Easy IDs to do for beginners

Disability Pride Month is here! And as so I think it'd be neat to incentive people to describe more images, as advocacy for acessibility.

But I get it that describing images (visual stuff) with *your own words* may seem a bit challenging, specially if you've never done that before, so I decided to gather some easy things you can describe to start!

1 - Text transcripts

What is a text transcrip? A text transcript is when you have an image whose only component is text, and you take the text from it and write it out for the people who for whatever reason can't acess the image themselves (like if they are blind and use a text-to-speech device to read what's on the screen for them and therefore can't recognize the text of an image, people with low vision that can't see average-sized text and configure theirs to display text in a bigger font, which doesn't work on images and it's too tiny for them to read...). An example of text transcript:

[ID: Text: An adult frog has a stout body, protruding eyes, anteriotly-attached tongue, limbs folded underneat, and no tail (the tail of tailed frogs is an) /end ID.]

Text transcripts are easy to do because you only have to take the already existing text from an image and type it out. For longer text-only images, you can also use a text recognition AI tool, such as Google Lens, to select the text from you and then you just have to copy and paste it into the description.

2 - Memes

Despiste what you may think, most memes (specially 1-panel memes) are incredibly easy to describe, because they come from a well-known template. Take this one for an example:

They are easy to describe because despiste having many elements, you can easily sum it all up in a few words, like "the loss meme", "the is this a pigeon meme", the "bernie sanders" meme, and so on. When you describe memes, you don't have to worry about every single detail, (@lierdumoa explains this better on this post) but only about 'what makes this meme funny?' If you are describing one, just describe which is the meme you're talking about, and how it differs from its template, like the captions or anyone's face that may have been edited in.

3 - One Single Thing

Images with "one single thing" are, I think, the easiest thing to describe on the world. When you describe things, what you're supposed to do is "describe what you see". If there's only one thing to see, then you can easily describe it! Quick example:

[ID: A banana. /end ID.]

See?

You could also describe this image as "a single yellow banana in a plain white background", but this extra information is not exactly important. One knows a banana is yellow. That is not unusual, and neither that nor the color of the background change anything in the image. So in these types of descriptions, you can keep things very short and simple, and deliver your message just as well.

An exception would be something like this:

[ID: A blue banana. /end ID.]

In this case, where there is something unusual about the object, describing it will be more useful. When you say "banana", one would assume the banana is yellow, so to clarify, you say that this specific banana is blue.

When you have other situations where your One Single Thing is unusual in some way, like a giant cat, a blue banana, or a rotten slice of bread, pointing out what their unusual characteristic is is the best way to go.

3.5 - A famous character of person

This one is actually similar to the One Single Thing type of ID. When you are describing, say, a random person or an oc, you'd want to describe things like their clothes, their hair color, etc., but in the case of an already well-known figure, like Naruto or Madonna, just saying their names delivers the message very well. Like this for example:

[ID: Taylor Swift, singing. /end ID.]

or

[ID: Alastor from Hazbin Hotel, leaning on his desk to pick up a cup. /end ID.]

In both of these cases, you technically could describe them as "a blonde woman with light skin...", "a cartoon character with animal ears and a suit..." but you will be more straight to the point if you just say "Taylor Swift" and "Alastor". In these cases, it's usually very useful to describe what they're doing as well, like "singing" and "leaning on his desk to pick up a cup", or whatever else.

An extra tip I can give you to describing characters in specific, is to point out if they are wearing anything different. With most cartoon characters, they usually have a signature outfit and hairstyle, that one would expect them to be in. So, similarly to the blue banana case, if they are wearing a different thing than they usually do, it comes in handy to state that in your description. Like this:

[ID: Sakura from Naruto wearing a nurse outfit. /end ID.]

Sakura's usual outfit is not a nurse one, so since she is wearing one, pointing it out is very helpful.

The last tip I have for describing characters is pointing out which franchise they are from. For example, if I just said "Sakura", you'd probably assume it was this one, since she is famous, but you wouldn't be able to be sure, because how many Sakuras are out there? So, saying "Emma from the X-Men" and "Emma from The Promised Neverland" is gonna be very helpful.

And a few tips about formatting:

Putting "id" and "end id" at the start and at the end of your description is gonna help the people reading it to know where the description starts and where it ends, so they don't read, say, your caption, and think you are still talking about your description

Customized fonts, colored text, italics, bold text or tiny text aren't things you should do your ID in. Most customized fonts are pretty hard to understand, and most text-to-speech devices can't recognize them. Tiny text is hard to see for people who need big fonts, and italized text faces the same issue because it makes the words smaller. Full lines or paragraphs of colored text can cause eyestrain when people try to read them, and bolded text makes the edges of the words too close together and can make it even harder to read for people who have trouble reading already.

Finally watched the predator, and I enjoyed it, though I was doing th leonardo dicaprio pointing at the screen every time a meme happened. What really surprised me was how little we see of the predator. I thought he was gonna be running all over the place, so it was neat to see how much they held back. I bet that would have been something going in completely blind.

One of my biggest annoyances and "what could have beens" with the original Predator movie is the opening sequence where you see the predator's ship crash onto Earth. I'm sure it was meant to manage expectations or whatever, but that's the only hint that the movie has *anything* to do with Aliens for the first good part of the movie.

Imagine going into the theater and thinking you're watching a fuckin commando movie and then halfway into the movie you discover that they're actually being hunted by an alien. How fucking cool would that reveal have been.

Still love the movie, and I agree, they spend so much time 'hiding' the predator from you that the moments you actually get to see it are really neat. His face reveal at the very end of the movie is iconic. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie! (And the memes--I know so many people have a moment of WHAT THE HELL when they realize the two muscular arms epic handshake is from this movie)

Happy 28th birthday to this iconic moment in Canadian history!!

On February 15th, 1996, former Canadian prime minister, Jean Chrétien created this could-be meme format by putting a protester in a chokehold. The photo of the event became known by many Canadians as the Shawinigan Handshake; a joke about the prime minister’s home town.

Now, this dude bred controversy man. Like any politician, you go to the controversy page of his Wikipedia page and all of them have full articles associated with them. This controversy, while having its own Wikipedia page, is barely even a controversy compared to everything else. In fact, the now 90-year-old man allegedly will still take photos reenacting the event. Notable examples being comedian Rick Mercer and current prime minister Justin Trudeau. There’s a Shawinigan microbrewery that has a beer depicting the event on the label. The label uses the likenesses of Chrétien and hockey commentator and fellow controversy-machine: Don Cherry.

So where did this come from? Why did the prime minister of Canada have this protester in a chokehold? Well, this may come as a shock, but Canada has only ever had two political assassinations: D’rcy McGee, 1868 and Pierre LaPorte, 1970. However that has not stopped people from trying.

Three months before the infamous Shawinigan Handshake photo was taken on Flag Day, Jean Chrétien survived an assassination attempt. Much like the president of the US, the PM resides in a publicly known address: 24 Sussex Street in Ottawa. A separatist snuck into the house in the early morning with a knife with the intention to slit Chrétien’s throat. The attack was narrowly missed due to (allegedly) the random chance of Chrétien’s wife Aline being up and spotting him.

So my man is tormented by the traumatic experience of almost getting killed in his sleep both by his own brain and the opposition. Needless to say, he’s a little on edge as he’s at this Flag Day ceremony, even more so when his security detail seemingly breaks up. Then, BAM! A protester is in his face. Having grown up a bit of a scrapper and having assassination on his mind, the PM (around 60 at the time) takes the guy in a chokehold, and the rest is history.

On a quick aside, four years later, Chrétien was pie’d by a protester and, this part seems relatively unclear, but it seems he had a trauma response to it. For whatever reason, the opposition decided this was fair game to bring up in the House of Commons. and one Tory MP was quoted as saying “next time it may not be a pie” which was interesting phrasing. However, this wasn’t new as they felt it was appropriate to make an ableist attack ad in 1993. The ad was regarding the appearance of his mouth, a result of a condition called Bell’s Palsy but that’s another story.

Jasper is easiest with emotional intimacy. He can open up about anything (except the whole situation with Natalia- that’s totally private) and wants others to know that they can open up to him too. He’s an excellent secret keeper, so you know whatever you have to say is in safe hands, and he never ever judges. For Jasper, emotional intimacy is the most important since he knows it takes a great deal of trust and courage for someone to talk about their worries and problems and knows that if somebody talks to him about that then they’re comfortable with him listening and knowing.

He likes physical intimacy, too, especially with people he truly cares for. Jasper a hugger and greets friends with hugs whenever she sees them and is more than happy to give someone a long, comforting hug when they’re upset. He’s happy to hold someone’s hand, too, and particularly so when it’s someone he’s romantically involved with- Jasper loves the gentleness and subtly of kissing the back of a partner’s hand and the warmth of it against his own. He loves it most when somebody rests their head on his shoulder. He’s done many handshakes over the years so he’s perfectly fine with those, too.

As far as sexual intimacy goes, that’s not something he openly discusses, but enjoys it very much. However, Jasper is a very considerate lover who is very in tune to his partner’s boundaries and takes his time in exploring their body, committing it to memory and knowing their sweet spots, but never wanting to make them uncomfortable. His favourite thing is neck kisses, going gentle and slow, before moving south. He truly believes the eyes are the windows to the soul, so eye contact is important to maintain; it helps Jasper to better read his partner’s emotions and feels more of a connection through it. He also derives great pleasure in whispering and mumbling compliments their ear, knowing it’ll make them feel good and hopefully give them a confidence boost. He’s definitely more of a giver than a receiver (and that goes for everything, not just sex), but is certainly more than willing to be the latter.
