when I was a teenager, my school had an orchestra that was the most prestigious of the music programs there. You had to get auditioned and placed, whereas the other programs were opt-in. along with that orchestra, we had uniforms. Weird, low cut but floor length black dresses for the women, and tuxes for the men.

My girlfriend when I was 16/17 was trans identified, and a fantastic musician. When I asked why she didn't join the ensemble, there was one answer: the uniforms. She wouldn't join because she'd have to wear a dress. This was before being trans was a cool in-group where everyone had to bend to your will or face repercussions.

She wasn't "out" to anyone in that school as trans, except to a handful of close friends. I don't think there were any procedures in place for that sort of thing, so it was likely just up to whether tolerant teachers would play along or not. After a lengthy discussion with the directors, it was clear: if you're a woman, you MUST wear the dress. You have to. You cannot wear a tux. My friends and I commiserated with her, crying out transphobia.

Looking back, that's not the case. It's sexism. It's that the girls had to wear uncomfortable, itchy dresses, tripping over the long skirt, but with our entire top of our chests bare. I always felt it a shame that nobody was allowed to wear the uniform they wanted, or even more ideally, the sexist dresses removed and everyone wears tuxes.

Looking back, I realize that regardless of my ex's dysphoria, the fact that anyone who was a woman being forced into the secondary, non default, non neutral uniform instead of a tux that could fit everyone was hurting all of the girls at the school. We've seen stories of the girls who aren't allowed to wear pants under their graduation gowns or women who are mandated to wear heels to work. It's deeply misogynistic to force any and every woman into these roles, especially with no allowance to wear the more comfortable option. For every GNC woman, for every woman who doesn't want to wear a dress, for every woman who finds that dress uncomfortable, or for any reason at all.

underrated point of difference in the conventions of ancient and modern theatre is that the ancient chorus is all one gender and age group while a modern ensemble is more usually mixed, at least in terms of gender. must consider this more.

what is considered "beautiful" by society is inevitably sexist, racist, ableist, classist, transphobic, and bigoted. it targets and attacks any perceived difference, and it particularly villainizes women of color while co-opting aesthetics; as if features and cultural norms can be worn as accessories.

and the scary thing! you can see all of these things, know them to be true logically, and also know that you are treated better if you are perceived as beautiful. if you have ever been treated as "ugly", you know exactly how much society reviles you if you don't manage to scamper along and perform to their rules.

and how are you supposed to balance that? do you want a nose job to fix your broken nose, or have you just recently been seeing videos about how many people look better after nose jobs. do you want to lose weight to feel good, or is it that when you lose weight people treat you better. do you want to wear this outfit, or is it just the thing that's least likely to get you harassed. do you want to get lip injections for your reasons or is your whole reason that you don't feel beautiful unless you get those lip injections?

and the definitions shift. the goals get more specific. in the way that you only become aware of your tongue when someone mentions it; parts of your body are introduced as problems. i had never heard the term "hip dip" until about a year ago - and it was in the context of how to get rid of this. i'm 30, i know this shit is invented, and yet! i still find that strange voice saying but do you think someone is going to notice?

how the fuck am i supposed to say "this is my genuine choice i am making for my body" when i also know that years of my life have been spent socializing me to accept this as my inevitable fate? how do i know i'm actually doing this out of love for my body - or am i doing it for how i want others to see me, which will be lovely enough to feel loved? how am i supposed to recover when my unhealthy habits are seen as self-discipline but if i relax i'm openly mocked for "letting time win"? how the fuck am i supposed to say "i'm doing it for me" when i'm also very aware that i'm doing it to stop myself from being teased or demeaned? is it my choice if the other option is being bullied?

we are living in a hostage negotiation - either consent to the demands or spend the rest of your life being treated like you're a despicable person.

I find it annoying when people make Laurance hyperfeminine and everything feminine and Garroth hypermasculine and everything masculine.

Calling Laurance 'the mom friend' and Garroth 'the dad friend' saying Laurance is clean and likes to take care of himself while saying Garroth only washes his face. Letting Laurance break gender roles while not letting Garroth do the same. Having Laurance be comfortable with his feminine side and Garroth not, taking away Laurance's canon strength and athleticness, to go along with all the feminity, implying feminity excludes people from being strong. He was a top soccer player in mystreet and got into the possible jo9 members list. He is strong, even if it's with fastness and agility. Whatever fighting style you give Laurance; canonically, he can hold his own ground VERY well. Making Laurance sweeter than he is in canon, a "people pleaser", and making Garroth less so. And always giving Garroth the more traditionally masculine thing when assigning things to him or making an au and always giving Laurance the more traditionally feminine thing.

I don't know. It ircs me when I see this happened, I hate it so much. It doesn't need to be for fetishizating reasons and I am not implying it is or that you can't headcanon what you want. But it just makes me hurl.

This especially ircks me when it's done in mystreet where Garroth canonically does do it and Laurance doesn't.

In Diaries this is less the case, Garroth doesn't canonically break genderroles that much. But he still is very flustered during his crush on Aphmau, moreso than Laurance. And is actually pretty emotional? But tries to push his emotions away (and fails repeatedly). And regardless, doing that still makes me uncomfortable honestly.

No offense to the people that do it. It just, ircks me y'know?

A man in Essex county, England is causing concern amongst locals, especially parents, after being spotted loitering near children’s schools while wearing a schoolgirl uniform. In response to complaints, Essex Police is insisting the man “does not pose a risk,” and has warned the public against sharing photos of him on social media. 

Throughout the week, the unnamed man has been wearing the uniform of a young schoolgirl while wandering in proximity of two schools, one primary and one secondary. In the United Kingdom, primary school ages range from 5 to 11, while secondary school aged youth can be as young as 11. 

It has been noted that the uniforms of the man reflect that of Belfairs Academy, which is in the vicinity of the Highlands Boulevard School and Milton Hall Primary School in Southend-on-Sea. He has been seen near both of the schools this past week, as well as on the public bus when children would be taking it home after classes.

On January 19, official school uniform supplier Paul’s School and Workwear addressed the fiasco in a Facebook post, revealing that the man had been purchasing some uniform items from their shop.

The post explained to the public that “the full Belfairs uniform did not come from us,” but went on to confirm that the man had been in the store this week purchasing “a Grey box pleat skirt that he said was for his granddaughter.” The supplier announced they had banned the man from their store, and encouraged members of the public to call police if they see him. 

“This is to be taken seriously as he needs help and no-one would know his mind set. Reports say he dresses in Belfairs & Milton Hall uniform. If you see him – STAY AWAY and call 101 to report where he is.” 

Some in the community were appreciative of the uniform supplier’s firm stance on the matter, while others insisted that the man is free to dress as he pleases. One woman responded to the supplier’s post on Facebook, thanking the store for warning members of the public.

“Thank you Paul’s School and Work Wear for taking this seriously. A grown man hanging around multiple schools and staring at young women and girls on a bus used by school children is premeditated for sexual gratification – no matter what the mental health diagnosis is. I agree this man needs help…”

The commenter continued by invoking the memory of Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old woman who was kidnapped, raped, and murdered by a serving London Metropolitan police officer who used his status to handcuff and kidnap her. 

“Why should our girls be made to feel scared and have to move to other parts of the bus on their daily journey to and from school. This is not okay I do NOT want my children exposed to this.”

Another comment under the post from Paul’s reads: “We keep pushing the boundaries of acceptability. Grown men in children’s clothes hanging around schools is not acceptable and yet again police do nothing.”

Paul’s School and Workwear even addressed those who were defending the man’s behavior and added a comment to their own post.

As reported by Echo, the Essex police have identified “the person dressed in an inappropriate outfit in the vicinity of a school in Leigh,” and “have discussed the incident with the person,” saying they understand the community’s concerns but reiterating “this individual does not pose a risk.”

This was paired with Essex police’s urgent request to stop sharing photos of the man on social media citing that they “could have a detrimental personal impact on those concerned.” 

Essex Police did not refer to the man with any gendered language like “man” or “he,” but worded their statement in carefully-chosen neutral terms. 

As photos of the individual began to circulate on social media, many began to express disappointment with Essex Police’s seemingly relaxed attitude on the matter, with many taking it as a failure to protect young children and, in particular, young girls. 

One mother posting under an alias on motherhood forum Mumsnet said, “He’s been seen around schools – both primary and secondary – dressed as a schoolgirl (in their uniform). I am fucking outraged that the police don’t seem to think that’s an issue. God forbid we offend men or shame their fetishes.” 

Popular UK-based Twitter account @ripx4nutmeg has also called attention to the fact that Essex Police are trained by Stonewall, an LGBTQ activist organization which heavily focuses on trans rights. 

On their official website, the force states “Essex Police believes in dignity for all and are on a journey of incremental improvements, including how we can better include and enable the aspirations of people who are LGBTQ.” 

As noted by some women keeping an eye on the situation, the lack of apparent concern for safeguarding women and girls seems to be a pervasive problem amongst UK police.

As of 2021, there were hundreds of allegations of sex-based violence perpetrated by police officers in the country being recorded every year. Following the Sarah Everard tragedy, the Femicide Census revealed that they did not feel tackling such violence was a “police priority.” Since 2013, there have been at least 16 women in the United Kingdom killed by a serving or retired police officer.

In the past year, there have been multiple cases of police officers in the Metropolitan force serving the Greater London area were convicted of rape.

In the past week alone, a long-serving Met police officer has made international headlines for a campaign of rape he committed against vulnerable women.

David Carrick, who worked with the Metropolitan Police for almost two decades, carried out “a relentless campaign” of violence over 17 years against 12 women. On January 16, Carrick admitted to 49 counts of rape and other sexual offenses. Just weeks prior, Met constable Rupert Edwards was charged with raping two women in two different communities.
