Oh you listen to TMA?, well would you recommend it?

i did listen :D!! not much anymore haha but i was real into it back in like 2020 (: and well . that is a VERY layered question bc i have very mixed feelings about tma as a podcast sorry anon im sure u were hoping for a cut and dry yes or no but alas .... i ramble

so basically short answer is that if you want to get into non-dnd fiction podcasts and be an active member of fandom for them i would highly recommend you listen to tma not even out of tmas own original quality but just because its So popular and its made Such an impact on the fiction podcast landscape . i would recommend wtnv for a similar reason but also just because wtnv is just great and a wonderful listen (and my special interest lol) - SOOO many people around you are gonna be referencing tma and referencing the entities and listening to at leaset a good chunk of it at least once will make your experience in the fiction podcast fanbse more enjoyable because when people say stuff like . idk "sydney would be a corruption avatar" youll understand wtf theyre saying . so just on a very functional level id recommend you listen to it just so you understand the references that people around you make (:

whether i would recommend tma based on its own merits is .... more complicated . because tma is one of those pieces of media where the good attributes are REALLY INCREDIBLY GOOD and the bad attributes are very noticeable, and some of those can even be the same thing - for example, while ive had many in depth discussions about how poorly implemented i think the entities system is and how frustrating it is that theyre so poorly balanced throughotu all the episodes, i still think its one of the most genius pieces of world lore ive seen and does an AMAZING job at accurately encapsulating every single fear you could think of.

so basically, while i would recommend tma both because it has some VERY amazing aspects and because it had such an Impact on fiction podcasts that itll be tricky to avoid it if u wanna keep getting into narrative podcasts, i would recommend you examine it critically while you do so. like by all means have fun its GREAT the horrors creepy its popular for a reason!! but also make sure youre able to examine the writing flaws, both the ones that are just writing issues (like the pacing problems) and the ones that probably come to mind more when you think of "examining media critically" (like the narratives Very odd relationship to the police) . basically i would recommend checking it out and i think its very likely youd enjoy it but dont get too attached to it that you cant handle valid criticism because there is a LOT of valid criticism to be made

also ive heard stuff about ethics issues with the production company itself, im not really caught up on which parts of that are real and what the accepted appropriate ways to handle it are (like i said im not actively keeping up with tma anymore so i dont really know much about the good or the bad rn), but basically i wouldnt contribute to the the magnus protocol kickstarter (its got enough money as it is) and would instead support your favorite smaller podcasts instead (: theres loads to support if u wanna support a podcast financially!! blue mayfield (creator of camp here and there) in particular is struggling quite a bit, thats a good place to support (:

but again to wrap it all around this isnt a post dissuading you from listening i WOULD suggest you listen to it to understand what other people say about it in podcast spaces as well as because it genuinely has some really good creepy episodes and strong compelling characters w interesting dynamics and some really good examinations into themes like what it means to be human or the nature of fear and where it comes from . its definitely an enjoyable listen and one id recommend listening to at least once to anyone who wants to get into fiction podcasts and interact with the fanbase in any way!! i loved it in 2020 and i still adore many of the characters now (: i just have a lot of emotions about it lol im sure this is a way longer and more convoluted answer than you were hoping for whoops </3

i love the old married couple portion of your follow up to sober ii (melodrama)! outsider povs just tickle the brain, especially in tsh where the characters are so just disconnected from normal society. out of curiosity, have you thought any more about how students/peers/other people view francis and richard throughout that au?

i love that portion too i think the idea of them as this long established couple (for all intents and purposes, altho they may have deviated from certain aspects of a nuclear family monogamous relationship) is so funny & interesting. like sober ii already does so much legwork from canon and then the followup even further so by the time we hit middle age it’s a free country for what is allowed.

you’re right in that the tsh cast are deep weirdos to anyone normal interacting w them. i think they have naturally changed somewhat by the time we reach them in that portion bc for francis he’s now (gag) middle class and sort of domesticated / for richard he’s like.. in a long term relationship w a man (it’s funny they have reverse things to get used to) & plus yk there’s the whole thing where they’re both deeply troubled individuals with abusive childhood drama and bad relationship history so probably sticking it out together has done some healing / good down the line. so in some ways they’re a little more Normal mentally. but that said they are still weirdo murderers with terrible personalities who would both annoy and enable each other so not that normal.

talking abt how they go from sober ii to where we see them in their 40s is a separate post so in terms of outsider pov specifically i’d say they do kind of stick to themselves (codependent freaks) but like in the neighbourhood / on campus / in montreal classics circles they def have relationships and certain uhh reputations that go with them.

richard’s students are a fairly niche group so i think as a whole they tend to like him- if nothing else he’s genuine in his love of the material and he’s attractive and kind of reserved so he’s probably at his least annoying / cringe / questionable when teaching despite his inner monologue. he probs has bad timekeeping (cf his flop job at hampden) and pretentious grading but generally okay. we know he comes across much more sane and sound to people who don’t know him well (very tartt, we love). and then they don’t know francis at all apart from Maybe as f. abernathy the classics translator guy. so realistically to the students they’re actually quite a cool addition to the student rumour mill. i think over the years there have been random glimpses of them but never anything interesting until the fic incident, or similar ones that make it obvious professor papen has what seems to be a boyfriend. then everyone is ‘literally obsessed’. i don’t know if anyone ever IDs them as witnesses to the hampden murder-suicides on a true crime podcast and then gets excited about their tragic backstory and inspiring romance, but that would be fun.

professional peers see more of them obviously, but they do still keep to themselves a lot. richard’s colleagues’ opinions vary depending on how much interaction they’ve had with him and in what context, bc he definitely has beef with administration and some colleagues whose courses he doesn’t respect. he’s professionally respectable though. francis is a fairly lowkey presence in translation- he got initial buzz from the julian student clout but he only sporadically networks. he definitely has culture friends who gossip amongst themselves about him vanishing from boston so close to the wedding and no one hearing from him until his book got published. alex from NY wants to fuck both of them but finds them annoying as talents and good in small doses as friends. most of that author circle is at least a little jealous of them as a couple, maybe because they flourish when amongst people they can close ranks on.

in terms of other canon charas… some of that feels like its own post too. judy does not particularly get why richard is into francis but she thinks they’re a hot item and she overall likes them and their weird little bohemian* lifestyle (*misrepresented). she thinks they’re a good match. charles would not have very nice things to say. i think he’d think richard ‘fell for it’ with francis. his own complicated relationship with francis would predispose him to think they weren’t a genuine item. if he saw them down the line as an established couple he would probably just find it funny. and camilla… she’s sort of like “good for you crazy kids”. like it’s completely random to her but it tickles her nihilistic brain. later esp if she’s around them in person for some reason she’s just completely on board with it and has a strong fondness for their relationship bc it’s like, this one weird positive thing to have come out of the whole hampden disaster, AND it’s taken a lot of the strain out of richard’s relationship to her even though he never especially lets go of his camilla-shrine. richard’s naturally Very Embarrassed about being in any way datey with francis around her but it tapers off with age/habit despite his best efforts. francis on the other hand perversely enjoys making richard uncomfortable around camilla. guess which one she enables.

ive been like having visions of how arthur feels about human connection and what it has to do w his griefs (parents wife daughter) and this part just fuels it more. like we know that he's not the type to reach out to ppl HE FUCKING MISSED HER FUNERAL. yk. where a lot of ppl would mourn the dead and console the family left behind. but arthur couldnt bear to see his wife go, especially after what he'd done (or lack thereof) to her. meanwhile daniel was seeking for a connection, and its not unreasonable that daniel being there was part of why arthur didn't attend. but arthur never went to see daniel. he spent his time working and left his daughter to tess. after faroe's death he talked with daniel but then drove him away once again. until parker reached out to him. and we know he's persistent, and it took some time for arthur to finally open up. arthur never reached out to people, people reached out to him. bella was the one who first took a liking to him too.

and then we have john. the resident entity living in arthur's eyes. suddenly arthur loses his privacy (and remember the prison - "that's not for you." "what?" "my thoughts.") and their situation leaves arthur very vulnerable but after some time they open up to each other etc you get it you've listened to the podcast. its like. john isn't just persistent, he's nagging for arthur to tell him stuff. parker intended to help so he knew topics he could touch and the ones he shouldn't, but i doubt john had the same purpose.

anyway that wasnt my visions i talked at the beginning. my visions are very loosely based on canon, setting place in an ending (or part of the story maybe) where john gets his own body. i see your "arthur misses john and they're touchy all the time" or the touch starved arthur things and i love every single one of them with my john shaped heart but consider. arthur who has not had much deep connection in his life, who felt wrong to live with his wife or have a family, who keep his fil miles away, who has gotten "more scars in a few months than [he does] in a lifetime." imagine him being scared of touch but desperate for a connection. he doesnt have a lot of experience of physical intimacy but he's able to open up to people (james, parker). being separated from john changes a Lot of how they interact because they are in a way touchy with each other but also not really?? also arthur was the one to bring it up so cheerfully like "maybe you could get a body of your own!" but you know what happened to everyone around arthur who isn't john. they leave. even john came back (REMEMBER THE MINEEEEES. "john :'( you remenber :'( you have your hand back :'( let me shake it :'(" insane cinema). he feels bad for feeling bad that john has his own body. he doesnt want to feel like he wishes john were less free/confined in his mind still but he does wish that john were still with him. despite john being in front of him listening to him just as he always did. anyways oh boy there are SO many of these that i have this is gonna get long i think

starting off with sports, i feel like he’d be an active guy. not like gym bro buff craig kinda stuff you see, he’s definitely a lanky beanpole. but i feel like he does a few sports so has a bit of muscle

first off, basketball. i’m a truther for this one, i don’t see it a lot tho. like, i hc him as being pretty tall, and i don’t have much like canon advice to back this up but that and the fact that there’s a basketball in his garage in tsot- but i think it jus fits him tbh. and also because it’s funny, he’s a total fucking loser nerd, but since yk i’ve gotta stick to canon sometimes, he’s technically popular and attractive, he definitely has like a jock alter-ego or smth stupid like that LMAO

he definitely seems like a hockey guy. like- the enforcer is so him. he’d totally wanna beat people up just cus he can. also i think he’d be a really good skater- i think he’s a pretty well balanced person physically. also, i see kyle as doing hockey, and they’re definitely close. i just see them being friends making sense, so now theyll have a sport together. also- because im insane, ike does hockey too and kyle and craig help him practice

starting off, he’s 100% a music guy. i see stuff about him preferring podcasts over music, but i see him as a total music guy. in @panicatthecourtx more recent posts, she kinda went over that stuff, but because yk, im the craig ceo i’ll go over it too. i call it dad rock cus thats what my dad listens to, but he definitely listens to nirvana, ac/dc, weezer, that kinda stuff. he’s just a nerd. but i feel like he’d also have music as a way to vent in some sort of way? idk if it makes sense this is just how my brain works, but when he’s stressed, overstimulated, or just down in the dumps he zones out and just listens to music. he’s also just a nerd

space, duh. he could go on and on about that shit for hours. he can make every constellation, am every galaxy, all the nebulas, and basically anything. especially black holes. they fascinate him, he finds them so interesting and yk. is a nerd about em. ik it doesn’t really tie in with space stuff but i’ll put it here, he definitely loves conspiracy theories, especially ones about aliens and stuff. he thinks of his own all the time. especially about other space related things. also, back to conspiracy, death absolutely fascinates him. he just want to know what happens after that.

this is a basic one, but sleeping. he’s the heaviest sleeper ever, literally sleeps 24 fuckin 7

he’ll never admit it, but he kinda likes school. not because he likes sitting around all day or listening to teachers drone on and on, it’s because usually he can talk about things. in classes he enjoys, it’s his favorite thing ever. i also see him as that one kid who literally never studies or pays attention and yet has all A’s in every class.

“Are you all ready? The boys are waiting for us at the beach” Mandy said

You guys began to make your way to the beach but as you guys got there you spotted Martin and Hamzah💕 Thats when your really started to get nervous about your swimsuit,that and the fact that there were so many other women with better bodies than you it made you nervous.

re: shirtless daniel, sometimes i wonder if he's more self conscious about his body than we think, see all the jokes about being good looking

honestly? i don't think so! i feel like there is genuinely no evidence that suggests that he might be self conscious about his looks/body image whatsoever **. i think his jokes either come from him being cheeky (bc he knows he's good looking) or it being his way of taking compliments (you can tell he gets shy sometimes). like i can't imagine someone who's very self conscious can go on live national television and make statements about how f1 is popular in american bc of his good looks. in that joking but sort of not joking way.

on a more serious note, obviously towards the end of his time in that hell hole (mclaren) he did have trouble with eating (poor appetite, noticeable weight loss etc). but even then i get a feeling that he was pretty comfortable with the body image stuff. for example this was his post race interview after ad 22, with at least 3 cameras pointing and like half the paddock's attention on him.

**update: saw @toastandvegemite's tags on this post and they kinda got me thinking!! they reminded me of an interview where daniel was asked what position he saw himself play in american football (where players are like six foot two 200 pounds on average). he stumbled a lil and said linebacker, whose players often have the leanest build. i think daniel is aware of the fact that he's not big and broad in any way. he’s certainly self-aware. but on the other hand I don’t he think he’s too self-aware. ie i don't think it's a source of self consciousness for him. like he would explain to show hosts how his sport is a "lean sport" and he would say "im pretty tiny" on dax's (i think) podcast in a non joking way. obviously these are all just observations and guesses but to me personally it doesn't feel like there is a concerning amount of self consciousness in there. The whole band, possibly independently of each other, all agreed to just lie for Ashton if anyone questioned where he was. I love the little jokes we get, but I still can’t stop thinking about Michael and Luke both going “yeah me too” when Calum says he’d already decided what he’d say if anyone asked (and it’s low key funny that Calum evidently decided gaslighting was his solution, make people question who the hell Ashton even is. People: Where’s Ashton? Calum: There’s never been an Ashton in this band, who are you talking about?)

I know no one takes the 2015 Rolling Stone article seriously, but I read that after the podcast because the Christmas shows were right after the dude that wrote it followed them around since he followed them around Michael's birthday, so around November 19 to 23 maybe, since they mention a show they did on November 22 and the first of the shows is December 1 (they did 10 holiday shows in 2015). This is something that they all had been thinking about. And the way they were all ready to take the fall for Ashton makes me even more insane because Ashton is the oldest, we all joke he's the dad of the group, but they were all like, we got you, you go is just, yk? Michael had just turned 20, Luke and Calum were still 19, they were kids dude. Ready to gaslight the shit out of their management to give Ashton his break. And they had talked about it enough for Calum, Michael, and Luke to already have a story rehearsed. That's beyond insane.
