Horizon and Edge

#5: Some Apology Necessary

I shut the lid of the coffee pot, and press the “brew” button. Mom and Dad go through a lot of coffee. Wow.

“There, the coffee’s brewing.”

Suddenly, I hear the doorbell ring. “Oh! Who could that be? It’s a Saturday....”

Annemarie reaches the door and opens it. “Hailey, they say they know you. Do you want me to burn them to ashes?” She asks in her Dark Emma voice.

I hear Cole remark, “Weirdo...” Typical.

I wonder what they want? I think. I tell my sister, “You can let them in, Annemarie.”

Annemarie sighs. “I guess you’re trustworthy. I really wanna burn something,” she mutters.

“Please DON’T,” Cole says.

Annemarie and Cole have this weird brother-sister relationship. They’re not afraid to tell each other exactly what they think, and they take it like siblings. It is not a romantic thing, not in the least. Besides, Annemarie says he’s too old for her. I didn’t argue.

So, there’s Cole and Rick... I think.

Cole tells me, “Your sister is weeeird.”

“I know.”

Rick chastises the both of us with, “THAT’S NOT NICE!” Then he pauses, and adds, “Even if it is true.” Annemarie walks past, weird and proud.

I notice someone else, and think, HIM. It’s Erik.

Erik waves and smiles at me. “Hiya, Hailey!” he says.

“You. What are you doing here?”

He just stands there, while I fume. Eventually, I decide that he’s not worth my time, and I turn to the other two.

“Actually, why are you two here?”

In the background, I hear Erik say, “She’s never going to forgive me.”

Maybe if you actually wanted it.

Moving on.

Rick and Cole assume this ridiculous attitude, and say:

“Because you’re pretty.” Cole.

“Yes, we came to declare our love!” And that’s Rick.

Annemarie and Erik have similar reactions.

“Blech!” Annemarie.

“Oh, c’mon.” Erik.

I laugh at the two of them. “You guys are disgusting,” I say, “And see-through. What do you actually want?”

Rick cocks his head. “Can’t I have a real date? I want a--?!”

Cole slaps his hand over Rick’s face, and tells me what they’re here for. “We need our textbooks. Erik’s, too.” He turns to Rick. “Shut up.”

“Ha-ha!” I laugh. “I was wondering who those belonged to! I’ll go get them.”

“Please, get them now,” Erik says. Now I’m annoyed again.

“I don’t live for you,” I say. “Get off my case, mister.” I don’t quite understand why his lack of apology has me so wound up, but it does, and I just can’t stand him most of the time.

I storm up to my room. I remember when these showed up. We had study meeting last night in the not-a-clubhouse clubhouse, and I kept going, Oh, I’ve cleaned up my stuff, only to come back and see more stuff. So, I kept cleaning it up.

Yeah. Oops.

I grab the books, and return downstairs. Rick and Cole are involved in some sort of wrestling match, and Erik is just standing by the door.

“Take your books, and LEAVE,” I say.

Erik is the first one out the door. Cole follows, but then he notices that Rick isn’t following, and returns.

“Byeee!” I say, trying to hint.

“Seriously... Date me,” Rick says.

Cole grabs him by the back of the shirt and begins to drag him away.

“No, thanks,” I say. Of course, I’m blushing, so that doesn’t do much good.

“Let’s... Go!” Cole grunts, sweat pouring down his face.

Rick finally leaves and I can shut the door. I lean against it and sigh.

And then Annemarie walks in and makes fun of my bright red face.

Erik:

As my friends and I walk away from Hailey’s home, I can’t help but wonder, Why won’t she let it go? It’s clearly not hate, I can tell, but she doesn’t want to interact with me, and even if I don’t try to, I annoy her.

I come back to reality in time to hear Cole yelling at Rick, “Why did you have to go and do that to her? Now she’ll never go out with you. You went and embarrassed her!”

Wait. Rick wants to date Hailey? Okay, I did not see that coming.

Now I’m interested. I turn around and ask, “Where’d this come from?”

Rick looks at me and shrugs. “She’s unique, I can talk to her, and she’s funny.” He pauses. “In her own way.”

I never see that side of her! Well, maybe Edge does, but it’s not the same!

“Define unique,” I say.

Rick sighs a defeated sigh. “She’s got a different sense of how the world works. Her eyes are two different colors. Blue and brown. She doesn’t do some of the same stupid stuff other girls do. Plus, if she really needed to, she could kick the tar out of some of these supervillains that keep running around.”

I wince. That’s supposed to be my job! “But, she’s just a girl.”

Rick’s eyes open wide. “Just a girl?!”

Cole rolls his eyes. “In the sense that she doesn’t have any noticeable... special talents. Like, superpowers. In that sense, she’s just a girl.”

I silently thank Cole. He knows me well enough to understand certain things, and explain them to others. He also knows me well enough to tell that something in my life has been different the last six months or so, but he doesn’t pry.

I’ve known Cole from third grade, but only met Rick when I first started high school. He added a much-needed dose of weirdness to the group.

Rick calms down. “Well, yeah, in that sense, she’s just a girl. But she’s great.”

Cole rolls his eyes again. “Dude, this dove thing is getting obnoxious. Talk about motorcycles or something. Or horses.”

I perk up, then calm down. I like horses, and Cole knows that. He’s just trying to make me look like a dork. Not that I need much help.

Rick perks up, too. “Hailey has horses! She has her own horse, named Stella!”

Darn it, Cole!

“Hailey has horses?” Cole asks.

Rick nods.

“Well, that settles it. Erik needs to stay as far away from Hailey as possible. Otherwise, poor Hailey will never get a moments peace!” Cole teases me.

“In all fairness, she wants to stay as far away from me as possible. So, that won’t be a problem,” I say.

Cole just shakes his head. “Dude, can’t we tease you without you getting all mopey? She’s probably still steaming. Girls are weird like that.”

I turn to him and grin. “Yeah, and Annemarie is the weirdest of them all.”

Cole shrugs. “Actually, I think that Hailey still wins, by a slim margin. But Annemarie is pretty darn crazy. She wears a lot of black, and talks about burning things down a lot. With chainsaws in the vicinity. She doesn’t have an ounce of dignity.”

Rick adds, “Weird and crazy aren’t the same thing. But she definitely needs some dignity.”

I laugh. “Clearly, someone needs to go to the store and buy her some.”

Cole shudders, then punches me. “You know you can’t BUY dignity. She’ll just have to live without. Unfortunately.”

By the time we reach my home, I’ve been sufficiently cheered up, and have almost forgotten why I’ve been depressed.

Almost.

7,000 Covid air purifiers promised for classrooms still not delivered as pupils return from half term

The government has still not delivered the 7,000 air purifiers it promised to help make schools Covid-safe, ahead of pupils returning from their half term break.

During the Christmas holidays ministers said the machines would be sent to schools to help improve ventilation in classrooms, but hundreds are still missing in action.

Opposition MPs said government “penny pinching” was to blame and that the promised number of purifiers was too few to cover 30,000 classrooms to begin with.

Government scientists have said since May 2020 that improvements to ventilation in indoor settings like schools are essential to stopping the spread of the disease.

They said one way of achieving this – especially when weather is colder and opening windows is less practical – is to install air purifiers.

Nadhim Zahawi, the education secretary, personally promised the air cleaning machines at New Year, and said they would help minimise disruption, but the latest stats show just 6,311 have been delivered half a term later.

Attendance data from last year shows that a further 10 million school days were missed due to Covid last term alone – on top of the 115 days education the average child missed between March 2020 and July 2021.

Schools have also been stretched further by teacher absences due to Covid, often spread in the classroom. The Department for Education has told schools that classes should be combined if too many teachers are missing.

Despite falling down the political agenda new Covid cases are still running at around 52,000 a day across the UK.

Responding to the broken government promise on purifiers Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Christine Jardine suggested that companies like Dyson could step in to help cover the shortfall.

“It’s time this government prioritised our children by making sure that their classrooms are safe and the air they breathe is clean,” she said.

“The technology to do this is available and major companies, who’ve benefited from the pandemic and government contracts, should be helping to keep the next generation safe in school.

“The government’s penny pinching means that they haven’t even met their own target of 7,000 units, never mind the hundreds of thousand extra purifiers needed to cover all 300,000 classrooms. If ministers won’t act to protect schools, then it’s right that businesses step in and play their part.”

Ms Jardine added that “industry giants like Dyson must do their bit by donating the air purifiers that our schools are desperate for”.

The air purifiers cost around £400 each and last month it was reported that some parents have taken to buying them for schools themselves.

To qualify for a government air purifier schools must show their classrooms have persistently high CO2 levels, a proxy for poor ventilation. But research by NASUWT, the teachers’ union, found that more than half of UK teachers did not have access to a carbon dioxide monitor in the their classrooms.

The Department for Education (DfE) says air cleaning units are “not needed in the vast majority of classrooms” and “only where there is poor ventilation that cannot be easily improved”.

Robin Walker, the schools minster, said: “Over 99.9 per cent of schools continue to be open with millions of children enjoying vital time with friends and teachers – thanks to the hard work of education staff up and down the country.

“Enhanced ventilation continues to be important and we are making sure eligible settings that have applied for air cleaning units are receiving them.

“The majority of rooms that require air cleaning units now have them, with over 6,000 already delivered and more deliveries taking place every day.”

Where Everyone Went During Paris Fashion Week, Besides the Shows

Though clothing takes center stage during Paris Fashion Week, the PFW experience isn’t exclusively about runways, models and high-fashion ensembles. Sightseeing is on the menu—so is nightlife, gallery-hopping and a ton of delicious food.

In fact, a trip to Paris Fashion Week is a lot like any other trip to Paris (except your touristy ventures are punctuated by the occasional fashion show or celebrity spotting).

Now, you can’t control whether you score an invite to one of Paris’ exclusive runways. But you can get the rest of the fashion week experience—first, by allowing street style galleries and social media posts to take you on a vicarious tour of PFW. And then, by supplementing that experience with some in-real-life sightseeing of your own.

You might not be on the list for that incredible afterparty Joan Smalls posted on Instagram, but a lot of celeb-approved sites are guest list-free (read: open to the public).

Here, the 11 places celebs visited during Paris Fashion Week (aside from the shows, of course). And remember: Everyone’s schedule is packed during fashion week, so if your favorite stars managed to make time for these places during their hectic days, you know they’re worth checking out.

Place Vendrôme

Located in the 1st Arrondissement of Paris, this square is home to some of the best street style of fashion week. You might also want to pop by to visit l’Hôtel Ritz Paris, or to shop Cartier, Rolex or Chanel jewelry.

Restaurant l’Avenue

A known Parisian (hot-spot, l’Avenue attracts all kinds of celebrities. Eva Longoria was spotted there this season, and Bella Hadid and Hailey Baldwin were there in May.

Café de Flore

Café de Flore is one of the oldest coffee houses in Paris, once serving as a hub for famous artists, writers and philosophers (including Pablo Picasso and Ernest Hemingway). Now, it’s the place to be seen—especially if you’re sitting outside.

Loulou Restaurant at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs

With a view of the Louvre Pyramid, the Loulou Restaurant attracts fashion people day and night. Negin Mirsalehi, Romee Strijd and Victoria Beckham went for dinner during PFW, and Valentina and Chiara Ferragni had a late lunch there (as one does when in Europe, obviously).

Le Carmen, a Parisian nightclub, saw tons of celebrity action this PFW, as Bella Hadid hosted a Chrome Hearts x Off White party there. Some of the attendees: musical artist Caroline Vreeland, influencer Caroline Daur, Kendall Jenner, Cindy Crawford, model Jordan Barrett, Virgil Abloh (who DJ’ed) and Jessie Jo Stark (who performed).

Horizon and Edge

#4: The Never-Ending Show

Bright lights. People are staring at me. Cameras filming me without permission. This is my worst nightmare!

I’m screaming, but no one hears me. WHY AM I HERE?!

Suddenly, someone is up in my face. He--I assume that he’s a he--is wearing a black and green outfit, with what appears to be night-vision goggles, so you can’t easily identify gender, or see his eyes.

He asks me, “Are you ready to play a game?”

I say, “Nnnnnnn....”

“I’ll take that as a ‘yes’.” He turns to the crowd. “Now, how shall we put her through her paces?”

Someone yells, “Make her recite poetry!”

I shudder. I do NOT like poetry. And someone knows that.

“Ah, yes,” he says, “Poetry. You must recite a set of poetry, of your choice. You may even recite your own poetry. You must recite three pieces, at least eight lines, of any type.” He pauses. “The only exception to the eight-line rule is haikus.”

I stare at him.

He stares right back. “You must start... Now.”

I think frantically. What am I going to recite?!

Haikus. I can do haikus. Five, seven, five. No rhyme necessary.

I take a deep breath. “I stare at the sky,

Wondering about the night,

Moonlight and starlight.”

That’s the first one. I’ll do one more haiku, and end with something... else.

I close my eyes. “My hands open wide,

reaching for inspiration,

but cannot find it.”

This one last one... I hope I can do it.

“Rena's ring, ran away

Ran away to be safe.

Rena's rage, roars greatly

And asks the ring to abate.

Rena's ring, returns today

Rena’s rage roar fades away.

Rena's ring, returned at last,

Rena's rage, restored in the past.”

I stop. That’s the end of the poem, which I wrote for a school assignment about alliteration. But it works great here, too.

The guy contemplates me. “Hmm... That was some good poetry, what a way to finish the show! Am I right, everyone?”

The audience cheers, while I blink confusedly. But I thought that it had just started?

The show dude continues speaking: “Tune in next time, when you’ll hear me say...”

The world distorts around me, and everything goes... fuzzy, for lack of a better word.

“Welcome to the Never-Ending Show!”

“NO!” I yell. It’s been reset. I have to do the poetry all over again!!!

“Are you ready to play a game?”

“NOOO!”

“Well, too bad,” he says. “You’re going to play one anyway. How should we put our guest to the test?”

“A super high obstacle course! With spikes!”

“NOPE!” I yell, and attempt to walk off the stage.

The host grabs me around the waist with inhuman speed, and sets me right back onstage. “Ah, ah, ah. You can’t leave yet! You have to take the Hightly-rated Obstacle Course, With Spikes!”

I’m all of a sudden standing at the beginning. I see the path they mean for me to take, fraught with perilous balancing sections, and walls of fire. Oh, and spikes. Because I need more injuries, in the case of...GULP. Falling.

But... I also see another path. It’s a little trickier, and I’ll have to rely on some jungle-gym experience, but there’s less chance of dying... I hope.

I hear the buzzer ring, and I take off, heading in the “correct” direction, until I grab a metal support beam, and swing. The obstacle course goes halfway around the stage. I’ll get there way faster like this.

Until he starts pressing buttons.

A column of flame erupts right in front of me, nearly searing off my bangs. I yelp, and go around it. Then there is a storm of arrows, and a truly diabolical moment with some tesla arcs and metal wires. I finally reach the end, turn towards the host, and raise a pinky finger at him. Thank you, Annemarie.

The host chuckles. “We couldn’t let you have an easy win. That would have been boring. But, now, the show’s over. Good night, everyone, and tune in next time, when you’ll hear me say...”

The weird distortion happens again, and again I hear him say:

“Welcome to the Never-Ending Show!”

I scream at the ceiling. This is truly my worst nightmare.

I’ve been through so much tonight. They’ve made me swim with sharks, dance in front of people, do a VR skydiving simulation... The list goes on. I can’t catch a break. They even made me parse a sentence, without textbook help. That wasn’t so much a nightmare as much as me making shtuff up, and then screaming at the host.

I’m panting on the floor. The whole thing has just reset, again, and I’m waiting for my next trial.

POOF!

I jump, and almost yell. Edge is right in front of me, holding his index finger to his lips in the “shh” sign.

I never understood that sign. One finger does not keep someone’s mouth from running. Heck, in some cases, a whole two hands and a roll of duct tape wouldn’t do that. Not naming any names... *Cough, cough* Liam.

Anyway, I see him do that, and then he disappears. But not with a poof. He just fades, so I’m pretty sure he just turned invisible.

Right in my ear, I hear, “Just stay calm. I’m going to fix this.”

I nod ever-so-slightly. I feel a whisper of wind, and know that he’s gone. I stand up and turn towards the host. I dunno what Edge is going to do, but I know what I’ve been itching to do ever since the tesla arcs.

I walk up to the host. “Hey, Mr. Host-dude.”

He turns to me. “Yes? We haven’t picked the task yet.”

I smile sinisterly. “But I have.”

He cocks his head. “Oh, really?” A skeptic if I’ve ever met one.

I flip my hair. “Yeah, it’s called, ‘What’s Super-hard and Can Be Shoved into a Super-jerk’s Face?’”

He strokes his chin, and I adjust my stance ever-so-slightly. Super-jerk is super-dumb.

“I haven’t heard of that one. Is it a game of riddles?”

I shake my head. “I’ll show you. Just come a little closer...”

He leans in... and I punch him in the mask-covered face.

He recovers and looks in my direction... or where I used to be. I run across the stage and jump off.

“HAILEY!” Edge yells at me. I just wink over my shoulder. I have no idea where he is, but, he’ll probably grab the bad guy, and keep me from being torn to pieces.

Probably.

I turn around, just in time to see Edge pummel the host, ripping through an illusion. Oh, boy. The real version of the host is super creepy. I’m mildly creeped out.

Edge is unphased, and continues to beat the host.

“You need to quit forcing people into living their nightmares, Nightmare Host!”

Well, at least his name makes sense.

Edge puts his foot in the small of Nightmare Host’s back, and raises his hands up. They begin to glow golden light, and then he aims at the villain, slashes through the air, and Nightmare Host vanishes.

The world distorts one last time, and I’m back in the dark street. I’m on my knees, peering at the world confusedly. A second later, I realize that Edge is right beside me, panting. He sounds like he just ran two consecutive marathons.

“Are you okay? Did you kill that guy?” I pause. “How long was I in there?”

He sits up a little straighter. “I didn’t kill him. I don’t do that. I simply banished him for a while. When he comes back, he’ll be powerless, and in jail.” He takes a deep breath. “I’m okay, just drained. That power takes a lot of energy, that’s all.” He stands up, only a little unsteady on his feet. He pulls me up as well. “You were only in there for a few minutes. It only seemed longer because it was a mindscape. He made it seem longer than it actually was.”

I nod. “Thanks for getting me out of there. If you hadn’t, I probably would have lost my mind.”

He looks at the sky above us. “And then I would have had to fight you, and get you out from under his control.”

I shudder. “I hate being controlled and manipulated,” I say. “And I’m glad that you don’t have to that.”

“Me, too.”

I begin to walk. “Guess I’ll see you around.”

“I guess so. Try and stay out of super-trouble,” he warns.

I turn around and roll my eyes. “I already do that. It’s trying to get trouble to stay away from me that’s the problem.” I pause, thinking to myself, This was the first time.

He chuckles. “Maybe you’re the trouble.”

I retort. “Sure, I’m trouble. Just my life.”

He smiles. “You better get home. You look like you need some sleep.”

I turn towards home, and remark, “After that game show of doom? Uh, yeah.”

He laughs again, then disappears.

Me, I head home.

Este será uno de los muros más fotografiados por los asistentes a Coachella, igual que las instalaciones artísticas que se han colocado en pleno desierto coincidiendo con el festival.

Aunque ahora mismo el contenido de la cuenta oficial de @Coachella es más bien promocional e informativo, con mapas, agendas y posts sobre los patrocinadores del evento, en cuanto la música empiece a sonar en Indio, sus publicaciones se actualizarán con lo que va sucediendo tanto sobre el escenario como por el espacio que ocupa el festival. Además, es la cuenta oficial. ¿A quién seguir mejor que a ellos? Las marcas de moda patrocinadoras del Festival de Coachella

Y ya que hablamos de moda, imposible no mencionar al partner fashion oficial del festival: H&M crea cada año una colección especial para Coachella y tiene un espacio exclusivo en el recinto para refrescarse, descansar, conectarse…. Es posible que no bombardeen su cuenta con fotos, pero ahora que están las Stories de Instagram, seguro que nos muestran lo que está pasando en su tienda y alrededores. Y si no, siempre podemos echar un vistazo a las cuentas no oficiales que también se aprovechan de un modo u otro del tirón del festival (a veces rozando la ilegalidad), invitando y vistiendo a algunas influencers u organizando fiestas paralelas en los alrededores de Palm Springs, todas con su propio hashtag como #RevolveFestival o #GUESSFestival.

Los hoteles más cool de Coachella

Aunque el Festival de Coachella ofrece un espacio para acampar, muchos de los asistentes optan por colocarse en alguno de los hoteles (o moteles) de sus alrededores. Los más cool aprovechan el evento para ofrecer música en directo, tratando de retener a los huéspedes (y su dinero) en sus piscinas y jardines. Otros acogen las fiestas que, como os comentaba, organizan las marcas en paralelo.

Para estar al día de lo que se cuece durante el festival, también es interesante, pues, seguir las cuentas de estos super hoteles, Ahí va una lista con los más top y demandados:

Seguro que reconocéis las paredes multicolor de @thesaguarops, dibujando un arcoiris alrededor de la piscina donde, por las mañanas, se organizan sesiones de yoga para #detox before #retox. Ese es el espíritu festivalero, ¡claro que sí!

Otro de los hoteles que seguro que os suena es el @acehotelpalmsprings con esa entrada tan instagrameada y un muro pintado que sirve de fondo para muchos likes, aunque cada año cambia el diseño. De ahí es de donde sacamos nuestra super receta de la ensalada de espicacas con quinoa y almendras que sirvieron durante una fiesta de Marc by Marc Jacobs.

En el hotel Viceroy de Palm Springs es donde se suele celebrar la fiesta de Guess aunque no veréis nada en su cuenta @viceroyhotels, así que mejor usar el hashtag #viceroypalmsprings o geolocalizarlocon ese mismo nombre.

Celebrities, modelos, influencers y demás it-girls que no se perderán el festival

¿Y que hay de todo el gentío que acudirá al festival?, os estaréis preguntando. Pues aunque es imposible seguir a las miles y miles de personas que estarán estos días bailando (con estilo) bajo la solana, hemos intentado recopilar las más top (followed) que sabemos que no se perderán este Weekend 1 de Coachella.

#3: Different people, different places

Hailey:

I wake up and stare at the ceiling. After apologizing to Edge last night, I definitely feel better.

I roll out of bed and get ready for school. Kaylee said that she and Beth have been planning something for me. And that I’ll get to see--Ooh, shorts over leggings, very nice--I’ll get to see it today.

At school, Beth and Kay are super excited. I wish they would just tell me what’s going on. If I know that there is a surprise, I hate it. I’m also a naturally jumpy person, and hate surprises in general. And people. And social events. And convention, tradition, stereotypes, and all things normal. AGGG! I will never adjust to normal society!

Okay, ignore the diatribe.

I breeze through math, which is unusual. I usually struggle, and there is much throwing of pencils. Then I get lectured for throwing the thirty-cents-worth of pencil.

Science was science. English made me want to scream obscenities in French, and German. Not that I know any swear words in German, but still... AGH! MUFFIN-FUDGING ENGLISH THREE!!!!

Anyway, after school, I’m just sitting on the steps. Beth and Kay come out of the monstrous building that is our school, and tell me to follow them. I do so, wondering what they’re going to show me.

Thirty minutes later, we are standing in front of a... tiny house. It’s a tiny house. AHHAHHAHHAH-HAHHAHHAH!!

“Nice clubhouse,” I remark.

Behind me, I hear Beth ask, “Kaylee, are you all right?”

Kaylee bursts out: “IT’S NOT A CLUBHOUSE! It’s a place for us and our friends to get together and hang out! To play games and do homework and to get to know each other! It’s not a clubhouse!”

“Okay.” I turn to Beth. “So... it’s basically a clubhouse?”

Beth nods. “Yeah, pretty much. She just won’t admit it.”

“OMIGOSH IT’S NOT A FREAKING CLUBHOUSE!!!!” Kaylee explodes.

I laugh, and pat her on the shoulder, then I walk in. I almost run into Rick, who is one of the two guys that the girls introduced me to yesterday. The other guy is really grumpy. His name is Cole.

“Sorry!” I exclaim, trying to get around. He blocks me.

“Nice to see you again. Kaylee brought you here?” He asks.

Agh, why must people speak to me?! “Yes,” I say, then duck underneath his arm. Both thank the cheezits for and curse the muffin-fudging tall people!

I take in the room. Clearly, the tiny clubhouse only has one room. There’s an old couch, some old tables, an old fridge, etc. Clearly, most of this stuff is third- or even fourth-hand furniture. Probably from the Quintants’ parents.

I see Cole. He sees me. He waves at me, and says, “Hi, Persephone.”

PERSPHONE??!!

I clear my throat. “Excuse me, but that’s not my name.”

“All right, Persephone.”

“DON’T CALL ME PERSEPHONE!!!”

“Yes, Persephone.”

I yell in frustration, and walk to the other end of the room. Until I see Erik. Then I stop walking, and just stand there. I feel dumb, but...

1. I don’t like Erik very much.

2. I don’t like boys very much.

3. I don’t know these kids very well.

4. I don’t exactly know why I’m here.

5. I’m not a social person.

6. Bethany and Kaylee are talking to Rick, and I don’t want to talk to him again.

7. Better to feel dumb and not talk to people you don’t want to talk to, then to talk to them and dislike them even more.

8. It’s a small clubhouse, and I don’t have anywhere else to go.

Anyway, I’m not talking.

I glance at one of the tables, and sit down at it. Then I pull out my sketchbook, and some pencils. I might as well do something.

I’m getting along pretty well, drawing my favorite horse, Stella, being tended to by James, our ranch-hand, until I sense someone behind me, watching me. I turn around, and see Rick. He is really close.

“Um...” I can’t say anything else. I can’t talk to boys, except to yell at them for being dumb. Never have. Well, I can do it to Liam, but he’s my brother. Different circumstances.

Rick starts, then turns bright red. His hair is a subdued brown red, so he looks kind of like an upside-down fence post.

“Sorry,” he says, “I was just looking. You draw really well.”

Suddenly, my tongue is loosened. “It’s not star quality.”

He brightens, like he wasn’t expecting me to speak, but now that I have, maybe we can get along.

We’ll see.

“It’s better than mine. I prefer to draw stick figures, and horses never show up. How did you get so good?” He asks. He’s genuinely curious. I suppose I better tell him. Lying’s not my shtick, anyway.

“Well, I’ve lived on a ranch for most of my life. So, besides doing all my chores, and amassing useful skills, I began to draw in my small amounts of free time. Growing up on a ranch gives a good idea of how any kind of body works, so I began to start drawing people and animals. I’m also fairly decent at landscapes, though not at the same level as my people.” I stop for a breath, and to see if he wants to add something to the conversation.

Because that’s how conversation works.

Rick looks at me. “You grew up on a ranch?”

“I did MOST of my growing up on a ranch. I’m finishing my growing up here in the City,” I correct him.

“Right, right, of course. But I guess that explains your ‘different-type-of-girl’ aura.”

“Um, aura?” I question. “You mean how I carry myself, right? Because I don’t believe in magic and stuff like that.” And I don’t glow.

Rick nods. “Yeah, it’s in the way you carry yourself, the way you look at problems and find solutions, the way you interact with people.”

“Cautiously?”

“Um, yeah. Though that’s really an understatement. You are clearly used to non-human companionship.” He laughs. “You actually seem afraid of people.”

I cringe. “That obvious, huh?” I sigh. “It’s more of a fear of... not understanding them. I was raised differently, even from other kids on ranches, and I know it. I’m more afraid of not understanding society, but at the same time, I kind of... embrace it.”

Rick shrugs. “Hey, I understand embracing the unconventional. I’m different, too. Even from my family. But you are like... thirteen times as different.”

I raise an eyebrow. “Thirteen? Really embracing the unconventional, aren’t we?”

He laughs.

Later, I’m out wandering. I told my parents, I have a GPS, and I told them I’d probably be home by ten o’clock. I’m set.

As I turn down a dark street, I see a patch of light that stands out. Naturally. But I mean, it’s different from the other patches, like those from streetlamps.

I step closer, and look at it from a closer distance. It seems more like it’s moving light, or moving light and sound. Or just a really bright flashlight.

I creep a little closer. It doesn’t seem to change. It’s really bright...

I accidentally touch it, and get sucked down into a mess of sound and light distortion. As I land on a hard surface, I hear someone shouting:

“Welcome to the Never-Ending Show!”
