaningless. And if that's the case, then that would mean her purpose--her entire existence--is meaningness. And all of that would only result in facing the inedible future where she dies alone and forgotten by the waves of time. It's why she tries to engage in a power struggle.

But even if she had the ability to take the power away from the castle, it would still be a pointless endeavor. Nothing will change. The Gelfling would still die under her watch and some would still leave her crew out of self-security.

Every attempt at trying to find her "fortune" failed because--other than being a Skeksis--she's exploring in a region that is well beyond her reach.

Just being in the castle and her entire existence in general is nothing but a prison. And deep down, she's knows it so she tries to either run away, deny, or cope her way through life in order to not confront the reality in front of her. It really makes you think that her alcoholism isn't some silly pirate trait.

The Sifans may live in the moment, but SkekSa looked towards the horizon. And that may have doomed her from the start.

TL;DR: SkekSa kept looking outward instead of looking inward, thus giving her an existential crisis.
