How can schools collaborate with local businesses to enhance their STEM education programs?

In today’s rapidly advancing world, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education is more important than ever. However, schools often face limitations in resources, expertise, and real-world application opportunities. This is where partnerships with local businesses can play a transformative role. By working together, schools and businesses can offer students a more enriched STEM learning experience that not only builds technical skills but also prepares them for the future workforce.
1. Offering Hands-On Learning Experiences
Local businesses can provide students with hands-on experiences that go beyond the classroom. For instance, a tech company could invite students to visit their facilities and participate in real-world projects like designing apps or building prototypes. These experiences give students practical knowledge that textbooks alone can’t provide. Hands-on projects also inspire creativity and problem-solving, key elements in STEM fields.
2. Mentorship and Career Guidance
Partnering with businesses allows schools to connect students with professionals who can act as mentors. These mentors can offer invaluable insights into various STEM careers, helping students understand what it takes to succeed in industries like robotics, software development, or biotechnology. Mentors can also assist students with college preparation, internships, and career development, creating a pipeline from education to employment.
3. Providing Resources and Equipment
STEM education often requires access to specialized equipment, software, or lab space that schools may not have the budget for. Businesses can step in by donating resources or sharing access to their facilities. For example, a local engineering firm might lend 3D printers or high-tech tools for a school’s STEM lab. This enables schools to offer high-quality education without bearing the full financial burden.
4. Supporting STEM Competitions and Challenges
Many businesses sponsor local STEM competitions or challenges that motivate students to apply what they’ve learned in class. Competitions like coding challenges, engineering design sprints, or math olympiads not only make learning fun but also build a sense of achievement and teamwork. Businesses can also offer internships or scholarships to the winners, further incentivizing student participation. Learn more
5. Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Businesses often have a deep understanding of innovation and entrepreneurship, which they can impart to students. Schools can collaborate with local startups or tech companies to run workshops on innovation, product development, or entrepreneurship. These programs can encourage students to think creatively and pursue their own projects, potentially leading to the next wave of young inventors and entrepreneurs.
6. Real-World Problem Solving
Businesses face real-world problems that can serve as excellent case studies for students. Schools can partner with businesses to create STEM projects that address real-world challenges, such as developing energy-efficient solutions, creating eco-friendly packaging, or improving community health outcomes. These projects not only enhance learning but also show students the real-world impact of their skills.
Ready to Boost STEM Learning Through Local Business Partnerships?
Collaborating with local businesses offers mutual benefits for both schools and the business community. Schools gain access to resources, expertise, and real-world applications, while businesses cultivate the next generation of skilled workers and innovators. Through these partnerships, students can experience a richer, more dynamic STEM education that prepares them for the careers of tomorrow.

Note
This might be long, I'm sorry.
1: did you get diagnosed?
2: if yes, how did you go about convincing your parents to pull their heads out of their asses and listen for once?
If no, how did you go about dealing with the rsd of ' what if they're right and I am reading what I want into it' ( if you have experienced this ofc)
3: how do you go from recognizing you have a problem to doing something it. ( Can't seem to figure this one out on my own)
4; I hope you have a great day. And this doesn't reach you when you're tired. Feel free to take your time with it.❤️
Thank you for asking. I didn't realized I had asks on my inbox, so this comes a little late. To answer your questions:
1. Yes I did get diagnosed by a psychiatrist, who specializes in the field. I am now in the process of getting a new assessment of ADHD and ASD from a psychologist, referred by my psychiatrist.
2. I didn't have to tell my parents anything, because I am an adult and they no longer control my life. Either way, I doubt they'd be surprised, since 2 of my siblings are diagnosed with schizophrenia and another is self isolating in his room for the last 5-6 years.
3. I had many issues as a child and teen, but mental health wasn't a priority in my family and didn't know much about it. As a teen, I knew I was different in ways of thinking and behavior, but thought myself as 'normal' and tried to fit in with my peers (I had a few good friends who accepted who I was). I was also somewhat gifted in STEM fields, because of my logical and analytic thinking. I was reading a lot of books about things that interested me (e.g I once read a book about Pascal programming, so I was always ahead of my peers at IT class) therefore I was developing important skills like problem solving and thinking logically. I obsessed over physics, so I was reading Stephen Hawkin, Wineberg, Michio Kaku etc, so I won a few olympiads in physics and mathematics and was seen as a physics genius in my school. I painted my walls with planets and the cosmos and wrote famous physics formulas. It was unusual yes, but I was too obsessed to even care what others think. My native language is not English, but I learned through reading and English movies. I adopted many behaviors and attitudes from movie heros to kinda sorta regulate my behavior (didn't really work).
My point is: I laid emphasis so much on my special interests that it really boosted my self esteem (alas in an artificial way) and made me appreciate my talents rather than focusing on the negative aspects. Some of my peers did bully me by saying things like "you only know physics" when I didn't know gossip knowledge, or casted me as a lesbian because I wasn't interested in boys of my age and cut my hair short. It hurt back then, but I somehow kept my head high and carried on. "Soon enough I will be at university in a foreign country away from all of them" I was telling myself, while doubling down on my interests.
It was only very recently (at 32) that I decided to take action and care for my mental health, when I realized not many things in my life satisfied me anymore, despite a successful career, happy marriage, access to traveling and luxury etc. My ADHD symptoms started showing and I was switching interests and jobs frequently. I was a pain in the butt to my husband with my constant nagging and rigidity and was in general depressed and couldn't focus on my job. Knowing that I had ADHD and having it confirmed gave some comfort and also alleviated some of my symptoms with medication and psychotherapy. And believe me, despite my diagnosis I still have the same doubts you have. But then I read or see a meme about ADHD, so I reaffirm myself that maybe I am not faking it.
My advice to young undiagnosed persons, who suspect they are on the spectrum (whether ADHD/ASD) with unwilling/ignorant parents is to focus on yourself and your interests when you are still a teenager. You have a very unique ability to hyperfocus on your interests that you can potentially make a career out of and become very successful. That potential is still there, whether you are diagnosed or not and you should make perfect use of it now. Be unique and be bold about your interests and who you are and find friends who appreciate you for being who you are. Adulthood will get to you all soon enough and you would have the tools (and money) to get the diagnosis, if it's still a big issue in your life, or is important to you.

My Coding/Web Scraping Journey !!
- From the pov of an absolute beginner.py
Hi guys, as many of you may be aware of I, once upon a time, had a sort of series on this blog related to the mathematical olympiad (of my country) where I kept a record of my preparation and eventual examination and advised here and there about ways to proceed based on personal experience. ( you can check it out here! )
What you may not know is that I've been continuously postponing learning to code, specifically in python, for a bit over a year now. Recently, I got the chance to join a Web Scraping Project related to current politics. I decided I would love to keep a record of that experience too, so here is the first part:
Part I: Learning Python
Since I enrolled in a relatively recent project made by very hard-working students, I'm not going to expose the preparation they encouraged. What I am going to do is divide what I learned into different phases and link possible resources below:
Phase I: Basic info, variables, data types and lists.
Intro - Version of Python (use 3.9+), the process of installing and available guide on their website. To use Python, you can use your computer's command prompt, but for proper code, I use VSCode some use Sublime or even PyCharm. There are various options available but, I generally encourage Visual Studio Code.
General awareness of the various functionalities of Python - from data storage to calculators - Try some basic exercises like making a, as previously mentioned, calculator. To truly learn coding, I think practice and fun is very important - so just mess around a bit. Try doing some calculations first or even using variables without really knowing what they are.
Variables - Learn to assign variables to various values, and that by using print() you are able to see them in the shell/terminal.
Data Types - Learn that there are different types of objects (everything is an object in python!!), such as
booleans - which are True and False, they’re really useful especially when comparing data,
strings - essentially it’s text, to introduce them you have to use single ( ’ ’ ) or double ( “ “ ) quotes,
integers and floats - both are numerical values, the difference being that floats have decimals aka floating-points ;)
Inside variables you can insert any of these values and to discover the type of a variable, let’s say A, simply insert print(type(A)) into your code and it will output in the terminal. If it’s a boolean, the output will be “bool”, if it’s a string it’ll be “str”, if it’s an integer it’ll be int and if it’s a float it’ll be float.
You can also convert data types into others, for example:
age = 1
print ( “I am” + age ) will create an error - because, although you can add strings (do try!) and add integers with themselves [check the difference between 1 + 1 and “Maria” + “Maria” \ “Maria” * 2 (you can multiply strings! If you think about it, it makes sense)], you cannot add or subtract a number from a string.
To make the code run you’ll need to do the following:

Resources:
Google’s Python Class - The teacher is very good, from what I saw. Proper lectures are available (an hour or so) and exercises are provided. Everything is very organized and clear. Good for a relatively in-depth knowledge of Python.
DataCamp - Great balance between theory and practice, heavily advise. Videos are considerably short, it’s possible to end phase I in less than an hour. Good for initial and superficial knowledge of Python. Tried it and loved it!
Microsoft’s Intro to Python - The literal definition of short and sweet, 8 units and 16 minutes of learning. Good first contact with the programming language.
Udemy courses - Check for free ones, there are various to choose from. If there’s a reasonable amount of options, which I believe there is, I heavily advise choosing the one more heavily catered to practice. I linked one I found and had good reviews but please research some more and see what fits your learning style.

Discover Tinkerly's Innovation Lab For Kids
The education practices have been revolutionized in the last few years. In earlier days, a teacher taught a student by drawing a diagram on the blackboard or by pointing out the diagram in the academic textbook. Since that time, the education system has progressed toward showing the student a 3D animated video in a Smart class. But the thing is, science needs experimentation.
As per famous scientist & Inventor, Benjamin Franklin:
Tell me something, I forget easily, teach me something, I remember, involve me and I learn.
In order to truly understand the real-life concept of Science, one has to perform a live experiment without mugging up the concept. When a student performs a live experiment, it teaches them the practical angle of how things work in real-life scenarios. They will gain real experience by performing STEM-based activities and get the satisfaction of gaining knowledge. This is where Tinkerly's Innovation Lab comes in. With the help of the innovation lab program blends the school's existing lesson plan and enables teachers to provide high-quality science education to their students in the classroom.
