Kitchen Mouse, 4503 N Figueroa St., Los Angeles (Montecito Heights), CA 90065
Tumblr media
Kitchen Mouse has expanded again, with a cute walk-up coffee & bakery spot in Montecito Heights (near Mount Washington and south Highland Park). There is a small kitchen, so you can also order off a limited menu: vegan breakfast sandwich, vegan waffles, bagel sandwiches, and fancy toasts. The pastry case had two shelves of gluten-free pastries (muffins, brownies, cookies, scones, cakes) and two shelves of pastries with gluten (vegan bagels, vegan croissants, danish). There’s also drip coffee, cold brew, espresso drinks, tea, and hot chocolate.
Order at the window and pay first. Prices are on the higher side but they do make their own pastries and their own schmears, and offer lots of gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, and even nut-free options.
Buckwheat waffle, vegan, gluten-free ($9) with Earl Grey whip ($1.50): A thick, Belgian style waffle with vegan butter and real maple syrup. Excellent – I didn’t miss the gluten. The buckwheat waffle (made with buckwheat, oat, corn flour and flax, maple & coconut oil) has a nutty flavor and the waffle was moist with crisp edges. They provided plenty of vegan Earl Grey whip which did taste like Earl Grey and wasn’t too sweet. The waffle took about 15 minutes and they weren’t busy.
Cappuccino ($5): No foam art, strong and very bitter, wouldn’t get again
This is meant to be a takeout spot though there are three outdoor picnic tables (shared with Taco Fiesta?). They also sell some KM merch and coffee beans. They have their own coffee roast (Ethiopian). Parking was easy to find in the strip mall.
4 out of 5 stars

Breadblok, 1529 Griffith Park Blvd, Los Angeles (Silver Lake), CA 90026, Score: 43/50
Tumblr media
Breadblok’s mission is to make the best gluten-free baked goods, using the finest ingredients. Everything they make is also organic, free of soy, gums and refined sugar. If you follow some type of special diet, this place is for you (vegan, gluten-free, Keto, egg-free, nut-free). It’s also gorgeous with amazing service. It seems like the perfect camping spot but I only saw one other camper.
Score: 43/50
Food: 5/5 – Everything is organic and gluten-free, so it’s going to taste a little different, but still good.   There’s a lot more than bread and pastries (whole loaves, croissants, donuts, muffins, tarts, cakes, scones). They also have a food menu (soup, toast, sandwiches, tartines, quiche, salads), coffee & espresso drinks, wine, and grab & go drinks, salads, overnight oats and yogurt parfaits.
Coffee: 4/5 – Expect all your usual coffee and espresso drinks. The coffee is organic. The cappuccino was bitter but had nice foam art.
Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, unlimited, ask for the password.
Ambiance: 5/5 – Natural, Scandi style with light woods. Only one small table and a counter inside. Beautiful & upscale.
Noise: 4/5 – Quiet, good for campers, music is relaxing. Some conversations. Not much traffic driving by.
Plugs: 1/5 – There was one inside
Parking: 4/5 – Busy area but if you can walk, you’ll probably find residential parking to park for free and for as long as you want, a block or two away.
Comfort: 5/5 – Padded chairs, mostly two top tables and one large communal table. Some padded seating, some metal chairs. Shade provided! Might be cold if you come on a rare cold day (did not see heat lamps). There isn’t a ton of seating but most people take it to go.
Bathroom: 5/5 – Two restrooms, accessible from the patio. Stylish but also used for storage.
Art: 5/5 – Didn’t see any but what a beautiful space.
Tips: Order at the counter. They’ll give you a number and bring your food to you. They sell some merch like their shirts, organic coffee (roasted for them) and housemade crackers.

Gluten free puff pastry
Recently found this recipe for puff pastry, and knew I had to try it: https://theloopywhisk.com/2022/10/22/gluten-free-puff-pastry/ Did some tweaking and ended up with a pretty good result :)
Mix until wet sand consistency:
2 cups gluten free flour (schär type B) ½ tbsp caster sugar ½ tsp salt 40 g (3 tbsp) cold salted butter, cubed I used my pastry cutter, but you could use a blender or your fingers.
Add and toss with a fork:
120 g cold salted butter, sliced. I used a cheese slicer.
Add and toss, 2 tbs at a time:
1 dl water, iced or very cold
Form into ball, gently Put in plastic bag, roll out into square and chill for 30 mins minimum Laminate using 2 letter folds Chill again 30 mins minimum Use as you like
Bake at 200C until golden and crisp :)

I attempted baking my own poptarts from scratch over weekend, using Gluten Free dough and homemade jams and jellies.

Tonight's plan in the works: a quichey-type pie with "they can't legally call it feta", frozen spinach that I just put out to thaw because there was time, and a package of frozen puff pastry also set out to thaw.
We've been getting a variety of those big cans of cheese floating around in brine here, and it is pretty handy if you like feta type cheese. That isn't the best brand to snack on that we've had, but it should work great in cooking.
(Actually an auto-translated link.)
Besides sounding like a good combo of ingredients, this should also use up several odds and ends of things out of the fridge. 😃 From that part of a carton of sour cream, to an open jar of pesto with chili. Probably throw some leftover fried onions in there too.
We don't actually have any cherry tomatoes (or sundried, which would probably also be delicious), so I am thinking of just using chunks of a sweet red pepper instead. Not the same flavor at all, but the same kind of color contrast and bit of freshness. Probably wouldn't be bad.

Amara Kitchen, 841 Mariposa St, Altadena, CA 91001, Score: 37/50
Tumblr media
Amara Kitchen started in Highland Park. The owner had a gluten-intolerance and so she was inspired to create a gluten-free restaurant with housemade baked goods and the type of food she enjoyed eating – healthy with lots of organic produce, eggs, sustainable meat, paleo friendly, etc. Order at the counter and get a number. They’ll bring your food. Get your own water and utensils. Try the housemade hot sauce.
Score: 37/50
Food: 5/5 – It’s good and healthy; avocado toast, pancakes, grain bowls, breakfast burritos, breakfast sandwiches, salads, etc. Breakfast and lunch are served all day. They try to use organic ingredients as much as possible. The avocado toast had a huge mound of mashed avocado and a big salad on the side.
Coffee: 5/5 – They offer FREE REFILLS of the house drip coffee. Canyon Coffee is served (local roaster) and it’s good. They also have interesting flavored lattes and housemade almond cashew milk.
Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, secure, stable. Ask for the password.
Ambiance: 4/5 – Homey, earthy hipster with hanging dried flower bouquets, lots of plants, mostly white color scheme.
Noise: 3/5 – Noisier than the Highland Park location (acoustics?), music playing
Plugs: 2/5 – Saw some on both sides of the room
Parking: 4/5 – Pretty easy, downtown Altadena isn’t busy
Comfort: 3/5 – Small tables, chairs aren’t padded but they’re new, some outdoor seating
Bathroom: 3/5 – One gender neutral one that’s small
Art: 3/5 – None
Tips: Perfect place to take your friends with dietary restrictions.
