*takes a deep breath* AHHHHHDKAJFKSJA
I JUST WATCHED BOY AND THE HERON AND I LOVE IT SM AND IT'S SO GOOD.
Tumblr media
So obvs, it's studio ghibli, it's gna be some of the prettiest stuff you've ever seen. So many scenery frames made me think "I'm gna scour the internet for them and repaint them as art practice. It resembles smudgy oil paintings rather than studio ghibli's gouache style (see spirited away, Totoro) but it's honestly beautiful nonetheless, and seeing it on the big screen made me feel like I was in the movie. There's even a stone passage that looks like the one from Coraline. The animation works so smoothly to make the film an overall wonderful immersive experience.
The character design was so good. You have your classic ghibli, countryside, apron wearing girl. Your boy with spiky hair. And probably the best addition of a butch seafarer, Kiriko, dubbed by Florence Pugh (oh my goodness I am too gay for this). The grannies were so inexplicably lovely and visually distinct I just want a hug from them. The wizard (Mark Hamill having this otherworldly yet grounded design and amazing hair. The heron was oddly grotesque without being scary (this is such a gift only japanese have.) and his various designs fluctuate along with the story. I was surprisingly intrigued by the fact that even in crane form, he had human teeth. And ofc THE WARAWARA.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
GOSH THEY ARE ADORABLE I LOVE THESE DAMN TAPIOCA PEARL LOOKING THINGS THEY HAD ME SQUEALING IN THE THEATRE EITH HOW CUTE THEY ARE.
The score is beautiful and I dare say that it's on par, maybe even better than the Spiderverse score (and that's REALLY HIGH praise coming from me, I love the Spiderverse score to the point where it's on my Spotify wrapped.) I loved how the use of motifs, especially in relation to magic in the film. And definitely need to go give it more listens. 11/10 would recommend listening to it even outside of the film, it's just that great, give it a Grammy or smth.
Humor in this film is hilarious without being corny. It's very on the nose, what's currently happening in the scene humor. Characters (won't say who) also have amazing dynamics that supply a lot of humor for the film. Obviously we have that last snippet from the trailer and I'll give you this out of context "Mahito's turned into a parakeet"
The story is very easy to follow. The first half of the story is very grounded. And even in the second fantastical half, the visuals and little sprinkles of just the right amount of information help to guide us through the amazing fantastical world. Nothing ever feels too spoonfed to the audience or too overwhelming.
Spoilers below the cut
Character was great too. The main cast each have a very touching emotional aspect and nothing is what it seems, not from the trailers and not even within the show. Characters go on journeys you never could've expected from the beginning of the show. Such as the heron, who I genuinely thought from trailers was gna be the bad guy but turned into a genuine, squat goblin companion. And the parakeet king goddamn I thought he was gna be a good guy with his "we must protect this world" gig, not some giant cannibalistic parakeet with a surprising penchant for sneaking. Anyway, I especially loved how we meet characters almost multiple times with how we're introduced to different versions of them. Kiriko>>>
The moral of this story had me confused ngl, but I'm fcking dumb and need to go read some analysis so ignore this. The main message I got was that "Life is shit. But it's worth living and I can make it better for myself. Through friends, I don't have to be alone through it all" which made me tear up ngl since I've been struggling with life this year and seeing how our boy Mahito went from being a closed off lil squat to that *cries*. Personally I interpreted the great granduncle and his blocks as seeing what's wrong with the system the older generation has built, and demanding more from it/straight up turning away from it. Also Mahito learning to let go of his mom. The pelicans wanting the best for their children and not always liking what they have to do for survival as a link to war soldiers @hamable . I also read from @simplysparrow14 and @rockpaperimpala the film is also Miyazaki coming to the realisation that 'studio ghibli will be his legacy and it will be put to rest, it won't be the same if continued without him and that's okay' and ow I just got hit in the feels.
To summarize the boy and the heron excelled, slaps, is show stopping, brilliant, awesome, a true work of art and soul and 11000/10 go watch it ON THE BIG SCREEN I am not joking.

An accurate list of the best movies I've ever seen
This list also includes reasons that are all too objective and nonsensical. Avoid asking too many questions. And share what you think in the comments!
Tumblr media
Hercules
Hercules is probably my favourite Disney movie. And I also think that's where my interest in Greek mythology started. Hades is my favorite villain from this company and he's such a mood.
Tumblr media
The Prince of Egypt
Oh dear you don't know how much I love this movie. I know every song by heart and was lucky enough to sing them with my choir. I'm a big fan of animation and despite how old is this movie, I think it remains one of the best ever produced. I cried more times over this movie than over all the others on this list combined.
Tumblr media
Friends & Family
I only discovered this film this year but it quickly became one of my favorites. I have never laughed for so many consecutive minutes at a movie. I approached it because it's unusual to see a gay mob-themed movie, but I immediately fell in love with all the characters and the final scene remains one of the most comic I have ever seen.
Tumblr media
Treasure Planet
I have a soft spot for animated films about great adventures and self-discovery. Jim has been my only animated crush for years, and his story has always resonated with something inside of me (maybe the desire for adventure and his recklessness, idk). Plus, of course, "'I'm Still Here" is one of the most beautiful soundtracks ever created.
Tumblr media
Howl's Moving Castle
One of the first films I saw by Studio Ghibli and my absolute favourite. The love stories created by this Studio are always wonderful, and this one is no different. Plus I always saw myself in Sophie (especially about the crush on Howl) and, well, there's Calcifer, what more do you want?
Tumblr media
Les Choristes
Another thing I love: movies about music. It may be that I've been playing an instrument for years and singing in choirs, but I've always cried watching kids rediscover a new side of themselves through music and songs. And these songs are composition's masterpieces. I still remember them all by heart even though French isn't my native language.
Tumblr media
A Christmas Carol
I'm slightly obsessed with this story, with Charles Dickens and with Christmas. I was born on Christmas Eve so you can imagine how close this theme is to my heart. I have seen several versions of this story though, and for some reason, this one remains my favourite. It may be that it's different from other more colourful versions and really shows the darkness behind the original story, idk.
Tumblr media
How to Train Your Dragon
I literally grew up with this saga: I was 8 years old at the first film, 12 at the second and 17 at the third. I watched Hiccup grow up with me as a friend and Toothless as a fellow adventurer. I'll forever be grateful to Dreamworks for creating the best-animated saga that cinema has ever seen.
Tumblr media
The Three Musketeers
This movie is so random that it's perfect. I watched it again recently (after like 8 years) and realized that maybe my daddy issues come from this movie: Luke Evans, Orlando Bloom and the freaking Mads Mikkelsen together, seriously? I'm not surprised it was one of my favourite movies growing up.
Tumblr media
A Monster in Paris
The love I have for this film is enormous. I could never get over the beauty of the songs in it. The characters are so well written and Francœur will always be in my top animated characters. It's too amazing to be real.
Tumblr media
Rise of the Guardians
I could talk for hours about this film and have not even touched the tip of the iceberg. I have an insane obsession with all the characters, starting with and especially Jack, my top animated crush for years. It's all so perfect that I don't see how people never nominate it when it comes to top animated movies.
Tumblr media
The Hobbit
Again, I have serious problems with films about fantasy adventures. I have always preferred The Hobbit saga to its sequel because the story has always fascinated me more. And the main character especially: for me Bilbo >>>> Frodo. And then there's Thorin and Luke Evans. You know, daddy issues.
Tumblr media
Mune: Guardian of the Moon
Another French animated movie, another obsession, another adventure, another animated character in my top. This is an example of how to do good animation. There isn't a colour out of place. The settings are authentic, the characters are original, and the adventure they make gets me every time.
Tumblr media
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
I'm maybe a Muggle, but I prefer Fantastic Beasts to the Harry Potter saga. That's not to say it's better, mind you, but it reflects me more. We all know how we Hufflepuffs (and Ravenclaws) have no real representation in the HP movies, so to be able to have at least one prequel saga starring a Hufflepuff (in which I also find myself far too much) as the protagonist is wonderful. And I have an unhealthy urge to become a magizoologist.
Tumblr media
The Greatest Showman
It's the movie I have watched the most of these. I know every song by heart and every line too. It always manages to be a roller coaster of emotions. And it has Hugh Jackman in it.
Tumblr media
The Boy Foretold By The Stars
I'm a big supporter of the Philippine's film company. This is one movie is gentle, funny, and not based on the usual drama between Christianity and LGBT+ people (which is what I thought when reading the plot at first). Moreover, another underrated thing, the Philippines' music company here has thrown in masterpiece after masterpiece of songs, perfect for this movie.
Tumblr media
Bros
This is my top comfort film in the last year. It's like watching a Hallmark movie but hotter, much more sincere and gay. Very gay. And the relationship between the two main characters is so cute and sweet. And funny.
Tumblr media
Top Gun: Maverick
I love this saga but especially love this particular chapter. I love Maverick and his relationship with Rooster, and all the other characters are so well-written. And don't get me started on the story... I LOVE it. There isn't much else to say except that Cruise is a great actor (and a terrible person).
Tumblr media
Glass Onion - Knives Out
I love my silly little gay detective. And I have a little passion for movies and mystery series. I found this saga's chapter more compelling than the first one, and the characters gripped me more. Also I fell in love with the setting. Oh and then there are Daniel Craig and Hugh Grant.

wait omg you mentioned a bit ago that you have ocs?
Tumblr media
I DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm taking this as permission to go on a little ramble so here it is, under the cut ->
here's a messy character sheet i never finished for an OC I'm cooking up a webcomic for! This is Rin ( aka. Zen. aka. Zenshirou ) He's got red markings ( inspired by kabuki markings ) on his face that he hides with the black veil.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you'd like to know more about the story . . . I've dropped my notes app lore dump here . . .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ah jeez thats long. moving on. since I don't ever plan to continue writing anything for it ( at least not in the foreseeable future ), I have a Notion page for my high-fantasy stuff, which looks like this ->
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i've been sitting on this world for like five years now? At least, I think i started it in 2019, and it's gotten a lot more sophisticated since then ( like the languages and everything and the MAP . . . phew ). But those are the characters ( at least, some of them. the ones in the main cast bar are, well, the main cast. The ones in the ToT bar are less important but still lore-relevant ).
I also have some post-apocalyptic sci-fi stuff going on ( phew this is a lot, now that I'm looking at it ), that is more world-building and blueprints than characters at the moment ( though I do have them fleshed out--just not drawn anywhere ). I've always been really into post-apocalyptic stories, especially those with an environmentalist touch. Nausicaa is and will forever be my favorite Ghibli film. But here's some worldbuilding blueprints stuff I did for that one. These are from 2021 . . . and in desperate need of refinements clearly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and thats it!

Plotting out "Yaksha" (Disney movie)
Tumblr media
If you haven't checked out my post on my original Disney era, please check it out here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Background: Disney revives the idea for a "Jack and the Beanstalk" story, though they've no interest of making it take place in Spain like originally planned, citing the recent "Wish" film still burned in people's recent memory. Fawn Veerasuthorn (Co-director and co-screenwriter of "Wish," head of story for "Raya and the Last Dragon," and a story artist/storyboard artist/visual development artist for other recent Disney films) suggests a Thai setting, since there are many stories that revolve around Yakshas there. Though Disney is nervous about the idea due to RATLD's middling box office performance and polarized reviews on their SEA representation, Fawn points out that the former issue was COVID-related, and the latter issue can be solved by specifically focusing on Thailand. Eventually, they come around to the idea, citing how "The Princess and the Frog" was based a European tale with a fresh twist from another culture. Early on that they would gamble further by not only making the film a musical AND keeping a male lead, something they hadn't done since "Hercules" (AKA 1997). They aren't totally being risky, though; they bring over the Anderson-Lopez team, who was originally going to be used to be used for "Gigantic" (the original title for the adaptation) to write songs for it, as well as bringing in James Newton Howard in after his experience orchestrating the score for Raya. Opting to lean into potential "Avatar: The Last Airebender" parallels, Disney hires Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko as directors (and I'll be using some ATLA and TLOK pics for reference), with Matt Braly and Jared Bush creating the script. It was never established if they were going for a specific time period's influence, but the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya kingdoms were the most spoken about. Scott Watanabe does the concept art, and after a severe internal argument, they take another risk: to make it a 2D film. This is only done due to points being brought up how desires for 2D have increased (and TBATH winning "Best Animated Film" in 2024) as well as it working best in the film's favor being based on Thai art. Needless to say, Studio Ghibli plays a big influence on the art style, and the change to 2D makes production take longer to reacquaint the animation team with it, as well as getting the style they want.
Plot:
Tumblr media
(Used this picture for visual aid; courtesy of Scott Watanabe's concept art for "Raya and the Last Dragon")
A poor family made up of a man, his wife, her father, and their two children, is blessed with another child. Unable to support him, the family falls into anguish, but his grandfather has dreams of buying and planting sugarcane seeds outside the kingdom and placing the baby there overnight, and is told that the child will be cared for. He tells the family, and the boy disappears the next day, being raised by the Yaksha in a sky kingdom above. For many years, the boy--named "Cloud"--believes he belongs there, until his adoptive mother informs him of his true heritage and guides him to the stalk from which she descended to retrieve him. As he grows, Cloud descends the beanstalk to learn more about the place he would've called home, but when a jealous giant follows him and accidentally kills the crown prince of the kingdom, the King vows revenge on the Yaksha, wanting to destroy them and conquer their plentiful kingdom in the process. Cloud, as a human, must know act as a bridge between both worlds in order to prevent an all-out war from occuring.
Characters:
Tumblr media
"Cloud"--His main color is definitely blue, which references the world above that he lives in close to the sky. His nickname is a pun on his head sometimes being stuck in the clouds, as well as his easygoing and often gentle nature and the fact that he now lives in the kingdom above the clouds. He draws influences from several people (fictional or real, Thai or not) to craft a young man with a passion for peace and keeping the order between giants and humans. While he's spent most of his life in the world above, he will sometimes sneak down the sugarcane to a little village outside the human Kingdom of Khruth where he only goes by his nickname. For many years, he has befriended an elderly man, unaware that this is his grandfather. On Earth, he's known only by his nickname, with only a handful of people who know his real name, something he hardly uses (but still answers to).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Suvana--One of the princesses of Khruth, who catches Cloud napping under the mango tree outside the palace. When she discovers he is the ambassador of the Yaksha, she's surprised, having expected him to be a brutish and reckless warrior, and she is pleased to find that he is respectful, pious, and compassionate. Somewhat of a black sheep in the royal family, she often tries to find time to herself, when she can be more playful and goofy without embarrassing her family or disrupting the royal status quo. However, despite her unique personality, she's also quite clever and mysterious, being underestimated often due to being seen as incompetent.
Note: her name is taken from Suvannamaccha, a mermaid princess from the Thai version of the Ramayana.
Tumblr media
Ngein--A mother figure to Cloud and a leader of the Yakshas who reside in the sky, she's weary of the impending war with humans, who, in their hubris, desire to conquer the sky upon hearing of even more majestic lands and priceless gems and minerals there. On top of this, one of the Yaksha's kills the crown prince in a rage, fueling the friction between both parties.
(IDK if I'd use their "Genshin Impact" designs, but it is a nice visual aid.)
Tumblr media
Sirichai--The King of Khruth who grew up with stories of giants who housed outstanding treasure and magic in the world above. When one of his sons is killed by a Yaksha, he follows it to the sugar cane and investigates the world above, and comes to the conclusion that while above him, it is still part of his kingdom, and his craving for revenge drives him to want to dominate the giants--or slaughter them for their wealth. Either or.
Songs:
Sent to Heaven--The opening song about the dreams and hopes of commoners, it focuses on Cloud's family leaving him below a sugarcane stalk after dreaming that he will live better if they do so rather than living with them. They ponder the drawbacks of this, however, as they may never see him again.
What Else is There?--After being told that he's the child of humans when he's young, Cloud begs Ngein to show him the sugarcane that peeks above the clouds, and as the years pass, he makes his way down to the human world, learning about the life he missed, with Ngein always satisfied because he always returns and because she watches him from Yaksha statues outside of temples
Underneath--Cloud rests beneath the mango tree, contemplating how large the world beneath the clouds is, and how he isn't ready to go back home. Meanwhile, Suvana talks about who she is underneath her decorum, and is simultaneously embarrassed by how she fails to live up to royal standards and sad that it alienates herself from her siblings.
Worth the Price--Sirichai makes an impassioned speech to his army to climb the sugar cane to the land above and make the giants above subservient to them. Suvana notes that despite her father's ill intentions, he does not recognize what he's doing as wrong, truly believing that his the skies above are part of his kingdom and thus his dominion.
What Else is There? (Reprise)--When Cloud is imprisoned and Suvana must go alone to persuade the giants not to kill the incoming warriors, they ponder if their desire to live and explore was always meant to end poorly, if they were better off living the lives played out for them. But then, they realize they wouldn't have met each other, and they'd always wonder "what if?"
Only Me--Having managed to avoid war and catastrophe, Cloud and Suvana marry, and they reflect on their journeys. Despite their kind hearts, they made hasty decisions that could have hurt so many people, and as they marry, they vow to each other and both kingdoms that the ceremony was not only a marriage of people, but a marriage of worlds. (Note: if I made the lyrics, it'd be "It's NOT only me")
Lemme know what you think and if you have any questions! Obviously I don't know the inns and outs of Thai culture, but lemme know if it sounds like it could work with these ideas. I may make minor changes to this. Perhaps I'll make more posts related to the rest of my fanmade Reinvention era.

Lord of the Rings as Studio Ghibli Characters: Part 2!
I’m back with Part 2 of my post where I match characters from Lord of the Rings with characters from Studio Ghibli! So here we go!
Arwen – Sophie (Howl’s Moving Castle)
Tumblr media
They’re both sweet characters who are kind to everyone, and who would go any lengths for the people they love. When it comes to the men they love, they love them with all they have, and the men see that and want to give them that love in return.
Also I had Aragorn as Howl so this seemed like the natural fit lol
Eowyn – San (Princess Mononoke)
Tumblr media
They’re both warriors, or at the very least want to fight like ones, San for the forest and Eowyn for Rohan. They both have a fierce desire to fight and defend their homes, and they both have internal struggles as well (San with her identity and Eowyn is interpreted as having depression).
Rosie Cotton – Lisa (Ponyo)
Tumblr media
Yeah I’m including Rosie what’re you gonna do about it lol nothing that’s what
While we don’t get much of Rosie in the movies, in the books, Rosie has a pretty good personality! She strikes me as being pretty tough (I mean, she survived the Shire nearly being destroyed) and she’s very sweet and loving towards others. And similarly, Lisa is a tough woman who’s raising Sosuke alone while her husband’s away, but she’s a great mom and immediately takes in Ponyo and cares for many people!
Faramir – Baron Humbert Von Gikkingen (The Cat Returns)
Tumblr media
Okay admittedly this seems like an out of left field choice. But when you think about it, they both are people who have identity and the sense of self as part of their stories! The Baron always encourages Haru to trust herself and not lose who she is; while in the books, Faramir is incredibly secure in his identity and it allows him to reject the idea of taking the Ring for Gondor “to prove his quality”, something he doesn’t need to do because he already KNOWS his quality! Meanwhile in the films, Faramir learns he doesn’t have to prove his quality to his father and that his identity doesn’t have to be what his father wants.
Saruman – Yubaba (Spirited Away)
Tumblr media
Saruman and Yubaba are similar in that they’re the opposite of Gandalf and Zeniba. Yubaba and Zeniba are equally powerful, but Yubaba is the one that uses her power for greedy purposes. And similarly, Saruman, who is a Maiar like Gandalf, decides to use his power to destroy and conquer.
Lady Galadriel – Granmamare (Ponyo)
Tumblr media
They’re both extremely powerful women, and they always seem to know exactly what’s going on throughout the story. Galadriel is perceived as a higher being with her beauty and powers as a High Elf, while Granmamare IS a higher being (a goddess). Also they’re both played by Cate Blanchett and have malewife-energy husbands lol
Lord Elrond – Moro (Princess Mononoke)
Tumblr media
(Okay, truth be told, Elrond was pretty difficult lol) To me, the vibes of these two are quite similar! They both have a history of being fierce warriors, and are higher beings in comparison to other characters—Elrond being an elf and Moro being a forest god—and they both help the main characters on their journeys. They also take in lost orphans and raise them as their own!
Theoden – Mahito (The Boy and the Heron)
Tumblr media
Both of these characters have a theme of despair/grief in their stories and not giving into it. Mahito spends much of his film trying to come to terms with his mother’s death, and despite people’s best efforts, that process has some scars, but he is able to figure out the path towards healing. And rather like Mahito, Theoden spends much of his story struggling to not give in to his despair and to come back from how he was possessed by Saruman and used like a puppet; and in the end, he is able to reject despair, ride triumphantly into battle, and face death without shame.
And that’s all! Let me know if I should do The Hobbit characters!

Spirited Away Twitter Q&A Translations
Multiple theories debunked/confirmed and we're given answers on how Haku and Chihiro can meet again! Ghibli finally answered a lot of popular questions!
When the official Ghibli twitter was first active back in 2022, it held a Q&A during a Spirited Away rerun. I don't think anyone's ever posted about it on here so I thought I'd share these translations I found! Most of these answers are completely new information about the movie. Here's a site that archived all the tweets and trivia.
The credit to these translations and notes go to atrociouscheese.
Q: Is it true about the rumors that "Spirited Away" has an subsequent story about a phantom after, and that it was shown only in some movie theaters? Or is it just an urban legend?
A: It's an urban legend. Miyazaki: "At first, I was planning to start from Chihiro's house. Chihiro's room was a path for yokai, and she talked about going to a bathhouse with my mother. But I quit because it felt dull. So it would be interesting if such rumors were circulating!"
Q: Why did you decide on the title "Sen and Chihiro's Spirited Away"? (referring to the Japanese title of Spirited Away which is: Sen to Chihiro Kamikakushi) Were there any other candidates for the title?
A: At the stage of the completed proposal that was drafted on November 2, 1999, it was "Sen's Spirited Away". At some stage, the movie was titled "Sen and Chihiro's Spirited Away" because it was about Chihiro's story.
Q: What is the meaning of the mysterious Daruma-like rock in front of the tunnel?
A: The image board says "Stone person (actually a frog person)"...
Q: Do you have any plans to build that tunnel in Ghibli Park?
A: I asked Goro, who is building the acclaimed Ghibli Park under construction.
Goro said: "I'm making 'that tunnel' in 'that work'~ (laughs)"
Q: The mother feels a little cold to Chihiro. I've always been wondering if there's any reason or if she's a cool person by nature.
A: Animation director, Masashi Ando, said that he wanted to not have the image of father and mother that appear in Miyazaki's work, and he said that he set it with an awareness of "a person who is cool and not in a place where family harmony is disturbed".
Q: How did the main character come to be named Chihiro?
A: Chihiro was modeled on Miyazaki-san's friends who were around 10 years old at the time (including some of their names). After the first preview, Mr. Miyazaki was there before anyone else to hear the children's impressions of the film.
Q: I'd like to know more in detail about the objects and places you used as references in creating this work.
A: There is no specific location "here". Mr. Miyazaki recalls the places he once visited and draws while imagining places he cannot remember. The restaurant district in the mysterious town that appears at the beginning of the film was said to have been drawn with an image of the entertainment districts of Yurakucho and Shinbashi.
Q: Are Kamaji and the working soot sprites (Japanese uses makkuro kurosuke) the same species? Or are they similar but different?
A: The official name of makkuro kurosuke is "Susuwatari". That's what it says on the storyboard, so it's not wrong to say that it's the same species. Initially, there was a plan that rice and sesame were their favorite foods, but now konpeito became their favorite.
Q: Are the characters portrayed in human form like Lin, human? Or are they other creatures?
A: The employees of the bathhouse are frogmen for the men and female slugs for the women. This is symbolic of the fact that to the new employees joining Ghibli, all the uncles look the same. Lin may look human because she is a close senior. Doesn't that happen to you?
Q: I want to know more details about of the chicks who are crammed in the bath!
A: It's a chick god called "Otori-sama." By the way, the one who is also soaking in the hot water is the "Cow Demon." According to Miyazaki, he thought, "Today's Japanese gods must be having a hard time," and that's how the bathhouse was born, where gods and yokai can heal their fatigue. 20 years later, the bathhouse may be even more prosperous now...
Q: Why did Radish spirit (Oshira-sama is used here) follow Chihiro upstairs?
A: The spirit became interested in Chihiro and got on the elevator together with her, but they didn't like Yubaba's room, so they descended immediately (it's written in the storyboard).
Q: How many years ago was the world of the bathhouses set from now?
A: It's modeled on the "pseudo-Western" buildings that were popular from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period, so it can be interpreted as after that.
The actual model is Studio Ghibli. To work for Studio Ghibli, you have to go to Toshio Suzuki on the top floor and say, "Please let me work" (laughs).
Q: I really like the flood-like atmosphere of the flowers in the scene where Chihiro slips through the flowers before eating rice balls. Did you change the expression technique for only that scene?
A: For that scene, the flowers are drawn with paint and are then animated to have depth on the computer.
Q: I felt that the onigiri that Haku gave Chihiro were white rice balls, but did they contain any contents inside?
A: The storyboard says, "3 onigiri (without seaweed)". I'll leave it to your imagination to see whether it contained any ingredients in them (not that there was any wasabi).
Q: How many years has Haku lived approximately?!! He looks like a boy, but...!
A: His appearance is about 12 years old, but his actual age is unknown. He's kind during the daytime when Yubaba is sleeping, but is cold at night. According to Miyazaki, Chihiro is like falling in love with a manager. "What was that about last night?"
Q: Is No Face (Kaonashi is the original Japanese used)'s movement a little cat-like...? I personally think that, but are there any animals that you used as reference?
A: I don't have any "animals" as a reference, but the staff at that time said, "I felt like I was collecting the obsession that everyone had, the parts of people that were sick."
Q: I want to know the rating of the bathhouse bills! I wonder how many kinds there were and what rank of the tag Kasuga-sama was.
A: There are no ratings, but the efficacy of hot water is different for each tag.
Q: Is No Face a god? Is there a reason why they couldn't enter the bathhouse?
A: No Face is not a god, but Miyazaki said at the time that "No Face is inside everyone."
Q: Do many Ghibli staff have special feelings for Chihiro? Were there any celebrations among the staff on the 20th anniversary?
A: The studio does not do so-called "anniversary celebrations". Miyazaki and Suzuki's idea is to do what is in front of them without looking back on the past.
Q: I heard that most of the dishes that appear in the movie are made at least once, but was that big steamed bun (meat bun?) that Chihiro was chewing on also made by hand?
A: We don't cook all the meals that appear in the film. Miyazaki says, "Most of the food that appears in the movies are usually things I made and ate a long time ago."
By the way, the fried egg that appears in Laputa and Howl is said to have been drawn based on his memory of making a fried egg when he was a student, returning home from a long trip without any money and starving.
Q: Why is the name No Face?
A: At the drawing meeting at that time, Miyazaki said that Yubaba, No Face, and Chihiro are all "one aspect of the individual." Everyone has both good and bad points. I think he created a character called No Face as a symbol of human beings that cannot be drawn in a one-sided way (I answered seriously).
Q: When the film was released overseas, I was wondering what kind of responses and impressions people had about the unique concepts of Japan, such as Japanese gods and "spirited away/kamikamushi" had. Also, was it made in consideration of reactions from overseas at the time it was produced?
A: It varies from country to country. In some countries, the appearance of No Face became "silence", and other countries burst into laughter. Miyazaki does not make movies conscious of overseas reactions. Suzuki says, "If Japanese people make something that only Japanese people can do, it will become a global work."
Q: Why is Boh drawn so big?
A: It's a symbol of growing up as a child. It seems that Yubaba can't help but spend money on Bo.
Q: "Spirited Away" is the voice acting debut of Ryunosuke Kamiki, who has done voice acting in numerous anime. I heard that Ryunosuke was called to Ghibli's studio after recording his voice at home and sending in a tape because it was an audition. I would like to ask why you cast Kamiki in the role of Boh.
A: At first, people with big bodies were nominated for the voice of Boh. Miyazaki's face lit up the moment when he heard the voice of Kamiki who was eight years old at the time, he shouted, "This one, Mr. Suzuki!" and he decided.
Q: Please tell me how to distinguish between Yubaba and Zeniba.
A: At the image board stage, there was a clear difference between Zeniba and Yubaba. At the storyboarding stage, they thought it would be better to make them look exactly alike. One staff member said, "Yubaba has one wart on her chest and Zeniba has four warts on her chest." But I can't confirm it (laughs).
Q: Kamaji says that Zeniba is scary, but she is a gentle grandmother in the movie. Why did Kamaji say that Zeniba was scary?
A: People who look kind are the scariest when they get angry.
Q: Why did you make the scene of "I can't forgive you!" Dragon Ball-style? How did Yubaba hit such an orb?
A: The storyboard says "Dragon Ball style" (laughs). It's not clear why she was able to shoot an orb, but Miyazaki said, "Yubaba is an old woman who can swim in the air."
Q: I have a question about trains. Is there a reason why we used to come and return in the old days, but now we can only go one way? I would like to know if there are any settings.
A: During a drawing meeting, Miyazaki remarked, "All the employees of the bathhouse dream of saving money to open a store in the town beyond the bridge. Will they go for leisure? But if you get on the train you’ll never be able to come back and this will be gone.”
Q: Where was the scene that took the most time to draw?
A: If there are a lot of characters, the scene will take a lot of time, though I can't say in general that this cut took the most time. It is unclear what scene took the most time but Miyazaki often fixed Chihiro's small gestures, and in particular, Miyazaki seems to have, with all his effort, corrected the scene where Chihiro received the hair tie from Zeniba and tied her hair.
Q: What was the most difficult dubbing scene?
A: Kamaji, who is played by Bunta Sugawara, speaks a lot slowly, so it was difficult for Sugawara to get it on scale. Rumi Hiiragi was having a hard time with saying "one, OK?" from the line "one, OK? I can't call one flower a bouquet". And Miyu Irino tried many times with "Nigihayamikohakunushi"
(translation note: her line in Japanese, what "one, ok" sounds like is "ippon, ne." Japanese changes numbers when it comes to counting items, so one which is ichi becomes ippon when it comes to counting the bouquet. So instead of saying, "One, okay" she said "one okay") Additionally, I actually know what they're referencing and you can actually see the dubbing behind the scene difficulties they're talking about in this video uploaded on Youtube: video here
Q: How do you write Haku's real name "Nigihayamikohakunushi" in kanji (Chinese characters)? I am wondering if it is the characters for "amber river" (琥珀川) or "small white river" (小白川). I would like to know if there is a meaning to "Nigihayahimi"!
A: Although it is written in katakana in the setting, the name "Nigihayami" is said to be the composite of several gods including Nigihayahi (nigihayami-no-mikoto), the ancestor of the Monobe clan who fought against the Soga clan during the Asuka period, and Hayakitsuhiko, the river god and dragon incarnation.
Q: How did Chihiro find out that her mother and father were not inside the pig pen in the end?
A: I'm not sure of the reason, but please read the children's book called "Krabat", which Miyazaki was greatly influenced by.
Q: Is there any reason why Chihiro's hair tie sparkled brightly at the end?
A: That hair accessory is the only proof that Chihiro worked at the bathhouse. I think it can be said that it is a (choice by) stage direction to give that impression (of the sparkling).
Italics is my inference, but I'm not 100% sure.
Q: How many days did it take for Chihiro to get lost in the mysterious city, work in the bathhouse, and exit the tunnel?
A: Mr. Suzuki advocates the three-day theory. When her father and mother get into the car as if nothing had happened, the inside of the car is covered with dust, so the passage of time may be different here from the tunnel.
Q: Why is going into the tunnel different on the way back?
A: When I asked Noboru Yoshida, an art staff member, he answered, "It depends on the passage of time." Does that means that the "three-day theory" collapses...?
Q: Did Chihiro and Haku meet after that?
A: Haku was the spirit of the river that flows near the house where Chihiro used to live. If Chihiro ever visits the river...

Howl’s moving castle by Diana Wynne Jones
Genre: fantasy
POV: Sophie Hatter (3rd person)
Main characters: Sophie, Howl Jenkins, Calcifer, Michael Fisher
Settings: Kingdom of Ingary (magical realm) and Wales (UK)
Fav quote: “May your bacon burn!” (Write in the comments who is the one saying it;) )
I hope that all of you have watched the movie from Ghibli because it's beautiful! I mean the pictures are incredible and so is the story. Obviously the presence of a certain gorgeous mage is also a good point... I won't lie he was one of the reasons why I ended up reading the book. I heard many comments about how different the book was from the movie, especially regarding Howl and Sophie's personalities and relationship. So here I am telling you all that it was worth it.
In fact, I discovered that the feeling reading the book is the same you get from the film. Relationships between characters (not only Howl and Sophie) are deeper.
For example you might remember Michael from the movie. Ghibli’s version was a lil boy with ginger hair but in the book he is older and (spoiler! Don’t read if you want a surprise) in love with Sophie’s younger sister Martha. Yes because in the book Sophie has two sisters and there’s romance for both.
Eventually the book was verg good, different from the movie but in a good way and also made me appreciate the film even more. Some sequences of the book make much more sense now and I appreciated a lot some scenes that Ghibli brought in the movie identical to how they were in the book.
Atmosphere and plot are basically the same and also the ending is very similar. Fro someome it might be a deterrent but since I like to discover more about the evnts and characters I found it interesting anyway.
Probably I will write a new post with the differences between the book and the movie but for now I leave you with this review. Hope you enjoy!

Movie Night- CSM
What your fav is choosing for movie night!- Power, Kobeni, Reze, Asa/Yoru, Quanxi(+the gfs), Makima, and Himeno
a/n: first post that i am making from a computer waaaahhh, sorry if it’s bad lol I watched some movies today and i wanted to share what I think some of the characters from CSM would watch! I hope you guys enjoy, also trying to branch out writing some of the characters so there's a bit more in this one i think. Also all movies choosen are just ones that i think they would watch, these are also mostly movies I’ve watched! some of these movie choices suck/are probs overused
POWER:
Power has a very versatile list of movies that she wants to watch every single time
Getting to watch a movie dates are most likely her reward from you for bathing or being good
Power’s pick of a good movie are mostly likely horror movies. The more gorey the better, the more blood shown the better as well.
Always laughing at the horrific scenes
Doesn’t like horror movies where the people have to go through elaborate puzzles to live. Power finds those boring and way to long. (Definitely not disliking Saw)
Power’s go to movie is Texas Chainsaw Massacre! It reminds her of Denji and she likes taking notes of what’s going on then asking Denji if he’s able to do the things that were in the movie.
While watching the movie, Power is really invested! Finds the movies very interesting. Holds Meowy up to see the screen while asking Meowy questions.
“Meowy, don’t you think the movie is interesting? Oh wow! Look at him chopping up that human! Weaklings! I would never be killed in such a way.”
KOBENI:
Kobeni likes movies that have a nice storyline and cute characters!
When she’s able to, Kobeni always choosen a movie that makes her feeling happy! She’s most likely choosing a Studio Ghibli film or a popular romance film!
Howl’s Moving castle is one of Kobeni’s favorite movies to watch on her days off. She likes to be able to be in her pajamas while laying either on the couch or on the bed cuddling with you. Maybe even having a snack or two nearby.
She loves pointing out detail in the scene as well as repeating some of the lines that she knows by heart, though she’ll get embarrassed if you tease her about it.
Kobeni especially loves it when you remember little facts that she tells you about the movie!
“uhh, I know it’s not in the movie, but Sophie.. Sophie actually has powers in novel! I really think they could’ve added it in the movie but I suppose it makes the movie storyline move better. AH! Sorry, I was rambling!”
Kobeni’s favorite character is Turnip Head! She finds Turnip Head helping Sophie along in her adventures adorable!
REZE:
Action Movies with a bit of romance!
While it might be a bit cheesy, Reze likes movies that have both action and some romance. She think it’s nice that throughout all the violence that occurs that the main character and their love interest can still fall in love.
Her top movie of this kinda of movie is Divergent.
She likes the main character and finds the storyline exciting and interesting.
Definitely read the book series and liked it just as much, maybe even better than movie itself.
Likes explaining niche details in the movie, maybe slightly spoiling the movie/book itself.
“So in this scene, you can see that she’s about to get a tattoo, but your gonna wanna notice the kind of tattoo it is! This will be important for later in the movie and- Heyy (y/nn) are ya listening?”
definitely looks up the actors to see what other movies/shows they’re apart of
Reze also nit picks certain parts of the movie and how they differ from the book
ASA/Yoru
Asa doesn’t really watch movies. I see her watching more documentaries than movies.
Likes watching documentaries with you on different topics from oceanic life to ancient greece life.
Doesn’t really talk during these moments you both are watching, but will pause to discuss part of it with you or to correct the speaker about how the information they said was slightly incorrect. (mostly does that during oceanic documentaries)
“I disagree with what they said. While yes you can eat starfish, you have to be careful. A large handful of starfish are poisonous and it’s dangerous to eat them. You can differentiate between them though but that would involve you having to do your own research about such a topic. I don’t see you having to eat those anytime soon, plus if you did-”
Asa is always proud when you praise her for knowing so much. Even offering to teach you a bit more as a study date!
Yoru doesn’t really watch movies or anything but does also like documentaries. Specifically, about weaponry or even wars.
Watching the weaponry documentaries provides her with more ideas for weapons. Likes to also watch the clips of the weapons being made.
War documentaries are a bit different with Yoru though. She oddly proud of them and wishes for you to praise her for them, going so far as to slightly nudge you to hopefully prompt you to compliment such awful events.
“Y’know, I’m the one who cause all of that. Such memorable events came from me! It’s shame that nobody else seems to remember them, ah! But you can boast about how your dating someone so powerful if you wish.”
You might have to explain why those aren’t boastful events even if she pouts.
QUANXI(+the gfs):
Quanxi doesn’t choose what movie is being watched. She usually lets you and the other girls choose.
However, it isn’t unusually for her to be a tie breaker for a movie. Depending on the movie and her mood, she’ll choose whichever she feels more like watching.
These can range from a horror movie (Cosmo’s choice being Halloween) to mystery movies (Pingsti choice being Where the Crawdads Sing)
Quanxi usually chooses the movie of whoever she hasn’t been paying more attention to.
A cuddle pile always occurs during the movies in which almost everyone falls asleep.
Snacks are also always present during these movie nights too. A whole buffet of choices
Quanxi most likely feeds one of the girls and the rest then all ask to be fed there choice of snack
“Eveyone got to eat there snack right? Oh (y/n), c’mere, you got a little somethin’ on your mouth.”
This leads to movie getting completely forgot, sometimes it’s a wonder why a movie night is even held.
MAKIMA:
While a bit of a mystery, one thing that’s for certain about Makima is her love for films.
Makima loves having movies night, especially when you choose then film. She likes to know the reasoning behind your choice.
Are you sad or mad? Perhaps in a mood for laughs? Romantic movies perhaps you wish for something to happen throughout the movie?
Whatever the reason is, Makima enjoys watching you pick movies.
Makima usually chooses films that might make no sense or that have an artsy way of videography. Though she usually doesn’t say anything or show much emotion during the film
Makima doesn’t really have a favorite film. She likes ones that can make her feel emotions that she might not normally.
A film I believe Makima might genuinely like is Titanic. While an old movie and probably over used movie, it still has a nice storyline and pretty visuals.
“This movie is quite interesting. Were you interested in the romantic aspect of the film or perhaps the tragedy that was the boat sinking? Truly an interesting event, yes?”
Whatever the movie choice is, Makima is sure to even slightly enjoy even if it isn’t something she likes or usually watches.
HIMENO:
On the days that Himeno isn’t working or out drinking with her friends in the division, Himeno enjoys watching movies all day in her pajamas while eating either take out or whatever she has in her house with you.
She always welcome a nice laugh, so comedy movies are definitely her favorites.
Himeno especially likes movies that feature Adam Sandler
Whether that be Grown Ups or Hotel Transylvania, she doesn’t mind.
Loves quote random lines even if the lines are cringey.
Will probably watch any/all comedy movies the she can get her hands on. As long as she can get a good laugh she’s fine with it!
Definitely calls you to tell you that she bought five new movies that you both just have to watch right that moment.
“ Okay so before you come home, head to the convivence store near our place and buy an assload of snacks, OH! And drinks, can’t forget those, No need to grab any beer, i think there’s already some in the fridge. See you at home, ‘kay?”
Overall, Himeno is probably chill with whatever kind of movie you want to watch, but prefers things with comedy or atleast a comedic relief.

Last movie review of 2023, Migration!
Okay I think this might be one of the best animated movies of 2023! "Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken" and "Under the Boardwalk" were the two best, and "Migration" and is the third best. These movies were so incredible and well done. I fell in love with the visuals and scenery, and the animation for Migration overall. The characters were definitely a 10/10 though! I mostly loved how Gwen was more than just the cute sidekick, but she was the cute sidekick who was also sassy and a little bit daring too. Her brother (i think his name was Dax?) was an optimistic and daring character too! He was fearless and also a good character too. I really loved how they focused on Pam and Mac as well, and made them good parents but also showed their struggles on protecting the family. Pam was so optimistic, she kind of reminded me Ginger from Chicken Run. She was such an icon! My favorites had to be Pam and Gwen! I also loved Delroy and Uncle Dan! They were so funny! Awkwafina also played a unique character too (she voiced a tough greaser pigeon).
I also would like to talk about the villain's design and personality. He didn't speak, they just had an evil chef who just growled and tried to get the ducks. They didn't show much human interactions in the movie but the only bad human was the chef character. He looked like the a super rich chef guy, with gold on him and stuff (He had white hair with gold bands). I liked his funny face too! Also, the other humans didn't seem to be that bad either, it was one person who wanted to eat the ducks. They weren't portraying all the humans as animal-eating monsters.
Another thing is that the art style and everything looked a little different from Illumination's usual movies, seeing really big eyed cartoony birds that were the main focus. Dreamworks, Illumination, and Aardman are dethroning Disney and I'm all here for it! I hope Ghibli does too when the "Boy and the Heron" dub comes out. I'm just happy that Illumination is going to be known for something other than annoying minions. Also, before you say anything, the short film that was before Migration WAS a Despicable Me one but it focused more on that Vector guy and him getting off the moon, as well as showing the minions as comic relief which was fine (tbh Vector himself is funnier). Seeing that animated short made me think of when Disney used to do stuff like that, and I'm happy that Illumination did that. I mostly just enjoyed Migration and I think it was beautiful!
Last of all, the thing I loved most was probably that salsa dance scene when they played that Beyonce song that goes like, "I'm a survivor" but it was a jazzy version of it and it just blended with the movie so well! Whoever chose that song deserves a raise! Also, that was such a cute scene between Mac and Pam. I love how they showed that adults have flaws once in a while, and focus on the adult ducks as much as the kids. This movie was so so cute!
Into 2024, I'm hoping that I would get to see the movie "Butterfly Tale", which according to my best friend who's in Canada and got to see it (I'm an unfortunate American who missed out). If you have any info about Butterfly Tale, please tell me! The best movies this year I'd say are Butterfly Tale, Ruby Gillman, Migration, and Under the Boardwalk. Tell me YOUR favorite animated movies of 2023! Go on! Don't be afraid to express your opinion in my comments, even if it's different from mine!

We are not judging how bad the movie is, we are judging which adapted the book the worst. There are good movies that are bad adaptions.
Propaganda below the cut (spoilers may apply)
Ready Player One:
Personally, I think the movie was infinitely better than the book because the main character in the book is such a BITCH and he just radiates incel musk, but I loved the movie a lot more. However, the movie did way more show and pizzazz with the easter egg hunting than in the book
THEY CUT OUT THE MASTURBATION SCENE
the movie barely followed the book plot and took a lot of creative liberties with character designs that completely changed certain themes within the book
Tales from Earthsea:
I don't think it could have been better, but it was just so off from from the books it was mainly drawing its inspiration from (I mean, I had no interest in seeing that weird weaver guy decide to off himself in the boat, but still).
Studio Ghibli is the perfect studio to capture the Le Guin vibe and yet Goro torched it so hard for no reason
To give credit where it is due, the film has some good settings and animation. Unfortunately, its beauty is only on the surface, and it is the worst Studio Ghibli movie I’ve seen. (I’ve seen almost all of them but Earwig and the Witch.) The plot is a collage of random bits of context from the first four books of the series, as well as its own stuff. It really is not the same story at all. I may have enjoyed it more if I had seen it as a child before reading the books, but not covering all the events exactly isn’t the only issue, it’s just worse. It takes the moral complexity and sensibility of the original and turns it into a typical fantasy war between good and evil (the Japanese title even translates to Ged’s War Chronicles) with emphasis on physical violence, in which evil is personified as a goth queer-coded villain whose death resolves everything. It completely misses the point of the books, which gives no such simple answers and is more focused on the darkness within everyone than an external battle. Where is the nuance? It also whitewashes everyone: most of the characters in the book are dark-skinned, but in the movie…
I was also bitter that they did my favourite character, Tehanu/Therru, dirty. She’s supposed to be horribly scarred and disfigured on half her body and reviled by people as a monster but in the movie she’s just a pretty girl with a red mark on her face. In the books, she doesn’t appear until the fourth book, Tehanu, which takes place after Lebannen is grown up and ruling a kindgom, and in which she is a mostly-nonverbal child. But here she’s aged up and thrown into the earlier story to give the protagonist a love interest and the film has him stay with them so it can focus on their romance. Even though a plot-relevant part of his character as well is his lack of interest in women and not settling into a relationship despite the people’s wishes.
Basically, they whitewashed, heteronormatized, macho-ified, and de-nuanced the narrative, and also took out the feminism.
On top of this, trying to cram the whole series into one movie is just not a good idea, and it would have been better to just decide on one book to adapt and do more justice. And yet they still added in so much that didn’t happen. When you have that much material to cover, you don’t have time or budget to be putting other things in, mate. Turning four books into one results both in a mess. Abridgment is one thing; taking particular aspects of different parts of the timeline and combining them in different ways is another. It doesn’t make a lot of sense. It’s in an unfortunate middle area where it doesn’t follow the source material but also doesn’t give enough context that people unfamiliar with the source understand. For Earthsea fans, it’s infuriating; for others, it’s confusing. Also, why did they name it after the fifth book, which is a short story collection that it doesn’t reference whatsoever?
The failure of the movie is upsetting because the books are sooo good. Yet, it was the highest-grossing Japanese movie of the year, and did win a couple awards… The Bunshun Kiichigo awards for “Worst Director” and “Worst Movie”.

Not a new OC but the main character of A GORGEOUS ANIME!!! He’s called the medicine seller and he’s from Mononoke. Not to be confused with the ghibli film Princess Mononoke.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HES LITERALLY MY EVERYTHING. I watched the anime (the original) a very long time ago but I recently found out it was reanimated(?). So my Mononoke craze is back.

South Africa only got tv in 1976, which is very late compared to other countries (neighbouring Rhodesia [Zimbabwe] had tv since 1960 for example) partly because the apartheid government didn't want to risk people seeing race mixing in foreign shows and radio was easier to censor
so it's a little surprising that the 1980 American miniseries Shōgun was broadcast here, and became quite popular while my mother was a student ; she and her friends enjoyed it. "waskarimas" (a mispronunciation of "wakarimas(u)") even made it into her friend group's ideolect (homadalect ?). and of course I grew up with Pokémon and Studio Ghibli films and was interested in Japan, so she'd mention the show occasionally
I watched Shōgun (1980) when I was in uni and it had not aged well. it was interesting to watch in the same way all old media is interesting : the writing and pacing is very different to modern shows, the framing/mise-en-scène can feel a little odd and all of that may be charming. but the depiction of the Japanese characters was a bit one dimensional an frankly, orientalist. we see everything through straight white man John Blackthorne's perspective and he is the driving force of the plot.
now I'm chronically out of the loop and only started watching the new FX series Shōgun (2024) last night with my mother. we're two episodes in and it feels like the complete inverse of the 1980 series. the Japanese characters are central and the political intrigue of the Five Regents is absolutely fascinating ! Toranaga feels like the real main character. it's almost as though they've kept John Blackthorne in out of obligation and part of me wishes the writers had rather just written an original historical drama set in 17th Century Japan. and they could even have kept the Portuguese/Catholic presence as a point of tension that's interesting enough.
anyway, I do enjoy a persiod drama so I'm having a great time with Shōgun (2024) (so far !). I particularly liked the motif on Toranaga's kimono in the first scene he's introduced in Ep. 01 while on horseback. (can't take a screenshot on streaming platforms alas)
my mother's review so far is that the new Blackthorne is not as attractive as Richard Chamberlain was in the 1980 version

Favorite Books I've Read in 2023 (so far)
So fun fact I read a lot, here are my top 10 books that I’ve read so far this year, in the order I read them. Never really posted this sort of thing on tumblr before but I thought I’d give it a try.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book details and some of my thoughts under the cut.
A Thousand Steps Into Night by Traci Chee (2022)
YA Fantasy
A Thousand Steps Into Night is a book I 100% picked up because of the cover and because it was super cheap. I hadn’t ever heard anything about the book or author. The best way I can describe this novel is that reading it conjured up the same feelings that I get from watching a Ghibli film. Our protagonist Miuko is an ordinary girl from a small village until one day she is cursed and slowly begins transforming into a demon. Hoping to find a way to break the curse, she begins to travel the land meeting lots of colorful characters, gods, and mythic figures along the way. It’s a very atmospheric and wonderfully written book that pulls a lot of inspiration from Japanese mythology and folklore
A Restless Truth by Freya Marske (2022)
Romance/Fantasy
This is the second book in the Last Binding trilogy. I feel like you could probably get away with skipping the first book if you wanted to since both books are somewhat self-contained, but why would you? The first book (A Marvellous Light) is awesome. Our story takes place in an alternate-Edwardian England where magic is real and certain people can practice it, unbeknownst to the rest of the non-magical population. Maud Blyth, a non-magical person who has the privilege of knowing about magic, is working with members of the magical community as well as her brother (the protagonist from the first book) to prevent a dangerous magical contract form falling into the wrong hands. She is travelling on an ocean liner when the old woman in her care ends up dead. Cue the murder mystery shenanigans and sapphic romance!
Kiss Her Once for Me by Alison Cochrun (2022)
Romance
I actually read this book twice this year, once by myself and once for my book club. It has what is quite possibly one of the most bonkers rom-com plots I’ve ever seen and I love how ridiculous it is. Basically, our main character Ellie meets a women in Powell’s books and they have a magical, Christmas one-night-stand. Fast forward almost one year later, Ellie is having a difficult time out here in good-old Portland, OR after getting fired from her dream job and having to instead rough it as a barista. In a last-ditch effort to not lose her apartment, she agrees to marry her job’s landlord so he can get his inheritance and Ellie gets a percentage in exchange. However, it turns out that her one-night-stand from last year is her new fake-fiancé’s sister. GASP! The only place this book loses points for me is that there’s too many goddamn Taylor Swift references.
The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer (2021)
YA Sci-Fi
If I had to pick a favorite out of all these books it would be this one. Reading this book felt like getting hit by a bus. Our POV character is Ambrose Cusk, an astronaut aboard the Coordinated Endeavor who has been sent on a mission into deep space to rescue his sister. His only companion is another boy named Kodiak who comes from a rival nation (think Cold War-ear space race). As they slowly start to interact with one another it becomes clear that for some reason neither one of them have any memory of the ship’s launch. The only knowledge they have of what’s going on comes from the ship’s internal computer and infrequent communications from Earth. As they begin to investigate, they discover a lot more than they bargained for. The first half of this book is like your typical gay space adventures and then at like the 50% mark onwards the rug gets pulled out from under you and you just have to go WHAT THE FUCK and then when you finish the book you just have to pretend like you’re fine and can move on with your life (you can’t). My only complaint is that this book should not have been YA, like there’s absolutely 0 reason for it to be.
Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley (2021)
YA Thriller
This book was unexpected for me. I have a habit of just reading books I know absolutely nothing about because someone, somewhere said it was good and because I think the cover is pretty. For some reason I assumed this would be a fantasy book but it’s actually a thriller/mystery novel, which is not at all a genre I typically go for. Our main character, Daunis Fontaine, is a biracial Ojibwe girl who loves hockey and her community. Her status as an unenrolled member of her tribe has her stuck with a foot in each world. After a family tragedy, circumstances push her to agree to work undercover with the FBI in order to find the source of a dangerous substance that has infiltrated her community and threatens the lives of those she cares about. I found Daunis to be an extremely compelling character with a strong narrative voice. Watching all the layers of the mystery getting peeled away through her investigation was extremely satisfying. She uses mainstream scientific knowledge in tandem with more tribal specific knowledge of botany and medicine in order to figure things out, which I thought was super cool. This is another book where I feel like it could’ve gotten away with not being YA, but I don’t feel as strongly about it as I do in regards to The Darkness Outside Us.
In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune (2023)
Sci-fi
Where to even begin this one… Have you ever wanted a book that was partly a story about a robot found family on post-apocalyptic Earth and partly a Pinocchio retelling? Yeah me either, but I’m so glad I got it. Victor Lawson is a human raised by robots. He has a peaceful existence with his android father and other mechanical friends until his curiosity unknowingly alerts robots from his father’s former life to their existence. Vic’s father is captured and it’s up to the rest of the family to rescue him. Victor is also asexual and how he describes and navigates his asexuality was so similar to my own it was like looking in a mirror.
Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H. (2023)
Memoir
This was a wonderful memoir about a queer Muslim as she reconciles those two pieces of her identity, and the struggles she faces finding community. Growing up religious, there were a lot of experiences in this memoir that I personally related to. Something I really enjoyed is how the author retold stories from the Quran and used them to frame her own queer experiences. There was a lot about this book that was very comforting to me, and I feel like it was written in a way that was accessible and easy to understand.
Black Sun (and by extension it’s sequel, Fevered Star) by Rebecca Roanhorse (2020/2022)
Fantasy
Black Sun is the first book in the Between Earth and Sky trilogy, an epic fantasy series with a world inspired by pre-colonial American civilizations. This series has such a large and complex cast of characters, with chapters from multiple POVs, so it’s impossible to say if there is really any one protagonist. Essentially, the upcoming solar eclipse foretells the return of the crow god and the unbalancing of the status quo that has previously been maintained by an order of priests. Some characters are working to make sure this comes to pass, some hope to prevent it, and some aren’t quite sure where their loyalties lie. By the end of the first chapter I already knew I was in for a wild ride (the book opens on a mother sewing her 12-year old son’s eyes shut, ew). This series also features a queernormative world, where non-binary characters and same-gender relationships are commonplace.
This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron (2021)
YA Fantasy
This book was so cool and really had a lot going for it. Briseis Greene has the uncanny ability to grow and control plants. She and her two moms live in Brooklyn where they run a flower shop. One day, a visitor arrives to tell Bri that she has inherited an old country estate in upstate NY from her birth family. Bri wonders if this house could be the answer to her family’s financial woes and so they travel upstate where Bri begins to learn more about her abilities and her family’s history. Every answered question leads to dozens more unanswered and between strange individuals wandering the estate, townspeople who seem to know secrets, and increasing instances of violence and vandalism, Bri begins ask herself if staying here is worth it if it means her family might be in danger. This book is a queer, mythology inspired, part urban fantasy, part thriller/haunted house story, of a modern fairytale. Truly something in it for everyone.

movies (for when you want to cry)
believe it or not, my blog was supposed to be all about movies and film (thus the name filminah, innovative i know) i don't know if i enjoy torturing myself or what but here are some movies that made me cry. when marnie was there (anime 2014) - follows teen anna sasaki through a journey of self exploration that takes place due to a mysterious girl she meets named marnie. now, this is definitely not the best ghibli film ever, a little awkward at times especially in the dub but yonebayashi hiromasa does not know how to make a bad movie. the twist was kinda expected but it's ghibli and it's so damn charming you can't help but get attached to anna and marnie and feel everything the way they do. i want to eat your pancreas (anime 2018) - the title is weird, i know. an introverted boy, haruki finds out the secret of his very popular, bubbly polar-opposite-of-him classmate named sakura. she is affected with a severe pancreatic disease. the way they build the connection between the main two characters is so so good to watch, fulfilling what you know will happen in the most unexpected way and showing the aftermath of the movies major events. a silent voice (anime 2016)- this was the first movie i ever found sad enough to make me cry actual tears. ishida shoyo bullied a nishimiya shouko in middle school. shouko is deaf. now a highschooler, after being unable to commit s**c*d* he finds himself becoming friends with shouko, helping her get better and maybe himself along the way. imo this film is one of the best representations of a lead with struggling mental health and they show that incredibly well in both visuals and dialogue, kyoto animation always impresses with their work and the sound work is impeccably done with the way they establish an atmosphere or put you in a characters shoes, embodying them. link to pt 2 (to be added)
