I got goth vibes and so does my AngelOC, Elodie. So it's funny to imagine this pink boy who is secretly an emo boy in disguise next to a wednesday addams esque babe lmao. Poor boy miscalculated, I like that there was an option to be like 'Oh I like that goth style' at the cafe.

But this raises a question! Would he drop the Ren persona and aesthetic if he realized it wasn't totally necessary?

⌞♥⌝ This has been answered multiple times in the past, but yes, he'd drop the light academia aesthetic if Angel wasn't into it! ^^

However, from a game dev standpoint, it'd be extremely difficult for me to include a bunch of types and aesthetics in hopes of making Ren's appearance feel more inclusive for everyone, so it's easier for me to say, "Oh, Angel likes this one anime character" and build the lore around that.

So, for those who like Ren's real appearance and would've preferred if he introduced himself as [REDACTED] (instead of his Haruko persona), I hear you!! ^^

But please understand that if that were the case, the 14DWY storyline would be a lot less interesting and would defeat the entire purpose of Ren's motives. A big part of his characterisation is that he's more than willing to alter every part of himself to become Angel's ideal type, and if their type happened to be [REDACTED], then it'd make the buildup to his reveal in Day ??? feel far less anticlimactic.

Jōsuke "Gappy" Higashikata from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Part 8) is (dubiously) canonically intersex, and he has polyorchidism! He's stated to have four testicles; however it should be noted within the source material the reasoning for this specific variation may or may not be considered intersex depending on your interpretation. And it's also spoilers, so be warned, I suppose.

the thg fandom is unusually heteronormative. unlike other media with straight couples there's a dearth of queer fanfics or even headcanons in this fandom (the tbosas subfandom being an exception). what do you think explains this ?

there’s a couple things…but mainly I think that thg is designed for straight people. most media is, but the main relationships in thg are painfully straight in the sense that they’re obviously all straight couples, but they all uncritically pull from the constructs and gender roles and preconceived notions that heteronormative society makes us think we are supposed to find romantic and want out of a relationship. and many people do, so as a result there’s just going to be selection bias of a sort. people who find these relationships romantic and compelling are largely the ones that are going to participate in the fandom and thus uplift the straight ships. self perpetuating cycle

I think also the values and character arcs of the characters are very grounded in heteronormative society and standards, and so to have characters be queer risks making them ooc. that could definitely be a deterrent for some people. and also I’ll be honest I really don’t think straight people care about us very much, and if they do, it’s mlm ships for a variety of reasons, which are just harder to have come about in the original trilogy because Katniss is the narrator and so we see very few interactions that are just two men. (interestingly, I think Katniss is one of the few characters where there is a very viable and strong canonical case for the interpretation to be made that she’s queer. but we also know that wlw ships get brushed over a lot.)

but honestly I think it also goes hand in hand with how conservative this fandom is. there’s terfs here. there’s anti abortion people here. that’s not going to foster any sort of environment where queerness is celebrated. it’s one of the more socially conservative fandoms I’ve been in (a lot of the meta reflects this) and that’s just going to have an impact on the fanworks and hcs that come out of it. this also, incidentally, is I think why there’s a lot of black and white puritanical thinking and a lack of nuanced portrayals around some of the more complex topics within the books.

now this is definitely not to say everyone here is straight. I’m not straight obviously, a lot of my mutuals aren’t either, but we’ve kind of clustered and self segregated and I think a lot of the queer fics are coming from the same group of people. which is a very small group overall.
