midnight society

we named our coven the midnight

society, a handful of sophomores

and I filled a picnic table adjacent to

the dionysian energy of the girls dorm.

the first night was simple astrology.

samantha, who was such a virgo,

promised to bring a ouija board

if we were ready for the next level.

i learned necromancy bit by bit

and then all at once. we asked

what’s your name and slid the

planchette around: R-O-D-G-E-R.

woah, i said.

woah, this time elizabeth, who told

me rodger was a student (he wasn’t) who

shot himself in the cafeteria (he didn’t).

we met every tuesday under moonlight

and nothing truly magical ever happened.
