I live in the UK and am still in high school, i want to study biochemistry or something similar at Cambridge before doing dentistry at another university, what are some good extracurriculars to do? and what should i do in university to prepare myself for applying to dentistry as i want to get into a top university for that as well.

Pretty sure i will get 10 9s at gcse and hopefully 3/4 A* at a level but not sure if that’s enough to get into a top university? (nowhere near as competitive as ivy leagues but still it’s obviously difficult to get accepted)

From what I can tell, dentistry is a 5-year degree that you can enter upon completing your A-levels, so you don't need to take a biochemistry degree first. You may be able to do a 4-year degree course for dentistry if you already have at least an upper second class degree in a relevant subject (biology, chemistry, or biomedicine), but that seems to be less common, and it means you'll have done 7 years of school for a degree you could have finished in 5.

When you apply for a dentistry course, you may be asked to take the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) or BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT). They test the skills you'll need on the course, like critical thinking, problem solving, data analysis, communication and scientific knowledge.

The best dentistry programs in the UK are University of Glasgow, University of Plymouth, Queen's University Belfast, University of Dundee, and University of Liverpool. A list of other qualified schools can be found here.

For those programs, you will need at least 6 GCSE subjects at Grade A/7. This typically includes some combination of Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and English Language/Literature.

You will also need A*AA – AAA grades on your A-levels. Two of those subjects should be be Biology and Chemistry. The third A-level can be in something that isn't science based.

If you do want to do a degree in Biochemistry at Cambridge, you'll apply to the Natural Sciences program.

For this program, you will need A*A*A*- A*A*A grades on your A-levels. The combination of subjects you take can vary, but should generally include some combination of Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Biology. You will also need to take the Natural Sciences Admissions Assessment (NSAA) at an authorised assessment centre. Cambridge does not have any GCSE requirements.

Unlike in the US, universities in the UK generally don't care about extracurriculars. Your A-level results are far and away the most important thing when it comes to whether or not you'll be admitted. Thank you for asking. I didn't realized I had asks on my inbox, so this comes a little late. To answer your questions:

1. Yes I did get diagnosed by a psychiatrist, who specializes in the field. I am now in the process of getting a new assessment of ADHD and ASD from a psychologist, referred by my psychiatrist.

2. I didn't have to tell my parents anything, because I am an adult and they no longer control my life. Either way, I doubt they'd be surprised, since 2 of my siblings are diagnosed with schizophrenia and another is self isolating in his room for the last 5-6 years.

3. I had many issues as a child and teen, but mental health wasn't a priority in my family and didn't know much about it. As a teen, I knew I was different in ways of thinking and behavior, but thought myself as 'normal' and tried to fit in with my peers (I had a few good friends who accepted who I was). I was also somewhat gifted in STEM fields, because of my logical and analytic thinking. I was reading a lot of books about things that interested me (e.g I once read a book about Pascal programming, so I was always ahead of my peers at IT class) therefore I was developing important skills like problem solving and thinking logically. I obsessed over physics, so I was reading Stephen Hawkin, Wineberg, Michio Kaku etc, so I won a few olympiads in physics and mathematics and was seen as a physics genius in my school. I painted my walls with planets and the cosmos and wrote famous physics formulas. It was unusual yes, but I was too obsessed to even care what others think. My native language is not English, but I learned through reading and English movies. I adopted many behaviors and attitudes from movie heros to kinda sorta regulate my behavior (didn't really work).

My point is: I laid emphasis so much on my special interests that it really boosted my self esteem (alas in an artificial way) and made me appreciate my talents rather than focusing on the negative aspects. Some of my peers did bully me by saying things like "you only know physics" when I didn't know gossip knowledge, or casted me as a lesbian because I wasn't interested in boys of my age and cut my hair short. It hurt back then, but I somehow kept my head high and carried on. "Soon enough I will be at university in a foreign country away from all of them" I was telling myself, while doubling down on my interests.

It was only very recently (at 32) that I decided to take action and care for my mental health, when I realized not many things in my life satisfied me anymore, despite a successful career, happy marriage, access to traveling and luxury etc. My ADHD symptoms started showing and I was switching interests and jobs frequently. I was a pain in the butt to my husband with my constant nagging and rigidity and was in general depressed and couldn't focus on my job. Knowing that I had ADHD and having it confirmed gave some comfort and also alleviated some of my symptoms with medication and psychotherapy. And believe me, despite my diagnosis I still have the same doubts you have. But then I read or see a meme about ADHD, so I reaffirm myself that maybe I am not faking it.

My advice to young undiagnosed persons, who suspect they are on the spectrum (whether ADHD/ASD) with unwilling/ignorant parents is to focus on yourself and your interests when you are still a teenager. You have a very unique ability to hyperfocus on your interests that you can potentially make a career out of and become very successful. That potential is still there, whether you are diagnosed or not and you should make perfect use of it now. Be unique and be bold about your interests and who you are and find friends who appreciate you for being who you are. Adulthood will get to you all soon enough and you would have the tools (and money) to get the diagnosis, if it's still a big issue in your life, or is important to you.

Due to my job and current relationship status, I drive a lot. I don't think I'm the only one, but if I'm stuck in a car by myself from more than an hour things get topical and deep.

A part of me feels like it'll always be stuck in the past. I find myself reaching for acceptance that I don't need and closure from people who have well forgotten the past.

But one person in particular, other than myself, cannot forget.

I find it funny how parents know best. I mean, not all the time, but they have a pretty good idea from their own past experiences.

(I don't know why I said was, she still is but I'm too lazy to make changes.)

Now, Bertha and I were really okay friends. You know those people who just make their way into your life without you acknowledging it was happening and then they suck on like a leech.

Yeah. That was Bertha.

Bertha came in around 4th grade.

Now I went to a Private Catholic school when I was a smol Piyoko. I don't know if this is true for all, but my school had a maximum of 86 students for PreK through 8th grade. I think the smallest class was a few grades below me who had 6 students (2 boys and 4 girls and you best believe there was some crazy drama!) Anyways, basically with a small class and being stuck together for years on end, the class cliques were already established at a young age.

So Bertha joined in 4th grade. This was odd since new students normally didn't join that late, but it does happen.

Bertha was greeted by most of the popular people in my class (I should say there was about 18 of us.) Bertha was fine. I don't remember much about her back then since we did not talk much. I just remember she had terrible handwriting and had a hard time spelling.

Which there's nothing wrong with. Just a few things I remember.

In fact, the reason we did begin to interact was that I was put in the "Specialized Math Course" designed to help the stupid people with math. Getting off topic a little more, they set this up in the library basement like far back where the nuns used to stay. It was crazy! For people who believe in the paranormal, they'd probably say that part of the school was haunted.

Bertha and I had frequent conversations in that basement. Mostly about how we hated math and that we weren't trying that hard anyway since stupid people math was fun and we got free candy. Half the time I don't think we did any math.

Through 5th and 6th grade, Bertha and I were kinda friends. I hate to admit fully that we were ever friends, so I'll say she was a girl who had a lot of cool stuff I wanted and I was someone who would talk to her.

My mom hated Bertha. She told be Bertha was a troublemaker and a bad influence. I know some peoples parents prefer kids calling them by their first names, but my mom was a firm believer that it was rude to do so.

The only kid that got away with calling my parents by their first name was Vio. To this day I still don't know why.

One day Bertha wanted to join Science Olympiad and asked me to do events with her. And I was like pfffffft sure, I got time to waste.

What up nerds, that's right, I was in Science Olympiad and you best believe I only did it for the free shirt.

This was a whole day that my mom drove us around to events and spent the day with her. At the very end after dropping Bertha off, she looked me in the eyes and said, "Do you seriously like this girl,"

Again, for my own pride, I'll never admit to being besties with her. But against my will, she kept me close and told me a lot of things. I never told her anything since her big mouth couldn't keep shut, but I did (*baby barf*) enjoy somewhat of the time with her.

She always had good snacks at her place.

Now before you scroll away thinking, "Oh Bertha was just a kid ya know, I don't see why you hate her."

Here's the thing I say to you.

Bertha was manipulative. She surrounded herself with me to make sure that it was only her.

Just Bertha. (DDLC fans ehhhhh?)

She could be social to anyone she wanted but once I tried to talk to anyone else she'd flock to my side and talk about all the fun times we had.

Bertha was so freakin' nosey about everything. I never liked to open up about anything, so she'd attempt to pry it out of me.

I hate saying I was a victim or whatever, but in that time I had a bus driver who was manipulative in a sorta rapey, child molester way. I was a very naive child and I thought he was just an overly generous, lonely, old man.

Bertha didn't ride my bus. Bertha didn't know that bus driver. But for some reason, Bertha made a statement to the principal about how he had come onto her.

Omg, why would she do that?!

Because Bertha enjoyed the attention.

Bertha fed off others attention.

Bertha was an attention seeker and any chance she would pounce on it.

Going into 7th grade, I noticed this. I became a little more self-aware and aware of those around me. I began choosing friends. Better friends. I stopped talking to Bertha as much.

Saying this again, I was naive. Very, very, stupidly naive.

I never had a phone. I never had an iPod. I barely was able to use a computer.

Basically, I had zero knowledge of it and only assumed that everyone on the internet was good people.

CLC Tecno Olympiad conducts the Clctecno Science Talent Search Exam, one of the most popular Olympiads for school kids in class 6 to class 12th. The organization feels that children's brains operate in several directions. Some people excel in math and mathematics, while others have a scientific bent of mind.
