Hi!
I have a question outside of the games.
Pick 3 of your favourite bl couples. Then choose a song that you feel matches them. For whatever reason.
Hope this helps the boredom. Rose💜
Oooohhhh this is interesting and extremely difficult. This is going to take me awhile cause first I need to think of my 3 favorite couples? And then narrow down songs for them????
Honorable mention to Ba Ram and Han Tae from Sing My Crush. Their song is Second Wind. They get an honorable mention cause it feels like cheating to use something built into the show even though they are one of my favorite couples.
Okay. In no particular order:
Yutaka and Minoru - Our Dining Table
Their song is Fallin' by Dylan Brady. This actually required zero thought for me. I knew this one immediately.
2. Shi Lei and Yu Zhen - Be Loved in House: I Do
Their song is Color by Paradise Fears
3. Kawin and Pluem - Ghost Host Ghost House
Their song is my home by AWIN.
And now I'm cheating cause I'm gonna add two couples.
4. King and Uea - Bed Friend
Their song is I GUESS I'M IN LOVE by Clinton Kane.
5. Mizuki and Yoh - My Personal Weatherman
Their song is getting over by MICO. At least until the end of the show.
This took me FOREVER. I loved every second. Thank you <3

𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: Kenji tells himself that he only frequents the local restaurant because their food is always the best, made with the freshest ingredients. Definitely not because he enjoys finding excuses to chat with the owner’s attractive daughter, who often helps out as an unofficial waiter.
Tumblr media
Kenji rarely found a place to eat without being overwhelmed by baseball fans who knew nothing about personal space. While he appreciated the admiration, it was increasingly frustrating having to sit down for a meal and being disrupted.
But that wasn’t his main concern. He knew that if fans saw him dining at a certain restaurant, it would soon be flooded, limiting space in the establishment.
Fortunately, he found Kokochi Tei, a small family-owned restaurant run by a widower and occasionally his daughter, who helped as a waitress. The place quickly became his sanctuary, offering both privacy and delicious food.
Initially, Kenji frequented Kokochi Tei for its food and respect for privacy. But everything changed when you started helping out at the restaurant.
He found himself looking for you the moment he entered, hoping you were working that day. He didn’t understand what it was about you that piqued his interest.
But he knew that the hidden gem of the establishment seemed even brighter when you were there—or maybe that was just the sun reflecting on the window.
At first, he thought at all stemmed from his envy of your relationship with your father, as self-projecting as it sounded.
It never crossed his mind that he might actually be interested in you as an individual until you started interacting with him more one-on-one while serving the other patrons.
His brows creased from carrying the day's weight as he sat behind the shoji screen, though he was hopeful that coming to Kokochi Tei would turn things around.
He noticed your figure behind the screen getting closer as you headed to his table, menu in hand. Your strides always seemed to carry some grace.
“Are you sure you don’t want the menu this time?” You asked, clutching onto the menu against your chest.
“Yeah, no.” Kenji shook his head, his lips tugging up in a small smirk. “Your father is like a maestro in the kitchen, I think I’d rather take the chance,” he leaned back in his seat with his broad arms crossed over his chest.
Eating at Kokochi Tei meant expecting the unexpected, especially when it came to your father’s cooking. He was always experimenting with different dishes and Kenji would accept it, even if it was something he never had. “So, what’s special for tonight?”
“Well…Dad’s been experimenting with some Vietnamese dishes, and he nailed a chicken pho ga recipe,”
“Pho, really now?” He arched his brow, interest piqued. “How can I pass up on some chicken pho? Sounds good.”
“Alright, one bowl of pho it is,” you said.
“You’d dad was practically busting his ass in the kitchen before I got here. Is he…doing okay?” The question lingered for a moment, Kenji’s gaze drifted towards the kitchen at the far back.
“Ah…he will be once I run him a bath after,”
“Oh is that so?” He responded, his lips curled to a full grin. “Looks like you’ve got your hands full then, huh?”
“Mhmm I think he’s trying to keep himself distracted after Mom’s not around anymore…” your voice trailed off at the end. It was a sensitive topic that you wouldn’t elaborate on. You blinked and spoke again, “So…pho ga?”
“Yeah. Oh, and a glass of your dad’s homemade green tea if he’s got any,”
“Of course…should be ready in 15.” You turned your heels to leave.
“Oh…and by the way,” Kenji called out, making you halt in your tracks before you turned back to look at him. There was something about the way you perked up when he called after you that sent a flutter through him. “Did you happen to catch the game today?”
“You know I always do. Dad’s always a fan.” You responded. He held his gaze at you, watching your every expression as you spoke.
“So, I assumed you saw my little fight with the catcher, too.”
“Yeah…what’s with that?”
He sighed, ranking a hand through his hair as he recalled the event. “Long story short: the guy had a smartass comment he just needed to say.” He said, a hint of irritation evident in his voice. “And, I’m sure you know me. I don’t tend to stay quiet when I get riled up,”
He wondered what you were thinking when you watched him tussle with the catcher live on television.
Shifting in his seat at the thought, he continued, “You uh…probably saw how the coach pulled from the game after that…”
“Heh—” you stifled a laugh before covering your mouth, clearly amused by his compromising anecdote.
“What’s that sweet giggle for, huh?” He said with a tease before adding on “Don’t you have tables to wait,” he pointed out with a huff, though he couldn’t hold back his smile that gave away his unseriousness. You always found a way for him to bring out his more relaxed side.
“Uh huh,” You managed to compose yourself before you left his table to attend to the other patrons.
“Yeah…that’s what I thought,” he watched you walk away with a shit-eating grin plastered on his face. A few silent moments passed by, his eyes darted around the restaurant, observing anything that could keep his attention.
There were a few paintings hung on the wall with contemporary art pieces and a few plants dotting the space. He leaned over to look past the shoji screen, trying to get a quick glance of you.
He couldn’t help but take note of you as you walked around and served the other patrons. The restaurant wasn’t busy tonight, so your movements were more fluid, with a smoother flow, rather than rushed and on your toes when the restaurant was packed.
It was enticing, even though he knew he could never be in that position— but you always made it look so easy with your welcoming demeanor.
Eventually, you headed over to his table at the back with a tray in hand.
“Here’s your pho go. I got dad to add extra chili just how you like it.” you placed the bowl of hot, steaming pho on the table in front of him. The delicious aroma was irresistible.
“And tea!” You placed a teapot with a cup next to the bowl, along with some cutlery and napkins.
“Thank you,” he said, glancing up at you with a smile. He knew the tea would be divine as always. “Pass along my compliments to your dad, yeah?”
“Always,”
“Perfect,” he started taking a spoonful of the pho, blowing the steam away before he brought it up to his lips and took a sip. He let the pho sit on his tongue to savour the flavour; it was definitely something different but still incredible. “You’re a damn good waitress, you know that.”
“I’m just…doing my job when I can,” you said meekly.
“Well, you do it damn well, if anything,” a thought erupted in his mind, wondering about your love life. He never saw you with a partner, even if he saw a glimpse of your life.
Even if it felt a little invasive, he was conflicted on whether he should ask you or not, especially with the small relationship you’ve built over the months of talking.
He knew he should hold his tongue about it, but he took the risk and asked anyway, before his doubts overtook him. “You got a boyfriend or anything,”
“Sorry?”
Oh God, don’t make him repeat himself.
“Come on, a boyfriend? Any guy at all that you’re seeing?” He always imagined asking the question with a better, more smooth delivery— not like this. Nevertheless, he was glad the question was out of the way now.
“Nope,” you said. Despite the newfound revelation, a part of him made him doubt that you would even give him a chance, given his status.
You probably only saw him as the famous baseball star who was a regular at your father’s restaurant with a big ego. Although the latter wasn’t completely wrong, he knew he was more than that but he was unsure if you were curious to explore more, like he was.
“Ah, single then, are you?” Even with his lingering doubts, there was still a sense of satisfaction with your answer, maybe some underlying hope now that he knew you weren’t seeing anyone. “I was starting to believe you’d have line of guys at your feet,”
Whether it was true or not— and he really hoped it was the latter— he didn’t want to further broach the thought of other men trying to flirt with you. He was aware of how selfish that must’ve sounded, hence why he tried to keep his feelings in check.
“Yeah…heard of that one before,”
“Heh, just trying to compliment you,” he quipped. “No need to shoot down every word that comes out of my mouth,”
He caught a playful eye roll from you as he resumed eating, taking another spoonful of the pho and relishing its taste.
He could taste the slight kick from the chili just the way he liked it. It made him wonder if you remembered other small details about him, but he quickly brushed it off before he started speculating other scenarios.
After another spoonful, he asked, “So, when do you close?”
“We’re not closing until another hour,”
“Right, right. Just another hour,” he said with a hum, continuing on the pho in front of him. “And I’m guessing you’re aren’t gonna sit down and keep me company,”
“Yeah, probably not…”
“Ouch, you’re breaking my heart here.” He teased, clenching his chest to add emphasis to his feigned hurt. “You’d rather run around catering to other people than keep this baseball player company.”
“Well you've got your tea to keep you busy,” you shot back, your teasing words matching his wittiness.
He chuckled at that, giving the tea that was sitting besides his bowl a pointed gaze. “Yeah, ‘cause it’s a great listener,” he said sarcastically.
“Oh, for sure. Totally silent and won’t interrupt you and such.”
He let out a scoff, but his amused smile was still present on his face. “Yeah, smartass. Keep it up and I might decide to stay here all night.”
You arched a brow at that. “We’ll see what dad has to say about that.”
“Please,” his lips curled into a smirk. “If anything, he’ll probably beg me to stay. The tips I give are probably the only reason this place is still in business.” He knew full well how much your dad loved serving him and having him around, and not just because of the hefty tips he gave everytime.
It’s not often that Kenji let his insecurities get the best of him. Matter of fact, it was so rare, the feeling was almost foreign to him.
He wouldn’t let them overshadow his confidence, especially when he needed it the most on the field when there were hundreds and hundreds of eyes on him in real-time or when he’s doing his Ultraman duties with the citizens relying on him to keep them safe.
But being in a situation like this felt like navigating a complex maze where he has no sense of direction. Whenever he was with you, Kenji felt like the doubts in his head were a little louder than usual, and he was worried that one day, his blasé mask would slip away.
“You know, he was on my case last time when I was hanging around your table.” You commented.
“Oh really? You think he’s afraid of losing his regular customer to a pretty waitress? I won’t ditch him anytime soon. Gotta show my appreciation to these heavenly meals, you know,”
“I think he’s more concerned about me hitting on you,”
Kenji froze momentarily, the spoonful of the noodles halfway to his mouth, before he looked up at you with genuine surprise. “Wait wait wait— he seriously thinks you’d try making a move on me?” The thought alone seemed too baffling for him to comprehend.
“Yes, he does,”
A small chuckle escaped him before it morphed into a full blown laughter. He noticed through his teary eyes that you still held your serious expression. “That’s-” he began, taking a deep breath to compose himself. “Oh wow…your old man actually thinks you’re after me?”
Although the claim sounded comical hearing it out loud, Kenji hoped that there was some truth to it—even if he did disguise his hope with his laugh just now.
Just the thought of him catching your eye like that made something in him stir with a spark of excitement and nervousness.
“Unfortunately, and that’s all he talks about,” you finished your sentence with a groan. Kenji wondered how you really felt about the situation. Were you truly denying any interest, or was there something you’re holding back?
“He’s been talking to you about me, then, has he? About how you’re all falling for my charms and such?”
“Urgh, I don’t even want to feed that idea into his head,”
“But why not?” He leaned forward on his chair with his arms resting against the table. “I’m sure this whole thing is giving him a good laugh,” It was quite charming seeing the dynamic between you and your father and how your father felt about your interaction. Though he really hoped that he wasn’t temperamental about it.
“More like another reason to be on my case…I’ve already stressed him out for giving the wrong order to a few customers this week alone,”
He recalled one incident that had been going around the dining area. “Right…didn’t you give a guy beef noodles when he was supposed to get pork instead?”
You pressed your lips together in mild annoyance at the reminder, and he chuckled at your quiet response.
“Yeah. Poor fella probably had a fit once he realised what happened. I’m sure you had an earful from your dad after that,” he add
Just at that moment, another customer entered the restaurant, and you were already on your toes to serve them a table.
There was a flicker of disappointment in his eyes at the interruption; he was really enjoying your conversation, but of course, your job comes first.
“Duty calls, huh?” You nodded in silent response. “Go on then, go play nice and serve your customers.”
The male customer trotted over to an empty table, trying to hide the clumsiness in his steps. Kenji was never superstitious, but something about that man just at first glance rang all alarm bells in him.
He couldn’t pinpoint what it was, but his instincts were telling him to keep a close eye on the interaction and stay on high alert.
The longer he watched the the conversation between you and the newcomer, the more he could pick up on his behaviour.
His crooked smile, his relaxed yet provocative body language, and his slight slurred speech all pointed to him being intoxicated.
The man’s presence disrupted the calm atmosphere in the room, and Kenji couldn’t help but find himself on edge.
As you left for the kitchen to fetch his order, Kenji didn’t miss the man staring at your backside. It was obvious that he was eyeing your body like a shark sizing up it’s prey.
Kenji’s protective instinct kicked into overdrive, making him clutch the spoon in his hand hard enough to leave a dent on his palm.
He continued to watch as you returned from the kitchen, only to be met with the obnoxious patron who was getting more unruly by the minute. Kenji couldn’t hear the conversation from where he was sitting, but he could tell that you were uncomfortable.
You maintained your forced smile through your nervousness, and he could only seethe from his seat.
It took every ounce of willpower not to step in and cause a scene.
But something in him snapped the moment the man reached out and tried stroking her leg. All the tension he had held back boiled over.
In a swift motion, he stood up from his seat, the chair scraping against the wooden floor with a loud screech. He strode over towards the table, each step fueled with purpose and irritation.
He placed a hand on your shoulder and felt you jolt from the sudden contact.
“Come here,” he muttered, his voice gentle yet firm.
“What?”
“Just come closer,” he urged, the grip on your shoulder growing slightly tighter. Despite his calm exterior, his eyes betrayed his irritation.
You did as you was told and moved towards him. Immediately, he pulled you close and wrapped a protective arm around your waist, making sure you were behind him, shielding you from the man’s lecherous gaze with his athletic frame.
In the deepest pit of his gut, he felt a tinge of nervousness having been this close to you and having his arm around you. He always imagined what it would be like to be in this position but not in a situation like this.
But he brushed that thought aside as he looked down at the man, his eyes narrowed into slits. His voice instantly dropped to a dangerous tone, dripping with menace. “You got a problem?”
The man didn’t seemed fazed, still maintaining his lopsided grin, which only fueled his irritation further. “Nah, just having fun with the waitress here,”
Kenji felt his gut twist as the man’s spoke. ‘Fun.’ The word echoed in his head “Well, your fun ends here.”
“What, you got a problem with a guy just having a good time? Look at her, she loves the attention.” The man tried to lean to the side so he could take a look at you, but Kenji immediately blocked his view.
“She clearly doesn’t want anything to do with you,”
“You her boyfriend or something?” The customer sneered.
Kenji felt you tense behind him at that question. A part of him wanted to claim that title— not only to get the man to back off, but also to finally say it out loud, just to see how it felt like on his tongue.
But feeling how you tensed up made him second guess, so he kept his answer vague. “It doesn’t matter if I am her boyfriend or not, you’re going to leave her alone now.”
The man was completely oblivious to Kenji’s mounted annoyance. Kenji was surprised he didn’t recognise him, but that could be the alcohol completely skewing his judgment. Kenji leaned in so he was forced to focus on him.
“Eyes on me,” his voice sharpened, a hot razor blade. “She's not for you to touch or ogle, do you understand?”
The drunk man’s bravado evaporated under Kenji’s intense glare. He realised that continuing to provoke him would only lead to more trouble. He shifted in his seat before standing up unsteadily.
“Fine, fine I get it. She’s yours. No need to get all territorial, man.” The man muttered before staggering out of the restaurant, his balance wavering as he walked.
Once he was out of sight, the restaurant slowly resumed to its usual buzz and the patrons turned their attention back to their food. Though there was still a lingering awkwardness in the room that was hard to ignore.
Kenji’s attention shifted back to you, his fury melting into concern. You still look shaken and he could feel your muscles still taunt from the encounter.
His voice lowered to a softer tone, a mix of concern and protectiveness. “You alright?”
It took a moment before you could respond, your voice barely above a whisper but still audible enough for him to hear. “Y-yeah…I think so,”
Kenji could still send the remnants of fear lingering in your eyes and notice the slight tremor in your frame. The shock of the incident was still fresh and you were still trying to process what had just happened to you.
“I think I might close up early for the night,” you said, and he nodded in understanding. The whole ordeal must’ve taken a toll on you and you probably weren’t in the right state of mind to continue serving.
“Let me help you,” he offered.
“You don’t have to. Your pho…” you started, but he waved off your concern. His only focus was to make sure you were comfortable.
“Forget about that, it’s cold anyways. I’m helping you, no arguments.” He insisted firmly, leaving no room for debate in his tone.
Without waiting for a response from you, he reluctantly let go of you, wishing he could hold you a bit longer.
Fortunately, the place was quiet tonight and there were only a few customers scattered around finishing off their meals. He approached them one by one and politely asked them to finish up and head out, explaining the place was closing early.
As he waited for the place to clear out, his gaze lingered back on you as you started cleaning up the counter and counting the tip jar. You were uncharacteristically stiff and mechanical. Seeing you like this made his chest ache.
He wondered how often these things happened to you while you were on the clock. This was the first time he had witnessed anything like that, and he hated that some jackass ruined your night after seeing how relaxed you were earlier.
A few minutes later, once the last customer had walked out, Kenji returned to you, vigilant. “They’re all gone now.”
You didn’t meet his eyes, too stunned to focus on anything other than the floor. His chest tightened at the sight. “My dad’s gonna be pissed,”
“Why would he be pissed? It’s not your fault some drunk guy was harassing you.” He took a step closer, trying to study your expression.
You let out a solemn sigh, enough for him to feel the weight of your worry. He wanted to reach out and comfort you, but he knew you probably didn’t want to be touched right now.
“Hey, look at me.”
You glanced up at him briefly, then quickly interjected before he could speak, “You should uhm…finish off your pho. Don’t want it to get wasted, huh?” You quickly added, “Do you like dorayaki?”
He paused, surprised by your sudden change of topic. He couldn’t tell if it was a coping mechanism from your distress, but he appreciated your attempt to lighten the mood. “Dorayaki? Yeah, I love them,”
“Let me give you one…it’s on the house for helping me.” Before he could respond, you were already heading to the front counter where the dorayaki were displayed.
You wrapped one in a napkin and handed it to him. He accepted it gracefully, wrapping his large hand around the treat. “You sure your dad won’t get mad at you for giving away free food,”
“I don’t think he’ll notice anyway,” you said. “Plus, he’ll probably do the same, being his favourite baseball player and all.”
“Oh, so I’m the favourite, huh?” He unwrapped the dorayaki and took a bite. “Well, I had to admit, your dad’s got good taste in baseball,”
“Yeah…don’t see why he’d have an issue with me hitting on you, if that was the case, considering how much he admires your game play and such.”
“Can't blame him for being protective of you. I wouldn’t want some cocky bastard hitting on you either,”
“Oh, so you admit that you’re a bastard,”
“Guilty as charged, but I’m the kind of bastard that knows how to treat a girl right. Unlike those idiots that only see you as a piece of meat,”
He paused, recalling the incidents from earlier. He didn’t want to mull over what could’ve happened if things turned out differently. “I’m just glad I was here tonight. I wasn’t going to let some asswipe take advantage of you.”
A sudden outburst could be heard from the kitchen before the back door slammed open, revealing your father’s hardened face.
You stood upright, preparing for the confrontation. “Baba…”
You dad eyed both of you and he could almost feel the suspicion rising from him. His voice was gruff with a protective anger, “What is going on here?”
“It’s not what it looks like. I had to close the shop half an hour early,” you said quickly.
“And what’s the reason for that?”
Kenji took this opportunity to step in before things escalated further, not wanting you to revisit the story again. “Because some drunkard was harassing her. She felt uncomfortable and decided to close up early for safety reasons.”
Your dad’s attention darted at Kenji, a flicker of surprise crossing his face. He was used to people recognising him along with the shocked and awestruck look on their faces when they see him. But the way you dad was looking at him was something new, and he didn’t know how to react in the situation.
He quickly looked back at you and asked, “Is it true? Someone was messing with you?”
“Yeah…he touched me,” you said before gesturing to Kenji, “but Kenji stopped it from escalating,”
Your father still seemed guarded as he asked, “You stepped in?”
“Yeah, I did. I wasn’t going to stand by and watch her get harassed,”
You father’s gaze flickered between the two of you, his earlier suspension giving way to grudging respect. He was aware of Kenji’s reputation, both on and off the field. If the pro-baseball player had intervened, it must’ve meant the situation was serious enough to warrant it.
You picked up on your dad’s hesitation. “Baba, I was never trying to make a move on Kenji. You can even ask him,”
For some odd reason, Kenji felt his heart quicken at your words. Hearing you actually mentioning it to your father felt almost cathartic.
Kenji felt his eyes on him again, almost looking for confirmation from him. Kenji nodded, keeping his voice level, despite his senses going haywire right now, “She’s telling the truth, nothing inappropriate is going on between us,”
The room seemed to relax as your father’s tense demeanor faded. Perhaps after hearing it from Kenji himself was enough to convince him.
“Alright, I just wanted to make sure that nothing is going on behind my back,” he said. “Looks like I have to pack everything away in the kitchen,”
“I’m sorry, Baba.”
“It’s not your fault, don’t apologise. I’m just glad you’re okay,”
Your father looked back at Kenji, his expression more sincere now. “And I guess I owe you a thanks for stepping in and saving the day,”
“I gave him free dorayaki,” you chimed in.
“Ah, rewarding him with food, huh? That’s my girl.” He turned back to Kenji and stuck his hand out.
“I appreciate you looking out for her, son. Thank you.” He gave Kenji a firm handshake, though the word ‘son’ had struck him more than he let on, sending an odd feeling through his body. He didn’t think hearing another father calling him that would affect him.
Though he simply nodded, his expression was sincere, “No problem. I wouldn’t have let anything bad happen to her,”
He was still taken back by the unexpected term of endearment from your dad, cutting through his usual confidence. Memories of his own strained relationship with his father flickered in his mind, something he hadn’t confronted with for a while.
Your father gave you both a final nod before he headed back to the kitchen to finish off the last bits of closing.
Kenji maintained his gaze on the back door where you dad just exited, his mind now racing. He started speculating on how different things would be now, and more importantly, how you felt about the situation.
“What’s with that face?” You voiced snapped him out of his deep trance. He didn’t realise how silent he had been until you spoke up.
He turned back to look at you, “I just can't get over the fact that you dad seems to consider me a hero for saving you today,” he said jokingly, though there was some truth to it.
It was refreshing to be seen as more than just a star player; your father saw him for his character and actions. Even if it was just a brief glimpse, gaining your father’s trust and respect felt like a significant accomplishment— something he hadn’t achieved with his own father.
“I can’t believe he called you son, eugh.” Kenji couldn’t believe it either, still hung up on that moment. The gratification still felt fresh, and he hoped that feeling would last.
“Yeah, that too. Seems like he’s accepted me into the family,” he smiled.
“Oh God…” you groaned, massaging your temple to emphasise your feigned exasperation.
“Don’t worry, I won’t take offense to it. I actually find it entertaining.”
“Yeah, that’s one way of putting it,” you said.
It was definitely more than that to him, given the gravity of the situation with his own father.
But he wasn’t going to admit that to you. Maybe one day he’d share more of his family life with you, now that he seemed to be more than just a customer here.
“You know, it’s actually kind of amusing how you’re so bothered by this,” he mused.
“I think you got on his good side, so good for you.”
“Oh, I think I’ve got more that just his good side,”
“What do you mean?”
His smile morphed into a full grin, “Well I just saved his daughter from being harassed. He’s probably thinking of seeing me as a potential son-in-law.”
Shit, why did he say that. Did he sound weird?
You grumbled. “Don’t get excited now,”
Seeing your grumpy expression gave him some relief. It was better than seeing you disturbed. Then again, you were probably used to his teasing by now, so he couldn’t be too surprised.
“Relax, I’m not getting my hopes up…”
Lies.
“…I know you’re not swooning over me like your dad thinks,”
“But I’m pretty sure he’s noticed the way you freeze everytime I look at you when you come into the restaurant,”
He almost choked on his own saliva when you said that. He didn’t think that you’d notice, but now that you had, he wondered how obvious he was.
“I…don’t do that. I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he mentally cursed himself for stuttering. No one had this much of an effect on him, and he didn’t know how to act.
“Just the other day, a man scolded at you for holding the queue,” you commented. Of course you would remember that.
“Alright, fine. I admit it. Maybe I do get a bit distracted sometimes when you look at me. But can you blame me?”
You covered your mouth to hide your snickering, holding back from laughing too hard. “Wow…I didn’t think you were that whipped,”
He huffed at that but he wasn’t going to deny it, even if it did hurt his pride. He knew he was more than just whipped; with those pretty eyes and beautiful smile, you could make him do just about anything.
“Yeah, okay. Laugh it all you want,” he muttered. He didn’t expect you to lean in towards him, invading his line of sight.
Oh no…you were more breathtaking up close.
“Hmm, I might be tempted to drag this out a little, just to see how far you’ll go.” You said, a small smile hinting a tease.
He swallowed thickly before he spoke, mirroring your tone, “Oh, really? You’re gonna make me work for it?”
He wouldn’t mind that if it meant spending more time with you. Every interaction with you was exhilarating and he would take the chance if it meant taking things further with you outside of your work.
The positive interaction with your father gave him a much-needed boost of confidence. If your father trusted him, maybe you would, too.
“Well…what if we start things slow and I asked you to dinner then? I’ll do you good and take you somewhere fancy since you have good taste in food,”
Seeing the way your eyes light before you answered made his chest warm with gratitude. “That sounds nice actually….yeah, I’d like that,”

Hello lovely!! I saw requests were open but if i'm mistaken just ignore me lol, but if they are, i was wondering if i could request hcs for poly!lost boys with a free spirited s/o who is always traveling and exploring (think like young donna from mamma mia yk?) thank you again lovely <333
Thank you for the request! It's a fun one, and like, I definitely knew who donna was? (Is it alright to admit I've never seen Mamma Mia? Or is that like not done?) Anyway, thanks for the fun ask, and I hope you like this!😘
-----------------------
When I say you've travelled a lot, I mean a lot. You spent summer holidays backpacking through Europe and Asia, hitting several countries and enjoying the adventure tremendously.
Holidays do come to an end, however, so once you're back in the States, you decide to explore more of the state you live in. You didn't really have a plan, and the bustrip that was supposed to take you to San Francisco ended up with you being stranded in Santa Carla.
I am convinced that you met Paul first, probably while jamming with some musicians on the boardwalk. You danced and sang along, twirling around until you suddenly slammed into someone.
"Oh my god, I am so sorry!" You'd laugh, "Are you alright?" Paul would just grin, dragging you along in another dance. "Sure am, babe," he'd say, "but it would be even better if I get your name."
So that's how you get to know Paul, as a carefree, fun-loving guy - and you absolutely adore him. Through him, you meet the others.
"Oh my god, are these bikes yours?" Is probably along the first things you say to them. When they ask if you ride, you happily shake your head. "Nope, but I am certain I can!" Needless to say, they make sure to leave their keys in sight.
Later on, they do teach you how to drive, but none are quite comfy with you going off on your own since driving safety is not the first thing on your mind.
They run into you at the weirdest places. One time, they found you stuck in a tree. Another time, they found you lounging on the roof of a motel - the ladder you'd used to get on the roof had fallen, and you'd decided that sunbathing and stargazing was a very nice way to spend the day instead of doing groceries and such.
Marko absolutely adores the way you handle things, how you just enjoy life and can laugh about practically anything.
I am convinced you and Dwayne will bond over telling stories of adventures. You have a lot, and so does he and in the end the two of you could talk for hours.
You and David had to get used to each other for a bit, with him being way more controlled than you - and you being way more open and free in the way you acted. But once you connected over a story, or when you stumbled and fell into his arms - followed by some corny oneliner - the two of you get really close.
You fit in perfectly, within the groups dynamic. You're not quite as chaotic as Paul and Marko can be and definitely not as mysterious as the other two - so it definitely works out well.
David takes you to hidden gems around town and genuinely loves to accompany you when you're out exploring.
You find out they're vampires due to one of the long chats with Dwayne, and you hate to admit it, but you're really disappointed that they don't turn into bats.
The next morning you find a tiny bat charm laying on your pillow.
Once you know what they are, you definitely want to experience parts of their world. Not the feeding, perhaps, but the flying? Yes, absolutely.
Marko takes you out flying the first time and you have never felt more alive.
Overtime you begin to feel a little conflicted: you really like all of them, in a rather romantic way and eventhough it is rather simple in your head (just date all of them) you're just not sure if they'd be okay with that?
But when you awkwardly bring it up one night, the boys just grin. Everyone's in, and suddenly you've gained four boyfriends.
Dynamic wise, nothing changes, except you get the occasional ask if you want to turn into a vampire as well.
If you do, I am certain you spent the first couple of months exploring the town all over again with the boys, and then begging them to come along when you went out to explore the rest of the world because a) you had the time now and b) travelling and exploring while you're a vampire is so much more fun
David and Dwayne are always on alert when they hear you (or Paul or Marko) gleefully yell something along the lines of "Let's do it!" "Who cares!" Or "Fuck it!" Because it often means one of you will get stuck somewhere. Like a tree. Or a roof. Or under the boardwalk. Or in a fight with sharks. You get the drift ;)
Before I forget, you absolutely adore Marko's pigeons, and on world animal day you definitely give them little pigeontreats.

Seesaws and Stray Dogs
Pairing : Daryl Dixon x Negan's sister!reader
Genre : angst!! some comfort and fluff
Warnings : violence, gore, the lineup, mentions of Daryl's time as Negan's prisoner, guilt, toxic sibling relationship, please lmk if I missed anything!
Word count : 1.2k
Request (by anon) : "daryls wife coming out as negans sister how will everything unfold when she learns????"
A/N : I could definitely expand on this universe more in the future! Hope this is along the lines of what anon was looking for!
❀~~__~~❀~~__~~❀
The last time you'd seen your brother, it ended in yells and tears. You were furious to find how he'd been treating his wife, the same wife that was wasting away each day. You'd told him, "Don't call me." And left his apartment. He didn't have much of a reaction, that stone cold expression, never meeting your eyes. But he'd stayed true to your request, and hadn't called ever again.
When the world turned upside down and the dead began roaming, you figured he was dead. Of course you still cared for him, had fond memories of seesaws and stray dogs. But you couldn't stand to think of the person he'd become, so it was easier to believe he was dead. To mourn, and then move on.
And move on, you did. You found a group, a group that quickly became family. To add, you even found love.
Daryl is a big heart hidden behind a gruff exterior, and he stole your heart before you even knew it. After months of pining, you finally threw in the towel and kissed him. It was clunky and awkward but it made your heart grow ten sizes. It wasn't long before he'd found a ring for you. A simple thing, a dainty band with a small green gem in the center. It isn't much visually, but it means the world to you.
Now, on the worst day of your life, you twirl the ring anxiously around your finger over and over. Beside you, Maggie trembles, pale and sweaty. A little further down the line is Daryl. He's hurt, bleeding and doubled over. You want to crawl to him, to stretch your body over his and protect him. Let his blood seep into your clothing. But you can't, you know that. Around you, the saviors keep alert, waiting for someone to act out of line. For someone to give them a reason. You won't.
And then the trailer door snaps open. "Pissing our pants, yet?" At first, you think you're hallucinating. Some sick and twisted trick your brain is playing on you. There's no way that your brother is the big bad wolf.
But then he sees you, and he laughs. A big, hearty laugh that crinkles the corners of his eyes. And then he's strutting over to you, bat swinging at his side. "Holy...shit!" He exclaims, leaning down to face you eye-to-eye. You meet his eyes, searching them. In your peripheral, you see Daryl begin to struggle, trying to reach you. You want to tell him that it's okay, that this is your brother, but you're not sure that's even true anymore. Who has he become? "Definitely did not expect to see you here!" Negan bellows, a happy grin on his face.
You can feel the confused gazes surrounding you, both from your friends and his. You don't dare look away from him, eyes steely and jaw set. But still, your hands move on their own accord, twirling the ring over and over. "Now this here...is an absolute plot twist! That is my baby sister, y'all!" He looks at your hands, at the ring you obsessively touch. "Oh! Now don't tell me my little sister is married to one of these pricks!" Daryl squirms.
"I am, not that it's any of your business." You spit. Negan twirls around, giving the lineup a good once over.
"Now wait! Don't tell me! Let me guess." He walks back and forth, exaggeratedly rubbing his chin in mock-thought. He stops in front of Rick, glancing to see your reaction. You don't move. And then Glenn, but when Maggie cries out, he swiftly moves on. Right to Daryl. You swallow harsh, holding your breath as he raises his bat to him. "I think I hit the jackpot! Get up, kid. Come sit next to your husband." You stand on shaky feet, sending one last lingering glance to Maggie before stumbling your way to Daryl.
When you reach him, falling to your knees, he shuffles forward, hiding you behind his frame. Negan laughs at the display. "Well, now that we've got that settled, let's get started!"
When all is settled and done, you can't look away from the patch of dirt and leaves you're perched on. Because if you do, you'd see your friends. Abraham and Glenn, or what's left of them. A mangled mess of gore, the soil below drinking their blood and tinging a crimson red. And you'd see that he's gone. Your love, ripped from you as you kicked and cried and screamed. You're not sure how long you sit, staring at the ground. But night turns into morning.
And then Maggie stumbles toward her husband. All the girls leap up, yourself included. You, Sasha, Rosita all help Maggie. Like some kind of widows club, you think bitterly.
There's a sense of guilt too, that this blood was spilled by someone of your own. That the same evil that runs through him could be in your veins, too. Rick can hardly meet your eyes.
In shame, you exile yourself to Hilltop with Maggie and Sasha. There's nothing for you in Alexandria anymore. You knew Negan wouldn't hurt you, but everyone else was free game and you didn't want to be there to see it. Let him believe you were dead. Maybe then he'd let Daryl go.
Hilltop is where you and Daryl reunite. It was somewhere around a week after the lineup, a week of hell for everyone. Daryl was weakened, beat and starved and sleep deprived. He practically falls into your arms.
The tears roll freely as your hands roam over his back, confirming that he's really there. Really with you. You're overcome with a strange mix of gratitude and guilt. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." You cry into him, tears staining his shoulder. He doesn't say anything, but he squeezes you tightly. That says more than words.
That night, as you both ready for bed, Daryl tells you all that he went through at the hands of your brother. You run your hands over the fresh bruises and the aged scars. "I'm sorry. I thought he was dead." You mumble, pressing a kiss to his bare shoulder. The dim light of the lamp casts an intimate glow over the two of you.
"He will be." Daryl grunts, but then he timidly adds. "...if ya want him to be." You know he's no stranger to a morally gray (or rather morally black) brother. His own brother was once his enemy too.
"I don't know, honestly. He's my brother but he hasn't been the same since even before all this." You sigh. "I wish things were different." The things Negan has done, they're unforgiveable. And yet, he may be the only blood you have left in the world. Doesn't that mean something?
You settle into the bed next to Daryl, wrapping your arms around his frame. His skin is warm and comforting against your own. Familiar. You begin to doze off, feeling safe knowing he's here with you, but before you reach sleep, you hear him. "Me too."
At that, you make a promise to yourself. You won't let your brother hurt Daryl anymore, no matter the cost. No one, including Negan, will take Daryl from you ever again.

Hello friend-o! I'm unsure if you're currently taking requests, so if you aren't, please pay this no mind! If you are, I hope you consider this little idea I have that I'm too lazy to write myself. 😅
What about a pining Ruffilo? Y/N asks him to go yet again to the bookstore even though they both know she doesn't need anymore, and yet he follows along with whatever she wants to do because seeing her happy makes him happy. Even though he's at his freaking limits and finally combusts in the middle of their day to tell you how he feels. The fluffier the better, and it doesn't even have to be this exactly. Really just want a pining Ruffilo. 💕
Hope you're well!
A/N: Hello, hope you are doing good aswell! I love that request... Actually I was thinking about writing something along those lines. Sooo... I'm excited! Hope you like it!

You took a deep breath as you let your hand wander over the books in front of you while your friend, Nick, followed you calmly.
Nick had always been the quiet type, content to stay in the background and observe the things around him. But when it came to you, he couldn't help but be drawn into the whirlwind of emotions that swirled inside him. He had been madly in love with you the moment he saw you.
It had been almost ten months since he realized his feelings for you, and he did everything he could to show it, even if you didn't notice it.
Every two weeks, almost like clockwork, one of you would suggest a visit to the local bookstore. If you were honest to yourself you actually didn’t need any more books and if Nick would have been honest to himself, he definitely didn’t have the time to go look for new ones with you at the moment. He had lots of things to do at home, but he just couldn’t help it.
He'd make excuses, rearrange his schedule, and cancel plans if necessary just to spend time. For you, he'd always made an exception.
Little did you know, those visits to the bookstore were more than just casual hangouts for Nick. They were a way for him to be close to you, to watch you as you browsed through the shelves, your eyes lighting up with excitement when you found a book that sparked your interest.
"Nick? Could you help me with this?" You asked your friend, looking at him with apologetic eyes while reaching above you for another book.
Nick quickly step behind you and before you knew his hand was on your waist while reaching up to grab the book. Even though this were well known touches to you, you couldn’t help but shiver lightly.
You might love books but when you were honest with yourself, you just wanted to spend time alone with Nick and the bookstore had been the perfect excuse since the others weren’t really fond of going every two weeks.
You were comfortable around Nick. Your favourite part of your little book "dates" were when you set down in your favourite corner and read together.
But before you did so, you tried to find a book that he would like too, so you flipped through the pages of a new release. Nick on the other hand couldn't help but admire your passion for literature. He'd memorized your favorite authors, your preferred genres, and the way you'd smile when you discovered a hidden gem. To him, your happiness was all that mattered.
Tumblr media
Not even an hour later you found yourselves in your favourite reading corner together. The soft sunlight from this early evening filtered through the windows, casting a warm, golden hue on the pages of the book in your hands.
As always, you were sitting in front of Nick, your back against his chest. At first you had suggested this position, so he could see the pages better, but with time it became more to the both of you. It was your small excuse to be close to each other.
You held the book in your hands, while Nick's arms were slung around you, sometimes drawing small circles on your waist, causing you to fall even deeper in this arms.
Nick's attention was divided between the words on the pages and the feel of your presence so close to him. He couldn't help but admire the way your hair caught the sunlight, creating a halo of warmth around you.
Your laughter and the sound of you turning pages filled his heart with contentment.
When you read together it always felt like you were in your own little bubble. You connected even deeper while it was clear to everyone around you, that you were both madly in love with each other. But you didn’t let the outside destroy your little thing, making sure it was the pace you wanted your whole relationship to go.
As you set there, devouring the words in front of you, Nick couldn’t help it anymore. He couldn’t ignore the desire building within him any longer.
So, without even thinking, he leaned down, his lips gently brushing against the back of your neck.
You instantly stopped in your tracks and took a deep breath while goose bumps started to form on your neck. After two to three kisses, you closed the book and turned a bit in his arms to face him.
"Nick," you whispered, your voice almost sounding like a soft invitation to him.
Unable to resist any longer, Nick cupped your face in his hands and leaned in, capturing your lips in a tender kiss. It was a kiss filled with all the emotions you two had kept hidden for so long - love, longing, and the promise of a future together.
Time seemed to stand still as you lost yourselves in that moment, your hands finding each other, fingers entwined, as you shared your first kiss.
It was a kiss that spoke of all the unspoken words, of the countless moments you had spent together in this corner of the bookstore, of the feelings that had finally found their way into the open.
When you finally pulled away, your foreheads touched, and you shared a knowing smile. "I've wanted to do that for so damn long," Nick admitted, his voice filled with honesty.
You chuckled softly, everything in your stomach still tingled and your eyes were sparkling with happiness. "Me too, Nick."
„Really?" He asked, stroking your cheek with his hand, not daring to pull away from you. "Obviously, how could I not?"
Nick began to smile.
In that corner of the bookstore, surrounded by the worlds contained within the pages of countless books, Nick and you had discovered a love story of your own. And it was a story that was just beginning, with countless chapters waiting to be written.

In the dimly lit corridors of the Volturi castle, Marcus moved with an air of quiet contemplation. His presence was often overlooked by those who were consumed with their own ambitions and intrigues. Yet, his gift of sensing emotional ties among individuals allowed him a unique perspective on the world around him.
One day, as he made his way through the grand hallways, his attention was drawn to the entrance of the castle. There, a new intern secretary had just arrived, replacing the previous one who had met a gruesome end. Marcus watched from a distance, his crimson eyes focused on the young woman who had captured his attention.
The moment their eyes met, a surge of emotion flooded through Marcus. It was a feeling he hadn't experienced in centuries, a deep and powerful connection that reached beyond his usual sense of emotional bonds. He stood there, rooted to the spot, as he realized the truth—this young woman was his mate.
His heart, which had long been dormant, seemed to awaken within his chest. The mate bond between them was stronger than anything he had felt before, a tether that bound them together across time and space. Marcus was moved, both surprised and thankful, that fate had granted him another chance at love.
As he watched her navigate her new role within the castle, he kept his distance, his emotions a mixture of anticipation and restraint. He knew the dangers that surrounded them all, the complexities of their world that often led to heartbreak and loss. But this time, he was determined. He silently promised himself that he wouldn't allow history to repeat itself.
Over the days that followed, Marcus observed her from afar, a mix of longing and caution in his gaze. He kept his new discovery hidden, knowing that revealing such a bond could attract unnecessary attention. He continued to perform his duties, all the while his thoughts and emotions were intertwined with hers.
As time passed, Marcus found himself drawn to her presence more and more. The connection between them grew stronger with each passing day, a force that couldn't be denied. He felt the weight of centuries lifting from his shoulders, replaced by the hope and possibility of a future he had thought he might never experience again.
In the shadows, Marcus remained patient, his love and determination hidden beneath his stoic exterior. He knew that their journey would be filled with challenges and obstacles, but he was prepared to face them all. For in this young intern secretary, he had found his mate, a connection that transcended the darkness of their world and promised a new chapter in his immortal existence.
As the days passed and Marcus's connection with (y/n) grew stronger, he found himself unable to suppress his feelings any longer. He knew that he had to tell her the truth—the truth about the mate bond that bound them together. He couldn't deny the intensity of his emotions, the longing he felt for her presence.
One evening, as the sun set and cast warm hues across the grand halls of the Volturi castle, Marcus found (y/n) in a quiet corner of the library. He approached her with a mix of anticipation and trepidation, his crimson eyes focused on her as he cleared his throat.
"(y/n)," he began, his voice a gentle rumble, "may I speak with you?"
Startled, she looked up from the book she had been reading, her gaze meeting his. A blush crept across her cheeks as she nodded, her fingers nervously clutching the pages of the book.
"Of course, Master Marcus. What can I do for you?" she asked softly.
He took a moment to gather his thoughts, his emotions swirling within him. He reached out to gently take her hand in his, a silent gesture of comfort and connection.
"I want to share something with you," he said, his voice low but steady. "Something that has been on my mind since the day you arrived."
Her heart began to race, her curiosity piqued. She looked into his eyes, sensing that there was something significant he was about to reveal.
"You see," Marcus continued, "when I first laid eyes on you, I felt a bond—a deep and powerful connection that goes beyond what I've experienced before. (y/n), you are my mate."
His words hung in the air, a confession that held weight and meaning. Her eyes widened, her heart pounding within her chest. Her past experiences had left her cautious and guarded, especially when it came to matters of the heart.
"I understand if this is overwhelming," Marcus said gently. "But please know that I am not like your previous partner. I am not here to hurt you. I want to protect you, to be there for you in every way that I can."
She bit her lip, her emotions conflicting within her. She wanted to believe him, to trust that he meant what he said. But the fear of being hurt again held her back.
Marcus could sense her hesitation, her inner turmoil. With a soft sigh, he continued, "I understand that this is a lot to take in. Perhaps we can take it slow, allow our bond to grow at a pace that you are comfortable with. You have my word that I will always respect your feelings and your boundaries."
Touched by his sincerity and understanding, (y/n) felt a warmth spread through her chest. She looked into his eyes, searching for any signs of deceit. But all she found was honesty, vulnerability, and a genuine desire to make her feel safe.
"Thank you, Master Marcus," she said softly, her voice laced with emotion. "I appreciate your patience and understanding. I'm just... trying to navigate through my own fears."
“Please just call me Marcus,” he says before nodding and giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. "I will be here every step of the way, (y/n). We will face this journey together."
As the evening continued, they sat together in the library, sharing stories and getting to know each other. The library's soft ambiance provided a comforting backdrop to their conversation, and in that moment, they both realized that their bond was something worth exploring—a connection that held the promise of healing and a love that could stand the test of time.
After a few weeks of talking in secret Marcus got (y/n) to agree to a date. So now under the shimmering moonlight, Marcus and (y/n) strolled along a cobblestone path, their steps accompanied by the gentle rustling of leaves in the night breeze.
The stars adorned the velvety sky like diamonds, casting a soft glow over the surroundings as if nature itself was setting the stage for their romantic evening.
As they walked, their conversation flowed seamlessly from topic to topic. They spoke about literature, exchanging thoughts on classic novels and sharing their favorite authors. Marcus shared stories from his long life, giving (y/n) glimpses into different eras and cultures he had witnessed.
"I've always found solace in the words of poets and authors," Marcus said, his voice carrying a hint of nostalgia. "Literature has a way of capturing the human experience, of transcending time and connecting us to the emotions of those who came before us."
"I completely agree," (y/n) replied, her eyes sparkling as she listened to his words. "It's like stepping into different worlds and experiencing a multitude of emotions through the characters' journeys."
As the night deepened, they found themselves by a tranquil pond, its surface reflecting the moon's silvery glow. They settled on a comfortable spot beneath a tree, where a blanket had been laid out for them. A bottle of wine and glasses were placed nearby, casting a warm and inviting ambiance.
"(y/n), would you like some wine?" Marcus asked, pouring a glass for himself.
She nodded with a smile, accepting the glass he offered. They clinked their glasses together before taking a sip, the taste of the wine mingling with the atmosphere of the night.
Their conversation continued, becoming more intimate as the wine flowed. The air was filled with laughter and shared stories, their connection growing stronger with each passing moment.
As the night wore on, (y/n)'s cheeks grew flushed from the wine, and she looked at Marcus with a mixture of boldness and vulnerability.
"Marcus," she began, her voice soft and slightly slurred, "I've been wondering... Do you feel an attraction towards me?"
Marcus met her gaze, his eyes reflecting the moonlight. His lips curved into a gentle smile, and he nodded. "Yes, (y/n), I do."
Flushed and slightly flustered, she took a deep breath. "Well then... I'm not sure how to say this... But, Marcus, I want you to take me."
Marcus's eyebrows furrowed in surprise, his expression a mix of concern and curiosity. "Take you where, (y/n)?"
Her gaze remained steady as she said, "Take me, Marcus. I may be a little drunk, but my mind is clear enough to make this decision. I want to feel loved."
A moment of silence hung in the air as Marcus absorbed her words. He placed his glass aside and gently took her hand in his, his touch warm and reassuring.
"(y/n)," he says, his voice so soft that her name barley comes out as a whisper.
There was a sense of both nervousness and excitement that filled the air as Marcus leaned in closer and gave (y/n) a gentle kiss on her forehead. His touch felt warm and comforting, and (y/n) could feel her heart beating faster as their lips met.
His hands gently traveled down her body, exploring her curves and curves until he gently caressed her body and they embraced each other tightly.
Their passionate kisses were filled with so much emotion and desire as Marcus was a gentle, loving, and attentive lover. He explored every inch possible of (y/n)'s body with kisses and caresses, and as their bare skin met, (y/n) felt as if she was being surrounded by a powerful, consuming love.
“Come, not here.” He says scooping her up into his arms quickly and whisking them away to his bedroom. The bedroom door had just barely been closed before (y/n) found herself on the bed eyes wide and cheeks flushed red as she stared up at the towering volturi leader before her.
“If I’m to take you, then I must do it right.”

GAMEBOY
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:
Heeseung visits the same Gamestop every Tuesday and Thursday after his afternoon lecture. Not only because of the hidden gems he finds in the two for one sales bin, but also because of the insanely cute worker who just picked up that shift…
PAIRING: heeseung x fem!oc
GENRE: nonidol!au, college!au, slow burn, strangers to ???, fluff, angst (light)
WORD COUNT: 6.9k
AN: This is a special chapter for my Sunghoon smau “Diary of a Homewrecker” which you can read here :) You don’t need to read the smau to understand this fic. Can be read as x reader if you want, just change the name to y/n :)
Read part 2 here :))
Tumblr media
Everyone who knows Lee Heeseung knows that he’s not the most… romantic of people. Not to say he doesn’t try - the amount of rom coms in his Netflix “Watch again” section could put your average 15 year old girl to shame. But despite the amount of “research” he’s done, all Heeseung’s relationships tend to end before they even begin. Maybe some people just aren’t cut out for romance. And some people just don’t know when to quit…
Tumblr media
“I know you think I’m crazy but I promise you, we were flirting.” Heeseung repeats, for probably the 5th time since he got in the car. After years of friendship with the older boy, Jay knows it’s best to just hum and nod in agreement whenever Heeseung get’s like this. Heeseung is a handsome dude. So honestly, the chance of some random girl at their college campus flirting with him is quite large. But is it worth making this much of a fuss about it? Absolutely not.
This is how it always goes with Heeseung. He’ll show interest in someone, talk about them non-stop for a few days, go on a date or two if he’s lucky, before the whole thing ends within about a week. It’s a pattern the boys have become very familiar with - so much that there’s a shared schedule between the other 6 friends for who’s on “Heartbroken Heeseung Duty”.
Jay knows this won’t end any differently from the other times Heeseung has found “the one”. Hell, the whole world probably knows at this point. But with Heeseung being such a hopeless romantic and the glimmer of hope in his eyes as he recounts the story once again, Jay doesn’t have the heart to tell him.
Tumblr media
It’s not creepy. At least that’s what Heeseung tries to tell himself, as he walks through the sliding doors of the all-too-familiar Gamestop. He’s certainly no stranger to this place - the cream coloured brick and vibrant “For Sale” signs giving a sense of familiarity. Hell, this place is like a second home at this point. So why does Heeseung feel so anxious today?
Well for starters, it’s Friday. Which marks this momentous occasion as his third Gamestop trip this week. Although many would argue that Heeseung has a gaming addiction, three trips in one week is definitely a first.
Despite Heeseung’s life being what many would call a mess, he has very few routines that he absolutely swears by. Visit Gamestop on Tuesday after his lecture, pick out the games he wants to buy, and hide them at the very bottom of the sales bin. Then, once he gets paid Wednesday night, he’ll come back on Thursday to buy the games. That’s the way it’s been since he started university and it’s something he never planned on changing. That was until he saw her.
Now Heeseung never really paid much attention to the workers at Gamestop. They were usually socially awkward teens just trying to make a few bucks and therefore never stood out to him. Until this week…
Tumblr media
As soon as the familiar beep of the sliding doors rings through the air, Heeseung makes a b-line for the sales bin at the back of the store. The shop is as quiet as it normally is at 2pm on a Tuesday, leaving Heeseung to comfortably browse before having to pick Ni-ki up from school at 3.
Just as he is deciding between two games, he feels a presence come up behind him - making him internally groan at the thought of communication with another person. But a sudden cherry voice breaks through his sour mood, causing his ears to prick up at the melodic sound.
“Hi! Is there anything I can help you with today?”
Heeseung turns around to find himself face to face with one of the most beautiful women he’s ever seen. With big sparkling eyes and a grin that seems to light up the room - honest to god, if she weren’t standing right before his very eyes, he’d assume she wasn’t real. But as her head tilts in slight confusion - the bright smile not leaving her face, he releases that she is in fact real and he is in fact staring.
Clearing his throat nervously, Heeseung looks away from the girl - suddenly finding some co-op game on the shelf incredibly interesting. “J-just looking, thanks.” He manages to let out, mentally cursing himself for the stutter and waver in his voice.
The girl's smile seems to grow even more, if that’s even possible. Her eyes crinkle as she gently bows to Heeseung. “Ok, if you need anything don’t be afraid to ask. I’ll just be at the front desk.” She says before retreating to her former position.
Heeseung lets out the breath he didn’t realise he was holding as he watches her walk away. That had to be one of the most awkward interactions he’d had in a while. And yet, he’d do almost anything to experience it again. Because no amount of awkwardness could override the pure warmth he felt in the presence of the strange girl.

So here he stands on a Friday afternoon, mindlessly flicking through the games he has no intention of buying as his gaze focuses once again on the girl at the counter. Part of him is just happy to see her face. The way her eyes light up when a customer purchases a game she’s particularly interested in. The way she laughs and jokes around with her coworkers when the store’s a little quiet. But another part of him wishes it was him. That he’s the one she enthuses over games with. He’s the one making her laugh as if he’s just told the best joke of the decade. For now though, he’s more than happy just to watch.
It’s not creepy.
Tumblr media
“It is kinda creepy hyung.” Ni-ki mumbles from his position on the couch. Although his focus appears to be on the game he is currently playing, he couldn’t help but listen intently as Heeseung retold the events of his Gamestop trip.
“Hey! I’m not creepy!” Heeseung exclaims in offence, causing his younger friend to roll his eyes. “I never said you were creepy, just that your actions are.” Ni-ki states matter-of-factly. “Because you’d be so much better.” Heeseung bites back, ripping the controller out of his friend’s hand when the flashing “You Died” comes across the screen. Ni-ki scowls at his hyung as he lays back into the couch. “At least I can talk to girls.” He mumbles, thankful that his friend doesn’t hear the words.

A few weeks pass until Heeseung see’s who his friends have affectionately dubbed “Gamestop Girl” again. Not once in those weeks did she leave his mind; a pang of disappointment hitting his chest each time he entered the store, only to find some pimply high schooler instead. But boy, were those weeks of disappointment worth it for the image in front of him.
Heeseung didn’t think that she could get any brighter - any more perfect. Her warm and cheerful smile was now matched with the golden glow of her skin, indicating a possible vacation (which would explain her weeks of absence). Her hair, slightly longer than before though not enough for the regular person to notice. Heeseung noticed. To put it simply, she was absolutely breathtaking.
“Sale bin guy!”
The sudden exclamation breaks Heeseung out of his thoughts as he looks around the room for the origin of the sound. As his eyes land back on the girl, he sees her already looking at him with her familiar smile. That’s when it dawns on him that he is in fact “Sale Bin Guy”.
“Uh.. what?” Heeseung stutters out as she makes her way towards him. “You always come for the sale bin, right? There’s some nice hidden gems in there - I was actually just on my way to restock it.” She rambles on, walking to the back of the store where the bin is located. Heeseung’s feet seem to move on their own as he follows her to the back of the store.
“So, are you looking for anything particular today?” She asks as she begins filling the sale bin with all sorts of games. “I was kinda hoping you’d have Halo - one of my friend’s has been begging me to play.” He says, taking note of each game as she puts them in the bin. “We have Halo, not on sale though. It’s super popular so it’s usually full price unfortunately.” She says, sending him a quick sympathetic smile. Heeseung immediately decides he doesn’t like this smile as much.
“That’s why I haven’t got it yet, it doesn't really fit my broke college student aesthetic.” He jokes, feeling a sense of pride when she giggles a little. “Maybe if you weren’t buying the sale games every week you could save up for Halo.” She says, causing Heeseung to laugh sheepishly. “I’ve got a feral teenager at home who goes through games like he’s getting paid so… I’ll stick to the sale bin for now.” Heeseung says. Although it isn’t a joke, the girl laughs anyway and that sense of pride shoots through Heeseung once again.
The pair continue to make small talk as Heeseung looks through the games and he only suddenly realises that she’s wearing a nametag. Whilst trying to be as subtle as possible, he glances down at the tag and smiles as he reads the name - Ari.
Tumblr media
“Ari, huh?” Jay asks, not even remotely enthusiastic to be talking about his friend’s love life. This one has lasted much longer than the others, he’ll give him that. But it’s not like this has actually gone anyway either.
“Isn’t it just perfect?” Heeseung sighs, his lovestruck tone making Jay want to vomit. “And how many times have you spoken to her?” He asks, causing Heeseung to blush with embarrassment. “Well… technically twice. If you count the first one.” He mumbles, making Jay snicker. “And you’re already head over heels for her? That’s weird, even for you.” Jay says, making Heeseung roll his eyes.
“Didn’t you tell your ex that you loved them after like, 2 days?” Heeseung asks. Now it’s Jay’s turn to roll his eyes - his past relationship often being brought up in an attempt to prove a point. “At least I was dating them! What do you even know about this girl aside from where she works?” Jay asks, going back on topic.
Heeseung stays silent as the realisation hits that he, in fact, knows nothing about Ari. Well that certainly needs to change.
Tumblr media
“Can you request some games?” Heeseung asks, practically interrupting Ari as she went to greet him. She looks at him a little in shock before breaking out into her all familiar smile. “Well nice to see you too, what sort of thing are you after?” She asks. “Anything? I just got a Nintendo Switch and all I have is Super Smash Bros and this one about a cup.” Heeseung says, nervously rubbing the back of his neck. “Cuphead? Yeah that one can be kinda weird for new players.” Ari giggles slightly before taking Heeseung towards the switch games.
“Well, I’m certainly the girl you’re looking for; me and my switch are basically attached at the hip.” Ari jokes as she looks at the games they have lining the shelves. “You said you already have Smash Bros which would be one of my go-tos. Another would probably be Animal Crossing which you’ve no doubt heard of?” Ari asks, turning back to see Heeseung nod enthusiastically. “Yeah, so that’s super fun if you’re into more chill games. I personally find it very therapeutic but I can also spend all day playing it so you’ve gotta be careful.”
“Then there’s super well known games like Legends of Zelda, Sonic, and other Mario games. They’re the typical ones that you would get in a beginner switch pack. Zelda’s probably my favourite out of those ones but the others are good too.”
“There’s also a whole punch of Pokemon games. I’m probably not the best to recommend those since I know nothing about Pokemon aside from the fact that they’re cute. But I’ve heard they’re good so if you’re into that it’s worth a try.”
Heeseung honestly feels like he should be taking notes with the amount of information Ari is spitting at him. It’s very clear that she rambles when she gets excited, which Heeseung can’t help but smile at.
“So… see any you like?” Ari asks, beaming up at him as her rant comes to an end. “Uh… I’ll be honest I kinda blanked out. You’re just like… really cute.” Heeseung admits, mumbling the last part. If Ari heard it, she certainly acts like she didn’t as she playfully rolls her eyes at him. “How about you start with Animal Crossing and Zelda? Those are my favourites.” She suggests. “Plus, they’re on sale right now, so perfect for a broke college student.” She adds, a slight teasing tone in her voice. Heeseung just nods in agreement as he follows her up to the counter.
“I’m Heeseung by the way.” Heeseung suddenly says as she’s checking out his items. He’s not sure why he tells her his name - maybe it’s just an excuse to keep talking? “Nice to meet you Heeseung, I’m Ari but you probably already know that.” She says smiling. “Yeah… it’s a really beautiful name.” He says without thinking, causing her smile to widen as she thanks him.
“I’ll tell you what, Heeseung.” Ari says, grabbing a pen as his receipt starts to print out. Once printed, she flips over to the blank side and starts writing something down. “That’s my Nintendo ID and Discord. Animal Crossing can be multiplayer, so once you’ve established your island a little… I’d love to have a look.” She says.
Tumblr media
“I can’t believe you’re ditching us to play Animal Crossing with some chick.” Jake grumbles as he pushes his way into Heeseung’s apartment. Sunghoon quickly follows suit, sending Heeseung a disapproving look before sitting on the couch. “I literally see you guys all the time and I don’t know when I’ll get to play with her again. Don’t act like you guys wouldn’t do the exact same thing.” Heeseung rolls his eyes. “Jake wouldn’t know, he’s never had a girlfriend.” Sunghoon teases, causing Jake to shove his shoulder. “Says the guy who can’t even talk to his crush!” A mini fight breaks out between the boys, causing Heeseung to rub his temples in frustration.
“What are you guys even doing here? I text the groupchat this morning that I couldn’t come.” Heeseung says. “They’re here for me. Not everything’s about you, hyung.” Niki pokes his tongue at the oldest friend, causing Heeseung to roll his eyes yet again. “You’re right. How silly of me to think people came to my house to see me.” Heeseung says sarcastically. “Feel free to leave him wherever you’re going. It’d be nice to have my couch back.” Heeseung continues, picking up the pillow Niki sleeps with and throwing it at his youngest friend.
Once the guys have left the house, Heeseung lets out a sigh of relief at the sudden silence. The short amount of chaos from his friends managed to distract him from how nervous he is. He quickly glances at the clock on the wall - 5:50. 10 minutes until Ari’s shift finishes. 10 minutes until he’ll be showing her his progress in Animal Crossing.
Realistically, there’s nothing to be nervous about. He won’t be able to see her face so he can’t get distracted by her beautiful features. Plus he has the game to focus on and hopefully stop him from saying anything stupid. Everything will be fine.
Tumblr media
“Heeseung! Can you hear me?” Ari’s cheery voice blasts through his headphones, sending a spark of energy right to Heeseung’s heart. Ok, maybe everything won’t be fine. “I uh… yeah.” Heeseung manages, clearing his throat. “Ok cool. I’m just loading into your island. Where do you want to meet me?” She asks. “Um… I have a cherry blossom tree at the front of my island. I’ll wait there.” Heeseung says, smiling to himself as Ari goes on a mini rant about how cute the cherry blossoms are in the game.
As the two of them continue to explore Heeseung’s island, Ari seems to carry the conversation. She’s letting out praises for how well he’s done despite not playing that long, talking about her favourite parts of the island, and cracking jokes about certain villagers. Heeseung finds himself happily content with just listening to her, responding with hums of agreement and the occasional sentence when asked a question.
“Sorry, I know I talk a lot. You can tell me to shut up if I’m too annoying.” Ari jokes, causing Heeseung’s face to fall. Although she played it off as a joke, part of him thinks that she’s being serious. “Don’t apologize. I like listening to you talk. Especially since I suck at it.” Heeseung reassures. He hopes she knows he means it. The thought of someone like her thinking she’s annoying is just wrong.
“Ok. But I want you to talk too.” Ari says. “What should I talk about?” Heeseung asks, his nerves coming back now that he’s been put on the spot. “I just rambled about my childhood dog for 5 minutes cause a villager reminded me of him. You can talk about anything.” Ari assures.
So Heeseung rambles on about anything that comes to mind. University, work, his friends being stupid, even that one time he had to break into his own house because he accidentally threw his keys in the trash. The game became long forgotten as the two get caught up in learning more about each other.
Heeseung doesn’t even notice the time, until he hears the front door of his apartment open. Ni-ki soon walks into Heeseung’s room, eyes widening when he sees that he’s still talking to that girl.
“Oh? It’s my roommate.” Heeseung says into his mic, attempting to shoo Ni-ki out of his room. Dodging Heeseung’s waving arm, Ni-ki pulls the headphones off his head, yelling a quick hello into the mic before Heeseung fights him off. “Get out you rat.” Heeseung whisper-yells, adjusting the headphones so they’re back in their original position. The sound of Ari’s laughter quickly fills his eardrums, causing a dopey smile to spread across his face. “Simp.” Ni-ki scoffs before leaving to find something to eat.
“I’m guessing that’s the feral teenager?” Ari asks, causing Heeseung to sigh. “Yeah… he can be a lot. I guess I love him though.” Heeseung says, checking the time to see that it is in fact quite late. “I should probably go eat something. And make sure he doesn’t burn down my apartment.” Heeseung sighs, not wanting to stop talking but equally not wanting to starve. Or find himself homeless. “I should probably go too. I’ve got an early class tomorrow.” Ari agrees. “I had a lot of fun tonight. We should do this again.” She continues, causing Heeseung to agree a little too quickly. “Ok well, go feed your feral teenager. I’ll talk to you later Heeseung.” Ari says, disconnecting the call after Heeseung lets out a small “goodbye”

Playing together soon becomes a natural thing for Heeseung and Ari. It started with her visiting his Animal Crossing island without him knowing - leaving small presents for him to find later. That led to a game of hide and seek on each other’s islands, where they would call and time each other to see how quickly they could find each other’s presents. Now, fast forward a few weeks and the two have just started a minecraft server - which Ari affectionately named “Gamestop Besties”.
Besties. Heeseung hates that word. He’d call Jay and Ni-ki his besties. He’d call Sunghoon and Jake his besties. Heck, he’d even call his mum his bestie if she didn’t smack him for it. But the thought of him and Ari being besties honestly terrifies him. Because part of him thinks that’s all they’ll ever be. Besties.
Tumblr media
“What the fuck?” Heeseung exclaims, his eyes furrowing in confusion as his character walks back to what once was his and Ari’s beautifully built Minecraft house. He says was because half the house is now missing, with a large hole in the wall. “Creeper.” Ari admits. “I forgot they existed.” She continues. “How do you forget about Creepers?” Heeseung laughs. “Well I didn’t have to deal with them until someone killed my cat.” Ari states.
A moment of silence falls between the two before Heeseung sighs. “I’ll get you a new cat.” He says, walking off to try and find a village. “I’ll start rebuilding the house… and make you a new bed.” Ari mumbles the last part, causing Heeseung to gasp. “You blew up my bed?!?”
Tumblr media
It’s been almost a week since Ari and Heeseung last played Minecraft together. Now, for most people that’s not considered a long amount of time. But for people who have been playing together nearly everyday, it’s a big deal. She hasn’t been responding to messages either, which has Heeseung especially worried.
Heeseung gets woken from his sleep by a discord notification. For a second, he considers ignoring it and going back to sleep. That’s until he remembers that he only has notifications on for Ari’s messages.
Heeseung practically jumps out of bed, quickly shoving on the glasses he hates wearing before sitting down at his computer. His eyes take a bit of time to adjust to the bright light before he is able to read the messages:
Aristocat: Hey sorry for not replying. Just had some personal stuff going on ://
Heebeejeebee: u okay?
Aristocat: Uh?? I think?? Idk my boyfriend and I broke up lol
Aristocat: But I’m allgoods now
Heeseung’s eyes widen at the message. She had a boyfriend this whole time? Why didn’t she think to tell him? He can’t help but feel like an idiot for not knowing.
Heebeejeebee: Oh. I didn’t know you had a boyfriend?
Aristocat: Yeah haha I didn’t talk about him
Aristocat: Was gonna wait until we weren’t having problems
Aristocat: But it doesn’t matter now ig
Heebeejeebee: How are you feeling?
Aristocat: Sad lol
Aristocat: I can’t sleep
Aristocat: Can we play minecraft?
Heebeejeebee: Yeah just one sec
Ari fell asleep at her computer not long after loading into their shared world. Partially due to the fact that it was well past midnight. But Heeseung likes to think that it’s because the sound of his voice - spoken in soft whispers as to not wake up Ni-ki, was able to lull her to sleep. The quiet “thank you” she let out before drifting off to dream land certainly made it seem like it.
Tumblr media
Nothing gets one's mind off falling in love with a friend quite like alcohol does. As Heeseung downs his sixth shot of night and asks Ni-ki to grab him yet another beer, his friends start to think that something’s up.
“I’m a pussy.” Heeseung groans, setting his empty shot glass down on the table. “No arguments there.” Sunghoon chimes in, earning him a few glares from their other friends. “What? He’s getting all mopey over something that hasn’t even happened. Sounds like bitchless behaviour to me.” Sunghoon argues, the pink flush to his cheeks showing he’s not far off from Heeseung’s drunkenness.
“Maybe you should have some water hyung.” Jungwon suggests, attempting to get Heeseung out of his chair. “You don’t think I’m bitchless, do you Wonie?” Heeseung asks, grabbing the younger boy’s hand and looking deeply into his eyes. Almost pleading with him. “Uh.. well you are single so… technically?” Jungwon grimaces at the sound of Heeseung’s head banging against the table, a loud whine escaping his lips. He soon goes on a rant about how much of a loser he is, Jungwon rubbing his back sympathetically as he looks to his older friends for help.
None of them knows what to do. Heeseung’s dramatic sometimes, sure. And he’s certainly known to get a bit over the top when he’s drinking, but he’s never been like this. Sure, they know he’s crushing on Gamestop Girl. But this is the first time he’s gotten so worked up over someone. It leaves them thinking that his feelings for Ari are a lot stronger than he’s letting on.
Tumblr media
Fun fact, Heeseung is a sloppy drunk. This is evident in the way that he can barely stand up by himself, needing both Ni-ki and Ari to carry him out of Jay’s apartment. “My car’s just across the street.” Ari says, pointing at one of the few cars parked at this time of night.
When she first got the call from Heeseung that night, she was excited. But as he started to mumble incoherent words through the line, she quickly realised that he was drunk. The phone was soon taken over by his roommate Ni-ki - who quickly explained the situation. So here she is, driving home her drunk friend and his teenage roommate at 2 in the morning.
“Sorry again Noona. Jay was gonna give us a ride but he got tricked into doing shots with Jake.” Ni-ki apologises, causing Ari to wave him off nonchalantly, smiling gently at the younger boy. “It’s fine. I wasn’t doing anything important. Besides, at least this way I know he’s getting home safe.” Ari states, readjusting her grip around Heeseung’s torso to stop him from falling.
Once Heeseung is safely in the backseat, Ni-ki gives directions to their apartment. Ari finds herself looking through the rearview mirror at Heeseung’s sleeping figure throughout the drive. He was still awake and functioning when he called her, so the fact that he managed to drink enough to pass out since then is worrying.
By the time they’ve made it to the apartment, Heeseung has woken up a little. Although his eyes are still closed - he is at least responding to his name now, humming lowly and nodding his head whenever the word falls from someone’s lips.
The two carefully carry Heeseung up the stairs to his apartment, laying him down in his room. Ni-ki leaves to get his hyung some water, leaving Ari sitting at the foot of Heeseung’s bed. She gently wipes away the hair that has stuck to his forehead and tugs his shirt down that had ridden up, revealing some of his stomach.
“Heeseung?” Ari asks, causing the boy to hum at the sound of her voice - a dopey smile adorning his lips. “Ni-ki’s getting you some water. Can you sit up?” She asks, lacing her fingers through his and attempting to pull him into a sitting position. Heeseung allows her to move him around, dropping his head onto her shoulder with a thud.
“Be careful.” Ari softly scolds, bringing her hand to gently rub the part of his head he hit on her shoulder. The two find themselves in comfortable silence as they wait for Ni-ki to return.
“Ari?” Heeseung asks quietly, his words muffled slightly as he presses his face further into her neck. “Did you do this kinda stuff with your boyfriend?” He continues. Her fingers halt their movement at the sudden question, causing Heeseung to whine and press his head further into her hand.
Ari’s not sure what to answer. Does he mean look after him when he’s drunk? Is it the fact that she’s caressing his head? Heeseung sighs at her silence, mumbling a quiet nevermind before completely pulling away to lay down on the bed. Ari watches him for a moment, confusion written all over her features as she processes what just happened. Part of her knows exactly what he meant, after all, Heeseung isn’t the most subtle person in the world. She immediately shoves that thought down though, not emotionally ready to unpack it just yet.
Finally, Ni-ki returns with the water and gives Ari the greenlight to go home. Part of her wants to stay and make sure Heeseung’s okay, but she finds herself walking out of the apartment before she can even think of an excuse not to.
Tumblr media
“Oh my god, I’m so embarrassed.” Heeseung exclaims, resting his head on the table in the kitchen. He can remember everything from the night before, and he’s not sure if it’s a blessing or a curse. Ni-ki pats his friend’s back sympathetically but offers no further help to the situation.
“Do I text her and apologise? Or do I wait for her to bring it up? What if she doesn’t remember and bringing it up only makes things worse? Wait, she was sober so of course she remembers!” Heeseung throws his head back in frustration, letting out a loud groan. “I am never getting out of the friendzone.” He whines, causing Ni-ki to roll his eyes. “You’re hopeless, hyung.” Ni-ki sighs before returning to the game he’s playing on his phone.
Tumblr media
Trying to pretend everything is normal proves to be a difficult task. Heeseung remembers very clearly what he said to Ari the night he got drunk. He knows the implications behind his words and part of him wonders if Ari knows too.
She’s been normal, for the most part. Her voice, just as cheery when the two play games. Her smile, just as bright when they facetime late into the night. Everything seems fine on her end, and Heeseung can’t help but feel that maybe he’s the problem.
Tumblr media
“Are you still awake?” Ari’s voice sounds through his phone speakers, snapping Heeseung out of his thoughts. “Yeah… I didn’t think you were.” Heeseung admits, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He grabs his phone from where it’s resting on his nightstand, holding it so she can see his face more clearly. “Can’t sleep.” Ari admits; a small smile on her lips when Heeseung’s face comes into focus. “I feel restless.” She adds, slightly laughing in disbelief.
You’d think after a day of uni, a five hour shift and multiple hours spent gaming, she’d have run out of energy by now. But here she lays at an unspeakable hour in the morning, not an ounce of tiredness in her body.
“Restless?” Heeseung asks, intrigued. “Yeah… like I need to get out of the house or something.” Ari sighs, running her hands through her hair. A moment of silence passes between them before Ari sighs once more.
“I think I’m gonna go for a drive. Clear my mind.” She says, picking up her phone as she goes on a hunt for her car keys. “Okay.” Heeseung says, his heart falling a bit at the thought of her hanging up.
Another moment of silence…
“Do you want to come?”
Tumblr media
Sat in the passenger seat of Ari’s car, Heeseung feels his heart being pulled in two different directions. On one hand, he gets to spend more time with the woman he’s grown to love. He gets to bask in her presence, her scent sending his heart into a peaceful bliss. On the other hand, she isn’t as warm as normal. Her voice, not as cherry; her smile, not as bright. It’s as if someone has taken all the light from her heart. And thus, breaking Heeseung’s at the same time.
The car is fairly silent, some random radio station playing softly in the background. Neither Heeseung nor Ari make any move to start conversation - finding solace in the comfortable silence.
As the two pull into a nearly abandoned car park, Ari sits back in her chair - running her hands through her hair once more. Something she does when she’s stressed, Heeseung’s noticed.
“Is everything okay?” Heeseung asks, watching her from the passenger seat. He’s been watching her since she picked him up, her movements, mannerisms, the way she gently hums along to the radio when she knows a certain song. All things that would usually bring a smile to Heeseung’s face. But not tonight - not when there’s clearly something wrong.
Ari hums gently in response, turning in her seat to face Heeseung. Her eyes are tired, though still shimmering in a way that would put the entire galaxy to shame. “Have you ever given so much of yourself to someone, only for it to not be enough?” She asks softly. Heeseung can’t help the way he softly bites his lip, nodding gently to her question. “I think I know what you mean.” He says.
It’s one of Heeseung’s greatest fears, not being enough. Giving your everything to someone, to live, think and breathe all for them, only to have it all to be gone in the blink of an eye. It’s the reason Heeseung has never been in a serious relationship - as much as he is obsessed with the idea of falling in love, he’s scared. Because Heeseung falls hard and fast, and he wonders if there’s anyone in the world willing to fall with him.
Ari is everything Heeseung has ever wished for in human form. She feels and expresses her emotions more than anyone he has ever met. It’s what made her so different from everyone else he’s been interested in. Because some childish part of him believes in fate. And god, does this seem like it.
“You spaced out again.” Ari comments, causing Heeseung to sheepishly rub the back of his neck, mumbling a small apology. “I don’t suppose you have a remedy for a broken heart in that interesting head of yours?” Ari asks. She brings her finger up to gently poke between Heeseung’s brows, the furrow he didn’t even know about immediately fading.
“Me”
Heeseung is an idiot. The mix of shock and confusion on Ari’s face confirms that he did, in fact, say that out loud. His expression can’t help but mirror hers as he racks his brain for something… anything to say that can fix this. Is it even worth attempting to play it off? Or should he just man up and confess? He’s basically already started… so might as well give her an explanation.
“Fuck Ari… I just can’t stand to see you like this. Knowing that I could love you more than he ever did. Treat you better than he ever did. It pains me to think that he would just throw you away like you’re nothing, when there are people like me… people who would do anything to just hold you and feel you and love you.”
“You are so bright and warm and radiant and just so pretty. You’re the most beautiful person I’ve ever laid my eyes on. And I know you don’t believe me, which makes you even more beautiful in my eyes.”
“I know, this is the worst time to tell you but I can’t just keep acting like it’s nothing. Like I feel nothing… It’s killing me, Ari.” Heeseung finishes, the hint of desperation in his voice causing Ari’s eyes to soften.
“Heeseung…” Ari lets out, not too sure how to respond. “I’m sorry. I know you’re upset and I just sprung all my feelings onto you, I should never have-”
“Heeseung.” Ari cuts him off, her tone a little sterner at the sound of his rambling. Heeseung bites his lips nervously as he awaits his fatal rejection. “Listen… you’re amazing, Heeseung…”
And there it goes. The infamous line is one he’s heard many times in his life. It starts off as a sweet compliment, almost tricking him into thinking there’s a possibility that just maybe they return his feelings. But all the hope of reciprocation goes out the window as soon as the word but is mumbled. You’re amazing Heeseung but just as a friend. You’re amazing Heeseung but you’re too much for me.
“Heeseung.” Ari repeats for a third time, once again breaking him out of his thoughts. He lets out a hum to let her know he’s listening, his eyes zoning in on a particularly interesting thread on his shirt. “Can you look at me, please?” Ari asks softly, reaching out to gently pull his hand away from the thread - hoping her touch will help to ease his mind in some way.
Heeseung reluctantly brings his eyes up to meet hers, trying to ignore the way his hand practically goes numb from the warmth of her own. Like it’s ascended to heaven from her touch alone. Ari sends him a small smile before continuing what she’s saying:
“Heeseung, I want you to believe me 100% when I say that you are one of the nicest, most considerate guys I’ve ever met. And I am so lucky to have someone like you in my life, who sees me and cares for me the way that you do.”
But… There’s always a but…
“But… it’s just not gonna work. Not right now, at least.”
Heeseung’s eyebrows furrow at her words. Usually rejections are so blatant and obvious, you’d be a fool to go away with any questions. So why is Ari rejecting him in a way that still leaves him with hope?
“You have been nothing but sweet and patient and attentive towards me and my feelings. You deserve to be with someone who will give you the same back, if not more. I’m sorry but… I don’t think I can do that for you right now… and I don’t know how long it’ll be until I can.”
Ari finishes her sentence with a gentle squeeze to Heeseung’s hand. He slowly lets go of the breath he was holding, being sure to squeeze back. “I understand.” He says quietly, a small smile on his face.
If there’s one thing Heeseung doesn’t know how to do, it’s give up. What sounded like a perfectly normal rejection to most people sounded completely different to Heeseung’s head. Because to him, the difference between no and not now is ginormous. And Ari didn’t tell him no.

The drive back to Heeseung’s apartment is equally as silent as the one before. Despite the relationship between the two not changing the way Heeseung would have liked, he can’t help the small smile on his face and the sudden feeling of freedom in his heart.
They mumble soft goodbyes as Heeseung gets out of the car, Ari winding down her window to watch him walk to his door. Before he can think, Heeseung turns back around to face her - causing Ari’s eyebrows to furrow with confusion.
“I’ll wait for you. As long as you’ll let me.” Heeseung says, holding out his pinkie as a promise. They both know what he means, and the thought alone brings a smile to Ari’s face.
Tumblr media
Jay is a good friend. He reads people easily, noticing the small signs of what someone might be thinking. It’s definitely not psychic, but if there’s anyone in the world who’s close - it would be him.
Which is why he’s mentally beating himself up. Heeseung sits across from him at the campus cafeteria, happily eating his sandwich. And for the first time in their years of friendship, Jay can’t tell what he’s thinking.
It’s no secret that Heeseung has been oddly private recently… especially since he’s someone who’s known to share his life events with anyone willing to listen. Ever since the whole thing with Ari fell through (Jay assumes, since Heeseung hasn’t mentioned her in months) Heeseung hasn’t shared the story around his love life with any of the guys.
Speaking of the devil, Heeseung’s eyes light up as he sends a cheerful wave towards someone behind Jay - that someone turning out to be none other than Ari.
She politely bows to Jay before turning to face her friend. “I thought you had a lecture?” She asks. “Yeah but the cafeteria was gonna close and I really wanted a sandwich.” Heeseung says, motioning to the snack he’s currently holding. “You’re such a dork.” Ari giggles, glancing at the clock before her eyes widen. “Oh shit, I’ve got work.” She exclaims, pulling her phone out of her pocket to text someone. “I’ll call you later.” She continues, affectionately squeezing Heeseung’s shoulder before leaving.
Jay’s eyes stay furrowed with confusion, even as Heeseung turns back to face him. “What’s wrong?” Heeseung asks, taking another bite of his sandwich. Jay shakes his head slightly, looking down at his own food. “Nothing I just… I didn’t know you two were still talking.” Jay shrugs.
Now it’s Heeseung’s turn to be confused. He and Ari talk everyday? She even comes around every Thursday night and makes Tacos with him and Ni-ki. Why would Jay think they stopped talking?
The realisation suddenly hits him. Ever since he confessed, he hasn’t felt the need to mention Ari or his feelings towards her to the other guys. Since nothing will be coming from it anytime soon, he figured it’d be best to stop annoying them about it.
“Oh, yeah she rejected me a couple months back.” Heeseung says nonchalantly, causing Jay to look at him in shock. “It’s all good though. She said she wasn’t ready for a relationship and everything stayed basically the same. I just don’t talk about her cause… y’know, not like anything’s happening.” He continues. “Oh, well that’s good to know.” Jay nods, causing Heeseung to smirk at his friend.
“Why… do you miss gossiping about my love life?” He asks, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively. “I’m not Sunoo.” Jay groans, rolling his eyes but smiling at his friend nonetheless. “Don’t worry, you’ll be the first to know if anything changes.” Heeseung says, happily taking a bite of his sandwich.
Tumblr media
Heeseung still isn’t the best when it comes to love. But he’s certainly learning. This time last year, he would’ve had his week of crying and moved onto someone new. It’s honestly refreshing for Jay to see such a change in his friend. And if he knows anything about Heeseung, it’s that he doesn’t change for just anyone. Which means that this Ari girl must be pretty darn special.

Fandom Birthday Rec List for @jrob64
Happy Birthday, dear Joni! Happy Birthday to You!!!
Tumblr media
Okay, when I set out to make this list of my favorites of your works, I had a couple in mind right off the top of my head, and thought "This is a no-brainer! It'll be easy!" You would think I'd have known better after the massive list I created when Krystal asked for our favorite fics overall a couple years ago and I ended up making a Sweet 16 style bracket to even narrow mine down. Needless to say, I ended up with a solid dozen stories on my paper, instead of the five or six I needed, and discovered a few hidden gems from way back before I knew you that I hadn't even read!! However, my very, VERY favorite has never wavered and is still exactly the same - you'll see! ;)
Anyway, I am so glad I found your wonderful writings, have gotten to know you in person, text with you, travel with you, and become genuinely good friends. Your are a blessing in my life, and I hope this gift brings a bit of a smile to your face as I try to celebrate the joy you've shared with us all in creating further adventures for our pirate and princess. Happy Birthday!!!
**Top 6 Favorite @jrob64 Fics (in descending order)**
#6 - "One Thrill Ride Leads to Another" (my own birthday fic! ;p )
Tumblr media
This five part (six, with the epilogue) story is pure fun and chemistry and sweetness overload. I adore it more than I can really say, and am beyond flattered that a handsome sight and chance comment of mine helped to birth the original idea. And no, it isn't even just because this one include an alive and happy Graham as supporting character and a hilariously hot secondary Red Huntsman plot line -- though it certainly doesn't hurt!! ;) My rambling can't really do this one justice, so if anyone reading this has missed it, I beg of you: Check it out for yourself! It's a perfect summer treat!
#5 - "Silly Songs With Killian" (Modern AU one shot - adorable!)
Tumblr media
Okay, I realize that I am using a valuable spot on this list for a fluffy little one shot, but it's just that much fun and has that much heartwarming power. I dare you to get the image of Killian playing VeggieTales on the guitar for a wildly enthusiastic audience of one small boy who is madly excited by the effort out of your head! You won't be able to - it's gonna stick with you and make you smile every time it floats back in!! If you've had a bad day and need a pick me up, this is your fic right here!
#4 - "Taking on Mrs. Jones" (hilariously hot silver fox one shot)
Tumblr media
This is another more comic/lighthearted one shot, but I just can't resist it. In fact, I re-read it in making certain of my list, and I love it all the more. This one features a slightly older, professor Killian (one of my serious weaknesses) and a married version of CS. Plus, when he gets an overly flirtatious new co-worker who makes him uncomfortable - Emma comes perfectly to the defense of her man and teaches that girl a lesson.
#3 - "Ghosted" (a WIP supernatural modern AU MC for @cssns24)
Tumblr media
This story is still in progress, but it has very quickly jumped the list to become one of Joni's best, best offerings (in my humble opinion)! I love the unusual and intriguing plot and can't wait to see how it will turn out. The inclusion of Will and Belle as secondary characters (and a secondary love story) is wonderful👩🏻‍🍳 *chef's kiss!* And a ghostly version of Liam absolutely tugs on my heart. Definitely check this one out if you haven't yet.
#2 - "Always in my Heart" (5 Part Modern AU, so feelsy and angsty and deep)
Tumblr media
This one moved me to tears in the process, way more than once. I loved the long lost friends reunited aspect of this story, right from the start. I loved the sense of adopted family Emma has with David and MM, and most especially Ruth. (I always loved David's mom in canon, and the chance to see a lot more of her in this fic, and to see what this version of her means to Emma was priceless, even if heart wrenching too.)
#1 - "Sowing Seeds of Trust" (and its extra chapter "Marco's Legacy")
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This story was the first one of yours I discovered, Joni, and I was completely captured! It was wrapped around my heart from the very first chapter. I loved the vulnerability and need, but also strength and resilience, in this version of Emma. I loved Killian's support, understanding and love in how he reached out to her. I love the friendships with David, MM, Ruby, and of course MARCO!! (He steals the whole show here, honestly!) The faith and restoration and perfect "happy beginning" after trials in this story are original, unique, and unforgettable. It's always going to be my favorite, I think, as it lead me to your writing to begin with, and it touched me deeply.
*Honorable mentions - if anyone is curious - also not to be missed:
"Snowstorm Confessions"
"Lonely No More"
"Faultline"/"Seismic Waves" (Liam x Elsa)
"Where Her Heart Belongs"/"Her Heart's Home"
"For the Sake of Henry"
Hope you enjoy your little list - and an absolutely wonderful day!!! Very Best Birthday Wishes to You!!!

Hey there! We are a family of 5 (4 youths, one 55 year old) planning a 10-day trip to England and Scotland in month of June 2024.
We are planning to spend 4 days in London, one day trip from London to either Oxford or Wales. 1-2 days in Edinburgh, around 2 days in Inverness. Any other recommendations?
Can you guys help me with some pro tips? Some things we are interested in are
hidden gems/off beat attractions
local activities
best/cheap travel options - car rental for Scotland? Trains are expensive - are they worth it?
What's the best way to reduce too much walking for the 55 yr old family member? Maybe like scooter rental options? - Lime e-scooters?
vegan food options
Recommended stay options - recommended serviced apartment under 250 GBP a night?
Money saving tips - visitor oyster cards, London pass, Explorer pass. I've read britrail pass isn't worth it? What are things I can book in advance apart from accommodation and train tickets?
Best way to spend - contactless forex card
Things to buy
Things not to do
What to carry - a raincoat, water resistant shoes, layers for clothing
Any month specific attraction? - Mayfield Lavender fields
Is there anyway I can catch a play/show that stars celebrities during this time? (no points for guessing I'm interested in anything with Benedict/Martin)
Sherlock related attractions - shooting locations, souvenir shops, found this awesome BBC Sherlock Guidebook
Anything else you recommend?
Thanks a lot!!
Okay, I'm finally getting around to answering things-- (sorry it's taken so long)
Anyways, I'm not completely sure what your budget it, so I'll just go from my experience. As for the trip itself, I hope you guys have so much fun! London is amazing and I wish I could come with you.
Now prepare yourself for an academic essay (not really) of a post with pictures included (below the cut) because I am a nerd.
For the day trip to Oxford or Wales, I loved both places (Wales in a really fun cultural experience), but if you're concerned for time, Oxford is closer (1 hour drive) while Wales is a 4 hour train ride. My group did a tour of Oxford college while we spent a good two or three days in Wales. I was in Oxfordshire at the same time Benedict Cumberbatch was, but he was 23 miles away and I was so sad
Tumblr media
As for Inverness, Inverness Castle is a really cool stop and Loch Ness was so much fun to see. I would definitely bring an umbrella though. My entire group forgot their umbrellas and we got absolutely drenched. Also, if you have a little time on your hands, the Hogwarts Express bridge from Harry Potter is just an hours drive from Inverness and it has a great hiking spot and a fun little gift store. It's at Glenfinnan Viaduct and it was fun to see. There's also a Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross Station (I know there's been a lot of stuff with JK Rowling, but liking Harry Potter and liking JK Rowling are two very different things and it's perfectly fine to like Harry Potter and hate JKR.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of my favorite things to do as a tourist is to... be a tourist (which sounds weird) so I absolutely love to go to all the major attractions. However, I've found some really fun places. Gelato shops, for one, are very nice (and tasty!). Speedy's Cafe from Sherlock is an actual place, as well as 221B Baker Street. Speedy's Cafe is on 187 N Gower St, Euston Rd., London NW1 2NJ, United Kingdom, and it can range from 1-10 pounds a person for food. That same street with Speedy's is the filming location for the outside of 221B Baker Street. The real Baker Street is a little ways away, but there is a Sherlock Holmes museum. With a student ID, tickets are around 8 dollars a person (otherwise, it's 16). The wait time is a bit much, but it's worth it. There's a lot of Sherlock Holmes tours that are really exciting, but if you don't want to go on a guided tour, they filmed in a lot of easily recognizable parts of London such as Trafalgar Square. There's also a lot of tourist sites online that have said locations, and it helps that London is an easily walkable city (and the public transport is a literal godsend compared to Utah). Bletchley Park is also a must-see, but only really for people who are interested in the behind-the-scenes of WWII, in a way, and Alan Turing. And yes, it looks exactly like it did in The Imitation Game. However, tickets are a bit pricey and the hour train ride to Bletchley is also quite pricey.
Arthur Conan Doyle was actually born in Edinbrough so there's some things to do there, if they put the statue back. Edunbrough Castle is a great visit and it is supposedly the inspiration for Hogwarts. There's also a grave with the name Tom Riddle in what is supposedly one of the most haunted cemeteries in the UK if that's interesting for you. Also, in Endinbrough, there are bagpipes everywhere. There is, quite literally, a bagpipe player on every street corner. It's amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I did the study abroad, my group rented two coaches for Scotland (we had 29 people -- 22 students, two directors, and then the five of the directors families) so I don't have a lot of experience with the trains. My advice, however, is to create a spreadsheet somewhere and make a list of what you want to do, how much it would cost, and how much you're willing to spend and go from there. Find train and car rental websites and find one that works with what you plan to do. Also, if those sights have any reviews, look at them. Find what other people are saying about the particular service -- everyone has different opinions, but if one site has more positive reviews from more people, than that could be a good starting place for what you want.
London has really great public transportation, and Oyster Cards are very useful for getting around. Most of the tube stations I went on have both stairs and elevators, and the busses are enjoyable for tourists. Other than that, I'd find some tourist websites that talk about accessibility in London.
Again, I'm not completely sure about stay options as my group had our accommodations provided by the college (but ooooh boy that is a long story--), so I would recommend the spreadsheet and travel websites. AirBnB's are also a good option.
On money saving, Oyster Cards are incredible. I don't know how much they cost, but I used mine at least two times a day, sometimes even four during the entire 3 week stay. Definitely get an oyster card. I'm not completely sure about the other passes, however (SPREADSHEET). Other things to book might be some activities -- London has a lot of fun tourist areas that may be enjoyable. For example, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, etc. Also, in terms of souvenirs -- it's really exciting to get things on site, and sometimes that's the only place you can get stuff, but a good rule of thumb is that you can generally get the same thing for a lot cheaper somewhere else. An example would be that I wanted a SIX sweatshirt when I went and saw it life. Sweatshirts were around $60 dollars while Amazon had them for around $20. You don't have to get everything from Amazon, but if you're worried about it, there are cheaper options elsewhere.
Some advice about European Culture if you didn't know them already: take-out is called take-away, and you usually have to flag the waiter down at restaurants (or simply raise your hand). Also just be polite, and Americans are generally really loud compared to Europeans so, assuming you're American, just be aware of your surroundings. In other parts of Europe, like Greece, pick-pocketing is a big deal, so we had to keep a closer eye on our belonging (I would hold my phone or put it in a front pocket). I'm not sure if this is a big thing in London, but still -- be aware of your belongings. General safety also applies in trusting your gut, using buddy system, and not being out alone at night.
One of the best tips about London is Tesco. If not for the joy of having a row with the local pin machines, than for the 4 pound meal deals -- a main, a side, and a drink. My family lived on these lunch deals. They are pretty good, they have a decent selection, and are in literally every single Tesco you go to. Tesco also has pretty decent prices and, if you're smart about it, you can feel a family of 5 for a week on one trip.
For things to carry: umbrella (in the summer the rain isn't so bad, but it's there), good walking shoes, definitely layer up. London can go from 90 degrees to 50 in an hour, and can go from not a cloud in sight to torrential downpour. My SH tour was caught in the second one -- that was an experience to say the least. Don't forget things like an oyster card and maybe some extra cash if you feel you may need it.
I have no idea about celebrity shows, but West End is literally the Broadway of London (but a whole lot cheaper). My family saw 10 shows on West End during our 3 three week stay. It was amazing, and if you fancy a night out, China Town is literally just around the corner.
Tumblr media
That's pretty much all I have right now! It's pretty long, but I hope it's what your looking for! If you have other questions, feel free to ask. (spreadsheets will be your best friend if you know how to use them)

Hello mutual, what is baroque? I could google it but I'd love to hear about it from you <3
OH I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED
Baroque is an absolute hidden gem of a game. I never hear anyone talk about it, and I think it’s because it got really overlooked; it got only like 50% on GameFAQs ratings, but a whopping 90% of Google users liked it! It was apparently originally released on the Sega Saturn?? And then got remade for PS2 and Wii. It’s apparently also on Switch now???
I found it for Wii for like $5 in a Gamestop, and picked it up with some birthday money, and I AM SO GLAD I DID.
Tumblr media
This is the game’s cover. It’s described as a roguelike RPG, and you play a mute, amnesiac protagonist who explores a post-apocalyptic world. You meet all sorts of characters who slowly become more and more twisted as the game goes on. Some of them are The Horned Girl, who speaks the thoughts of those who get near her; the Bagged One, who speaks the words of others instead of her own; and the Baroquemonger, who can read Idea Sephirah, which if I recall, are kind of like…memories of the past.
At the beginning of the game, Archangel (the guy up there on the cover) tasks you to purify the Absolute God, who destroyed the world. He gives you an Angelic Rifle, and directs you to the Neuro Tower. You go there, in hopes of absolving yourself of a sin that you’ve committed, but can’t remember.
The Neuro Tower is a series of randomly generated dungeon floors, with randomly generated enemies and loot drops, that you have to navigate through to find your way to the Absolute God, and find scraps of the story from other characters. You progress the story in part by dying in the dungeon; when you die in the dungeon, things in the world change slightly, and you unlock new dialogue, and slowly get stronger in order to progress further through the Neuro Tower. It also has a cool system of letting you store weapons and items in Consciousness Orbs that carry over beyond your death.
I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS GAME. It has been YEARS since I played it, but I loved it so much, I’ve picked it up over and over again through the years to start new runs. There’s something about it that just keeps dragging me in. You get to pick up these fragmented bits of story, and try to piece together the picture of what really happened in this world, all while watching the characters you meet at the beginning become more and more distorted over time. It was actively described as “hardcore” when being marketed for PS2 in the USA, because of the nonlinear way the story is given to you. You can find pieces of story before you’ve got its context. It all depends on how you go about playing it, what you discover along the way, how often you die, and what and who you interact with. It’s one of those games I’d suggest looking up as little as possible about, honestly.
If you ever get the chance, definitely give it a try!! I super want to play it again now lkfgkfljg

Word Count: 905 (yeah even i don't believe i could stop myself here)

Tumblr media
A series of grunts echo around the silent temple. Blue eyes follow the dust bellowing upwards from the stone tomb. Bucky huffs, pushing the stone again. A small gap finally created.
Sweat pools on his brow, grabbing the flashlight to peer into the tomb. Empty. Yet again.
“Fuck.” He looks around, there must be something salvageable, something to get him out of the tricky situation. The flashlight gleams over something on the north wall.
Bucky scrambles towards it, laughter found in the relief of spotting the gem. The light tucked between his teeth, carefully he uses his tools to dislodge the opalescent stone.
It tips forward into his palm. Raising it up he observes it, this would do, a fabricated story of the lost jewel of a goddess’ crown or necklace. The money of collectors and snobs would come rolling in, he tosses the stone up and down, weighing it in his palm.
Oh this definitely would work in his favour.
The winning bid makes Bucky and the man waiting for his money very happy. He gets to keep a handsome portion. Lay off the jobs for a while.
He goes to the nearest bar to celebrate, tie loosened and a hefty number of digits in his account.
“Barnes.” Marc Spector greets, clad in a clean cut suit.
“Spector.” Bucky places his glass of whiskey down on the bar table, “Back from the Middle East?”
“Oh I’m in and out you know this, there is someone asking for you however. A job if you will.” Marc looks to the side then back at Bucky.
“I’m not looking for a job.” He lifts the glass to his lips again.
“Yes but this employer is looking for you.” Marc gestures to the private rooms with a nod of his head.
Bucky regards Marc’s dark eyes, he had immense respect for the man. They had worked alongside on projects together. There was a certain level of trust the two shared.
“Alright, I’ll bite.” Drowning the rest of the burning liquid, Bucky licks his lips following Marc to the private rooms.
The mercenary knocks on the door. Bucky tucks his hands into his pockets though his gloves are on he prefers to keep them tucked away.
Marc opens the door, “You’re on your own.” He mutters, the archeologist nods, slipping past the threshold. The door closes behind him.
The dim lights and couches are empty. Bucky’s lips quirk in the slightest. Turning to the left he blocks the hand that encircles the knife.
Twisting and gaining control of it, he moves back. Defending himself against the hits.
Landing a few of his own, the bottle green dress twirls around you as you move around him.
A very deadly goddess. He thinks, he hears your amused laugh.
When his gaze meets your eyes, he stops moving. Every cell in his body froze into place.
“Hmm, I do wish we could have played longer, Mr. Barnes.” You tut, hips sashaying as you walk back to the couch, knife twirling between your fingers before you tuck it into the holster on your thigh.
His eyes are free tracking your movements.
What have you done to him?
Was there a drug in his drink?
How is he still upright?
You sigh, sounding bored.
“I do love the theory you came up with for the stone at tonight’s auction.” You sip a very fruity drink, “Hmm at least the alcohol concoctions have improved over the years.”
Years?
“Now, a goddess’ favourite gem, hidden away in her temple, away from prying hands. But her utmost devout servant stole it from her, because he thought she didn’t love him back.” You list the made up theory verbatim.
Slowly Bucky feels his fingers beginning to move, you smile at him.
“Now, the reason I asked for you is, I want the gemstone. I don’t care how you do it, I don’t care what the costs are, you will return that item to me.” You watch as he swallows, testing his throat control.
“Why do you want a stolen relic?” He rasps, soon he feels ropes wrap around his limbs, tightening and pulling him down to his knees dragging him across the floor. When he feels the texture on his skin he realises its scales.
Widened eyes meet yours yet again, you only smile before standing and cupping his jaw. Your nails softly dig into his cheeks.
You turn his head side to side observing him.
“It would be a shame to curse you.” You coo at him. Your free hand stroking his cheek.
“Is there only one way to curse me?” He challenges, your nails dig in a little more. His eyes darken.
You chuckle, “Your conning skills won’t work on me.”
He breathes deeply, keeping his gaze locked with your own.
“You stole from me, Mr. Barnes. When you entered my temple. Tried and then opened my tomb, then decided, ‘Oh, a pretty stone is the way to go’.” You tilt your head as you watch the thoughts in his mind connect, intertwining the loose ends.
“Medusa.” He whispers, sure of himself.
“The one and only.” You smile, Bucky’s lips part in the slightest as you lean in closer, “So tell me, are you going to bring my little gemstone back, my little artefact thief?”
Bucky licks his bottom lip, then his teeth softly dig into the flesh, “It would be foolish to deny a goddess.”

books i read in sept 2023
Tumblr media
[these are all short + casual reviews - feel free to ask about individual ones if u want my full thoughts or ask for my goodreads!!]
sometimes u travel somewhere where u have a relative lot of downtime + no data and u reinvent urself as a person who reads
she who became the sun (reread) + he who drowned the world - shelley parker-chan ★★★★★ (historical fantasy)
i reread swbts before tackling hwdtw and the way that this duology is so emotionally devastating! big win for readers who are fans of characters tearing the world apart in their grief and then realizing they cannot live in their new world! and the insane gender goodstuff, of course. ough. will think about this for a while
into the riverlands - nghi vo ★★★★★ (fantasy)
excellent third entry to the series that felt more fun than the other two thus far - i love playing around with myths and legendmaking
[reread] raven quest - sharon stewart ★★★★★ (adventure)
really happy to find out that this book from my childhood absolutely holds up. tightly plotted and paced and really poignant. i love animal adventures <3
the last devil to die - richard osman ★★★★★ (mystery)
no more withholding 5*s from genre fiction!! this book made me tear up for real so even though a silly murder mystery is probably never going to change my life, we have to give credit where credit is due. the most character-focused entry of the series so far and it definitely shows!
war of the foxes - ricahrd siken ★★★★☆ (poetry)
individually less interesting but collectively more coherent than crush. it's cool to have a conversation with a bit of poetry standing in a field, and I do love a good metaphor
the paper menagerie - ken liu ★★★★☆ (sci fi short stories)
great collection to go over slowly - i suspect it might have felt a bit tedious reading it front to back in a sitting. i liked how chinese a number of the stories felt. lots of ideas to chew on!
the poisonwood bible - barbara kingsolver ★★★★☆ (historical)
i just know this book went crazy in high school english class! it has themes and motifs and characters to compare and contrast! there's so much rich ground for analysis. and also treating characters like a bizarre personality test (the avenue of entertainment i chose). fantastic book to chew on and i greatly enjoyed talking to people about it
carrie - stephen king ★★★★☆ (horror)
yeah, i get the hype! this is a book that's impossible to read divorced from how deeply it's ingrained in current popular culture, but it stands up beautifully for itself. i'd love to read more analysis of it that puts in the cultural context of the 70s
hotline - dimitri nasrallah ★★★★☆ (historical)
surprisingly kind and hopeful story, definitely lovely if you want something feel-good. i really enjoyed how the occasional french was threaded into the english, it felt very montreal to me
the monstrumologist - rick yancey ★★★★☆ (historical horror)
tremendously gory and often unsettling. i found myself surprisingly attached to the characters and all the historical affectations of the book - it's not a series that i'm itching to continue but it was a good read
hark! a vagrant - kate beaton ★★★★☆ (historical humour graphic novel)
skimmed through parts of this but it was a fun read from cover to cover. always entertaining to see the origins of some very famous internet memes and there are also some hidden gems!
dead silence - s. a. barnes ★★★☆☆ (sci fi horror)
the author writes a very good spooky ship and very mediocre everything else
the word is murder + the sentence is death + a line to kill + the twist of a knife - anthony horowitz (-★★★☆☆+) (mystery)
decent murder mystery series. the author self-insert is goofy, the random homophobia is persistent, but they're quick and easy reads that go down like junk food
all that's left in the world - erik j. brown ★★★☆☆ (post-apocalyptic romance)
genre-mash that just didn't quite work for me. the tonal shifts between "fluffy gay YA romance" and "the world has ended post-apocalyptic bleakness" were jarring and the book never felt like it cohered into anything meaningful

Part 6: Robbing the Robber
Sonic calls Tails’ Miles Electric and hopes he answers. He and Amy are keeping up on foot with the flying figure.
Finally, Tails’ voice is heard on the other end “Hi, Sonic!”
“Hey lil bro, we need some help over here. Bring the Tornado.”
“Got it! I have your coordinates, I’m on my way!”
“Thanks bud!”
A few moments later they see Tails flying overhead. Tails seems to spot the figure they’re chasing and boosts to keep up. He gets alongside, and Knuckles jumps from the planes wing, grabbing the figure and pulling them down with him to the ground. Knuckles makes sure he is the one to hit the ground first, so nobody is hurt too badly. In doing so, he realizes this is the bat he met in the cave.
The two hit the ground. The bat scrambles off of him, and has a double take to get a good look at him. She rests her hand on her hip “well well, we meet again.” Knuckles stands up and dusts himself off “What are you doing? Please hand over the emerald.” Knuckles reaches for the Chaos Emerald, and the bat pulls away “hey, watch it big guy, haven’t you heard? Finders keepers? Losers weepers.”
“Hey, I have a name! I am Knuckles Wachowski the Echidna. The last of the Echidna Tribe.”
“Rouge the Bat. Now that we know each other, you can say the emerald is in trusted hands, right~?”
Knuckles steps closer to her “I do not trust easily. You do not understand how important it is.”
Rouge starts to walk away “oh, but I do.” Her path is blocked by Sonic. She jumps, startled by his sudden appearance. “Hello! That lil gem right there? Yep that’s mine.”
Rouge laughs “is it now?”
“Yep! Inherited it! Absorbed it, me and that lil gem go way back.” Sonic holds out his hand, awaiting the emerald. “Well, you’re a pretty bad owner if it’s just out here! Leaving a powerful gem out in the open.. someone is bound to steal it!” Rouge says.
Suddenly the emerald is snatched from her hand by Amy who throws it up. It’s caught in the air by Tails who has landed the plane nearby, since it can’t go into the trees. He flies away with the emerald cackling like a mischievous little child. Rouge gasps “you little-“ she lifts off into the air and begins chasing the fox. Tails is going juuust fast enough that she can barely keep up.
“Give that back, kid!” Rouge shouts.
“Nope! Finders keepers, losers weepers!” Tails turns around and blows a raspberry at her which just makes her more angry. She almost catches him but he manages to dodge her.
Flying by the cliff edge, someone jumps from the cliff and collides with Tails, then in a flash they have teleported back to the cliff side.
Tails hits the ground harder than he would have liked, but not enough to badly injure him. Above him stands none other than Shadow the Hedgehog. “S-Shadow..?” Tails says shakily, struggling to get off the ground. “I’m sorry kid. But this has to be done. You’re in the way of my goal.”
Tails grimaces “I..I knew we shoulda kept you locked up!” he finally manages to stand up. Shadow is a bit impressed with how durable this little fox is. Rouge finally catches up “serves him right, little scamp!” Shadow looks at Rouge “you found this emerald?” “Sure did, dearie.” “Hm. You’re coming with me.” Shadow places a hand on her shoulder and shouts “CHAOS CONTROL” and teleports with her to some unknown location.
Sonic, Knuckles, and Amy emerge from the tree line, rushing to Tails’ side.
They sit him down on a rock to check him out. His elbows have some small scrapes, and he’s definitely going to be sore in his torso area. “Tails are you ok??” Sonic asks, pulling out his very small first aid kit that he has hidden in his quills for safe keeping. Tails nods. Knuckles cracks his knuckles “who did this to you? Was it that bat?”
Tails shakes his head “no.. Shadow.” Sonic feels his blood run cold.. this is his fault. “Tails, I.. o-oh my god I’m so.. I’m so sorry. It was my fault! I was the one who suggested we release him! If I hadn’t-“ he’s cut off by Amy “Sonic, stop. You can’t predict the future. Don’t blame yourself for the actions of someone else.” Sonic sighs, still feeling very guilty. He opens the bandaid box “fire trucks, or space ships?” He asks Tails who considers his options for a moment. “Space ships, please.” Tails shows his elbows so Sonic can put the bandaids on him.
Knuckles is standing silently in thought. He thought that maybe Shadow could be redeemed. Maybe he could see the light like he did. But he did something unforgivable, Robotnik or not. And that is hurting his family.
Tails in the meantime is silently blaming himself. Twice had he let the bad side get what they want, the compass to the Master Emerald, and now a Chaos Emerald. Feeling heavily discouraged, he leads everyone back to the Tornado and they go home.
. . .
Shadow and Rouge arrive at Robotniks lair. Agent Stone welcomes them and brings them to Robotnik who’s in the middle of a dinner break.
“Ah! Shadow welcome back! Who’s your.. friend?” Robotnik wipes some food from his moustache and approaches the pair. “Rouge the Bat. Pleasure to meet you.” Rouge extends her hand for a handshake that Robotnik awkwardly accepts.
Shadow catches Robotnik up on everything that has happened, from Rouge finding the emerald, to the others showing up, to Rouge chasing Tails, to nearly breaking Tails, and then coming here.
Robotnik thinks Rouge could be useful.. and he’s correct. Rouge is willing to assist. Little does he know, she’s just here for the jewels. Agent Stone is suspicious of her, so he’s keeping an eye on her.
Which is a good thing to do. Rouge is already working with G.U.N.
Shadow in the meantime is helping Robotnik uncover some files. “The ARK is a space colony your grandfather built. It has the ultimate tool to destruction, but we will need 7 chaos emeralds to power it fully.” Shadow says, handing Robotnik some files. Robotnik flips through them “we will have to start looking right away, then. We will destroy the world that has been so unkind to us.” Shadow nods.
Shadow will avenge Maria. Her death will not be in vain.
That very night, Shadow goes into the city to look for any possible leads. Then he hears about this new gem that’s been discovered and being kept in the bank of a city called Station Square. Rouge is able to confirm that the gem is a chaos emerald.
Shadow isn’t great at stealth, so him breaking into the bank did not go unnoticed. He gets what he needs and leaves the scene. Unfortunately for Sonic, Shadow was spotted on the camera, and now there is a warrant out for Sonics arrest. He’s very upset about this.
Sonic decides to go confront Shadow once he figures out where Station Square is. Shadow is beating up a G.U.N. robot when he does find him.
“EXCUSE ME?? UHM. SHADOW?” Sonic is tired and very upset, “YOU WANNA EXPLAIN TO ME WHY THERE IS A WARRANT OUT FOR MY ARREST??“ Sonic rushes to Shadow but immediately gets punched in the face “hmph. Anything to get you off my path. You’re interesting, Sonic.. running right into their trap.” Shadow beams a grin that sends chills down Sonics spine. Sonic is about to speak when he hears “THIS IS STATION SQUARE POLICE DEPARTMENT, PUT YOUR HANDS UP!” he turns around to see armed officers pointing guns at him from every direction, and a helicopter overhead. When Sonic turns to look at Shadow, he feels a pit in his stomach when he sees that there is nobody there. He turns back to the officers, with nowhere to run, and raises his hands in a surrender.
Headlines are made that night about the arrest of Sonic the Hedgehog.
His family doesn’t believe for a second he robbed that bank.
Tom and Maddie are attempting to negotiate with the G.U.N. general, and Tails, Knuckles, and Amy are hatching a plan to break Sonic out of prison island.

New Best Spuds || Jade & Marcus
Setting: The Fryer's Club
Time: Mid-August
Parties: @highoctanegem & @thenavysealkie
Triggers: None
Summary: Jade and Marcus go to a local fry restaurant to settle a debate between soggy and crispy fries. In the process, they get to know each other better.
Jade did not think her silly little fries question (that she totally posted to start discourse cause she was so bored in her apartment) would’ve gotten her to this moment. Waiting to do some kinda taste test with a new friend. Pretty much like one of those old school Youtube videos posted by people who were all facing lawsuits these days. Fun!
(By the way, she would’ve made the best youtuber. If it weren’t for the vampires getting in the way of her dream. She even had the family drama to monetize. And the ukulele. But, whatever. That ship had sailed).
Sitting across Marcus, she smiled politely as the waiter set everything they had ordered on the table. Both crispy and soggy type of fries. The Fryer’s club was definitely a hidden gem. Jade, who was new to town, would've never found out about it if she hadn’t picked up an order from this place a few days ago. It was fate, really. The universe knew she was in need of a fry intervention. “Can I be like, actually honest with you for a second?” she leaned closer, eyes shining mischievously. She grabbed her glass, making a dramatic pause to sip on her Sprite. “I…so, actually. I love…crispy fries” she held her head down, feigning shame. She tapped both hands on the table, letting out an exaggerated sigh. “The jig is up! I’m afraid”.
Marcus was a bit reluctant to meet up with the random woman he had met on the internet. After all, he was just trying to set people straight on which fries were superior, and now here he was at the Fryer’s Club ready to meet up with somebody. Some people just couldn’t believe others until they see for themselves. Not that Marcus could have blamed her, he was just as skeptical about her ridiculous soggy fries superiority.
So now here he was across the table from a girl who seemed to be very energetic. Not that he minded, he could use a little positivity and energy after all. Marcus was very excited to see a big basket of nice, hot, golden crispy fries laid out in front of them, they smelled delicious. Suddenly, Jade leaned in and said she had a confession of some sort to make.
Great thought Marcus. She had been a bit flirtatious in their messages over the internet, but he really was hoping she wouldn’t make an awkward situation in a public place like this. He’s had women hit on him before, of course. Most took the news of him being gay pretty positively, others not so much. Crying women was already a bit much for Marcus to deal with, but a crying woman in public? He’d rather skip town and change his name than have to deal with the inevitable dirty looks people would shoot at him.
Marcus leaned in very attentively, already planning how he’d respond before Jade even began to speak. She… liked crispy fries? The whole time?
“So… you have good taste after all, then? Thank God, I was a little worried there was something wrong with you. Now we’re just two crispy fry loving buddies hanging out.” He let out a nervous laugh and quick sigh of relief. “Thanks for showing me this place by the way! I can already tell this is gonna be good, so let’s dig in.”
Marcus looked nervous right before Jade revealed her truth, and she couldn’t help wondering why that was. “Did you think I was gonna say I killed someone or something?” she grinned, taking two crispy fries and dipping them in ketchup before bringing them to her mouth. “You looked so scared for like, a split second” she continued, giving an innocent shrug. “I can promise you, I can’t even hurt a fly. Like, it’s so icky, you know? No. I can’t, I couldn’t do it, ew” She shuddered at the idea of swatting a fly. And yeah, maybe it was a little funny considering what she did to vampires but like... One of those was technically alive and one wasn’t. So her logic was totally flawless.
Jade grabbed a clean fork, her eyes darting to the other basket, filled with cheesy goodness. “I have excellent taste” resting her head in her hand, she winked at him. “Yup, yes I do love crispy fries. I mean, I’m pretty sure it’s like, the perfect food. But!” she stabbed a group of fries, pointing the fork at him. Some of the cheese sauce dripped down to the table. “Don’t get it twisted, bud. I still would pick these over them” she glanced at the basket of crispy fries. At the end of the day, she got to eat fries, the best food ever (except for tacos, but that was a whole different thing), so she was winning either way.
“Oh, yeah… I’ve gotten lots of orders for this place. So I figured there’s gotta be something about it” Jade waved him off, but she tilted her head, watching him curiously. “Did you not know about it? Oh! Are you a newbie like me? Cause I’m still looking to start a tourist club”.
Marcus watched as his companion stabbed at her fries. He took a few moments to enjoy the fries himself, these were really good. And he grew up only a short drive away from NorCal, so he knew good fries when he tasted them.
He noted her comment about not hurting a fly seemed a bit defensive. It’s true he had probably let his muscles and face tense up a little too much because he didn’t want an awkward situation. He definitely didn’t want to give off the impression he was scared of her. These were just two friends hanging out and bonding over their love of potatoes.
“I’ve just had one too many bad confessions happen out of the blue, I couldn’t tell if you were being serious or not. I didn’t know what I expected but I definitely can’t see you hurting anyone”.
It was true, she was a bright ray of sunshine. Definitely not the type to go assaulting people in the middle of the night.
“I’ve been here a few months. I know a few places, but there’s some hidden gems in this town that I haven’t heard of yet. This place loves to keep secrets.” He took a pause for a second, before adding “I’m guessing you’re a delivery driver then? How long have you been at that for?”
“Oooh,” Jade tucked her hand under her chin, looking at Marcus with interest. If there was one thing she loved, it was gossip. And drama. “What kinda confessions?” she grinned, raising her eyebrows, delighted to hear him out. And like, the chances of actually getting any tea were low, sure, but she had learned that there was no shame in asking. (In her opinion there should be very little shame in anything, really). And sometimes Jade ended up encountering friends just like herself, ready and willing to spill.
“But yeah, it’d be super hard, I think like…” Jade balled her hand into a fist, extending her arm to show the size difference against her companion’s much bigger hand. “Look it, this is barely tickling anyone” she sighed, feigning disappointment. In reality, she didn’t need a strong left hook, or to be well trained in martial arts. It was all about marksmanship for her.
Jade brought another bite of soggy fries to her mouth, humming along to Marcus' explanation. She had met so many people who claimed to be new in town. Almost as if they were spawning out of nowhere. It was a pretty interesting phenomenon. “You’re so smart, drawing conclusions and stuff” she said, pointing one limp fry at him. “Yup! I am a delivery driver, I wasn’t one before I came to town” she reached for the already melting straw of her drink, taking a sip. “Baby’s first real job. My life before was a little more… unconventional” though to her family, there was nothing more traditional than killing the undead. “What about you?”
Now it was Marcus’s turn to mess with his new friend. She was asking him for juicy gossip, after all.
“Oh the usual. ‘I’m on the run for tax evasion’ or ‘I had my license taken away’. My favorite was probably the ol’ ‘I killed a man in cold blood behind an Applebee’s back in 1997.’ That was probably, by far, my weirdest encounter.” He spoke with a completely stony expression on his face, before allowing his face to drop and start laughing, smacking the top of the table as he did so. “Kidding about that last part of course, but the others were surprisingly true!”
He wasn’t surprised to see her hand in comparison to his own. He knew he had big proportions and could throw his weight around very well. She seemed disappointed that she couldn’t hurt anyone, at least not with brute strength. But, to Marcus, the innocence that comes from being harmless was something he envied.
He raised an eyebrow at the mention of “unconventional”. There were a lot of folks in this town who he would certainly place under the category of unconventional. The more he met and spoke with people, the more he learned that just about everyone here had some kind of story to tell and lead lives that were much more than met the eye.
“I keep watch at the lighthouse on Hanging Rock, doing maintenance work when necessary. If there’s any kind of shipwreck, I call the incident into the Coast Guard so they can launch a rescue. Thankfully, I haven’t needed to do that. I also kind of play the role of lifeguard, unofficially, as I have had to jump in and save a few drowning swimmers every now and then. Aside from that, I did a little stint in the military. Navy veteran.” Legally dead, he finished in his head. Not exactly an honorable discharge.
“What brought you out here?”
She quickly caught onto the joke, her eyes growing wide and shiny. “Not the Applebees!” Jade loved people with a sense of humor so, so much. In her opinion, it was way more attractive than any good looks available. A chiseled jaw sagged and perfect skin wrinkled with time anyway, so. She gasped dramatically, her portion of fries hanging mid air. “Right in front of the chicken penne? That’s just bad form”. She shook her head at the absurdity, but began to understand why he had been so spooked before. Though, if she were to tell him real things about herself, she might have a story or two (or like, a dozen) that might surpass a stranger’s tax evasion. She didn’t want to scare him, though. He seemed…super cool, going along for the fries journey and all. “For real, though… I have no crime stories for you” her lips twisted into a frown as she lied. “Except for like, speeding. But is it against the law if you don’t get caught?” She pointed another fry at him and winked.
“Oooh, a lighthouse? That’s so cool” Jade wanted to ask if the place was haunted, cause… weren’t lighthouses always haunted? And surely he had like, so many spooky stories to tell. But another thought got in the way, as it was usually the case. A way more important one anyway. “Lighthouses always remind me of Pokemon for some reason. You know the one?” She had come to learn that many Wicked’s rest residents were averse to all things pop culture, so she could never be sure if she was gonna have to explain what Pokemon was to him. (Not that it would be a problem to explain Pokemon. Or talk. It was just, the principle). “And please, tell me you get to wear a skimpy red bathing suit” she tacked on with a playful eyebrow wiggle. “Oh wow, you’ve been around, huh?” Jade shifted on her seat, growing slightly uncomfortable at the mention of the military. But hey, the uniforms were hot anyway, right?
She reached for her drink when Marcus asked for for the reason she was in town. The question was always a little annoying (or a lot). She wanted to tell people. How else was she gonna get allies on her side if she couldn’t explain what she was after? But a voice that suspiciously sounded like her sister kept chiming in, pointing out discretion and pragmatism and…it was all way too boring for Jade’s liking and how she wanted to approach her tiny problem. (But for some reason, she still seemed to value Ruby’s opinion over her own) (Not cause she doubted herself or anything) (Cause… no way. Nope). “You know how I didn’t wanna scare you? Welp! All a lie. I’m actually a hitman. Out here, looking for a VIP target” she sighed, speaking in half truths at least made her chest feel less tight. She took a gulp of her drink, clicking her tongue in frustration. “Just some errands I have to run, really” she rolled her eyes. “Family business, super boring, don’t wanna bother you with it” she waved him off, stealing some crispy fries from the basket. And, oh right… She still had questions about the lighthouse. Maybe it could help gauge his knowledge of the supernatural. And then, maybe she could come clean. “So… Do you get ghosts in your lighthouse?”
Marcus was very glad to see that his joke had landed, and returned an appreciative laugh when she brought up the chicken penne. Sometimes the food there alone was enough to kill a man, and he found himself grateful that his new friend found a more reputable place to eat.
“Pokemon?” Marcus asked inquisitively. When he was a kid he joined in on the craze, watching the TV show on 4Kids whenever it would come on and bringing his gameboy to school so he could play at recess. But he grew out of it quickly and hadn’t played the games since he was in grade school. But he had to admit, he had some great memories associated with that time of his life. “Haven’t played those games since I was…probably 10. But isn’t there a lighthouse in the TV show? I remember Ash and the gang having to go to Bill’s lighthouse for something. Maybe that’s what you’re thinking of?”
He had to chuckle a bit at the bathing suit comment. While he was never into speedos, he had no doubt that he would look damn good in one.
“I hate to disappoint you, but red speedos aren’t exactly my swimsuit of choice. But yeah, I’ve definitely been around! I wish I could have traveled to those places under better circumstances, but I guess beggars can’t be choosers.” He thought back to his tours and decided most of them were pleasant, or as pleasant as being a cog in a massive war machine could be.
“Ghosts? Funny you mention that, I did have one at the lighthouse. But I called in an expert and mercifully laid his spirit to rest”. He decided to leave out the bit about fighting the water zombie, he didn’t know just how open to the supernatural this woman was.
“Ah, I see. A hitman, or hitwoman I should say. Who’s your target? Some Russian spy? Maybe somebody’s former lover? The president? Nah, I’m not sure why the president would be here of all places. The mayor? Does this town even have a mayor?” He thought momentarily, because he actually wasn’t sure if he had ever seen or heard of this town’s mayor before. “I get it, you could tell me, but you’d have to kill me. If that were the case, I’d have to wish you the best of luck with that,” he finished with a smirk”.
“Pokemon!” Jade confirmed eyes wrinkling happily. Someone knew like, regular things in this town. The classics. Maybe the fact that Marcus wasn’t from around played a good part in that. “I don’t remember if I ever played the games…my siblings didn’t let me—Oh, WAIT! Pokemon Stadium! You played that one?” She almost banged the table from her excitement. That would’ve been such a poor choice actually, cause the baskets were a little flimsy and no fry deserved to be spilled. She shoved another handful into her mouth, wiping her hands on the napkin before continuing. “I don’t remember exactly the situation with the lighthouse. It was one of those…Dragonite episodes, I think. Early stuff. I was so young it’s all fuzzy” she pointed her limp fry at him. “Point being, lighthouses are totally cool”.
Jade let out a big dramatic huff, rolling her eyes and twisting her lips into a sad grimace. “You’re right, I am super disappointed. I’m sure you’d be a hit with the ladies” or the guys too, that was super cool with her, obviously. “Mmm, I’m glad you’re here and not there though,” and Jade found herself feeling pretty earnest in that regard. “Would you be having the greatest fries in the world, with the best company you can think of over there? No freaking way, bud”.
She gasped at the mention of a ghost in his turf. Alright so, even if she’d dealt with the undead for most of her life, ghosts were still like… a cool cousin she didn’t get to visit a lot, but she totally loved. She would be so thrilled to run into more of them. Not the evil kind, though. (Maybe more like, Devon Sawa in Casper type. Or Denny Duquette, but without all the plot contrivances). Where was she? Oh. Marcus had a ghost in his lighthouse. “Ooooh, that sounds brave. I’ve dabbled in some ghost hunting myself, but like totally amateur” she liked that he was upfront about it too, it made for an easier segue into spookier topics. “This place is probably a hotspot, huh?”
Jade found all of Marcus' playful guesses incredibly entertaining. “Ugh, see…All of that sounds way more fun than the real thing”. She wasn’t the person to ask about how the town was run, she like…didn’t even know where her apartment was most of the time. “Just some old dude, all influential and stuff, you know” She blew raspberries, reaching for her soda. “You get it, babe. And I’ve grown fond of you, I’m afraid…I would not want to kill you”. She nodded, hanging her head in mock shame. She knew, obviously… by the lack of spidey senses tingling, that Marcus wasn’t undead, but even the thought of having to harm one of the few people who had been nice to her since she came to town was like, super depressing.
He had to admit, Marcus enjoyed the energy that his new friend was putting out. Plus, who else here would know about Pokemon? It wasn’t something he had played or watched since he was young, but it still brought him a sense of nostalgia which he enjoyed being able to share with somebody else. He reached for another of handful of fries.
“Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2! And Pokemon Snap, now that was my jam!” He nodded approvingly. He had to admit, this girl had great taste. A woman of culture, as it were.
“As a matter of fact, I was quite a hit with the ladies. Well everyone really…not to brag or anything.” It wasn’t something he could really talk about while still coming off as modest. But to be fair, he also loved bragging about it.
“What kind of ghost hunting have you done? I only did that the one time because he wouldn’t stop sliding stuff around and making noises, it was very distracting! But I’ve been interested in doing other haunts, so I’d love to hear some of your stories! Definitely a hotspot over here though. If it’s creepy and wants to kill you, it probably lives here.”
Marcus raised an eyebrow with mock suspicion. “Ahh, the influential old men make the best targets! They may seem boring, but man do they have a lot of sway over other people’s lives sometimes.” That was a truth he had lived through many times in his naval career. Good young men being sent off to kill other good young men so a few old men can line their pockets. One fewer of them wouldn’t really be such a bad thing, assuming he deserved it.
“Well it’s good you don’t want to kill me. You’d be in a lot of trouble if you did” he said, giving his right bicep a flex to emphasize his physical advantage over her. “I’m glad we get to just be friends then. I’ve had a lovely time so far, this is probably the most fun I’ve had eating fries before. And that’s saying something!”
“There’s a second one? I don’t know if I remember that one very well” Jade squinted, her fries hanging mid air. A second Pokemon Stadium sounded so fake. She reached for her phone inside her bag, quickly typing away the question for the search engine to answer. In the meantime she absently sipped on her drink. “I remember playing one with cards too… And by that I mean, I’d steal Jasper’s game boy at night and try not to leave any trace. OH! Pokemon Stadium 2 does exist,” she grinned, without looking up from the screen. Maybe she’d text her siblings about it, confirm they infact didn’t not get that one growing up. Her curiosity satisfied, locked her phone and put it aside. She had a date to be engaged in, after all.
“Nope. Nuh uh, you should brag. I support it, I demand it in fact. You gotta be confident in what you have. AND! In what you don’t have, even. That’s the trick” Jade winked at him, deciding she liked him enough to share that little secret with him. (So what if her confidence had some ‘fake it till you make it’ aspects? It got the job done in the end didn’t it?) “I only hang out with cool people, so… gotta keep up, babe” she quipped, with a playful shrug. (And sure, okay…she found almost everyone cool, in their own right) (It didn’t make her statement a lie).
“Okay so, me personally? Zero. But like, stay with me… I didn’t lie. Sometimes… my siblings would let me tag along in their… little adventures. So I totally got to see them banish a few. Give me a bag of salt, I'm ready to jump into action, I say!” She nodded so confidently, the table shook with the full body movement. Jade’s gaze narrowed for a moment, mulling over Marcus word’s. If it’s creepy and wants to kill you, it probably leaves here. Funny. If it was such a charged town, then it could shed some light as to why the elder vampire she accidentally released decided to visit. Maybe it wasn’t after someone. But something.
Jade quirked an eyebrow, playing with her food as Marcus made a pretty astute comparison between old, rich men and elder vampires' ability to compel others. Maybe he knew about other stuff besides ghosts. Or maybe, (you know, the most obvious answer) he might have been referring to his time serving. But she was totally curious either way. “Yup, yup… Exactly. You get it, babe”. Her laugh echoed around the whole restaurant while he flexed his giant bicep at her, paying no attention to the looks she got. (They weren’t the kind of looks she was interested in, anyway). She covered her mouth, though her eyes were filled with joy. “Alright babe, this is a family establishment, no need to put on a show. You’re gonna get everyone hot and bothered”. She bit her tongue, reaching for her almost empty glass of Sprite. “A toast then?” she wiggled her eyebrow, demanding him to mimic her action. “To me sparing your life, obvi. And… hm. To trying every single fry there is to try in this awful little town! How about that? Anything else you wanna add? The beautiful company…perhaps?”
Marcus had to admit he was a little offended his new friend didn’t believe him to the point that she had to fact check him. While he may not have played since he was a kid, Marcus knew his Pokemon games. At least up until about Gen 3, then he stopped paying attention. “Of course there’s a Stadium 2. I used to play that game for hours with my cousin growing up”.
“Well it’s as they say” he began with a smirk, “if you’ve got it, flaunt it. As long as you don’t break any obscenity laws, of course”. Marcus was proud of the figure he’d been able to maintain, even with the loss of his pelt sapping his strength away for a few months.
“Banish? Are they exorcists or something? Usually the paranormal investigators I see hear a floorboard creak and start screaming and running out of the house. But the fact that you actually know a thing or two is impressive!” Even he didn’t know exorcism or banishment was even possible, let alone witnessing a spirit be banished firsthand. This girl got more and more interesting as the night went on.
He didn’t really put much thought into his little gun show, just wanted to make a fun little point about their physical differences. However, he now caught the stares of a few of the restaurant patrons and realized he was coming off as one of those douchey gym rats who like showing off wherever they go. He sheepishly rolled his sleeve back down and turned his attention back to Jade. “Maybe I’m flaunting a bit too much, eh?”
“Agreed. To a beautiful friendship, and to many more fry adventures in our future. And of course, your infinite mercy in not killing me, that’s always a great reason to celebrate”. He took his diet coke and clanked his glass against hers. “We should definitely do something like this again soon”.

Pt. 1 ~ Hidden Away | Pt. 2 ~ What is it, Karamatsu? | Pt. 3 ~ Bop it, Drop it, 💍Pop it💍!
Tumblr media
Karamatsu’s finally returned home! The silence of the household lulled him into a false sense of security, but the hidden presence of his brothers yanked him out of it. And boy oh boy, do they have questions.
SHIP: (Discussed) 🕶💥Dramatics💥🕶 (Karamatsu x Freedom)
WARNINGS: Swearing
AUTHOR’S NOTES: This is Pt. 2 of a Three-Part saga, so make sure to read Pt. 1 & stay tuned for the final installment.
How convenient was it that today had such pleasant weather? Sure, the December cold was most definitely present, but that seemed to work in Karamatsu's favor! The chill on his skin energized him for the upcoming day, as if his little shopping spree hadn't fueled him enough. He had left his home just a couple of hours ago, barely having said a word to his brothers. Part of him hoped that he hadn't worried them, but another part of him knew that his sudden disappearances never exactly worried them. And besides, he had bigger things to worry about! For once, he was a man that had plans, and he had to focus on those plans. In one hand he carried a package of peppermint bark, in the other a fresh rose bouquet. Merely holding these items made him overwhelmingly happy, maybe even nervous! He had a pep in his step the entire way home, even humming himself a tune in an attempt to spend some energy.
He slid the front doors open.
"Brothers~! I'm home!", he called out.
He waited for a response, surprised by how quiet it was. Maybe his brothers weren't home? He shrugged it off, deciding to head into the kitchen to drop his items off. He could put the chocolate in one of the cabinets so they didn’t get stolen immediately... and he could put the flowers in a vase until it was time to head out! Yes... everything was falling into place for him. Now he could just relax. Seeing as how none of the other brothers were to be found, Karamatsu figured he could watch whatever he pleased on the TV, for once. So he slid one of the kitchen doors open, cutting straight into the living room.
"THERE HE IS!".
Karamatsu jumped back; all of his brothers were gathered around the living room table, with Todomatsu pointing at him and standing.
"Oh! Well- well hello, my brothers!", spat out Karamatsu.
"Don't try to act innocent with us," grumbled Ichimatsu. "We know your secret".
"Honestly! This is the most Exclusivematsu thing you've ever done, Exclusivematsu!", exclaimed Todomatsu.
Karamatsu looked at them with a puzzled expression, sweat beads dripping down the side of his head. "Huh-? Whatever do you mean? I... I would never hide anything from my family, let alone my dear brothers-", he said as his voice shook.
The gathered brothers stared at Choromatsu, who rose from the table. He walked over to Karamatsu, like a prosecutor approaching a witness.
"Look Karamatsu, we already figured it out... or at least, we're pretty sure we did".
Choromatsu held out his fist, and slowly opened it to Karamatsu. In his hand was a shining ring, complete with gems in his signature blue.
"I found this hidden in one of the nesting dolls on the bookshelf," Choromatsu said as he stared at the ring. He moved his gaze to Karamatsu, practically piercing his soul; "You're planning to propose to Freedom, aren't you?".
Blush immediately coated Karamatsu's face, his gestures becoming much more frantic; "Ah-?! Pro-PROPOSE?! Haha! I wish! No... that's just... a ring for me! I thought I'd give myself a more.... sensitive touch~".
Ichimatsu turned to Jyushimatsu; "Jyushi. Octoupus hold".
Jyushimatsu saluted and prepared to pounce on his older brother. Alas, Karamatsu's barely-hanging-by-a-thread lie completely tore at its seam.
"WAITWAITWAITWAIT!! OKAY! Okay! I'll tell you", yelled Karamatsu, waving his arms.
Choromatsu blocked Jyushimatsu's path with his arm, signaling for him to cancel his plan. Jyushimatsu sat back down, and all eyes were set on Karamatsu. In an instant, his body language became much softer.
"Yes... I'm planning on proposing to her... tonight, actually," he said as he avoided eye contact. "That's why I left earlier; I wanted to buy a couple more things for her before I left".
The rest of the brothers gasped at the reveal.
"Oh Karamatsu... why didn't you just tell us?", asked Choromatsu with a sincere tone.
"You're joking right? You remember how we reacted when he first said he was dating Freedom?", said Osomatsu.
Most of the brothers laughed as they remembered those fond times, but Choromatsu jerked his head towards them and told them to be quiet.
"No... well.. I wanted it to be a surprise. I thought it'd be a nice surprise for you guys... and I also didn't want you telling her... and I also didn't want to be put into a headlock".
Karamatsu's brothers all nodded, muttering various phrases of agreement.
"Okay, wait a minute-", chimed in Todomatsu, "How do you plan on proposing to her, Karamatsu?". He sounded oddly serious in this moment.
"Oh man, good question! What if it's something really painful?!  Like proposing to her right in front of the movie screen at the movie theater? Or like, using fireworks that look like his face?!"; Osomatsu had lost all seriousness in this situation, and was just laughing his ass off at this point.
Karamatsu sighed, his eyes glued to the floor; "I was just gonna take her out to dinner... I even managed to get us reservations". His mood seemed to lighten up. He put his hand to his chin, having a confident smile as he continued his thought; "I was thinking of having the question written on our dessert, and then I could pop on my knee and tell her how I've truly felt all these years! Or maybe I could tap on my wine glass and announce it to the entire restaurant...".
Karamatsu began beaming, practically acting out how he imagined the scenario to go, "Yes... I'll tell them all how much I love her! The entire world will know that I'll marry my Karamatsu Girl! I'll-".
"NO, nononononono-!", interrupted Todomatsu, rushing to Karamatsu and trying to snap him out of his daydream.
"Huh? I didn't think it was that bad," said Choromatsu. "Those might've been some of the best ideas he's had in a while".
Todomatsu glared at Choromatsu; "You didn't think it was bad because you don't know Freedom like I do".
He turned his attention back to Karamatsu, who was incredibly bamboozled by his ideas' rejections; "Unlike you Karamatsu, Freedom doesn't like the idea of everyone watching her all the time. Having all those eyes on her while you ask the most important question of her life is NOT going to make her feel good!".
Karamatsu threw himself into a flashback montage. Freedom did always seem on-edge whenever attention was drawn to her. Hell, even when attention was drawn to the brothers, she'd get awkward purely due to association. Karamatsu's expression went blank at this realization, his eyes becoming pure white with fear.
"I- you're... you're right-".
"I know".
"So... I can't propose to her there...".
Karamatsu, needless to say, began to freak out; "Well wHAT DO I DO- I already asked her out to dinner tonight!!! Do I just cancel?! I can't just cancel on her, right?!".
His fellow brothers shouted in sync; "DON'T CANCEL!!".
"Come on Karamatsu, the dinner date's the only good idea you've ever had", light-heartedly pleading Osomatsu.
"Yeah, you don't have to cancel everything!", added Choromatsu. "Just propose somewhere else!".
"Hmm... but where else could I do it? If it has to be somewhere both romantic and not crowded...", mumbled Karamatsu.
"Well, have you gone on any dates to places like that?", asked Choromatsu.
Karamatsu threw himself deep into thought. Most of their dates have just been walks throughout the city, window-shopping or simply going out to explore. They've had beach-dates before... but restaurant wear wouldn't be suitable beach wear... and it was probably too cold out anyway. They could go to the park; if it snowed that would've made it extra cute, but the park's not exactly special. No... nowhere he could think of felt right... nowhere except for one...
"The bridge... I could take her to the bridge", he uttered, as his face softly lit up.
His brothers look at him, all with confused faces as their faith in his plan quickly began to dwindle. A syncronized "huh?" escaped all their lips.
"Eh?! Don't look so surprised! It has a beautiful view, it's ROMANTIC, it's NOT BUSY!... and we've had a lot of good times there...".
Choromatsu shook his head, facepalming with one hand and shrugging with the other; "Yeah, sure, that works".
"Hmm... I don't know... isn't that kinda lame?", asked Todomatsu, almost with a genuinely-concerned tone.
"Well, you did tell him not to do it anywhere crowded. That takes away a lot of his options, you know," defended Choromatsu.
"Heh~ As if anything we could do together would be lame~", said Karamatsu as he pulled out his sunglasses. "Nothing can be boring if you're doing it for the great adventure of love~!".
His brothers groaned, cringed, some even had to stand up and pace a little bit. At least Karamatsu's confidence was back, right? Maybe that wasn't an entirely accurate statement though; he seemed to still be holding onto his breath, and slight sweatbeads still dripped down the side of his face. But at least he had a plan. That's all that mattered, right? All that mattered was that he was prepared.
Or so he originally believed. As Karamatsu thought more about the night ahead, he remembered the key function of the universe: time.
"AH-! And I have to get ready for that adventure!!", shouted Karamatsu as he began rushing for the door.
"Huh? What time are you supposed to meet her at?", asked Choromatsu.
"5 o'clock, tonight!", Karamatsu worriedly responded.
Todomatsu glanced at his phone as he heard the commotion; "Karamatsu, it's only 12 o'clock".
"And that's BARELY enough time to get ready! I've got to plan my outfit for tonight! I've have to make sure I've got all of my gifts for her! I've gotta brush my hair, and floss, and figure out which cologne's gonna fit the best for tonight!"; Karamatsu kept rambling to himself. He glanced at Choromatsu's hand, seeing he still was holding his ring. "AND I have to practice proposing!".
He swiftly snatched his ring from Choromatsu's hands and rushed to the living room door, just barely dodging Osomatsu’s grasp on his shoulder. Osomatsu stood there, retracting his hand as he sighed. The remaining brothers followed suit with their own sighs.
"I... I can't believe we're not stopping him...", muttered Ichimatsu.
The 5 brothers all stared at the floor. It was pretty strange for them not to. Every other time a brother's made romantic progress, they've tormented said brother about it. Hell, they tormented Karamatsu about it when he first started dating Freedom. The atmosphere just felt... different though. Half of them planned on doing it again; they waited for a perfect time to tackle Karamatsu, but the time just never came.
"Well... Freedom’s our friend... I'd hate to admit it, but messing with Karmatsu's messing with her, too", said Todomatsu.
"I guess the news is easier to handle when he's hooking up with someone none of us are interested in, right?", joked Osomatsu.
The brothers sat back in silence.
"Maybe we'll just torment him at his wedding, haha!", suggested Osomatsu.
The brothers’ eyes widened at the devious idea.
"EH?! That's going WAY too far Osomatsu!", scolded Choromatsu. "Weddings are civil. They're a time for love, they're-".
"Awe come on! I think Freedom would find it funny!", defended Osomatsu.
"You're talking about attacking her fiance, Osomatsu", Choromatsu said with a blank face.
"That's assuming she says yes, though", pointed out Ichimatsu.
The brothers turned their gaze to him, instantly making him feel on edge… but he wasn't exactly wrong. Technically they didn't know whether she'd say yes or not, but none of them even considered that until he brought it up.
"...What if... what if him getting a girlfriend was just a fluke?", continued Ichimatsu. "You know that every time we've tried to pursue any sort of romance, its ended up failing miserably".
Choromatsu looked at his younger brother with a concerned look; "Ich... Ichimatsu..."
But his younger brother went even further; "Karamatsu getting hooked up at all must've been a huge exercise of good karma... but once something good happens, something bad of equal value will happen. Or, in our case, it'll probably be something worse".
Though most of the brothers seemed unnerved by this theory, Todomatsu simply shrugged it off; "I don't know, Freedom's kinda obsessed with him... okay, she's really obsessed with him".
He looked at his brothers, seeing their facial expressions not change a single bit; "Huh? Why aren't any of you agreeing with me?".
"Well... Freedom might be in love with him.... but that doesn't mean she's ready to marry yet", said Choromatsu, hesistation being heavy in his voice.
"Ugh, I can't imagine how Karamatsu wold take that...", said Osomatsu.
The room went silent again. They couldn't argue Ichimatsu's logic. They had countless times when they thought they'd finally get a stable relationship, only for it to fall at the seams. Jyushimatsu's girlfriend had to leave, they fell for that Rental Girlfriends scam, Nyaa-Chan actually changed her mind towards Osomatsu, not to mention all the times when it'd seem like Todomatsu would get a date, only for him to fail. Hell, Karamatsu had plenty of these stumbles. All of them had the displeasure of meeting his flower fairy, and there was that one chick that just used him for a free meal.
But current times just felt different to the past; most of them had fulfilling relationships now, after all! The universe had certainly been kinder to them than it had been for the past few years. And yet, Ichimatsu still wasn't technically wrong. Especially for Karamatsu, AKA: The brother the universe seemed to spite the most, there was always a chance for things to go wrong. There was a chance it could fail. A chance everything could revert back for him, back to the way status-quo originally intended.
The silence in the room was deafening; their own heartbeat was pounding in their ears. They cared about the outcome of this proposal more than any of them would like to admit, even to themselves.
"But we have to be there for them anyway, right?"; finally somebody spoke, and it was nobody else than Jyushimatsu.
The brothers snapped out of their reflective thoughts, an uncharacteristically soft expression worn by all of them. They nodded and stood.
"We do... we really do", said Choromatsu.
"Well let's do it then!", shouted Jyushimatsu as he hopped to his feet. "Knock this game outta the park! HOOOOOMMMMMME RUN!".
The brothers smiled and shook their heads at Jyushi's antics. Even if it was drowned in baseball lingo, the sentiment was understood clearly. Frankly, none of them felt like playing wingman. Some of them didn't feel the need to anyways. At the very least though, they could make sure everything goes well, the only one they knew how...
But it was much too early for that; the date was still 5 hours away. So while Karamatsu practiced his proposal poses in the higher level of the house, the rest of the brothers could simply relax.
Time is a never-ending enigma though, and before Karamatsu knew it, the clock had struck 5.
and a sudden knock could be heard.

Now You See Her
by Lisa Leighton and Laura Stropki / 5 stars
I'm so glad I found this book. It was featured as one of the "mental health awareness month" picks from the library, so that was enough to grab my eye. The book itself reminded me of the Airhead series, by Meg Cabot, which was something I'd enjoyed in the past. That was enough to get me to open the book, and then it was simple from there.
It starts with a tennis match. Amelia's mother announced that they were moving, again, and Amelia hopes that by challenging (and winning) the spot for first singles on their high school tennis team will be enough to convince her mother that they need to stay. She loses though and can't help the anger and helpless frustration that consume her afterwards. Which is why she later finds herself caught in a downpour, struggling to see through the sheeting rain to make her way back home. She misses her turn, and of course her car chooses that moment to break down.
When a man grabs her, she does everything she can to get away. She manages to break free of his grasp, and sees headlights coming. Amelia wakes up in the hospital, expecting to be questioned about the man who grabbed her. She needs to warn her sister, Mae, since the man mentioned both girls by name as he sought to take her. Instead, she's surrounded by worried parents she doesn't know, and doctors who keep sedating her, saying confusion is normal with head traumas.
Nothing is normal about the fact that she's no longer herself. Instead, she's Sophie, the girl Amelia had challenged in tennis. The perfect girl, with her picture perfect boyfriend and family. Amelia soon realizes the only way that she can get them to let her leave, and to stop watching her like a hawk, is to pretend that she is Sophie.
However, as people re-enter Sophie's life, Sophies memories flood in. With them, a little piece of Amelia disappears. How can Amelia return to herself, and is Sophie trapped as her, while Amelia's body struggles to live in the ICU? What happens when too much of Amelia's memories slip away - will she cease to exist? The best solution Amelia can find is to write down everything she knows, whether it's her own birthday and memories of her life, or revelations about Sophie.
This book was such a joy. I'm so excited that I found it, and I've already had my mom order it for her high school library. Of course telling her that she needs to read it too, immediately. I was swept into the mystery, and it was so interesting to see how Sophie's life changed with Amelia at the wheel. And how much Amelia learned about herself, even as she was desperately trying to hang on and figure out what happened that night. Even if nobody else saw it, there really had been a man who'd tried to take her, and nobody was looking for him.
Definitely a hidden gem, I'm so happy that the librarians thought to feature it. I can't wait to have more people read it, and see new reviews to hear what they thought about it!
