Ron Pearle as King Lear: A Rambling Review, Part 1

A bunch of servants singing and dancing was not how I expected the play to open.

Then they all run away when Gloucester and Kent show up with the opening lines of the play. We seem to have a Victorian (maybe Edwardian?) style going on. 

Gloucester is chubby, which seems appropriate. 

MORE SINGING! (Though this sounds more like a church-style hymn.) 

There are two little kids, a boy and girl, who might be some sort of flower girl and ring bearer. Why are they there? Is it for Cordelia’s potential wedding? 

Lear seems slightly uninvested in what he’s saying.

Goneril and Regan are wearing fur (to make it clear they’re evil I guess). 

Goneril and Cordelia both seem to be blonde. Regan’s a brunette, though. I also like Regan’s dress the best.

I have to wonder what those two little kids are thinking about all this. It seems like it would be pretty boring to just stand there while Lear and his daughters talk on and on. 

Okay, Lear’s emoting now. Good. 

I don’t know what it is, but something about this Cordelia’s voice just bugs me. Her acting is good; it’s just the actual voice itself that bothers me. Maybe it’s because it sounds just slightly too whiny (although it’s not her fault, of course). 

When Lear starts to disown her, Cordelia falls to her hands and knees for...some reason. 

Also, Lear seems like he should be angrier while disowning her. This Lear’s talking very calmly, which almost makes him seem like more of a jerk. 

Although he might just be trying to save his voice for all the yelling and screaming he has  to do in the storm scenes. 

“So, I get to stay King, and have all the honors associated with it, but you and my daughters have to do all the work. Sounds good, right?” 

Kent is great. 

Lear just drew a sword on Kent! 

Okay, I thought that Kent was going to start doing push-ups for a second, but instead he’s just lying flat on the ground in front of Lear. Weird. 

Seriously, this Kent is the best. He should be king instead.

I’ve never wanted to punch a Lear as badly as I want to punch this one. 

Lear is just casually lounging in his throne as he insults his daughter. 

Cordelia’s reactions are great. 

Yeah, I don’t really blame Goneril and Regan for not wanting this Lear at their homes. 

Regan’s sitting down while talking to Goneril, which...fair enough, I guess. 

REALLY LOUD scene transition!

Edmund’s costume kind of blends into the background since they’re both really dark. His actor is good, though. 

Seriously, this Gloucester looks exactly like how I picture him. 

This is also the Gloucester I least want to punch. He’s like a confused teddy bear. 

I can’t decide if this Edmund is attractive or not. He’s a really good actor regardless.

Two servants made out in the background and chased each other around the stage while Edmund was giving his speech. 

Actually, I think it was Edgar who was chasing around the servant and making out with her. Weird. 

Aww, Edgar is adorable. 

He and Edgar are really convincing as brothers, not just because they look similar but also because of how they act with each other. 

I liked Edmund’s little shrug right before he walked offstage.

DRAMATIC STRING MUSIC!

Changing the male servant into a female servant makes Lear seem even more like a jerk for hitting her than the original did.

Goneril’s not wearing fur anymore. And she seemed uncharacteristically concerned about the servant who got hit. 

Lear’s knights laughing offstage confused me because I thought it was the audience, and that the audience was therefore laughing at lines that didn’t seem particularly funny. 

MORE SINGING!

Kent is still the best...and now has an inexplicable Southern accent. But he’s still awesome. Though if I were him, I wouldn’t have come back for Jerk Lear. 

Disguised Kent is even better than regular Kent. 

It looks like he shaved his head somewhat for his disguise in this version. 

DIN-NER! HEY! -King Lear

One of the knights just grabbed one of the poor serving girl’s trays and threw it across the room. No wonder they like Lear...they’re all as horrible as him. 

Gee, I wonder why Goneril is mad at Lear and his knight….

Lear imitating Oswald actually made me laugh. 

The Fool is played by a woman, but I’m not sure if the character is meant to be male or female. Regardless, she’s wearing some truly hideous pants. 

The Fool is great. And has a ukulele. And sings some of his/her speeches. 

Kent’s Southern accent is also great. This is really fun to watch. 

Lear sounds vaguely Scottish at points. 

This is the first time I think a Fool has actually made me laugh. Good job, Fool! 

Fool, that bench is not going to hide you at all. 

And now one of the knights is grabbing on to one of the poor servants. I know Goneril’s going to be a villain, but this version is really going out of its way to make it clear why Lear and his knights are so horrible to have around. Though I don’t know what her beef with the Fool is. The Fool is great. 

Lear is kind of acting like a petulant 4-year-old. 

And Goneril’s request seems completely reasonable. Again, I know she’s not actually a good person….but right now it’s REALLY hard not to be on her side. 

“You made a rational request! How dare you! I’m going to curse you horribly and insult you a whole bunch for literally no reason! I’m the best!” 

Oh, hey, Albany. Good for you for not putting up with Lear’s crappy behavior, either. 

I liked Goneril’s little “what’s he so mad about?” shrug to her husband. 

No, she doesn’t lie. We’ve been watching you and your knights act like jerks for basically the entire play. 

Kent and the Fool are great. If most of Lear’s crew were like them, I could understand why he would be angry...but they’re clearly not. 

Actually, neither Goneril nor Cordelia have done anything wrong so far. You’re just a self-centered brat. 

I like how everyone just starts trying to look at everyone BUT Lear when he starts cursing Goneril for no good reason. 

Wow, he’s really getting up into her face and shouting at her….and she actually looks a bit upset. (I would be upset, too, but this is Goneril we’re talking about.) In case you weren’t sure that he was a jerk yet.

Lear pops out of the shadows. WHA-AT? 

When did Goneril have time to dismiss all of those knights, exactly? 

Lear’s throwing a temper tantrum. 

I’m starting to think Lear just hates his kids. Or is a horrible narcissist. Or is going senile. Or possibly all three. 

Seriously, why does Goneril hate the Fool so much? He’s the LEAST annoying member of Lear’s retinue. 

Goneril also seems legitimately fond of Oswald here. Why is she more likable than Lear? Oh, right. It’s because Lear’s a senile narcissist who hates his kids. 

Though she sure is a jerk to poor Albany, who just seems really frustrated.

That letter is either full of lies, or basically says “Your sister won’t let me do whatever I want to her servants! WAAH!” 

Kent is the best. 

Now the Fool has a tambourine. And pulled some multicoloured handkerchiefs from nowhere.

Good to see Lear figured out that he was a Grade-A jerk to at least one of his daughters. 

The Lear/Fool dynamic is great. 

Not doing exactly what I want makes you ungrateful!

That recent post you reblogged really sheds some light on what's happened to modern media/fandoms. Their argument, to paraphrase, is "media only writes kind women because they don't want to alienate men. I can't imagine the idea that some people actually want kindness rewarded and cruelty punished on principle, because I personally like mean and cruel people, so I think creators/other fans should worship them as well!" No wonder the ML fandom worships Chloe if morality is based only on "I like."

Is this about this post, anon? Because if it is I just don’t see your point.

The post was about how women tend to be stuck in a box where they have to be non-threatening as possible to the male audience and they end up falling flat because they don’t really have any flaws (or they aren’t well addressed at all). OP wasn’t saying that we should be apologists or anything, just that women should be better written (and, as someone who watches shounen, I agree). Women aren’t allowed to be mean or bitchy because they wouldn’t be a fan favorite. Can you imagine a girl with a personality and background like Bakugou’s in bnha being number one on popularity polls? I’m struggling to. It doesn’t have anything to do with the narrative rewarding cruelty for female characters.

The post was about shounen (and honestly, the only heroine that’s not constantly sexualized and is kinda bitchy and bossy and rude while maintaining their popularity that I can think of is Rukia, my beloved, from Bleach), but since I’m lowkey a ML blog, I’m gonna talk about cartoon exemples:

Helga Pataki from Hey Arnold is a staple for mean, rude, bitchy girls. She’s sympathetic and we understand her, even more after the “Helga on The Couch” episodes, but the narrative rarely excuses her actions. When she popularized a newspaper with fake news? She was punished for it. When she told Arnold off for helping the gang with their problems? She was punished for it. When she stole Arnold’s hat for her weird shrine? She was punished for it. The characters, while tolerating her meanness, don’t shy away from taking revenge when they can or dismissing Helga’s (sometimes) good advice for her attitude. She’s a flawed and deep character and the fans adore her because she’s well-written and compelling.

Gaz from Invader Zim isn’t as much of a main character in her show as Helga is in hers, but god, is she a fan favorite. She is mean and stoic and a bit sadistic and none of that detracts from her character. Sure, she’s from Invader Zim from all shows, being unusually mean is a given, but I do appreciate how for all the characters to soften up the grim dark atmosphere of the show (and still fitting very well in it), they didn’t go with making the girl a sweet character, they went with Gir, the robot dog. Even in Florpus, where her character is a little nicer, she’s still very mean and I like it! Sure, she’s never punished for being mean, but who actually is in Invader Zim? No double standards here, at least. (Also, Game Slave 2 slaps, one of the best episodes from the show).

Even Chloé herself! I like that she’s mean and spoiled and annoying, I like her arc in the show and her relationship with other people. The only thing I don’t like is people acting like she’s way less mean than she is or that her actions were not as serious as they were. Nobody cares if you like a mean character, just own it up and when people say “oh, but they are-” just answer with a “I know that, I don’t think they’re right, I just like the character”. I like Lila as a character too and you don’t see me going around defending her actions.

I can even apply the part of the post where they talk about the hype around characters with zero personality to the ML fandom while setting the girls aside. You-know-who barely has any well developed personality before season 4 and is praised for being a great character and superior love interest. Kagami, meanwhile, gets bashed for breathing. I do think that part of it relates to what I was talking about in the above: Kagami isn’t “bitchy” nor “mean”, but she’s blunt and her personality isn’t as accommodating as, say, Rose or Marinette. She’s a bit stoic and has a hard time connecting with people and comes off as rude at times, but is overall a wonderful girl and people still bash her for things like “Frozer” and “Oni-chan” (even though she was akumatized) and, more recently, “Lies”. Ask me if Luka got half that flack for “Wishmaker”.

(Plus, there were a lot of Félix apologists around even though he tried to assault our protagonist but it’s fine because “Chat Noir does it all the time” (?????) and “Félix is not that bad, he’s suffering too.” I’m not joking, the lengths people will go for white male characters while villainizing girls of color, like Alya and Kagami, still astounds me.)

A prompt for @sunnymelonpan as a thank you for adapting one of my writing prompts into a full-fledged, 12-part comic! She did an amazing job, and I absolutely adore her art. Check her out.

For this one-shot, she requested a sickfic involving Zim and Dib in college. Zim goes to school while running a fever, and it culminates in him passing out right in front of Dib.

The story will be under the cut. I’ll give Sunny the honor of naming this fic (and it’s totally not because I can’t think of a name for it for the life of me).

Characters: Dib, Zim, GIR, Computer

Warnings: Typical “sick person” stuff, I guess. Fainting, vomiting (nongraphic), fever, chills.

Something was off about Zim. Dib sensed it pretty early on, but it took a while for him to grow genuinely concerned. When he’d seen Zim outside the library on Monday, he instantly took notice of how tired he looked. Uncharacteristically so. His face was wane, dark undereye circles standing out against the pale skin.

It only seemed to get worse as the week went on. For the next few days, Zim walked right past him on campus without so much as raising his head or saying hello. He looked slow. Unsteady.

Ever since they’d begun school at the public university in their town, they had both been rather busy. They normally made efforts to at least acknowledge one another, though.

Now, early Thursday morning, Dib thought he would make a conscious effort to catch Zim after class and find out what was wrong. Both had classes in the engineering building, and Dib managed to duck out of his early to wait for him. He parked himself on the bench outside the double doors to Zim’s lecture hall, watching as throngs of students exited at the top of the hour.

He was started to get antsy when he didn’t see Zim among them. Once the little faux invader finally shuffled out, he did a double take. He almost didn’t recognize him.

Aside from looking even more exhausted than before, what made him stand out was the bright yellow sweatshirt he was wearing. The abbreviated name of their university was printed in bold black letters on the front. Zim never wore anything but his perfunctory military uniform. Even during their high school graduation last spring, it had been on beneath his cap and gown, and he’d quickly shed the gown as soon as he’d shaken hands and gotten his diploma. Why was he switching things up now? Sudden burst of school spirit? Not likely. Zim had made it very clear that the only reason he was continuing on with his education was to “learn more about the indigenous species on this hideous dirtball.”  

He trudged right past Dib, looking down at the ground. The price tag from the university bookstore poked out from the back of the hoodie.

“Hey!” Dib called, standing up and waving his hands exaggeratedly.

Zim’s eyes flicked up blearily.

“Hey, Zim what’s—” The words died on his lips immediately.

He looked awful.

His skin was an ashen gray-green, and a sheen of sweat covered his entire face. Tendrils of black hair from his wig were stuck to his forehead, and Dib swore he could see the outline of a single black antenna trying to escape from underneath it.

“Zim? Are you okay?”

Zim opened his mouth, then swayed a bit on his feet. “Heh? Yeah. I just… I just…”

He stumbled backwards. His eyes rolled back into his head, and his legs crumpled beneath him.

Dib swore loudly, then lunged forward to catch him before he could hit the ground.

It took a disconcertingly long time for Zim to come around. Long enough for Dib to carry him up to his dorm room and pace around with his phone in his hands, debating on calling GIR, or even his sister.

He had gotten as far as pulling up the number for the base’s landline when he heard a weak groan from the other side of the room.

“Zim?”

Over on the unmade bed where he had been deposited, he was beginning to stir. Dib stood over him, watching as his eyes fluttered open.

Zim looked peaceful for all of two seconds before a strange sort of urgency came over him. He flew up into a sitting position, hand pressed against his mouth.

Dib’s eyes widened. By some stroke of unimaginable luck and quick thinking, he dove for the garbage can next to his desk and shoved it under Zim’s chin just in time for him to be sick.

Zim retched violently, his tiny body quaking inside his oversized hoodie. After a few minutes, it tapered off to groans, then he went quiet.

“Are you done?” Dib asked.

“Uh huh.” He thumped back against the bed. He still looked nauseous and his eyes were watering near the edges.

Dib placed the trash bin in the bathroom and returned to his side. “What’s going on? Are you sick? You’ve been acting weird all week.”

Without giving him time to answer, he placed a hand on Zim’s forehead, eyebrows raising at how hot he felt. “You’re burning up.”

Zim groaned and tried to turn his head away. “Not sick. Irken elites don’t get sick.”

Something about the way he said it made Dib feel as though it had been rehearsed several times before.

He sighed and glanced back down at his phone, turning it over in his hands. His thumb pressed down on the little green call button and he held it up to his ear as it rang.

Just as he’d hoped, GIR’s trilling little voice surfaced after the third ring “Helloooooo?”

“Hey, GIR. I’m here with your stupid master. He just passed out in the hall after second period and—”

“—I TOLD HIM!”

Dib winced and held the phone back a few inches.  

“I told him not to go to school!” GIR shouted again. “I knew this would happen!” He dissolved into wailing sobs on the other end.

“Ummm…” A voice piped up in the background. Dib immediately recognized it as the computer’s. “I told him not to go to school. You told him to pick up a Suck Monkey at the 7-Eleven after he finished classes.”

“Oh yeaaaaahhhh,” GIR said, sounding perfectly cheery again.

Dib sighed. That made more sense. “GIR, tell the computer I’m taking Zim home. He’s running a fever and can’t even stand up.”

He flicked his eyes towards Zim, who was shivering miserably on his side with his back to Dib. His wig had flopped off and was lying on the pillow like some sort of sodden, dead animal.

“Okie dokie!” GIR said.

Dib hung up and walked back over to the lump on his bed.

“Alright. Let’s go.” He pulled the hood of Zim’s sweatshirt over his head to cover his antennae. “Why did you buy this, anyway?” he asked, tugging at the strings of the hoodie.

“Cold,” he murmured into the mattress.

When Dib tried to pick him up, Zim’s muscles went rigid. “I’m fine.”

Dib laughed once. “Sure you are. Tell me all about how great you’re doing. Go ahead and stand up for me.”

Zim looked as if he were going to try, then went limp again with a frustrated grunt. His face turned to shoot Dib a half-hearted glare.

“That’s what I thought.” Dib gently lifted him off the bed. “Come on. Let’s go back to your house. I’ll put on a movie and make you some soup or something.”

Zim grimaced into Dib’s chest as he carried him out of the dorm room. “I hate you.”

“Uh huh. At least I’m not going to make you walk into 7-Eleven to get GIR’s Suck Monkey.”

Zim grumbled all the way down the hall and to the elevator, clutching the edges of Dib’s trench coat and awkwardly trying to wrap it around himself for warmth.

Dib managed to pry his claws off him once they got to his car, which only earned him more half-coherent insults. He buckled Zim into the passenger seat and heaved out a heavy sigh as he walked around to the driver’s side.

It was going to be a long day.

frigid air (fic commentary)

literally no one asked for this but hello! hi! if you didn’t know, i wrote a 11 chapter fic called ‘frigid air’ a few weeks back. the fic started as jayhoon centric, but it kinda got off the rails from there hehe

the birth of the idea

so the bri from a few weeks ago was already thinking about writing a lengthy enha au. 

i just finished writing a jakehoon one shot and wanted to try my hand at writing another ship! at first, i thought of typical au ideas that were college themed. those are the most fun to write and read imo, bc it’s so grounded in reality. and also bc the jakehoon one shot i wrote was a lot heavier and angsty, which was something i think i’m better at doing! there’s this really great fic i read that inspired me to try my hand at some lighter themes! 

after reading that au, i was like “hmmmm im gonna try writing some romcom type of stuff.” i always ALWAYS write angst, so this was a really nice and fun change! 

yes, back to the college au ideas. i then began to think about what majors the enha kids would do if they went to college. my notes for the first outline kind of went like this: 

Jay - fashion major, new addition to the dorm, is rich but doesnt want anyone to know, is kind despite being taken advantage of in his hometown, just wants a normal family 

Heeseung - music production major, has a soundcloud lowkey but doesn't let anyone know, is going thru his first real heartbreak and is using music to deal with it 

Jungwon - hasnt decided on a major, came to uni w a full ride taekwondo scholarship, secret boyfriend, coming to terms w sexuality 

Jake - australian exchange student, architecture major, maybe gets a weird stalker? 

Sunoo - beauty school, wants to be a hairstylist, kinda eccentric, knows everyone’s business

Sunghoon - figure skater, doesnt go to school, is close to getting on the national team, lives in a dorm to avoid his tiger parents, softspot for his younger sister

Niki - dance major from japan, is a little too clingy, feels lonely away from his family 

in hindsight, the characters here seem a lot more deeper and fleshed out as compared to what i ended up writing, but i realized that if i kept all of this in - it would’ve been really overwhelming for the reader. i had to remind myself that this was a jayhoon centric fic LMAOOOOO 

after writing this, i was like “WAITTTT A HOT SEC” this sounds a lot like hello my twenties! which btw, is an amazing show on netflix that you should definitely watch. i watched this show with my girlfriend and man, the way it handled all of the a,b,c, etc plots was so fantastic. 

every character had their own stories and that’s what i loved. usually in fics or aus, a lot of the side characters sort of fade into the background. they also do this thing where their main reason for existence is to lift the mc or main ship up in the story. i wanted to avoid that, so taking inspo from hello my 20s, i decided to give every character a story. whether it be something big like sunoo’s stalker or something small like heejake’s and jungniel’s development, i wanted to give them all something to tell. in hello my 20s, each of the girs living in that house had their own unique stories that fit them really well. whether i did it as well as the writers of the show - that’s something else to unpack, right? 

the characters and their developments 

so this is something i’m not sure if i did well in or not. the original plot was to have jay and sunghoon not get along at all. with jay’s abrasiveness and sunghoon’s surface coolness, i thought it would be fun to see them butt heads. but i realized that it wasn’t so realistic because they don’t really see each other enough to butt heads that much. i thought making sunghoon shy and reserved (thus standoffish) while jay tries his best to make sunghoon open up was a lot more cuter. 

jay is a lot more bold in this, even through his embarassing moments. he’s self-assured, determined and open to pretty much anything. he’s generous and friendly. the only weakness jay has is he’s too presumptious sometimes and assumes stuff without any real basis, as seen with him assuming that ryujin and sunghoon were dating bc of a passing remark from jake and some yt comments. i gave him a dead dad at the end of the fic bc hello we’re projecting but also to explain why he’s super close to his mum and why he’s just a tad bit behind everyone else his age. i wanted to expand on this a little but sadly, i kinda ran out of words to talk about this. if you know what i mean. tbh, jay doesn’t have much of a development in this. that’s something i really want to improve on in my next au, giving my mc some actual development instead of getting carried away with other side characters. 

sunghoon is, as i said, shy and reserved. he has a lil trauma from being rejected by seon years ago. you can tell that his experience was not pleasant at all - so he keeps feelings of attraction and want farrrrrr away from him. sunghoon is sorry he’s an anti-romantic, if you will. throughout this fic, you see him open up to jay and realize that not every guy he’s attracted to will reject him painfully. he also learns that he doesn’t need to keep people at an arms length away and that opening himself up to more people will bring about very nice things! very cliche but hey, it iz what it iz. 

jungwon was a fun one to write! not bc i feel a little of what he feels, but bc he’s adorable with daniel and having him be unsure was fun to write. jungwon is pretty self-assured in this fic, but with daniel, he’s not really sure what he’s doing. 

heeseung feels secure enough with jake that he’s willing to sing in front of him, which is something he doesn’t do. jake is very naive about relationships and hee’s feelings for him, but heeseung kind of brings him down back to reality with the scene from han river. heeseung is getting over a breakup and that stuff takes a while, so that’s why i didn’t let them get together too fast. hee knows how jake feels about him and he doesn’t want to ruin it by jumping into things so fast. 

sunoo is super friendly and too trusting with people, which is both a blessing and a curse. niki and him have been attached to the hip since their friendship started and niki sees sunoo as a very very dear friend to him. bc who else lets him sleep in his bed and who else buys him taiyaki everyday? that’s right, it’s his sunoo hyung. sunoo also cares for niki a lot and they’re just very sweet. 

what i did well and what i didn’t 

okay this is debatable, but i did like how i wrote the developing relationships in this, mostly the ones that weren’t the main jayhoon arc. i liked the way i wrote jungwon and daniel’s little friction and i loved heejake’s confession scene. 

the humour in this was a little weak for me, but it was my first attempt at writing it so it’s forgivable. 

i just wished i wrote the main relationship better. i feel like it took a while at the beginning and suddenly went from 49 to 27403 real quick. if i were to rewrite it, i’d give them a lot more time to pine as that stage before friends and maybe insert more conflict. 

i’d give jay a stronger conflict other than trying to befriend with sunghoon. his character felt very 1d for me and i didn’t like that. i needed to develop him more tbh LMAOOO

Ya they would probably met! I think everyone would love the archetype especially Gir haha! Raz would also like Gir but Zim would probably be annoyed with Raz’s archetype since he’s so gir-ish. Also Raz would find out Zim is trying to take over the earth (emphasis on the trying lol) and try to fight him—

For overarching villain, I didn’t really have a set one but I was thinking maybe the condesce if I didn’t just end up making one up lmao. I feel like she fits the best and provides enough of a challenge to where they would need all of the important characters in the au’s help to actually defeat her, and she wants to take over the earth so she has motivation lol. And for loboto I’d definitely include him! I adore him too but he’d probably end up being a bit of a background character, but still there!

One thing I wanted to add from the last post that I forgot is that Xefros would be scared of all the adults, Dammek too but more in a mean/defensive/untrustworthy kinda way. They probably trust Roxy thought having known her the longest, and would warm up to a few of the other adults in the au too haha.

Top 5 Zims in the Zimvoid

After seeing Stella/Krizland do her top five Zims, I may as well do so myself. Note that I barely hate ANY Zims whatsoever for those who’s favorites are lower. If anything, I doubt there such a thing a “most hated Zim” since I LOVE every single one of them. In my viewpoint, when I say “top 5 Zims”, it would mostly be the ones that I love them to the point where I think,draw, mention them....ALOT. And note that I will be counting down from #5 through #1 so nobody gets confused.

So without further ado, let’s get started:

Number 5: Number 1

This character might be THEE BEST antagonist Invader Zim comic has ever made. Not only because of how threatening he is and look, but because of his background and his motivation.

As far as we know, as I post this, Number 1 is the most mysterious character in the arc. So much so that make fans create tons of theories about him. And the more we learn about him, the bigger the theories get. The more we learn about him, the more interesting he becomes. He’s not only a villain, but very likely a victim, as his condition is horrifying beyond any Zim and Dibs’ imagination. Whatever his motivation is, you can get a sense that it’s not good. There’s just a vibe to him makes you both scared of him yet pity him.

If this is what Sam is aiming for, than he knows damn well how to make a great villain.

ISSUE 49 UPDATE: I take it back. He’s not a victim. He’s just straight up evil and insane.

Number 4: Number 2

I always imagined what the Number 2 Zim would look like before we were introduced to him. And let me just say that once they finally revealed him, I was not disappointed whatsoever. Sure I sort of expected him to be this huge and scary bodyguard of Number 1. But I think that’s what I love about him. That it turns out he’s really not. In fact that’s what I love about 1 and 2’s appearance. They don’t NEED to look too threatening in order to make them good antagonists.

Number 2 is an average looking Zim in which his only difference is that he is taller than our own Zim and wears a purple cloak that is suppose to be a mixed representation of a monk and an assassin. Which very well represents his connection to the Elite Zims’ ego. In fact he has both the representation of a worshipper/follower AND a lead soldier. Followed with him often calling the Elites his “brothers” as well as giving them extremely strict physical training. It doesn’t help that he is pretty much plays the role of Number 1’s eyes outside of his room, given he makes sure the elite’s system is stabled.

As of right now, we don’t know yet if he knows of Number 1’s true identity. But one thing is for sure is that he will do ANYTHING to please the leader so that he can become a powerful Zim as him.

Number 3: The Elder

I don’t know why, but I love him. There’s a thing about him that gives him the teacher/father/grandfather figure kind of character. And the fact he’s one of the first Zim to enter the Zimvoid and that he is responsible for forming the Resistance makes him more interesting. I would REALLY love to see if he has an interesting backstory. Like...the WHOLE story of his experiences in the Zimvoid.

If they don’t do that than hell! I can make one myself!

Also, I can expect him being the type of grandfather figure that cares for each one of his members (specifically 2K and Palindrome) who would like bugging them or tricking them just so they can learn a lesson as well as playing around with them. I don’t know, I just love those types of teachers/parents.

Number 2: 2K (Number 2000)

Ok. Go ahead. Bonk me. This was honestly the toughest thing to decide though. Yes, he’s baby. And don’t we all love babies. But it’s not the only reason he made it this high on the list. I think there’s more to that. Like...Sam could have honestly made 2K just a whiny and helpless infant who wants nothing more but attention like...a typical baby would do. And I wouldn’t mind whatsoever if Sam went this route.

But when you are going to make him the major character of this arc, he needs to have a PURPOSE on being a major character. Therefore, Sam was able to successfully do this by making him sort of the lead of the Resistance. Ok, I wouldn’t really call him the leader (even though he kind of is), given its already stated the Resistance has more than one leader. So I would more likely say he plays as the navigator of the gang. As well as the one who encourages the Resistance to give out their full strength in order for every Zim to succeed in taking down Number 1 and getting back home.

I also love how his character is more detailed with the fact that he is still a ZIM regardless of being a baby. This is proven with the fact he always tries to stay self-confident. Along with the fact that he’s willing to prove someone, including a Dib, that he can still be a good competitor despite his fragile looking appearance, which makes him different from his partner Palindrome.

I guess his only flaw to his character would be his....selfishness? Yes, I’m aware he is a Zim. But I still find it odd that one issue, he’s willing to join a fight and then in the next one, he decides to just hide behind the door while the rest of the Resistance are fighting. Maybe it’s a huge war he can’t handle? Who knows.

Regardless, I can’t hate him for that because of how well detailed his character is. I think his interaction with Palindrome is what also makes him a great character. I don’t think either of them would have been a great character without them being together.

Honorable mentions

Number 100/2004/Big Zim: honestly, i can’t imagine that they would make a character from going threatening looking to someone who is just a sensitive and lovable muscular teddy bear. I just...I love him. Just...protect him at all cost.

Number 500: I honestly love that they made a Zim that is sort of a bookworm. It just would have been a little nice if we learned more about him but I can see myself reading a good fanfiction about him if someone does so.

Number 501: he’s sort of like Number 2 which is why I loved him so much before 2 entered the picture. I always see him as the one in charge of the guard and I could sort of see him playing the antagonist role in issue 46-47.

Number 1: Palindrome (Number 2002)

He is not JUST an older brother figure to 2K. He is THE EMBODIMENT of a older brother AND parental figure (mostly towards a Gir in my opinion). It’s also surprising that out of all the Zims we seen, he is the one who acts the least like....A Zim.

Like...it’s funny. Just like every Zim, he is attempting to conquer Earth and has his Dib as an enemy. And yet, he’s almost the complete opposite of our Zim.

He’s very quite, he not too confident (note the times he complained about his water, missing previous experiences/encounters etc.). And one thing. ONE important thing that makes him the complete opposite of a Zim is that he BARELY hides his EMPATHY.

As far as we know, OUR Zim would BARELY EVER show a sense of empathy. Examples like showing any sense of emotions towards his Gir (yes we have seen him show a sense of empathy to Gir few times. But he’s able to hide it to the point that it’s barely recognizable). Palindrome straight up gave a heartfelt and happy expression towards Gir for TWO panels (even excitedly and happily saying hi to Gir) before trying to brush it off by saying he didn’t miss him whatsoever....which in my opinion I totally doubt it after the reaction he just made a second ago. 2K, Our Zim, and all the other Zims barely showed any reaction towards Gir’s presence whatsoever.

And one thing our Zim would never do is to comfort someone or show a sense of lending a helping hand (you saw him abandoned people in trouble multiple times without hestitation as far as I know). The moment Pal saw a Zim crying, he went up to him to share the feelings he was going through as well as show a sense of comfort at the same time.

I think that’s what makes me love Palindrome so much. It’s not that he’s NOT a Zim. He’s a Zim but in a completely different manner. And he might kindest and calmest Zim were EVER gonna get. Not to mention....he’s adorable. He’s straight up a fish in a scuba-diving suit. If I were to imagine the kind of Zim I would create, Palindrome would be the closest to it next to 2K. Both him and his partner...they are perfect. They’re design is just perfection.

- “....” you were speechless, the way he looked at you gave you mixed emotions. He looked so intimidating, yet..so ethereally handsome. I mean how ironic is this, your art teacher is actually an art himself.

- “And your name is?” he said in his deep voice. “I-..Um..the first name on the list..” you stuttered, still in shock. “Ah, take a seat please” he said calmly. 

- You could hear angels singing quietly in the background as he was talking. His aura and presence in the room was so strong and powerful, yet so celestial.

- “Before we start, I am obligated to give you an object or a person to draw (he then looks at you), BUT the person you were supposed to sketch today cancelled last minute so (he then started walking towards you slowly, looking deep into your eyes) since mr/s. y/n was late, s/he should be our model for today” he said smiling a little, pointing to where you’ll have to sit for the next 3 hours..

- “I..will have to pass on this because-” you blurted out, panicking by the attention of everyone. “That’s what you get for being late” he said, still pointing to make you give up and get up..

- “WHY AM I NOT SURPRISED he’s so attractive of course he’d be rude..” you were screaming inside of your head. “Remember, if you feel tired you could stretch your body but have to go back to the same position!” he said firmly. “Well how about you take a picture of me then we all can just draw..me..!” you said back, lowkey mad at him.

- “I will take a picture, to make sure that you keep the pose..but you’re still gonna sit here for 3 hours!” he said, almost challenging you to argue back but...you kept it cool..for now at least..sat down and did the pose he was showing you. 

- “Good gir/boyl” he winked. Your eyes got wider, is he really allowed to do that? Did anyone see that? You had to sit there and take whatever he put you into without moving an inch or making the slightest noise. 

- You were getting really uncomfortable by the way he was staring at you for almost 10 minute straight. He then picked up few brushes, then start drawing something. You didn’t give it much attention because you were focused on the pain that was building inside your muscles for staying in the same position for too long.

- Your eyes were closed by the end of class because you were just too tired. The noise when others were leaving the classroom woke you up but it took you a minute to understand that class was finally over. He walked up to you, hands in his pockets, half smiling then said “You can move now”.

- “Ahhh..” you were stretching out, completely oblivious to the fact that you’re slightly moaning. He didn’t move an inch, he wasn’t blinking nor breathing either, just watching you finish stretching. 

- By the time you finished you felt that something was off, he didn’t move or look anywhere else the entire time. “Is..is there something..wrong” you said quietly, kinda afraid of what he’d do next. He stepped closer, you can feel his breathing on the upper side of your face. “You did that on purpose didn’t you?” he sounded daring. 

- “What are you talking about? You did THAT on purpose you made me sit here for almost 3 hours just because I was 2 minutes late..that literally don’t make any sense” you yelled out then finally took a breath to try to stay calm. “You’re really as innocent as you look huh..adorable” he smiled at you, taking your hand in his gently to walk you over to his canvas then turning it so you could see what he was intensely focused on the entire lesson. 

- “That’s...me..and it’s really beautiful..how did-” you were stuttering, still trying to take in the drawing he made of you. He was looking at the drawing too then suddenly said, “First of all, I apologize for making you sit here that long but..I couldn’t help noticing how beautiful and astonishing you look right when you entered the classroom. Second you were not late, in fact, we started early because I thought everyone had arrived, but I had to improvise because I wanted to draw you so bad..”.

- “I..am speechless.. I don’t know what to say..” you said still stuttering and surprised. “You can say yes to dinner with me so I get to look at you more, maybe so much more that I won’t make up other excuses to make you the model and suffer again...” he said and looked at you waiting for an answer.

- “You’re not giving me much choice are you...well fine..I guess you can stare at me whenever you want to BUT I want you to forget I exist when we’re here in class” you raised a finger at him, almost threatening him which made him smile even more. “I think it’ll be hard to not look at you in class but if you go out with me..I’ll try to get my daily dose of you before class and hope it’ll last me till class is finished” he said raising his eyebrows. You shook his hands and said “DEAL”.

- Few weeks passed by and every single class you had with him was.... a total mess. He was trying so hard to forget that you were in there which led him to make things very awkward, resulting in him hiding behind the canvas and giggling then looking at you trying not to laugh at him.

OH BOY IM BAD AT EXPLAINING BUT I’LL TRY:

LSOH: Seymour Krelborn, a guy who has lived his entire life being poor, purchases a plant that he names after his co-worker and love interest. She’s called Audrey, so he calls the plant Audrey II! However… the plant feeds on blood, and to make things worse, this plant is a new species that nobody has ever seen before, leading to a lot of media coverage, success and wealth. As the plant gets bigger… Seymour has to go from just cutting his hand to feed Twoey, to murdering people. It’s a great movie, however the 2003 broadway cast recording is SUPER good and you should listen to it if you have time!

IZ: Zim is an alien invader from planet Irk. He’s very bad at his job and everyone hates him because their species values height above everything else and Zim is very short. So his leaders, the almighty tallests, send him and a malfunctioning robot named Gir on a ‘mission’ to earth, hoping he’d get lost and die along the way. He doesn’t die though and successfully makes it to earth, setting up a base and getting terrible disguises for him and his robot. Gir is disguised as a dog, meanwhile Zim is disguised as a 12 year old because he’s short. Nobody sees through their awful disguises except two people:Dib Membrane, and his sister, Gaz. Gaz doesn’t care that Zim is an alien and only really cares about videogames and pizza. The only person she doesn’t hate is her dad, and her brother, as that gets cleared up in the movie. 

Dib, however, is OBSESSED with exposing Zim as an alien, and he really wants to have him dissected, too. This leads to.. a lot of problems, especially since everyone else thinks that Zim is just a normal earth boy with a skin condition.

It’s a good show, and a movie came out on August 16th, 2019. The movie wasn’t quite as good as the original show, but I still absolutely loved it! There’s also an ongoing comic series as well as talk about potentially bringing IZ back for a reboot on Netflix.

✨:LSOH: I think I’m drawn to it for several reasons! I love the music, and I also ADORE Twoey. I think he’s a very cute and interestingly designed character. (I see Twoey as a guy). I also loved seeing bad people get what they deserved.

IZ: The artstyle is nice - it’s a wonderful mix of cute and grotesque. The background characters are ALL uniquely designed. The voice acting is excellent ESPECIALLY for Zim. The characters are so… loveable, to me atleast. I find Dib to be really relatable, especially since he shows lots of signs of being autistic (to me atleast). I also find the entire Irken species to be very interesting, as well as the others in the show! (vortians and meekrob). I could go on for hours abt this show but I’ll stop here!

So I Just Watched... Invader Zim Enter the Florpus

So I just watched Invader Zim Enter the Florpus and I have somethings to say. As always Invader Zim is something that I love it was a show I grew up watching and hell I even own a box set of every episode. I used to watch Zim all the time when I was a kid the dark humor and creepy art really set a tone for all the things I like now as an adult to the point it molded my sense of humor for the rest of my life so as you can tell when the show ended in 2006 little me was pretty upset. Imagine my surprise when 13 years later I was told Zim was back and with a damn movie!!!! Boy oh boy I was excited and when it finally came out I thought it was well not great, not bad it was just okay. First off the movies art style is similar to the original show but looked a whole lot cleaner and all round less creepy which isn’t so much a bad thing but it was a tiny bit strange it did take me a while to get used to like I said the old art style was gross and disgusting but it helped the show by making you not want to look sometimes while at the same time being utterly hilarious but at the same time the new style was stunning to look at the lines were smooth and nice too look at and some of the backgrounds looked amazing plus there were some gross moments too. All the charcters we all love looked just as gross, creepy, weird and sometimes adorable as they always have except Gaz she looked very strange she wasnt as scary as she was before she was small and cute which didnt fit her character at all hell I even said I would by a plushie of her if I could but more on her later. However if you are wondering yes Gir hasn’t like at all. I won’t go into the story because I want all of you to go watch it yourselves so instead lets talk characters. Not a single one of them has changed and my god its perfect. Zim is just as insane, stupid and is the small green Irken invader of pure evil and destruction you know and love. Dib is still ugly when he lies but now has a new shirt and Gaz is where I have some issues. The Gaz I remember was violent and angry she hated everything and everyone she was a loner and happy about it so long as she had some games to play, she never showed any emotion other than anger and had a very monotone voice but here she is super diffrenet, she is emotional and seems like she is a totaly different character. This might not be a bad thing but it didnt feel right and it seems like they only did it because they needed something to help the plot but wanted to rely on a fan favourite character and Gaz was the only one they could think of but it doesnt feel like Gaz she is too emotional dont get me wrong she has her badass moments but it feels forced. The final issue I had was the run time the full thing is just over an hour long and for a movie thats not a huge ammount of time, everything moves so fast it feels like there is no struggle or tention it all everything just sort of happens then before you know it credits. In the end Enter the Florpus was a fun movie and I highly recommend everyone goes to watch it. Hopefully Zim is back in action and we can expect to see more of him soon. Now if you will excuse me i need to call The Tallest.
