2020 Grimoire Challenge—day 3: planning 

Okay, I’ll admit, I basically worked on this for more than a week nonstop. I, uh, really like planning, guys. I pretty much intend my grimoire’s creation to be a years-long, if not lifetime endeavor. 

I intend the first picture to be the table of contents for the whole book, with each section having its own table of contents to suit the contents therein.

#GrimoireChallenge2020 or as I have shortened it in my journal #GC2020 has added some more pages, but just for those out there who ‘don’t know what to log’ in their journals, I gave a “blank page” picture.  

This was right after I put the date, time, moon phase & sign, but right before I began journaling about my day (and eventually used like 4 pages).  I log the same things for pretty much everything, if it doesn’t have a log of the date and moon phase at the top it’s because I’ve done it on the same day as a previous entry that does have the log.

These are days #23&24, Month and Weather timing.  While researching the month timing I found this neat list of what it means when the sun/moon are in the different signs and what to focus my energy on.  For pages like this, where I go out and find knowledge that I don’t already know (from amassed and now unknown sources), I write the source at the top of the page under the journal logging info.

GrimoireChallenge2020: Week 1

It’s about time I made a new grimoire after losing a lot of my posessions a couple of years ago so I’m participating in the 2020 Grimoire Challenge hosted by https://grimoirechallenge2020.tumblr.com/ . 

I’ll be using #SufiGrimoire as my personal tag and the #GrimoireChallenge2020, @grimoirechallenge2020 to tag for the challenge. 

Day 1: Gather materials.

Day 2: Pick a name

Day 4: Goal

To create a living document & tradition. A book which is beautiful, practical and which breathes. This Grimoire will not be a textbook or almanac but a commonplace of magical knowledge which will grow in size, depth and complexity over my lifetime.

Day 11 of @grimoirechallenge2020 "Witchy Calendar"

I attached my witchcraft calendar to the back of my Cycles of the Year page because it felt like it fit well there, and essentially expanded on what that page represents. All I included in the calendar was the full and new moon dates, the meteorological season dates, and the solstices and equinoxes. That is because I don't celebrate the typical wheel of the year, though I do find the changing of the seasons and cycle of the moon both beautiful and fascinating—and those cycles are important to my practice, essentially mirroring the cycles of life and death to me.

These are some materials I gathered to start the @grimoirechallenge2020​. I’m a little late, but I’m finally getting inspired to do it.

I decided to use loose pages so I can arrange them the way I want. I’m thinking about buying a fake leather to make the cover myself, because I have a very specific taste and all the binders with the aesthetics I seek are too expensive. But for now I’ll just keep the pages on a folder.

I also wanted recycled paper because you know, the environment and stuff. And they also have this nice look that will fit with my aesthetics idea for my grimoire. I don’t intend to make it perfect, cause I know I won’t be able to do it without freaking out. But I want it to look a little bit old and dark (but probably I'll add some cuteness and color to it at some point because I’m weak).

Day 8: Page on your astrological info

Hello! So sorry to post this late but I was in school and had no time to post it. I’m Cate, by the way. I’m the other witch who is running this challenge over on Instagram (@grimoirechallenge2020), I post my pages so if you need examples or would just like to see please follow! My personal tumblr and insta are veganwitchlady, also, so please give me a follow. I’d be very grateful ☺️

Anyway, today you will make a new page for your astrological information. Your sun, moon, ascending, mercury, etc. Or maybe just your sun, I don’t mind it’s your grimoire! If you’re confused about the other signs I listed, try looking up astrological chart generators and typing in your birthday. Sun signs are the most commonly known and prominent signs but there is a lot more to you than just your sun sign. However, that’s a story for another time. I will have some brief explanations for those signs on the Instagram.

My Grimoire is pretty lowkey and simple! It consists of a lockable dragon book and a special red pen that a teacher gave to me after I found it! Red is my host’s color for me (he has synesthesia). 🖤

Day 1 - 2020 Grimoire Challenge

Prompt: Gather your Materials

I have 3 sketchbooks - 2 large and one smaller. There’s a light/baby pink large one, a grey large one and a bright pink one.  I also have a black Micron 05 pen and a pink Micron 05 pen (I’ve heard good things about these pens from planner girls so I’m thinking they would be amazing to have).

Even though there are no rules for having a grimoire, I do feel odd for having pink books..but that’s me soooooo....

I’m looking forward to working through this challenge, and I’m sooo glad I found it! Thank you @grimoirechallenge2020​

As I’ve been doing most of my work for the @grimoirechallenge2020 digitally, I haven’t had many pages or pictures to share, but for Day 8 I thought I’d post a snapshot of my natal chart. As you can see, my chart leans pretty heavily toward the earth signs—especially Taurus—but my moon and ascendant signs lend me a strong affinity for water as well. I have a reasonably strong grasp of my own personal astrology due to my mother, who is an astrologer, but I’d love to improve my at-a-glance understanding of daily astrological signs and portents. Yet another thing to add to my list of grimoire challenge goals. :)

To make this chart, I used this very cool program called Astrolog, which you can set to your current time and location or use to calculate charts for past times and locations. It’s user friendly, seriously simplifies natal chart calculation, and best of all: it’s completely free and compatible with just about every OS!

Grimoire Challenge 2020—day 5: table of contents

I spent days finding a design I liked for the border, and weeks planning that damn outline just so I could write this out. But I am deeply satisfied with how it looks. It’s so fulfilling.

Day 5, Day 7, Day 8, Day 10.

I’ve had this index made for a while but haven’t implemented it.  Admittedly, there’s a lot of things I want to change with it already, but that’s what a work in progress is for.  I used Cafe.Astro in order to get my chart and write all the little graphs out.  I downloaded the printable version so I can read and organize it how I want later in my Notion Grimoire.  A lot of my ethics are actually taken from Satanism.  Fight me about it.

The book I ordered for my Grimoire finally arrived yesterday, which means I’ve been able to start transferring content from my electronic draft into the book.  I love how it looks and feels, its’ exactly the energy I was going for.  For my @grimoirechallenge2020 I’ve been making steady progress with the prompts too an I’m looking forward to transcribing what I have into my hard copy soon.  Day 10: 

This was a really useful excercise for me. I got to do a lot of thinking and took some notes. The rules are still quite loose and I don’t think I have a full list yet so I put the ones I came up with into my Grimoire with space to stick in a page extention.  - Do no harm -Take no shit -No vengeance work -No love spells or deception - Always seek consent from “target” when doing spells or divination.  Day 11:  I tend to use an almanac so this one wasn’t for me :)

Day 12:  I’ve compiled some sufi quotes, quotes from Ursula K. LeGuin and some of my own thoughts so go over and refine. I may just select some which are particularly evocative and put them on a 2 page spread at the start of Chapter 5: Principles of magic with some nice illustrations.  Day 13: I’ll be merging this with Day 12 as I got a lot of good material for this from my quotes search.  Day 14: I decided to keep this one simple. There is a huge amount of symbolism and content within the quote I’m using for this prompt within my faith & mystic tradition.   “And you? Day 2 of @grimoirechallenge2020 "Pick a Name"

For today's prompt, I needed to choose a name for my grimoire and then make a title page. I spent all day making this! It isn't perfect, but with after a little effort on my part, the mistakes aren't even that noticable.

I often get this far and this far only when trying to make a grimoire. I put a lot of effort into a title page, but don't do much else. I know I won't be able to sustain the amount of effort I put into this one page on every page, so it will be interesting to see how the rest of my grimoire pans out.
