A Few Thoughts About Hurt/Comfort

I have been asked this month to make a post about hurt/comfort in Avengers comics. And I love h/c -- I actually have a massive number of WIPs right now that are h/c -- so I am very happy to talk about it! Anyway, this is not really all that planned out and this mostly turned into an excursus on Tony Stark's pain. I'm sure you're all surprised.

Like pretty much everyone else, I'm sure, I have found that everything lately has been... pretty tough. And the coping mechanism that really got me through last year and this year was reading and writing a lot of h/c, on the theory that, however lousy a day I'm having, I can absolutely make sure that Tony Stark has a worse one. And then I can make sure he gets hugs. Wish fulfillment? Why, yes. (Once at Hallmark I was trying to find a "get well soon" card, forgot what it was called, and described it to my wife as "a hurt/comfort card.") I think Marvel Comics -- the Avengers side, in particular -- is an interesting canon for h/c for a lot of reasons. Though, honestly, if you asked me to recommend you, a hurt/comfort fan, a new fandom, I would probably just hand you some Starsky & Hutch DVDs. Go watch "The Fix" and get back to me later. If you like that, there's way more where that came from. But there's still lots to love in Marvel! Superhero comics are really a goldmine as far as the hurt side of h/c. Because superheroes, and you probably have noticed this, get hurt a lot. They get hurt repeatedly, in fantastical ways that are probably impossible in real life both physically and emotionally (at least, I don't think anyone's invented mind control yet), and even the heroes without superhuman healing powers tend to get physically hurt a whole lot worse than actual people can take. Currently in Iron Man comics, Tony has a broken back and is dealing with this by locking himself into the armor as a backboard and injecting himself with massive doses of painkillers. He's busy! He's got stuff to do! He doesn't have time to lie around and heal! So, basically, if you name a kind of pain that you would like to see happen to a character, it's probably happened to superheroes. Multiple times. The downside, though, is that comics do not really deliver that well when it comes to the comfort part of h/c. They could. It's not inherent to the medium that they don't. But because of the serial nature of comics and also the fact the primary audience is dudes who want to read about people in spandex punching each other, a lot of the time they don't really feel the need to provide closure and write about people dealing with any of the hurt. (Raise your hand if you're still annoyed with the end of Hickman's Avengers run.) But at the same time, I think that's a quality that makes Avengers ripe for h/c fanfic. Because, generally speaking, fandom likes to provide the things that canon doesn't, and fandom is more than happy to provide the comfort. If you enjoy canonical h/c in comics, I think you really can't go wrong with Iron Man. One of the big innovations of modern Marvel Comics was the concept that heroes would also suffer from relatable human problems, and in practice what this means is that a lot of heroes start with a fully-loaded angst-ridden backstory and origin story, ripe for h/c. So Tony starts out by incurring a heart injury that he fully expects is going to kill him, which he responds to by vowing he won't get close to anyone so they won't be sad when he dies, and throughout the early Silver Age is constantly on the brink of death as his heart nearly gives out on him practically every issue. And then even after his heart gets (mostly) better, there are various plots involving his armor being detrimental to his health and him choosing to fight on anyway. It's hard for me to think of another superhero hitting that particular variety of h/c in exactly the same way. Sure, superheroes risk their lives constantly, because this is how superhero comics work, but Tony is the only one I can think of who is this constantly this badly off, physically. Like, think of all the other heroes who have had a continual solo presence as fan favorites across Marvel history -- Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man, Wolverine, maybe even Deadpool. You know what those guys all have? Healing factors! For the most part, they are not running around continually on the verge of death, and while there are certainly memorable arcs involving several of them being severely injured and/or dead, you really have to work at it. It's not their constant state of affairs, whereas Tony is the kind of superhero who shows up to a fight already bleeding out under his armor. Yeah, I know Extremis gave him a healing factor. But he didn't have it very long, and also he did some extremely dangerous things while he did have it; I'm pretty sure I've never seen Wolverine saying that he'll just solve a problem by cutting off his own foot. So, anyway, yeah, there are a bunch of good arcs involving h/c for Tony. If you're looking for physical injury, he has a whole bunch of heart problems over the years, gets several new hearts, then ruins his brain, et cetera. That level of hurt is basically the background pain of Tony's life; every so often, his heart will get damaged or he'll have to live in the armor or the armor will be killing him, et cetera. If you're looking for more unusual trauma, I am, as always, going to rec Manhunt, a relatively obscure arc in late v3 (IM v3 #65-69) in which Tony has an extremely bad week. His tech is stolen and used to bomb a building. Then he gets shot in the chest. Then while he's at the hospital a nurse tries and fails to poison him, and she then tries to beat him to death. Then he checks himself out of the hospital and a helicopter shoots missiles at him. Then he becomes a fugitive from justice. And then, oh, yeah, he has to fight the Mandarin. It is... a lot. (Volume 3 of Iron Man is pretty good as far as h/c possibilities. You've got a lot of physical pain, Carol's drinking arc, the Sentient Armor, both DreamVision arcs, and Manhunt. Manhunt is finally supposed to be out in trade this month, by the way.) There are of course the drinking arcs, which probably count as their own type of hurt. But if you haven't read the second drinking arc (IM #160-200), please do. Marvel likes to up the stakes on events (Fear Itself, Secret Empire) by making Tony drink, and it does work, I think. I feel like I've spoken at length about Tony's drinking elsewhere so I don't really want to rehash it all here. And then there's the emotional pain. Angst and drama is something that happens to a whole bunch of characters, yes, especially in comics, but somehow Tony seems to end up with possibly more than his fair share of it. Fandom likes to make a lot of Howard Stark's A+ Parenting, so much so that you might think, if you didn't know canon, that this was just fandom running with a throwaway mention of Tony's terrible childhood and making it worse. But, no, canon really does go there with a reasonable amount of frequency. Howard's actual first appearance is in a flashback where he's ordering teenage Tony to break up with his girlfriend because she's the daughter of one of Howard's business rivals. And then we get into the verbal abuse, and the physical abuse, and the time Howard made Tony take his first drink, and the part where Howard was a demon in hell who Tony fought while he insulted him. And more! Currently, in canon, Howard is alive again and is in league with Mephisto for the express purpose of ruining Tony's life. Also when Tony was a baby, Howard tried to trade him to Dracula. I think you can make an argument that fandom is actually showing restraint when compared to canon. Tony also has a whole lot of Terrible Exes whose presence and/or former presence in Tony's life can be used for a lot of hurt. If you've read any amount of fanfic, you probably know that the exes who get the most play in fandom are Sunset Bain and Tiberius Stone -- not that Tony and Ty were ever canonically a couple, of course, but fandom is definitely enamored of this idea. Ty and Sunset both have relatively similar interactions with Tony in canon, in that they are both liars and emotional abusers, heavy on the gaslighting, with the purpose of becoming more successful than Tony. They both also attempt to murder Tony, although this is after he figures out they're evil, at least. (Yes, I know, this is not how either of them usually appear in AUs.) Tony also has a bunch of exes who also have just straight-up tried to murder or otherwise hurt him, sometimes while they are dating, and sometimes before Tony dates them: Whitney Frost, Indries Moomji, Kathy Dare, and Maya Hansen come to mind. There are probably more I'm not thinking of! But, yes, if you want to write about a guy in a series of terrible relationships, please consider Iron Man comics. If mind control is one of your favorite flavors of hurt, Tony's pretty good for that too. We all know about The Crossing. I suppose when I say "mind control" I mostly mean "armor control" because there are an awful lot of plots where someone else makes Tony's armor do whatever they want it to do and Tony is along for the ride -- Demon in a Bottle, Sentient Armor, and Execute Program are the first things that come to mind. There is also a fairly obscure What If that is What If Iron Man Lost The Armor Wars in which Justin Hammer apparently really wants Tony in a mind control collar to take off all his clothes and lounge around in his underwear. No, really. I think a lot of pain for Tony often revolves around his issues with control, generally -- his alcoholism comes into play here again. The entire aftermath of Civil War is also notable for its propensity to hurt Tony over and over and over. Is he stoically soldiering on through his grief after Steve dies? Hell, no! He cries, like, six separate times. He 100% blames himself for Steve's death. It's great. Everybody loves The Confession and the funeral in Fallen Son, but one of my personal favorites is Avengers/Invaders, in which Tony is confronted with a time-traveling Steve from WWII and in order not to screw up the timeline, he can't tell Steve he knows him. He is clearly not coping well. He shuts himself in a room with a giant wall of pictures of Steve! Also there's a part where he has to try to convince Steve he can trust him and he ends up having to tie Steve to a chair to talk to him, and Steve looks at him and asks, "Who did you kill to get where you are?" and I feel like that is probably one of the worst moments in Tony's life. No wonder he gave himself amnesia. So now we might want to ask, okay, but why is hurting Tony in fanfiction so much fun? I mean, I can tell you why I think it's fun. I can't speak for anyone else. One reason is that he is very emotional and very affected by everything he does. Sometimes you will see people complaining that the heroes of m/m fanfic cry too much and this is not realistic. This is not a problem if you're writing Tony! He can cry as much as you want and it's perfectly in character. I don't think it would be as fun to hurt him if he didn't express so much of his pain. But he does. He also feels guilty, and for me that's a very satisfying character element. If he were well-adjusted and didn't blame himself for so many things, it wouldn't be nearly as fun as watching him blame himself for everyone whose death he thinks he is responsible for, whether or not he is. And then he just keeps going, and it's, y'know, nice to watch him be resilient, too. So, I guess, I think hurting him is interesting because it's easy to hurt him, his weak points are pretty obvious, and he reacts a lot. Steve doesn't hurt quite as much as Tony does, in canon. It's certainly possible to hurt him -- I mean, they did actually kill him after Civil War, after all -- but I don't think the canonical patterns of hurting him are as numerous. Obviously deseruming Steve is a fairly popular go-to in terms of physical hurt; he's been deserumed at least three times that I know of. I think's easy to see the appeal there of taking a character who is fairly physically resilient and making him... much less so. Certainly Marvel seems to see the appeal. But other than that I don't think he has any other really common way to get physically injured. Unlike Tony, whose origin story is basically "oh no, I've acquired a disability," Steve's origin story is "I drank a serum that cured all my disabilities." Which, I mean, great wish fulfillment but there's not really as much there to poke at. Pretty much all of Steve's pain is emotional, but, unlike Tony, his pain isn't often specifically in response to someone directly, purposefully hurting him. Hickman's Avengers run is a big exception, yes. His pain seems to come up most often as a kind of situational angst. He feels like a man out of time. He feels out of touch with the modern era, with people his own age. He feels guilt because he feels responsible for Bucky's death. He feels like he can't trust the government and therefore he can't be Captain America. He worries that he doesn't know how to have a normal life. And, yes, these are deep and important worries but it's different than, like, Indries Moomji dumping Tony with the intent to make him sad enough to start drinking. Very few of Steve's villains want to personally ruin Steve's entire life the way Tony's villains do; mostly they just want to do things like bring back the Nazis. In terms of Steve's potential for h/c, I think Steve is harder to hurt than Tony is. Physically, he is definitely harder to hurt. You can deserum him, sure, but unless you want everything you write to be a deseruming fic you're probably not going to want to do that more than a couple of times. And if you want to hurt him physically while he has the serum, you have to hurt him hard. Usually past the point where a regular human would ever survive it. He's also harder to break, emotionally, than Tony is -- which means it's very satisfying when you can get him to break, but this is a guy who's only cried twice (that I remember) in canon. So if you want to get him to cry, you really, really have to wreck him, and he doesn't have as many obvious weak spots. He also doesn't generally sit around blaming himself for things that aren't his fault, and the whole "stewing in guilt" genre of plots for him basically came down to "he was sad that he thought Bucky's death was his fault," and that's really the biggest regret he seems to have, and also Bucky's not dead anymore. The Steve/Tony relationship itself, I would think, is also appealing to h/c fans because canon provides a lot of ways for them to hurt each other. Some people only ship pairings who would never, y'know, take turns beating each other half to death in major event comics. (And for a lot of Marvel Comics history, that was also Steve & Tony, so if you want them to be BFFs who have never fought, you can just set your fic earlier.) They have definitely hurt each other both physically and emotionally, so if you're looking for something easy and satisfying as a h/c fan, you can just read or write something where they... make up. What about Marvel characters other than Steve and Tony? Surely some of them are angsty, yes? Well, yes, but also it depends on the particular flavor of angst that you like. If you like the way Tony hurts, you may very well enjoy Doctor Strange comics, because they have a very similar attitude towards life -- they are both former alcoholics whose origin stories involve physical disabilities, who routinely make tactical decisions that negatively affect their continued existence and/or happiness a whole lot. It's very much an "I must suffer alone in the dark and no one will ever know what I am doing to save the world but it's the right thing to do" sort of vibe. Like, you can read comics where Strange is lying in hell with two broken legs, hallucinating that Clea has finally come to save him. Strange's biggest fear, akin to Tony's control issues, is basically that one day he's going to be an asshole again, so he's out there trying as hard as he can to do good. Also, if you like tentacles, he has all of them. I mean that. Carol also occasionally hits similar angst spots, and her drinking arc is great. A lot of people like Natasha, too; I have read zero Black Widow comics but I get the impression many people enjoy her brand of angst. The mutant metaphor is a little different in terms of overall vibe, but some people really like it as a source of angst -- the whole "protecting a world who hates and fears them" thing. It may not work for you, but if you like your hurt to include things like systemic oppression, go pick up some X-Men comics. Start with something like God Loves Man Kills. I feel like I liked this sort of thing a lot more as a teenager but that I kind of aged out of liking the mutants quite so much. It's also worth mentioning that not everything that hits the spot in one universe will be the same in the others, and I'm mentioning this because I feel like I have to say something about MCU Bucky. MCU fandom seems to get a lot of mileage out of Bucky's guilt about being the Winter Soldier, everything he was forced to do, et cetera. I have definitely read my share of those fics, and FATWS sure went right for that angst too. But as far as I can tell, he doesn't hit the same way at all in 616. And I like him a lot in 616; I'm always pleased when he shows up on a team. (He was so good in Strikeforce. Everyone was so good in Strikeforce.) But the thing is, 616 Bucky is, basically, phenomenally well-adjusted, given everything he's gone through, and I'm including the time he wrestled a bear in a gulag. He gets over having been the Winter Soldier, and now he's just, y'know, a guy with a cool arm who likes to bring guns to every fight to horrify his teammates, and he snarks at Clint. If you're looking for that angst, that is really not him these days. He's all better. So pretty much all that is canon. So what do we do in fandom for h/c? Well, as far as I can tell, a decent amount of it is canon-based or very canon-close -- there are a whole lot of stories exploring the angst of Civil War or Hickman's Avengers run. Tony's drinking comes up a fair amount, and if one of Tony's Evil Exes comes back to haunt him, it's pretty much only Tiberius Stone. I don't think I've read a lot of fic with Steve getting deserumed; it doesn't seem as popular in fandom as in canon. When Steve gets hurt, he tends to just get physically whumped pretty hard, and there's a fair amount of that for Tony too, but of course Steve can take more. There's also a thriving, uh, subgenre of pain involving Hydra Steve doing terrible things to Tony, presumably the terrible things he would have wanted to do to Tony in canon if Tony had had a flesh body. There's the usual kinds of h/c setups that appear in basically every fandom as well -- sickfic, whump, dub-con/non-con. You get the idea. But since fandom in general likes to take specific inspiration from canon, there's a lot of fic where the hurt tends to resemble things that happen more in canon. Like, I feel like comics fic probably has more tentacle fic and more mind control than canons that don't come pre-stocked with those. Probably everybody has a whole lot of "tied up by bad guys," though. And then, of course, fandom brings the comfort that canon does not. This is true in pretty much every fandom -- I mean, you aren't going to find a lot of actual canons where Character A saves Character B from mortal peril and then there's gay sex -- but, like I was saying, comics don't provide a lot of closure before it's onto the next thing. Usually with a different creative team, who has no interest in wrapping up anything from the last team. Steve and Tony talked about the incursions exactly once after Secret Wars and nobody mentioned the part where Steve spent several months trying to hunt Tony down and kill him. Tony is never going to remember the events of Civil War. Hydra Steve died ignominiously in a fire and no one has ever talked about him again. Honestly, if you're looking for a way to get some comfort in your fanfic, picking an event, any event, and just having the characters talk about it will be way more than any of them get in canon. I feel like honestly that can often be a pretty satisfying to read. And even though comics canon physically hurts characters pretty often and pretty badly, they also often skip right past the recovery. Maybe you'll get one page of a character in a hospital bed at the end of the story arc. Maybe you won't. Demon in a Bottle has one splash page of Tony going through alcohol withdrawal and then he's all better. I think Manhunt skips to Tony getting out of the hospital at the end. That's just not a story that they want to tell very often. The second drinking arc is notable in that it devotes almost as many issues to Tony's recovery as it does to getting him to rock-bottom. Similarly, Steve is done with his Nomad angst way way faster than you probably think he is (though The Captain does go in for a fair number of issues). So one of the things we often want to do in fandom is focus on all the bits that canon skips over, both in the "why did no one ever mention this story arc ever again" way and the "wow, so how long are they in the hospital after that" way. That's really all I can think of about h/c! I'm off to write some more of it!

Summary: You reluctantly agree to letting your friends throw you a birthday party, but when they send an invite to your favorite Avenger, how will things pan out?

It is AU in the sense that I’m having Tony live through endgame, and obviously Steve didn’t go back in time. Because I can’t move on. I don’t own anything but the reader and her family and friends. And the cat.

(Also the house pictured is NOT MINE. I wish it was, but sadly no. Just used it for imagining the party venue. And the dress isn’t mine either, but I can see myself owning it before the house.)

Two days before your party

“I’m. Not. Going. Stark. ” Steve Roger’s tone had a sense of finality to it, his body in a tense stance as he crossed his arms over his chest, looking at the patriotic themed party invitation that Tony was holding. A huge grin plastered on the billionaire’s face.

“Yes. You. Are. Rogers.” The man adjusted his glasses as he brought the invitation to his line of sight. Steve had tried to conceal the bright blue and red card when he got it in his fan mail that morning, but of course Stark being the snoop that he naturally was, he found it and brought it to everyone’s attention later in the Tower. “Look it’ll be good to keep in the fan’s good graces. After everything that’s happened recently, we could use the good PR.”

The blonde man sighed deeply, running a hand through his hair. Everything that had happened with Thanos was over and done with, but yet the people were still terrified and on edge. Rightfully so too. He didn’t understand how going to some grown woman’s birthday celebration was going to help, especially when he had never met her. So he thought.

“Did you read the note that was attached? It’s quite cute. Ahem.” Steve rolled his eyes as Tony cleared his throat, developing a shrill feminine voice as he read it aloud to the rest of the room. “Dear Captain America. You don’t know us but our friend Y/N has a birthday coming up and we figured since you both share the same birthday it would be awesome if we invited you! We just got her back and wanted to make up for missing her these last five years. You’re her absolute favorite superhero and she’s totally had a crush on you ever since you saved her life during the Battle of New York. Not that she’ll ever tell you that. Anyways you don’t have to RSVP or anything, and you aren’t required to take pictures. Hell you could show up, say hi, and leave with cake for all we care. Hope to see you!

Stacy and Jim Higgins” The rest of the avengers were laughing at the annoyed blonde’s face when Stark finished.

“They even included a photo!” Bucky and Sam were the first to look at the picture the brunette man was holding, Sam letting out a long winded “Daaaaang” upon seeing the woman’s face. Steve had to admit that Y/N was very attractive, immediately noticing her thousand watt smile as she snuggled what he was assuming to be her pet cat.

“Tony I don’t want to do this..” Steve tried to reason with him, losing all hope when his friend typed the number on the invite into his phone, tossing the taller man the device and making a “go on” motion with his hands as it began to ring.

Rogers was beginning to think of all the ways he could get away with killing the asshole philanthropist when he heard a voice call from the other side of the line. “Hello?”

“Yes...uhm uh is this Stacy?”

“Who’s askin?”

“It’s Steve Rogers. I’m…uh.”

“OH MY GOD NO FUCKING WAY! JIM GUESS WHO’S ON THE HORN? CAPTAIN FUCKING AMERICA!!! No…No I’m not kidding you asshole.” Steve couldn’t help but give a nervous chuckle as the female voice proceeded to call the male voice a bunch of inappropriate names. He heard her take a deep breath and continue. “Sorry bout that Mister America Sir. To what do I owe the pleasure of your phone call?” He shook his head, smiling as the woman made an attempt to sound polite.

“I just wanted to RSVP for Y/N’s birthday party. Fourth of July right?”

“Yea! Five o’clock at the address on the invite! You can show up whenever though, oh man Y/N is going to FREAK OUT! Thank you so so much for doing this! I know you must be really busy. Dealing with everything going on around here.”

“It’s no problem at all…” Tony smacked the man’s arm as he grimaced, biting back a few choice words for his teammate. “I’m looking forward to it.” His comment sounded forced and fake but the woman only giggled, buying his terrible performance.

“Great! I won’t tell her you’re coming, but we can’t wait to see you! Have a good night!”

“Of course, you too.” Steve’s face was void of all emotion as he threw the phone at Tony head on, clearly trying to wipe the satisfied expression off his face.

“There that wasn’t so hard was it Rogers?”

“Go to hell Stark.” The blonde man muttered, the other raising a hand to his chest, feigning hurt feelings.

“Language Cap. You kiss your mother with that mouth? It’s not like I’m going to make you go alone. I want to see this train wreck first hand.” Mentally exhausted from today’s turn of events Steve didn’t even bother with a retort, walking out of the room to head to his bedroom. He was too old for this crap.

Day of Your Party

Lake George, New York

“No, No, I specifically told you Patty NO FIREWORKS! Y/N gets all jumpy and she’s bringing Tigger too…yes, her cat. YOU ARE NOT MESSING THIS UP FOR US PATRICIA! I WILL END YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY TREE WITH A TABLESPOON OF GASOLINE AND A MATCH! Do NOT try me today! Tell your mom I said hello. See you soon!”

Stacy ended the phone call with a huff, her eyes sweeping the large group of people that were attempting to set up last minute decorations for your birthday. Of course they would have it out at their astonishing lake side house in upper New York, away from the city and away from the seas of family reunions at Central Park. Considering the holiday, Stacy was hell bent on making sure no explosions of any kind would be happening today. She wanted everything to be perfect for you, and she wasn’t above murdering your cousin to obtain that goal. She didn’t care if she was only eleven years old.  

“You threatening children again honey?” Jim quirked an thick eyebrow at his wife, watching the woman deflate just an inch before she ran off to scream at someone for hanging the wrong colored lantern above one of the large tables. He was fairly certain his wife was going to have a stroke when all of this was over. He could hope anyway. She had been a nightmare planning this whole affair for you, and that was only because you had eventually given in to her demands. It was like negotiating with the government. And he had willing married her.

He laughed as she opted to forcefully take the lantern from his brother Tyler, dragging the chair to another table and hanging it up in its rightful spot. All it took though was one saucy wink in his direction and he could feel his body relax. She was going to be the death of him.

~~A short while later~~

“I hope there isn’t too many people Mel, you know I hate feeling crowded.” You pulled into the long driveway of your best friend’s home. Mel, your sister sat strangely quiet in the passenger seat, lovingly petting a sleeping Tigger in her lap. Before Thanos she was merely a teen, now a high school graduate and looking into medical school. Tigger was barely a year old and just starting to be harness trained, the orange tabby loving the outside and you didn’t have the heart to keep him inside all the time. Now older, he still loved being outside but had gotten pudgy in your years away. You had missed out on so much, but Mel was never this quiet before. In fact, she had pretty much been silent the entire four hour drive to Lake George, only saying a few words here and there as you rambled on. “Why are you being so damn quiet? It’s creeping me out.”

Your sister only smiled at you, her eyes misted over just a bit as she shook her head. “I’ve just missed hearing you talk sis. Five years…” A small sob escaped her when you threw your car into park, reaching over to pull her into a hug.

“Hey now, it was five years for me too alright? We’re together again yeah?” Brushing the tear off her cheek you held back your own when Tigger let out a cranky mewl. That was one thing you would never get tired of. A joyful laugh left your mouth as you began to break away from the embrace, looking into your sister’s brown eyes. “Alright get out of here before you make me ruin my makeup. And just so we’re clear I expect a full blown alien conspiracy lecture tomorrow on the way home.” You jokingly scolded, watching her light up before taking the cat and dashing out of the car. Well at least she had stayed the ball of energy you had remembered.

Stepping out of your vehicle before locking the doors, you couldn’t help but let out a gasp at the house in front of you.

“I see you guys finished the remodel!” You called out when you entered the foyer.

“Y/N! You look amazing!!” Stacy yelled, coming to give you the biggest hug as if you hadn’t been back for months now and she hadn’t just seen you a couple days ago. “Where did you get that banging dress? Did they have one in purple?!”

You lightly shoved your friend, looking down at your outfit for the day.

“HEY EVERYONE, Y/N’S HERE!” A large amount of screams were heard throughout the house and soon you were being flogged by tons of family and friends. Most of them you had seen since you got back, but all of them at once was kind of suffocating. You tried to hide your nerves as you greeted the seemingly endless crowd of smiling, teary faces.

“Happy birthday Y/N!”

“You look great!”

“You got a boyfriend yet?”

“How’s work?” Holding your temple, you started to struggle to breathe, overwhelmed by all of the questions and closeness. A knock at the door seemed to stop everyone in their tracks, and you smiled gratefully as Stacy swooped in to shoo them all away.

“Let our girl breathe a little! Fuck! Buncha vultures.” Your brunette friend whispered the last part, you giggling as she led you away from the prying eyes and invasive questions. It had been nearly a year since you had come back, it wasn’t as if it was just yesterday or anything. Taking a seat on the back porch, you gladly took the mojito Jim handed to you while Stacy went to get the door, opening it widely and immediately looking confused.

“You…you aren’t Captain America.” She managed to get out as Tony Stark took off his sunglasses, reaching to take her hand and giving her a grand smile.

“Well spotted. I’m not. Tony Stark. I however, was under the assumption he was already here. “

“He’s not with you?” Your friend asked as he went to dart his eyes to his phone, a frown on his features as he went to call the avenger in question, holding a finger up to Stacy.

“He didn’t want to carpool and save the environment. He insisted he took his bike. Maybe he took a wrong turn at Albuquerque. Excuse me.” That was a blatant lie, as Tony had told Steve specifically to take his bike and offer Y/N a ride as an attempt to break the ice. Perhaps the good captain was in fact lost. He listened as the phone rang, clucking his tongue in disapproval as it went to voicemail.

“Sorry Stac, looks like you just have me for right now. I’m more than positive he’ll be here soon. I know he wouldn’t miss something like this. He loves birthday cake, as do I. But you know war heroes, always fashionably late. Shall we?” Your friend could only nod slowly, the information sinking in and Stark taking his cue to head into the large home. “Your home is stunning.”

“Thanks. Y/N should be out back.” Stacy waved him on and Tony took his time enjoying the lovely large windows and high ceilings. He also took the time to send a very strongly worded text message to Steve about punctuality, and the fact he should have beaten Stark here considering Rogers had left nearly two hours before he had.

It didn’t take him long to find you, halfway through your glass and staring out onto the massive backyard. People were playing volley ball, four or five men were manning the grill, women laughing in groups as they caught up. Even surrounded by everyone you still felt a little isolated. Not a soul paying attention to you. Noticing you were almost out of alcohol he backtracked into the house, grabbing a couple fresh minty drinks and heading back out.

“Y/N I presume?” Tony’s voice shook you out of your daydreaming, you jumping at recognizing his face. Iron Man Tony-fucking-Stark was standing just to your right, and you placed a hand over your chest in a poor attempt to steady your heart beat.

“Uhmnh…Yea….Yea that’s me.” You choked out, taking the billionaire’s drink offering and setting it down before coming back up to grasp his hand and giving it a firm shake. “I’m Y/N.”

“You sure?” His jab made you blush, you finishing your first drink before moving your steel straw into the next one. The brunette man smiled, sipping on his own drink and nodding at it in approval.

“What…what are you doing here?” Your question was blurted out at a rapid speed, the skin on your neck tingling again as Tony looked down to meet your eyes. You could tell that he had been waiting on you to ask, as it wasn’t everyday random world saving superheroes showed up to a woman’s birthday party.

“We got an invite from Stacy and her husband, but superhero business would have it that only I could make it tonight. I’m sorry if you were expecting someone taller. With blonde hair and devastating blue eyes.” You sputtered into your glass, giving Tony an incredulous look while he laughed at you. What had your friends mentioned in that invitation?

“No um, this is really wonderful. Thank..thank you for coming.” You nearly squeaked, trying to guzzle down the rest of your drink and standing from your chair. Jim signaled it was time to eat, Stacy starting to hand people red, white, and blue plates and napkins while the masses began to form a line for food. “I guess that’s our cue. Everyone will be really excited to meet you. And in case I don’t get the chance, thank you. Ya know, for saving the world.”

“All in a day’s work Y/N. Let’s get some grub, I’m starving.” You laughed as Tony extended his arm, helping you down the stairs into the party space, people offering him thanks and asking for pictures once they caught on to who he was. “No no, I’m just here for the free food and Y/N’s birthday cake. But maybe we’ll take a few photos after yeah?”

The two of you took a seat at the large long picnic table after piling your plates with ribs, potato salad, corn on the cob, and other fourth of July staples. Tony kept everyone laughing, telling stories to you and the twenty four other people that were there to celebrate. You secretly wished that you could be this outgoing, most of the time shying away from social interaction and people altogether. It would certainly help you and your lackluster personal life.

After everyone was on the brink of a food coma, Tony suggested the game of charades to help burn off some of the food to make room for cake. With it being after seven, some of the guests opted to leave for the evening, wishing you well and stealing a couple of photos with Tony before exiting. None of them seemed to notice the motorcycle parked alongside the driveway.

Steve’s eyes watched with amusement as you attempted to use your cat to imitate a machine gun, shouting Scarface quotes and Tony being the first to answer correctly. His breath was taken away by how beautiful you were in person, the picture being five years older after all. He loved the way your eyes crinkled when you laughed, and how your smiles always looked warm and inviting, even when you were clearly not doing the best at charades. Steeling his nerve he climbed off his bike, wiping his suddenly sweaty palms onto his pants and heading up to the front door of the large home. He took in a deep breath and knocked, staring into the rich oak and waiting.

“I’ll get it!” You shouted, hopping off the couch and dodging popcorn Mel was throwing at you along the way. You stuck your tongue out playfully, turning to open the door and finding yourself face to face with freedom in the flesh.

“Happy birthday Y/N.” His stunning blue eyes and even more attractive smile was too much for you and the room began to spin. “I’m Steve.”

You took his hand, suddenly feeling really light headed. His expression changed to one of concern as you took a few fumbling steps back, his strong arm instinctively reaching out to grip your waist and steady you.

“Hey you’re alright. I’ve got you.” His words had your brain going into overdrive, your mind flooding with the memory of the only other time you had heard him say that.

~May 4th, 2012~

“Why the hell should I take orders from you?!”

You heard the cop ask the man in the blue suit, you hiding behind a nearby car as you watched him interact with the officer, chaos erupting throughout the city. The entire office you worked in had evacuated in a panic, but you were one of the last ones to leave, narrowly escaping death a few times over just getting out of the building. Your eyes were glued to the man, never seeing him before in your life. He was extremely handsome from what you could tell, and clearly he wasn’t taking no for an answer. You watched as he proceeded to defeat a few of the strange creatures easily, and you couldn’t help but let out a raspy laugh as the officer quickly changed his tune.

“I need men in those buildings. Lead the people down and away from the streets. We’re gonna set up a perimeter all the way down to 39th street.” He had said the last bit into his radio, walking away and you gladly decided it was time to get your ass out of there. Standing up and headed towards the street you began running towards the nearest subway entrance. Your heart was hammering in your throat and you were sure you would have to throw out your heels and now ripped to hell dress when this was over. Turning a corner you let out a blood curdling scream as a truck came barreling through the air, you being directly in its way.

You shut your eyes and awaited death, but it never came. Instead you were grabbed roughly and tucked in between a set of buildings, a shriek leaving your lungs as you watched the truck go flying by. Your hands shot to cover your face as your panicked sobs came out before you could stop them, realizing you were alive.

“Hey you’re alright, I’ve got you.” Your hands were brought down from your face and you looked up to see the hero in blue staring intently at you, brushing some of your now loosened hair away from your face. You were certain your makeup was smeared along with dirt and dust from all of the debris floating around the city, but he only continued staring into your eyes.

“Boy do you ever.” Was all you could get out, a small smile lighting up the mystery man’s features as he grabbed your hand, looking into the street before nodding to you.

“Good. Now let’s get you to safety Doll.” You swooned and fought to keep up with the man as he started jogging back into the street, careful to help you dodge and duck the ugly looking creatures along the way. Stopping at the subway entrance he gave you a once over, making sure you weren’t bleeding as you fought a heart attack from all the cardio today had put you through. His hands on your shoulders weren’t helping things.

“You get down there and you stay safe alright miss?” You could only nod like an moron again, watching him turn to walk away.

“Hey wait!” He turned around at your newly found voice, you pointing to an alley that wasn’t under attack. “You’ll get to where you’re going faster if you take that way. It’ll lead you back to where you saved me.”

He cracked a smile, appreciating your kindness as he took off. You got all the way down the stairs before realizing you never got to thank him. Or learn his stupid name.

~Now~

“Boy do you ever.” Your words came out in a whisper, his gaze turning to one of calculation as you smiled. There was no way he could have remembered saving you. He has saved thousands, millions of people in the past, and you weren’t that memorable.

“You…you were the woman I saved from the flying truck..weren’t you?” His voice was soft as he whispered back. You nodded with wide eyes, taking note how his arm hadn’t detached itself from your waist yet. Not that you minded.

“You remember me?” You stuttered out, trying to keep your shocked nerves at bay.

“Doll I couldn’t forget you even if I tried. Those directions saved my skin that day. I’m glad to see you survived.”

“Because of you! I didn’t even know trucks could fly.” Your comment made him laugh out loud, his arm leaving your waist only to cover his stomach as he filled the house up with joy. Everyone else laughed nervously, clearly not having heard the conversation between you two and therefore not having the slightest idea what was so funny.

“I see you cut your hair, your picture doesn’t do you justice you know.”His normal voice and remark set your face on fire, you whipping your head to look at your best friend, who only sheepishly shrugged and avoided making eye contact with you. “But I like it. Suits you.” Receiving another compliment from the blonde had you grinning like a goofball.

“Thank you….and uh thanks, for saving my life all of those years ago. I never got the chance to do it back then.” You rambled, before widening your eyes again and taking a breath. “And thanks for helping bring back everyone from the decimation too! I mean I was part of that and I know everyone is really grateful and all.” Finishing your long winded spiel you began studying the designs in the hard cherry wood floor, embarrassed at how the Captain only continued to chuckle at you.

“You’re welcome…and you’re welcome.” He beamed at you, Tony loudly coughing to bring the two of you out of whatever bubble you seemed to be in together.

“This is ADORABLE to watch. Seriously. But uh, I was promised cake and I’m not leaving until I get some.” Stark whined, your friends all agreeing before wandering into the kitchen, you motioning for Steve to follow. Stacy smiled warmly at you as she took the glad cake topper off, your mouth watering at the beautiful cake she had made. It was three layers, all different swirls of red white and blue adorning it along with simple gold stars.

“Oh Stac…it’s perfect. Thank you.”

“Hey that means we can sing happy birthday to both of you!” Jim clapped Steve on the back, shaking his hand as he went to light the one huge candle that sat on top of the cake.

“As long as you don’t sing Jim I think our ears will be okay.” Mel quipped, everyone laughing as they began singing to the two of you. Your eyes welled up with tears, looking at all of the faces of people you honestly weren’t sure you’d ever see again. And two of the people that helped make that happen were here as well. How about that. Once everyone had a piece of cake you all took to sitting outside on the back porch again, watching the summer sun begin to set off in the distance. It reflected off the lake beautifully, the reds and oranges in the sky extending over the water.

“I’ve missed how peaceful it is out here Stacy. You and Jim have an absolute paradise out here.” Your friends nodded, both too busy with cake to really take in the splendor.

“I think this cake is paradise.” Tony muffled out, mouth full of the sugary treat, Steve’s shaking of his head had you and Mel giggling into your forks. “You have to get me the recipe so my wife can make it. Or we can just pay you to make it.”

“Anything for one of the guys who saved the world. I’ll write it down for ya.” Stacy’s smirk made you chuckle, her fingers snaking out to take your clean plate from you. Walking back into the kitchen, the now very happy Stark following her, Mel sighed as she looked at her watch.

“It’s not even ten yet! What are we going to do!?” Her complaint reminded you how much younger she actually was, you perfectly fine with calling it a night. Your ears perked up at the sound of soft jazz music beginning to pour out of the speakers located on the corner of the deck, Jim turning on the assortment of lanterns. The whole back yard was aglow with twinkling lights and you started to subconsciously sway to the beat. Steve’s jaw working as he began to walk over to you, shrugging out of the brown leather jacket he had been wearing and setting on a chair.

“Well I know what Y/N and I are going to do.” Steve stuck his hand out to you, you smiling timidly before reaching yours to grasp his. “Care to dance, Doll?”

“Well I’m not going to say no.” He laughed at that, bringing you over to the side of the deck that was serving as a makeshift dance floor, Jim and Stacy following your lead when she returned from the kitchen. You got a chance to take in his outfit, nice gray slacks and a simple blue button up shirt rolled up at the elbows. It wasn’t much but he didn’t need much when he looked like he had been carved out of marble by Michelangelo himself.

“I have to admit, I don’t have that much practice with dancing.” The blonde admitted, your heart fluttering as a flush crept over his face. You squeezed his hand reassuringly as he dropped his other one to sit on high on your waist.

“Is the great Captain America flustered right now?” You giggled, allowing him to spin you around. “Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me. But for the record…” You gingerly took his hand at your waist, lowering it a little to where it sat just above your hip. “Your hand will be a lot more comfortable here. And you should relax some. I don’t bite.”

He swallowed thickly and nodded, you both swaying to the music in a comfortable silence as it played on, Jim making sure the songs stayed slow so you wouldn’t part ways so quickly. Eventually you began making small talk, asking him about his life and interests, Steve obviously very interested in what you had been up to since Thanos’ defeat. You found him extremely easy to talk to, your jokes making him laugh, his eyes crinkling with joy as the time passed.

“So we might as well start making wedding invitations now.” Mel uttered to Tony when he curiously eyed the Captain, your sister and Stark looking to each other before chuckling. “She’s not going to let him go now that they’ve met officially.”

“That’s funny, because I was thinking the same thing. About him. Maybe he’ll find that life I told him to get.” Mel laughed at the brunette, both of them nodding to the other couple to vacate the dance floor. Stacy couldn’t help the sly smile as you and Steve continued to talk, so enamored in each other you didn’t notice everyone else leaving the back yard to give you some privacy. Ten minutes later the next song came to a close, Steve attempting to lower you into a small dip that made your knees weak in more ways than one.

“Thanks for the dance Y/N.”

“Dances Mister Rogers, and back at you. They were lovely. Now where did everyone…. “ You began to look around, a slight familiar panic setting in as your eyes searched for your friends and the billionaire. You sighed in exasperation as you watched them scatter. Failing miserably at making themselves look busy and like they hadn’t been watching you two. “Go.”

“I’m sure they mean well.” Steve’s eyes sparkled as you rolled your own.

“Sure yea. They’re probably in there planning our first date.”

“Our first date?” You went to cover your face with your hands, a high pitch squeak coming out when you came to terms with the fact you had said that out loud.

“OhmygodI’msososorry” You rushed out, continuing to hide your face as you were certain you were the brightest shade of red in the rainbow.

“Y/N it’s alright…”

“No it’s not. You’re out there saving the world, and I’m sure that coming to this dumb party my exhausting friends probably blackmailed you into was the last thing on your to do list. And then I have to go and ruin a perfectly nice moment by opening my big mouth and asking you out when knowing my luck you’re already dating some stunning Amazonian woman who can cook and makes you stupid happy!” Anger boiled in your veins as the blonde could only stare at you, partially concerned you might combust, and partially endeared that you clearly had a big crush on him.

“For the record, Tony made me come tonight. But you’re the sole reason I’ve stayed.” Steve took your clenched hand, giving it a soft squeeze and the noise that died in the back of your throat couldn’t have been remotely human. “And secondly, I’m single, and extremely flattered. But I’m afraid there’s a small problem.”

“You’re afraid I’m crazy and will probably burn down your house if you ignore me for too long?” He blinked at you, taking a moment to let that sentence sink in before shaking his head.

“No, I don’t know if you’re a cup of coffee or dinner and a movie kind of girl. “ His grin had you seeing fireworks and holy star spangled banner Steve Rogers was asking you out! Quickly jolting out of your over-excitement you managed a coy giggle, you removing your hand from his before placing it on his right cheek. Bringing yourself up to your tiptoes you allowed your lips to lightly kiss his left cheek, feeling the warmth radiate through his skin upon contact.

“Well in your case Steve, I’m both. Dinner tomorrow night when I get back into town?”

His eyes didn’t leave yours, you sliding your hand away only to have him take it again. Your heart raced as he placed a chaste kiss on your knuckle, grinning at you like a love struck puppy.

“I’ll pick you up on the bike at seven o clock. Hope you like Italian.”

“I do.” You nodded, you immediately missing his hand when he let it go.

“Great, then it’s a date.”

“So it is.” You bit back a girlish scream internally as he began to walk away, before turning around and bashfully asking for your phone number. You typed it into his phone, laughing the entire time. Everyone gathered outside for a quick photo with the two Avengers, Steve staying right next to you, a hand on your waist and the two of you looking nothing short of smitten with each other. You gave both of them a quick hug goodbye, Tony’s being longer because he complained about you not dancing with him at all and he deserved better treatment because he was there first.

“Goodnight Y/N. Happy Birthday.” You smiled at the blonde, giggling as Tony had to physically grab the back of Steve’s jacket to pull him out of the doorway.

“Happy birthday Steve. See you tomorrow.” You waved them on, leaning against the frame as the two men became shapes in the dark. It wasn’t long after you heard the rumble of a motorcycle and a car start up, headlights pulling down the road as they drove off.

“I’m sorry they had to go.” Mel patted your shoulder as you shut the door, locking the bolt and turning off the porch light. You smiled at your sister saucily, throwing her a wink after she shut the blinds behind the couch.

“Me too, but god did I love watching him leave.”

Her response was a pillow. To your face.

Quiet Life Chapter 7

Quiet Life Masterlist

It had taken almost a full month to convince both Steve and Bucky to go clothes shopping. Steve had a habit of only buying shirts two sizes too small and Bucky still dressed like he was in a Romanian winter. It took everything from bargaining to threats of bodily harm to get them in the car. Not that your threats could do any harm, it was like a kitten hissing at a lion. Finally, you managed to wrangle both the super soldiers to the mall, but cooperation wasn’t your only problem. As it turned out Steve was much harder to shop for than you anticipated.

“Goddammit, Steve, everything that fits in the shoulders doesn’t fit in the waist,” you groaned as he came out in another shirt that didn’t fit properly. Bucky had been easy. You had found a few pairs of jeans he liked along with some slacks that looked nice but still allowed him to move easily. He had also picked up a few shirts ranging from soft tees to the bulkier Henleys he preferred. He had taken to the t-shirts better than you had anticipated. You suspected it had something to do with the texture. Steve, on the other hand, did fine with pants but shirts were proving to be difficult.

 “Your shoulder to waist ratio isn’t natural,” you muttered sitting on the floor outside the men’s dressing room.

 “Nothing about him is natural,” Bucky answered. For 20 minutes he tried on shirts, none of them fit properly. You had given up waiting on Steve instead choosing to wander around the store. You came back a few minutes later with Steve holding a folded pile of shirts. 

“What the fuck is that?” Bucky asked from his spot on the floor. He had replaced you sitting outside the men’s dressing room. He was fiddling with his phone playing some kind of game, probably Tetris. That had quickly become one of his favorites.  It had been an impulse decision to grab the motorized scooter. Technically, your friends were 100 years old. If anyone was entitled to a little help, it was them. Bucky looked at you confused and Steve was much more used to your antics he didn’t question you anymore. 

“It’s for old people,” you explained, “or I guess it could be for injured people, but mostly old people and you guys count.” You climbed off the scooter and offered it to the boys. 

“You can’t be serious,” Steve began, but Bucky came up anyway despite Steve rolling his eyes. At least someone would have some fun with you. 

Out of the two, Bucky tended to be the more curious. You introduced him to the Science channel and it was like watching a kid on Christmas morning. Both you and Steve had fallen asleep with Bucky mesmerized by How It’s Made. It had gotten to the point where he had taken apart your toaster 3 times. You didn’t mind as long as it still worked when he put it back together and it didn’t electrocute you in the process. 

Bucky climbed into the seat and fiddled with the controls until he got the hang of maneuvering around. 

“This is fun,” he spun around and turned the scooter to face Steve. “Want a ride?” he asked and Steve just rolled his eyes at Bucky. You circled around and climbed on the back of the scooter. 

“To the checkout!” You ordered as Bucky surged ahead leaving Steve to follow behind. Checking out didn’t take long. The sales girl had been in a bit of a tizzy from Steve. Both you and Bucky stood back and let him handle the process. Bucky sat quietly on the scooter away from the counter, almost hiding. He still didn’t like being in public despite you and Steve slowly getting him to come out with you both on occasion. It was slow, but it was progress. 

Steve was calm and collected while the girl struggled to keep herself together. Steve handled his fame gracefully, an aspect you admired in him every time you found yourself out in public with him. Sure, sometimes it was annoying, but it could also be endearing. Your favorite interactions were always when kids recognized him. He never brushed kids away or treated them like pests. Steve knew they were looking up to him, he was their hero and he didn’t want to let them down. He never cared what the politicians said, but the kids, they were the future heroes.  

The Steve handled the bags while you and Bucky followed along on the scooter. You were encouraging Bucky to catch up to Steve’s whose walk was annoyingly fast. 

“Can you two act like the adults you are?” Steve asked. He should’ve known better, but he tried anyway. 

“Steve, really?” you asked grinning at him. All you received was an eye roll, but it was worth it. 

“I knew it, I knew you were an old man,” a voice called from behind you all. 

Both you and Steve turned around, but only Steve recognized the voice. He cracked an amused grin. Bucky didn’t even bother. 

“No one cares, bird brain,” Bucky responded grumpily. You hopped off the slow-moving scooter as Bucky brought it to a stop. He spun it around looking no less grumpy than he sounded. It was hard to see but there was still a small amount of playfulness in his eyes.  It was similar to the looks he gave you when you threw popcorn at his head when he wouldn’t stop talking during a movie. 

“Can I get a picture?” the man asked with a grin. 

“Sam…” Steve started employing the Dad voice and usual stance. 

“Oh, so you’re Sam!” You reached your hand out for him to shake. “I’ve heard a lot about you, Falcon right?”

“And I’ve heard absolutely nothing about you,” Sam returned. You thought he he might attempt to flirt, from stories he seemed the type. But you caught Steve giving him a hard look. It probably should've bothered you, but for some reason it didn’t. There was a silent conversation between the two that ended with Sam giving Steve a small nod. 

“She’s where she’s safe,” Steve answered. 

“Well, you should bring her around, if she can handle us. If she can keep up with you two, she can keep up with the rest of us,” Sam proposed. Meeting Bucky was one thing, but you weren’t sure if you were ready for the rest of the Avengers. It was overwhelming to even think about. Of course, eventually, you wanted to meet everyone. You just weren’t quite ready. 

“We’ll work up to that,” Steve said, picking up on your hesitation. Sam nodded and you relaxed a bit unconsciously moving closer to Steve. 

“Whenever the party is, I wanna be there,” Sam gave you a warm smile. “And I’ll be sure to pick up you a walker, grandpa”

Thanks for answering!! I loooove Peter and John and Emori and well most characters on your list really! While we're at it, which characters are your least favorite in MCU/the100? And which characters do you think are overrated or underrated?

Hey, awesome! And no problem! I love talking about the characters I like. You can come talk to me about them anytime! Or even characters you like that I don’t pay enough attention to.

Okay, this was a GREAT question, and I basically wrote you a novel in response.

The 100 – Clarke Griffin (if that wasn’t already obvious)

I used to love Clarke Griffin, but at this point, I just get annoyed whenever she comes on my screen. Clarke was a much stronger character in s2, when the writing committed to portraying her as flawed and morally grey and kind of ruthless in a way that was necessarily but also kind of concerning.

Now it seems like they always want to remind me she’s The Most Important – she’s almost become a version of the Chosen One trope in a narrative where that really shouldn’t be a thing – and a hero and just, like, suuuper pretty (the staircase scene was ridiculous). They’ve made her The Popular, Pretty Girl trope and I hate it. They might tell me in dialogue over and over again that there are no bad guys, but even when Clarke does bad, selfish things, they refuse to commit to it. She doesn’t face consequences and the writing is too concerned with making us side with her than actually calling her out. Even this season while other characters have been listing why they’re angry with her, everything is framed in a way to make us sympathize with her.

Letting a character do flawed things but trying to sway the viewer to ignore those flaws and loudly tell me that they’re still a good person rather than showing it is the easiest way to get me to not like a character. They’ve written Clarke as incredibly selfish, arrogant, and unwilling to listen to anyone else, unwilling to truly apologize or learn from her mistakes – but they just won’t admit to it or let her grow. OR commit to an actual downward spiral arc. Either would be accepted.

Plus, she’s just boring now. Everything comes too easily for her – people she’s hurt forgive her too easily, and the nightblood is basically a superpower at this point. The writing of her is just lazy and it’s not compelling.

MCU – Steve Rogers

I also used to like Steve. Whedon’s characterization was always off (and I think AoU really contributed to the problems in his overall arc), but I liked him a lot in Cap 1 and Winter Soldier is still one of my favorite MCU movies and the best handling of his character overall.

I need to rewatch the MCU before I really dive into just what went wrong with Steve’s character, but I just never really found him as compelling a character past WS and I was mad at him more than I liked or sided with him. Even with Endgame, I was just indifferent to how his story ended.

I think he suffers from a lot of the same problems as the writing for Clarke does. Steve has flaws and that’s great – it makes him interesting and human – but even while the narrative shows you his flaws, it tries to push you to ultimately ignore them because he’s a hero and we’re supposed to side with him because they already established he’s a good man. The problem is that Steve’s flaws ultimately get shown a lot more than his heroic, moral side as the movies go on. And despite not showing us that heroic side, they keep loudly telling us over and over again that Steve still is a selfless hero who will lay down on the wire – something he actually hasn’t shown he will do (for anyone but Bucky, maybe) for several movies now. In fact, he’s the only one in Endgame who really doesn’t do “whatever it takes” or have to sacrifice ANYTHING.

What @gamorazenwhoberis says in this post really explains it better than I am right now.

In short, starting with AoU (the root of so many characterization issues in the MCU), the writing starts telling us that Steve’s a selfless hero and a shining example of a good man while only really showing us his flawed behavior. It’s hard to keep buying that Steve is the “lay down on the wire” type when he doesn’t do anything to prove it. I also really struggle to side with him in later movies because I find him, in the wise words of Rhodey, “dangerously arrogant.” Steve’s intentions are always good, but he never believes he can be wrong, and that’s a problem. And again, that could be a really interesting character flaw if portrayed as a flaw – but I think too often the narrative ultimately expects us to side with him because…I don’t know, he’s Captain America, you know?  

It’s not necessarily Steve’s fault, because I think he IS meant to be portrayed as an ultimately heroic man who wants to help people but still has realistic human flaws – it’s the writing’s fault, because they way they end up framing it makes it look like Steve is all talk when it comes to heroic sacrifices but, unlike his fellow Avengers, unwilling to sacrifice or compromise.  

Also, I’ll be honest - I relate so much with Tony and project so much onto him that a lot of his actions in Civil War felt like a personal betrayal and I had a hard time liking him again after that movie. I still like him just fine in the first few films and I actually did enjoy a lot of scenes in Endgame, but a lot of his actions bother me and never feel like they’re actually addressed in a way that calls him out and the writing of him REALLY bothers. And when I’m not mad it him in later movies, I’m mostly indifferent. I do love him in other universes though.

Underrated

1. JAMES RHODEY RHODES DOES NOT GET ENOUGH APPRECIATION!!! He’s fantastic and I love him and I really wish he was given a bit more room to shine in IW/Endgame, even though I get they’re juggling too many characters. They just handled him SO WELL in Civil War that I wanted to see more writing that showed how much conviction and sense of duty he had. Also the brief moment where he talked about being paralyzed and how they have to “work with what they’ve got” was so good, I wanted so much more of it.

2. Maria Hill! The writing has really wronged her. I didn’t like her writing in Age of Ultron at all (she’s not a secretary, Whedon), and she’s been such an afterthought in the MCU since then. I’m so excited to see her come back in FFH, because I think there’s still so much cool stuff they could do with her. I’d actually love them to write her with a bit more 616 characterization, because in comics she’s kind of both The Worst and The Best all at once. She’s just MEAN. But she also helps run a massive intelligence agency with an iron fist and has a strong sense of duty and right and wrong and she’s more than a little terrifying. She’s just great. I’m glad to see her back. I love that she’s still been doing her part to help protect the world even with SHIELD gone.

3. NEBULA!!! She has such a good arc and she was wonderful in Endgame and this whole fandom sleeps on her and it’s unacceptable.

Overrated

1. Wanda Maximoff. :/ I really, really WANT to like MCU Wanda, and Elizabeth Olson does an amazing job with what she’s given, but her character bothers me a lot. I like the concept of her arc going from villain to hero. She’s really similar to Nebula in that way – her turn to villainy was born from trauma, but over time she learned to repurpose that trauma into a way to help other people.

The problem is that….it just kind of doesn’t work for me. Part of it is that she also suffers from the Clarke Griffin Problem – aka, she’s flawed and she makes mistakes and the dialogue tells me this, but she either avoids consequences or she fails to apologize for them. In theory, I like her arc about mistakes and atonement and doing better (which is exactly why I love Tony and Natasha and Nebula), but the writing of it doesn’t work for me. And her relationship with Vision is just so boring it’s hard to be invested. I think they did such a disservice to her by killing off her most interesting relationship, even though I know it was for legal reasons. (I do like her relationship with Clint, though.)

2. Carol Danvers. :( Again, I WANT to like her so badly. I love comics Carol so much. I bought a Captain Marvel shirt for the premiere. I have a Captain Marvel coffee mug. I’ve been looking forward to her movie for YEARS.

But I just find MCU Carol incredibly bland. There isn’t much depth to her even after her own solo movie, and I think Captain Marvel did a terrible job of developing her – especially in comparison to how well other MCU heroes have been developed in their own solo films. She has a lot of surface-level qualities that are fun – like being headstrong and snarky and a badass (I AM delighted that there’s no question she is the strongest hero) – but there just isn’t much emotional depth to flesh her out. I still feel like all I really know about her are basic facts and not anything about what she believes in or feels, and I feel like I was more emotionally connected with Maria in one scene than I ever was with Carol. I’m really hoping her next movie fixes that problem for me because I want to love her.

Thanks for asking!! I’m not kidding. You can always come yell at me about fictional characters. :)

Avengers: Endgame (2019) -  Review - Spoilers Ahead

Later edit: I saw the movie again and Thanos says he destroyed the stones using the stones. First things first: Imma put a ”keep reading” below just in case someone stumbles upon this review and hasn’t seen the movie yet. 

I was gonna wait until I saw it a second time, as I did with Infinity War, but because I am sick with a cold and low on money I am just gonna gather all my opinions and feelings about the movie and just get it over with. 

Off the bat I have to say that I have been looking forward to this movie for a year (everyone has been), and while the constant news about it started to become quite annoying the hype was still there. So, naturally I went to see it as soon as it premiered in my country. 

If i were to compare this to Infinity War, which, again, most people do, I’d say that Infinity War is more consistent when it comes to its plot and the rules it establishes or has established before in other MCU movies. BUT Endgame just feels like it has more stakes, that it is not as predictable as the first one. I mean, come on, we all knew part of our heroes were gonna be dusted and we knew they were gonna come back because it happens in the comics as well. Obviously they wouldn’t have killed a big character in IW because they needed them for Endgame. As such we were left with the OG Avengers plus a couple of other supporting cast members.  I feel as if even though Endgame was, in part predictable, its stakes were higher. We knew they’d find a way to reverse the snap we just didn’t know how. We speculated it would be time travel months ago but again we weren’t sure how that’d go. 

And while I appreciate that they tried to establish some rules prior to the time travel I feel that as soon as it was convenient they threw them out the window, more or less.  More on that later. 

What I liked about this movie?

I confess: I wanted the movie to start with this scene above. No music, no nothing just this scene that we also saw in the trailer. It just conveys so well how Infinity War ended, how our heroes feel. It’s tragic, no shred of hope. And yeah the trailers spoiled it because they also showed Tony back on Earth ( which I hated) it still would’ve been nice to start with this but I admit the scene with Clint and his family was heartbreaking but not surprising. 

Ok so what did I like in Endgame?

Cap’s determination to move forward, his willingness to help others do so and adapt to the new world post snap. it really shows the core qualities of Cap and why Steve is truly worthy to be Cap. 

I really liked Ant Man, Paul Rudd is just a delight to watch. I loved all of his reactions and I feel like he mirrored the audience pretty well. I mean he is a hero in his own right yet he is still an outsider reacting to everything around him and to the other more well known characters. 

The way the movie brought many things full-circle, it was like an ongoing thing. Staring with Thor killing Thanos and saying that this time he aimed for the head to Tony ending 11 years of MCU with the same line that he started it. 

Black Widow - she is not really one of my favourites. There’s nothing wrong with her it’s just I couldn’t invest in her as a character, but that’s a me problem not a problem with the character as is. But in this movie Black Widow was amazing and not because of the sacrifice she made but because she endured and basically took on Nick Fury’s mantle, so to speak, and tried to guide everyone and be that shinning light at the end of a very dark tunnel. Also, her friendship with Clint is amazing and I love that throughout all of the MCU the writers did not feel compelled to make them have a romantic relationship. There are other types of relationships in this world and I am glad Marvel understands that and showed us how beautiful her and Clint’s relationship is and how she supports him and loves him and vice versa. 

Everything with Rocket is amazing because he is amazing. 

I liked how they used time travel to give a nod to a lot of Marvel Movies, kinda paying homage to what was before while at the same time showing where we are now and how far our characters have evolved since this whole MCU started. It was beautifully done. And yes Tony talking to his father was nothing out of the ordinary, in terms of dialogue, the moment was heartfelt and it really caught me off guard. Steve seeing Peggy was a nice touch too even though we know it was there to kind of explain the ending but more on that later. 

Clint being badass. He is one of my favourite MCU characters.

The fact that Thor had a panic attack and pretty much got depressed after the events of Infinity War. I know many consider his character development that he got during Ragnarok was ruined, but I think what happened to him was a normal response. Think about it: Thor was the closest to killing Thanos, and because he aimed for the chest Thanos snapped his fingers. It was a matter of seconds. Thanos even teases him about it in IW. ANYONE in Thor’s shoes would feel like crap, like a failure because to him it feels like the faith of everyone who got dusted was in his hands and he was sloppy and missed and so because of him half of everyone on the planet disappeared. It didn’t matter that it was a team effort to try to bring Thanos down. The fact that in the last seconds before the snap it was just Thor and Thanos looking at each other with the latter teasing the former about not aiming right was enough for Thor to send him into depression. We could still see that it is the same Thor from Ragnarok but Thor lost so much and bottled up so many emotions that it was only natural that he’đ either have a full outburst of anger, wich he did in Infinity War or go into depression, which he also did in Endgame. So, yeah, in my opinion Thor was written pretty good. Ok, the fat jokes were kinda on the nose, but it did give us one of the best jokes in the movie when Tony called him Lebowski.

The final battle was freaking amazing even though I wanted Doctor Strange to have more screen time, but I guess he had his time in IW. Yet the moment he raised his finger and looked at Tony to let him know that was the one chance where they win was heartbreaking and utterly beautiful. Like this is it no screwing up. Now or never. 

CAPTAIN AMERICA WIELDING FREAKING MJOLNIR!

What I didn’t like or had doubts about: 

When Thanos mentioned that he destroyed the Infinity stones he said that they were basically atoms at the point when the Avengers came to fight him about it on the farm planet. If I remember correctly 2 or 3 days passed between the snap and them going on the farm planet after Thanos so I really wanted the avengers to try and have Scott go into the quantum realm to have him reassemble the stones at an atom level. It would have been harder, sure, but it was an option. wasn’t it?I guess it could have taken longer. 

I think it was already established in prior movies that the Gauntlet was the only item that could hold the infinity stones and harness their power. To me it was a bit off how Tony was able to make his own gauntlet, just because. It would have been a little bit better if they used the original gauntlet. It was still cool to see yet it took me out of the moment for a split second. 

Steve’s ending. Thematically I don’t think it works. Now, don’t get me wrong I want Steve to be happy but we’ve spend so many movies establishing that Steve was, at least, partially ok with the fact that he couldn’t go back to his own time. Sure he hold on to Peggy and what she meant to him but he accepted that he had a duty, that he couldn’t live a normal life even if he wanted to and in Endgame he even was the one to urge people to move on in the post snap world. Steve is a selfless, kind person and he couldn’t and wouldn’t sit on the sidelines while others suffer. It’s just not him. He also kinda fucked up the timeline. As far as I understood (feel free to correct me on this) because he returned the stones to their original locations the timeline stayed the same, it didn’t branch like the Ancient One said it would if even one stone would be removed. So, that means that the Peggy he went back to is the Peggy from the main timeline but we were told they can’t change the past so how can he go back and be with her if it is the main timeline while also doing what he did post coming out of the ice? It boggles my mind. But putting that aside, it’s just not Steve. His whole ark was moving on. And sure when he went to the 70s with Tony he saw Peggy and maybe thought to himself that there was a chance to be with her BUT our Steve, present Steve is not the same with the one who just came out of the ice 70 years ago. Yes he’d long for and miss her and want to go back but ultimately he wouldn’t because he moved on. He had a reunion with Peggy when she was old and it was bittersweet but he had closure, in a sense. 

The fact that he passed on his shield to Falcon. I know that is what happens in the comics but here we are talking about the MCU and in the MCU it does not make sense. Falcon had no ark in these movies (if I am not mistaken), and he does not have any powers of his own. He is just a guy with wings. in the comics he has powers so it makes sense to take on the mantle of Cap. In the MCU giving him the shield doesn’t mean added powers as well. Having a black captain america is an amazing concept and i’m 100% for it just not Falcon. 

I found it hilarious yet awful how Banner first said that time travel is not his area of expertise only to have him later on explaining time travel to everyone. Like, you could have made Tony do it after he came back and cracked time travel. I get Banner could know some stuff but if you establish he doesn’t know then he doesn’t know. 

While the CGi on Hulk was great for me it looked like uncanny valley for some reason. I know Professor Hulk is a thing in the comics but it looked so awkward and weird and it showed how the writers had no idea what to do with him like that. Banner shined when he was in his astral projection form while talking with the Ancient One but looked awkward for the rest of the movie. 

Captain Marvel - yeah she had the cool cool scene at the end which I loved but I dislike her character a lot. 

The plot point with Nebula being the means Thanos finds out about time travelling. 

The joke at the end with Thor and Star Lord dragged on for so long and it really wasn’t funny. Except the Asgardians of the Galaxy part, that was hilarious. 

Questions I had: 

How did Steve return the soul stone? 

If past Gamora came to the future and assuming it was the same timeline why couldn’t they go and grab Black Widow? Sure it would cheapen her sacrifice and I don’t want that to happen but it is a question that you have to wonder about. 

Nebula kills her past self…and nothing happens? I mean I know Hulk said your past becomes your future and all that but it doesn’t make sense however you look at it. Except if that Nebula was from a different branch, a different reality. 

If past Thanos came into the future and got killed there does that mean that the snap does not happen, assuming it is the same timeline? and if it’s not then does that mean there’s a timeline out there where the snap outright didn’t happen? 

How did Thanos destroy the Infinity stones in the first place? He is the most powerful being in the MCU so far but you gotta wonder how did he accomplish such a thing.

The movie was incredibly enjoyable, it didn’t feel like 3 hours at all. It was darker than Infinity War but less solid than the former. At least in my opinion. It is truly emotional to see all of the MCU movies leading up to these 2 which are by all means masterpieces of the genre. I mean sure they have flaws but we’ve got to admit they did raise the bar a lot. Many of the MCU movies did. Some titles were bland, sure but most were not. 

I’d give this movie a 9,5 out 10 which is almost perfect in my book. It was a perfect conclusion, all the time travel shenanigans and plot holes aside.

Something else I remembered that’s still very good in AUs like family au is when people meet austin and are like okay this fucking entitled asshole is here, cool. But then meet his parents and are like wait hold on??? ????? what’s the catch?????????? Until realizing no june and oliver are actually pretty chill and friendly? Weird! But i also like how austin is with them being something that throws people off, too. Like not only is it strange that oliver and june don’t act so distant and annoyed and cold like austin does, but when they visit, austin doesn’t act so much like that either. He’s not super cheerful and friendly all of a sudden, but it’s clear he’s a bit more warm and relaxed than he normally is. You can catch a slight smile on his lips more, even if other times he’s shooting his dad unamused frowns because i’ve immediately fallen in love with the idea of oliver trying his hand at dad jokes sometimes to try and get a laugh out of austin and them only working like 1% of hte time and the rest of the time austin is just like internally ugh about it like yeah haha super funny dad T_T. There’s also that 1% though! Austin seems like he doesn’t have a sense of humor the rest of the time but sometimes his dad gets him to crack a laugh, or starts some inside joke they’ve had since austin was 10 and austin rolls his eyes but he still finishes the joke with a smh-type chuckle and he’s still gentle and doesn’t mention about how tired the joke has gotten over the years. His parents try to take care with touching him out of the blue because they know he’s not comfortable about touches, but it’s clear he’s way more comfortable with a hug from them or sitting on a couch so their arms are touching than he is with other people. I touched on that with the swap superpower/family au talk, how they may have had fights and austin may sometimes tire of how his parents are, but at the end of the day, he loves them so much, and he respects them and cares about them, more than any other person he knows. And that’s gotta be such a weird thing for anyone seeing it the first time, especially upon realizing oh that’s not him faking it like how he’ll usually fake being polite???? He just genuinely is comfortable around them.

Also, GTA au, Austin’s parents visiting one time and them having no clue he’s doing criminal shit so him having to be very secretive and very careful about their visit. Very good bonus to that is at some point while austin and kyle are at austin’s house talking to austin’s parents, ivan coming over to see kyle and austin trying very hard to get rid of ivan until the parents notice and question who it is before “Oh /you’re/ Ivan! Austin, don’t be rude; come in, please, we’re so glad we get the chance to meet you!” Because I think kyle somewhat keeps in touch with them, since they were like secondary parents who were nicer and cared about him and he super values that. Austin probably calls his parents once every week or two, it’s a scheduled thing, he’d do it much less often if it didn’t placate them on his living so far away and make it so that they are okay with only visiting rarely. Kyle calls them probably around as frequently but not as standardly; just calls them every couple weeks or so to catch up when something important happens instead of just ‘oh this is the time to do it’. let them know that he and austin are still doing good, yes that wasn’t just austin lying so they wouldn’t worry, no they’re really doing good! He def calls them more than he calls his own parents, 100%. So he’d have probably told them when he started dating someone more seriously, vaguely says they met at work and moves on to how fucking great this guy Ivan is, he really likes him! So them actually being aware ivan exists and means something to kyle and very excited to see who he is and -judge if he’s a good choice for kyle- get to know him. And i’d imagine ivan is super polite upon kyle introducing them as his aunt and uncle, “/basically/ honorary mum and dad”. once he figures out they don’t know about the crime thing, pretty respectful of that, too, though i do like ivan also playing the game of how much can i vaguely allude to their son being a criminal to freak austin out without actually revealing it and making kyle upset at my being rude and possibly outing him as a criminal too. Ivan please, austin’s never asked anything of you except that you just completely leave him and his cousin alone; be reasonable here.

Also i think this being another thing where it makes it obvious that even if he’s very distant on surface level from family, it’s still one of the few points he gets stubborn on, because even if it’s a 3 or 4 on the scale of importance to him, his scale usually only goes up to 5 anyway compared to everyone else being 1-10. Again, if you watch him with his parents, it’s clear he’s a little tired of them but he still loves them very much and appreciates them genuinely in a way he doesn’t with most people. He does care about them, it’s just muted compared to others, especially compared to kyle. I think it took them a little while to get that too and for a while during his teen years when he first started getting like this, they just kind of assumed okay so maybe our son hates us??? I’m not sure why since we’re trying to be super nice to him but our nephew expresses more love for us than our own son so like. Maybe he jsut doesn’t like us anymore, oh no. and that was also partially because austin was most exhausted with his parents during his teen years when he was trying to pull away and they were pulling him closer in an attempt to keep from losing him, but eventually enough time around him + finally talking it out a couple times helped them see like no, he still loves them the most, it’s just his most is not as high or visible as would be expected. Anyway, back to point, up until now the only thing that could get austin to really make any attempt at a stand against ivan was kyle. And even then, it’s not austin threatening ivan to keep kyle safe, he’s not a fool. He probably tries to talk to ivan once, but it’s not a threat thing, just hey. At this point he gets he can’t break them up. He couldn’t tell kyle what to do if he tried, and he frequently does, and if he can’t get kyle to do something he doesn’t want to, of course he couldn’t get ivan to. But he wants to make sure ivan knows that like, sure, austin can’t come kick his ass if kyle dies thanks to ivan, but austin won’t just let it slide if ivan gets kyle killed and he can find other ways to make it less worth it to ivan than if he’d just kept kyle alive. Also i like ivan, a little amused because thank god /you’re/ trying to intimidate /me/ to keep /my/ boyfriend alive, asking austin flat out if he’s threatening him, but austin just dismissing it with a simple, “of course not” as kyle comes back into the room. And that being mirrored after the meeting with his parents (i keep wanting to call them oliver and june here but they’re not named that in this au because oliver’s already jaws breakers crew ugh) and ivan. Ivan and kyle planning to leave and austin excusing himself from the room as well, saying he’ll see the two out, be right back mum and dad. Makes an additional excuse for kyle to go ahead to the car, maybe insisting he just had something related to an upcoming job to discuss with ivan, which kyle doesn’t know for sure isn’t true but ivan does because he’s not doing any jobs with anyone in oliver’s crew right now. So once everyone’s out of earshot, austin actually thanking ivan for playing nice and keeping the secret with his parents. He could have done without the occasional ‘oops, almost let the cat out of the bag’ jokes, but ultimately he appreciates it. /that being said though/, he wants to make it crystal clear his parents are off limits. And when he says that, it’s with a firmness he didn’t even have when talking about kyle. Because kyle’s a wreck, but he makes his own decisions to live in this life that puts him at risk and honestly, there’s just as much of a chance he gets himself killed as ivan gets him killed, probably more so. But his parents are outside of this world, they did not agree to be put in danger by it and he won’t have them put at risk just because kyle can’t keep his mouth shut for five seconds or because ivan has the worst timing in the world. Basically like. If this makes any sense, austin would avenge kyle, but defend his parents, y’know? And again, austin isn’t normally threatening in appearance, but he steps close to ivan as if he somehow has as much intimidation power as the other blond. And he makes it clear this isn’t about not letting things slide or whatever. He’d be upset if kyle died, sure. He’d be frustrated, he’d even be mad to a point. But if either of his parents were hurt, he wouldn’t /just/ be upset or frustrated or mad. He’d be /furious/. He doesn’t let himself get /truly furious/ very often and there’s a reason for that, one that he’d really rather not have to come up between them, so he wants to ask ivan very nicely to leave things at this. They had a nice meeting, ivan got to talk to kyle’s family, got to even impress them. austin knows his parents and they weren’t lying when they said it was a pleasure to meet him as ivan started to leave. But that’s it. He doesn’t go near them or even look at them again, and once they leave the city, he forgets they even exist. And again, ivan tilts his head with a wide grin, asking to confirm if austin’s trying to threaten him here? And austin, making the most direct eye contact he’s probably ever made with ivan, says of course not. But this time, he follows that up to instead insist he’s /promising/ ivan. And admitting he gets how this goes, he’s sure this means nothing to ivan. That ivan is probably inwardly laughing at austin right, so austin hopes ivan will at least listen to the fact that kyle would be angry if either his aunt or uncle got hurt while visiting, too, since kyle keeps trying to reassure austin that ivan wouldn’t do anything to make kyle upset. But he just… he feels it’s only right that he make it clear that upsetting kyle really isn’t the thing to worry about this time around. That’s all. Thanks ivan again for being pleasant enough as kyle pulls the car up, inwardly a little relieved so that kyle being there makes it less likely for ivan to try pushing back so much on austin after that.

God the worst fucking part is like, yeah, again, ivan probably takes this threat with a grain of salt, very amused if not offended after he was already /so polite/, how rude can you /be/, austin? But also we’ve touched with toni and mads that they both became interesting to ivan when he saw first hand that edge in them. Mads had a bad day and got violent, and suddenly she’s fun despite her not wanting to be to him. Toni accidentally shows ivan he’s way into knife and blood play underneath that mask of his and ivan wants to crack it so he can see what else toni’s hiding under there. Again, I think ivan wouldn’t be that impressed with austin’s threat, he knows whatever happens, he can break austin in two when it comes down to it, but there’d probably have to be something intriguing of austin telling him ‘i don’t let myself get exceptionally mad for a reason’ because oh??? Hey austin, what’s that reason??? Hey austin tell me what hte reason is. I assume it’s you think you’re more dangerous/violent past a point you’re comfortable with but how far past that point are we talking here??? Hey, hey austin~? 

Like he probably still won’t hurt the two i’d suspect? Austin’s not wrong that kyle’d also be upset if they were hurt, Ivan could tell during the convo how much kyle cares about them and there were a number of stories of either of the two looking out for kyle in a way his own parents never did which is nice. + i imagine ivan leaving that convo really liking the boys’ family as people and like they’re not exceptionally special to him but they were nice and friendly and he probably would have left them alone on his own even if austin hadn’t said anything, he likes fucking with austin but he’s not as just randomly dangerous as austin seems to think he is, he’d probably want a reason beyond ‘it’ll fuck with austin’ before just killing a couple innocent people that mean something to kyle. And ivan still can’t totally touch austin because kyle will be mad if ivan hurts or kills austin and again, ivan doesn’t want kyle to be mad. He’s willing to let doug keep living to keep kyle from getting too upset, so obvi austin’s pretty much off limits unless it becomes way more worth it in the end. But him trying to figure out okay what could i get at that would poke at austin enough to really set him off without crossing a line that sets /kyle/ off. Which prolly just puts him into testing grounds and man ivan is good at stress testing people. Austin elects himself as the new toy so ivan can figure out how legit his warning of making him mad is, whoops!

On a brighter note tho, speaking of family visiting, blake visiting during breaks in school and meeting ivan. at first iffy but eventually warming up to ivan well enough. Ivan probably at least somewhat amused by the time he spends with them, too; didn’t realize so much sass could fit into such a short person but they pull it off and it’s spectacular. Ivan telling blake stories of times he fucked with austin and blake loving it and giving approval of ivan at that point. Wants to keep you alive and keep austin on his toes? I like him! Also, ivan starting to lie about the crime stuff to blake when tehy first meet and kyle stepping in oh no no no they know i’m a crime guy and ivan like oh good, hi i’m a crime guy as well, nice to meet you.

So I saw The Movie. Spoilers--good, bad (or neutral), and ugly--below. Spoiler-free: not as good as the first Avengers, but better by far than AoU. 

The Good

This film made me even more furious with Joss Whedon, solely because it proves that the problems in AoU were of his own making, namely his inability to handle too many characters and therefore incompetence when it comes to a film of this type. The Russo brothers took a very smart approach to this, in that they knew they couldn’t take the time to give all of the good guys the characterization they’d have gotten in a film with a smaller cast, so they basically made Thanos the main character, which is really what should’ve happened with Ultron but inexplicably did not happen. 

And man, what a joy Thanos is as a character. So many superhero villains are so kind of... one dimensional, tbh. Or not one dimensional, but rather, they seem to have an understanding that what they’re doing is evil or, if they don’t have that understanding, a lack of real conviction. They’re nascent Sith, in a sense, running on either the sheer joy of being cruel or on a heightened desire for vengeance. They can be a lot of fun, don’t get me wrong, but they seem, for lack of a better word, like cartoon villains. 

They’re fun, like I said, and the world is full of people who are just... evil for the sake of being evil (as we’ve found out in the last ~2+ years more than a lot of us realized, I think), but they get tired when they’re the villain of everything. Chaotic Evil, in other words, gets less compelling when it’s all you see. It becomes the same person with a different mask, 9/10 times, which I’m sure contributes a lot to superhero movie fatigue. 

Thanos, though, I enjoyed because he was 100% convinced that what he was doing was for the good of the universe. Ultron was trying to go there, I think, but Whedon handled it with about as much delicacy as a bull in a china shop (Ultron is mostly redeemed by his being played by James Spader, who is a delight at all times, but that also ends up being his downfall because you get the feeling that he’s winking at the audience the entire time... “I’m saying this with conviction, but here’s a quip to show that I know I’m evil.”). Thanos actually felt real. He felt like he believed everything he was saying, like he truly thought he was doing the universe a mercy, that he was the good guy. 

And that doesn’t redeem him by any means (incoming people screeching about how I’m downplaying genocide or stanning because dude’s evil, y’all), but it makes him infinitely more compelling, and GOD, that is refreshing. It’s the same way that Killmonger was refreshing because, even though you don’t agree with it, you see his point. I mean, who among us that’s worked retail hasn’t wanted to snap our fingers and make half of humanity vanish? It’s been more than a decade since my last retail position, and I still have those days.

On a different level, it’s that garbage that gets pushed by freshman level philosophy students who are like “people should stop having babies” because that, not a mismanagement of resources by the wealthy and powerful, is why there’s scarcity. It’s rubbish, absolute rubbish (and it doesn’t work because science tells us that the universe, that all of existence, is infinite... and fuck, the movie’s science tells us that as well--Bananabread Cabletelevision had his little moment of hunting for spoilers and only got through about 1.4 million of the unending possibilities that exist BUT I DIGRESS), but at first blush, you ask yourself, “Wait, does he have a point?” No, he does not.

A rundown of other Goods:

Look, Thor in lightning form is the sexiest creature in existence. I’m sorry, I don’t make the rules. 

Also I appreciated him getting another smushface. And then the immediately following Battle of the Chrises (all I’m saying is that if there’s not a threeway Chris standoff in Part Deux, I’ll be very sad. Also, someone please cast Chris Pine in Captain Marvel, he needs to spend the rest of eternity watching powerful women heroes in awe).

The people who were allowed gave fantastic performances. RDJ will be sorely missed as Iron Man (because if y’all think he’s living past the next film, I’m sorry for your loss), and of the good guys, I felt like he came the closest to being the main character here. Which has been true of the other Avengers films as well, so that’s nice to see. Ultimately, these first three phases of the MCU were Tony Stark’s story, and that finale will be really... well, painful. 

Other great performances: Tom Holland (darling baby child, I wept for you), Mark Ruffalo (good at constipation), Bagels Cucumbers (that hurts to admit, he’s the Worst, but damn if he isn’t a good actor), Zoe Saldana (you’d better come back), Chris Hemsworth (as always), Paul Bettany (NOOO), and Elizabeth Olsen (poor darling). 

The humor was nicely balanced, not fourth-wall breaking like you get in the Whedon Avengerses, but logical. It was kind of like exhaling: inhale the action and serious stakes, exhale the humor. It allowed breathing room in all the intensity, so that was great.

Also how can I have missed Wakanda that much if it’s only been like... not even two months since I saw Black Panther?

Look, if the next movie involves just one scene--just one!--of Okoye, Nat, and Wanda fighting together, my ticket will have been worth its price.

Related, Proxima Midnight is (a) literally the coolest name for anyone ever, and (b) my wife now.

The Neutral-Bad

Or, really, more the expected. 

In any ensemble movie, you’re going to have a lot of characters whose purpose is just to step on scene, state their name and allegiance, and then fade into the background. This ended up being the case with pretty much all of Team Cap, and it was to their detriment. They had their shining moments (”Earth just lost her greatest defender” made me ship things like FedEx), but as opposed to the group above, they didn’t really have a lot to do? Or even really much in the way of reactions? They just sort of... came and saw and fought and that was it. 

It felt a lot like nobody knew what to do with those characters, which is fair enough, but it also felt like they were wasted, and they shouldn’t have been. If I had to guess, I’d guess that the writers had to pick and choose which good guys they wanted to focus on and which new Avengers and old Avengers would get the attention. Tony because these films have been basically a huge Iron Man series. Thor because I think? the plot requires him to be Important, as per comic books. But as much as I adore Thor, I wish there had been a focus on Steve more. With Tony, you’ve got the plot of “oh my god Thanos, the thing I’ve been afraid of since 2008″ but maybe Steve could’ve had more of a reluctant plot, like he’s been heroing all this time but all he’s gotten for it is locked up and exiled and shit? I don’t know, point is that if Captain America is going to be so prominent in the MCU logo, he should get a bigger slice of the plot pie.

Also I’m annoyed with Gamora’s passing, though I wouldn’t call it a complete fridging because it wasn’t just for mangst. It was just mostly for mangst. Either way, though, I think that’s the death (besides the end ones) that bothered me the most. It didn’t feel unnecessary and was probably the most shocking, when you look at it objectively (more on that in a second), but... I don’t know, it bothered me, but I can’t 100% put my finger on why/how. I do appreciate, though, that it gave Gamora a decent arc in the film. 

Anyway, to the deaths. The presumable permadeaths (Heimdall, Loki, and Gamora) were, for the most part, unsurprising. The Thor trilogy is over, so Heimdall and Loki end up being kind of extra weight, the former because he doesn’t have a lot to do that’s not in a role filled by another character, and the latter because the only other way he could’ve worked in this film was as an eleventh hour heroic sacrifice, and that feels almost too woobie-ish, like beyond Zuko levels of woobie. 

The Great Dust Rapture at the end was also fairly unsurprising, mostly because there’s no way a good chunk of those characters aren’t coming back. At least two have sequels literally named after them coming out sometime in the next couple of years; as I also pointed out to Kyle, “Look, Gamora may be dead forever, but if the rest of the Guardians remain dust, GotG3 will just be The Adventures of Rocket Raccoon Being Very Sad.” The non-dusted bunch are the OG Avengers, plus or minus a few friends; the stakes for the next film are, therefore, a LOT higher, since all the OG Avengers have finished their trilogies and, should they survive, will probably only ever show up again in cameos. We know T’Challa and Peter Parker and the Guardians of the Galaxy and probably Dr. Strange and everyone still have Things To Do. 

But the OG Avengers do not, and they couldn’t really kill off the main characters of the franchise with one film to go, so...

(also, calling it now: the next film is going to be The Avengers: Rebirth. I will put money on it)

The Ugly

But HNNGH. Okay.

I 100% understand the choices they made with the dustinatings, but like... there’s no suspense whatsoever. If Marvel didn’t release their film titles 6000 years in advance, maybe the stakes would’ve been stakier, but as it stands, it’s like... come on people. 

You know what would’ve worked way better and made for stakier stakes? Don’t kill off the main characters from franchises that still have sequels coming out. Kill off sidekicks. T’Challa doesn’t die, but maybe M’baku or Okoye does. Spare at least three of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Leave Peter Parker’s fate uncertain (though his death scene was literally the only one that made me tear up because TOM HOLLAND IS JUST THAT GOOD, DARLING FROG-IN-MOUTH BOY). Bucky, Sam, Nick Fury, Maria Hill--they can remain dusted. But if you want to keep the stakes for the second film while actually letting us believe that there won’t be any resurrections this time, maybe don’t kill people who we know will be back in various MCU films at future dates. 

It’s like I keep thinking when I watch trailers for Solo or literally any prequel anything: the problem with 99% of prequels is that we know who lives and who doesn’t, so giving us trailer shots of Chewbacca in danger, for example, is like trying to play peek-a-boo with an adult. We have object permanence, it’s not surprising when you pull your hands away and your face is still there. It’s not surprising that Chewbacca isn’t going to get his face bashed away by a rock. It’s not surprising that somehow, in Avengers Four: You Asked For More, all the dusted people with eponymous films coming up will be back. 

Another big plot hole: why didn’t Dr. Strange go and do his future vision the second a giant green man fell into his living room? Bruce, as Bruce, tells him “Thanos is coming for the macguffins” and then he goes and spends the next 5 minutes going through possibilities and then figures out the very easy way to solve the thing. 

That easy way? Just have Wanda destroy the time stone. Now we’re not panicking about taking out Vision’s brain as fast as we can (point: that scene was unrealistic, Shuri would’ve actually had it done in about 13 seconds flat) and Thanos has lost and maybe he goes around killing people manually but at least he can’t rewind time if things don’t go his way. 

The movie didn’t do this, obviously, but it’s one of those things where it’s like “if your audience can figure out a better way of doing things before the credits even fucking roll, maybe revise your script.”

Other big frustration: does every Avengers film really need Thor to go on an epic quest away from everyone else for half the film? Don’t get me wrong, it was pretty cool to see him jumpstart a sun and see Peter Dinklage being huge (all I’m saying is that if Disney ever acquires the rights to the X-Men, things are going to get very confusing) and see a new Mjolnir-like-object, but oh. my. god. Every time those scenes were happening, I felt like it was a bathroom break. Like legit, that fucking ax had better cleave Thanos in half in the next movie because otherwise, that was so much wasted time that could’ve been devoted to literally anything else. 

Final Miscellaneous Thoughts

Maybe this means that GotG3 will be about Peter Quill actually growing up and dealing with his issues. I hope it does. 

Also, Nebula/Tony Stark road trip back to earth? I’m all about it. 

Wonder Woman would’ve ended this all in about 30 seconds flat, which is why Captain Marvel can’t show up until the next film. 

The next film is literally going to be at least 90 minutes of Thanos refusing to interact with anyone trying to kill him because he’s on vacation and fuck you. 

Literally why does anyone still live in NYC in the MCU? The first movie would’ve been enough to convince me to move to a cornfield in Nebraska and just stay there for eternity. 

“Thanos will return.” Along with literally everyone else SERIOUSLY THIS IS NOT SUSPENSEFUL MARVEL AAAAAAUGH.

+ oh well you made a promise.  lets pack our shit up guys.  he made a promise!  a promise cannot be broken!  

+ Out of all of the shittiest plot devices and conveniences that happen in this movie, making Tony watch his parents’ murder is the shittiest.  I have many things to say.  So many things.

1.  what fucking failure of a pathologist did this autopsy? 2. why didn't Steve or Bucky warn Tony about this as the footage queued up?  Why didn't they say to him, dude Zemo has the footage of my pal killing your family?  Why didn’t Steve smash the monitor?  Why didn’t anyone, at any point, do anything to protect Tony from the gruesome and unnecessary reality of watching his parents die? 3.  if hydra/shield got all its files dumped into the internet how has Tony not found this information out yet?   4.  Why would the writers do this?  Why?  Why go through the charade of the accords and the pretense of a moral disagreement resulting in teammates being imprisoned and the Avengers being forever torn if you were just going to show up in the last 20 minutes and be like ahaha, no actually, we're just going to show Tony his parents being murdered.   5.  Steve you better take your hand off Tony.  You better just go ahead and take a minute and reassess your life. 6.  but if they were banking on this moment reversing an entire movie of people rooting for Cap by giving Tony a last second justification for this fight, they miscalculated.  This moment is heart-wrenching but Cap’s still the hero.  Tony’s a villain here (because the movie establishes Bucky as the innocent victim and there can’t be another one of those) and it’s unfair.

+  I kind of wanted to kill Bucky too when he choked Tony's Mom.  But also someone needs to take away that person's medical license because I cannot imagine that being choked to death looks the same as dying in a car accident.  If this were CSI the dude with the red hair would have callously told Tony his parents were murdered like 20 years ago.

+ I can't handle Robert Downey Jr's face.  God bless Evans for managing it.

+  I'd punch Steve in the head too.

+  I saw a post talking about how Tony could kill Bucky if he wanted to but he's not trying to kill him, he's trying to beat him up because he's emotionally compromised and that's a good theory but the man just tried to shoot him in the face with a missile.  Then his hand light thing (repulsor?)  

+ the MOVIE, the WRITERS, doesn't want Tony to kill Bucky.  That's not the same thing as Tony not wanting the man dead.  Like maybe as the fight goes on, Tony gets more control but he starts out full ass wanting Bucky dead.

+  "He killed my Mom."  because fuck Howard.

+  Tony is not, however, trying to kill Steve.  He's actively not trying to kill Steve.  

+  This movie put hours of effort into getting that one shot of Tony shooting the shield.  Great shot guys.  It's hollow.  It's stupid.

+ T'Challa, all you wanted was to kill Bucky until you suddenly gained wisdom by being 100% done with watching some white american dudes beat each other up.  You were all about vengeance and now you're like: whoa, wait a minute.  Maybe I'm not crazy as fuck like these unstable motherfuckers.

+  Fuck you Zemo.  Fuck your motivation, your backstory, your everything.

+  The living are not done with you yet is literally the best line of the whole movie.

+  See if Tony were capable of using lethal force on Steve he could have killed him, because unlike Bucky who was off-center of the chest beam, Steve was right there.

+  Tony, nobody and nothing means as much to Steve as Bucky.  Not anything.  He's had 3 moves to establish this.

+ Steve just kicked Bucky in the face with the Iron Man suit, Bucky's Dead.

+  What a cheap, hollow, soulless shot you got there with Steve crushing the arc reactor and Tony being literally afraid for his life.  

+  Tony shouting about the Sheild is like a kid on the playground who just lost at tag shouting 'no you didn’t tag me' on repeat while the rest of the group goes to play on the swings instead because the whiny kid is annoying.  

+  Martin Freeman is just pissy because he didn't realize you were impersonating someone else.  He's sore because you had that whole conversation about the Hobbit acting like you were pals but he found out in fact you weren't the same guy he invited to dinner last week but a TOTALLY DIFFERENT DUDE and now he's going to overcompensate and try to act badass but he's Martin Freeman so its difficult.

+ I'm glad Rhodey, the only person who ever believably thought the Accords were a good idea so we can see the look on Tony's face as you realize that he never did agree before and now that he's broken the Accords outright, has no chance of really agreeing.

+  ...are you Tony Stank?  Steve.  Steve your hand writing sucks.

+  Steve: "now that I've clearly emerged from this movie as the hero, I'm going to voice-over an apology letter that lets you and the audience know that I really am the American Hero.  The lone cowboy type in the spangly outfit that effortlessly defends the ideals of America (arrogance, ego centrism, global domination with a smile).  While I act the shit out of this apology letter, I'll be doing a montage sort of thing to show that I'm such a badass good friend and leader that I broke into a prison that's UNDER WATER to save my pals.  And I did it alone.  Like a lone ranger.  And maybe T'Challa helped but MOSTLY IT WAS ME.  Look at me grin at my pal Sam.  See I like Sam, but I don't like you.  But I'm going to say sorry I never told you about your parents because you found out and it hurts my image as the perfect American Dreamsicle.  I'm sorry, Tony.  I was never going to bang you.  It was always Bucky for me.  Bucky and Peggy and then Sharon and maybe Sam.  I'd do Natasha once or twice but never you, Tony.  Never you.  You're old.  And I liked Howard better.  Howard liked Fondue and he was a Good Guy unlike you.  You're a piece of shit, Tony.  Sorry about your Mom.  Also I'm such an upright dude that I'll go ahead and give you this phone to imply you're incapable of finding or contacting me without this piece of shit.  And I'll show up if you call, if I answer.  Truth is I'm old and out of time, I don't even know if that is a phone.  I just talk to the magic voice emanating from my hearing aid.  Hearing aids are great!  They help hard of hearing folks and they connect me to my team.  You don’t have one because you’re not part of the team.  Anyway, I'm hanging with my new pal T'Challa, he was your pal but he knows I'm morally righteous now and we hang out all day.  I'd bang him too.  But not you, Tony.  Not You."

+ T'Challa's entire staff/family: wait you were going to kill this man but now we're sticking him in the deep freezer because he's an ok guy? T'Challa: I've been through an entire arc of character development that happened entirely off camera and emerged a wiser, better man.  

+ The needlessness of half the plot in this movie is infuriating beyond measure.  But hey, it’s still selling movie tickets.

Episode 1: “I’m shaking in my crocs.” - Tyler

Okay so to begin my game I've started to attach myself to everyone. I'm trying to communicate with them to the best of my ability. However, Kai searching for the idol is pretty suspect if you ask me. I'll keep him close to see what he makes out to be. Other than that, I want to try and be everyone's best friend, but then get them out when necessary. From first impressions, I feel like I can trust Devon and Brendan. Danganronpa solidarity. However, Alexa may be targeted for being the only girl on an otherwise all-guys tribe. If she does get targeted, I want to try and save her so she's in my pocket. Let's play some survivor!

 Already straight out of the gate these people are boring me. I woke up super early cause here i am thinking all these Americans will be awake for this. But nope, pretty much no one is online. Quite frankly, i'm thinking of sueing.

  Ahhhh I'm so glad I'm here! It's exciting

 So Turkey just asked me to be his first ally seems like a stand up guy that I can get along with. In small tribes you can never be comfortable but pairs have run the game before.

 So the game has just officially started! I'm starting to get a feel for everyone and I'm liking some of my options. I started having a conversation with David and straight away knew I wanted an alliance with him. He seems dumb and I like dumb because it usually means they are easier to manipulate. I would love to hire all the dumb people to be my firing squad, after all they're all just expendable sheep.

Heyo. So, after taking a look at the roster, I don't think that I stand a chance to win, as I'm the only non-native English speaker. From my experience, I should avoid "standing out".

So to not stand out even more, I won't be getting a really high score in the first game. 

I won't look for a hidden idol either. The people aren't too talkative so far, which really isn't a bad thing. I can just blend in, hopefully. Let's see where we go from here by laying low :)

 This reward challenge is so infuriating, i ended up getting a really good score eventhough i have 0 clue how, but hey, i'll roll with it. David just told the tribe that he can't participate in this reward challenge as his plane was delayed 5 hours. Not good enough David. I expect you to get in that control tower and sort out the planes yourself.

I hate winterbells, I hate it with avengence. The annoying bunny, the annoying bells and the annoying music!!!!!!!!!! ARGH!

 With two members of Tanha being mutes i'm feeling pretty safe if we were to go into tribal. Myself, David, Andreas and Amanda are the only people talking in the group chat. This leaves Valentina and Haylei on the outs and hopefully they're some low hanging fruit to pick off. David has already come to me trying to lock them in, so i'm going to stand back and let him be the boss because its way too early for me to want to stand out. You can play in the mud, i'll stand here and watch.

 Couple Things: 

1. I hate Winterbells. 2. Stix's comment about how he was going to vote rubbed me the wrong way. It's just like, keep it to yourself. If you are just going to be out in the open about how you are going to play, I don't think I could trust you to keep secrets safe. All in all, I would rather keep him at arm's length with information. I can see him playing a very loyal game though, so that helps me if he wants to work together. 3. Brandon came to me and offered to work together. Of course I said yes. We both like Danganronpa and we both seem to have similar tastes in games. I want him to be my ride-or-die since he came to me first and all. I think right now is too early to make any moves, though. So we'll just wait and see 4. Alexa has a HUGE score. I want either me or Brandon to buddy up with her so we can find out what she did at the Garden of Eden.

  So we're doing this first immunity challenge and all I can think is, wow, my teams killing it! Why should I kill myself when 1) we are already doing so good. ANd 2) I don't have a target on my back at all. So you bet your ass I did a minimum job and also lied to my tribe! Now I just gotta hope they don't figure out that I lied, but if they do, I feel pretty comfortable in my abilities to talk my way out of it.

okay so I've been doing pretty good in this challenge, i think lmfao, and my tribe is like "33k" "160k" When im over here fucking getting close to 1million. Thank god this is a reward challenge but im really hoping that the other tribe suck ass as much as my tribe does lmfao. Also, im not in this community but i thought i'd try it out, but everyone says "akfadkdfkagklag" im like wtf

 I really like my tribe! Everyone is pretty active and nice! Kai has flawless opinions on BB19, Stix and I are from the same city, Branden and I are both from tengaged which is surprising since I didn't think anyone from tengaged would be playign this season, Devon is pretty quiet but that's okay I know he's been busy with work the first few days and Rafael is pretty fun to talk to.

  So i scored the best challenge score on my tribe! Which honestly wasn't hard, they're all very incompetent. Looking at some of the scores from other tribes, im shaking in my crocs. So i get sent to the garden of Eden with Brandan and McKenna. We have a riveting conversation on call and all decide not to take that lovely temptation. Well i mean i said i wouldn't. I want that idol! I came here to play so honey, you're gonna have to hand over that clue. I wouldn't call it lying, i mean if i told them i was going to take it they'd have a one up on me, and we cant have that. So now i have to throw the immunity challenge! Sorry Tahna, looks like i accidently slept threw the entire challenge! After all i am Australian! David has just told me that i'm his number 1 and I guess he is my number 1 as well, but that doesnt mean im telling him i have the idol clue! Also because i told him 'all about what happened in Eden' he promised to tell me what happened if he was to go in. Sorry David ;)

 The tribe winning the reward really raises moral. That advantage will be super useful for the upcoming immunity. The tribe has decided to go and give the extra life to Brandan since he did get the highest score on the reward challenge. This might get him labeled as comp beast, and thus targeted. For immunity, the plan is to target one tribe and get them out so it ends the challenge quickly and efficiently. I came up with the plan, and have been the most active in the chat. I'm scared of this since it would make me look like a leader, and being a leader puts a target on your back. I doesn't bode well with me. Other than that, I think if we did go to tribal, I would vote out Stix since he has been a bit aloof during the time the game has started. I would like to continue working with Brandan, but have also grown fond of Kai. If Kai, Brandan, and I were in an alliance, that would be my ideal scenario. Raffy logging out!

 I'm trying to convince McKenna or Ally to take on my ideal plan for the challenge as my own, I do not want to put my name out and be singled out if the plan fails. My plan: I'm trying to get our whole tribe to 'shoot' at the Tanha members, send them to tribal because Koalang has an advantage. I personally believe the advantage is an auto dodge if they can't get it off. If Aphi Sa coordinates shots on Tanha, Koalong might tag along and send them to tribial instead of us. Obviously, I don't feel 100% safe, I'm going to be working at the beginning of the challenge. If I get shot while I can't get on my phone, I'm out. I am trying to implement a tribe plan for the challenge without tagging my name on as I can't be there to lead the troops out of the gate.

My tribe is hard to get the correct feel of, I'm not sure if I'm talking to much to them or if they appreciate me having something to read. As far as alliance members go, I am currently trying to find who I would like to be most loyal to in this game. Zach is a strong front runner, as well as Charlotte. I like Ally and McKenna, but McKenna seems like the most likely to "Caesar me" JG is my ideal first boot if it comes to it. He doesn't talk in tribe and has not responded to my pms. Maybe they're all PMing behind me but I doubt it, our tribe chat is DEAD.

 It's annoying that we didn't get anywhere in the challenge. I know some people struggled but I'm like seriously, I struggled and you got less than me, really? I think some weren't really trying and if that happens again I won't be impressed!

 This idol clue was actually such an amazing advantage! After looking for the idol i realised that there was no way anyone could find the idol without the clue. So i know where im looking next round! I am encouraging people from my tribe to look for it so i can seem like a 'team player'. When really, they have no hope.

 I think I've placed myself really well socially in the game. I've been talking and bonding with everyone in the tribe. Though I doubt we will go to tribal. Our strategy is solid. The only change is that we've decided to go for the other tribe as one of their members, Tyler, basically threw the challenge by typing in the sharpshooter chat before the challenge began. Now tey are down to 5 members. This should be easy.

well that challenge was easy and I think i have very good social bonds right now and I hope I have something flowing with Ally and EG. Zach is chill but I think hes chill with everyone, charlotte is basically inactive and idk hes just weird lmfao, ian just talks to me but we never even formed anything hah

 OMFG what rubbish pile of poo tribe have you put me on. I am so so peed off right now. Considering I am the one with the bad timezone here...... URGH. I was gonna write a long complicated one and I am actually so beyond peed off I don't think I can. I'd better not go I am telling you that much. An 8 hour task and they lasted 16 fecking mins. Hardly anyone talks and noones putting any effort in.

AS expected, the plan worked flawlessy. Aphi Sa even helped out to take down the other tribe. It went smoothly, but Amanda really pulled it out even if she had no one but herself. I'm impressed and kind of sad. Sad that a simple typo brought her down. If she got to the merge or if I end up with her in a tribe, I would definitely love to work with her.

Yay we won both challenges! To recap my day a bit, I'm now in two separate duo alliances! I'm in #TeamBuffalo with Stix and Team Tengaged with Brandan, I really like both of them and Rafael so hopefully us 4 could possibly form a larger alliance together? We'll have to see.

 Ahhhh I'm so happy we won but I definitely think Amanda should get some sort of reward for doing that because the only thing that stopped her from winning was bad spelling.

 Just won our first immunity! My tribe is unstoppable and my plan is working great. I'm keeping a really strong social connection, while also making myself look like I'm beatable in challenges individually! You think firing at 6:06 was a mistake?....oh boy are you wrong. If I'm gonna win this thing, my plan needs to keep going Day by day. Just a little more than the day before. But I'll tell you what, next immunity challenge, if we somehow don't win. I'm ready to make a big move already.

Unless, we don't go to tribal until three tribes become two, I don't see this alliance lasting too long. But at least the two people I want to work with (Kai and Brandon) are with me. Alexa, if it comes down to it, will go out of everyone. For now, however, I need to up my social game with Kai and Brandon so they will want me around more than Alexa. Devon is also someone I feel like I can trust. A side duo with me will be pretty good for me. My tribe rankings would be: 1. Brandon (since he seems to be in everyone's ears and already calling strategic shots) 2. Me (not first because I haven't started strategizing with people) 3. Kai (third most active and useful in challenges) 4. Alexa (she's in by no means a bad spot. The reward challenge should make her higher, but she also doesn't interact as much. Tanha, it was nothing personal we just wanted the advantage to be a non issue and from your reward scores, you seemed like the tribe that would have the least active at the beginning. When Tyler started typing in the challenge chat before the game started I kept thinking to myself, "Do it, come on do it, press enter!" That two round win is my strategic win, I came up with the plan to target Tanha, sorry, I came up with the idea that we do a spread offensive first round to take out the afk's at the start, I was the one who gave the list to the tribe of the names on the other tribes. I did that... with the help of my tribe. Ally is the only person in this game that knows that I was the mind behind a 15 minute challenge, I had to work so I was only going to be active for 3 or 4 rounds so I spent the time leading up to the challenge thinking of routes the challenge that could take and the fastest way to win it for my tribe whilst I could take part or set them up for success in my absence. I reiterate spread offense, logically I wouldn't be the only one who could only participate for so long and hit the people that would be in my boat. Then tactical strikes on the ones that dodge, sadly for Amanda she was the only one on her tribe who participated. My hat's off to you girl, 9 dodges in one round, I couldn't do it, alas a spelling error got you. Can happen to anyone one when the game is on the line and you know everyone is coming for you. Ally proved vital in my quest to get my plan portrayed to the tribe while making everyone feel like they were part of the discussion. In our tribal discussion she helped sway the conversation to points that would emphasis the plan I pm'd her about for the challenge.  Yeah, we were the target to go at the challenge, and it was sad to see us going down so quick, but oh well. With one person attending, that's just how it goes. Not much more to add here :)

 Okay so i'll give like a brief "initial thoughts" run through of everyone, where I stand, and how i'm feeling about the overall game. So, without further ado, let's introduce my fellow tribe mates! First we have Ally. So her and I briefly talked, and it was the minimal type of conversation. I heard from a fellow friend of mine that she is extremely loyal, trustworthy, and likeable, and that I should attempt to befriend her. My goal for the upcoming days is to grow really close with her, and try to form a solidified bond. Next, we have Charlotte. I know of her from another ORG, in which I evicted her (but it was an unanimous vote so let's hope it's not impacting on our relationship). Similar to Ally, we briefly talked on the first day, and it was more about other things opposed to just the simple "hey what's up!" talk, so that's something. I'll probably try to strengthen my relationship with her slightly. Ian's next. He's a goofy person to be honest. I think out of everyone, i've talked to him the most. He's not the most... relatable or easiest to talk to, but he's chill. I think I could see myself working with him to an extent, purely for the benefit of my game, but nonetheless, I need to keep talking to him! Following Ian, we have JG. I have not spoken one, single word to him/them/her. The reasoning is that I want to start a little bit, so we have a bond, but I need someone I can vote out first. Unfortunately, for the luck of draw and timing, they're the one I chose. Maybe things could change though? Who knows. The last individual we have is Mckenna. I really like her, and her and I talked a lot about various things and she has straight out asked me to work together. I said yes, because I do. The only issue with Mckenna is that I think she's playing a social, snake-like game, and i'm a little worried, but it's kind of too early to call. So in conclusion of the initial thoughts, I think I stand okay with everyone. I'm going to try to be more active and helpful so that i'm an attribute to keep around, because quite frankly I want to win. Now, for my strategy. Like every game i've ever played, my intent is to be a strategic goddess. However, I want to revamp that and focus on my social game. In Bahamas (shout out to Dana), my game was purely social, and I made it to final three, placing second and LOSING by one vote against Dana. Strategy was an aspect of my game, but not everything to me. This time, as it's a main season, i'm putting all my energy into this. I'm going to attempt to be manipulative, and run the merge phase and win. Obviously, I won't, i'm too cocky, but that's my hopes and dreams. I want to excel strategically and socially, and be okay competitively. One thing i'm excited for is that this game, I plan on being extremely cutthroat. Will that bite me in the ass? More than likely, but whom cares. I want to be fun, entertaining, and play hard, and if I lose because lack of respect... whatever. But keep in mind that may be subject to change as i'll probably develop secured relationships, and be really nice and loveable. False County Court Claim Against Me on My Car Insurance?

Someone has put a claim in against me for damages, for an accident I know nothing about. It is from early 2010 and has been going on since then. I have been contesting it on the grounds I have not been involved in an incident, however the third party solicitors have issued County Court proceedings against me. My insurance company are saying they are putting in a defence and have provided a barrister. I am really annoyed with this as I know I haven't been in an accident. I could understand if maybe they were claiming I clipped them and I had done it without realising but they are claiming for an accident which I have no knowledge of! I have attended the Magistrate's Court hearing and although I pleaded not guilty I have been found guilty on the grounds that for the time and date of the accident I have no alibi, witness or other evidence to support my whereabouts. 100 Days of Comics! 054/100: Runaways #27 (2007)

And today’s selection from the box of mystery is Runaways! Yay!

But the Joss Whedon run! Boo!

In fact, its part 3 of his dumb time travel story which means I don’t even get to see Molly Hayes punch the Punisher so hard in the nards that he spends the rest of the story bent over clutching himself. And without that, the entire story arc is just pointless.

I mean, to be fair. It’s not just Joss Whedon. Runaways got exponentially worse once their evil supervillain parents died. The original concept had trouble sustaining an ongoing narrative, despite how hard the book tried to recapture that early spark.

Hope the show is good though.

Anyway, at the beginning of Civil War, the Runaways were trapped in their secret lair under the la brea tar pits by Iron Man and others. The very next issue, they were making a deal with Kingpin in New York because if you’re on the run from superheroes, logically New York is where you go.

They agreed to steal for the Kingpin only to try to back out of the deal because the thing they agreed to steal was built by Chase Stein’s parents and then Molly Hayes punched Punisher so hard that he probably had to whiz red for a while, and then they stuck the thing into their jumpy frog vehicle and it transported them back in time one-hundred years.

Shapeshifter Skrull Xavin grabs a newspaper to figure out when they are (the newspaper has a headline about Typhoid Mary being apprehended, leading to a confused Chase to wonder what a Daredevil villain is doing one hundred years ago) and worries about changing history.

The Runaways decide that since they fried the thing that made them time travel, best thing to do would be to have Nico Minoru use her magics to transport them back to their own time.

Problem being that the Leapfrog is impervious to spell-casting, a safeguard Mr. Stein put on the frog-shaped mech in case the Minorus turned on him. There’s also a holo-record that freaks out Chase two-fold, because it projects Chase’s abusive dad right in his face and because dead girlfriend and second dead Runaway Gertie York was on the holo too.

Magic does come into play because they need Nico to summon up period clothes. Also they ditch the telepathic genetically altered raptor to watch the cloaked Leapfrog. Another problem with latter day Runaways. It never knew that more telepathic genetically altered raptor was better and was always sidelining Old Lace.

Anyway... oh what fresh hell. Most of a page has been ripped out of this book. Its not really a problem with the book. I am annoyed that the comic shop put this in my mystery box. I’d complain but its been several months and this issue is collected in the Runaways trade I already have.

On the ripped page, a building catches fire and the Runaways spring into action because keeping a low profile and not altering history is not more important than saving lives. Upon using a forcefield to protect people from the fire, Xavin realizes that the building is filled with children.

Karolina Dean spots a young girl fleeing the fire, having climbed down a bunch of flowering vines that have no place climbing a building in New York probably.

After saving everyone (and grateful that people do not have phone cameras in this era) they are accosted by a young man with a cane who looks suspiciously like Jimmy Olsen.

He calls the Runaways ‘Wonders’ like himself and offers them a safe place.

And then we cut back to the fire and some witchhunter type with a big cross on his clothes and an equally big gun is investigating. Its more dead children but he recognizes that someone new to the scene intervened and stopped the worst of it.

And then back to Not Olsen (Eddie Gunnam), explaining that he found his magic stick after the previous holder had been struck by lightning five times. And he introduces the Runaways to... CAMELOT! Which smells like poo.

And is like a back alley place for runaways to live or something.

Very quickly, Eddie introduces them to a bunch of supporting cast for this story line. Lillie McGurty, the Spieler, can dance on air if there’s a tune. A guy called Jacob who plays the fiddle. A small individual called Creeper. Superstrong Hoyden. Yellow Kid, a reference to the Yellow Kid. A zombie called Dead George Pelham. And a guy with mechanical wings called Tristan, who Victor meets in the future and tells him a secret.

Eddie gives them a room for the night and some grub. Karolina insists on exploring the past while she has the chance.

Xavin: “Have fun. And then stop having fun and come back.”

And then. Fucks sake, another torn out page. -goes over to Marvel Unlimited-

So on the missing page, Victor tells Nico about his encounter with future Tristan and she ribs him about being attracted to Lillie. And as Karolina walks around, she’s accosted by a skeevy gentleman who tries to recruit her for his brothel, probably?

So she blasts him across the street because she has alien rainbow powers.

But then a window box falls that has similar roses to the ones she noticed at the fire and she flies up to investigate.

The young girl she saw running from the fire is being yelled at by a much older man (later revealed to be her husband because gross). He yells at her for sitting around admiring roses instead of cutting them and selling them and threatens to hit her when she talks back. He also threatens to sell her. Because gross.

Meanwhile elsewhere, Eddie is talking to this big guy called the Maneater about the Runaways. They could be helpful to the Sinners in their possibly upcoming war against the Upward Path.

Also apparently Eddie’s stick makes people trust him, often against their own better judgement.

For bringing the Runaways to Maneater’s attention, Eddie wants a finders fee, a remembrance for any job they pull and maybe a good word put in with the Others. Maneater warns Eddie that the Others not knowing about him ensures his continued existence.

After Eddie leaves, Maneater goes to the front of the train to inform the Others about this new gang of Wonders.

The Others are revealed as... DUN DUN DUN! The Yorkes. The time travelling evil parents in the evil parent club the Pride that kicked off the whole book. This being them in an early part of their timeline. Cause time travel.

The Yorkes tell Maneater to recruit the Runaways or kill them. Can’t have a wild card at this stage of things.

DUN DUN DUN!

I don’t like this arc on Runaways. Although most of the reasons I don’t like it don’t show up here.This is just a set-up issue. Setting up a bunch of people who will become very important and then very dead in a couple issues. Setting up Klara Prast so she can join the team in a couple issues. Setting up conflicts and such.

I don’t like this issue, as in this very specific physical iteration of this story, because several pages were ripped out of it. Again, I’m too lazy to actually go and complain and the comic store is actually somewhat far away.

But this has been a very frustrating three days between this, Avengers Vs Infinity missing a page, and Bloodstrike’s constant two-page spreads. The second half of the box is off to a rocky start.

My entire dash is posting Tony discourse so here’s mine:

+ I didn’t like Cap in Avengers.  I didn’t like Cap in Captain America (whatever his first movie was).  I thought he was boring.  However, Cap is 100% all about getting shit done and he understands that means people dies and maybe he dies and maybe we all die but the man has already literally committed suicide to save people.  It’s not even a little bit shocking that he wouldn’t like Tony when they first met.  Tony rolls onto the scene brash and arrogant as he usually does.  These are things I like about Tony, he’s confrontational and he’s a trouble maker and YES he also is a genius and he has recently dedicated his life to trying to better the world and that’s are admirable but their core personalities still aren’t people that would get along without effort.  This doesn’t make either of them villains.

+ For that matter, they were supposed to have reached a point of mutual respect for their very different but equally important skill sets.  That was the point of the whole final battle (In The Avengers).

+ There’s no telling how many missions they did together as Avengers, or how much time they spent hanging out together.  We don’t get to see them getting along because the MCU doesn’t show us that.  We only get to see them when they’re at odds; maybe that’s because in the MCU Tony and Steve aren’t pals or maybe that’s because Age of Ultron was predominantly a clusterfuck.

+ Tony doesn’t like Steve (at first, over all) IN PART because his Father did like Steve.  If the MCU spent anymore time giving Tony unresolved father issues it would have to move its genre to Lifetime.  It’s entirely possible that Steve doesn’t like Tony because of Howard too.  Either he feels like Tony is too unlike his father or he feels Tony is very like his father and being around him reminds him of the fact that literally everyone and everything he knew is dead.  I mean take your pick

+ it was abundantly clear in Iron Man 3 that Tony needed Actually Medical Attention.  Whether or not Tony’s friends noticed/understood the symptoms and ignored them/encouraged him to get help remains up to the viewer to decide.  Since the story line of that movie wasn’t “Let’s get Tony to Counselling!!!!” it wasn’t relevant enough to put into the movie.  This doesn’t mean Pepper/Rhodey/Happy didn’t notice or try.  It just means it didn’t show up in the movie so you can argue whether anyone cared canonically or not.  (Except Bruce, who fell asleep while Tony told a story.)  But the end of that movie heavily leaned toward “Tony’s All Better Now!!”

+ I spent all of Iron Man 3 literally screaming about how stupid it was that none of the other avengers are there.  WHY WOULDN’T THEY BE THERE.  WHY WOULDN’T TONY CALL THEM.  WHY WOULDN’T THEY CARE.  Because the writers, that’s why.  Or because the contracts for the actors.  Or some other not-actually-related-to-the-characters/plot reason.

+ BUT THEN THEY DID AGE OF ULTRON, THE CLUSTERFUCK.  I’m speaking here from a purely story-teller’s POV when I say that the only reason that Tony thought up and bullied Bruce into helping him make this World-Killing Machine was the Writers had no No Better Ideas.  They were like: well we only have a few of these guys left and only one or two of them are smart enough to do a thing and we made Hank Pym old and irrelevant so fuck him I guess Tony who was Mostly Better in the last movie has to relapse into crazy-face shenanigans.  I don’t think Tony was wrong or bad to want to create something that helped the world, or that would have acted like a shield.  I think Tony shouldn’t have done it alone.  Or in secret.  Or without telling anyone.  Which is what he appears to do in Age of Ultron (the clusterfuck)

+ I tell my kid like 100 times a month: “If you’re hiding it from people, you know it’s wrong,” when she gets into stuff she shouldn’t and takes things that aren’t hers an tries to smuggle candy to school.

+  Tony is a dick.  I love him but he’ a dick.  Steve’s a dick too.  But we can’t all go around pretending that Tony isn’t a dick.  

+  Or that Tony has trust issues and literally has never shared his toys ever.  I could list examples of Tony hiding his creations and refusing to share them but I think we’ve all seen the movies.

+  None of this makes Tony a bad guy.  Tony just makes choices based on his own personality and his own experiences and his own fears.  Which is EXTREMELY HUMAN.  

+  Cap is not a glorious savior of mankind who is without fault and always right.  He is, however, the Hero Type.  He is portrayed as righteous (which gets annoying) and also Right (sometimes by accident).  My sole beef with people attacking Cap is that they always try to drag Bucky into it.  I’m bias because I love Cap/Bucky as friends, boyfriends, roommates, whatever I don’t care.  But even in MCU Canon, Steve is willing to risk his own life/give up everything to save Bucky.  They established that in Winter Soldier.  He was like: sure go ahead Bucky literally beat me to death that’s fine I’m here for you.  For Steve, Bucky is that cinnamon roll too pure for this world and he must be protected at literally all cost.

+  This brings us slowly around to the shitstorm that is Civil War.  Civil War’s entire plot is stupid.  I’m just going to say that outright.  They never actually established the Avengers as a fully-functioning tight-knit group of friends/co-workers/fellow-heroes.  You know that Sam and Natasha like Steve well enough to work with him/do dangerous and stupid things with him.  They trust him and respect him and you know that because you’ve seen it actually happen on screen.

+ Civil War starts out doing a huge disservice to Tony.  From a story-telling point of view, at NO TIME is Tony’s story line presented fairly.  While he is not the villain (there almost isn’t a villain in this, what’s his face with the sibera plan was too pathetic to count) he is CLEARLY the Antagonist(ic plot device).  They show him trying to cope with his life by spending way too much money on Virtual Reality Toys.  They make sure we know that he still hasn’t properly dealt with his parent’s death.  They set up that he’s exhausted, more or less.  His girlfriend (who was a major step for him considering what a massive fuck he was prior to Iron Man 2/3) has left him, he’s struggling with his PTSD (one could argue stems all the way back from when he was attacked/kidnapped/tortured/etc), he’s struggling with the loss of his parents (and if his parents, you could also so he’s struggling with Obadiah who we all forget because he’s a bitch but its heavily insinuated he was a Father figure prior to that time He attacked Tony and then Tony had to kill him).  Let’s just say it’s no surprise Tony is Struggling.  Civil War takes a man who just needs to get some sleep, a quiet place to think and possibly intense medical intervention and sets him up with the world’s stupidest idea ever.

+  I’m not knocking the Accords, but if i have to read one more post about how Steve Was Very Wrong for not signing them, I might start screaming.  I’m not here to talk about whether or not Steve was Wrong.  But it’s no surprise Steve didn’t sign.  Steve who lied on multiple enlistment forms.  Steve who defied direct orders from the military.  Steve who was a USO performer and an honorary Captain who did Very Fucking Dumb Shit that happened to Turn Out Ok because he was the Hero and for literally no other reason.  Steve who rolled up to Hydra-Shield with like 2.5 friends and thought he was going to save the day (AND HE DID, BECAUSE HE’S A HERO AND IT’S INSANE THAT IT WORKED).  There’s no surprise that Steve doesn’t want to sign a sheet of paper that says he has to follow orders given to him by someone higher up.  It’s just not his personality.  He trusts himself, he always has, in literally every situation he trusts himself and his own judgement over everything and everyone else.  That’s good/bad depending on how you want to look at it, but that’s all it is.

+  Incidentally, Tony usually thinks the same:

+  So lets assume that Tony agreed with the Accords on the basic principles they stand for.  That he was like: you’re right we need these, we need to have accountability.  Because while he’s a jackass and all he did go through that huge moment in the first movie where he discovered he was accidentally supplying terrorists and he flipped his shit.  Tony does NOT want his Legacy to be War and Death.  I respect this.

+  Civil War does not set up Tony to be viewed without bias.  They set him up to be an obstacle that Steve has to overcome.  The language they use is passive-aggressive and desperate.  I’m not saying that Tony is, but (In my case) it’s not even about Tony wanting the Accords for the Good of the World.  He wants the Accords to protect his friends.  And he’s willing to bully/beg to get them.  So everyone signs, Tony gets his Accountability because the Avengers are World-Wide Property now, and he also gets to keep his friends.  For me, personally, the Accords are a steaming pile of shit.  And at no point did I even understand why Tony wanted them.  Or why Natasha signed them.  Rhodey?  Yes.  Rhodey is a Military Man.  Rhodey makes complete sense.

+  a few other disservices that Civil War does to Tony: They have him “imprison” Wanda “for her own safety” but then have Steve & Friends break her out (and then Steve frees all the other Avengers from jail).  They have him COMPLETELY IGNORE evidence that some shit is not right and instead have him focused on begging Steve to join the Accords.  This is my biggest beef.  If Steve/Tony were ever friends, then Steve should have gone to Tony and said: “look this doesn’t seem right to me.”  At which point Tony the Literal Genius and Dude who Created a Flying Suit to Right the Wrongs should have said, “yes it does seem fishy”  Even if Steve didn’t sign the Accords there’s 0 reasons that Tony couldn’t have still seen that something was up and put into motion a plan to do something about it.  There should be no reason (assuming Steve/Tony have actual respect for one another and have worked together before) that Steve shouldn’t have trusted Tony to do that.  

+ I’m not talking about Steve going after Bucky before anyone else could.  There’s no universe were Steve wouldn’t have gone after Bucky once he knew where he was and that he was in danger.  I mean all the shit after that.

+ Tony gets his BFF paralyzed, he enlists an ACTUAL CHILD, and puts half the Avengers in jail.  (I mean not him himself actually but that’s how the movie is set up.)  And then after all that, and after a whole movie of him ranting about this is the only way, Tony goes to Siberia.  Tony does the EXACT THING that all the others were trying to do DESPITE HOW THEY WERE JUST PUT IN JAIL in DIRECT CONFLICT of the ACCORDS.  I don’t care if you’re in love with Tony Stark or not, that shit is ridiculous.  I mean, that is the Single Reason that I walked out of this movie furious at Tony Stark.  It completely eclipsed every shred of sympathy I had for the man.  It made everything that happened before completely meaningless.  

+  But that’s what the story demands.  This whole movie (like Avengers, like Age of Ultron) seems to only care about pitting the heroes against one another.  Like, AT ALL COSTS.  If Loki had met up with What-his-Fuck (siberia guy) before Avengers, that little horned asshole would be running the planet because Civil War is x50 as masterful at manipulating Tony vs Steve as any other movie.  

+  I’m just going to say this: Siberia’s guy plan is bullshit.  That video being queued up for Tony to see is ridiculous.  Steve having never told Tony about his parents was shitty

+ (but a side note here, how many of you would be lining up at your friend’s house to tell them the practically useless news that your semi-frozen brainwashed best friend forever had actually murdered Friend 1′s parents while under the influence of Hydra when you have 0 reason to think that this information will EVER BE RELEVANT.)

+  Steve “Values the Truth, but also disobeys orders and keeps secrets, and chooses his one BFF over all his new friends” Rogers didn’t tell Tony “I’m so emotionally vulnerable and lonely, confused and yet nobody seems to notice” Stark about how his parents really died.  It was set up in the movie to be a Huge Deal and it was meant to Punch You in the Guts.  You can feel about that however you want to feel but at the end of the day, for me, shitty choice with shitty consequences or not, it was definitely a believable choice.

+ The big fight at the end of the movie was fantastic.  It was all kinds of pretty colors.  But as aforementioned in basically every Cap movie ever, Steve is never going to chose someone over Bucky.  Not the world, not Tony, not Himself.  Bucky > all other things.

+  The final, most lasting insult to Tony in Civil War is that it makes Cap the hero.  Cap saves the Avengers, Cap saves his friend, Cap sends that letter.  You can say what you want about the letter, about whether it was a real apology or not.  I thought it was.  Some don’t.  

+  Tony’s story line deserved better.  Tony deserved better.  This movie set him up to be seen as a selfish, thoughtless, desperation-driven asshole while it made all those same qualities seem heroic on Cap.
