Small and short goodbye prompts! Just a clarification, I consider the ones "emotionally subjective" based on the context used and emotions applied for your characters! In my opinion, I think that the saddest goodbye is an inside quote or joke!

They say the other nurse can always tell when you're faking it.

If you do find yourself, perfectly healthy, laid out on a daybed; Don't fall asleep.

You'll wake up far too late. The lights are out save the clinical glow from the instruments. The sound of bottles clinking and shuffling behind the privacy curtain may put you at ease, perhaps you call out to the nurse.

But you'll soon begin to realise. It's unusual for the nurse to let you sleep past curfew. It's strange for her to stay so late. It's abnormal for her not to answer you.

They say the silhouette is what betrays her. She moves in bouncing awkward movements as though her limbs are numb, fabric arms, boneless legs. Raggedy Ann pulled about on a string. obscuring the demon inside.

You meet wild, bloodshot eyes atop a deranged grin, a large syringe grasped clumsily in her fist.

There's an edge of mockery in her slurred words. She says it's for your own good, she says it will only hurt a little, she says she's sorry. Don't believe her. What she's about to do, is unforgivable.

what if we never make it to mars

at least, not enough of us or for long enough to have indisputable evidence we were there. what if one day in the far future, beings from far off solar systems explore Mars. would they be stunned to find the corpses of all our rovers and landers scattered across the planet, weathered and weary from sandstorms and exposure? would they recognise them the way we do?

perhaps they make the connection between human fossils and ruins on earth and the corpses littering the nearest planet. would they laugh at the way we anthropomorphised soulless beings? or would they wonder why we never came to retrieve the bodies of our most loyal companions?

would they be a symbol of hope? of human’s desire to explore?

or would they represent a mission never completed, a goal never achieved, a potential never reached.

i wonder if it may be a sombre sight.
